Second Harvest Turkey Drive kicks off this Saturday donate a turkey that volunteers will load into the refrigerated Second Harvest truck on-site. That turkey will then be delivered to Torontonians in need through food banks and meal programs. “What shoppers have really come to love about Turkey Drive

is that they get to select a turkey that will become someone’s holiday meal,” Debra Lawson, executive director of Second Harvest, said in a release. “Providing healthy food to those who are not able to afford what so many of us naturally come to expect, embraces

what the holiday season is all about.” For each turkey donated, Loblaw Inc. will donate $2, up to a maximum of $10,000 in funds, to Second Harvest.

The Friends of Toronto Public Library, North Chapter, has donated its largest sum to date to the Toronto Library Foundation in the amount of $75,000. The donation will go toward the children’s literacy program, Leading to Reading, bringing donations from the branch to more than $1.1 million over the last 21 years. Leading to Reading is free for children in grades 1 to 6 who can communicate in English and who are reading below their grade level or need help with homework. Last year the chapter presented the library with a cheque for $73,000, the largest amount ever given at the time. The funds were raised by Book Ends, North Chapter, which operates a store on the concourse level of North York Public Library. The store mainly raises funds through the sale of books and other items at its site. Book Ends, North Chapter, sells withdrawn library materials, including fiction and non-fiction books, CDs, DVDs, videos, magazines, as well as privately donated books, for 50 cents to $5, with an average price of $1.

Honouring one of North York’s founding families Fannie Sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Patricia Small was an 11-yearold in 1965 when she first learned the history of one of North York’s founding families. McKee Public School’s principal, Charles Proctor, who was also a history teacher, told his Grade 6 class of Jacob Cummer’s significance to the area, as he was one of the first settlers in what is now Yonge Street and Church Avenue. He then walked his class over to the Pioneer Cemetery, at the corner of Yonge Street and Church Avenue, which the Cummer family founded and where Jacob and his wife, Elizabeth, and some of their family are buried. “We were told how hard his life was, and it was difficult to imagine on that warm spring day how cold they must have been in winter,” Small said

during an assembly inside the school’s gymnasium Friday, Nov. 28, where a historical plaque honouring the Cummer family was unveiled by Heritage Toronto. Just a youngster, Small said she was shocked and saddened to see graves of babies who died of illnesses that are curable today. The students cleaned off tombstones, threw out trash, and planted bright flowers on the graves, Small said, adding she learned the importance of looking after the community so everyone could benefit from it. McKee Public School sits on the site where Jacob Cummer built his first home. Among the area’s first settlers, Jacob and Elizabeth immigrated to Upper Canada from Reading, Pennsylvania in 1797. The family acquired 80 hectares of land, later known as Cummer’s Settlement, on

the east side of Yonge Street in 1801 and built a sawmill in 1819 near present-day Cummer Avenue. A grist mill and woollen mill were later added to the complex known as Reading Mills, after Jacob’s birthplace in Pennsylvania. The family also founded a chapel and cemetery at

Yonge Street and presentday Church Avenue. In 1832, Jacob, a successful farmer, entrepreneur and craftsman, set aside a half acre of his property for the chapel that opened two years later, doing much of the construction himself. A cemetery, later known as Pioneer

Cemetery, was established on land donated by another family. The original building was replaced by a brick one in 1856, and later demolished in 1956. The cemetery remains at its original site. Gunild Spiess of the North York Historical Society told students Elizabeth was sitting at the table with her new baby, while Jacob was working to clear the land. Suddenly, an Aboriginal man entered the home and pointed to a knife on the table. Frightened, Elizabeth quickly handed it over, and the man left. Several days later, he came back with a gift: a wooden cradle he had made for the baby, which is still in the possession of the Cummer family, who no longer reside in North York. The plaque will be installed in the spring at Doris and McKee avenues.

