The hotel at Don Mills and York Mills roads had only been open two months when Jeff and Carla Crothers tied the knot on the premises Sept. 14, 1974, becoming the first couple to marry at the Westin Prince Hotel. The pair, who called North York home until moving to Aurora 25 years ago, revisited the site of their union – complete with vow renewal, an exact replica of their wedding dinner, and one night stay in the same room they booked for their wedding night – for the hotel’s 40th >>>north, page 9

Get customized transit reports and learn how local projects affect you Bookmark insidetoronto.com/transit Transit affects everything we do whether it’s the struggle with gridlock during the commute to and from work, or construction that’s blocking our regular route to baseball practice, or if we just want to find a better way to get around the city. Getting around – by car, bike, subway, streetcar or other methods – is a major topic of conversation in Toronto these days. Transit is a key issue and it’s an important one for residents to be plugged into. We at The Mirror recognize that navigating all the information out there, about current projects, road construction, future and proposed transit plans is not an easy task. That’s why we and our sister papers at Metroland Media Toronto have launched a new transit portal online, where you can find transit information in a simplified fashion. See the new transit website at insidetoronto.com/transit
There you’ll find:
Transit reports based on the kind of commuter you are Transit reports based on geography, with a map of the city Project overviews for the major city projects Plus we have all our regular news stories on the transit issues of the day, and the TOinTransit columns written by transit reporter Rahul Gupta. Watershed protection applauded Environment action group Environmental Defence is applauding a city initiative to expand greenbelts, which will better protect the Don and Humber watersheds. “This means the Don and Humber rivers...will finally join the Rouge Watershed as protected areas under the Greenbelt Act,” the organiza-
tion’s Susan Swail said in a statement. Calling the city motion that passed July 11 historic, Swail praised councillors for adding the public lands into the greenbelt’s “protective fold” and for connecting Toronto’s rivers and valleys systems to the greenbelt’s natural heritage system.

Celebrity chef’s Italian restaurant to open in North York FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Yorkdale Shopping Centre will be home to the first North American location of a British celebrity chef’s restaurant when doors open next spring. Jamie Oliver has partnered with King Street Food Company to open Jamie’s Italian at the Dufferin Street and Hwy. 401 mall, which will cover 7,500 square feet next to Crate and Barrel in the former location of TD Canada Trust. Peter Tsebelis, one of three managing partners of King Street Food Company, along with Gus Giazitzidis and chef Rob Gentile, said their relationship with Oliver started in 2011 when the Brit walked into one of the trio’s restaurants, Buca, for dinner and later tweeted it was the best meal he had had anywhere in the world at that time. Oliver and Gentile maintained contact and one day a call came from Oliver’s business people saying he wanted to expand his restaurant in Canada and would they be interested in partnering, Tsebelis said, adding the deal was finalized around Christmas last year. “Canada is a place very close to my heart,” Oliver said in a release. “I’m always excited about spending time there, and whenever I visit I always get an amazing welcome. For a while now, I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect partner to open a restaurant with. So, when I tasted the menu at Buca and found that we had the exact same ideas in mind, I knew I had found the

right guys to kick start this exciting project with. It’s going to be epic.” Next up was scouting locations and Yorkdale was chosen due to its high traffic area, accessibility to the Greater Toronto Area in general, and different demographics from the downtown, Tsebelis said, adding they felt a central location was likely better outreach than downtown. “We love Jamie Oliver and we love Italian food so we couldn’t be more excited that North America’s first Jamie’s Italian will be opening at Yorkdale,” said Yorkdale’s general manager Claire Santamaria. Tsebelis noted King Street Food Company and Oliver share a similar philosophy when it

comes to using locally sourced products and fresh food daily. Jamie’s Italian will feature pasta and pizza made fresh daily on site, an antipasti station with cured meats and an open kitchen. Since opening the first restaurant in 2008, Jamie’s Italian has grown to include 35 restaurants in the United Kingdom and eight internationally, with recent openings in Singapore, Australia, Russia and Dubai. Founded in 2006, King Street Food Company includes Jacobs and Co. Steakhouse, Buca Osteria and Enoteca, The Saint Tavern and Bar Buca. Upcoming projects include Buca Yorkville in the Four Seasons Hotel downtown.

