JBG arts program offers youth chance to dance FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com For two weeks this summer, 35 young people honed their dancing skills at Westview Centennial Secondary School, topping it all off with a showcase last Friday.

The program, run by Just BGRAPHIC (JBG), a youth arts program based in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue community, ran five days a week inside the Finch Avenue and Hwy. 400 school, focusing on hip hop, contemporary, reggae and break dancing.

The showcase, held at Yorkwoods Library Theatre, was made up of different dancing and singing routines, said Kayode Brown, founder and executive director of JBG. “The summer program is totally fun,” Brown said. “We give youths a space that’s safe and where they are

Make school year a real learning experience

abour Day marks the end of summer for most people – in particular those with school-aged children. School supplies are being purchased, vacations have been taken, daycare has been set up, and everyone is getting back to their daily business. Let’s make this school year one where learning is truly an experience, where students – as well as parents and teachers – do more than just study. Let’s see classes become our view increasingly active in making their communities a better place. Great lessons Schools – separate, public, private and French – are the heart in community of any community, where our youngest members learn how to participation become active and connected parts of their school, neighbourhoods, and to a greater extent, the entire city. Beyond learning about those less-fortunate, or issues in society that need fixing, students should be taught social responsibility. And what better ways to do just that than by participating in fundraisers, school events, or helping clean a park? Every corner of the city sees students taking part in activities that directly impact their fellow students and the city as a whole: Summit Heights Public School students in North York became the proud parents of an African penguin after raising the necessary money. Scarborough’s Charlottetown Junior Public School students and staff helped raise $6,500 to build a clean water project in Haiti. For their efforts, they received an inspirational visit from Spencer West (who lost both his legs at the age of five) and his Redefine Possible mission. And this past June, St. Leo Catholic School students in Etobicoke each completed three acts of kindness, in return national and international powerlifting champion Ryan “6-Pack” Lapadat returned during the school’s fundraising Spring Fling flipping a 2,000pound car to break a Guinness World Record and raise money for SickKids Hospital. Students across the city have been honoured for their efforts helping others. Schools as a whole have done their part when dealing with issues in their communities. And for this, all Torontonians should be grateful. That’s why school should be more than just a place students go to bury their noses in books. It should be a place where students go to become active members of a community – whether that be the school community, their neighbourhood, or the city as a whole.

To the editor: Re: ‘Gather facts on Danzig Street shooting,’ Opinion, July 20 David Soknacki’s article is brilliant. It seems that most of the press are pushing for instant answers to problems in the subsidized housing areas. That can only mean a lot of money being misdirected in order to garner some politician a headline. I recently read that residents in social housing cannot evict a tenant who is convicted of a crime or is engaged in criminal activity. Does it make any sense to leave vulnerable residents living in fear of their criminal neighbours? It wouldn’t even cost money to remedy this bizarre situation. The taxpayers have a right to know what really happened on Danzig Street. Anne Robinson

Use land transfer tax to make city safer To the editor: It’s clear we have a problem with guns and gangs in Toronto. So what’s the solution? Do we want Guardian Angels patrolling our streets? Do we want Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti to become a self-imposed czar in the battle of gangs? No. What we do need is an immediate, co-ordinated and comprehensive plan of action that does not take days to form but only hours. When Toronto was hit by an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, community leaders and politicians moved fast to combat Toronto’s reputation from being further bruised. Toronto staged the rock concert of all rock concerts featuring the Rolling Stones. Thousands came out; in fact it was billed as the largest ticketed outdoor

concert in Canadian history. The city didn’t stop there. Festivals such as Luminato were created to showcase to the world that Toronto was indeed a world-class city. In our opinion their actions worked. Why? Because they were focused, efficient and didn’t waste time. They acted because they knew that if they didn’t it would be too late to save Toronto from being branded as a place not to visit. They simply knew what had to be done. How is it then, that when Toronto is hit with such devastating gun crimes, like we have just witnessed this summer, we suddenly blank out or resort to tired practices of dealing with gun crime? We have reams of statistics, bundles of studies and reports from many sources reporting on how to tackle gun crime, but we seem to fail

at moving forward with an actual plan — a new plan. So far the only true action that has been taken is that of the Ontario government and Toronto police. In the immediate aftermath of the Danzig Street shooting, Premier Dalton McGuinty rolled funding for Toronto’s AntiViolence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS). TAVIS includes roving units of 72 officers deployed into Toronto’s hot spots and receives about $5 million a year from the province to operate. In addition, the province will spend $500,000 to support stronger co-ordination among Toronto police and will present an “action plan” in 30 days. The police are placing more “approachable police officers” on our streets and deploying resources accordingly. Great start but not enough to truly combat such a deep social problem. For this

