Toronto police are investigating after Willowdale MPP David Zimmer’s constituency office this week received a Bar Mitzvah greeting card containing antiJewish sentiments. Officers at 32 Division confirmed they are looking into a complaint filed by Zimmer’s staff over the unsigned card received at the constituency office Monday. Hand-written inside the card is the message “Jews Stink! ...and so does this Jewish greeting card ...and so does this stamp issued by Canada Post.” The card contains a Happy Hanukkah stamp with eight candles. The same stamp was used to mail the card, which features the message “Especially for you! On your Bar Mitzvah” with a Star of David on the front and the message “Congratulations and best wishes on your special day!” inside. >>>‘HATE, page 5

Two years after a “triple disaster” hit Japan, North York’s Japanese Canadian Cultural

Centre Foundation is donating $1.5 million to help the country recover from the devastation. The money will help Japanese youth build their futures, foundation chair, Shari Hosaki,

announced at the centre’s Spring Festival on Saturday, March 2. Eiji Yamamoto, the Consul General of Japan in Toronto, also spoke at the event, held at the

centre northeast of Don Mills Road and Wynford Drive. The centre donated $100,000 to the Red Cross immediately following the triple disaster, which began with an earthquake

and tsunami on March 11, 2011 and resulted in meltdowns in nuclear reactors. The catastrophe left 15,800 people dead, 6,000 injured, >>>CENTRE, page 11

March Break an opportunity to give back F

or high school and elementary students and their families, the March Break is next week. It’s a welcome opportunity to spend quality time with friends and family. It’s also an opportunity to get to know your community a little better through volunteering. We know multiple opportunities exist for citizens of all ages to get involved with a local organization, regardless of time of year. But a number of those organizations do have March Break-specific initiatives to consider. And spaces are still available. For example, the Daily Bread Food Bank is once again running a program in which high school students are invited to volunteer during regular business hours from March 11 to 15. It’s called the Take Action Project. our view This project, like many others, is an opportunity to establish Volunteering long-lasting community connections. vital part of A five-day period may be life in Toronto brief. But it’s long enough for a volunteer experience to make a lasting impression on potential future leaders as they glimpse some of the daily challenges those less fortunate face. Registration is required. For more information, contact Lauren Fitzgerald, youth volunteer program co-ordinator, at learn@dailybread.ca or call 416-2030050, ext. 289. Volunteer contributions make up a vital part of life in Toronto. Ensuring that our youth are active participants is a critically important part of that, particularly as our population ages. We need to ensure there is room for new energy and new perspectives. The beauty of volunteering lies in its potentially limitless value. The giving of your time – even of a few hours – to a volunteer organization does not need to feel like an impersonal one-way transaction. Everyone can win in these kinds of partnerships: the volunteer, the organization and the people it serves. That lasting impression for our youth can be a phone call or an email away. And volunteering can even be a family activity. We urge you as parents to consider the options with your school-aged youth. We urge students to take advantage of this opportunity to volunteer and learn more about their community.

Mayor’s committee selections defensible To the editor: Re: An opportunity to be inclusive, Editorial, Feb. 22. Regarding Councillor Adam Vaughan not getting a seat on the mayor’s executive committee. I see no reason what-soever for the mayor to place anyone on the executive committee who does not fully support him. That would be akin to Prime Minister Stephen Harper or Premier Kathleen Wynne placing a New Democrat in their cabinets. The fact that not a single councillor from Toronto-

East York Community Council sits or has sat on the executive committee since 2010 confirms my reference to provincial and federal cabinets. Out of 12 councillors representing those wards, only Mary Fragedakis might have an outside chance of being considered. The other 11 councillors all proudly claim leftist roots. Why would any politician surround themselves with the enemy? Mayor Rob Ford has already swallowed the bitter pill through Karen Stintz that it is not always a good idea to keep

I see no reason what-soever for the mayor to place anyone on the executive committee who does not fully support him. your friends close and your enemies even closer. It is just too bad that there are so few conservatives on council from which Ford can select from. But, that is par for the course as it is usually the people who are “socially engaged” that run for any political office, eventually.

