Significant potential for trail growth, linkage, says cycling advocate >>>from page 1 A number of North Yorkspecific issues are expected to be discussed at the meeting, including safety concerns crossing at Hwy. 401 at Dufferin and Yonge streets, continuity issues related to the Finch hydro corridor trail, minimizing development and enhancing bike trails at Downsview Park, making the neighbourhood around Yorkdale Mall Shopping Centre more bike-friendly, including cycling infrastructure in the future redevelopment of Allen Road, encouraging more cycling on trails in the Don Mills area, building a sense of community for cyclists who live and/or ride in North York and emphasizing the need for more off-road trails.

“You get all that connected and North York would be a really great place for cycling. I’m committed to seeing that happen,” said Black, also a member of the North York Cycling and Pedestrian Committee.

“I feel North York has potential for a network of trails linked together.”

In addition, a number of general topics could

be raised at the meeting, such as challenges facing suburban cyclists, cyclist and driver education and developing strategies for local cycling advocacy.

People are also welcome to raise other cycling issues at the meeting, said Black, who lives in the area of Yonge Street and Davisville Avenue but enjoys cycling in North York.

–Michael Black Traditionally, it has been more difficult for cycling to catch on in suburbs such as North York than in the downtown area, Black said.

Even Cycle Toronto has focused its efforts downtown, he said, adding he has pushed to change that approach.

“I said to Cycle Toronto ‘You have to show more interest and devote more interest to the suburbs. It’s

just ridiculous’,” he said.

Jared Kolb, Cycle Toronto’s director of campaigns and membership, said the organization represents cycling issues across the city and is looking to gain more of a presence in suburban communities.

But he acknowledged more high-profile issues such as the Jarvis bike lanes have centred on the downtown area and the majority of the organization’s members come from downtown and midtown.

Kolb said he’s excited about the North York meeting.

Black is hoping all kinds of different cyclists, from casual riders to students to racing and road cyclists, will attend the meeting.

“We’re definitely soliciting ideas from them,” he said.

“What we want is people really eager to address (cycling issues) and fix things up and (who) want to get involved and volunteer.”

The meeting takes place Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in committee Room 3 of the North York Civic Centre at 5100 Yonge St. north of Sheppard Avenue.

Retiree rides the rails to dream job

Sunnybrook veterans well cared for, review finds

hen you retire from your dream job to the two hobbies you love most, life is good.

Just ask Ron Salisbury.

The North York resident retired Jan. 31 after working 39 years at Humber River Regional Hospital, where he started off as a cook before becoming a groundskeeper.

Now, he is turning his attention full-time to his other beloved pursuits, cooking and trains.

Salisbury, who turned 60 last month, is hoping to repeat a sixmonth gig he had last year as the paid chef and all-around host and maintenance man aboard a railway car called the Pacific used to raise $1 million for Alzheimer’s research.

People rented the railcar, which was attached to a Via or Northlander train, to travel to destinations such as Windsor, Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax and Northern Ontario.

Salisbury, a trained chef, greeted his guests with a reception complete with complimentary bar and later laid out a lunch or dinner spread that could include shrimp cocktail, grilled chicken, salmon or steak with mushroom sauce, sweet potato Parmesan mash, baby carrots, snow peas, grilled brie and strawberry sandwiches, poached apples in ice wine with ice cream and caramel sauce, and tea and coffee.

The railcar sleeps six and accommodates eight people in the dining room for a sit-down meal or up to 16 people for a buffet.

This year, Salisbury is hoping a sponsor can be found so similar trips can be made to Western Canada to continue raising money for Alzheimer’s research.

The Pacific is owned by Paul Higgins Jr. and Michael Higgins, brothers who put it back on the rails to celebrate the 100th anniversary of their company, Mother Parkers Tea and Coffee.

They inherited the railcar from their father, Paul Higgins Sr., who battled Alzheimer’s before dying in 2004 in his early 90s.

Salisbury knew the Higgins family because he stored five of his own railcars at the Mother Parkers plant in Ajax, east of Toronto. He often served as chef on the Pacific for the family’s private functions and charity fundraisers.

Salisbury jumped at the chance to spend months working as a chef on the railcar last year.

