Canada Lands Company is holding a public information meeting about Downsview Park Thursday night. Canada Lands is the Crown corporation abruptly put in charge of the park by the federal government a year ago, a move that left the community wondering what that means for the future of the park. The Dec. 5 meeting will focus on how Canada Lands operates and the business activities taking place at the park. There will also be a discussion about a consultation process Canada Lands will launch in 2014 about the future of the park. The meeting comes days after Urbancorp and Mattamy Homes announced on Nov. 27 their joint-venture partnership to build the Downsview Park community. The project is a “63-acre master-planned community” made up of 487 townhouses, 29 single-family homes and about 550 mid-rise apartment units. The meeting will be held at the Warehouse Event Venue at 2-35 Carl Hall Rd. at the park at Sheppard Avenue and Keele Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and presentations begin at 7 p.m.

Amatore De Sario basks in the holiday glow of his Benjamin Boake Trail home on Tuesday night. The annual Christmas light display helps raise funds for The Hospital for Sick Children.
Dreaming of a bright Christmas FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com If Pat and Amatore De Sario didn’t put up the popular Christmas display people take special trips out to see, something would feel like it’s
missing. Now in its 14th year, the impressive display on Benjamin Boake Trail is made up of thousands of bright lights and inflatable decorations, which serves as a fundraiser for The Hospital for Sick Children. The De Sarios
spent time at the downtown hospital after their daughter was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes years ago, and this is their way of giving back. A collection box is situated out front, along with a book for visitors to sign.
To date, about $105,000 has been raised for the hospital, with $14,500 collected last year, Pat said. With a few odds and ends to tend to, the display officially lit up Sunday at 5:30 p.m., and >>>house, page 12

Baycrest glee club strikes right note Geared to seniors with cognitive concerns LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Gathered in the Wintergarden atrium of Baycrest’s Apotex Centre Jewish Home for the Aged, Buddy’s Glee Club kicked off its concert with a rousing rendition of the song Getting to Know You. They then moved on to a long list of golden oldies, from Who Could Ask for Anything More, Oh What a Beautiful Morning and Hava Nagila to the Anniversary Song, Side by Side and This Land is Your Land before wrapping up with Hanukkah songs. Many in the audience sang and clapped along during last week’s concert. The choir was actually two Buddy’s Glee Clubs joined together, both made up of Baycrest clients with cognitive impairments. One of the choirs also included family members or caregivers. They are both part of groundbreaking research at Baycrest looking at the benefits of singing on health and wellbeing in seniors who

have cognitive problems such as dementia. One study is investigating not only the benefits of singing, but of singing with a loved one, said music therapist Chrissy Pearson, who directed the choir. “Every single week, we see people come in asleep or sleepy and as the music starts and toward the end (of the practice), they’re always awake, smiling and engaged, active and participating,” she said. “I can’t think of one ses-
sion where that wasn’t the case. I haven’t had a session where someone slept through the entire session. Music is a wonderful way to catch attention and keep them engaged. We also see people becoming more expressive. Flat faces become smiling faces or laughing faces.” Those advantages often last hours after choir practice has ended, Pearson said. The benefits may be even greater for the seniors joined by loved ones. “We also see great inter-
action between the family members and the residents. So, they chat between songs about memories or share a hug or read the lyrics and find their place,” Pearson said. “They can’t remember where they are or who their daughter is sitting next to them, but they know all the words to the songs and they can sing the words without any confusion or any wondering what they are doing. You can see it’s clear in their mind, ‘This is the song and
I’m singing,’ and that creates the connection between mother and daughter. She may not remember the daughter’s name but she is singing to her and smiling to her and showing that connection.” Monty Mazin, who had the audience clapping along as he sang a solo version of Grey Skies, joined the glee club with his wife, Blema, who has dementia. “Blema has a background in music. From the age of eight, she was a child prodigy on the piano. Her shortterm memory is gone but she retained her music and it’s just a joy for me for her to have her in the choir and remembering the tunes and singing,” he said. “Throughout life, I’ve loved music. It’s important to cheer people up, no matter how bad conditions may be.” Rebecca Hoch, 102 and a resident of Baycrest’s longterm care home, enjoys being in the choir, especially for the camaraderie, although she acknowledged her singing voice isn’t what it once was. “Meeting with all the people together, we are all friendly with one another and that is what you need when you are older,” she said. “We’re all a team.”

