Lifetime reader turns page on literary fundraiser Marathon of Books takes North York woman across Canada by way of teen literature LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com

A

lthough she spends her days curled up with a book on her couch overlooking her picturesque backyard in North York, Amy Mathers is usually far from home. It’s not as confusing as it sounds. Inspired by Terry Fox and Rick Hansen, whose treks of thousands of kilometres raised money for research into cancer and spinal cord injuries, Mathers is reading her way across the country in a fundraising effort of her own. Through her Marathon of Books campaign, the 31-yearold woman, who lives with a debilitating disease, hopes to raise $100,000 to allow the Canadian Children’s Book Centre to create a $5,000 annual award to an author of teen fiction. Although there are awards for Canadian children’s books, there are no monetary awards for young adults fiction, a category Mathers finds compelling. “Teen fiction has always been my favourite genre. I personally connect with it the most. I like it because I find it insightful,” said Mathers, who lives in the area of Finch and Bayview avenues. “Teen books are about a moment in your life when the future is still being formed, you’re still forming your sense of self and figuring out where you are and learning how to deal with things that happen to you. You’re hopefully not jaded yet. And teens tend to show a lot of adaptability, which I like.” Like Terry Fox, who dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic

Staff photo/Lisa Queen

Amy Mathers has pledged to read one Canadian teen fiction book a day for a year to benefit the Canadian Children’s Book Centre.

Ocean in St. John’s, Mathers began reading books based in or written by authors from Newfoundland and has so far read her way through the Maritimes and Quebec and is now in Ontario. Reading one book a day throughout 2014, Mathers will wind up her marathon in British Columbia on Dec. 31. Mathers was born with glycogen storage disease Type 3A, a genetic and degenerative disease that prevents her muscles from converting sugar into energy. She had a liver transplant when she was five and a heart transplant when she was 27. While she can manage to walk short distances indoors, Mathers requires an electric wheelchair

outside. Because of her illness, reading has always been important to her. “I’m a big fan of books. Reading has played a very important role in my life. Reading was always there. I was reading to look for characters that were like me because I was pretty isolated,” she said. “But it was also about being able to experience the world in a safe way that I couldn’t necessarily do with my own body. So reading a book about somebody who could play sports was different. Or travel to different places, where I probably couldn’t go because I need a good health care system.” Mathers discovered the Canadian Children’s Book Centre

a couple of years ago and in October 2012 was invited to attend its annual gala, where awards are handed out for children’s literature. She admits she was starstruck. “I loved it, it was amazing. Getting to meet authors, to me, they’re celebrities,” she said. “I came home and I thought, ‘That was wonderful, amazing.’ I never even knew that (the centre) existed but I wish they had a teen award and I wondered how I could do that. But I thought I would have to save up forever to make the money to fund that kind of thing so I put it to the back of my mind.” Last summer, when Mathers first became restricted to her electric wheelchair when venturing outside, she kept hearing about different fundraising marathons and her thoughts returned to creating a young adults fiction award. “I couldn’t begin to even think how I would raise that money,” she said. “I was feeling pretty bad because I can’t run and I have trouble walking and I can’t bike. I would fall off, my balance is horrible. But I was thinking about Terry Fox and Rick Hansen and I thought about Rick Hansen and how he pushed his way across the country in his wheelchair. But I have an electric wheelchair. I was like, ‘It’s not going to mean that much if I’m just pushing a button across the country.’ So, I thought about what I could do and I’m a reader and I figured maybe I could read my way across the country. I modelled it after Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.” Mathers begins reading a new book each morning, although that is sometimes pushed to later in the day if she has other commitments. She also blogs about the stories she’s read. Given that some books have been more than 500 pages, she sometimes doesn’t finish reading until 11:30 p.m. “But I take inspiration from Terry Fox because I’ve read a lot of books about him. I like the