Ford needs to surround himself with people who believe in his mandate and who are stricter conservatives than he is. In that way, he may even be able to take on the appearance of being “inclusive” by comparison. Toronto is spending annually a billion dollars more than it actually needs to run and manage this city, simply due to the leftist agendas of the past 15 years. What Ford does not need is someone on his executive that loves to spend public money. Clifford J. Layne

Subway growth the necessary tonic for ailing transit system To the editor: Re: ‘Smart commute: ideas needed,’ Editorial, Feb. 28. In the real world, Toronto is about 30 to 40 years behind the times for

implementing new transportation needs. Your solutions are a dream that will never happen. No matter what the TTC may dream up or suggest, changes to people’s daily routines are

more or less fixed to their job requirements. This great city of ours needs to quadruple the amount of subways to encompass the greater area of Toronto, for example two or three more east-

west lines and the same for north-south directions. This is the only sane way to go. Let’s totally reject the former TTC chair Adam Giambrone ideas as he is out in left field. W.D. Adamson

My view is people who send that kind of anonymous smut have their own issues. They might want to get some help and they’re cowards. – MPP David Zimmer

“It is a distasteful thing by somebody who has obviously got some problems. It’s a nasty piece of smut,” he said. “It’s obviously somebody who has got some issue with Jews. My view is people who send that kind of anonymous smut have their own issues. They may want to get some help and they’re cowards.” Zimmer said the card did not leave him feeling threatened or fearful. In addition to the police, his office alerted legislative security at Queen’s Park and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. Len Rudner, the centre’s

director of community relations and outreach, said he’s not surprised the card was sent anonymously. “This is the equivalent of crawling from under a rock in the morning, peeing on somebody, and crawling back before you can be caught,” he said, adding the sentiment of the card is contemptible. Rudner joked the cardsender went to time and expense to buy and mail a card containing an immature message to Zimmer’s office. “The amount of time to... achieve this level of clarity, they may have had to buy five or six cards to get the message just right,” he said. “It’s contemptible and laughable.” The Jewish community does not need to waste any more time worrying about the incident, Rudner said. “I feel much more comfortable saying this is a silly eruption of a silly mind,” he said.

>>>from page 1 The envelope did not contain a return address. Staff Sgt. Frank Partridge said the police are taking the matter seriously. “When police are called about hate crimes like this, we are relentless in tracking down these people,” he said. “I think that’s a hate crime.” The message may appear juvenile but often hate crimes suspects are “complete morons” who are not well-spoken, Partridge said. “They go with what they’ve got going through their peanut brains,” he said. Although a stamp issued by Canada Post would be a national issue, Zimmer, a provincial politician, is wondering whether the culprit targetted him because he has a name that sounds possibly Jewish. Zimmer is not Jewish. He called the card offensive, a piece of garbage and juvenile.

City crews are out in double the usual numbers this week to patch and repair potholes on Toronto’s streets. Nearly 100 personnel (or 25 to 30 crews) will be out on the streets this week and in the coming weeks, the chair of the city’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee announced last week. “With the freeze-thaw cycles that have taken place this past winter, there is always an increase in the number of potholes on our roads,” Don Valley East Councillor Denzil MinnanWong said in a statement late last week. “Our crews work hard throughout the winter, when not involved in snow operations, to fix potholes in order to prevent the situation from worsening in the spring.” Potholes are created when water penetrates the top layer of asphalt through cracks in the road. After that moisture

Reporting tips: • Call 311 • Provide the precise location of the pothole (nearest cross streets, street address if possible) • Provide the exact location within the roadway where the pothole is located • Estimate the size of the pothole freezes and expands, sections of the pavement are forced up, and the weight of vehicles going over those sections of road breaks the pavement and the asphalt is forced out. Potholes are more frequent in the spring, after the freeze/thaw action following winter. With conditions expected to become drier and more favourable this week, crews will make more permanent