Changes proposed for Sheppard Centre site LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Residents will be able learn more about a proposed 39-storey condo building on the site of the Sheppard Centre at the northeast corner of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue at a future community meeting.
While a date for the meeting has not yet been set, a planning report to the Nov. 19 meeting of North York Community Council said the development would take up the block bounded by Yonge, Sheppard, Greenfield Avenue and Doris Avenue. It would include the 343unit condo building fronting

Greenfield and a 29-storey rental apartment building at 2 Forest Laneway, the report said. The development would also feature additional retail uses with improved connections to Yonge and Sheppard, a daycare centre and the demolition of 25 rental units to be replaced by a new eight-

Support city’s youth through grant applications
Write us
I
t may be an obvious point to say our children are our future, but it’s one that bears repeating so that we do what’s necessary to ensure the youth of today are prepared for tomorrow’s challenges. Just this week, two opportunities came to light for organizations and businesses to play an influential role in the lives of our city’s youth. In helping remove obstacles to success, and providing critical work experience, we can create positive connections to a city they may one day help define. Though it’s December, it’s already time to think about summer job opportunities. Giving a student a summer job is a great way to get them on the road to one day contributing to our city’s economic growth and stability. They need a solid foundation of work experience to build upon. Local our view companies that want to open that door for them can do so with the Opportunities help of a Canada Summer Jobs grant – but they need to apply abound with now. The federal government makes programs it easy to create new positions for summer students, with non-profit organizations eligible for up to 100 per cent coverage of the minimum hourly wage and private companies eligible for up to 50 per cent of the same wage. Be the difference in a student’s life that gets them closer to achieving their full potential. It’s an unforgiving job market, so any work experience and mentoring opportunities your company can offer may be the one thing that secures them gainful employment after they have finished their education. The Ontario Trillium Foundation also recently announced a $5-million per year grants program to give community organizations the power to improve outcomes for youth facing multiple barriers to economic and social well-being. Called the Youth Opportunities Fund, it will provide grants to grassroots, youth-led and community-based organizations to create programs that will engage and benefit young people aged 12 to 25 who are marginalized, who are atrisk or in trouble with the law, have experience in child welfare services, come from a low-income situation, and/or have dropped out of school. Equal opportunity, regardless of background or socio-economic circumstance, is the least our city’s youth deserve. The application deadline for both programs is in January. TV networks get in the holiday spirit

Following closely on their heels were the networks with their annual array of celebrity Christmas TV specials that began airing in earnest this week. arkell Bradley has learned to do things differently since she was diagnosed with a rare, progressive and fatal lung disease three years ago. Something as simple as walking can leave the 67-year-old Bathurst Street and Drewry Avenue resident breathless. And if she does venture out for a stroll, Bradley must be familiar with the area and know where she can sit down if needed. Perhaps most heartbreaking is not being able to play frisbee or hide and go seek with her six-yearold grandson, who loves to run around. Bradley suffers from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a disease that scars the lungs, killing nearly 5,000 Canadians a year, including her brother three years ago at age 68. According to the Canadian Lung Association, the scars in the lungs cause the lungs to become stiff, making it hard to breathe. Over time, the scarring becomes so thick the lungs can’t take in oxygen. There are many different kinds of interstitial lung disease, or pulmonary fibrosis. When a cause of pulmonary fibrosis can not be found, the disease is called idiopathic (of unknown cause) pulmonary fibrosis. The cause of IPF is not completely understood. No one knows what causes it or why some people get it. But the disease is linked to a number of risk factors, including genetics, tobacco smoking, acid reflux, and viral or bacterial lung infection. It tends to affect people aged 50 to

was released in January. But there’s one potentially deadly problem: the Canadian Drug Expert Committee (CDEC) has recommended Esbriet not be covered under provincial drug plans. Despite funding for Esbriet in 10 other countries, the committee found the drug held “uncertain clinical benefit” and failed to provide significant improvement to patient conditions or life expectancy. Without coverage, the drug costs $115 a day, or close to $42,000 annually, a price Bradley can’t afford.

where we would initiate (drug) treatment,” she said. “We are hopeful treating it early on will prevent mortality.” Robert Davidson, president and founder of the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (CPFF), said he’s disappointed Esbriet is not covered in Canada. “We have lost too many too soon to this dreadful disease to give up our fight, and continue to be hopeful that the (Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care) will do the right thing,” he said in a release. “Currently, this is the only treatment available for Canadians with mild to moderate forms of IPF and it’s disheartening that those individuals who need it the most, still can’t access it. We are urging the ministry to reconsider its position and help those who suffer from this terrible and deadly disease.” An email sent from the office of Deb Matthews, minister of health and long-term care, said the drug’s manufacturer has been made aware of the ministry’s final decision and the concerns raised by the review committees. “A final decision on whether to fund this drug publicly in Ontario cannot be made until the manufacturer provides more information to these advisory committees. As always, the ministry will happily review any new information and evidence for this drug that manufacturer brings forward,” the email said. Esbriet is currently covered in almost a dozen countries, including France, Japan, Italy and Spain.

