Project START! engages students in science CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Learning about polymers and the human nervous system turned out to be a lot of fun for a group of Grade 5 students at Driftwood Public School. “It’s a we s o m e,” s a i d Michelle Huynh, as she took part in a hands-on experiment to make a rubber ball while learning about what polymers are and how they work. “It’s really fun.” Michelle and her classmates also got to make “slime,” just another interactive science lesson courtesy of Project START! (Students, Teachers And Researchers Teach) Science Canada, launched this past October by York University biology student Leedan Cohen. “Many public schools can’t afford labs,” said Cohen, who first got involved with Project START! when she took undergraduate courses in the United States. When Cohen returned to Canada, she send out emails to see if any schools would be interested in participating in the innovative program. After talking with principal Debra Lavine and noting the program would be run free of charge, Cohen and her team of volunteers worked with teachers like Sheri Alcordo to integrate the program into the Ontario science curriculum. “It’s not just a lab experiment, but there’s a take-home

message,” said Cohen, explaining Project START! aims to teach students how science is practical in their daily lives. “They all grasped it (the lessons) perfectly.” Each lesson starts off with a multi-media presentation followed by a variety of hands-
on experiments done in small groups. Alcordo welcomed the opportunity to partner with other community leaders to help students become more engaged in learning. “We build upon other people’s knowledge,” said Alcordo,
noting that with the school’s limited budget, it also helps Project START! supplies materials as well as volunteers. Grade 5 student Joel BoabiBoateng said it’s been a great experience so far. “I didn’t know anything about the human body or
the nervous system,” said Joel, adding he won’t forget the lessons he’s learned this year. “It’s actually memorable.”
Avenue when the “lower half of an infant” was discovered around 9:20 a.m. “It w a s l a s t c l e a n e d approximately two weeks ago, so it happened over a period of two weeks,” Det. Nick Nei told reporters at the scene. The gender and exact age
of the newborn aren’t yet known. Nor do police know the spot where the body was originally placed. “The creek starts all the way up at Exbury (Road) and ends at Wilson Avenue,” said Nei, of 31 Division. “All the pipes and the sewage system come towards here, and it’s
the main drain that washes down from storm drains.” The York Regional Police canine unit was helping with the search for other body parts. Investigators are awaiting the findings of a forensic pathologist’s examination of the remains.

Much to celebrate this Canada Day
T
orontonians have much to celebrate on Canada Day. We have a front row seat when it comes to witnessing the amazing cultural diversity on display in our communities. For example, there’s the ongoing World Cup of Soccer, where teams from 32 countries (each with an identifiable fan base in the city), are competing for the privilege of being crowned world champion. You can see the flags flying from homes, businesses and vehicles. You can see people gathered around televisions to watch the games. And you can definitely see and hear the jubilant celebrations when a team secures victory. Canada is a nation of immigrants. And nowhere else is this country’s diversity as visible as it is in Toronto, where nearly half of the population first learned a language other than English at home. We went to a citizenship cerour view emony and got the perspective of a number of new Canadians, North York’s Clive New citizens including Townsend, who spoke of the strengthen “privilege” citizenship granted him. Toronto In this country, we have much to be thankful for. Rights that we normally take for granted can be harder to secure elsewhere. So in honour of Canada Day, we’d like to throw out a couple of challenges. To the new Canadian: in the coming months, make an effort to find out more about your new community and city and all it has to offer. The summer season is a wonderful time to do this. There are plenty of places, such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario Science Centre, the CN Tower or Fort York, to visit and get a sense of the community’s history and characteristics. To the more deeply rooted Torontonian: use your time this summer to attend a couple of cultural events with a goal of finding out more about that particular culture and what it brings to our city. Again, there are plenty of options to choose from, including such festivals as Salsa on St. Clair, Taste of the Danforth, and Scotiabank Caribana. What better way to evolve as a community? As newer immigrants become more comfortable in their new home, and the more deeply-rooted citizens gain a greater understanding of the diverse cultures that make up this city, one of Toronto’s strengths – its multiculturalism – will get even stronger. Happy Canada Day, everyone.