repairs to roadways by pouring hot asphalt onto the road, raking it into potholes, then tamping the asphalt down and smoothing it out until the road surface is improved. Over the last three years, the City of Toronto has repaired an average of 200,000 potholes per year at a cost of about $25 per pothole – spending approximately $5 million per year to fix potholes. While city staff usually repair potholes within five days of them being reported, requests are prioritized based on the amount of traffic on the road and the severity of the pothole. Residents are asked to call 311 to report potholes, so that crews can be assigned to fix them. Where are the troublesome potholes in North York? Layton film packs emotional punch david nickle the city be credited to the eerilyaccurate impersonations by Rick Roberts as Layton, and Sook-Yin Lee as Chow. For those of us who’ve spent time with Layton and Chow, watching the couple’s last months and earlier days re-enacted so uncannily is extraordinarily moving. It will be curious to see how the film is received by viewers outside the bubble of Toronto, and national politics. Because like it or not, Jack is more than a film about a politician. Coming less than two years after Layton’s death, when Layton’s successor Thomas Mulcair is aiming to be prime minister in 2015, and Chow is likely considering a run for mayor in Toronto a year earlier, Jack is something of a rallying call for progressively inclined voters. This, of course, is an

extension of what Layton clearly intended when he handed off his death-bed letter to Chow, and the rest of the country, with that stirring call toward optimism and love and kindness. It is also an extension of his detailed instructions, delivered earlier in that same letter, telling his party how best to mobilize in the months following his death. It’s tempting to be cynical on that basis and dismiss Jack as nothing more than an exercise in publicly funded NDP propaganda. It would be easier to do that if the sometimes hokey idealism depicted in the film weren’t so accurate a reflection of how it manifested in the real lives of Layton and Chow; if the story of a generally decent, earnest and publicly motivated political couple who finally won and then lost again, weren’t the story we’d all lived through just two years past.

n a few days, those of us so inclined will have an opportunity to relive the summer of 2011, when Jack Layton, the first New Democrat federal Opposition leader and almost prototypical progressive Toronto politician, succumbed to cancer. It was emotionally wrenching then; watching the new telefilm Jack, it is nearly as wrenching now. The film, screened for the family, supporters and some media earlier this week, airs Sunday night on CBC. Jack is far from perfect. it paints an at-points absurdly sunny picture of the very political life Jack Layton and Olivia Chow led together, and for a biopic offers frustratingly few clues about the things that contributed to Layton’s politics and political drive. As my companion at the screening pointed out, there’s no “rosebud” moment in Jack. With that said: The telefilm packs an emotional punch. Much of that can

Centre donates $1.4 million >>>from page 1 3,000 missing and thousands homeless. People are still living in temporary housing and face years of hardship before their communities fully recover, Hosaki told The Mirror. She saw the conditions first-hand last month during a trip to Japan, which included visiting universities that will benefit from the foundation’s fund. “The cleanup has gone pretty well, but now it’s rebuilding. And the human cost is enormous,” Hosaki said. That’s where the centre’s additional $1.4 million, on top of the initial $100,000, comes in. Collected from residents and businesses over the last two years, the donations

will help young people in the communities of Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima pursue education they would not have been able to afford otherwise. The money is being directed to three initiatives. T h e f i r s t i s t o t h re e regional government funds established to assist the educational needs of children affected by the disaster. Second, 15 university scholarships of $5,000 each are being established this year and nine scholarships of $5,000 each will be set up in subsequent years until the funds are used up. Third, a $15,000 grant is being donated to a Hope for Youth program set up by the Canadian embassy in Japan. The fund allows Japanese

youth to come to Canada for six-month periods to enhance their language and cultural skills. “We’re really thrilled to be able to do this, to help the children in the area,” Hosaki said. The foundation is grateful for donations that have poured in for relief efforts over the last two years, she said. “We didn’t know what to expect (in donations), but the outpouring of support was overwhelming,” she said. Donations were raised through a variety of efforts, from children selling cookies to corporate contributions, Hosaki said.

Residents had another opportunity last week to share their vision for a redeveloped and transit-centred Eglinton Avenue. Design the Future of Eglinton held its second of three workshops seeking feedback on ways of transforming the avenue when a future light rail transit line (LRT) is completed. Co-sponsored by Metrolinx and the City of Toronto, the event at the Noor Cultural Centre, 123 Wynford Dr., gave residents the chance to examine stops and infrastructure designs belonging to the eastern portion of the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown LRT. That part of the Crosstown will travel largely at street level between Don Mills Road and Kennedy Station. Like the first workshop in York one week earlier, residents were asked to contemplate in separate workshops how the avenue could accommodate future transit-oriented development to complement the Crosstown. Joan Davidson said she wanted to see less street parking at the intersection of Eglinton and Laird Drive through which the LRT will pass in a dedicated lane in the centre of street. “There’s too much parking anyway,” said Davidson. “What about a bike lane?” Ole Calderon suggested British style “subways” as a way to provide underground

