Ready for CNE’s Rising Star competition Lisa Queen lqueen@insidetoronto.com Last year, nine-year-old Julie Bland wanted to learn how to play the guitar but she was too little to properly hold the instrument. Because her father, James

Bland, is from Hawaii, there are ukuleles in the house so she decided to give one a try and found she loved it. On Monday, Julie will play the ukulele and sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow at the CNE Rising Star Talent Competition.

“I love to perform,” said the budding Taylor Swift, who takes part in talent shows at Arbor Glen Public School, where she is going into Grade 5. “It’s fun. It makes me happy. People say my voice is pretty.” Now in its 28th year, Rising Star is a chance to promote

Teen gets northern exposure in Arctic trek

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

s a child, Mike Ge would put his hand on the standing globe and spin it, often wondering what was up there when it would stop on the polar regions. Part of his question was answered when Ge spent July 9 to 24 in the eastern Canadian Arctic and western Greenland as part of Students on Ice Arctic Youth Expedition. The ship and land-based trip involved 85 international high school students aged 14 to 18, a team of 35 scientists, historians, artists, explorers, educators, innovators and polar experts, and 30 public and private sector leaders. Ge, who said he was “blown away” when he heard about the expedition through a youth environmental leadership program last year, said there is more to the Arctic than just ice and wildlife. “There is a lot of culture, heritage and science,” said the A.Y. Jackson Secondary School student, who will enter Grade 11 in September. “I looked at pictures and videos before I went, but when I was there it was a whole

other experience.” The journey began by flying to Kuujjuaq in northern Quebec to set out on the water. From there, the group spent time visiting communities and other sites of the Torngat Mountains National Park in Labrador and the southern and western coasts of Greenland, before ending the expedition above the Arctic Circle

in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. They then took a chartered flight to Ottawa. Scholarships from his school and Students on Ice covered the majority of the $10,900 cost, with Ge’s parents chipping in $4,000. Days were spent exploring, participating in workshops, doing hands-on research and hiking, not to mention a few encounters

with wildlife, namely beluga and humpback whales, Ge said. “We don’t usually get a chance to visit the north,” he said, adding he experienced the Inuit perspective of the world and way of life. Workshops included beach combing for different organisms, such as animal bones and seaweed, and talking about its history, he said. Other workshops focused on artistic Inuit print makers. The group also took in a youth talent show in Nanortalik, Greenland and spent time in the capital of Nuuk which, to Ge’s surprise, was quite the developed urban area. Ge, who said he was inspired by the expedition, said he hopes to get into social sciences down the road, and would like to take part in Students on Ice’s Antarctic trip, if he’s able to secure a full scholarship for the $14,500 expedition.

Artists’ show and sale at North York’s Art Walk North FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Taking a page out of the Riverdale Art Walk, the second annual Art Walk North will showcase 60 artists and their creations spread out over Mel Lastman Square tomorrow and Saturday. Art Walk North, a sister show to the Riverdale Art Walk that takes place annually in June at Jimmie Simpson Park near Broadview Avenue and Queen Street and surrounding area, will feature both emerging and established artists exhibiting fine art such as paintings, photography, mixed media, printmaking, drawings and sculptures in their own 10x10 tents.

w WHEN: Friday, Aug. 15, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 16, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Rain or shine. w WHERE: Mel Lastman Square, 5100 Yonge St., north of Sheppard Avenue w INFO: www.artistsnetwork.ca/ see-art-buy-art/art-walk-north The free event on Yonge Street, north of Sheppard Avenue, attracted thousands of visitors last year, and the hope is for this year to be just as successful, said Kate Taylor, chair of the Artists’ Network, curator of Art Walk North and Riverdale Art