The unsung stars of the beautiful game
T
he Netherlands’ opportunistic Robin van Persie, Germany’s legendary Miroslav Klose, Argentina’s incomparable Lionel Messi. These are just a few of the many stars glittering on the group stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. But from where I sit – in front of the tube in a bar or on the couch – the coterie of engaging British football announcers are doing just as much to elevate interest in the beautiful game. Their elegant play-byplay brings tears to the eyes. The following are a few of the standard cliches we typically hear while tuning in to hockey, basketball or baseball telecasts, followed by the mellifluous equivalents we’re treated to during the World Cup. 1. They’re really stinking
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY out the joint today. They are delivering a truly most unflattering performance. 2. Boy, did he ever get caught with his pants down. He paid dearly for his inopportune moment of uncertainty. 3. Talk about running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The lads currently appear to be a trifle disjointed out there. 4. Nobody, and I mean nobody, on the team has been coming back all day. The entire side is showing utter disdain for its defensive responsibilities. 5. The game has slowed to an agonizing crawl. Play has clearly taken on a decidedly pedestrian nature.
6. They almost choked. They barely avoided what would have been an embarrassing self-inflicted trauma. 7. Nice shot. It was an exquisite ball. 8. Hard shot. He left-footed it with venom. 9. Good pass. It was an elegant ball in. 10. Dumb pass. It was a rather curious cross. 11. He hit the post. He glanced one off the woodwork. 12. He’s a proven goalscorer. He’s resolute with the last ball. 13. He’s the quarterback of their offence. He’s the technical coordinator of their forward thrust. 14. Neither team appeared even remotely interested today. It was clearly a lacklustre effort, completely
devoid of enthusiasm. 15. Nobody expected them to have a chance against such a heavy favourite. They put on a truly marvelous display that belies their modest pedigree. 16. They really blew it. Big time. They have nobody to blame but themselves. Alas, they were obliging architects of their own misfortune. 17. Are you kidding me? What was the referee thinking? A child of four could tell that was a blatant dive. That yellow card was an emphatically dubious call. The contact was negligible. The apparently aspiring thespian clearly made a meal of it. York University, in collaboration with Seneca College, announced Monday that Markham Centre is its preferred location for a new campus. The decision to back the campus at Hwy. 7 and Warden Avenue means York now enters the final stage of preparing a bid to the provincial government in September. The government is looking to increase student capacity in areas where there is a high demand for post-secondary education. If approved, York hopes to have 5,000 studying at the Markham campus within five years of opening. That would grow to as many as 20,000 within two decades. York would offer its own programs and would partner with Seneca to make an even broader range of programs available to students. Once the province receives bids from post-secondary institutions, a multi-ministry panel will review the applications and make recommendations to cabinet, which will
make the final decision about successful proposals.

Police are seeking help in solving a dog-snatching at Sunnybrook Park. Police said that at 1 p.m. June 5 a woman met with a man who identified himself on Kijiji as a professional dog trainer. After a short conversa-
tion, the man grabbed the puppy from the woman and fled in a navy blue pickup truck from the park on Leslie Street near Eglinton Avenue. The five-month-old dog is a male black Cane Corso with a white chest patch.

featured speakers, performers, information booths and a refugee walk to raise awareness of the day. El-Farouk Khaki, a Toronto lawyer and downtown resident, said his family fled Tanzania in the 1970s among thousands of East Indians who claimed asylum in Canada and the U.K. after being forced out of their homeland. The UN estimates there were about 10.4 million refugees of concern last year. Another 4.8 million are looked after in some 60 camps in the Middle East. Canada accepts about 15,000 refugees yearly. More than half are selected abroad for resettlement here. The others are privately sponsored or arrive in Canada seeking protection.

ormer Jamaican soldier Clive Townsend proudly saluted Citizenship Judge Karen McMillan as he was sworn in as a new Canadian with 103 others just days before our country’s 147th birthday on Tuesday, July 1. “It is a privilege to become a Canadian,” said the North York resident after the ceremony. “I have been waiting a long time for this dream to come true.” An ecstatic Townsend, 50, said his first task is to register to vote. “I went to vote in the provincial election (June 12) and I could not because I am not Canadian,” he said. “I will be first in line to vote in the mayoral election in October.” Townsend moved to Toronto from Jamaica in 1995 and plans to sponsor to Canada members of his family. “This document gives me privilege,” Townsend said of his Certificate of Citizenship. “I have been waiting for a long time to become a citizen of this great country.” He said this Canada Day will be “even more special” as he is a citizen. Kulwant Kaur, and her son, Sukhjinder, 20, also of North York, were all smiles as they recited their Oaths of Citizenship. “My son will have a great future here with more opportunities than I had,” Kaur beamed. “We are very excited about our lives in Canada.” She moved here with her family from India about 20-years ago and never took out citizenship. “I am so very proud,” she said. “Now we can vote and have better job opportunities.” Many of the new citizens fled violent or war-torn countries and were granted asylum in Canada. Lara, 26, who lives in downtown Toronto and did not want her last name used, said her parents fled Lebanon five years ago due

