Suicide is the ultimate form of despair and
hopelessness,” said Peter Youngren, the executive director the 4Life Foundation. “That is a brutal fact.” The 4Life Foundation is a Canadian charity that provides opportunities for at-risk youths to have a better life through sport, education, music and dance. Residents came armed with an array of questions and concerns, some local, some city wide, at a Ward 10 town hall meeting last Thursday. The packed meeting inside the newly opened Bathurst-Finch Community Hub, at the southwest corner of Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue, touched on the possibility of a casino and entertainment complex built downtown, community safety, park upgrades and a new Centennial Library and Herbert. H. Carnegie Centennial Centre. Paul Godfrey, chair of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, told those at the meeting he wants to build an iconic structure in the city that would create 6,000 construction jobs and 12,000 permanent jobs once built. “The gambling portion would be 10 per cent of the space,” he said, adding the entertainment complex would help boost conventions in the city. “City politicians have to decide if they want this, then we will pick a site. We’ve been talking to the city since mid-June and by the end of March or early April we expect a decision. We will build one, whether it’s in Toronto, Markham, Vaughan or Mississauga.” Noting cost increases such as policing to patrol such a large complex, ward councillor James Pasternak said he would not be supporting the project in the city, which was met with applause. On the local side, traffic congestion along Dufferin Street, between Steeles and Finch avenues, was a concern, with residents wondering >>>park, page 5