Ford’s ‘outsider’ game getting old

On Tuesday morning, Mayor Rob Ford arrived – late – for the kickoff of the Mayor’s Annual Christmas Toy Drive. It was OK, though; the only people kept waiting were a few television cameras and reporters, some city staff and the city manager. In other years, there were children at the launch, and the mayor would crouch down and chat with them as they played with toys. This time, a city spokesperson said protocol staff made the call to not have children because of “scheduling” issues – it was awfully close to lunchtime – and because of the crush of cameras. About an hour later, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly emerged from a meeting with Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, where they spoke about matters of transit and housing and other topics of mutual interest. Ford was not invited, an omission which Wynne explained succinctly: “I’m meeting with the deputy mayor because tunnels reach Vaughan wSubway

A subway extension under construction in the north part of the city celebrated an important milestone this week. The excavation of twin tunnels for the Toronto York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) is now complete, with the arrival of tunnel boring machine “Torkie” at the extension’s terminus in Vaughan. Along with “Holey”, “Moley” and “Yorkie” the machines have bored 6.4 kilometres of subway tunnels dating back to 2011. The $2.4-billion, six-stop extension of the Spadina line is set for completion in autumn of 2016. Pearson rail electrification study wUnion

But it is in real terms a vote of non-confidence, as councillors have taken back all the powers that were theirs to give. The mayor and his brother do not appear keen to regain that confidence. Doug Ford spent the first part of the week in budget committee continuing to embellish last week’s allegation that city staff has conspired with a rogue council to primp up the 2014 budget with wasteful spending and unnecessary

Add the City Youth Council of Toronto to groups looking to rename the proposed subway project commonly referred to as the Downtown Relief Line. tax increases. As for the mayor – in addition to showing up late to one of the few events within his more limited purview, he’s so far snubbed any attempts by Kelly to discuss the way forward. Immediately following the non-confidence vote, this strategy might have seemed a winning one. Ford won in 2010 as council’s ultimate outsider, so now that he’s been thrown out, why not play the outsider again? It’s starting to become clear that that game is already a little old. There is a fine line between an outsider and a truant, a critic and a vandal, an aggrieved suburban hero and a child in a tantrum. The Fords are crossing that line; while council, for the first time in three years really, has freed itself to behave like the mature level of government Torontonians might at one time have expected.