Presenting transit in Toronto as it relates to you

T
here’s so much going on with transit in Toronto these days. Construction projects are popping up everywhere – on roadways, highways, tracks and bike lanes. We all know about the maintenance work on the Gardiner Expressway, but do you know what’s planned for your local streets? The Union-Pearson Air Rail Link, the Relief Subway Line, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT – all major projects in the works, but do you know how each one may affect you? Or when they’ll be complete? Or how much they cost and who’s paying for them? Torontonians may agree transit is an important topic, but it’s been our experience that the subject is so mired in technical jargon and bureaucratic red tape, it’s difficult for the average person to comprehend the picture. People aren’t sure how our view big it affects them – and when that connection is lost, people become Our special disengaged. why The Mirror and website has ourThat’s sister papers at Metroland latest news Media Toronto have launched an online resource called The Transit Project. It’s a website designed to provide you the latest news on transit and commuting in and across this city. It’s tailored to provide you information on projects as it relates to you – by commuter type and/ or geography. We’ve got an interactive map of the city that provides reports on the areas you select. We’ve got overviews of the major projects on the go, like the Union Station revitalization, but also projects that are still on the books for the future, like the Yonge North Subway Extension. And then there’s our ongoing transit news pieces written by transit reporter Rahul Gupta (@ TOinTransit), as well as other staff on issues that impact our local communities. There’s helpful info on getting around the city, by car, bike, TTC or GO train. This is just the latest in a series of online products we’re creating to add value to your weekly newspaper. Many people visited our World Cup site at www. insidetoronto.com/WorldCupTO to find venues to watch games, read game and team news, and tap into the culture of participating nations. The Transit Project is a resource we plan to grow, especially with feedback from you. So check it out, bookmark it and visit often for updates: www.insidetoronto.com/transit. Computer and Internet lingo 101 W
hile dependency on the Internet is growing by the second, there are still many seniors who have yet to get their first computer, let alone one of the jazzier new devices now flooding the market. The cost is a factor, of course, and the technology is very intimidating to neophytes, too. But what’s also scaring them off is the baffling computer and Internet lingo. I can’t say I blame those people. I’ve been connected for ages and I still regularly struggle with the jargon myself. answers to faqs So, in an effort to try and ease some of the fears newbies have about finally giving in and getting in the game, here are answers to the most common questions. 1. What the heck is a
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY
cable modem? Of course, you mean who the heck is Cable Modem and he was the runner-up in American Idol 2 to the overwhelming winner, Maxell Tapes. 2. What is best laptop out there for me? Given that enormous gut sir, I would say a very loosefitting cardigan. 3. I keep hearing bandwidth is very important. How do you measure it exactly? Easy, peasy. Left to right. You start with the drummer, followed by the lead guitarist, then the rhythm section, the background vocalists and always end with the lead singer. 4. What is a cursor? Every coach in professional sports, apparently. 5 When would I expect to
double click? Right after you’ve been sitting in a chair for a really long time and try to bend your left knee as you get up. 6. What do you do if your mouse gets stuck. I’d have him call Jenny Craig, if I were you. Server issues 7. What’s the best protocol to follow when your server is down? Make a beeline for the buffet table faster than Usain Bolt being chased by Darth Vader. 8. What are the symptoms of a computer virus? A stuffed node. 9. What’s malware. Whatever Mal’s spouse tells him to ware, if he knows what’s good for him. 10. What are some of the most popular websites? Behind the couch, next to the oven, under your bed. You know the drill. 11. What is a blog?
A log for the Blue Man Group. 12. Exactly how do you suggest I Google my husband? I’d love to tell you, ma’am, really I would, but alas this is a family newspaper. 13. And finally, what’s a javascript? Boy double double meets girl double double, boy double double loses girl double double, boy double double finds girl double double once more, then loses girl double double yet again and finally, wins girl double double back. After which they both live happily ever after. And presumably set the stage for a sequel.

