Fairview Public Library is reopening this morning.

Two-and-a-half months after a Feb. 5 flood caused by a broken watermain closed the building, the doors will open Thursday, April 17 at 9 a.m.

The re-opening is eagerly anticipated in the community, especially since the flood came less than a month after the library re-opened Jan. 10 following a 15-month renovation project.

Most of the library, one of Toronto Public Library’s most popular branches, will open but part of the first floor will remain closed for restoration.

In June, the rest of the first floor and the program rooms on the first and fourth floors will reopen and programs including Leading to Reading, adult literacy and English-as-a-secondlanguage classes will resume, according to TPL’s website.

Meanwhile, meeting and theatre rentals remain on hold until more information about access to the rest of the building becomes available, the website added.

Ryan Hawken and Rebel Coast voted SuperGroup on YTV show North York teen in boy group that won music competition

The best way to help a person with dementia is to focus on what they can do as opposed to what they can’t, says the keynote speaker of The Caregiver Show, a free day tailored to family caregivers.

“We need to acknowledge that they aren’t who they used to be, exactly, but also that they still have skills and they still have abilities,” said Teepa Snow, a well-respected author and speaker, who will headline the May 14 event at Heritage Court, in the Direct Energy Centre, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

ess than 24 hours after his group was crowned the winner of YTV’s The Next Star: SuperGroup, Ryan Hawken has barely had a chance to catch his breath.

The North York resident and Earl Haig Secondary School student, along with Amer Dhahliwal, Curtis Smith, Kyle McVea and Angelo Moretti, got the news their band, Rebel Coast, had beat group Electric Ave. during the live finale Sunday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The winning group was determined by viewers’ votes.

“I was pretty prepared either way for both outcomes,” Hawken said in a phone interview Monday, the day after the big win.

“We got close with (Electric Ave.) and it’s sad to see them go, but there can only be one winner.”

The two groups kicked off the finale by performing together and then each performed cover songs as well as their original singles, including We Are The Brave

by Rebel Coast and Into Pieces by Electric Ave. After being announced the winner on stage by series host Jordan Francis, Rebel Coast performed its brand new single Don’t Stop Now to close the show.

The finale capped off the six-part elimination series that followed the journey of several boy and girl groups over an intense multi-week training process, led by music industry experts.

Hawken, 16, was one of an initial pool of 30 finalists to compete on SuperGroup, with 10 singers cut. The remaining 20 formed four groups of five – two boy groups, two girl groups.

Hawken made the Top 6 on YTV’s The Next Star in 2012, and was asked to come back to compete on spin-off series The Next Star: SuperGroup, which premiered March 11. The Next Star focused on solo acts, whereas The Next Star: SuperGroup was made up of groups.

Though Rebel Coast’s sound will be pop based, Hawken said the group members are also fans of rock, acoustic and folk.

Along with his newly formed group, Hawken is also part of several bands, the most noteworthy one called Boardwalk, which brings their rock/pop sound to various venues across the

city, he said.

By pure coincidence, there was one familiar face when The Next Star: SuperGroup finalists gathered – fellow Earl Haig student Smith, who happens to be in Rebel Coast along with Hawken. “(Smith) played bass for me when my band played the El Mocambo,” Hawken prevously told The Mirror.

“I didn’t know him that well and we would hang out once in a while. Now we are close.”

And though the group’s fame is new, Hawken is already getting a taste of the rock ’n’ roll life.

“Some fans followed us to our hotel (Sunday) night.”

Rebel Coast will perform live during The Next Star auditions in Montreal April 29 and in Toronto May 17 and 18.

Broken elbow prompts hospital art fundraiser North York artist Wilf McOstrich is holding a “bone-us” fundraiser for North York General Hospital.

The Banbury Art Group meets on Wednesdays at the Banbury Community Centre southwest of York Mills Road and Leslie Street to paint and learn the techniques of different artists.