Mike Colle: reduce drive-bys through private member’s bill FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com After numerous deaths at the hands of drive-by shooters in Toronto, an MPP is hoping his private member’s bill calling for licence suspension and fines for drivers caught with illegal guns in their vehicles will help curb violence. Eglinton-Lawrence MPP Mike Colle said too many people have died at the hands of those pulling the trigger from inside vehicles – including popular teacher Abshir Hassan, 31, who was fatally shot in a drive-by in Lawrence Heights in July – and a loophole in federal laws

makes it easy for drivers to walk free. “All (the driver) has to say is, they borrowed the car and didn’t know a gun was under the front seat,” said Colle, whose bill passed second reading last Thursday. “Or they’ll say the gun was in their girlfriend’s purse, and they didn’t know it was there, or they’ll get an underage person to say it’s their gun.” The bill, which Colle introduced in May but was then dropped when the June provincial election was called, proposes allowing police officers who have reasonable and probable grounds that a person has an unlawful

We will continue to work with our partners at all levels of government to maintain public safety and ensure that we are doing everything we can to eliminate the presence of illegal guns in our streets.”

Deputy mayors the ‘eyes and ears’ of Toronto

It’s premature to start criticizing Mayor John Tory’s appointments – he’s only been on the job for four days, and having four deputy mayors is surely better than one. Right? At first blush, the selection of his second-incommand, North York’s Denzil Minnan-Wong, and the other three deputy mayors – Scarborough’s Glenn De Baeremaeker (east), Etobicoke’s Vincent Crisanti (west) and downtown councillor Pam McConnell (south) – seems balanced, however, a large swath of the city appears to be left without the ear of Toronto’s freshly minted mayor. It looks like the status quo is how Mayor Tory is approaching the start of the 2104 to 2018 Toronto City Council. Looking for experience was our view the key to the appointments, he said. This is not a bad thing; Mayor’s door it’s shrewd taking into consideration most councillors are must be open the same ones who held those to all on council seats before the election. The mayor is different, but most of council has remained the same – how will Mayor Tory handle this when last term was often difficult? Despite words to the contrary, the left on council seems to be out of the mayor’s inner circle. Granted, De Baeremaeker is by no means on the right and McConnell is a dyed-in-the-wool NDPer, but they have been tasked with bringing issues from large parts of the city to the mayor. How can De Baeremaeker and McConnell bring the many issues of Scarborough and the downtown, respectively, to the fore? Scarborough is a huge area and the downtown core is a complicated part of the city. Tory’s executive committee seems a bit better, with more progressive-voting voices. We ask that Mayor Tory regularly revisit his choices as council progresses – see who is doing a great job, not just a passable job. Perhaps there is room for more names in his inner circle? His door should always be open to councillors who are not directly meeting with him on a regular basis. They deserve an ear (or two) – and through them their constituents – in order to be able to provide our new mayor a true understanding of the diverse city he is now responsible for “uniting”.

It’s December: do you hear what I hear?

I

t may not be beginning to look a lot like Christmas outside, but it’s sure sounding like it inside. The moment the clock strikes December, whenever you flip on a station or go through a door and you hear music being played, it’s likely going to be a familiar holiday tune. All the other genres seem to be placed on hold. Turn on the radio and you could be walking through a winter wonderland. Head out for your daily coffee fix – already being served in a festive cup – and chances are it’s the most wonderful time of the year. Walk into an office and you’ll likely discover Frosty The Snowman. Hit the mall and from the time you arrive to the time you leave it’s jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Even if you just drop in for a dental appointment, over the sound system

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY it’s a safe bet you’ll be reminded that all you want for Christmas is your two front teeth. It’s not just stations and stores providing the tunes, either. The public noticeably begins humming away this early in December, too. I’m part of that chorus. I’ve always found the carols quite catchy and I do more than my share of singing along. But as much as I enjoy the songs, I have a confession to make: I haven’t actually experienced many of the things I’m crooning so emotionally about. Take those chestnuts roasting over the open fire, for example. Truth be told, all these years I’ve never seen any chestnuts roasting over an open fire. Or a closed fire, for that matter. Fact is, I’ve never seen chestnuts roasting, period.

