It’s not that Jim Scott and Jim Robertson, who live in the gay village neighbourhood of Church and Wellesley streets, are hiding their same-sex union of 49 years.

It’s that they had planned on getting married next year on their 50th anniversary and inviting their loved ones to that celebration.

Instead, they made a last-minute decision to tie the knot June 25 at My Big Fab Gay Garden Wedding at North York’s Toronto Botanical Garden and urged organizers and guests to keep the news from their family and friends, although they later laughingly acknowledged the cat is now out of the bag.

Scott and Robertson, former teachers, were one of 14 same-sex couples to exchange vows at the WorldPrideaffiliated event, including 10 who got married and four who renewed their vows.

As first reported in The Mirror June 20, the ceremony was officiated by Rev. Brent Hawkes, senior pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, a church that was instrumental in changing the law on same-sex marriage.

“Good relationships take work and great relationships take a lot of work but the good news is it’s worth it,” he told the couples.

Hawkes recounted how he had to wear a bullet-proof vest and have police protection when performing Canada’s first same-sex marriage in Toronto in 2001.

“It’s amazing when you realize you had to wear a bullet proof vest to do a wedding and now, today, see how far we’ve come just since 2001,” he told The Mirror after the ceremony.

“Today was a lot of people here, gay and straight, and in 68 countries in the world, everybody here would have been arrested simply for being at this kind of a gathering and in eight countries, I would have been executed for being gay, just for being gay. So, we have a lot of work to do while we celebrate how far we’ve come.”

Scott and Robertson, who are planning a honeymoon in December to South Africa, now plan to renew their vows next year to mark the 50th year of their union.

Although they only decided six days before the wedding to get married, they agreed the ceremony was everything they could have hoped for.

“It’s the culmination of a lot of things we’ve done on the spur of

the moment. This was almost spur of the moment but not quite,” Scott told The Mirror during the reception party.

“It is kind of an affirmation of all the things, 49 years, that we’ve been through together and it’s WorldPride and our own church minister married us. It seemed like all the stars were ready, even though our 50th anniversary is not until March. We will have a big party next May or June and do this again.”

The timing of the wedding made sense, Robertson agreed.

“We’ve had a wonderful life. We’ve been blessed. We’ve been on a honeymoon for 49 years. It’s finally time to tie the knot and make it legal,” he said.

Their almost five decades together have brought lows, including the loss of parents and friends, but many more highs, they said, “Our lives have been really blessed, there’s no other way to put it,” Scott said.

“Good friends, good food, lots of vodka.”

After laughing, Robertson agreed.

“Lots of travel, we’ve travelled the world,” he said before thanking the organizers and several businesses for providing the wedding and reception at no cost to the couples.

“It’s been a wonderful event. They planned it so well.”

Carrie-Ann and Lindsay Rogers were the first couple to register for the wedding, which featured a harpist, bubbles floating through the air over the guests, hedges decorated with rainbow umbrellas and one with a floral display reading ‘This garden grows love’ and a reception with food stations.

“For me, we had always said we would marry at Pride because it was the place we could be safe to be a couple and to be free. Even looking at honeymoon spots, we have to look at where we can go and hold hands without being the centre of a hate crime or something,” said Carrie-Ann, who wore a dress with a rainbow skirt.

“So, here was a place where everybody comes together as a community.

We’re all the same here. We’re not different, we’re not strange or weird and we can love the person we love freely and completely.”

After being with Carrie-Ann for five years, Lindsay said the wedding was all that she had hoped for and more.

“Today was just incredible. It was just a bunch of people coming together and the support and love not only from the crowd but from all the other couples was incredible.”

In addition to Scott and Robertson and the Rogers, the wedding included 12 other couples.

They were introduced only by first names. One couple asked not to be publicly identified. The couples were: • Erna and Nora, who met at university in the Philippines in 1965 but felt they couldn’t be together as a couple in the strongly Catholic country. By 1976, they were both in Canada but still felt too oppressed but by 1994, they were living together.