Alex Lifeson, left, and Geddy Lee, two members of the Canadian power trio Rush, on tour. There is a proposal to name a Willowdale arts park after Lifeson and Lee.
Willowdale art park to be a celebration of creativity >>>from page 1 The park will be built next year northeast of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue between Hillcrest and Princess avenue, east of Gladys Allison Place. While it will be a local space meant for area residents, it will be more than an ordinary park. “Two years ago, I came up with the idea to create a park that would focus on the arts and would be a celebration of creativity, where people could go to be creative or go to enjoy others’ creativity,” Filion said. “All the arts will be represented there but the focus will be on music and sound. This is really a new concept, there isn’t a prototype anywhere. It’s nothing we’re copying from anywhere else.” When it came time to think of a name for the park, Lee and
Lifeson’s names “just jumped off the page,” Filion said. Lead singer and bass and keyboard player Lee and lead guitar player Lifeson make up two-thirds of Rush. The trio also includes drummer and lyricist Neil Peart. Lee and Lifeson launched Rush as students of Fisherville Junior High School, northeast of Bathurst Street and Drewry Avenue, in the late 1960s. “All their early rehearsals were at their parents’ homes in Willowdale. Most of their early gigs were at local high schools, like Earl Haig,” Filion said. “They’re very connected to Willowdale and they’re very renowned musicians.” Rush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Saying he is a bit too old to have grown up listening to Rush, Filion is familiar with the band’s music but has become
more of a fan since the idea of naming the park after Lee and Lifeson surfaced. “I’m beyond impressed how intricate their music is with a three-member band,” he said. His favourite song is Subdivisions. Filion dismissed suggestions the name of the park may be confusing if people think it is named after someone named Lee Lifeson as opposed to the surnames of the two Rush members. “If it’s confusing, I don’t think it will be confusing for long,” he said. He is looking forward to the opening of the park. “It’s going to be a really amazing park. We’re going to be involving local artists of every type,” he said. “It will be a place to celebrate creativity. It will be a real asset to the community.”

DOWN MEMORY LANE Anthony Road Public School classmates hold reunion 30 years after the school closed
CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com
T
imes have certainly changed for former students of Anthony Road Public School, which closed three decades ago in 1984. But for one day this summer, time stood still as they saw their old classmates in person again during their elementary school reunion. “It was like old family getting together, and not just classmates,” said Jeff Haymer, who also recently attended his high school reunion at Downsview Secondary School. “The Downsview reunion was great. But this was like a dream.” Now 61, Haymer hadn’t seen some of his childhood friends since they were 11 and 12 years old. He recognized some of the faces right away while others he admitted to having to look at the name tags first. “Let’s face it, we’re all old,” he said, laughing. There was a mini-reunion in the summer of 2012 when some of them gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony of Anthony Road Park, which used to belong to the school and was later saved from development. But Haymer credited one of his Grade 6 classmates, Victor Perry, for getting the ball rolling on having a bigger reunion when he posted a message on the Anthony Road Public School Facebook group page consisting of about 170 members to see who would be interested. An organizing committee was then formed and the word got out about the reunion to be held in the very same school building they graduated from decades ago. While the building is

currently leased to the MukiBaum Treatment Centre, a special school for children and young adults with complex disabilities, some of the features of the former school still remained. Brenda Aisenberg noticed the same brown curtains and the same markings on the floor as she described the feeling of reuniting with old elementary school friends as “the most exciting and invigorating experience ever.” “I just felt time had stood still,” said Aisenberg, who flew in from Florida where she now resides just to
attend the reunion. “I didn’t want to regret not going.” She vividly recalled the family-oriented neighbourhood she used to call home. “I’ve never lived in a neighbourhood as special as that,” said Aisenberg. (Many of her friends may know her better by her maiden name, Greenberg.) “I’m still going to be in touch with some of these people.” Karen Selick, who used to live across the street from Aisenberg, also came out to the reunion after being invited by another former student, Resa Adler, via Facebook. “I was rather blasé about
it” at first, admitted Selick. “I hadn’t seen most of those people in around 50 years, and I felt no particular need to reintroduce them into my life.” But then she started wondering about what happened to some of her good friends after someone posted class photos from 1963-64. “I was impressed by the professional and personal achievements of my classmates. They are people worth knowing,” said Selick, specifically mentioning one of her friends, Marlene Shore, whom she met in kindergarten. “I was proud,
although not surprised, to learn that my friend had become a university professor.” Shore repaid the compliment. “Karen is a lawyer, litigator, writer. She reflects the independent-mindedness that was encouraged in our school and remained vibrant among many of our classmates through the years,” Shore said. “Though we came from many different ethnic and religious backgrounds, there was very little tension or sense of entitlement. We had wonderful teachers and classmates. We expe-
rienced and had to absorb a lot together – the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Kennedy assassination. The school was truly a community of friends.” Even one of their beloved teachers, Bryan Hill, also came out to meet his former students, which Haymer said was one of the many highlights that night. “I’m still on a high. It didn’t just die after the reunion,” he said. “Everyone has high school reunions. No one has elementary school reunions. This could not have happened if people didn’t want it.”