What’s more, I’ve never even eaten a chestnut. But if I do have a chestnut one day I’d like one at room temperature, thank you very much. I wouldn’t know when a roasted chestnut fresh off an open fire is ready for consumption. I don’t want to risk scalding my fingers picking it out of a shell or burning my lips trying to chew on one. Also on the list of things you may hear me singing about this month that I’ve never come across? A hall decked with boughs of holly. Nor would I know where to go to find such a hall or even recognize such a scene inside one if I did see it. I’m not so sure I even know what holly is, to be perfectly honest. Or what a bough is, it embarrasses me to say. I wouldn’t recognize a partridge if it was sitting next to me, for that matter, let alone one in a pear tree. Which I’ve also never seen, by the way. Ditto

for turtle doves. Whether they’re sitting next to me or wherever they hang out. I’ve also never crossed paths with one lord a leaping, let alone 10. Nor did I know lords even have a tendency to leap when the spirit moves them. Yeah, there’s much I don’t know about what I’m singing about this time of year, but that’s not going to stop me. Nor is the weather. Which reminds me, I feel like a double double right now and though it’s evening, dark outside and a little foggy to boot, I’m not the least but concerned I’ll be able to get it. All I have to is flip on my favourite music station. I have a strong feeling the moment I do, I’ll get Rudolph with his nose so bright to help guide me there tonight. our exclusive look

epairs might not have been glamorous, but they were much needed for the almost 200-year-old church near Yonge Street and York Mills Road. St. John’s York Mills Anglican recently underwent a $1.6-million renovation and celebrated with a rededication service Nov. 2. Archbishop Colin Johnson, the Diocesan Bishop of Toronto, preached during the special service, as parishioners sat in new solid wood upholstered chairs, which replaced most of the pews. Administrative offices in the front of the church were moved to the back, making way for an expanded social area with kitchen. Roof repairs were made, and a new outdoor patio will allow members to sip coffee or lemonade under trees instead of gathering in the parking lot. Old hardwood floors were refinished, new carpet and tile flooring were installed, and a 100-year-old Steinway

grand piano was restored. Construction began in February and the sanctuary closed in April for renovations, with services held temporarily in the auditorium until members were welcomed back to the sanctuary during the rededication ceremony. It was the first major renovation to the Don Ridge Drive church in

about 50 years, said Rev. Drew MacDonald, adding funds were raised through the parish and the selling of a small house adjacent to the church property, which it owned. “It just needed to be redone,” he said of the renovations. “Every 40 or 50 years we need to freshen and adapt to modern times.”

St. John’s York Mills Anglican, which has a congregation of 400 families, will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2016. The church began as a 10-metre by 20-metre timber structure built by the community from fallen trees on the land where the church stood. Twenty-five years later, it was replaced with a sturdier stone struc-

ture, which remains to this day surrounded by green space on the crest of the Don Valley. Though the renovation is reason enough to celebrate, come December parishioners will have an added reason for jubilation. When the ice storm hit Toronto last year, it plunged St. John’s York Mills Anglican into the dark

from Dec. 22 to Jan. 6. With no lights and no water, the difficult decision was made to cancel Christmas service. “It was the first Christmas in 200 years that was cancelled,” said a guilty-sounding MacDonald. “We turned to other Anglican churches (for services). I think this year will be our big, special time at Christmas.”

Networking helps homeless pets find new families Wishing our readers a warm and wonderful holiday season with many thanks for adopting, sharing and spreading the word about homeless pets in need. I know many of you see this column online at www. northyorkmirror.com and have shared the link with family, co-workers and friends in an effort to help find homes for the pets featured each month; please know your networking and outreach has really helped. This month you will be introduced to two pets that have been waiting far too long for a forever home. Handsome Charlie is two-year-old neutered male shepherd mix who has been waiting at the shelter since August. It is hard to believe this delightful boy has been passed by all these months, but it sure would be nice to see him “home for the

lorraine houston critter chatter holidays.” Charlie loves people, gets along with other dogs and loves going for walks. In fact, he’s a shelter favourite among the volunteer dog walkers. He’s a clever lad and already seems to know sit, down and shake a paw and he’s a sponge for learning if you have a tasty treat. Charlie would excel at dog sports; he’s healthy and athletic and can jump about three feet in the air from a standing position. He’s approximately 40 pounds, has been examined by the veterinarian, had all his vaccines and is microchipped. If you are interested in giving this great dog a home,

contact Toronto Animal Services West Region at 416-338-6271, visit him online at www.toronto.ca/ animalservices or see him in person at 146 The East Mall during visiting hours. His ID number is A686513. Gorgeous Iman, an eight-year-old spayed shorthaired cat, is a classic in her little black dress. She is very gentle and sweet, and enjoys pets and love from her visitors. As a bonus, Iman lived with another cat and a dog in her previous home so she will likely be comfortable in a home with other pets. Iman has been looking for a new home since her admission date of June 17. If you are interested in offering Iman a home contact the Toronto Humane Society at 416-392-2273, see her at www.torontohumanesociety.com or visit