part where he’s like, ‘Sometimes, it’s just one telephone pole at a time’ and that’s all he can do. But if you add them up, it adds up to kilometres and provinces and he achieved great things,” she said. “Some days, it has to be one page at a time, which leads to chapters, which leads to one book at a time.” Mathers is also following tweets put out by the Terry Fox Foundation, which is releasing portions of the one-legged runner’s journal. “I follow them and I love their tweets because I can imagine him doing his running,” she said. “And some days, they have part of his journey where he’s like, ‘I’m really upset today, it was a hard running day.’ And I can identify with that.” Mathers admits it was difficult reading books from Thunder Bay, where Fox was forced to abandon his marathon in 1980 when his cancer returned. He died the following year. She read Thunder Bay selections on July 1 and 2 to coincide with the halfway point in her journey and then circled back to cover the parts of Southern Ontario she missed. She expected to be in Oakville or Brampton today. Now more than half way through her Marathon of Books, Mathers has raised about $12,000 of her $100,000 goal and is hoping more people will donate. “I like doing this because I see it as everyone can just give a little bit and we’ll all be involved and we’ll all contribute to this wonderful award that says thank you for the books,” said Mathers, who is inviting supporters to read a book from every province and territory to be part of her marathon. “Part of it is getting to read all the books I haven’t had the time to read but it’s also about sharing my passion with the country to say these are books that are out there and they’re so amazing.”

World Cup leaves legacy in Toronto

T

he World Cup of Soccer ends this weekend with the championship and third-place matches. And while the 2014 version has already provided plenty of heart-stopping action for soccer fans, let’s hope that this event has planted the seeds for a lasting legacy in Toronto’s communities. The event may have been hosted in Brazil, but the World Cup has a significant impact in a city as diverse as Toronto (where nearly half the residents speak a language at home other than English). The World Cup is a true spectacle, and not just for fans of the two remaining teams vying for the championship on Sunday. Whether it’s been by meeting new people out to watch a game at a local establishment, or having the opportunity to learn more about another country and its culture, Torontonians are witnessing a unique opportunity for comour view munity building. Events that enable citizens from diverse backgrounds to Community gather together often help building a forge deep lasting connections. And that’s not all. Sports by-product of events like these inspire stars sporting events of the next generation. In that, the World Cup is no different than the Stanley Cup final or the World Series. And there’s definitely value to a community in a less competitive vein – the benefits of regular physical activity for our youth: soccer can be an outlet for that. And compared to other sports, soccer is relatively affordable. We’ve recently profiled a number of local soccer organizations in the city that aim to benefit from the exposure the World Cup has brought. Visit our website at www.insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO to see those stories and all other coverage we’ve compiled on the World Cup and the 32 teams participating. One final note: Those of us still craving international sporting competition after watching the World Cup don’t have long to wait and have the opportunity to experience the competition live. The FIFA Under-20 women’s soccer championships are being hosted in Canada later this summer, Aug. 5 to 24. A number of games will be in Toronto at BMO Field (Montreal, Moncton and Edmonton are also hosting games). Two of Canada’s three games in the tournament’s group stage (against Finland and Ghana) are here in Toronto.

If you can’t stand the heat...

S

o, I’d just come back from doing a little grocery shopping at Yes Frills Saturday afternoon and was walking up the sidewalk of my street when who should I bump into but neighbourhood legend, Gordon Grouch. He was about to get into his classic ’50s Chevy parked out front of the building next to my place. “Man, what a scorcher in here,” he sighed after opening his car door. “I was driving around for more than an hour with the air conditioning going full blast and just dropped in to my friend’s condo for all of about five minutes and I swear my car’s already so hot I could fry a couple of eggs in the back seat.” I must hear that line 10 times a day each summer, and it dawned on me that in all my years I have never actually seen a fried egg cooking on the back seat of any vehicle, let alone a fancy shmancy Corvair. What’s more, I got a

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY strong feeling that if anybody could do it, Grouch was definitely the guy. So I decided to pursue the matter. “Sounds yummy, big guy,” I said. “Now, just out of curiosity, are you talking conventional eggs or organic eggs?” Gordon grimaced as he so often does. “What the heck’s the difference?” “You don’t think there’s a difference between conventional or organic?” I asked incredulously. “If so, I’d scrap my plans to try out for Canada’s Got Cooking Talent if I were you. You’ll be voted off the kitchen on the first day of auditions.” “What I meant is that the kind of eggs is irrelevant,” he said, appearing to get even hotter than it was inside his car. “All that matters is that, given the heat, they’d be frying away back there like

there’s no tomorrow.” “Really,” I replied, as I scoured the back seat that was covered with newspapers, fast food wrappers and empty pizza boxes. “Well, Gordo, I hate to take the wind out of your sails, but I don’t think even the great Sherlock Holmes could find room to roast one measly little peanut in middle of that mess, never mind a couple of eggs.” “So, I’ll fry the eggs on the front seat, then. All the better. It’s way hotter up there anyway with the sun baking through the dashboard window. They’ll be even toastier and tastier. And you know what? To show you what a bighearted guy I am, I’ll even sizzle up a couple for you, too, while I’m at it. What do you say?” I grabbed my stomach in mock horror. “Don’t bother. The back seat is scary enough. But the thought of you cooking up eggs on a seat you sit on seven days a week gives me the willies.”