McOstrich is now holding an additional class at the centre on Tuesday, April 22 from noon to 3 p.m., with all proceeds going to the hospital’s orthopedic department.

“We normally have paintalongs on Wednesdays but I have inserted this extra day as a fundraiser and to pay back (the hospital) for doing a great job on fixing my broken elbow,” he said in an email.

What transit vision will resonate with provincial voters?

ow to pay for transit expansion – it’s the multi-billion-dollar question.

Speaking at the Toronto Region Board of Trade Monday, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne pledged that a greater portion of the gas tax (one that’s already collected by the province) would go toward specific transit projects.

Combined with other funds, that reallocation commitment amounts to $29 billion over 10 years. There aren’t many further details, beyond that a little more than half that money would go to projects in the Greater Toronto Area.

Response to Wynne’s pledge from the likes of Metrolinx chair Robert Prichard and representatives from CivicAction Alliance was optimistic but cautious – and for good reason.

Specific details haven’t been announced, for one.

We also know that all the Big Move projects in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area need $2 billion annually over 25 years. our view Monday’s funding commitment amounts to less than a Pledge greeted third of that target. Among the in Toronto waiting for with optimism projects those funds is a relief subway line to take the strain off an and caution overburdened Yonge line.

Finally, Wynne’s minority government is on shaky ground and is hardly in prime position to act on this pledge. Her governing Liberals will need support from either the Progressive Conservatives or the NDP to survive an upcoming budget vote at Queen’s Park and avoid being plunged into a June election.

Simply put, she has the best platform right now to make those kind of big pledges. Somewhere along the line – maybe soon, maybe later – the voter will decide.

So the premier has sent a message clear in financial support if nothing else. The big number will resonate.

The Tories’ focus on building subways may resonate with voters. The NDP hasn’t set out exactly what they’d do for transit and how they’d pay for it.

And it’s the NDP that matters most here.

Presuming there’s a provincial budget soon, it’ll come down to whether the NDP supports that budget that determines how much cautiously optimistic transit planners can count on the Liberal-promised provincial funds.

Turning down the budget sends us to an election and all bets are off.

A solution for long lineups at the tax office So I dropped into one of the locations of well-known preparer Read My Lips, Yes Taxes on Sunday afternoon and grabbed my spot at the back of the usual endless mid-April line.

I was resigned for a long wait when I noticed the gentleman standing in front of me was David Copperfield, maybe the world’s best illusionist. I couldn’t believe my good fortune. I love that guy.

“Oh man, David Copperfield,” I bubbled like a star-struck teenager, “I’m a huge fan of yours.”

“I’m not David Copperfield,” he growled.

“Actually, I’m a little fan,” I giggled, not listening. “As you can see, you’re a good foot taller than me.”

“Mack, take the wax out of your ears, I told you I’m not David Copperfield,” he said, telling me again he was not David Copperfield.

I didn’t hear it that time, either. I was way too excited. “Just out of curiosity, Dave, why are you wast-

“Look at me, noodlebrain,” he barked. “You see a top hat anywhere?”

“Uh, now that you mention it, no. But not to worry, I have a Jays baseball cap

in my gym bag if you don’t mind improvising.”

“For the last time, I’m not David Copperfield.

And he’s an American, not a Canadian. No way he’d be in this line. Now if you don’t leave me alone I’m gonna have to call a security guard.”

“Call a security guard?

What for, when you can just take out your magic wand, say ‘Abracadabra’ or whatever it is you say to make a guard materialize right here on the spot?”

“That’s it. You’re a nut job. I’m outta here,” he barked as he stormed out.

“I’ll look for your next special,” I shouted as he exited the door. “Unless it’s on Showtime. I don’t have the super duper ultra deluxe optimum cable package.”

“Sheesh, show biz people,” I mumbled under my breath after he left.

They claw and scrape to get fame and fortune and then once they make it to the top, they have no time

for the little people who helped make them what they are. I don’t even know why I bother saying Hi to any of them, anymore.