to the violence. “We wanted to live somewhere that is peaceful and stable,” Lara explained. “Our family have been through a lot and we wanted someplace safe.” She plans on applying for a passport and public service job, for both of which she has to be a citizen. Marcia Collins, who recently moved from
Etobicoke to Mississauga, praised Canada as a great place to raise a family. “This is a wonderful country to be a citizen of,” said Collins, who came here from Jamaica. “Being a citizen means that I now have a voice and can vote.” Judge McMillan urged the new Canadians to vote and exercise their responsibilities. “Take pride in the
Oath and always defend the Canadian way of life,” she said. Ceremony guest Rana Khan, of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), reminded the new Canadians that June 20 was declared World Refugee Day, to commemorate the plight of refugees. “You have picked a great country
to call home,” Khan said. “Toronto and Canada have always been generous hosts for refugees fleeing from conflicts around the world.” She said events were planned throughout Canada to mark the special day. A celebration at Toronto’s Daniel’s Spectrum in Regent Park
Local residents can celebrate Canada Day by attending one of a number of fireworks displays taking place across the city that are open to the public. In North York, there will be fireworks at Mel Lastman Square, 5100 Yonge St., at 10:15 p.m. There will also be fireworks at Amesbury Park at 9:45 p.m. For a full list of public fireworks displays in Toronto on Canada Day, visit www.northyorkmirror.com

CHOICE DIAMO DIAMOND ND
Diamond Award Winner for Best Martial Arts School 4 Years in a Row!
NORTHERN KARATE: Developing the mind, body and spirit Looking for a great physical workout that also develops discipline and mental focus? Do you want an activity that is ideal for the whole family? Then Northern Karate Schools has the answer. Established in 1972 by internationally renowned martial arts champion Cezar Borkowski, Northern Karate maintains a traditional philosophy of respect for otherswhilemovingtowardsselfdiscovery and positive change. “It’s not just about punching and kicking. We’re about personal development. Our students are far more focused and tend to do better in school,” explains head instructor of the SteelesWest school, Kyoshi Steve Ouslis. “Many parents tell me that they see a huge difference in their kids after just six months of karate.” Under the guidance of Borkowski, Northern Karate schools incorporates a strong work ethic, unprecedented customer service and many years
of martial arts experience, that translates into serious and successful schools. “Unfortunately, a lot of places people go to are more playtime than teaching. But here, there’s nothing watered down – we teach the same curriculum to a child as we do to an adult. We take our customer service and instruction very serious, and that’s what people really like”, says Ouslis. Ontopofthetraditionalgroup classes, seminars and workshops, Northern Karate offers a plethora of special programs. These include the practice of traditional Okinawan weapons (Kobudo) training, self-defence classes such as Bully Proof® for kids and the street-oriented Reality Check®. With 10 schools in the GTA, Northern Karate caters to families and individuals regardless of age or experience, while offering a flexible class schedule and
a safe venue to exercise, relieve stress and develop focus. “We are constantly training, honing and improving the curriculum,” continues Ouslis. “We’ve been doing this since 1972. It is difficult to think of very many places – gyms, martial arts schools or any business for that matter – that have been around for this long.” For more information on Northern Karate schools, please visit www.northernkarate.com. Soknacki’s parking ban idea a worthwhile risk
R
eally, it is a good thing for a city, every three to four years to have a good long mayoral race. And not just because it’s healthy to change things at the top every once in awhile. Particularly in Toronto’s 10-month marathons, it lets us air out some novel and occasionally useful and far-fetched ideas on how the city ought to be shaped. In 2010, for instance, Rocco Rossi suggested that Toronto should have a mechanism for recalling a bad mayor. Rossi didn’t even make it to voting day, his support was so low – but there are probably a
binding-petitions-worth of people in Toronto right now who wish they had something like that over the past year. This year, mayoral candidate David Soknacki is on his way to fulfilling that role. Consistently low in public opinion polls, the former city councillor from Scarborough has been leading when it comes to ideas. His first big idea, to scrap the Scarborough subway and build an LRT
in its place, was soon picked up by rival Olivia Chow. His latest, to ban onstreet parking on arterial roads in the downtown core, hasn’t yet been picked up by anyone. It’s too bad, because the ban would probably do more to make on-road transportation faster and safer than any number of relief subway lines. Bike lanes wouldn’t be the impediment to car traffic that they are now, because they wouldn’t have to deke around onstreet parking spaces and into car lanes. Where bike lanes weren’t appropriate, cars
would have at least two lanes in a direction to move, and that would go the same for buses, which might be increased. And pedestrians would have a safer time crossing mid-block than they do lurching out into traffic from between parked cars. It would also tick off numerous small businesses, and a certain number of motorists who’ve gotten used to parking on the streets and don’t like the multilevel parking garages that Soknacki envisions to replace street parking. And those, at least in a mayoral race, are two sleeping bears that no
Volunteer at the CNE
candidate wants to poke. That is why it takes a candidate like Soknacki – who at this point, has no car-commuter, smallbusiness support to lose – to bring the notion forward. It’s a good gamble on his part. If the idea catches on with enough other factions in our balkanized electorate, Soknacki could gain enough support to give him a shot at the prize. If not, it is a good, radical idea of the sort that the more established candidates don’t go near.
i
The Friends of the CNE volunteer program is accepting applications until July 14. The CNE is seeking enthusiastic, outgoing volunteers for the annual fair, which runs Aug. 15 to Sept. 1. Volunteers will welcome guests, distribute programs, offer information about activities and shows and provide support at special events. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of six shifts during the fair.

