Man dies after stabbing Police have identified a man who died from stab wounds after an apparent home invasion on Bogert Avenue Thursday.

Police have also released a security camera image on Monday of two suspects wanted in the investigation.

Police were called to the Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue area around 9:20 p.m. and found a 28-year-old man with stab wounds. He was taken to hospital and later died.

Police said two men entered the apartment, which had four occupants at the time. One of the men, armed with a gun, demanded cash and drugs from one of the occupants.

community hit by truck dies in hospital wPedestrian A 68-year-old woman has died after being struck by a truck while crossing Avenue Road near Fairlawn Avenue April 16.

Police said the senior was crossing mid-block when a northbound GMC 3500 driven by a 39-year-old man hit her.

The woman was taken to Sunnybrook hospital where she died Thursday, April 25.

E

very Tuesday morning these days, you’ll find Krystal MacLeod and Mark Hadida posted just inside the front doors of North York’s Cummer Lodge drumming up “business.”

For the second year, the friends are leading a team in the Toronto Challenge, a five-kilometre event to raise money for the city’s longterm care homes and for organizations that provide community programs for seniors.

Once again, MacLeod and Hadida will participate in the Toronto Challenge, being held this year on June 9, in their motorized wheelchairs. Other members of the team will walk.

Last year, the team raised $6,629.

“We did really good last year,” MacLeod said.

“We want to do better than last year,” Hadida said.

Every Tuesday morning, the friends ask residents and visitors at Cummer Lodge for pledges.

With the help of Liz McMulkin, co-ordinator

of volunteer services at Cummer Lodge and a representative for the Toronto Challenge, the friends are also raising money through pizza lunches and bake

sales and they are helping organizers prepare for a rummage sale at Cummer Lodge on May 11.

MacLeod said her team is getting excited about taking part in the Toronto Challenge.

The 25-year-old has been a volunteer at Cummer Lodge for the past six years, visiting one-on-one with residents.

She likes how interesting the seniors are and how willing they are to open up during their chats with her.

Born with cerebral palsy, MacLeod said she has always focused on being positive.

“I have CP, which is a condition that affects my brain. But my brain is smart,” she said.

“It’s hard at times but I tend to have a positive attitude. That is my nature.”

Hadida, 65, was born and raised in Morocco and later moved to Toronto, where he held jobs as a busboy, a delivery man and a messenger for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

One day, he suffered his first epileptic seizure while crossing the road and was struck by a vehicle.

police briefs U. coach faces child luring charges wYork A former York University football coach who was charged in February with child luring is now facing additional charges.

Police arrested Daniel Younis, 24, Monday and charged him with an additional eight offences.

Police allege between January 2011 and February 2013, the accused engaged three boys, aged 16 to 17,

through cellphone and Internet chats.

Police allege two victims sent images of themselves to the accused through cellphones and two of the victims were sexually assaulted by the accused.

Police allege two of the victims were sexually assaulted on the York University campus and the accused met the third victim at an all-star football game in Texas.

At the time of his first arrest,

Younis was the recruiting coordinator and running back coach for the York University Lions football team.

York University subsequently announced it had suspended its relationship with Younis pending the outcome of the police investigation.

The additional charges include three counts of luring a child under 18, two counts of attempt make child pornography, and three counts

of sexual exploitation.

Police believe there may be more victims.

In 2008, art historian Richard Meyer curated Warhol’s Jews: Ten Portraits Reconsidered for the Jewish Museum of New York. The exhibition will be

Debate deferral a disservice T he mega-problem of transit is a jigsaw with so very many pieces.

But you can’t throw the blue sky in a box and walk away.

Toronto has to solve the transit dilemma, and it needs as many people as possible trying pieces to see if it fits.

Mayor Rob Ford and the majority of his executive committee are not interested in debating transit funding – something so key to the city’s economic and social future.

Potential transit funding tools have been gathered in a report from city manager Joe Pennachetti.

Ford and his executive have determined by a 6-4 vote that they won’t have them debated among the full city council at least until after Metrolinx unveils its funding strategy at the end of May. But it is the last on this growing list, that should irk the most – it is an affront to democracy. And now, with executive member Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford changing his mind and saying he’d like funding tools debated, the executive is actually split on the issue.

But the vote was cast, and in Ford’s favour.

Waiting until Metrolinx – a provincial body – makes its recommendations shifts the city’s position from one of power to one of weakness. It is incredibly important to debate this at the city level, especially if Torontonians are asked to pay more taxes. We cannot wait for someone else to decide for us.

It is most probable, if council accepted certain funding tools, that Metrolinx would back those decisions by the people of Toronto for the people of Toronto. We think, with transit funding from new sources inevitable, it’s better to be part of the solution than to have something imposed.