• Ashley and Kristen, who met in high school as friends and then went their separate ways before reconnecting 10 years ago. They have been a couple for four years.

• Caitlin and Jordan, who had planned to marry in Las Vegas until they were told it wouldn’t be legally binding. They cancelled their plans and came to Toronto.

• Ricky and Mitchell, who have been together for three years and describe themselves as soul mates.

• Connor and Kevin, who have been together for nine years and say they have a relationship built on trust and Mitchell and Ricky unconditional love. exchange vows.

• Melissa and Amanda, who met a year after Melissa found herself a widow with four children including a two-month-old baby in 2009. Amanda helped Melissa overcome her grief.

• Randy and Jason, who met about five years ago and have been engaged since 2009.

• Laurel and Melvana, who renewed their vows because their wedding was a “disaster” complete with family fighting.

They renewed their vows with their newly adopted son and daughter.

• Bill and Thomas, who live in Illinois and have been together 28 years. They were married in a five-minute ceremony at a courthouse but came to Toronto to renew their vows.

• Christine and Laura, who met last October, married in a civil ceremony on June 13 and renewed their vows in Toronto.

• Gurvinder and Brixton, who have been together for 20 years and are parents to a two-year-old toddler and eight-month-old twins.

Ford wrong to play favourites with media

W

ith Mayor Rob Ford’s return to civic politics after a stay in a rehabilitation facility, we would expect to see some lessons learned and some new attitudes heading into October’s civic election.

Ford has been a controversial figure at best of times, with as colourful a political persona as his private one.

It’s all made for curiously divisive leadership for this large, world-class city.

But when he begins to hold press conferences, picking and choosing whom he invites from the accredited city hall media gallery, we’re not quite sure he’s learned much during his time away.

Surely all news organizations deserve a place at the mayor’s table.

Metroland Media Toronto puts close to 500,000 newspapers on Toronto doorsteps every Thursday, with nine newspapers, including The North York Mirror. Then there’s our www.insidetoronto.com website. And we haven’t even mentioned the 100-plus other Metroland newspapers in the province posting the stories our view we tell on their own websites.

That’s not a bad household Mayor exludes reach and larger than the Globe citizens when he and Mail, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun and National Post distribupicks favourites tion combined on that day of the week.

But it wasn’t enough to avoid exclusion from the mayor’s first meeting after rehabilitation earlier this week, along with The Canadian Press and NOW magazine and others.

We expect that sitting politicians and hopeful candidates understand that people receive their news and information in a varied number of ways.

When you play favourites with the media, you shut the door to opportunity to reach citizens who voted you into office.

We really don’t get the point.

Surely he might have learned that through his trials and tribulations with the Toronto Star.

We sincerely hope Ford’s time in rehabilitation facilities has helped combat his personal issues. Given his comments when returning to Toronto on Monday, he would like you to believe that, too.

We’d love to spend the months leading to the next civic election talking about policy and performance and not abuses. But being exclusionary to some media members continued a bad pattern of his prerehab practises and doesn’t create confidence in Ford having changed his practises.

The mayor has a chance to hit a reset button.

We’re not convinced he is prepared to take advantage of that opportunity.

Misunderstanding over food court snub

M

y summer’s not exactly off to the best of starts, I’m afraid. My alleged friend Cheryl just informed me she’s not talking to me.

I say alleged, because the matter is currently before the courts. Food courts, that is.

The point is, Cheryl said she was so upset she may never speak to me again.

That was two Saturdays ago.

Since then she has been phoning me a minimum of twice a day during the week and five times a day on weekends just to make sure there is no misunderstanding. When she says she’s not talking to you, she says she means it and she doesn’t care how many times she has to call you to remind you she means it.

The reason I’m in her bad books? She claims I breezed right by her in the Yorkdale food court that fateful Saturday.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY On Food Court Snubs, I looked her squarely in the eye several times during the process, too.

