The mural, titled Love or Love after a popular expression used by Lawrence Heights youth living in Toronto Community Housing, was unveiled Tuesday. Created by Lawrence Heights youth under the mentorship of project co-ordinator Joshua Brandt and professional artist Sean Martindale, the colourful mural is made up of words love or love, home, limitless and heights, which span across four walls of the underpass situated at the south entrance of Yorkdale Shopping Centre. extreme sense of collective pride and respect for each other.” Brandt said there are a lot of unknowns and anxiety when it comes to the 20-year revitalization project, which will see replacing the 1,208 city-owned housing units and adding 4,400 new market-value ones, but it’s also met with positivity. “I think it’s fabulous,” Brandt said of the mural. “The vibrance is expressed in simple words. It can mean a lot of things to different people. It’s a very simple graphic design with large words in vibrant colours. I hope people from Lawrence Heights and elsewhere take the opportunity to check it out, It’s a wicked new landmark in Lawrence Heights.” The revitalization project will bring an estimated 16,000 new residents to the area bounded by Hwy. 401, Bathurst Street, Lawrence Avenue and Dufferin Street. Plans for the mixed-income neighbourhood include trail networks, parks and open space, a community centre and, perhaps most importantly, a connection to other neighbourhoods, which is currently lacking due to the Allen Expressway corridor. “Since we painted the first side of the mural all my friends have been telling me how it looks good and how it’s a great improvement for the community,” youth participant Rocco Ursino said in a release. “I’m proud of it, you know, because it’s something I can leave behind. Everyone is saying it’s awesome and beautiful and I know I helped make it happen.”

Toronto athletes compete in Summer Games T

oronto athletes are competing in their own backyards at the Ontario Summer Games Aug. 16 to 19. The opening ceremony of the biannual Olympic-style competition, which features 28 sports at venues across Toronto and surrounding regions, is at 7 p.m. today at Varsity Stadium. About 2,500 athletes from across the province will be competing in sports from rugby and sailing to fencing and softball. Eighteen sports are being held at

19 venues across Toronto. Canoe/kayak is being held in Welland, cycling will take place in Albion Hills, skeet shooting is being held in Oshawa, sporting rifle will take place in St. Catharines and the triathlon is in Brampton. The Games are seen as a gateway to further national and international competition, acting as qualifiers for most of the sports featured during the event, said Crystal Peiris, a games consultant with Sport Alliance of Ontario, the

organization in charge of running the Summer Games for the provincial government. “The Ontario Games are a stepping stone for athletes to competitions like the nationals and the Canada Games, for example,” Peiris said. life skills and values The Games play a vital role in the long-term development of Ontario’s sports organizations and foster “unmatched” life

Tickets give people access to all venues for that day only. Pins are also available at each venue for $25, which give holders access to all venues for the entire competition days.

Give new private home pick-up a chance

Easy steps for better waste diversion H

ow well do you recycle? Do you ensure everything that should go into your green bin makes it in there? The merits of public and private garbage collection systems in Toronto will continue to be debated. It’s a debate that was renewed last week when the residential portion of the city from Yonge Street to the Humber River our view officially switched to a private system of collection. Do your part This now means about half of the city – west of Yonge – has to sort your privatized collection (Etobicoke trash properly has had its residential waste collected privately since before amalgamation). The remainder of the city continues to have its residential waste collected by city employees. But let’s think beyond the method of collection. Let’s think about what we, as residents, are doing. Residents must use this time as an opportunity to embrace better habits when they put out their waste for collection. Are we doing all we can? Doing all we can means ensuring residential waste is properly diverted into garbage, recycling and green bins. This may mean taking a bit of sorting time beforehand. Refer to your waste collection calendar or use the Waste Wizard online tool to get more information if you’re unsure about what goes where. According to figures from the City of Toronto, our recycling has a 20 per cent contamination rate (referring to items that can’t be recycled). Reducing that number is a meaningful and achievable goal. Ultimately, waste that’s properly sorted before collection means more efficient collection. That’s ultimately better for the taxpayer. That’s the benefit. As for the public versus private collection debate, let it continue. Will cost-saving success experienced by this program merit expansion? Will the dire warnings of worsening service be correct? Maybe further adjustments to Toronto’s garbage collection system won’t even be deemed necessary. Regardless of that outcome, there are manageable tasks we as residents can do now. The first week wasn’t perfect for the new service provider, as reports of delays surfaced. A core component of elected representation is ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services. To the editor: Our home pick-up for garbage and green bin was the second day of Green For Life (GFL) taking over the city garbage collection. The left media and councillors are all trying to find fault. But anybody starting a new job needs some time to get up to speed. Well, they were late in picking up but when they did we were stunned to see the street. All containers had been placed back neatly on the properties. There were no upside down containers, they didn’t block driveways and the street looked so uniform it was absolutely refreshing. After years of a uniondriven mentality that didn’t care how many residents they annoyed, this is the right way to start a program. Etobicoke has experienced the same treatment for years with their private contractor. So unlike others I am willing to give them a chance. John Bowen