In the end, the decision may not be entirely ours to make, but to not have a voice at the table while decisions are being made is truly shortsighted.

We ask that mayor Ford open the transit tools debate to city council during its May 6 and 7 meeting.

Suburbs not necessarily OK with a downtown casino To the editor: Re: ‘Limiting casino debate a bad move,’ Editorial, Our View, April 16.

I live in Etobicoke, but that doesn’t mean I am OK with a casino downtown.

You assume some of us are uncaring about people spending money they can’t afford, will run heavily into debt or that some have gambling problems.

I can’t speak for others, but I am concerned about a casino going anywhere, especially where it would make it easy for people to get to.

Do not assume those who live in the suburbs would be OK with a casino downtown.

HERE IS WHERE for Workman Arts Contact exhibition North York artist among those featured in upcoming exhibit ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com It took many months for North York’s Michael Mills to lift the lens of his camera up to meet the world. What he found and captured is now a part of an upcoming exhibition inspired by mental health.

In 2010, Mills went into a major bipolar disorder episode and was housebound for a year.

“My family, in order to encourage me to go out, purchased an entry-level digital camera,” said Mills, a Don Mills Road and Hwy. 401 resident. “I would go out every day and take 100 photos, 99 I would throw away, but every once in a while there was one nice photo.”

For the first seven months

of his photo trekking, the 49-year-old would only take photos of the sidewalk, afraid if he lifted his head he would make eye contact with others on the street.

Eventually he moved the camera up to see the world in front of him.

Mills said photography played a vital role in his recovery and is crucial to keeping him healthy. The result is work that will be on display at the 2013 Contact Photography Festival as part of Workman Arts’ HERE IS WHERE exhibition.

Workman Arts helps artists with mental illness and addiction issues develop and refine their work through its training programs, public performance and exhibit opportunities as well as partnering with other arts organizations.

The theme for Contact 2013 is “Field of Vision”, photography as an extension of sight, providing different ways of seeing, which Mitchell said these artists, all members of Workman Arts, have met and

far exceeded in their look at The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

With his work, Mills explores the visceral response to being admitted to the hospital and the feelings of confinement, entrapment, longing and hope.

The HERE IS WHERE exhibition is four artists’ response to

receiving treatment at CAMH and their experiences.

The participating artists – Heather Fulton, Catherine Jones, Annette Seip and Mills – created visual experiences that uncover beauty, fear, secrets and hope within the landscape at 1001 Queen St. W., according to HERE IS WHERE Curator Chris

Mitchell, the visual arts manager at Workman Arts.

The artists were able to take inspiration from the 150-year history of CAMH, archives, the redevelopment currently underway at the site and their personal experience.

Jones, who lives near Bloor and Lansdowne, gathered landscape elements and brought them into the studio to create her pieces, which explore the idea of our inner emotional landscape.

Seip, from Mississauga, created 3D skulls using imaging software. The skulls incorporate portraits and historical and contemporary images from the site. “( What) I am trying to depict is a change, not only in the physical architecture but a shift in values and perception towards mental health and addiction,” Seip said. “This is why I modeled the photography on heads.”

Midtown’s Fulton is a recent OCAD graduate whose whole art practice is about exploring memory and physical

place. Her images put forth the notion that stories exist within a landscape or built structure.

“She was a perfect fit for this project,” Mitchell said.

Contact Photography Festival runs from May 1 to 25 and HERE IS WHERE can be seen at a pop-up gallery Workman Art has created in the former development information trailer on the grounds of CAMH, just off Queen Street West at Gordon Bell Road.

“I’ve had my eye on it for a while, thinking it would be a perfect pop-up gallery,” Mitchell said. “And they aren’t using it now so we were really lucky to secure it.”

The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, May 1 from 5 to 8 p.m.

As part of the North York Mirror’s Exclusive Look series, we are focusing on the organizations that make up the Bathurst-Finch Community Hub and the services they offer to the community.

The Mirror sat down with Shelley Zuckerman, executive director of North York Community House.

Tell us about your organization and what it does.

North York Community House (NYCH) is a charitable neighbourhood centre located in northwest Toronto. For over 22 years now, NYCH has been dedicated to supporting families, new Canadians and building strong neighbourhoods. We provide services in over 80 locations (including schools and community centres) in more than 30 languages. In 2012, NYCH provided services to over 25,000 people.

w NEWCOMER SETTLEMENT

NYCH helps newcomers to Canada to make their settlement as smooth and successful as possible. NYCH supports newcomers with their settlement in many ways – to learn and practice English, navigate complex systems such as health care – all important steps to feel at home in a new country. Through offering a variety of support groups, NYCH helps isolated newcomer women and seniors to decrease their isolation and learn about Canada.