Walk. “We needed something in the northern area of Toronto,” she said, adding she came up with the idea when noting the lack of public art shows north of Hwy. 401. “People can talk, it’s a relaxed environment. And everything is for sale. Most big art shows are around Queen Street, but that area is so saturated.” Noting the multitude of condominiums in the Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue area and the number of festivals at Mel Lastman Square, Taylor is convinced the area was just right for Art Walk North. “We’re tapping into a different target audience,” she said. “There are a lot of condos in the area, and artists will be showcasing pieces

that are smaller, that can easily fit in small spaces.” And with prices ranging from about $25 to into the thousands, Taylor is confident there will be something for everyone. A preview of Art Walk North will be held inside North York Civic Centre, 5100 Yonge St., between Aug. 11 to 16, with a peak display at about 75 per cent of what the actual exhibit will feature, she said. The Artists’ Network is a membership-based, non-profit organization of artists dedicated to supporting visual artists through, among other things, professional development, entrepreneurship, educational seminars and exhibition opportunities.

Mosquitoes with West Nile virus found in North York sample Mosquitoes taken from a sample in North York have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV), marking the first positive test for the virus in the city this year, Toronto Public Health said Tuesday. “The positive test result is a good reminder for the public to protect themselves from mosquito bites and to remove standing water from property where mosquitoes can breed,” Elaine Pacheco, healthy environments manager for Toronto Public Health, said in a release. Although the risk of becoming infected is low, Toronto Public Health is advising everyone to avoid mosquito bites by following these measures throughout the summer: w Wear light coloured clothing, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, socks and a hat. w Use mosquito repellent approved by Health Canada and follow product instructions. w Avoid areas with large numbers of mosquitoes, especially during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. w Make sure your home has tight-fitting screens on windows and doors. Toronto Public Health has 43 mosquito traps throughout the city and submits mosquitoes for laboratory testing every week. As part of the City of Toronto’s WNV mosquito reduction program, catch basins and other areas of standing water are treated with larvicide to reduce mosquito breeding. The WNV virus was discovered in Toronto in 2001. In 2012, Toronto Public Health reported 100 positive mosquito pools and 94 human cases. In 2013, 18 positive mosquito pools and 12 human cases were reported. To date in 2014, no human cases of WNV have been reported to Toronto Public Health.

Tapping into city’s citizen engagement

T

he fabulous attendance at this summer’s festivals in Toronto is a great indication of our willingness to participate in community activities. Now the challenge is how to turn those once-a-year adventures into community enrichment throughout the year. The city is rich with artistic, cultural and culinary festivals – a great opportunity for community-building. This past weekend’s Taste of the Danforth, which organizers say attracted a staggering 1.6 million people over three days, is festival participation at its best. Looking ahead to this weekend, there’s the firstever Toronto Summer BBQ and Ribfest taking place at Downsview Park. And, of course, the Canadian National Exhibition kicks off its two-and-a-half-week run tomorrow. Good turnouts mean people are engaged. We see it here at our website, insidetoronto.com, where our our view community calendar of events seen a significant increase Make the most has in events posted by the comand in the increased of our cultural munity number who have searched the diversity site for events this summer. To see our events listings, to submit an event or find out more, visit bit.ly/torontocalendar for everything you want to know. How do we take that obvious citizen engagement we see and get it applied on a more year-round basis? Imagine the possibilities. Cultural events happen throughout the year. These are opportunities to learn more about the city and the people who live here. It’s more than just festival life – it’s the lifeblood of the city. Now couple that with cooking courses offered in a myriad of locations. So challenge yourself. Pick one culture unfamiliar to yourself and learn to make a meal from that culture. Seek out one artist or musician and become familiar with their style of music. Learn the origin of the peoples and come to appreciate why people of other ethnicities chose to call Toronto home. The exposure that’s taking place right now of different cultures in Canada’s most diverse city is a critical piece of Toronto’s continuing evolution. We are rich in culture. Make the most of the opportunity. Find out more about the communities that make up the city – and find avenues for personal growth in the experiences we share, in the teaching of our children and a growing appreciation of Toronto as the city it is today.