What’s more, it wasn’t the first occasion I’ve done this, she also claims in her sworn declaration. She insists when it comes to her, I’m a serial snubber.

Well, I plead not guilty on all counts and with an iron clad explanation. I didn’t intentionally disregard Cheryl in that crowded Yorkdale food court. The truth is, I don’t recall seeing her there.

I also didn’t deliberately ignore her in a similarly jam-packed Fairview Mall food court last week as she insists. Nor did I avoid her in the busy Eaton Centre food court either.

The reason I sometimes don’t say hi to Cheryl is simple: she’s not easy to recognize. She looks com-

pletely different just about every time you see her. Or don’t see her, to be accurate.

She changes both her hair colour and hair style at least once a month each.

After all these years I have no idea what colour her hair is, natural or otherwise.

I also don’t know whether it’s wavy or straight, long or short, or if she has bangs or no bangs.

Her wardrobe also seems to be in a constant state of flux. What she actually looks like is a complete mystery.

Now, I’ve got to hand it to Cheryl for the constant makeovers. Not everyone has the courage to repeatedly change their appearance. She’s brimming with self-confidence. But she really has to cut me some slack for being unaware that we’ve crossed paths. The fact is, even when she’s standing right next to me, I often do a double take.

The most ridiculous food court snub she accused me of was in Lawrence Square right after a power

outage several summers back. Everybody was in a hurry to get out of there and she zoomed right by me, wearing – wait for it – dark sunglasses, a scarf and a hat, which she later confirmed while taking me to task.

Now I implore you, how the heck was I supposed to know that was her? No matter. There was an impassioned voicemail waiting for me when I got home.

The message? Not only was she not going to talk to me for a whole year, but she predicted it would be the longest year of my life.

Well, as it turns out her prophecy was bang on.

Without doubt, it was the longest year of my life. Not that it came as any surprise, mind you.

How could it not be?

I couldn’t get her off the phone.

F

ormer military housing at Downsview Park will be demolished and turned into a park until a new subdivision is built on the site.

After months of negotiations, North York Community Council agreed June 17 to grant Canada Lands Company demolition permits to knock down 81 former military personnel homes on John Drury Drive and Robert Woodhead Crescent near Sheppard Avenue and Keele Street.

Canada Lands, appointed by the federal government to manage Downsview Park, wants to demolish the homes that have been vacant for years to deter vandalism and squatters.

The houses were vacated after Canadian Forces Base Downsview closed in the mid-1990s. The area has been fenced off for the last couple of years.

The homes, built primar-

ily in the 1950s but some as recently as 1980, were standard military housing and do not have unique heritage qualities, a report by Taylor Hazell Architects for Canada Lands concluded.

Councillors were on the verge of granting the demotion permits several months ago until York West Councillor Anthony Perruzza asked that the area be turned into a park until the future William Baker neighbourhood is built on the north side of the site.

A 121,400-square-metre (30-acre) woodlot will be protected from development.

Perruzza thanked Canada Lands and councillors for agreeing to the park on “a beautiful part” of the base.

“It has an old heritage woodlot with old trees,” he said.

“If you want to cycle, walk your dog, sit under the shade of some mature trees, you will be allowed to do that and really to do that for the first time in 20 years.”

Meanwhile, councillors also

agreed to include 10 buildings or building complexes used at the former military base on the city’s inventory of heritage properties.

“The buildings and building complexes date from 1928 to 1971 and are valued as part of a rare collection of structures linked to the aviation history of Canada that represent the evolution of the site from its origins as an airfield with a manufacturing complex founded and expanded by the de Havilland Aircraft Company of Canada, to its role in the second half of the 20th century as a military base in Toronto, and its status as a local landmark,” a city report said.

“The proposed listing of additional structures on the heritage inventory will enable council to protect all of the heritage attributes and values of the site while allowing the property owner to move forward with their future planning objectives.”

ing, a central heating plant, a supply depot, workshops and storage buildings.