North York hotel turns 40; vow renewal part of celebration >>>from page 1 anniversary celebration last Thursday, exactly four decades to the day the doors opened. It was Carla’s mother, who had a contract to put in the toilet partitions at the hotel, who suggested the site for the nuptials of her then 19-yearold daughter and 20-yearold future son-in-law, Carla said. Memorabilia from the wedding was saved, including the original letter from the catering manager (the meal was $7.35 per person, which included cake), a $40 room rental receipt, the menu card, wedding cake top, key to the hotel room the Crothers stayed in on their wedding day, reply cards, and two towels. Carla had emailed the hotel’s catering department about the possibility of celebrating her and Jeff’s 40th anniversary in September, mentioning the pair had gotten married on site. The reply said the hotel was planning a 40th anniversary celebration in July and would the couple be interested in renewing their vows, a complimentary recreation of their wedding dinner and night’s stay in the exact room they had on their wedding night. “We said sure, that would be fun,” Carla said of renewing vows. “It was very generous of the hotel to offer dinner and a room.” Though some things were the same as they were on their wedding day – notably the dinner that included French green beans, roasted potatoes, beef, lettuce vinaigrette, apple strudel and coffee – other things were slightly different. For one, guests numbered 10 for the vow renewal, compared to 200 for the wedding. Carla and Jeff’s parents have since died, so instead of Carla’s dad, Johnny, walking her down the aisle, the honour was given to daughter Laura. Son Reece stood up for his parents, and since the now-mildew-stained dress Carla wore four decades ago wasn’t an option, she opted for a bright ensemble that matched the warm summer weather. “When we got married,

the pressure of the day was tremendous,” Jeff recalled. “Everything was a blur, nothing registered. Today is in slow motion. It’s a very special thing.” Any secrets to a lasting marriage? “We have a private joke,” Jeff said. “Every month for the last 40 years, I tell Carla I promise next month would be better. Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn’t. You have to manage the art of compromise and be friends first.” Carla agreed, adding “you have to really like the person you’re married to.” The Crothers weren’t the only ones being honoured as part of the Westin Prince Hotel’s 40th anniversary celebration. 6’ hotel employees honoured w‘original
A small group of employees, known as the Original 6, who have been with the hotel since the beginning were singled out during the afternoon garden festivities Thursday, which included a belly dance performance, a jazz singer, living statues, food and drink. The six were made up of Kathy Bartholomew, room attendant; Ernie Cohen, door person; Cecil Gray, sous chef; Tom Houtalas, service express attendant; Leroy Miles, bell captain; and Steve Tomaso, bell person. Bartholomew was just 20-years-old when she left
Montreal to find work in Toronto. Her aunt mentioned a hotel was being built and she should apply as there might be openings. “At the time I would do anything because I wanted a job,” she said. Not only was Bartholomew hired on the spot as a room cleaner, she was sent to work immediately – in high heels, no less. “I do still enjoy my job,” she said. “I’ll be here until retirement.” Tomaso was living in Peterborough when he decided to find work in Toronto to be closer to his lady love. His father told him of the Westin Prince Hotel that was about to open and suggested his son apply. He did, and the rest was history. “The years go fast,” he said. “I was told on the first day, I’m the first person people see and it sets the tone.” Tomaso was later promoted to supervisor of services, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Greater Toronto Hotel Association in 2012. Spread out over 15 acres of parkland, the Westin Prince Hotel has received CAA/AAA Four Diamond status for 39 consecutive years and is known for its Sunday brunch, said general manager Ashok Baghel. “We are giving back to our community and celebrating with our clients,” he said.