Urban planner Sharzhad Davoudi-Strike leads a working group through a planning exercise during the Design the Future of Eglinton public workshop Feb. 26 at the Noor Cultural Centre. The interactive event allowed residents to provide feedback on development opportunities along Eglinton Avenue to coincide with the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown light rail line currently under construction.

access to the surface stop platforms without having to face traffic. “You would avoid the issue of people darting across traffic when they’re getting on or off the vehicle,” said Calderon, who grew up in Scarborough. Sp o k e s p e r s o n Ja m i e Robinson said Metrolinx, which is co-ordinating construction of the Crosstown, would look into the issue. “We’ll look at various ways pedestrians can access the stops whether it’s through crosswalks or traffic lights to make it safer,” said Robinson. He said the LRT will have a right-of-way against all traffic and will travel on separate traffic signals. Cars wanting to make left turns would be

limited to major intersections only. “The focus is on light rail transit,” said Robinson. “We don’t want to have it held up because of vehicular traffic.” City spokesperson Stephen Schijns said the workshops were designed to show what was possible – and not – when it comes to redeveloping Eglinton. “People are full of ideas,” said Schijns. “Amidst all the different constraints and trade-offs they’ve been very free and flexible with their notions.” For more information on the Designing the Future of Eglinton workshop series visit www.toronto.ca/eglinton

‘Jacob and Jack’ links generations in comedy

J

ames Sherman’s comedy Jacob and Jack keeps the audience on its toes as it jumps back and forth between two generations. Backstage scenes depicting Jacob Sherminsky, a star of the Yiddish theatre in the 1930s, are folded in with scenes of his grandson, Jack Shore, some 75 years later. Jack is preparing a special one-night-only performance that pays tribute to his grandfather, and we witness a number of parallels between the lives and the behaviors of both sets of performers. The first half of the play chronicles the back-stage chaos as the actors prepare for their respective performances. The second half takes place after the reportedly disastrous presentations with a good deal of door-slamming as the characters dash in and

mark andrew lawrence front row centre

out of the three on-stage dressing rooms. In the title roles, Jerrold Karch creates two distinct characterizations: the flamboyant Jacob whose passion for the theatre is matched only by his passion for his leading ladies, and the dedicated Jack, who faces his own challenges in both his profession and his marriage. Leah Charney portrays the wives of both Jacob and Jack, pointing out that both men essentially married the same girl. She brings just a hint of resigned acceptance to the role of Leah Sherminsky – knowing of her husband’s many infidelities – and a contemporary fire to the role of Jack’s wife Lisa. Richard Hoffman doubles as Jacob’s tenacious agent and Jack’s vigilant stage manager, Abe.

Daniel Staseff portrays the first generation’s efficient and eager-to-please stage manager taking a different approach to each personality he meets. Staseff also appears in the contemporary scenes as Moishe, a young ambitious performer anxious to make a good impression. In this latter role he has some particularly fine scenes with Nicole Marie McCafferty as Robin, the nervous ingénue. McCafferty also appears as Rachel, the object of Jacob’s attempted conquest in the earlier scenes. The actress finds similarities in the roles that help her establish and maintain the two very different characters. Gloria Valentine in the role of Esther provides the story with the missing link that connects the two generations. Her sparkling performance

as the stage mother Hannah in the earlier scenes is full of delicious little touches that light up the stage. Ari Weisberg has worked with the cast and crew, particularly lighting designer Sylvia Farr, to ensure the split-second timings and costume changes are executed with military precision. You do have to pay attention but it proves worthwhile as the comedy builds to a riotous conclusion. Teatron’s production of Jacob and Jack plays in the Studio theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts through Sunday. For tickets, visit www. teatrontheatre.com or call the box office at 416733-0545. Toronto home sales decline in February Greater Toronto Area (GTA) realtors reported 5,759 sales through the TorontoMLS system in February 2013 – a decline of 15 per cent in comparison to February 2012. It should be noted that 2012 was a leap year with one extra day in February. A 28 day yearover-year sales comparison resulted in a lesser decline of 10.5 per cent. The average selling price for February 2013 was $510,580 – up two per cent in comparison to February 2012. “The share of sales and dollar volume accounted for by luxury detached homes in the City of Toronto was lower this February compared to last. This contributed to a more modest pace of overall average price growth for the GTA as a whole,” says Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) President Ann Hannah. “Stricter mortgage lending guidelines that precluded government backed mortgages on homes sold for over one million dollars and the City of Toronto’s additional upfront land transfer tax arguably played a role in the slower pace of luxury detached home sales.”