Well, with the excitement over I resumed my depressed state stuck at the back of the pack when I had to do a double take.

Standing just in front of me now was one of my favorite actors. Two celebs in a row?

Wow. What are the odds?

“Excuse me,” I gushed leaning over to him, “Aren’t you Russell Crowe? I absolutely loved you in Noah, man. You were awesome. I smell another Oscar. Allow me to introduce myself. I’m a big fan of yours. Actually, I’m a little fan...”

OK, OK. I know it ain’t pretty. But if you have any better ideas how to make an April tax lineup move any faster I’m all ears.

the city stepped up, making what sounds like a dubious promise from the get-go: $15 billion flowing to transit and transportation improvements in the Greater Toronto Area (from $29 billion, province-wide), from... somewhere. Gas tax revenue will have something to do with it, as will a portion of the HST derived from fuel tax. And there will be added debt.

Further details of how this money is to be raised will be revealed in the sureto-be-defeated 2014 provincial budget in a few weeks.

The money, if it ever comes, would sure be nice.

More than nice, in fact: funding on that scale is essential, if Toronto and the region is to remain livable and economically viable.

It might even be worth a bigger deficit to see it go ahead.

There is a more immediate and less costly plan at work with the April 14 announcement: embarrassing the

provincial Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats, as they get set to presumably defeat the government and force a spring election.

Wynne made that clear at the announcement, when she pointed out the plan will require allies – and if those allies aren’t in the Legislature, they could well be voters.

If Wynne can successfully portray a vote against the government as a vote against transit funding, she’ll have a shot at the ear of every commuter struggling for breath and dignity on the Yonge-University subway line.

It won’t hurt her that the mayor’s race in Toronto is also shaping itself into a marathon meditation on public transit.

Unfortunately for Wynne and for Toronto, the Ontario Liberals are entering this race with many other welldocumented disadvantages.

If transit expansion is truly to be tied to a Liberal victory in 2014... well, that would be yet another heart-break.

n the politics of commuting in Toronto, there is nothing as heartbreaking as a transit plan near the eve of an election.

The promise is as sweet as the prospects are bleak. But the stakes are high enough that you cannot look away.

Rob Ford played with the hearts of Scarborough residents when he promised to stop the Sheppard LRT and turn it into a subway just a few years ago.

1969 RCAF Station Downsview is renamed Canadian Forces Base Toronto (Downsview).

1929 de Havilland Aircraft builds an assembly plant, hangar and runway at Downsview Park.

April 24, 1997 The federal government announces development plans for the former base including 1,200 residential units as well as recreational and commercial uses within the park’s 130 hectares (320 acres). The Downsview secondary plan progresses over the next several years.

1994 Then-prime minister Jean Chrétien raises the possibility of closing the base and floats the idea of creating a huge urban park in northern Toronto.

April 1, 1996 CFB Downsview officially closes.

• 1947 Royal Canadian Airforce Station Downsview is established, later expropriated from the air force in 1952 by the Department of National Defence.

1994 Ottawa announces it will close the base. The site will be “held in perpetuity and in trust primarily as a unique urban recreational green space for the enjoyment of future generations.” At some point, Ottawa says the park has to be selffinancing, which means it has to accommodate development.

But the scale of development would only become clear over time.

Residents will have a chance to learn more about plans for Downsview Park and to provide their opinions at a community consultation meeting this month.

Canada Lands Company is holding the meeting to discuss issues such as the development and planning principles for the park, the application of the municipal planning approval process on the lands, and an update on activities taking place on the site.

January 2006 Following a federal election, the community discovers the park plan was altered so areas originally designated as green space will be developed with smaller parks than originally planned.

April 21, 2011 North York Community Council approves development plans for the park after deferring the issue several times over the previous year. Toronto Council later endorses the plan.

