North York’s Elisabeth Linton is one of eight finalists for Walmart’s Mom of the Year Award. After making it to the Top 20, the mother of three found out in early August she will move on to final round. The winner will be chosen at a red carpet dinner in Toronto around Oct. 6. The contest was started last year to celebrate “amazing mothers across the country,” according to Walmart Canada. Almost 17,000 stories were submitted. The Mom of the Year will receive a $100,000 donation to the cause or charity of her choice, $10,000 for herself, a day of pampering in Toronto, and a seat on next year’s selection committee. Night Steps raises funds for CNIB under the stars lISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com When Lauren Wu was just four months old, nagging doubts over a “glint” in her eyes led her family to seek medical attention in China, where they lived at the time. She was diagnosed with cataracts, a clouding of the lenses, at the back of her eyes. “I think it’s quite rare because they were trying to do genetic tests on my mom and dad to see what happened and they still couldn’t find out how I ended up with cataracts,” said Lauren, now a poised and friendly 17-yearold, while sitting in the lobby of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) on Bayview Avenue north of Eglinton Avenue. When Lauren was about two-years-old, the family
“
Vision loss doesn’t stop you. You should just learn to make the best of it and try to bring yourself forward. – Lauren Wu
moved to Toronto so she could undergo eye surgery, which involved removing the cataracts but also taking out the lenses of both eyes. Doctors tried, but were unable, to implant artificial lenses, leaving Lauren with permanent vision loss. “I think it (my vision) is not normal. It wouldn’t be severe because I have some vision so it would be moderate. I think I have 70 to 80 per cent vision but it varies,” she said. While Lauren can see “general” shapes of people and things, she can’t make out fine features,
“If you ask me, ‘Do I have any freckles or do I have lipstick,’ I couldn’t tell you,” said the North York resident, who lives near Wilson Avenue and Allen Road. Lauren, who is going into Grade 12 at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute, has learned to overcome her vision limitations, thanks in large part to the CNIB. On Saturday, she will take part in the organization’s inaugural CNIB Night Steps event, a five-kilometre fundraising walk under the stars. The CNIB provides programs geared to helping blind and partially-sighted Canadians have the same opportunities as their sighted peers, the organization said. Without the right supports, many children with vision problems struggle with rou-
tine tasks such as walking independently, learning to read and achieving success in school, the CNIB said. There are more than 23,000 Canadian children with vision problems. Only 45 per cent will graduate from high school and only 35 per cent will be employed as adults, the CNIB said. Of those who do find jobs, almost half will earn less than $20,000 a year, it added. Lauren, who describes herself as naturally quiet, credits the CNIB with teaching her to be vocal about her needs. “I’ve been to a ton of programs here. I learned advocacy really young and independence really young,” she said. “I think I’m by nature a shy person. I’m pretty introverted as a person. Having vision problems has helped me advocate for things because advocating for what I need...
has helped me bring myself forward.” Of all the supports she has received through the CNIB, Lauren is particularly impressed with two courses she took through the organization. At 14, she attended a sixmonth program about living with vision problems in the real world. “It m o t i v a t e d m e t o become academically and socially better and have a positive outlook on life,” she said. “I think (having a problem with) vision is a barrier you overcome.” Lauren, who plans to study international trade and then go to law school to become a corporate lawyer, was thrilled with the second program, which invited successful business people with vision challenges to share their stories.
“Vision loss doesn’t stop you. You should just learn to make the best of it and try to bring yourself forward,” she said. walk set for Saturday Lauren is excited about p a r t i c i p a t i n g i n Ni g h t Steps. “I think what the CNIB does, their mandate, is to help (blind and partially sighted people) overcome their vision loss and basically help them function and do things as ‘normal’ people would and this fundraiser helps collect (money) for the CNIB,” she said. Night Steps will be held Aug. 17 at Coronation Park at 711 Lake Shore Blvd., west of Bathurst Street. For more information, visit www.cnibnightsteps.ca or call Rebecca Exley at 416486-2500 ext. 8639.