“The dream of all dream jobs,” he said, sitting beside his wife, Janet Bayly, in their condo near Sheppard Avenue and Don Mills Road.

Salisbury has always been drawn to trains.

“I love railroading. It’s the romance of the rails and seeing this country,” he said.

“When you fly, you look down but travelling by rail...”

“Seeing the Rockies by rail is the only way to do it. Quebec City is the best city to see in Canada.”

Salisbury even met Bayly on a blind date during a food tasting event on his railcar, Northern Lights, in Ajax in 1991 and proposed to her on the Pacific on a run from Ajax to Toronto the following year.

They married in 2010.

Salisbury worked for Canadian Pacific Hotels, a division of the Canadian Pacific Railway, in the early 1970s before joining the hospital.

At Humber River, he loved his job and enjoyed helping people find where they were going or answering questions.

“The staff are great, the doctors are great, it’s great to put a smile on people’s faces by giving a smile or answering a question,” he said.

It wasn’t just people he helped.

Salisbury cared for more than one animal he encountered on the

hospital grounds, even adopting a guinea pig after trying to find a home for it for two years.

At his retirement party, Humber River’s director of management, Brad Achtenberg, praised Salisbury’s dedication, cheerful nature and helpfulness.

“Ron, at many times, is the first hospital employee that visitors and patients meet. His kindness and willingness to help others goes a long way in providing a friendly and caring atmosphere at Humber,” he said.

Achtenberg then turned his attention to Salisbury’s favourite pastimes.

“As many of you know, Ron has three hobbies – cooking, train antiquing and riding on trains.

Most recently, Ron was able to do all three hobbies by participating in a charitable event sponsored by Mother Parkers,” he said.

“He was the host and chef on the beautifully refurbished Mother Parkers train, which travelled across Canada raising money for Alzheimer’s research. Ron, I think you proved you were the right person for the job.”

War veterans living at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre are being well cared for, although some relatively minor improvements need to be implemented, a review of the facility has determined.

While a small number of “high needs” patients and their families have shared some concerns that need to be addressed, veterans are receiving care that meets or exceeds provincial standards, Dr. Karima Velji, who conducted the review, said following a press conference in the Veterans Centre Wednesday.

“Majority, if not all, of the residents I spoke with during my review just expressed outstanding support for the care and compassion of the staff and the centre and the care they get at the centre,” she told The Mirror.

Velji, chief operating officer and chief nursing executive at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care, was called in to review veterans’ residences after some families last year expressed concern with the care of their loved ones.

The results of a second review are expected next month.

Dr. Barry McLellan, Sunnybrook president, and Malcolm Moffat, executive vice-president, said the hospital will implement changes Velji recommended, including introducing a better complaints process, meeting more with families and minimizing patient moves in the centre.

Don Stewart, president of the veteran residents’ council, said veterans receive outstanding care at Sunnybrook.

ou’re not coming to my party! Not those exact words, but to some degree Mayor Rob Ford said as much to opposition councillors and their hopes of getting on his executive committee.

Wednesday’s meeting of Toronto Council was ridiculous our view – debating for hours on what would be on the agenda, even Committee a long debate on whether they needs broad should have a debate on emergency shelter beds. representation However, it was when attention was turned to including downtown councillor Adam Vaughan on the mayor’s executive committee that things became very apparent: Mayor Ford has no intention of welcoming anyone with opposing views into his inner circle.

“You want to put people on that are going to disrupt our committee – and I don’t think it’s right,” said Ford. “If you’re not going to support the agenda, you’re going to put a tax-and-spend lefty on there and I don’t want that.”

Yes, the executive committee is tasked with moving along the mayor’s agenda – whether you like it or not, in some cases. Ford assured any councillor could give a speech before the executive, and suggest motions that may be moved by members. It is, after all, their task to focus the conversation before it comes to council where, whatever is decided, it comes down to a vote. In the end, what comes from the executive committee may or may not get voted in by council.

Vaughan argued the committee needed some representation from Toronto’s downtown core.

Very true. Especially when considering since the 2010 election not a single councillor from the Toronto-East York Community Council area has sat on Ford’s executive committee. The city’s wins and losses are shared by all its residents. Having a voice that speaks to the unique issues of every corner of the city, and all residents of the city is not a bad thing.