June 29, 2011 The Ontario Municipal Board approves an overall development plan for Downsview, including Downsview Park, that includes 20,000 residents in 9,800 residential units and 22,000 workers, with details still to be worked out. Albert Krivickas, vice-president of the Downsview Lands Community Voice Association, calls the decision a sad day for the community.

Cycling improvement projects in Toronto and across the province will receive a boost of $25 million over three years, it was announced this week.

The announcement, made by provincial Transportation Minister Glen Murray to kick off the 2014 Ontario Bike Summit, will see $10 million invested in municipal bike infrastructure projects like separated lanes. A further $15 million will go towards constructing paved shoulders for cycling on provincial highways and bridges.

A public meeting will discuss transit improvements in the Jane-Finch area.

TTC chair Maria Augimeri and Metrolinx community relations director Jamie Robinson will take part in a panel organized by the Community Action Planning Group of York West to discuss transit plans for the area, such as the $1.2 billion Finch West LRT scheduled to commence construction in 2015.

A presentation is also planned on current transit service in the neighbourhood, which is served by some of the city’s most crowded bus routes.

Province to dedicate more gas tax money to transit RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The Ontario government has pledged $15 billion to Greater Toronto transportation improvements over the next 10 years.

The announcement Monday by Premier Kathleen Wynne promises $29 billion in overall funding province-wide, with the bulk of the money coming from redirected HST revenues collected from provincial gas taxes as well as the introduction of a new set of revenue tools, the details of which will not be known until the release of the provincial budget in a few weeks’ time.

Wynne also promised full accountability and transparency when it comes to allocating the money.

But given the precarious status of the minority Liberals, she admitted for the plan to ever become reality it will require support from either the provincial PCs or NDPs, or a clear victory at the polls should an election be called

ing annually to pay for its Big Move expansion plan, Metrolinx chair Rob Prichard said Wynne’s announcement represented a positive first step for future funding either from the province or the federal government.

“This is a floor, not a ceiling of the funds available, and they can easily be supplemented by significant federal investment,” said Prichard.

Thousands of Toronto students dance for autism awareness CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com About 11,000 students across the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) danced simultaneously the morning of April 2 to mark World Autism Awareness Day. Nearly 200 from Senator O’Connor College School participated in the large-scale event led by special education and multiple exceptionalities/ developmental delay (ME/DD) teacher Alexandra Gavalas.

“We all worked on it together,” said Gavalas, adding she posted an instructional dance video on YouTube with each class practising since March break. “ME/DD students were ecstatic with the idea.”

While they didn’t break the Guinness World Record, the event was successful in getting the word out to fellow students and teachers about autism and in helping promote under-

standing and inclusiveness.

Senator O’Connor students wore blue shirts, collected loose change totalling almost $600 for special education programs, and announced daily facts about autism leading up to World Autism Awareness Day. “The more people know, the more they’re aware. And the more they’re aware, the more they can do,” Gavalas said.

Autism Canada Foundation defined autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a complex neurobiological condition that can affect the normal function of the gastrointestinal, immune, hepatic, endocrine and nervous systems. It impacts normal brain development leaving most individuals with communication problems, difficulty with typical social interactions and a tendency to repeat specific patterns of behaviour.

“It comes with education,” Menary said. “We do a lot of workshops, education and training and we want to do it in a positive way.”

Jasper Cho, who is an ME/ DD student at the school, appreciated how his peers came together to raise autism awareness.

“I liked it a lot,” said Cho, adding the dance moves weren’t that difficult to learn.

because such islands are now recommended only on roads up to five lanes wide.

Victoria Park Avenue has seven lanes at the intersection, including turning lanes and bus bays.

The city’s transportation staff, “due to public requests,” studied adding traffic signals as a possible replacement, but found signals did not meet city warrants there and “could cause gridlock due to existing vehicle queues” in southbound traffic if they were installed.

A report said the pedestrian island was closed in February, and the TTC has agreed to remove bus stops on either side of the road, which generated most of the pedestrian traffic there.