city news

Tory identifies priorities now that he’s in office DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

w

Just over a month ago, John Tory was elected mayor of Toronto, and just days ago, he took an oath to become amalgamated Toronto’s fourth mayor. In the weeks following the election, Metroland Media Toronto compiled a survey, of a year’s worth of promises, debate and revelation from the marathon mayor’s race and presented them along with a promise that we would hold the new mayor to both commitments he made, and needs he acknowledged. Over the next four years, we’ll be talking with Tory and others from time to time, to see how he’s doing, in four broad areas: Leadership (On repairing a council – and city – divided); Diversity (On building a city ‘where no one is left behind’); Inter-governmental Relations (chief salesperson, head shamer); Transportation: (On becoming unstuck). On Monday, hours after Tory took his oath of office, the mayor sat down with reporters David Nickle and Mike Adler, for the first of those conversations.

Tory made his first step toward repairing the fractured politics on the floor of Toronto Council by selecting his executive committee and recommending key posts. He has taken criticism already from the left on council for creating an inner circle that lists heavily toward the right and the suburbs, with prominent right-of-centre councillors holding the majority of positions on the executive committee and left-wing councillors left on the outside. Tory disputed that take on his move. “I took people like Ana Bailão and Mary-Margaret McMahon. They’re both from downtown Toronto and they are both seen as opposed to being on the centre-right – the centre left if you look at their voting

leadership: On Repairing A Council –and City –divided

On Building a City Where No One is Left Behind wDiversity: It is early days, and Tory hasn’t had the opportunity to turn his mind to the issues that were raised during debates by newcomer entrepreneurs who said they felt shut out from the city’s procurement policies. Tory said he would rely on city

records. If you look at who I nominated to be deputy speaker (Don Valley East Councillor Shelley Carroll) she certainly isn’t on the right,” he said. “If we look at my nominations – Pam McConnell being nominated as a deputy mayor – in that little group I’m going to meet with. I view it all as very important,” he said. Tory said he will be running an inclusive administration, irrespective of who sits on his executive, which he points out has only 12 spaces for a 44-member council. And he said that he would take a ‘healing’ approach to bringing the city together. “This is not a marriage broker and not a divorce lawyer – this is a marriage councillor,” said Tory. “If you asked me how could you reduce the feeling of isolation people might have, well, get results on things bothering people in those areas helps a lot.” staff to help rectify that. “The best way to get for example minority-led businesses involved in procurement is you indicate to the staff that it’s a priority,” said Tory. “But I think it’s a more complicated process than to sit here and give some glib answer. In competition for jobs, you make sure people who have given characteristics haven’t been short-changed.”

Relations wInter-governmental

On becoming unstuck wTransportation:

As Tory himself pointed out, his first act as Mayor of Toronto was to visit Queen’s Park and sit down with Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. Tory said in the interview that he intends to meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper before the end of the year. For now, Tory is characterizing both relationships as cordial – and while it may come time to “shame” other levels of government into making good on funding for transit and housing infrastructure, the time is not now. He said the meeting with Wynne led to some agreement on principle, but no promises. “Did we move the yardsticks of her saying she’ll give me a cheque for X amount of money? No. Did we have a discussion where she sees it as something we have to do with no threats of shaming necessary? Yes. For our first meeting I was thrilled we were able to immediately have discussions about things we will do.”

Early after the election, Tory made it clear he intends to deliver tangible results on relieving gridlock in the early weeks of 2015. In the interview, he had no further details to offer on that other than “stay tuned” for an announcement very soon. He did talk about his other plans, to get moving quickly on his ambitious promise to have his SmartTrack surface rail transit line up and running seven years from now. Tory said he will likely be asking for preliminary reports on the plan before the holiday break. “If you want to stick to the sevenyear timetable you have to get preliminary work done — things where you have to have the facts,” he said. “The province and we agreed this morning you have to have a common understanding. They’ve identified the two sets of officials who need to work on it… then we can move it forward.”

