Two North York teens in running for Loran Scholars awards FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Two North York students are in the running for a $100,000 post-secondary education award.

William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute student Aditi Sriram and Emily Yin of Earl Haig Secondary School are two of 80 finalists from 4,200 applicants battling for 30 Loran Awards, which are valued at up to $100,000 over four years for undergraduate studies in Canada.

After moving on from initial interviews in the fall, Sriram and Yin are heading to the national selections Friday and Saturday in Toronto.

Founded in 1988, the Loran Scholars Foundation is a national charity that partners with 25 universities to invest in exceptional young Canadians, with award winners selected based on evidence of character, service, and leadership potential.

tuition waiver, personal mentorship, resources for summer internships, annual leadership retreats and a week-long orientation expedition in Algonquin Park.

Every finalist is eligible to receive a $3,000 finalist award if they are not selected as a Loran Scholar.

Sriram said she heard about the award at the beginning of the year and decided to apply.

“Character, leadership skills, these are things that are important to me,” the Jane Street and Finch Avenue

area resident said.

A tennis player for years, the Grade 12 student began volunteering as a coach for the Jane and Finch Community Tennis Association four years ago. She also helps run her school’s science club, started a TEDx club, plays flute in the school band, and serves as a Girl Guides youth leader.

A science lover, Sriram created a biology event in Grade 10 for visiting middle school students who were taking part in Mackenzie’s Science

Outstanding principal at Cliffwood school FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Sarah Frost said she was “blown away” when told she was one of 40 educators named in Canada’s Outstanding Principals program for 2016 by The Learning Partnership.

“I had butterflies, I was so excited,” said the principal at Cliffwood Public School near Don Mills and Steeles Avenue. “It was just an honour to have been nominated.”

Now in its 12th year, the program recognizes the unique and vital contribution of principals in publicly funded schools from every province and territory.

The winners, who were nominated by their parents, colleagues, and community members, and chosen by a national selection committee, are being celebrated for demonstrating innovation, having an entrepreneurial spirit and for employing creativity in finding solutions and opportunities.

Committee assess nominations across six categories: innovation, student achievement, leadership, professional learning, community partnerships, and personal growth,” said Akela Peoples, president and CEO of The Learning Partnership.

“Sarah was selected because, according to her nominators, she has transformed Cliffwood Public School into a more collaborative space, employing innovative initiatives and arts-based programming to

allow students to express creativity, curiosity and become excited about attending school.”

In the year-and-a-half Frost has been at Cliffwood, she has been involved with initiatives to expand learning and engage students in the form of drumming, singing, dancing, art, music clubs, eco programs, a French cafe, song making and a Mandarin club. A pilot with LEGO offering STEM is also in the planning stages.

Frost said she’s proud of the way students have embraced green initiatives, noting Cliffwood is gold certified by Ontario EcoSchools.

The junior kindergarten to Grade 6 school is looking at new ways to use the recently cleaned up courtyard, she said, adding an outdoor learning space could be an option.

“Everything we do here is about engaging the kids,” she said. “I have a wonderful team. How wonderful it is to come to school and make a difference in the lives of kids.”

An awards gala will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23 downtown.

Olympics, she said, adding she’s competed in similar events held at various universities.

After becoming a TedxYouth@ Toronto ambassador, and knowing not all her classmates could attend the conference, she decided to create a TEDx club at the school. Though she wasn’t able to pull off a conference, Sriram was undeterred and organized one for this spring.

“I didn’t give up,” she said, adding she’s hoping to get alumni and community leaders to take part.

As for the Loran Award, Sriram said she’s still absorbing the news she made it this far in the selection process.

“The fact I made nationals is a humbling feeling,” she said, adding she plans to attend the University of Western Ontario for dual studies in medical sciences and at Western’s Ivey Business School.

“Anything you consciously try to achieve, you can do it,” she said.

The Grade 12 Earl Haig student, who is part of the Claude Watson School for the Arts program, said she went into the initial interview “free, happy, and optimistic.”

“I’m really excited,” she said of the next round of interviews.

A lover of food, visual arts, and science, Yin plays the cello in a community orchestra, and is president of the school’s science club. She also creates public art installations – made of food.

“If you like what you do, you always find the time,” she said of work-life balance. “I never feel anything is a burden.”