Gearing up for the fall hockey season Summer slipping away? Its replacement is around the corner...

W

ith seemingly everybody bemoaning summer slipping away, I prefer to look on the bright side: it means another hockey season is just around the corner. So, to celebrate its impending arrival, I made my annual mid-August visit to Nothing And I Mean Absolutely Nothing But Hockey to check out the latest gear. Once inside I was treated to a tear-jerking slice of Canadiana: a grandpa taking his grandson to buy some hockey equipment. Junior: “Here they are, Grandpa. These are the ones I want. The Zdeno Chara Indestructible Extra Strength Deluxe Ultra Supreme Magna 5000s.” Grandpa: “What the heck are those, Junior?” Junior: “You know very

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY well. Shin pads.” Grandpa: “Shin pads? That looks like the armour they were wearing in that battle for Middle Earth in Lord Of The Rings.” Junior: “So what did yours look like?” Grandpa: “Nothing. We didn’t have shin pads in those days. We used wornout Sears catalogues. We stuffed them under our jeans.” Junior: “Is that so?” Grandpa: “You kids today are spoiled rotten with all this high-tech fancy shmancy stuff. Like that hanging on the wall. What are those monstrosities up there anyway?” Junior: “Now I know you’re pulling my leg. You don’t expect me to believe you also didn’t have shoulder pads.” Grandpa: “Who had

shoulder pads? We draped beach towels over our arms. That was all we needed.” Junior: “But you wore hockey gloves, right?” Grandpa: “Please. We wrapped old, ripped and torn sweat socks around our hands.” Junior: “What about those composite hockey sticks over there? Are you also going to try and tell me you didn’t have them?” Grandpa: “We didn’t know how to pronounce composite in those days, let alone make a hockey stick that way.” Junior: “So you’re telling me that all you had were those prehistoric wooden sticks I saw when you took me to the Hockey Hall of Fame?” Grandpa: “Who had sticks of any kind? We used sawed off fence posts.” Junior: “Let me guess, you also didn’t have pucks.” Grandpa: “Good guess.

We used heels of worn-out shoes.” Junior: “And what did you do for skates, pray tell? Tape knives to the bottom of our feet?” Grandpa: “No, smarty pants. We didn’t tape knives to the bottom of our feet.” Junior: “That’s a relief.” Grandpa: “Tape wasn’t strong enough in those days. We had to staple them on.” Junior: “You’re too much, Grandpa. Can I just get the shin pads so we can go.” Grandpa: “No problemo. But before we head home, I’ve got to make a quick pitstop at Supplies-R-Us next door. I plum forgot. I’ve got a pick-up game Sunday night and I’m fresh out of staples.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Election still very much Ford’s to lose Does anyone in Toronto love Olivia Chow or John Tory as much as Irene Borecky and thousands like her love Rob Ford? That could be the key question in this fall’s election, which is still Ford’s to lose. Standing in line at Ford Fest recently, hearing people seriously compare the man to Jesus Christ, Pierre Trudeau and, strangest of all, David Crombie, I was struck by how unconditional is the love Ford’s fans give him. Some of us want to think politics isn’t a personality contest, and that the person with the best ideas, the best political record, should be elected Toronto’s mayor. That’s not how it works with most people, who vote politicians in because they like them. And Ford’s core supporters love him, many thinking, as Borecky does, that other politicians “are fakes,” and Ford’s different. “He’s one of us. He’s like us. He’s fallible like the rest of us,” said Borecky’s friend Maria F., who didn’t give her full name. “We’re not judgemental people.” plans to add more bus services wGO With September fast approaching, GO Transit has announced it will add more service by the end of the month. More bus trips are promised by the regional transit agency, including a new weekend bus route between York University and the University of Waterloo when the modified GO schedule goes into effect Saturday, Aug. 30. For more information about the scheduled changes, visit www.gotransit.com New ID rules for student fares High school and middle school students will no longer need photo IDs to receive discounted fares, the transit commission announced this week. The policy applies to students between the ages of 13 and 19, although TTC staff will still have the option to ask for some form of photo ID, either TTC or government issued, for proof of age.