oug Holyday’s empty seat at Toronto City Council needs to be filled and a decision has to be made soon as to whether it’s through appointment or byelection. Many have spoken out in favour of a byelection, including Mayor Rob Ford who’s stated that it’s what people want, what they deserve, to be able to democratically elect their own city representative. Ford’s trying to arrange a special council meeting this month where he hopes to get council’s support in pushing it through. The only voice of opposition so far has been Holyday himself. Though he would normally favour a byelection, due to the fact that the general municipal election is just around the corner 2014), he believes it’s our view (October more practical to fill the seat with appointment. Filling empty anIt’s because of these circumseat by election stances, that we have to agree. Even if council votes for a not practical byelection and the process is expedited, a new councillor won’t be voted in until late this year, perhaps early next and then council will officially only be in session for seven months – a time during which campaigning for the fall election will be swinging into high gear. And though the price tag for a byelection (pegged at $175,000 to $225,000) may be a drop in the bucket from a city wide perspective, there’s no question some other good use could be found for it. If Ford wants to keep to his cost-cutting mandate, here’s a place to do it. An appointment should be made and it should be someone who’s from the ward and has a proven track record of involvement in that community. The people of Ward 3 certainly deserve that. But, to avoid giving this person an unfair advantage heading into the fall election, council should insist that the appointee refrain from entering the race in 2014. With all this discussion about what people want, there’s one opinion that’s notably absent from this debate: that of the people. Residents – particularly those in Ward 3 – need to tell the city’s councillors and the mayor what they prefer to have happen. Exercise your democratic right, email them (cc us) and make sure that whatever happens – it’s because you really wanted it and not just because someone said you did.

Replacing Holyday: a bone of contention Filling former Etobicoke Centre Councillor Doug Holyday’s Ward 3 council seat will make for a contentious meeting later this month. Reassuringly, council will probably make its decision according to policy and select someone representative of the area. The trouble is, it will do so because it cannot decide otherwise. In filling a vacancy, council established a policy to fill vacancies through byelection if held before Nov. 30 prior to an election year, or otherwise through appointment. In this case a byelection cannot be organized before January of 2014, which is an election year. So according to policy, council ought to make an appointment. Advocates of this perspective point out that a byelection will cost up to $225,000, and only six council meetings remain in the term.
david soknacki beyond the headlines So it is surprising that Mayor Rob Ford is in favour of a byelection. “You cannot put a price on democracy,” he says. Equally surprising is the view from some of his spendthrift colleagues who have discovered frugality and are in favour of an appointment. While the opposing sides may not want to publicly declare their interests, their motivation is transparent. Should council decide in favour of a byelection, the mayor will have an excellent place to run field trials for next year’s election. He can expect a friendly reception in Etobicoke to launch ideas, the opportunity to find new campaign workers, another excuse to canvass door-to-door, plus the bonus of having someone else pay for the
campaign. With the mayor’s experienced team, home turf and willingness to use political muscle, the elected candidate will have obligations to the mayor – obligations that will come for repayment during the balance of the term and into the next mayoral campaign. On the other side, the mayor’s opponents are looking to their very different interests. Should council make an appointment, the new councillor will be very aware of the limits to the mayor’s power. By convention, if not always practice, the new councillor inherits the office and committees of his predecessor, and does not seek election, severely limiting the ability anyone to exert influence. In short, it suits council to create a new member loyal to itself rather than to the mayor. Council is likely to make that decision. Here is a case where
the mayor stands against city policy, is in favour of higher cost, and takes a stand directly contrary to the personal advancement of many councillors. Further, he has lost control of council, including a number from his executive committee. In the past, the community council where the vacancy occurred held a special session, and full council concurred in the local decision. Usually the appointee came from the community council area, and was similar in outlook to the former councillor. It may happen again, mainly because council is so deadlocked. Members have enough respect for local tradition, even if only to preserve their own privileges, and they will listen to the remaining members from Etobicoke. Holyday will be missed by Ford