$599,900 The MLS HPI Composite Benchmark price covering all major home types eliminates fluctuations in price growth due to changes in sales mix. The Composite Benchmark price was up by more than three per cent on a year-over-year basis in February. “We will undoubtedly experience some volatility in price growth for some market segments in 2013,” says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis. “However, months of inventory in the lowrise market segment will remain low, resulting in average price growth above three per cent for the TREB market area this year. Our current average price forecast is $515,000 for all home types combined in 2013.” –TREB

Toronto pedestrians urged to Do the Bright Thing RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Toronto police and GO Transit have launched a safety campaign encouraging pedestrians to wear bright clothing in an effort to reduce collisions with motorists. Po l i c e s p o k e s p e r s o n Const. Hugh Smith said he and his team distributed brochures and reflective key tags to approximately 4,000 GO Transit commuters as part of the Do the Bright Thing awareness campaign that launched Monday at Union Station. The one-week campaign encourages pedestrians to wear bright or reflective clothing to increase their visibility in busy traffic areas. According to Smith, a fouryear veteran of the police traffic services department, 100 people die annually in the province due to colli-

sions with motorists – 25 per cent of them in Toronto. He believes the vast majority of such accidents are preventable if pedestrians are more visible to cars and refrain from distractions in heavy traffic areas. “We don’t want to be told we’re doing something wrong,” said Smith late Monday morning from Union Station. “But from my side of it we get a lot of pedestrians who don’t adhere to the rules. So we’re just saying to be alert, be aware and be responsible for your movement.”

as it should be Private Elementary & Secondary School Montessori Casa (Ages 3-6) Discover Bond!

He said the campaign is directed at pedestrians and motorists alike and people should not feel they are being unfairly blamed for accidents involving cars – six to seven of which are reported daily in Toronto. Walking advocate Josh Fullan welcomed the campaign but said it should be combined with more definitive measures such as reducing speed limits, as recommended by a 2012 pedestrian safety report authored by the province’s chief coroner. “Telling people to wear bright clothing is one thing but you have to couple that with other, more effective strategies,” he said.

How do you spell relief line? Stintz seeks answers One possible alignment would extend from Don Mills-Eglinton DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com With details of the proposed downtown relief line still not finalized, Toronto Transit Commission chair Karen Stintz thinks the city should think about something more fundamental. Its name. “I think there is a desire to rename the downtown relief line something more reflective of what it will actually do, which is not to serve downtown, but actually serve suburban commuters in the suburbs,” said Stintz. “I think there is a general view that line needs to be renamed.” Stintz made the comments at the Feb. 28 meeting of Toronto’s Planning and Growth Management Committee, as it was debat-

ing the Toronto Transit Commission’s Downtown Rapid Transit Expansion Study’s strategic plan. The plan is going forward in concert with Metrolinx’ Big Move plan, and the cornerstone of it is the currently named Downtown Relief Line. While its precise alignment hasn’t yet been finalized, it would loop south from a station on Danforth Av e n u e — P a p e a n d Donlands stations are both candidates — connect with the Yonge-University line at Union Station, and loop back north to meet with a station on the Bloor line. The TTC study envisions four possible alignments: one from Pape to St. Andrew station; another from Pape to Dundas West Station through St. Andrew; a third extend-

ing from Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue East south through Pape to St. Andrew; and a fourth continuing that line to Dundas West Station. While all of the routes would increase subway density in the downtown core, Stintz argues that the increased capacity downtown will make it easier for commuters from suburban communities to make it downtown, by taking pressure off the Yonge-University line. Committee chair Peter Milczyn quipped that the line through the city’s downtown ought to be called “the suburban service line.”