Bikes in 1930s were licensed, reader recalls

To the editor: During the 1930s in Toronto, every bicycle had to display a metal license prominently on the rear mudguard. In addition to a financial payment, one had to have the bike inspected at a police station. The bike had to have a bell, a rear mirror, a front lamp and a rear reflector. TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Royal Canadian Legion Branch 286, which counts a number of North York residents amongst its membership still needs a few good men and women – armed with $10,000 in donations – to urgently replace its badly damaged roof. Torrential downpours earlier this summer forced officials to cancel numerous events booked in its two halls, which combined, can accommodate 400 people. Cancelled events meant lost revenues, which are critical to the north Etobicoke legion’s financial survival, said Brian Johnston, the legion’s public affairs officer. “We’re in desperate need of roof replacement,” Johnston said. “There’s no way in the world we would be able to operate unless we use the rental facilities. Membership fees – we retain $18 of the $55 fee – don’t come close to covering the cost of running the building. “Replacing the roof and renting the facilities is vital to our survival.” Last month, legion officials launched a Replace Our Roof campaign to raise the $25,000 needed to replace the flat, leaking roof of the red brick building on Irwin Road. A Replace Our Roof fundraiser held last weekend, combined with public donations to date, put a big dent in the fundraising campaign, but nearly $10,000 remains to be

Girl missing, mom charged in abduction Police are looking for a young girl in an alleged parental abduction investigation in North York. Police said Veasna Heng, 31, fled with her daughter, Dystani, 12, during a parental visit July 16 in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue area. Heng surrendered to 31 Division officers Tuesday, but Dystani is still missing. Heng has been charged with abduction in contravention of custody order. A man was arrested last week in connection with a kidnapping last year. Police said they started an investigation Dec. 2 after two men kidnapped a man and demanded money from his family.

The victim, who received serious injuries, was located near Don Mills Road. One suspect was arrested Dec. 3. On Dec. 22, police released the name and photo of a second suspect. Cardinell Junior Senior, 32, of no fixed address, was arrested Aug. 6. He faces charges, including kidnapping, forcible confinement and extortion.

Police are looking for a man after a woman was sexually assaulted in the Finch Avenue and Keele Street area Sunday, Aug. 5. Police said the woman was walking home on a residential street when she walked past a man around 4 a.m. The man turned around to follow her. The woman turned around to confront the man. “The man grabbed her by the wrist and the woman pushed him away,” police said in a news release. “The man

continued to grab her and sexually assaulted her.” The woman then ran from the man and called police. The suspect is black, 5’9” to six-feet tall with brown eyes, short black hair and a thin build. He wore dark jeans, dark running shoes and a black tracksuit jacket with white stripes running down the arms. Toronto police are warning the public to take care after medication was stolen near Wilson Avenue and Avenue Road last week on Wednesday. Partners in fruit tree project ready to pick Not Far From The Tree marks a fifth harvest DANIELLE MILLEY dmilley@insidetoronto.com