Because Downsview Park is owned by the federal government, the city can’t designate the buildings under the Ontario Heritage Act, according to the report.

“However, with the potential sale and redevelopment of portions of the property at 1133-1377 Sheppard Ave. W., it is important that the buildings or building complexes on the site that have cultural heritage value be listed on the city’s heritage inventory to enable staff to monitor any development proposals affecting them to

encourage the preservation of their heritage values and attributes,” the report said.

Since the approval of the Downsview Area secondary plan, two of the building complexes previously identified as heritage resources have been demolished, the report said.

“As a result, it is important that the remaining buildings or building complexes without heritage protection be listed on the City of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Properties,” it said.

Geoff Kettel, chair of the North York Community Preservation Panel, said putting the buildings on the city’s heritage inventory would

require Canada Lands to give 60 days notice if it wants to demolish the buildings, giving city staff a chance to persuade officials to preserve them.

Canada Lands has objected to the listing, citing the need to “treat the site as a whole, rather than listing individual buildings.”

While the panel agrees the buildings should be treated as a whole for planning purposes, there is a need to protect them individually, Kettel said.

Report cards: Environmental alliance issues their grades Councillors graded on commitment to the environment DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayor Rob Ford and many of those who’d been loyal to him on council over the last term got failing grades for their protection of the environment from the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA).

The environmental activist group released its Enviro Report Card for council’s 2010-2014 term on June 26.

The report card graded based on how councillors voted on 31 issues, ranging from water efficiency and downspout disconnects to the 2011 decision to remove the Jarvis Street bike lanes, to Ford’s motion in January to cut $7 million from the city’s tree planting budget.

On that scale, Ford did worse than anybody, scoring 13 per cent – or an ‘F’ – along with 16 other councillors.

Seventeen councillors, meanwhile, scored ‘A+’.

Franz Hartmann, the executive director of TEA, admitted the result skewed far from a bell curve.

“If you think of this council as the class of 2014, it could best be described as a battle between those who want to protect existing environmental programs and those who want to dismantle them,” he said.

“Thankfully the slackers, led by the mayor, lost. So we’re no worse off now than we were in 2010, but Torontonians should be profoundly disappointed with how their mayor did.”

Hartmann insisted the report card was not deliberately skewed against Ford.

“It so happens that when we ran those numbers the mayor almost always voted against the environment and many of the people who supported him joined him,” he said.

“There are exceptions — people who voted with the mayor on some issues but not on others.”

NBA draftee started out at Earl Haig Secondary “Way to go Dwight”, tweeted Earl Haig Athletics last Thursday.

The physical education department from North York’s Earl Haig Secondary School was referring to former student Dwight Powell, who was taken 45th in the NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets last Thursday.

He was then quickly traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers along with Brendan Haywood in exchange for Alonzo Gee. Powell only suited up for the North York high school for his Grade 9 year when, like so many other Canadian hoop stars before him, he went to a U.S. academy at

14 years of age.

It paid off with Powell just finishing a four-year U.S. college scholarship with Stanford University – and now on to the NBA.

And given all that, Pasternak thinks the D+ grade he received for his environmental performance over the past term is a bit of a distortion.

“This survey is a major disappointment and it is not a true reflection of my work at council, and many other who have committed themselves to approach environmental issues,” said Pasternak.

The first-term councillor said he was stung by the grade by the Toronto Environmental Alliance – which was based on 31 votes taken over the course of the term, on matters ranging from tree planting to public transit and recycling.

Pasternak said those votes are too narrow, and maintains he’s a committed environmentalist. He took particular umbrage at losing points for voting to build a Scarborough subway instead of an LRT. “To say that someone who supports the subway is less environmentally committed than someone who supports LRTs is really just the politicization of the issue,” he said.

“No matter what the approach, public transit is usually seen as environmentally responsible. At the same time, many of the people who got A pluses drive their SUVs to City Hall every day, whereas some of us who get low marks take the subway.”