NYCH’s settlement program in schools helps newcomer students and their families settle in their school and community.

w skills and development

Our range of training and leadership development and mentorship programs connect people with a wide network of community support, information and training and development. NYCH also links new Canadians and long-time residents. Newcomers develop new connections, knowledge and skills and longtime residents contribute their knowledge and experience, and gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by immigrants to Canada.

w community economic development

NYCH supports newcomer women who are interested in starting their own small businesses.

We provide training on legal requirements for starting a business in Canada, work with them to develop business plans, and connect them with other entrepreneurs and mentors.

How does your organization fit in with the Bathurst-Finch Community Hub?

NYCH has started a m u l t i c u l t u ra l catering business (Delightfully Yours Catering Services) that provides comprehensive training and creates opportunities for newcomer women to build their skills in the food industry.

NYCH is an anchoring partner at the Bathurst Finch hub. NYCH focuses our work in several under-resourced neighbourhoods in northwest Toronto and Bathurst-Finch is one of them. We were very excited about the hub being built in Bathurst-Finch and the potential for the community to have a wide range of services.

For the past four years we had an office at Sheppard and Bathurst, and we decided to close up that office and move to the hub. Our space at the hub is over 1,500 square feet and

NYCH’s healthy living programs encourage newcomer families to build a healthy and active lifestyle through activities such as community kitchens, nutritional workshops and exercise programs.

w children, youth and families

NYCH programs support parents, children and youth in their healthy development. NYCH provides drop-in programs for parents, caregivers and their children from 0 to 6, parenting groups and workshops. For years, NYCH’s after-school programs have provided a safe place for children. NYCH also runs summer camps that provide vital opportunities for newcomer children to make new friends, get lots of exercise, and share in a great Canadian summer experience. NYCH offers youth different opportunities to develop their skills, connect with each other and their communities, and become peer leaders to other youth.

These activities not only provide a safe place for young people to hang out, they are also encouraged to think and plan for the future, and make choices that will help them achieve their goals.

NYCH supports local residents to play a central role in shaping their neighbourhood, through providing training opportunities and facilitating connections to resources.

What is your role in the organization?

I am executive director of North York Community House. I have been the executive director for 21 years. When I started at

NYCH, it was a very small organization with only two staff. Today we have over 100 staff and 200 volunteers.

What has the feedback been like from the local community since you opened the doors there?

People in the community are very excited.

This neighbourhood traditionally has had few services and very limited community space.

They are also very pleased that NYCH is in the hub and we are expanding our services in the community.

We are finding that we are attracting more volunteers and there is a greater demand for programs and services.

People from the community are very pleased with the look and design of the space and have found the hub to be very welcoming.

What’s the difference between the location of the hub and other locations?

There are a couple differences. First of all, the hub houses a wide range of services, while in our other non-hub locations, NYCH is the only organization. This provides us with the opportunity to easily refer community members to other services in the hub when they need them. As mentioned in an earlier question, having other organizations next door provides us with the opportunity to partner with others in order to provide a wider range of services.

Secondly, the hub is newly built and specifically designed as a community hub. We also had the opportunity to design our own space. The hub has great resources such as a

We also have space for childminding for the children of program participants. We also work with the other hub partners to co-ordinate and plan programs together in order to have greater impact.

Usually we rent commercial or community space that is not designed for our services and we usually have limited funds for renovations.

It is very exciting to have space that is new, beautifully designed and that meets our program needs. It is especially exciting to have outdoor space that we envision using for all kinds of programs and initiatives from community gardening to children’s activities.

Your organization’s goal is ‘to enhance the strength and resilience of our neighbourhoods.’ Talk about that goal.

As a neighbourhood centre, one of our goals is to work with the community to support them to improve and make positive changes in their neighbourhood.

We work with community members in Bathurst-Finch to identify changes that they’d like to make in their neighbourhood or new

services that they’d like to see in the community and we support them to make these changes. This could involve providing training in civic literacy or leadership training, connecting them to resources that they need or helping them to advocate with organizations or institutions.

transit stations to introduce Wi-Fi wSubway Two subway stations will have access to free wireless Internet when the service debuts in the latter part of 2013, the TTC confirmed last week.

The transit agency had already committed to installing Wi-Fi on subway platforms on a pilot basis, but the locations of the stations were not known. In a tweet last week, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said Bloor-Yonge and St. George will be the first stations to receive the ad-supported Wi-Fi, which is provided by the telecom company Broadcast Australia.

GO Transit is also running a pilot Wi-Fi program and plans to expand to more locations within six months.

Support for closing Pape during reno A recent TTC survey shows 85 per cent of respondents support closing Pape subway station for an extended amount of time to complete renovations quicker.

A majority of the 2,842 people who took the online survey in April supported closing the station for 12 straight

Only 14 per cent were in favour of keeping to the current construction schedule.