Allowing someone from the left a voice at the executive table would not be the wrong move by the mayor. Choosing a left-of-centre councillor who can work constructively with Ford and his agenda is the key to having a contrarian voice at the table.

We endorse the idea of having representation from all sides of the political spectrum, from every part of the city, on the executive committee; and we call for expanding the motion by rookie councillors Mary-Margaret McMahon and Jaye Robinson to set councillor term limits to also include sitting on any city committee. newsroom

To the editor: A general ban on procreation would likely solve the problem of strollers on the TTC and satisfy some of the selfish souls who have been spouting off. However, many would consider this solution too severe.

Parents need to purchase the strollers which are not very long or wide.

On a visit to Scotland quite a few years ago, I noticed that the buses had an area at the front where two persons could sit in a double seat facing the front of the bus with a stroller in front of each of them. They were not out in the aisle. It would allow a few people standing room if not needed for strollers. The TTC needs to make room for this.

There are many annoying things on TTC, such as, people with grocery carts, backpacks, dogs, body odour and those wearing too much perfume.

Surely, we can deal with strollers with the precious little bundles in them.

Solutions to violence must come from community

W

ith the tragic shooting of four young people in a short period of time there has been renewed discussion on the topic of “Gangs and Guns” in Toronto.

For some people it is the defining issue of the day, while for others it’s only one symptom of many problems that we are facing. Unfortunately, rather than trying to reach common ground too many people are trying to push their particular political philosophy forward as the one most likely to solve the problem.

What I am concerned about is the growing polarization of ideas that has developed over the past few years as different groups react rather than respond to the real problem of weapon-based violence in the city.

the vigorous enforcement of the law, while others promote one that focuses upon the prevention of crime.

Both approaches have their merits and no question that one can point to various examples and studies that will support either.

However, putting too much energy into one or the other is simply going to keep us from achieving any real success in the long run.

Given the complex mix of economics, culture and politics that have come to create the problem, we are going to have to first learn how to talk together if we

are going to develop any real solutions.

More importantly, we are going to have to begin encouraging new voices to become part of the discussion about these problems and their solutions.

The truth is the population that was once Metro Toronto has now completely changed, becoming one of the most diverse in the world.

The problem is we have not learned how to speak to each other within that new diversity and as a result too many are being left out of this all too important discussion.

Really, what is it that we are trying to achieve?

Are we simply trying to regain the safety and security for those who have always been privileged to have it?

Or are we trying to attain a common goal that will see all of the people in the city safe and secure?

So rather than trying to make political points about whose philosophy is right or wrong, we should be setting out on a mission to use all of the tools available to us. More importantly, in setting out this mission we need to ensure all groups in the city feel included in the solution to this terrible problem of violence.

That approach is going to have to be developed by all the people of Toronto as part of our collective culture and values.

If it does not come into being then we are looking at a future where nothing happens because we are stuck in a “them and us” mentality.

So the real solution to the “gangs and guns” crisis is not in the hands of the police or the politicians, but within our own. n Joe Cooper is a Toronto resident and community activist.

She’s not interested in wearing them, in fact she hasn’t worn socks in months.

Rather, the artist, who has called Leslieville home for just more than 10 years, is using them to make bulbous sculptures for her next instal-

lation.

Socks might seem an unusual material to use for an art exhibit, but Stanford said she prefers working with material that could be described as ordinary or domestic. One of her previous installations, called Unravelled, saw her deconstruct then felt together thousands of steel wool kitchen scrubbers into a long length of yarn, which she then wrapped over and over

around itself into a giant ball of wool.

“I’m just trying to use mundane material in my art,” she said. “What I tend to be interested in with my work is the small, tiny insignificant acts that happen over and over again in someone’s life.”

She added she’s interested in how those seemingly meaningless acts actually become a part of who we are.

“For me in the last decade, other than being an artist, my life has been filled with domestic stuff,” she said. “I’m a wife and a mother.”

And as a mother of two young sons, one of the actions she finds herself performing constantly has to do with socks.