Pasternak didn’t say who was driving their SUV to work. But he maintained that he himself has only driven to City Hall “a couple of dozen times.”

“My house has a rain barrel and we’ve done a lot of work in Ward 10 to approve lower speed limits, to improve traffic flow, to plant hundreds of new trees. These are characteristics of investing in the community.”

Austin O’Boyle named a top high school athlete

DAVID GROSSMAN nym@insidetoronto.com There’s no doubt about Austin O’Boyle being a multi-talented teenage athlete.

With baseball being his dominant sport, the surprise is that O’Boyle never won a Most Valuable Player award in that sport during his four years at Don Mills Collegiate.

Here’s the irony – O’Boyle did get in the spotlight after winning the school’s most prestigious award – Male Athlete of the Year – three times, once as a senior and twice as a junior.

Some who know the 17 year old, an academic honours student, claim it would have been a clean sweep if a labour disruption by teachers in his Grade 11 year, suspending many sports, didn’t take place.

But O’Boyle isn’t losing any sleep over the baseball snubbing, especially since he was picked MVP for Team Ontario at the national championship in Vaughan in 2011.

That was the same year he was picked MVP of the North York Blues, which won the Baseball Ontario bantam division title.

A right-handed pitcher converted to the infield, O’Boyle said he was flattered with the latest sports accolade coming in his graduation year from the Don Mills and Lawrence area school before shuffling off to continue his studies at Queen’s University.

“It’s quite an honour and not too many can say they were the top athlete at their school so many times,” said O’Boyle, who lives near

Victoria Park and York Mills and is a polite and personable youngster, but a tough competitor in sport.

O’Boyle was a three-time North York regional champ in the pool as a freestyle swimmer for Don Mills and also a power hitter on the school volleyball team that also won a divisional title.

Coincidentally, he was a team MVP for both sports.

On the Don Mills baseball team, O’Boyle was the winning pitcher, and belted a two-run homer, in a 6-4 win over Mackenzie for the North York championship.

“I took this seriously and it meant a great deal to me – something I will remember for the rest of my life,” said O’Boyle.

“Working with people who are developmentally delayed, are autistic or have Down syndrome. I saw the stigma barrier and was determined to get involved and do what I could to be of assistance.”

The next generation of soccer players to play for the Canadian national team may be practising their basic skills on a field near you.

Little Kickers is opening another franchise in North York with the aim of providing a positive introduction to sports for kids as young as 18 months to seven years old.

“We get children at such a young age group, we have to teach them in a different manner,” said Frank Stanschus, managing director of Little Kickers, which was launched in 2002 by his wife Christine in the United Kingdom.

The organization has since grown with more than 200 franchises in 16 countries and several in the GTA including in East York and the Beach.

Despite Canada being known still as a hockey-crazed nation, Stanschus sees the sport of soccer gaining popularity with young children in this country.

While local soccer leagues exist within the city, Stanschus said the focus of Little Kickers is to provide skill-based programs by trained professionals in the community where the

kids live.

“The idea of what we do is that we want to be part of the local community,” he said.

“We’d rather come into the community and don’t have (the kids) travel forever to play.”

The first program in North York will take place at Irving W. Chapley Park starting early July with plans to eventually expand into other parts of the city.

Larissa Gibson, Little Kickers North York franchise owner, said there’s already interest in the program and soccer in general with the World Cup tournament currently taking place in Brazil.

And with the Women’s World Cup tournament taking place next year in Canada, the

sport should remain in the public eye with continued interest coming from both young girls and boys.

“They’re playing together seamlessly and it’s great to watch,” said Gibson, noting that both boys and girls learn together in the program.

While the first group of Little Kickers graduates may still be one or two World Cup tournaments away from making the national team, there’s hope the sport will continue to grow in Canada by making playing soccer fun for kids.

“If you start at an early age and you love it, then you’re going to love it for life,” Stanschus said.

Baseball diamond number three at North York’s Bond Park is now officially called the “Tom and Pat Lawson Memorial Field.”