There have been four recorded collisions involving pedestrians at the crossing with the island in five years, one with serious injuries.

The plans, which would see homes at 2374 and 2378 demolished, must still be approved by city council. That is expected to happen May 6.

A suspect has been charged with first-degree murder and two others are being sought in the shooting death of a man near Yonge Street and Deloraine Avenue Feb. 4.

Police were called to the area around 9:20 p.m. and found an injured man.

Thanh Tung Phan, 27, of Toronto, was arrested last Thursday and charged with first-degree murder and two counts of criminal harassment.

Police are looking for two additional male suspects, who were dressed in dark clothing.

They were last seen leaving the area on foot, traveling west on Melrose Avenue from Yonge.

The TDSB has hosted its annual Panfest celebration, with students playing steel pan drums, every year since 1989.

While the initiative started out small, it has grown to the point where about 700 students from 33 schools now take part in steel pan instruction and performance.

“For some of the schools, it’s a credit course,” said Panfest co-ordinator and TDSB instructional leader of music Alkiviadia Leontarakis. “It’s a great form of musical learning and it gives kids a different opportunity to begin their musicianship.”

group of eight students suing the school for $20.5 million over the incident, citing what they claim was a failure by the university to ensure on-campus safety.

Annie Malik, 19, was shot in the leg when a gunman opened fire inside the Steeles Avenue and Keele Street campus food court of the Student Centre March 6 around 10:45 p.m. Namra Malik (no relation), 20, suffered shrapnel injuries.

NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study for Highway 401/404 Interchange and Highway 401 and Neilson Road Interchange Bridge Rehabilitation in the City of Toronto G.W.P. 2029-13-00 THE PROJECT AECOM Canada Limited (AECOM) has been retained by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to undertake the Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study for the rehabilitation of eight (8) bridges at the Highway 401/404 Interchange and four (4) bridges at the Highway 401 and Neilson Road Interchange, which includes the two (2) bridges that carry Neilson Road over Milner Avenue in the City of Toronto. The two (2) interchange locations for this project are shown in the adjacent key plans.

The scope of the project will include: • Replacement of the deck and portions of the piers of the first of the three (3) bridges that carry traffic from Highway 401 westbound to the Don Valley Parkway southbound; • Deck repair and rehabilitation of other structural components of the other bridges at both interchange locations; • Repaving of the bridge decks and their approaches; • Traffic signals upgrade and potential geometric improvements at the Highway 401/Neilson Road Interchange; and • Construction staging/traffic management during construction to reduce traffic impacts and to ensure safety of the travelling public.

The proposed bridge rehabilitation will extend the service life of the bridges. Construction is anticipated to occur during the 2015 to 2017 construction seasons. However, short-term closures may be required in 2014 to assess bridge conditions.

THE PROCESS The project will follow the approved environmental planning process for Group ‘C’ projects under the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000) with the opportunity for the public to provide input. Mitigation measures will be incorporated into the construction contract to address potential environmental impacts.

The women are suing for $18 million and $1 million, respectively, and the cost of legal fees for physical and emotional distress caused by the incident, it was announced last Thursday, at a press conference downtown.

Six other students are each suing for $250,000, plus legal fees, for emotional pain and suffering.

All eight plaintiffs, who are being represented by Diamond & Diamond Personal Injury Lawyers, are York University students.

“I wasn’t walking alone through a dark passageway at York, I was sitting at the heart of York University, the Student Centre, with my friends,” Annie Malik said in a release.

“Even after the firefighters and the police came to handle the situation, there was no sign of York security personnel anywhere. I am afraid to go to the campus, now I have no trust or confidence at York when it comes to the security of my health and my life.”