Though she’s almost certain she’ll be attending university out of province, Yin said she hasn’t chosen a school and is deciding between focusing on engineering sciences or architecture or somehow combining both.

“The first night was hectic,” Erwin said. “It’s a good experience. It’s easy to take things for granted and not realize not everyone has access to education.”

othing makes Toronto angrier than a transit strike. Well, almost nothing: transit strikes made Torontonians angry enough that in 2011 Toronto council asked the provincial government to declare the Toronto Transit Commission an essential service – same as police and firefighters – so we would never be troubled by wholesale transit service denial again.

In response to the 2009, 40-day garbage strike, Torontonians did something that was arguably even more radical, and elected Rob Ford mayor.

The lack of garbage collection for more than a month that summer infuriated residents. Parks were filled with stinking bags of garbage that only got stinkier in the heat, and the only thing worse than hauling garbage there was keepour view ing it festering in the yard.

Toronto may well be heading for another garbage strike in just Less impactful a few weeks. But the city’s strategy job action if in dealing with its two unions has that eventuality less likely. unions strike made It was a strategy developed under former deputy mayor Doug Holyday during Rob Ford’s otherwise tumultuous term of office. Rather than let negotiations poke along until the warm weather, Holyday and the city’s negotiating team set the strike deadline clock ticking in December and pushed hard until the end. The result? No strike, but a negotiated settlement. The only workers who walked off the job were from the library, and that strike was over in the blink of an eye.

Will it be the same in 2016? In some ways, the city is in an even stronger position this time than last because, since then, Toronto successfully expanded its contracted out garbage collection to about half the city. So if garbage workers do walk off the job, only Torontonians east of Yonge Street will be impacted. And unless the last half of the winter is truly balmy, the smell won’t be that bad either.

That’s a real incentive to CUPE Local 416 and Local 79 to make a deal, and probably offer up concessions to the city negotiators, to avoid a long and possibly not impactful job action. With all that said, the city could well be shut down later in the winter, with not just outside garbage collectors, but also unionized inside workers. And even without the stink... that eventuality will make everybody more than a little twitchy. Let’s hope that nobody does anything rash.

Toronto’s half-imagined transit future is not all bad Whatever you may think of the details, you’ve got to hand it to Toronto’s planning department and chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat for this achievement: the most completely imagined transit plan in recent memory.

There was one other: the OneCity Plan that former TTC chair Karen Stintz stitched together with the help of Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker that, in 2013, simply stitched together every dream project that caught their attention and put it on a map.

But that one, delivered to council in 2013, could barely stand up to a stiff breeze.

The plan that Keesmaat has put together and is completing is made of sterner stuff. The plan to make a one-stop subway crossing the gulf between Kennedy station and the Scarborough Town Centre is justified using economic development metrics rather than on a measure of local transit. The extended

david nickle the city Eglinton RT deals with the local transit needs along with a multi-station SmartTrack line running parallel. There will be more light rail in the west end, planners decreed, having looked with some rigour at Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack plan through Etobicoke and pronounced heavy rail there to be impractical. The light rail would provide more stops and therefore more localized service as it makes its way to Mississauga and the airport. As was reported last week, meanwhile, a downtown relief line coursing south from Pape station at Danforth and along Queen Street East past Toronto City Hall would deal handily with the growing congestion at the Bloor/ Yonge subway interchange.

The detailed justification of that plan will have to

wait until Toronto planners actually release the leaked report later in the spring, but the plan has a sense to it: Queen Street is already a busy streetcar route and Nathan Phillips Square is a focal point for the city.

So: a downtown relief line, a SmartTrack only slightly truncated, more light rail and a nominal subway in Scarborough.

If all that could somehow be built, to the specifications of the planners...well, Toronto would be in pretty fine shape.

That might be a trick.

There are engineering problems to overcome, financial hurdles to beat and the raw uncertainty of fickle Toronto politics.

Odds are good that some or all of this well-imagined future will not manifest.

More likely, it will be some of it. Two elements of this plan are particularly vulnerable: the one-stop subway to the Scarborough Town Centre and SmartTrack itself. In the

case of the former, the costs remain high to send trains to service a single stop. In the case of the latter, the realities of geography and engineering may make it cost prohibitive. It might be useful to imagine, then, a scenario in which those two elements are absent.