The diamond at the park, between Leslie Street and Don Mills Road south of York Mills Road, has been named in honour of the husband and wife who dedicated their time and energy to the organization of amateur baseball in the community for more than 35 years.

The Lawsons, who died six months apart in 2012 after 62 years of marriage, first joined the North York Baseball Association in 1969 by helping with their son’s t-ball team, according to a report

to North York Community Council June 17.

Tom began coaching in 1971 while Pat kept score and worked behind the scenes.

In 1974, Pat became the association’s first woman convenor. She went on to become secretary and treasurer.

The couple’s long involvement with baseball continued for many years.

Tom continued coaching until he was elected the association’s president in 1985.

A year later, he was asked to represent the Toronto Baseball Association on the Ontario Baseball Association.

Tom was president of Toronto Baseball from 1987

to 1997, while Pat became Toronto Baseball’s secretarygeneral in 1990.

“In the winter of 1988/89 Tom was appointed general manager of the Ontario Youth Team, which won back-toback Canada Cup titles,” the report said.

“Tom also helped found a five-team league named Metro East League. In 2001, Baseball Canada presented Tom Lawson with the Baseball Canada and Major League Baseball Volunteer of the Year Award. Tom and Pat were also inducted into the Carmen Bush Signature Club.”

Finch building to grow two floors LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Over the objections of neighbours, North York councillors have agreed to let a developer add two more floors to a residential building on Finch Avenue, west of Bathurst Street.

In 2011, the city approved a 10-storey building with 56 units at 591 Finch at Goldfinch Court.

At the June 17 meeting of North York Community Council, councillors agreed to allow the developer to build a 12-storey building with 78 units. That decision must still be approved by city council, which will review the issue at its July 8 meeting.

Several residents complained about the bigger building at the community council meeting.

“This is absolute greed on the part of this builder,” said Saul Libstug, calling an additional six parking spaces being added to the larger building “absolutely ridiculous.”

Saying it’s unfair to suggest he is greedy, applicant Farhad Morsh argued the smaller building isn’t feasible.

The city has designated the Finch and Bathurst area as a hub so development is reasonable to support the area’s services, which are now underutilized, he said.

“We see a nice building there for the community to see something new,” Morsh said. “The area needs it.”

The shape of the building has improved dramatically since it was first proposed and the developer is paying to improve the intersection, which will help everybody, Morsh said.

But neighbours, such as Sheldon Goldberg, remain upset with the larger building.

“I worry developers will be coming to you (council) with projects that suggest one thing and once the initial approval is given, they will be back for amendments,” he said “Are you setting a precedent? Developers, as we all know, are quick to learn.”

Ken Sigesmund agreed.

“This is a classic bait and switch,” he said.

Yvonne Booth is worried about the lack of parking for the larger building. Drivers from outside the area already use available visitor parking in the neighbourhood even when they aren’t visiting residents in the buildings, she said.

“We’re saturated to the point of having people in our visitor parking all the time,” she said.

But Morsh and traffic consultant Vivian Leung said it’s not fair to penalize the

developer for that, suggesting residents install access gates to prevent outsiders from taking up parking spots in their buildings.

The larger building complies with new city requirements for fewer parking spaces, Leung said, adding 20 per cent of people living in the new building are expected not to own vehicles.

However, York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, whose ward includes the proposed building and who was the only councillor to vote against the project, will meet with residents and city transportation staff to discuss traffic density and parking issues in the area.

Council made a conscious decision to reduce the requirement for parking spaces at buildings to encourage people to use alternative ways of getting around and now has to hope that works, York West Councillor Anthony Perruzza said.

“The horses have left the barn. I’m not sure anyone is going to corral them and put them back in the barn,” he said. “Is it a standard that is being well received? For all purposes, no, not yet. Will it be well received in the future?

Who knows?”

But it was a decision based on information from city staff and the development industry, Perruzza said.