“I’m always picking up other people’s dirty socks,” she said with a bit of a laugh. “That happens over and over again. It’s a bit of a bother.”

“It’s men’s socks I’m picking up everyday,” she said.

“On the one hand, it’s just socks so why is it a big deal, on the other hand why is it still an issue for me or broadly?”

When she speaks with other people about the project, it’s generally women who nod knowingly about the monumental burden

that is constantly having to pick up other people’s socks.

The idea of using socks in her art first began percolating in Stanford’s mind about five years ago. She previously kept a sock diary where she photographed and recorded the socks she picked up off the floor and she’s done some drawings of piles of dirty socks. She began working on the sculpture piece in September and, incidentally, hasn’t worn socks since.

“The really interesting thing is I can’t wear socks right now,” she said. “I tend not to wear socks in the summer and I just haven’t put them back on.”

Don’t worry, she has a warm pair of winter boots.

The sock sculptures are made by soaking the socks in glue and then shaping them onto different forms.

For the show, the sculptures will be installed over all the surfaces of a small room in an organic fashion, not in a uniform pattern. It

takes place at Gallery 1313 on Queen Street West in Parkdale from May 15 to 26.

The project is supported by a Toronto Arts Council grant.

But before she can finish, Stanford needs lots and lots of socks. So far she’s received donations of hundreds of socks from fellow Leslieville artists and her neighbours, but in order to complete her project she estimates she’ll need about 1,000.

While some people think it’s bizarre that she’s using socks as an artistic medium, they’ve been happy to help her out with donations.

“People are really happy that they’re going to be used for something,” Stanford said. “And wives seems to be really happy to get rid of their husband’s tube socks.”

Anyone willing to donate their orphaned, unmatched or holey footwear can email her at kim@kimstanford. com – one stipulation, they can’t be new.

“They have to have been handled and shaped.”

ay Jonasson celebrates his birthday twice a year; one his actual day of birth, the other his rebirth.

The former North York resident was a seemingly healthy competitive runner when he collapsed at the finish line of the Ancaster Old Mill five kilometre race in 1996 at age 39.

As he had just completed another race three days prior without incident, the seasoned masters runner figured he was coming down with the flu and brushed off the episode.

But as time wore on and Jonasson still felt sluggish, he decided to visit the doctor. Blood tests showed he was suffering from primary sclerosing cholangitis, a liver disease which causes inflammation, scarring and destruction of the bile ducts inside and outside of the liver. The only cure is a transplant.

Doctors told him to expect to be on the transplant list in three to five years, but he remained healthy enough to stay off the list for 12, until an infection in 2008. It took

two and a half years to find a donor.

Jonasson had stopped for lunch and had a hamburger in his hand when he got the call on July 13, 2011, saying he would be going under the knife at 8 p.m. that night at a London hospital.

The transplant was later postponed until the following morning and Jonasson spent just under two weeks in hospital recovering.

He considers July 14 his “rebirthday�, almost a month to the day following his real birth date of June 13. “The nurse who admitted me into ICU on the 13th said my eyes were white again after the transplant,� he recalled. “I was yellow before then.�

There was a time, not long before he got the call saying a donor had been found, when Jonasson thought he would end up being a donor for someone in need. “I was in the hospital two times in nine days for bleeding,� he said. “I informed my transplant co-ordinator I would likely be kept in the hospital and would most likely be a donor as my time was up.

I thought someone was going to have a damn good heart. And I was OK with that situation.�

Sixteen years after Jonasson last laced up his shoes for a 800m event, he’ll

be hitting the pavement Sunday at York University’s Track and Field Centre for the Ontario Masters competition, where he hopes to run in under three minutes.

The two-time 800m age champion with the Ontario Masters said he’s not out to win, just to partake. “I won’t be at the front of the pack anymore,� he said. “I want to let people know (disease) can happen, but anything is possible. I want to bring awareness to organ donation. People don’t want to face their own mortality.

The 56-year-old said the one thing that kept him going all those years ago was his desire to attend his daughter Elizabeth’s university graduation.

This May he’ll be heading to California to watch her receive her MBA. As of Thursday, Feb. 21, 198 people are on the waiting list for a liver transplant in Ontario.