A city official was tasked by Mayor Rob Ford’s executive committee to investigate the prospects of restructuring a $4.5 million loan to cashstrapped BIXI Toronto.

Deputy city manager John Livey was given confidential instructions by the committee on the future of the bike share service.

Despite providing more than a million rides since

its launch in 2011, BIXI is in danger of defaulting on its 10-year loan from the city, of which it still owes nearly $4 million.

In order to survive, BIXI says it needs to expand from 1,000 to 3,000 bicycles and install stations outside the downtown core. Livey is expected to report back to the committee with his recommendations in July. locals for light rail jobs wEmploy

The Toronto Community Benefits Network (TCBN) wants Metrolinx to make local employment a requirement for some of the estimated $4.6 billion worth of construction contracts the provincial transit planning agency is handing out for the completion of the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown and Scarborough LRT lines.

How well is Toronto hitting its budget numbers so far?

With the Orthodox Easter celebrations coming up this weekend, and a major council meeting next week, the coming week is quiet at Toronto City Hall with the only major committee meeting being the budget committee.

The committee will be looking at two important housekeeping reports – on the operating and capital variances for the three months ending March 31.

Those reports indicate how well the city has managed to stay within its budget for 2013, and they’ll be presented at the meeting.

board seeks capital boost wLibrary The Toronto Public Library Board is looking to increase the system’s capital budget by $1.049 million.

It’s not as bad as it sounds.

The library wants to use nondebt funding that’s become available for the Scarborough Civic Centre Library.

The board also wants to accelerate the renovation of the Mount Dennis Branch project to the tune of $220,000.

The two men then fled the scene.

Dylan Palumbo, of Toronto, is the city’s 20th homicide of the year.

The suspects are each described as having light brown complexions and are about 5’ 8” tall.

Police are also looking to speak with a woman, aged 20 to 25, with a tan complexion, who left the scene prior to the murder.

Threat of school bus strike looms in Toronto More than 4,000 students across Toronto may be without transportation to school as early as this week due to a possible school bus strike, the city’s public and Catholic boards warned in a joint release on Monday.

The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) and Toronto

District School Board (TDSB) have been advised by Stock Transportation that two unionized school bus divisions have provided notice to the company of possible strike action beginning as early as Wednesday, May 1.

The strike could affect upwards of 730 students from across the TCDSB

and 3,460 in the TDSB. Negotiations are continuing.

Both the TCDSB and TDSB said they are working to minimize the effects of any job action on students and families.

‘Zombies’ highlight need for proper transit funding RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A lack of adequate public transportation has transformed Toronto-area commuters into a mindless, shuffling zombie mass according to a new online video.

Stop the Zombie Madness depicts the senselessness of getting to work in a gridlocked region. Produced by Pembina Institute, the one minute and five second video clip, which debuted last week on YouTube, shows a desolate urban landscape inhabited by undead commuters stuck in traffic or waiting for a bus that never comes.

Zombie makeup aside, it’s an all-too-familiar experience for the millions of exhausted residents who feel a little deader each day struggling to get to work, says Cherise Burda, a spokesperson for Pembina, an environmental think tank.

“Transit, for a lot of people

in this region, is a really slow bus they wait half an hour to catch,” said Burda, transportation policy director for Pembina.

Since it debuted on the group’s YouTube channel last week, the video has generated over 4,000 views. It also contains a link to a web portal leading to information on the Metrolinx Big Move transportation plan and an online pledge created by the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance for new transit funding.

Burda said the project was an effort to engage a broad audience in advance of funding recommendations to pay for the $50 billion Big Move to be released by provincial planning agency Metrolinx at the beginning of June.

Pembina had originally planned to canvas commuters about their nightmarish travel experiences, but opted for a short film on zombies, whose current pop-culture relevance according to Burda would help draw in people

“What people are missing is the backstory. Our video was one way of trying to

reach people using a type of medium they can relate to,” said Burda. “And if they like the video they might become interested in the issue and understand it’s more compli-

cated than it might seem.”

While recent polls have shown residents are torn over he idea of new revenue tools, she said Pembina’s research indicates people will sup-

port new taxes and fees if the collected revenues are dedicated to a specific issue or project.

In British Columbia, for example, a carbon tax to reduce green gas emissions was initially unpopular with voters. But Burda said polls taken two years after the tax was introduced showed widespread support for the measure.

“If people can see the revenues are going somewhere, and are transparent, we see approval ratings increase after implementation,” said Burda, pointing to similar examples in Sweden and Norway.

Judging on the success of the campaign, she said Pembina may employ more pro-transit ad campaigns involving the living dead.

“You might start seeing zombie flash-mobs on the subway,” she said with a laugh.