North York woman bequeaths $1.8 million to architectural conservancy The Architectural Conservancy Ontario is calling a $1.8-million gift bequeathed by a life-long North York resident a surprising and astonishing donation.

The contribution came from the estate of Mary Millard, who was born in 1925 and died May 21, 2013.

She was predeceased by her husband and had no children.

The daughter of a justice at the Supreme Court of Ontario, Millard attended Havergal College but was expelled for unknown reasons, the conservancy said.

U. researchers earn grant money wYork

Thirty-nine researchers at York University were awarded more than $5.1 million in grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

In addition, five graduate students received $455,000 in scholarships and grants from the council, Canada’s federal funding agency for universitybased research.

The grants are aimed at furthering discoveries in science, technology, engineering and math.

Robert Haché, York’s vicepresident research and innovation, said the awards reflect the quality of research programs at the university.

assault: Police release composite sketch wSex Police have released a composite sketch of a man wanted in a sexual assault investigation in the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area June 6.

Police said a woman, 33, was followed as she got off a TTC bus at Finch station and entered Hendon Park around 2 a.m. She was then sexually assaulted.

The suspect fled the scene.

Police make arrest in sex assault case

Police have arrested a man after a woman was sexually assaulted in the Keele Street and Wilson Avenue area June 16.

Police said a man met a fellow patron at an establishment and drove the 21-yearold to the St. Clair Avenue and Runnymede Road area, where she was sexually assaulted.

Jonathan Vasquez, 33, of Toronto, was arrested Friday, June 20 and charged with sexual assault and overcome resistance by attempting to choke.

Gibson House to be at Cultura wpresent

Count North York’s Gibson House Museum as a regular Cultura feature.

Finch West Light Rail Transit Project (LRT): Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF) The Finch West LRT will add 11 kilometres of new rapid transit along Finch Avenue from the planned Finch West subway station at Keele Street to Humber College. The new service will provide improved, faster and reliable transit.

Metrolinx is undertaking planning activities in preparation for an Environmental Assessment (EA) to study and address the potential environmental effects of the MSF and include recommended measures to mitigate any effects identified through our planning activities.

Metrolinx invites you to attend a public information meeting to learn about plans for a MSF to support the future Finch West LRT line. The identified location for the MSF is a vacant property on Finch Avenue West between Norfinch Drive and Yorkgate Boulevard.

Wanted: caring families for affectionate cat, fun-loving young beagle

eet Jasper, who was injured as a kitten, resulting in a damaged growth plate in his leg.

Jasper is an awesome twoyear-old neutered male cat who is active, affectionate and so handsome!

He came to Project Jessie from a local shelter that felt he could benefit from being in a foster home rather than in a shelter.

Jasper had an odd “hitch” to his walk, and the shelter staff felt it needed looking into. A consultation and X-rays with an orthopedic specialist revealed Jasper had probably been injured as a kitten and the break in the leg damaged the growth plate.

As a result, the bones of one leg stopped growing, leaving one leg shorter than the other. His other leg was also injured resulting in some instability in his knee.

What does all of this mean?

At the moment, almost nothing, says Shelly Hawley-Yan, adoption director.

“Jasper is a silly, happy boy who climbs, jumps up on chairs, rolls around on his back to get your attention, and shows no signs of pain or discomfort. He gets along well with other cats and would love to have a feline friend.”

Jasper is on a mobility diet (supplemented with products to help the joints) and cartrophen injections. If he continues to do as well as he is surgery will not be needed. But what is needed for Jasper is a place to call his own home.

Ford must address personal record

I

t’s hard to know what to make of Rob Ford’s return to office.

In the speech that he gave in front of a few reporters, the mayor started off seeming quite contrite. He spoke of his enlightening experiences in the GreeneStone rehabilitation centre – that he overcame his own penchant for denial and understood that his addictions to drugs and alcohol are a disease that will require constant, diligent treatment.

He pledged to keep clear of dangerous and unhealthy associations that have supported his addictions.