n January 2008, Laura Reinsborough sat around her kitchen table with friends and strangers talking about the beginnings of an urban tree harvesting project for Toronto. She had no idea what she was getting herself into. Today, Not Far From The Tree is in the middle of its fifth anniversary harvesting season with hundreds of volunteers descending on fruit trees right across the city harvesting everything from mulberries to cherries to apricots; apples and pears will soon be ready for the plucking. Reinsborough remains an integral part of the organization as its founder and co-ordinator – or the “fruit lady,” as she is routinely recognized as in her St. Clair Avenue and Christie Street neigh-

bourhood. The time was right for the project: homeowners signed up their fruit trees, organizations came on board to benefit from the bounty, and the volunteers lined up to get into a pick. The accolades also started piling up, including an Environmental Award of Excellence from the City of Toronto, an Urban Leadership Award from the Canadian Urban Institute, and, most recently, a Green Toronto Award in the local food category. Reinsborough, herself, has been named a GreenHero, an Agent of Change by the Centre for Social Innovation, and last year she received an Women of the Earth Award from the Yves Rocher Foundation. “I feel really honoured to be a part of it. I feel really grateful to play the role I have in shaping it, to build and grow the project,” she said. “I also feel humbled because this is the work of so many people. It is the 1,200 people who volunteer, the 850 tree owners.” NFFTT began in Ward 21 St. Paul’s in the summer of 2008. It has since grown to 14 wards across the city from Scarborough to Etobicoke to North York.

Homeowners register their tree, then volunteers arrive at a predetermined time for the pick and the fruits of their labour are divided into thirds with a share going to the homeowner, a share to the volunteers and a share to local social service organization, such as Wychwood Open Door. Kathy Biasi is the manager of this day-time drop-in centre that serves homeless and socially isolated people. It’s been a partner since the beginning. “There was always more than what we could use and it was such a shame to let it go to waste,” Biasi said. “To me it made a lot of sense.” The people served by Wychwood Open Door have limited funds to buy fresh food for themselves so the donation was welcome. “It was really nice because it came from the neighbourhood,” Biasi said. As NFFTT expanded to other neighbourhoods it found partnerships with local service groups in each neighbourhood – 30 in total – so the fruit stays in the community. Volunteer Jenna Hossack likes the community aspect of NFFTT. “When I’m labelling my jars

of jam I always name it after the street I picked it from so I remember where it came from,” she said. The St. Paul’s resident first began volunteering two years ago and loved it so much she signed up to be a supreme gleaner, which is a volunteer in charge of a pick. “I jumped at the chance to be more involved,” she said. “I liked meeting new people and being outside.” Hossack, who grew up in the country, said she eats more local fruit in Toronto than she did in her small town. She’s picked cherries, mulberries, apples, pears, plums and serviceberries, but hasn’t gotten to an apricot pick yet. Being a supreme gleaner means she picks three or four times a week. And it means she has a better chance of getting in on a pick, which are a hot ticket in the city. “What’s most overwhelming is there’s interest in every single neighbourhood,” Reinsborough said. “We’ve grown quickly but still we’re nowhere near able to keep up with the demand.” The pick notices go out through an evite and fill up within minutes

as there’s room for just half a dozen volunteers. Hossack, a pastry chef, uses the bounty to make baked goods, as well as jams, apple butter and even mulberry ice cream. She is now much more aware of fruit trees in the city and has shared this discovery with her friends. Reinsborough likes that NFFTT can take credit for some of the growing awareness about urban fruit. “One comment we used to get is, ‘Is it safe to eat?’. We don’t really get asked that anymore. Now we’re starting to show by doing that the food in your backyard is safe,” she said. “Part of what motivates me to continue this project is it’s bringing attention to urban ecology in a way.” NFFTT continues to look for sustainable funding to expand the project, all while helping to mentor other programs in Ontario, across Canada and around the world. Reinsborough said they are also working to find other ways for people to get involved since the demand for picks far exceeds the opportunities. “It’s a happy challenge to have,” she said.