w

mike adler the city Actually, many Ford fans are judgemental people. They judge him innocent, and others guilty. And many point to transgressions or admissions of drug use by other politicians, seeing a double standard applied to Ford. Standing with Ford Nation flags in her hair at the somehow-not-a-campaign-event in Scarborough’s Thomson Park, Borecky called Tory, a man she said she voted for in the past, a “spend-and-tax Liberal.” She said the former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader’s decision to put his campaign headquarters at Bay and Wellesley streets, “where the Bay Street money is,” was stupid. Based on how it looks, she may be right. Other people in the park gave only vague reasons why Ford should be re-elected; such as he tries to keep taxes low, or “hasn’t stolen a cent from us.”

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Post-secondary school students will continue to require photo ID to purchase and use special Metropasses available at a discounted rate from colleges and universities. The new rule goes into effect Sept. 1. corridor art exhibit wRail

A new art exhibit by University of Toronto urban design students highlights the development potential of the West Toronto Rail Corridor. Tapping the Potential of the West Toronto Rail Corridor features planning designs and proposals created by the students intended to better connect the corridor with surrounding neighbourhoods. The corridor currently serves local GO and subway operations, and as of 2015 the Union Pearson Express air-rail link. The corridor also includes the West

Mostly, though, you sense Ford reminds Ford fans of themselves: they feel they’ve been cheated by the city somehow; they’ve made mistakes, battled addictions, or felt pressured to quit something, but kept going. The mayor’s scandals have blurred into a vague smudge that can be dismissed by the faithful as no big deal. Love for Ford will survive an October defeat, since, as Ford Fest-goer Pat Mason explained, none of the man’s opponents, should they beat him, can manage the city without his help. “If he doesn’t win, he’s not going to lose,” Mason predicted. “We will still look at him as the mayor.” Thelma Casimir, holding a hamburger, said she’s praying for him, and pronounced him perfect. “He went through hell. My man is back in shape.” Tory, or Chow, need some of that same adoration if they’re going to win. Metroland Media Toronto reporter Mike Adler is on the city hall beat while David Nickle is on vacation.

GO is offering early bird Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) passes leading up to the annual summer fair’s opening this weekend. Until Friday, attendees can purchase a special pass from most GO outlets that will allow for all-day travel for $36, a discount, GO says, of 36 per cent compared to the regular travel pass rate. After Friday, the price of the pass jumps to $56. As well, military veterans attending the annual Warriors’ Day Parade Saturday will be able to ride for free, along with one guest. The TTC is also expected to offer a similar service. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

Sunnybrook one of seven recognized >>>from page 1 technology that allow authorized clinicians to access critical patient information in a timely manner. “I looked at results when I was in France,” said Dr. Edward Etchells, medical director of information services at Sunnybrook, who demonstrated how their electronic medial record (EMR) system called SunnyCare works. In addition to providing secure access to patient records on desktop computers and mobile devices, SunnyCare allows for increased collabo-

ration and communication between health care teams, Etchells noted. The for-clinicians byclinicians system is also user friendly, effectively reducing the need for extensive training for authorized personnel to use SunnyCare. “They love it,” said Etchells, adding it’s widely used with 17,000 log-ins counted in May alone. Sunnybrook became one of seven health care providers across Canada to receive the LEADing Practice Award presented by Canada Health Infoway in partnership with

Accreditation Canada. Federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver and Don Valley West MP John Carmichael were on hand to applaud the work of Sunnybrook staff. “It’s a very impressive system,” Carmichael said. Michael Green, president and CEO of Canada Health Infoway, also recognized Sunnybrook for continuing to raise the innovation bar in Canada through the use of SunnyCare.