He even apologized – to Torontonians and city councillors (especially mayoral candidate Karen Stintz) over remarks he made. And he acknowledged he is not asking for forgiveness.

That was a pretty good first couple of steps on a road heading toward redemption. But as the speech finished up, it was as though he stepped up onto the sidewalk, crossed a

It became clear Ford’s speech was an election speech. He spoke of his accomplishments, both real and claimed: how the mayor stopped the gravy train, saved money contracting out garbage and saved public anxiety by making the TTC an essential service.

A few breaths after saying he was not asking for forgiveness, he announced his intentions to ask for another mandate, and said he hoped to continue to be mayor for many, many years. And when faced with a barrage of questions that still hang over his mayoralty, he packed up his papers and walked off.

Now, to be fair, the mayor’s office and his brother Doug Ford had indicated for some time that the mayor would take no questions.

But a spontaneous answer or two might have gone some way to clearing away the stink of a selfsatisfied stump speech that hung in his wake. Given that he didn’t, the mayor might have spent the time talking about those hundreds of millions of dollars he’s saved taxpayers answering some of the questions he might have anticipated, and apologizing more specifically for his racial, homophobic and sexist slurs.

He might have apologized to the city staff that he’s on record as having abused.

He might have apologized to Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair. He might have explained himself, in terms other than those that seem drawn from the pages of a recovery self-help book.

Ford is a long way from being able to boast about a political record, without first addressing the deficit in his personal record.

Pre-tunneling work is taking place at the Chaplin intersection for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in advance of the arrival of the first of two tunnel borer machines.

More details on Presto system Metrolinx unveiled more details of its work to install the Presto smartfare system throughout the TTC. Riders can use the re-loadable card to gain entry at 14 TTC stations – to increase to 26 in the fall – but the service is not available on any vehicles.

A city report is recommending a subsidized fare strategy for low income TTC riders.

The report, endorsed by both TTC customer service chief Chris Upfold and the city’s executive director for social development Chris Brillinger, makes seven recommendations for a general “fair fare” policy to be considered by the city’s executive committee.

If the executive committee signs off, it will go to city council for a final vote later in July.

It wouldn’t go into effect until at least the end of 2015.

‘Exotica’ has flamenco pop flavour, singer says >>>from page 1 For someone who believes so strongly in love, it would be easy to understand if she was a little jaded. Just six days before her 1999 wedding, the nuptials were called off. Roxanna flew to Los Angeles to spend time with her father following her devastation, where she wrote her first song, Unforgotten, which helped her believe everything was meant to be and there was hope for tomorrow.

While in California she studied nursing, and began working as a registered nurse after coming back to Toronto and graduating from Seneca College.

Roxanna began singing and humming to her patients, and noted they were responding positively. One patient with dementia who no longer swallowed began to eat after Roxanna sang, she said, and the father of a young man battling cancer credited her voice with helping his son feel better.

In fact, the father, who wishes to remain anonymous, was so taken with her singing he decided to finance her debut album, Exotica.

“In my heart I knew someday I would pursue my dream,” she said of a singing career, adding she has her own label, Roxart Inc. Exotica, which Roxanna worked on since 2012, is produced by Mark Portmann, who has worked with Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Barbra Streisand and Christina Aguilera. The album, Roxanna said, has a “Spain and ocean” feel to the flamenco pop songs.

Though all the songs relate to her life, Roxanna said Here With Me and Unforgotten are her two favourites.

“Unforgotten is the first song I ever wrote,” she said of the song penned shortly after her broken engagement, adding the video co-starred Days of Our Lives actor James Scott, who played her paramour.

“Love never fades. You can get love from friends, family, dogs, cats.”

Here With Me is a song about love and romance and reminds her of the relationship her parents had. Her mother died last year.

Other songs on Exotica include Close Your Eyes, originally written for Dion, and

Only You, originally recorded as Como Tú by Iglesias, which Roxanna translated into English. Close Your Eyes spent

some time on the Billboard chart in the adult contemporary category.