In the case of SmartTrack’s imagined demise, it might not be as bad as that: Metrolinx is still planning to expand GO Train service along that route. And if the subway vanishes – well, there are light rail plans on the book for linking the Scarborough Town Centre and Kennedy station. In the meantime, the plan would still encompass massive light rail expansion and a downtown relief line that would improve transit for everyone. As half-imagined futures go, it’s still not a bad one.

Transit Project Assessment Process GO Rail Network Electrification – Public Meetings Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is helping to transform the way the region moves by building a seamless, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

As part of this project, we are expanding GO Transit to enable 15-minute service on most corridors with electrified trains, which will enable faster and more frequent service. Together, these infrastructure improvements will change how people move around Toronto and the region with four times the current number of GO train trips, service on evenings and weekends, and twice the number of trips during peak periods.

Building on the GO Electrification Study completed in 2010, which looked at the electrification of the GO Transit rail system network, Metrolinx is currently undertaking environmental studies under the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08, to examine the conversion of several rail corridors from a diesel to an electric-based system. The project will include design and implementation of a traction power supply system (i.e. traction power substations and high voltage connections to Hydro One’s existing grid), as well as power distribution components (i.e. electrical power distribution facilities) located in the vicinity of the rail corridors.

The Study Area (see map) includes six GO rail corridors, including potential locations for the electrical power supply and distribution facilities: • Union Station Rail Corridor • Lakeshore West Corridor – Strachan Avenue to Burlington • Kitchener Corridor – UP Express Spur (at Highway 427) to Bramalea • Lakeshore East Corridor – Don River to Oshawa GO Station • Barrie Corridor – Parkdale Junction to Allandale GO Station • Stouffville Corridor – Scarborough Junction to Lincolnville GO Station A series of public meetings are being held as part of the TPAP process to provide information about the scope of the project, environmental studies, design and engineering components, preliminary locations for traction power supply/distribution facilities, project timelines and next steps. Former North York high schooler looking for Olympic encore NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto Gavin Smellie is hoping for a trip to the Rio Olympics as part of a resurgent men’s Canadian sprint team.

“We’re going (to Rio) to get gold,” he said in a recent interview.

Certainly, Smellie, 29, and his teammates were agonizingly close to the podium at the 2012 London Olympics.

For a moment, postrace, they were listed as the bronze medal winners, only to then be disqualified on a lane-violation ruling.

The Canadian sprint team was able to get considerable consolation the following year in Moscow at the 2013 world track and field championships when a disqualification by another team pushed Canada up onto the podium for the bronze medal.

It was especially sweet for Smellie and fellow Toronto sprinter Justyn Warner, the two holdovers from the London Olympic team.

Since then, the Canadian team has followed a similar roller coaster pattern, disqualified in the finals at both the 2014 Commonwealth and 2015 Pan Am Games, a lackluster sixth-place finish at the 2015 spring World Relay Championships (with Smellie in the lineup) but back on the podium in late August, to close out the season, at the 2015 world championships for a bronze medal (without Smellie in the lineup).

“Now he’s here and he’s looking forward to having a great schedule for us, just to build that chemistry again and everything will flow well for sure.”

Although now living in Markham, Smellie grew up in Toronto on Armel Court (at Albion Road) and attended North York high schools.

Soccer was his prime sport growing up, but in high school when he switched from George Harvey Collegiate to Dante Alighieri Academy he was devastated he would have to sit out a year of soccer because of transfer rules.

He started playing other sports: “I turned out to be a pretty good volleyball player,” he said with a chuckle. He said he also tried basketball, badminton “and also track and field was the last one.”

“I went to the first race, I won it.”

On his first trip to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) in 2004 he almost made the podium – finishing fifth in the 100m.

The following year, he finished second in the 200m and third in the 100m.

North York celebrates Black History Month Toronto is celebrating Black History Month in February with a slew of events across the city, including several in North York.

TUBE: The Toronto Urban Book Expo will take place Saturday, Feb. 13 at North York Central Library, 5120 Yonge St., from noon to 2:30 p.m.

The event will feature the Canadian urban fiction scene, and the chance to meet authors and publishers and to purchase their work.