“You’re missing the point, as usual, Jamie. The culinary analogy is not the issue. It’s the effect extreme temperature is having everywhere.” “Relax. I was just messing with you. How about just giving me a comparison involving heat WITHOUT food in it?” “It’d be my pleasure. It’s hotter than a sauna in my car. That better?” Yikes. The image of Grouch fully dressed in a car is bad enough. Wearing nothing but a towel and his trademark smirk gave me the double willies. So I swiped his keys, jumped into his car and bolted the doors, lest he get any ideas. Once inside I cleaned the clutter off the back seat and got down to business. “Four eggs over easy, it is,” I mouthed through the window. “Coming right up.”

Toronto firefighters work Thursday morning at the scene of a two-alarm blaze at a home on Paxtonia Boulevard in the Keele Street and Wilson Avenue area.

Two-alarm blaze on Paxtonia boulevard Fire crews battled a two-alarm blaze at a North York home Thursday morning. The fire on Paxtonia Boulevard near Keele Street and Wilson Avenue erupted at 10:45 a.m. on July 3. “It’s a two-storey property with a fire at the rear of the home,” district chief Stephan Powell said. There were no injuries. A dozen fire trucks were dispatched to the scene.

ering from serious head injuries after being struck by a city garbage truck in North York last Thursday. Police believe the woman stepped in front of the truck on Coral Cove Crescent near Lawrence and Victoria Park avenues at 1:32 p.m. “It’s a right-hand drive vehicle. She was struck on the left side of the vehicle,” Const. Hugh Smith said. The woman suffered trauma to the back of her head. The pedestrian was taken to North York General Hospital and listed in serious but nonlife-threatening condition. Concussion Clinic at Holland Bloorview wNew

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital has opened its new Concussion Clinic for children and youth suffering from persistent symptoms that impact their ability to participate in daily activities for more than four weeks. The clinic, which opened July 2, is the first of its kind in Ontario. As expansion of existing acquired brain injury ser-

vices at Holland Bloorview, northeast of Bayview and Eglinton avenues, the clinic offers a multi-disciplinary approach that brings together health care providers from neurology, neuropsychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and social work. Holland Bloorview also offers free concussion education and information sessions for parents and kids. web page for city road projects wNew

The city has established a new web page that lists construction projects taking place on main roads, with the intention of helping people make choices in planning their travel on Toronto’s streets. The list provides information about where the construction is occurring, the length of time scheduled for the construction, and its impact on the

roadway – for example, how many lanes are closed. The online list of projects will describe current and planned construction on main roads, but will not include emergency work by the city or by utility or telecommunication companies, or private construction work that results in lane closures.

the north york mirror examines a local issue

Residents react: proposed settlement in Sunrise propane explosion

our exclusive look

Meetings are scheduled for July 15, 16 and 29 LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com As he looks forward to celebrating his 75th birthday July 19, Vic Viani wants to put the devastation of the Sunrise Propane explosion in Downsview almost six years ago behind him. That’s why he’s pleased with a $23-million proposed settlement to compensate victims of the huge blast that shook the community at about 4 a.m. Aug. 10, 2008. “If it’s finalized, I just want to get on with my life. It (the aftermath of the explosion) just keeps going on and on,” he told The Mirror. “You reach a certain age, you want things that make you happy, not things you don’t want to think about.” Even though Viani doesn’t expect to get a substantial amount given that his home was destroyed in the explosion, he and his wife, Maria, won’t challenge the proposed agreement. “We don’t want to take advantage of Sunrise. If they think it’s fair, then fine,” he said. “Whatever decision they’re going to make, that’s fine with us. Everybody has trouble in life. You just want to get on with your life.” The Vianis were fortunately away caring for two grandsons the night of the explosion, which immediately killed Sunrise employee Parminder Singh Saini, 25, and left fire division chief Bob Leek, 55, dead of a heart attack. About 12,500 residents were displaced from their homes following the blast and a 16-kilometre stretch of Hwy. 401 was closed for 15 hours. The explosion was caused by a risky truck-to-truck transfer of propane which ignited