I
n a couple of days it’ll be official. Doug Holyday, the former mayor of Etobicoke, councillor for Ward 3 (Etobicoke Centre) and deputy for Mayor Rob Ford will have left the building, to become Toronto’s lone Progressive Conservative MPP at Queen’s Park. Will Ford miss him when he’s gone? Based on Holyday’s agile defence of the mayor’s nocturnal ramblings last weekend at the Taste of the Danforth? Almost certainly. The mayor has been in this apparently inebriated place before: in this case in a state that most reasonable observers would surmise to be impaired, alone, near his SUV, looking for a party and finding one amid a gleeful crowd of east-Danforth revellers and their snapping, filming cellphone cameras. Social media was abuzz; the mayor’s colleagues on council, aghast. Once again, Toronto’s news media gathered outside the elevator in front of Ford’s office, to follow up on Ford’s assertion Sunday on radio that he’d just had “a couple” of beers
david nickle the city and the whole thing was blown out of proportion. Holyday came out swinging, suggesting that those media – and presumably the good people of Greenwood and Danforth – were exaggerating the mayor’s condition, and he worried about the “toll” all this attention would take on the mayor. When a reporter asked: what about the “tone” of the mayor’s behaviour, Holyday feigned lawyerly mystification at what that word meant. When another reporter asked about the seemingly sloshed mayor’s proximity to his vehicle, counsel-cum-deputyfor-the-mayor Holyday demanded to know if the journalist was accusing Ford of driving drunk. The only bone that he threw was acknowledging that the mayor might not get enough sleep sometimes, and should get a driver. In short: Holyday spun it like a pro, turning Ford’s embarrassing and frankly
pitiable lapse on Friday night into a mob-driven assault on a good man. Aside from his own brother, Councillor Doug Ford, the mayor has few allies on council that will contort themselves so readily to cover his backside. When Norm Kelly, Holyday’s named replacement, spoke with the media just hours before the mayor’s arrival on the Danforth, he made it clear that he was fundamentally interested in the well-being of the city and left it at that. Other allies on the executive committee weren’t much more supportive following the Friday night crawl. Fact is there are few such as Holyday left on council, so able to combine patrician grace and charm with such well-honed yet utterly malleable partisan instincts, to assert that black is indeed white and defend a mayor who won’t accept the intervention he appears to need. He’ll be missed all right.

Three charged in Yusuf Ahmed’s murder Man, 74, dies after being TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Police made quick arrests this week in the city’s latest homicide. Yusuf Ahmed, 21, was gunned down Monday just after 3 p.m. in the AlbionWeston roads area outside a condominium building. He was rushed to a hospital trauma centre where he later
died. Po l i c e i n v e s t i g a t o r s arrested a 19-year-old man and two male minors around 5:30 p.m. Monday. All three are charged with first-degree murder. Officers made the arrests thanks, in part, to the assistance of neighbours, Toronto police 23 Division Supt. Ron Taverner said Wednesday morning.
“It was a lot of good police work, quite frankly, and help from the public which is always what we strive to get. Without the support of the community, a lot of these crimes would go unsolved,” Taverner said. Ahmed was from the general area and known to frequent the area, the superintendent said. ‘Amazing’ mothers celebrated in contest >>>from page 1 choice; $10,000 for herself and a day of pampering in Toronto. Linton’s daughter, Elisa, was progressing normally until age four, when she began to develop speech problems. Doctors at The Hospital for Sick Children diagnosed the little girl with Sanfilippo syndrome, a rare recessive autosomal genetic disease and one of seven mucopolysaccharide disorders. It occurs in about one in 24,000 births. Children with Sanfilippo syndrome are missing an essential enzyme that breaks down sugars, resulting in a build-up of them in the brain and other organs, ultimately stopping development. Loss of speech typically occurs by age seven, and by age 10 sufferers are generally confined to a wheelchair, then bedridden by 14. The decline will be accompanied by hyperactivity, sleep disorders, mental regression and dementia, and will finally lead to an early death. There is not currently treatment or a cure. Most children do not live past their early teens.