stage presence, showmanship Contestants are judged on their natural ability, audience appeal, stage presence and showmanship and quality of their performance. The grand champion of the junior division, which includes competitors aged five to 12, will win $1,000 while the grand champion of the youth division, for participants aged 13 to 25, will take home $2,500. Singh, 19, who lives in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood, will be singing her own rendition of the Bruno Mars song Locked Out of Heaven on Aug. 18. “I’ve been performing for the past two years at different urban music festival,” said Singh, who in September begins her first year of communications studies at York University. Last year, she was the secondplace Y Factor winner as part of Yorkgate Mall’s Yorkgate Idol competition. “I just really have a passion for singing. Even though I am going to school for communications, I will always be singing,” said Singh, who also enjoys acting and playing the piano and drums. Mandel, who lives in the area of Sheppard Avenue and Yonge Street, will play guitar and sing an acoustic

version of Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel with her friend Amir Brandon. Rising Star is her first competition, although she has been performing at open mic events. “I’ve been singing forever,” said Mandel, who competes Aug. 21. “It’s what I love to do. I love to perform.” Mandel finds it compelling to be on stage and make audiences happy. The 19-year-old, who enjoys acting, also writes music and is working on releasing an EP. Kazman, 21, who just graduated from Western University’s media, information and technoculture program, will sing Hallelujah when she competes Aug. 19. up for the challenge This is her second time trying out for the Rising Star competition. Last year, the judges weren’t impressed with her song choice, Read All About It by Emili Sande, because it wasn’t risky enough. “They told me, ‘You have a great voice, don’t get us wrong, but the song did nothing for your voice,” said Kazman, who lives near Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue. She said she’s up for the challenge this year. “I love being in front of people. I love meeting new people,” she added. “I love showing my talent and showing feeling through music.”

Public Notice – Route Update Iroquois Markham

Brockville Oshawa

Proposed Pipeline Route

Belleville

Port Hope Highway

Greater Napanee Kingston

N

Existing Natural Gas Pipeline Existing Compressor Station Existing Compressor Station (additional compression to be added)

TransCanada would like to take this opportunity to update you on the Eastern Mainline Project. The proposed project is needed to meet firm service commitments following the proposed transfer of a portion of the Canadian Mainline capacity to crude oil service from natural gas services as a part of the Energy East Project. The project is also required to meet growing market demand for new supplies of natural gas from the U.S. Northeast. TransCanada is proposing to add new natural gas pipeline facilities to the existing Canadian Mainline system in Ontario. These new facilities would be added in sections between Markham and the Township of South Dundas, on the southern arm of the Eastern Triangle. The preliminary scope of the project included the construction of approximately 370 km of pipeline. TransCanada has now finalized contracts with commercial shippers and determined a refined scope in order to ensure the appropriate amount of capacity is constructed to meet TransCanada’s existing and new firm contractual commitments. The proposed project scope now includes approximately 250 km of 36 inch pipeline with the addition of nine new 11 MW compressor units to be installed at five existing compressor stations. This project is a vital addition to the Canadian Mainline system and will provide homes, businesses, schools and hospitals in Ontario

and Quebec with a safe and reliable source of natural gas. TransCanada has considered a number of routing options as part of the consultation process with interested landowners and stakeholders. An initial proposed route was shared in project materials that were provided at Open Houses held between May and June 2014 and during other outreach activities this year. During the Open Houses and as part of ongoing conversations with landowners and stakeholders, we received important feedback and have refined the route for the pipeline. We are continuing our engagement efforts and welcome any additional feedback as we refine route deviations. We welcome any questions or comments you may have. TransCanada anticipates submitting our application to the National Energy Board in the third quarter of 2014. Engagement will be ongoing throughout the NEB review process and the construction and operation phases of the project. For more details on the updated Eastern Mainline Project route please visit our website. You can reach us through email or phone at the contact info listed below.