vapours. The Vianis’ home, on Murray Road, right across from Sunrise, was destroyed. They lived for two years with their daughter, Ida, and her family while their house was demolished and rebuilt. The couple, who have lived at the address since 1965, lost many precious items such as family photos, which cannot be replaced. Vic’s brother, Michael, who lives a few doors away, underwent surgeries to remove glass embedded in his feet. Last week, the proposed $23.345-million settlement was announced. It must still be approved at a hearing Aug. 7. The proposed settlement is the result of a class action lawsuit that named several defendants, including Sunrise Propane Energy Group Inc. and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority, an arm’s length provincial agency that enforces safety standards in Ontario.

It’s a fair settlement. Like any settlement it’s a compromise. We’re pleased with it. – Harvin Pitch, lawyer for the residents

The proposed settlement includes about 6,500 residents who lived in an area bounded by Keele Street, Hwy. 401, Dufferin Street and Sheppard Avenue at the time of the explosion. The settlement does not include an admission of wrongdoing or liability by the defendants or third parties. According to a notice of the settlement, victims will be compensated between $500 and $50,000 for personal injury depending on severity, as well

Staff file photo/Nick Perry

as for costs associated with being displaced from their homes, uninsured expenses, lost income and insurance deductibles. Harvin Pitch, a lawyer representing the residents, called the proposed settlement reasonable. “It’s a fair settlement. Like any settlement, it’s a compromise. We’re pleased with it,” he told The Mirror. Tony Di Santo, president of the Ancaster Ratepayers’ Association, will attend one of the town hall meetings to find out more. He has several questions, including the method of ensuring settlement money is fairly distributed, especially to elderly residents who may find it difficult to document their claims, and the amount of funds going to lawyers and non-residents such as the city. “Is that ($23 million) enough? I don’t know, he said. Residents can learn more about the proposed settlement at three town hall meetings July 15, 16 nd 29 at 7 p.m. at Northwood Community Centre, 15 Clubhouse Ct.

Vic and Maria Viani’s home was destroyed by the explosion at neighbouring Sunrise Propane six years ago. They are pictured on the fifth anniversary of the tragedy. DeBelle said he hired Hassan two years ago to help run the school’s Beyond 3:30 program, a multi-purpose after-school program for inner-city middle schools, and last year Hassan started working as a supply teacher for grades 6 to 8 classes. He also supply taught at Flemington Public School, Charles H Best Middle School and John Polyani Collegiate Institute. Hassan, who would spend his lunch hour playing pickup basketball with students in the gym, volunteered to be the DJ for the Grade 8 graduation two weeks ago, bringing his own equipment to the party, deBelle said. “Abshir wanted nothing more than to become a teacher in the TDSB,” he said. “He is going to be very missed. Growing up in Lawrence Heights, in a marginalized neighbourhood, he appreciated the challenges students faced. He made a strong impact on the kids.” Some 20 teachers came

to Lawrence Heights Middle School Tuesday to mourn their colleague, said TDSB spokesperson Shari SchwartzMaltz, adding crisis workers were on scene. A mother who said Hassan taught her 15-year-old daughter became emotional when talking about the shooting, calling the teacher’s death senseless. “He was one of the best teachers,” said the woman as she approached reporters, declining to give her name. “He was always here with them. Why did they (shooter) take him? These people are all cowards. Three weeks ago he picked up my kids at home

‘Dementia is in the House’ a new resource for teenagers Teenagers coping with parents experiencing early onset dementia can now go online for answers and support, thanks to a website developed

by North York’s Baycrest Health Sciences. The website, available in English, French and Chinese, is called Dementia is in the House. Baycrest, a world leader in research on the aging brain, has developed the resource for teenagers dealing with anger, confusion and frustration as their middle-aged parents experience behavioural changes associated with early

onset dementia. In treating the parents, behavioural neurologist Dr. Tiffany Chow realized the teens needed support. At the same time, she was impressed by their openness to change and their capacity to care for their parents, she said in a statement. In 2011, Chow partnered with Katherine Nichols, a Hawaiian writer whose husband developed early onset

dementia, to create an Englishlanguage website. But she wanted to reach into other cultures and teamed up with Montreal’s Dr. Howard Chertkow and Hong Kong’s Dr. Andrew Law to develop French and Chinese translations. Chow is currently seeking funding for a Spanish translation.