Union Pearson Express Electrification Environmental Assessment Transit Project Assessment Study and Class Environmental Assessment Study
NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT Metrolinx is proposing to electrify the Union Pearson (UP) Express route beginning at the future UP Express Union Station in the City of Toronto and terminating at the future UP Express Pearson Station (Terminal 1, Toronto Pearson International Airport) in the City of Mississauga. The project involves the electrification of approximately 25 kilometres of track along the Union Station GO Rail Corridor and Kitchener GO Rail Corridor to Highway 427, where the route then follows the new UP Express spur line (under construction) into Toronto Pearson (see map below). The purpose of the project is to convert the UP Express route from diesel to electric power. Electrification of the UP Express is part of The Big Move, Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan which will dramatically improve how people move in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas. Funding for the electrification is dependent on the Metrolinx Investment Strategy. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT (EA) PROCESS Metrolinx and Hydro One are carrying out a parallel EA process to satisfy both Metrolinx’s requirements under the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) and Hydro One’s requirements under the Class EA for Minor Transmission Facilities (Class EA). The parallel EA process involves both EAs being completed simultaneously. The Environmental Project/ Study Report will be made available for public review and comment. THE PROJECT Electrification of the UP Express route will be achieved through a Traction Electrification System which will provide electricity to the trains by means of a Traction Power Distribution System (Metrolinx) and Traction Power Supply System (Hydro One). TRACTION POWER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM The proposed Traction Power Distribution System is an Overhead Contact System (OCS) comprised of a wiring system providing power to the trains. The wiring system will be suspended from a number of OCS structures (i.e. portals, cantilevers) placed along and over the track. The Traction Power Distribution System also includes two Paralleling Stations (PS) to boost the voltage along the UP Express route, as well as gantries which provide power to the OCS, and are located in the vicinity of each PS. A new electrified maintenance facility will need to be built to carry out maintenance on the new electric trains. The environmental impact of the Traction Power Distribution System components and electrified maintenance facility is being assessed under the Transit Project Assessment Process, in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 – Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings.
TRACTION POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM Electrification of the UP Express requires a connection to Ontario’s electrical system. It is proposed that the power be supplied from the existing 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission line that runs between Hydro One’s Claireville Transformer Station (located near Highway 407 and Highway 27 in the City of Vaughan) and Richview Transformer Station (located near Highway 401 and Highway 27 in the City of Toronto). Cables will deliver power to a new 230 kV Traction Power Substation (TPS). The TPS will convert the voltage from 230 kV, to 25 kV so that it can be used to power the electric trains. The Traction Power Supply system is subject to provincial Environmental Assessment Act approval in accordance with the Class EA for Minor Transmission Facilities. CONSULTATION Members of the public, agencies and other interested parties are encouraged to participate in the EA process by attending consultation opportunities or contacting the project team directly with information, comments or questions. Consultation opportunities are planned and will be advertised on the project websites, in local newspapers and via direct mail. A second round of joint Public Open Houses are planned for winter 2014 to present and seek feedback on both the TPAP (Metrolinx) and Class EA (Hydro One) project components. Consultation with the public, review agencies and First Nations and Métis communities is a key component to the UP Express Electrification EA. If you would like to submit a comment or question, or receive additional information related to the UP Express Electrification Project, please send an email to the project team at: electrification@metrolinx.com or contact: Karen Pitre Executive Director, Electrification Metrolinx-GO Transit 20 Bay Street, Suite 600 Toronto, ON M5J 2W3 tel: 416-874-5910 e-mail: electrification@metrolinx.com www.gotransit.com/electrification

House gets all decked out for Christmas >>>from page 1 will shut off Jan. 6. The De Sarios start the painstaking task of getting the spectacle ready at Thanksgiving, and put in about 150 hours to make sure it’s just right, Pat said. Decorations are a mix of new and old, but the arrangement always changes to give onlookers something different to see each year, she said. New additions this year include an eight-foot snowman, a tree with Santa, and Santa sitting in a chair with a book. The roof will also have a blue section. “It looks quite nice this year,” Pat said. “There is no more room to put anything.” Along with shopping locally for additions, the De Sarios also make a trip to Niagara Falls to scope out the selection there, she said. “We do look forward to doing it,” Pat said of the display. “If we didn’t do it, we would feel in our heart we were missing something.” Sometimes the comments people write in the book the De Sarios place outside bring tears, as many take the opportunity to share their connection to The Hospital for Sick Children, she said. “People say it’s a tradition to come see the lights and how they look forward to coming,” Pat said. “Others share stories of their kids being at Sick Kids, and say thank you for doing this.”

Holiday Headquarters
holiday parties
Parties are an integral part of the holiday season, when friends and family gather to celebrate and give thanks. For holiday hosts, parties are a great opportunity to make the season even more festive with an event that guests won’t soon forget. The following are just a few themes to make your holiday party as memorable as it is merry. • Ugly Christmas Sweater Party: Christmas sweater
parties have grown in popularity over the last decade, when revelers have tried to outdo one another with the most outrageous holiday-themed sweater. Give prizes for the most outlandish sweater and let guests know early on so they hunt for a holiday sweater that’s so ugly or outrageous you can’t help but love it. • Christmas Costume Party: This holiday season,
bread cookies. • Film Festival: Holiday movies are another tradition of the season, so why not invite friends and family over for a holiday film marathon? Include classics like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Story” and encourage guests to submit their favorites. • Christmas Karaoke: For those who love to belt out their favorite holiday tunes, consider throwing a Christmas karaoke party that allows guests to perform their own renditions of their favorite Christmas carols. Purchase a home karaoke set and ask guests in advance of the party if there are any particular songs they’d like to perform. – MS

Outside-the-box
consider making your holiday bash a costume party, encouraging guests to dress up as their favorite characters from holiday tales like “Frosty the Snowman,”“A Christmas Carol” or any of the host of beloved holiday legends. • Caribbean Christmas: The weather come the holiday season may be the one thing to put a damper on the festivities. To combat blue feelings from potentially inclement weather, consider a Caribbean theme for your holiday party this season. Rather than wearing sweaters and long pants, wear beach attire and give the party a touch of the Caribbean. Outfit your home in beach decor and serve food and drinks reminiscent of the Caribbean instead of traditional holiday fare like eggnog and ginger-