Toronto Public Library is hosting the Eh Author Series throughout the month for the chance to meet Canadian writers who have written on black history and diversity.

Writer Pamela Mordecai will take part in the series Thursday, Feb. 18 at Victoria Village branch, 184 Sloane Ave., from 7 to 8 p.m. A book signing will follow.

Shortlisted for the 2015 Roger Writers’ Trust Fiction

Prize, Mordecai’s book Red Jacket is a tale surrounding the mysterious truth of Grace Carpenter’s true identity.

A black history celebration will be held Thursday, Feb. 25 at Lawrence Heights Community Centre, 5 Replin Rd., from 5 to 7 p.m.

The night will be made up of children and youth performances in poetry reading, singing, dancing and drama.

According to the City of Toronto, Black History Month began in the United States as Negro History Week in February 1926, through the work of African American scholar Dr. Carter G. Woodson.

His aim was to raise awareness and understanding in the school curriculum of the African experience around the world. The United States began to formally celebrate

Black History Month in the 1960s. Through community activities, organizers sought to present a more balanced and accurate picture of black history.

In the 1950s, community organizations such as the Canadian Negro Women’s Association began to celebrate the importance of the history of the black community in Toronto. In 1979, Toronto became the first municipality in Canada to proclaim Black History Month through efforts of many individuals and organizations such as the Ontario Black History Society.

In 1995, former EtobicokeLakeshore MP Jean Augustine introduced a motion that was passed unanimously by the House of Commons to recognize Black History Month across Canada.

TTC gets $50 million to improve service It’s not new money, but the TTC will receive $50 million from the city this year toward improving transit service.

Alongside TTC chair Josh Colle, Mayor John Tory announced this week the extra funding, which is part of a commitment of $95 million made to the transit commission in 2015. For this year’s budget, the TTC has had to trim $5 million from its operating expenses and suspend planned service expansions such as the Cherry Street streetcar.

Tory also promised to cut subway delays by half within three years. Last year, according to the TTC, delays across the network were down 13 per cent because of additional service, while customer satisfaction was at a historic high of 81 per cent.

Talk about bad timing: on the very morning GO Transit fares increased, the agency reported mass delays

transit, particularly in lowincome neighbourhoods. For the report, the authors spoke with transit riders, planners and writers – I was also interviewed – in determining recommendations for agencies like Metrolinx to address the ongoing concern of improving transit equity.

The report is expected to be released this week.

A GO fare increase – this year’s went into effect Monday, Feb. 1 – has become an annual phenomenon for users of the regional service, a necessary cost, says Metrolinx, for improving bus and train operations. But that didn’t stop many on social media from using pithy hashtags and sharing screenshots of delayed GO schedules to vent their frustrations.

Death leads to charges A 53-year-old Toronto woman has been charged with impaired driving causing death after a single-vehicle crash in North York early Sunday left a man dead.

Police said a Nissan Pathfinder was heading north on Derrydown Road at Killamarsh Road attempting to negotiate a curve when the vehicle left the road, mounted a curb, and smashed into a tree around 2:30 a.m.

A 46-year-old male passenger in the back seat was pronounced dead in hospital.

Through neighbour Helena Cheung, who translated for the Mandarinspeaking Zhao, the retired doctor said he decided to create the sculpture because “he was bored and had nothing to do,” he said.

Zhao, who doesn’t have

formal art training, said he used his imagination to make the piece, which had several cars slow to take a closer look when The Mirror visited.

“People like to take pictures,” he said through Cheung, adding he created similar pieces in 2013 and 2014 and is mulling over making another one.

Cheung, who lives adjacent to Zhao’s semi-detached home, is impressed by the detailed sculpture.

“It’s outstanding,” she said.

Aziz, who has lived on the

street for seven years, said he doesn’t interact much with Zhao because of the language barrier, but is friendly with his children.

“It’s pretty nice art,” he said.

“It’s not something easy like anyone can do.”

Sadly, the recent warmer weather has since caused the sculpture’s demise. But with cooler temperatures expected in coming days, coupled with roughly six weeks remaining of winter, perhaps Zhao will be back at his snow art.

United Way fundraising campaign tops $100M The United Way Toronto and York Region celebrated the collection of more than $100 million for its 2015 fundraising campaign at a special event Wednesday, Jan. 27, night in downtown Toronto.