Dirty deeds in mayoral campaign? Is it going to get dirty, this mayoral campaign? That’s what Councillor Doug Ford suggested Tuesday, as he told reporters he believed a rival political campaign might be responsible for smashing a window in his SUV outside his Etobicoke home the previous night. That morning, a group of bare-chested protesters made a show of themselves behind Doug’s brother, Mayor Rob Ford, as he gamely bulldozed through a speech highlighting possible traffic woes. This Passion of the Fords’ narrative was upended somewhat when CityTV uploaded video showing a police officer chiding Mayor Ford’s sobriety coach for apparently kicking one of the protesters. That protester, a 52-yearold Scarborough housing consultant with the name of John Furr, confirmed in an interview that he had indeed been kicked. No charges were laid in the incident. Furr has also made clear that he is not a part of a mayoral campaign.

david nickle the city But Doug Ford is correct in saying that things are getting, if not dirty, then extremely ugly following Rob’s return from rehab. Rob Ford’s half-hearted attempt at a mea culpa fell flat – at least so far as the polls are concerned. The mayor still has supporters – he was given a hero’s welcome at the Caribbean Festival launch Tuesday, and on Monday was cheered on by an entourage of T-shirtwearing supporters – his detractors seem to have both multiplied and intensified. They have moved from fascinated disapproval to inchoate rage over the time of his absence. East York school teacher Joe Killoran, who offered Mayor Ford a blistering, bare-chested rebuke as he joined a Canada Day parade, has become a poster boy for this nouveau fury. bike lane network grows wCity’s With the addition of Simcoe Street, the City of Toronto’s bike lane network grew a little larger this week. Painted bike lanes are now available on both sides of the street between Queen Street West and Front Street. They’ll also intersect with planned bike lanes on both Richmond Street and Adelaide Street, planned for later this summer. The lanes, which are not separated from the rest of the street, went into effect yesterday. Even with the planned expansion, the city is still far short of its goal to add 500 kilometres of paved bike lanes. Scarborough, is the equivalent to Doug Ford, as he came to city hall to excoriate the Ward 2 councillor for his remarks in The Etobicoke Guardian about autistic children. It may, one supposes, emerge that these two and also the crowd of anti-Ford protesters who’ve been sitting vigil outside the mayor’s office are political operatives. It is more likely, however, that the people who are shouting over the mayor’s speeches and calling his brother a bigot are responding with genuine anger – at the racism, sexism, homophobia and lewdness the mayor has expressed – that is not so much motivated as it is provoked. Have these protesters crossed a line in doing so? Of course they have. As we trudge through the waning of Rob Ford’s 2010-2014 term of office, that line is so far behind us we wouldn’t recognize it if we saw it.

Ha v e y o u r s a y t h i s summer in how City of Toronto planners plan the city’s public spaces. The month-long Planners in Public Spaces initiative invites residents to learn about planning issues, hear what planners do, find out how they can get more involved in planning and ask questions about planning and development in Toronto. Attend a blue City of Toronto tent information booth at shopping malls, neighbourhood events, farmers’ markets and other popular summer locations across the city from July 10 to Aug. 27. This year’s events will focus on three significant city planning initiatives: consultation on reducing traffic congestion and improving public transit; a plan to introduce a development permit system to streamline and provide certainty in the planning process; and

an engagement initiative with city planners asking residents how the city can improve public consultation as part of the planning process. “We already have an exceptional number of people in this city participate in our planning processes, however, this is a big, sprawling place and we recognize the need to expand our processes to reach out to new audiences,” Jennifer Keesmaat, Toronto’s chief planner, said in a statement. “PiPS does just that. By going to public spaces where people are already gathering, we are making city planning more transparent and accessible for the residents of this city.” In its first year in 2013, the initiative engaged more than 1,700 individuals at 20 locations across