The suit, which was filed April 9 in Ontario Superior Court, claims Annie Malik and Namra Malik suffered severe and permanent injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, paranoia, insomnia, nervousness, depression and irritability, and will continue to experience pain and suffering in the future and loss of enjoyment of life. The six other students claim to have suffered the same psychological problems.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

“We empathize greatly with the survivors who are suffering as a result of this terrible and random criminal activity on our campus,” Joanne Rider, York University’s chief spokesperson and director of media relations, said in a statement.

“Fortunately Toronto Police Service, with assistance from York, was able to quickly make arrests in this case. York University’s first priority is to provide a safe environment where people can study, live and work. The university has a multi-year safety and security plan – this has resulted in many enhancements over the last several years, with ongoing enhancements planned.”

Safety initiatives undertaken by the university include: • Enhanced security service patrols of key public areas in and around the central core of the Keele campus for the remainder of the academic year.

• Seventy-six security officials, with an additional two being added each year in the next two to three years.

• The installation of more than 600 CCTV cameras across the Keele campus.

• Installation of an emergency PA system in several buildings, with work in Vari Hall, the Student Centre and York Lanes underway.

• An expanded campaign to encourage students and staff to download the YorkU mobile safety app for emergency communications.

Two years ago, Isabella received a playhouse from Million Dollar Smiles, a non-profit organization that assists families going through tough times, particularly children affected by cancer.

A backyard playground was originally set to be built, but the location of a magnolia tree prevented that from happening. So in a Million Dollar Smiles first, a playhouse was constructed in the backyard of the Leone’s Black Creek and Trethewey drives home.

Looking at Isabella Leone, one would never guess the five-year-old spent two years battling leukemia.

The healthy, happy little girl with long brown hair, who has been in remission for a year, was on hand when her senior kindergarten class sat through a recent presentation by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) at Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

The presentations, broken up throughout the morning to accommodate the Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue school’s 440 students, explained what leukemia is and also served as the kick-off to the school’s Loonies for Lent fundraiser in support of the LLSC. Each student was encouraged to donate $1 towards the fundraiser.

Isabelle was diagnosed in late April 2010 with leukemia, which began a two-and-a-half year battle with chemotherapy and medica-

Tomasi, who also taught Isabella when she was going through treatment, said children in Isabella’s class were taught about good personal and classroom hygiene, and notes were sent to parents advising them to keep kids home if they were sick.

Carmela Ferri, principal of Immaculate Conception Catholic School, said the school is big on fundraising for charity, and this year chose the LLSC in honour of Isabella and another student who battled cancer last year.

School board trustee’s motion on nudity rules at Pride struck down CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Several protesters attended the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) regular board meeting April 9, and jeered at one trustee’s motion for the City of Toronto to clarify whether public nudity laws at the upcoming WorldPride 2014 event in late June will be enforced.

Scarborough-Agincourt trustee Sam Sotiropoulos put forward the motion, raising questions of age-appropriateness for students and families with the TDSB promoting the Toronto Pride parade.

“This is not something antihomosexual or anti-gay,” said Sotiropoulos, noting in his motion there are individuals who go about naked in public at the parade, which is con-

trary to Canadian law.

“The matter here is, are the laws being respected or not? Tacit support for nudity at Pride is not what I’m about.”

The debate was short-lived as Don Valley West trustee Gerri Gershon called the question with the majority of TDSB trustees quickly defeating the motion, voting against it 16 to 6.

“This board is out of touch with the people of this city,” he said, noting all trustees will be hearing from their constituents before the October municipal elections.

But supporters like Chris Moise, who is also running as a school trustee for BeachesEast York, said he attended the meeting to represent and support the Pride community.

Davenport trustee Maria Rodrigues also put forward a motion at the meeting for the TDSB to “reaffirm its commitment to supporting Pride Toronto by encouraging staff and students to continue to celebrate the history, courage and diversity of Toronto’s LGBTTIQQ2SA communities.”

The motion passed.

“I’m quite happy with the decision,” said Sean Hillier, co-chair of Pride Toronto, who attended the board meeting.