More than 1,500 supporters joined United Way President and CEO Su s a n Mc Is a a c and United Way’s 2015 Campaign Chair, Mark Wiseman, President and Chief Executive Officer, CPP Investment Board, to celebrate the raising of $100,250,000 for the Toronto and York Region

communities. The celebration took place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

“What an incredible moment for United Way Toronto and York Region and an exceptional campaign,” said Wiseman at the event.

“In September, we announced our first region-wide campaign, a commitment to raise funds for United Way programs and agencies from Toronto’s waterfront to the shores of Lake Simcoe.

And tonight, we’re proud to say we’ve surpassed our $100 million target. The hard work,

passion and persistence of everyone who helped us get here is inspiring.”

Bringing Toronto and York Region together has helped build momentum and raise more funds, the United Way said in a press release.

“Tonight goes beyond dollars raised, it’s about each and every person here,” said McIsaac. “We’re celebrating the generosity of our donors and volunteers across this city and region. It’s only because of them that we’ll continue to make real change happen for communities and improve the quality of life for our residents.”

Though symptoms of Zika virus are generally mild compared to viruses in the same family, including West Nile Virus and dengue fever, the big cause of concern is pregnant women or those who might become pregnant.

Currently there is no vaccine or treatment for Zika.

And now that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed Zika has been sexually transmitted in Texas after a person infected with the virus had recently returned from Venezuela and had sex with someone, the chances of Zika spreading to Canada through means other than mosquitoes are a definite probability, said Jianhong Wu, director of the York Institute for Health Research.

“Canada should definitely be concerned,” he said. “With pregnancy, there is very good reason to be concerned.”

Symptoms of Zika virus can include fever, headache, conjunctivitis (pink eye) and rash, along with joint and muscle pain. The illness is typically mild and lasts only a few days.

It’s believed only one in four infected persons will exhibit symptoms, with the majority asymptomatic.

Hu a i p i n g Wu , Yo r k’s professor of mathematical modelling and analysis and researcher for mosquitoborne diseases, said now that it’s been confirmed Zika can be spread through sexual transmission, it becomes more worrisome.

“This may become common for how it’s transmitted to humans, and that’s the scary part,” he said.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, Zika virus was reported for the first time last year in a number of countries in Central and South America, as well as in Mexico. Past outbreaks of Zika virus infection have been reported in Africa, Asia and the Oceanic Pacific region.

Though it’s not clear why the outbreak of the virus has been so severe this year, Wu said the increase in global temperature could be playing a role.

“With the warmer weather, mosquitoes are much more

abundant,” he said.

As for the virus affecting Canada, Wu said the country’s climate is not capable of housing the type of mosquitoes which carry Zika – but, he warned, now that it can be sexually transmitted, that changes things.

“People need to protect themselves, use condoms,” he said.

The Public Health Agency of Canada, which is not advising any travel restrictions at this time, is advising Canadian travellers visiting affected areas should wear protective clothing, apply insect repellent, and use mosquito nets over beds. The agency also recommends pregnant women and those considering becoming pregnant discuss their travel plans with their health care provider to assess their risk and consider postponing travel to areas where the Zika virus is circulating in the Americas. If travel cannot be postponed, then strict mosquito bite prevention measures should be followed to protect themselves against bites.

Canadian Blood Services has stated would-be donors who have travelled to locations outside of Canada, the continental U.S., and Europe must wait 21 days after their return home before donating blood.

Though Zika has been reported in more than two dozen countries, it hasn’t appeared to stop Canadians from travelling to affected areas, said Michael Duchesne, publisher of third-party booking site Travelzoo Canada.

“The majority of Canadians are still planning Mexico and Caribbean vacations,” he said. “The good thing is most travellers are choosing

resorts, which are equipped to deal with mosquitoes, such as having netting for beds and spraying regularly.”

It’s also best to go with a travel insurance plan with a Cancel for Any Reason option, he said.

“No one wants to lose their vacation time,” he said.

“There are still great deals to Iceland, or city vacations in New York or Chicago.”

Impacted countries According to the Pan American Health Organization, the virus has spread to at least these 26 countries to date. The WHO estimates three million to four million people across the Americas will be infected with the virus in the next year.