Toronto Trustee Jo-Ann Davis was elected chair of Toronto’s Catholic school board last Thursday night. First elected to the Toronto Catholic District School Board in 2010, Davis is a senior associate at the consulting firm of Leman Group. She served as vicechair during the first year of her term on the board. Following her election, Davis spoke of her commitment to public engagement, working collaboratively with her trustee colleagues, and moving forward with collective confidence. “We are a great community of Catholic schools,” she said in a statement. “Our faith demands action, and our collective actions define us all.” An active community volunteer, Davis serves as president of the Toronto branch of the Canadian
International Council, a non-partisan, countrywide research council established 80 years ago to strengthen Canada’s foreign policy. Sitting beside Davis as vice-chair this term will be Scarborough Trustee Nancy Crawford, who was also first elected to the board in 2010. During her term with the board, Crawford has served as chair of the Governance Framework Committee, and also represented the board of trustees on the Nurturing Our Catholic Community, Safe Schools, and Catholic Parent Involvement Committees. re-elects chris Bolton as chair wTDSB
Trinity-Spadina Trustee Chris Bolton was re-elected as the Toronto District School Board chair (TDSB) at the annual organiza-
Canada’s top Rhythmic
tional board meeting held Monday evening. The former teacher and principal brings nearly 40 years of education experience to the role of TDSB chair. “I thank my fellow trustees for their confidence and support. While we have made great gains in ensuring continued student success and improved financial accountability, there is an opportunity to make many more,” Bolton said in a statement. “I look forward to building on the progress we’ve made over the next year.” Willowdale Trustee Mari Rutka was elected as the vice-chair. She has been involved with schools and school councils in Willowdale for about 20 years.

Pleasant pup and friendly feline seek forever homes Our latest pets hail from Toronto Animal Services North Region. You’ll meet Phoebe, a mini poodle mix who deserves to become a pampered pooch after being neglected; you’ll also be introduced to Wilma, a lovely tabby cat who enjoys a sunny spot. Phoebe is an eight-yearold spayed female miniature poodle mix who came into the shelter as a stray. She was so matted upon arrival the staff had to completely shave off all of her hair. Despite her neglected state, she is a sweet, trusting dog. Phoebe would love to get
Phoebe, far left, and Wilma are homeless pets looking for new homes.
lorraine houston critter chatter pampered at the groomers every six to eight weeks, which is what this little lady deserves. Even though she isn’t a puppy, she is still very lively and loves to play with her favourite squeaky toys. She definitely doesn’t act her age and still has a lot of life (and love) to offer. She is currently in good health but potential adopters need to be aware that as pets age (just like people) they need quality health
care. Her ID number is 664549 Wilma is a three-year-old spayed female domestic short-haired brown tabby cat who is quite the love bug. Although she can be a bit shy at first, the key to her heart has proven to be catnip and treats. She wants nothing more than to curl up in a nice
sunny spot on the couch and soak in some rays. Wilma has been health checked, is litter box trained and has her bag packed (which contains her favourite cat treats) awaiting her forever family. Her ID number is A665113 To inquire about Phoebe or Wilma contact Toronto Animal Services North

• If it’s too cold outside for you, it’s too cold for pets. Exposure to harsh conditions can cause serious harm or even death to pets who are left outside, particularly during periods of freezing rain and rapid temperature fluctuations. • Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, which is poisonous. It tastes sweet to pets so be sure to clean up spills and store it safely out
of reach. • Wipe off your dog’s feet when she returns from a walk. Ice-melting chemicals and salt can irritate and burn the pads. • In winter weather, outdoor cats often seek the warmth of a car engine. Before you start your car it is advised that you honk your horn or bang on the hood to alert a sleeping cat who may be underneath seeking refuge from the cold. Sometimes Christmas can be blue due to loneliness. Maybe you’ve just moved to town and can’t go home for the holidays; or maybe you’ve lost a loved one, even years ago. We invite you to attend our Blue Christmas Service on Wednesday, December 11th at 10:30 a.m. and join us for a delicious lunch afterwards. And of course we’d be thrilled if you joined us for worship any Sunday morning either at our Traditional Service at 9:45 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. for our Contemporary Service as Walt Hearn, our minister, brings God’s messages of hope, peace, joy and love.