PROMO ENDS
Councillors focus on themselves Council’s marathon July meeting stretched out for four days last week. It wouldn’t have gone nearly as long as that, were it not for several juicy items irresistible to councillors in an election year: themselves. Council spent much of that time talking about reports from, and the future of, the city’s accountability officers. It extracted an apology from Mayor Rob Ford for robocalls, extracted a few months of salary from Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti and didn’t quite extract Toronto ombudsman Fiona Crean from her job. Each of these debates were extraordinary. The matter of Ford’s apology to Councillor Paul Ainslie was unique, in that Ford did in fact apologize. At the end of the long debate, Ford returned to the council chamber and said sorry for robocalling every house in Ainslie’s Scarborough East ward last year to tell them how he hadn’t consulted with them about his vote against the Scarborough subway, when in fact Ainslie had consulted rather a lot.
w
strike won’t affect streetcar rollout
david nickle the city There wasn’t much at stake: Ford has not done what the integrity commissioner has asked in the past, and gotten away with it. There was a great deal more at stake in the matter of Mammoliti, who in the end lost three months’ pay over an $80,000 “gift” he received from a fundraiser that the integrity commissioner maintained to be improper. Mammoliti disputes many elements of the integrity commissioner’s report on the matter, but council was unswayed and overwhelmingly voted to effectively take $26,000 from him. This is the first time in Toronto’s history that council has voted to impose a monetary penalty against one of their own. The penalty is somewhat diminished by the fact that it is so much less than the amount of money that Mammoliti received. But council could do no more: three months’ pay

The drivers say they will lose $1,500 per month because their new contract with the TTC to provide Wheel-Trans service imposes a per-kilometre cut of 36 cents, reduced from the previous wage-rate of $2.86 per kilometre. They say such a drop is “incomprehensible” given rising fuel and maintenance costs. The TTC maintains even with the cuts, the drivers are receiving a fair wage. Accessible taxis make up 60 per cent of all WheelTrans service.

A strike by workers at Bombardier’s Thunder Bay plant will not impact the immediate rollout of new streetcars, says the TTC. Nine hundred workers at the plant – which manufactures the Toronto Rocket subway cars as well as the new streetcar fleet about to make its debut on the 510 Spadina line – walked off the job Monday after failing to come to an agreement on a new contract. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross declined to comment on the job action. He said the TTC was still committed to launching the first of the new streetcars on Spadina as of Sunday, Aug.31.
The newly released provincial budget represents an “historic first step” for transit funding in the Greater Toronto Area, says the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance’s CEO. Sevaun Palvetzian also urged the province to keep the momentum going after
is as much penalty as an integrity commissioner can recommend and council can impose. Council did the right thing there, and also, in a manner of speaking, in the matter of Crean’s future. A critical mass of councillors, including those stung by her criticism of their work on the Toronto Community Housing board and the Public Appointments Committee, made the prospect of garnering the 30 votes necessary to extend Crean’s appointment impossible. But a simple majority was all it took to punt the decision to 2015. It would have been an awful message to send to accountability officers that their future depended on maintaining good relations with badly behaving councillors. In the end, at least council was able to finish their penultimate council meeting on something resembling an ethical high-ground when it came to understanding their roles and obligation.

Only two councillors voted against the recommendations from Janet Leiper, the city’s integrity commissioner. The matter was complicated by the fact that Mammoliti has launched a court challenge for a judicial review of Leiper’s investigative methods, which included looking at personal emails sent by Mammoliti’s staff. Leiper maintained that she has done everything according to the law, and city legal staff told council it need not wait to act. Mammoliti has since said he would also be seeking a judicial order to return his salary.

One-year countdown for Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Giant countdown clock unveiled by Cisco at Nathan Phillips Square JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Thousands packed into Nathan Phillips Square Friday to kick off a one-year countdown to Toronto’s next big chance to host the world. Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mayor Rob Ford and other politicians were on hand as Cisco unveiled a giant clock counting down the days until the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. The kick-off also marked the start of a two-day celebration in the square, which allowed people to enjoy live music, sports, games, food and more.
“This is a wonderful, wonderful opportunity for our city, for our province and for our country,” Wynne said of the Games. Wynne added the Games would leave a long-lasting legacy for Toronto, and for its athletes in particular, through the construction of high-quality sporting venues. “Ontario led the bid to host the Pan Am Games to showcase Ontario on the world stage and build new community friendly sporting facilities that will allow our athletes to train right here at home,” she said. “They won’t have to go to other venues to find a velo-