Is this the return of the Red Tory? We are at a peculiar moment in history, and we should all take a moment to savour it. For the first time this century, and in this province, the Red Tories are in power. It’s been a long time; properly, the until-now extinct breed of Progressive Conservative government last saw power in 1985, when former premier Bill Davis left Queen’s Park and eventually Mike Harris’ hard-right Tories changed the conversation on the right, seemingly for good. Well, that’s all changed. On Tuesday afternoon at City Hall, John Tory made it clear that the Red Tories are back, and will be running things in Toronto for the next four years. Just to make it clear, he brought along his old friend and one-time boss Bill Davis – still demonstrably capable of delivering the kind of blistering charm offensive that kept Ontario in the hands of the Tories for four decades last century. Davis and his predecessors maintained power by carefully balancing the needs of a post-war Ontario with its

david nickle the city limitations, running as perfectly as they might up the middle of the political road: socially progressive and fiscally conservative. Also, as Davis put it afterwards to reporters, it doesn’t hurt to be a bit “bland.” Tory went to some lengths to make it clear he’s taking more than a page from Davis’ playbook. In a lengthy inaugural address, Tory made brief mention of the need to find efficiencies in the budget and spent a lot of time speaking passionately about the need to mitigate the poisonous effects of income inequality, racial divisions and other ills that have divided the city. “None of us can be satisfied with the snapshot that has emerged in recent years, of a city unfairly and unjustly divided by income, class and geography. None of us can rest easy knowing that 150,000 Toronto kids are growing up in poverty, or that 15 neighbourhoods have poverty rates

of 40 per cent or more,” Tory said. Listening to Tory speak, after hearing from anti-violence advocate Louise Russo talk from her wheelchair, about the importance of bringing council together, it was impossible not to contrast the event with former mayor Rob Ford’s inaugural, where he snickered while Don Cherry told “pinkos” on council how they’d better watch out because there was a new guy in town. The new guy this time went out of his way to avoid such provocations, even as he laid out some challenges, to work together to deal with Toronto’s problems in a clear-headed and non-ideological way. It remains to be seen whether this old-fashioned approach to politics will yield anything other than more of the same. But it’s an optimistic note on which to begin things. After all we’ve been through, a little Red Tory blandness is more than a little tempting.

group airs concerns about air rail link

A coalition of airport workers and transit advocates will meet today with a highranking Metrolinx official to discuss concerns for the Union Pearson Express (UPX) air rail link. UPX president Kathy Haley has agreed to sit down with representatives from the coalition, which includes the Toronto Airport Council of Unions, the Clean Train Coalition and TTCriders, a spokesperson for the group confirmed late last week. In addition to demanding fares comparable with the TTC for the service, the coalition wants to see UPX electrified and expanded beyond its initial four-stop route. It’s scheduled to launch in the spring. #grumpyrider campaign wAnnouncing TTCriders has launched its latest social media campaign, calling on fed-up transit users to post grumpy “selfies” in reaction to the latest delay in service. “Next time you’re feeling

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT grumpy on the TTC snap and send a #grumpyrider selfie to us and our elected officials at City Hall and Queen’s Park,” says the group in a press release. “Our elected officials need to understand the collective frustration Toronto’s 1.7 million riders feel when we face overcrowding, delays, breakdowns, long wait times and more on the TTC.” For campaign details, check out TTCriders.ca marches on in more TTC stations wWiFi

Another four transit stations have wireless internet, the TTC announced last week. Dundas, Queen, King and Union stations are now part of the burgeoning TConnect network, which is accessible from subway platforms for free after viewing an advertisement. The stations join BloorYonge, St. George, Bay, Wellesley and College, with

more downtown stations scheduled to go online before the 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. WiFi provider BAI Canada has pledged to have the entire TTC subway network hooked up with the service by 2017. on new TTC streetcars wPresto

Presto is now available on new TTC streetcars. The preloaded fare card allows riders to pay by “tapping on” at speciallydesigned access portals. It launched on two of the TTC’s sleek new streetcars last Sunday, the only vehicles operated by the transit commission to offer the service. A third TTC streetcar, which recently began running on the 510 Spadina tracks, will also offer Presto in the near future, although it will still be several more years before Presto is fully available on all TTC vehicles.