trip for Hawker Siddley train wFinal One of the TTC’s oldest remaining subway trains made its final trip last week. The Hawker Siddelymanufactured class six train made a final run along the Bloor-Danforth line Friday before being taken out of service for good. First introduced in the late 1980s, The H-6 models were characterized by their brown interiors and orange doors, as well as for having a “privacy seat” that was located away from regular group seating. But they also experienced frequent malfunctions the older they became. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said the train will be scrapped for parts. delays on Spadina extension wStation
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) is supposed to be completed by 2016, but that may prove difficult should the delays continue. According to a recent board report prepared by TTC CEO Andy Byford, three stations – York University, Steeles West and Hwy 407 – are not maintaining a consistent schedule, while Downsview Park and Vaughan Metropolitan Station are also experiencing lesser difficulties. Only Finch West Station is proceeding as planned. test for new streetcar wRocky

It seems resurfacing roadwork on Lake Shore Boulevard West has finished earlier than expected. The city announced it has completed repaving a stretch of Lake Shore between Yonge Street and Windermere Avenue, which was supposed to have been done by mid-July. TTC must replace parking lot fence The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will replace a four-year-old fence at its commuter parking lot near Finch Avenue and Yonge Street that failed to hit the heights neighbours were
looking for. The TTC built the fence in 2010 to replace an aging fence on the east side of Talbot Road, north of Blake Avenue and south of Fairchild Avenue. But the new fence failed
to meet an agreement with residents that required a higher fence. At the June 17 meeting of North York Community Council, councillors voted in favour of making the TTC build a higher fence.

Local neighbourhood eligible for financing tool Homeowners from one North York neighbourhood are among the first in Toronto to be offered a chance to benefit from the city’s Home Energy Loan Program (HELP), a new municipal home efficiency program. This initiative, which offers low-interest loans (2.5 per cent) to qualifying homeowners interested in improving the energy and water efficiency of their
home like upgrading insulation or replacing an old furnace, air conditioner, water heater, windows, doors, and even toilets, is being offered as a pilot program to single-family residences in a number of areas of the city by postal code, including M3N, which is in western North York. Most of the other neighbourhoods are in the eastern portion of the city.
The pilot program will run for three years. Additional postal code areas will become eligible to participate in the future. The unique part of the program is that the loan isn’t attached to the individual but the property, meaning it transfers to the new owner(s) when a property changes hands.