we do need a deeper coordinated effort in tackling the problem. We propose a direct and interim approach that can be deployed immediately until a co-ordinated and comprehensive plan is implemented. This would form council’s response. So far they don’t have one. We propose that 10 per cent of Toronto’s land transfer tax – about $30 million – be immediately deployed to Toronto’s front line responders. These include police, community youth engagers, those managing at risk youth programs, those running on the ground not-for-profits working in gun crime hot spots and the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC). We are engaged and concerned citizens and we want our community leaders to act. Bruce Baker Chris Yaccato

Brown, who has a background in teaching, graphic design and marketing, said he established JBG as a way to engage young people following the death of Jordan Manners, who was shot to death inside C.W. Jefferys in 2007. Brown, who knew Jordan, said the 15 year old’s death deeply affected him. “I knew we had to find ways to get kids engaged in a safe space,” he said. Along with offering programs and awards, Brown said he’s hoping the community will jump on board by donating their Air Miles to help send youngsters to visit prospective post-secondary institutions. Catholic board votes to continue HPV program 8-3 vote shoots down motion to discontinue Cynthia Reason creason@insidetoronto.com Students’ physical health versus their spiritual and moral well-being was debated amongst Toronto’s Catholic trustees on Tuesday, as the board squared off on whether or not to continue its human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) program. The publicly funded Gardasil vaccination program has seen all Grade 8 girls in the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) given the opportunity to be vaccinated against HPV – a sexually transmitted disease cited as the cause of more than 70 per cent of cervical cancers and 90 per cent of genital warts in Canada – since September 2007. The future of the program, however, was called into question at Tuesday night’s meeting of the board as a handful of trustees raised doubts as to Gardasil’s safety, and as to whether or not its administration to 13- and 14-year-old girls runs contrary to the teachings of the Catholic church by promoting premarital sex. “I’ve had a problem with the fact that we’ve been doing this through our schools ever since it first came up,” said Toronto Trustee Barbara Poplawski. “It’s medical, it’s not something that something the Catholic Bishops of Ontario have supported, and it’s not something that I’m comfortable with.” A letter from the Assembly of Catholic Bishops regarding the Gardasil vaccine cautions parents that infection with HPV can only occur through sexual activity, which itself carries “profound risks to a young person’s spiritual, emotional, moral and physical health.” “Sexual activity is appropriate only within marriage,” the letter reads. “Outside of marriage, abstinence is not only clearly the choice that leads to spiritual and moral well-being, but it is obviously the best protection against risks of the disease.” Also at issue, Poplawski argued, is whether or not the board is doing a good enough job fully informing parents of the risks involved with Gardasil. East York/Toronto Trustee Angela Kennedy, herself a registered nurse, agreed with Poplawski’s misgivings and put forth a motion that the TCDSB cease providing the vaccine in its schools immediately – a move that triggered an hour-long debate in which the majority of the trustees spoke out in favour of the HPV vaccine program’s continuation. Etobicoke Trustee and Board Chair Ann Andrachuk defended the program, stating its importance as a free service to families who might not otherwise be able to afford such protection for their daughters – potential side effects or not. To repeat history and deny Catholic parents the opportunity to protect their daughters from HPV and possible cervical cancer, Andrachuk said, would be a shame: “If we take this decision away from our parents, then shame on us because who do we think we are? We’re not medical physicians, we’re not doctors.” Etobicoke Trustee Peter Jakovcic argued Grade 8 is a “critical” time for the HPV vaccination. “I think the purpose of the age of 13/14 is that it is a criti-

cal age, considering puberty and the nature of adolescence – and the fact that there are certain things we can’t control,” he said. “I don’t believe the administration of the vaccine is a prerequisite or leads to what has been insinuated as a promotion of sexual activity amongst our teens. I think it’s in due course with other medical practices that we have.” Toronto Trustee Jo-Ann Davis said a decision to continue the program would signal only that the board has the health of its students in mind. “We are not making any kind of moral statement by making this (vaccine) available. We are making a health statement: we want our girls to live.” Scarborough Trustee Nancy Crawford agreed: “I see this as a health issue, I do not see this as a chastity issue.