Now 19, Elisa can no longer speak or walk and can’t feed herself. Noting very little research into Sanfilippo syndrome has been done, Linton and her husband, Randall, decided to start up The Sanfilippo C h i l d r e n’s R e s e a r c h Foundation 14 years ago, for which Linton is director. Epilepsy Toronto issues call-out; launching new seizure support project Are you a senior who has experienced seizures? Epilepsy Toronto wants to hear from you. The support agency is launching a project aimed at supporting the growing number of adults 55 and older who live with epilepsy or who have had seizures as a first step toward identifying the popula-
tion’s needs. Andrea Lagios, Epilepsy Toronto’s diversity outreach co-ordinator, said in a statement: “It’s incredibly important that we hear from older adults living with epilepsy, especially people who started having seizures later in life, so that we can start to develop the programs now that will meet
their needs in the future.” One in 100 Canadians live with epilepsy. It is the third most-common brain condition affecting older adults, Epilepsy Toronto reports. Contact Epilepsy Toronto at 416-964-9095 or email Andrea Lagios at andrea@ epilepsytoronto.org

Science Centre’s Human Edge will explore body’s limits Visitors to the Ontar io Science Centre will be able to explore the limits of what the human body can achieve at an exhibit opening in December. The 900-square metre (10,000-square-foot) AstraZeneca Human Edge, featuring 55 exhibits, will be the Science Centre’s first new permanent exhibition hall in seven years.
Visitors will be able to examine what athletes, adventure-seekers and survivors can achieve through training and in extreme conditions, the Science Centre said in a statement. “What are the boundaries of the human ‘machine’? How far can we push our own limits? the statement said. Human Edge will be
grouped into five themes, the statement said. ••• w In the Beginning will look at what happens during pregnancy. w Mind and Body Limits will see how the muscular, skeletal and circulatory systems affect strength, endurance and aging. Visitors will hear stories about real people
who have pushed the edges of what has been considered humanly possible. w Personal limits will explore the activities of running, cycling, rowing and dance. w Pushing Past the Limits will show how the body copes when it is pushed beyond its limits, including how it deals with concussions, brain injuries, broken
bones, diabetes and nutritional imbalances. w Outer Limits will look at what happens when people push their bodies to the limits in extreme conditions such as the depths of the ocean or on mountain tops. For example, the exhibit Single Breath will show divers descending to depths of more than 100 metres on a single breath of air.
Human Edge, sponsored by pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, has been developed, produced researched and designed by Science Centre staff in collaboration with a wide variety of experts, the statement said. The Science Centre is at 770 Don Mills Rd. Visit www. ontariosciencecentre.ca for admission costs and other details.

Toronto’s count of street homeless shows growing number of seniors DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s 2013 count of street homeless shows numbers that have increased by 24 per cent from 2009 – and the number of seniors in the homeless population has doubled in that time. As well, more than 15 per cent of the 447 individuals surveyed on the night of April 17 said they were veterans of military service. That question – are you a military veteran? – was asked for the first time in the 2013 survey, so it’s impossible to compare it to the snapshot studies completed in 2006 and 2009. But other demographics among those homeless who slept outdoors showed marked increases since 2009. More than a third of the group identified as Aboriginal, an increase
of 18 per cent, and the percentage of seniors increased from 4.7 in 2009 to 10 per cent in 2013. Trinity-Spadina Councillor Adam Vaughan, who represents neighbourhoods in the city’s core where the homeless are most visible, said the results of the survey don’t surprise him. “You see it on the streets and see it in the way the housing referral system is being used,” said Vaughan. “There are more people on the streets now because the shelter system is shrinking. We have stopped building housing and as a result there is no capacity to solve the problem.” Vaughan said Torontonians need to apply pressure to the federal and provincial governments to invest in new affordable housing. “We have to start building housing, not just
repairing it. Otherwise we are going to end up with tragedies on city streets this winter.”
