“It’s really great,” said Muhammad Yunus, a coach with ProAction Hockey League, which operates out of the Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue area arena. “I freaked out when I found out (the arena made the Top 10).”
Yunus, who nominated the arena, noted the building has heating issues, the roof is leaking, bleachers are lacking, and the women’s change room has outgrown its current size. “It’s not in the greatest condition right now,” he said. “One hundred thousand dollars would go a long way.” >>>voting, page 14

Spending 12 hours on elliptical machine for a good cause Faith Gold “on top of the world” after participating in YMCA Megathon challenge fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Save for a pair of sore knees, Faith Gold felt “on top of the world” after spending half a day on the elliptical machine for the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s Megathon challenge this past Saturday. Starting Feb. 28 and wrapping up last Saturday, the Megathon challenge was held at eight fitness centres across the GTA, including the North York location at Bayview and Sheppard avenues, where Gold spent 12 hours on the elliptical. “It was fantastic,” said the 44-year-old. This was Gold’s seventh year taking part in the challenge, and fourth year spending 720 minutes on the machine. “I went on at 6 a.m. and got off at 6 p.m.,” she said. “I worked 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. the next day.” Now in its 10th year, the Megathon challenge raises funds that provide children,
teens, adults, and families access to YMCA of Greater Toronto programs and services, regardless of their financial situation, through a series of fun fitness challenges involving staff and members. Last year, the challenge raised more than $420,000. Gold, an 18-year employee of the North York YMCA, said she took a five minute break from the elliptical every hour, which she spent either eating, using the washroom, or interacting with people who were cheering her on, she said. And when it was all over, she celebrated with family for a well-deserved dinner of chicken, potatoes, rice, and salad. Gold, who was diagnosed with a learning disability as a child, said her fitness feats, along with life accomplishments, are especially rewarding, considering she was told from a young age she wouldn’t amount to much, she said. “I was told I would never move out on my own, I would

never have a job,” Gold said, adding she not only has a job, but also lives alone, attended college, and wrote a book titled Gotta Have Faith about her life and not letting disability get in the way of achievement. “People assume because you have a disability you can’t
accomplish anything. Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Gold began her Megathon training in October, starting out at two hours a day on the elliptical machine and working her way up to eight hours by the end of January. She also incorporated biking and walking into her regimen.
“For the first two years (of the challenge) I did three hours on the bike,” she said, adding she worked with a trainer leading up to her first Megathon, but now trains on her own. “The third year I did three hours on the elliptical, and for the last four years I’ve done
12 hours. And I’m doing it again next year.” Gold, who used to work in child minding for the North York YMCA and has since moved onto laundry services, has raised more than $13,000 for the Megathon challenge over the years, she said. Helen Barbalias, senior development officer of events for the YMCA of Greater Toronto, said the Megathon includes a variety of fitness challenges, focusing on swimming, ping pong, and dancing, to name a few. “It’s a really great way to build awareness,” she said, adding this year’s fundraising goal is $400,000. Erin Smith, program manager at the North York YMCA, said she joined Gold on the elliptical for the first and last hours of her 12 hour stint. “She looked amazing the day of,” Smith said. “She diligently trains for the event and follows an intensive plan. She really motivates the staff and is committed to doing the best she can do and to raise funds.” Donations for the Megathon challenge will be accepted online until Thursday, March 31 at www.ymcamegathon.org

Police believe a suspicious weekend incident in Brookbanks Park is tied to two February assaults in the same area.
Police said a woman was walking her dog near Three Valleys and Laurentide drives Saturday, March 5 when a man began following her around 9:30 a.m. The dog’s barks caused the man to leave the area, investigators said. Police believe the same man is responsible for two assaults in the Brookbanks Park area Monday, Feb. 1. Police said a man approached two women, aged 20 and 33, from behind around 2:30 p.m. and assaulted them. The women then fled the area.
FROM CONCEPT
The man in the weekend incident is described as black, 5’10” to 6 feet tall, with a thin build. Police are asking the public to be vigilant in this area of Brookbanks Park. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416808-3300.

Spring forward, and make road safety a priority L
ike every year just before daylight saving time, there’s a reminder to set the clocks forward one hour. But during this time of year, there should be another equally, if not more, important reminder for drivers: watch out for pedestrians. The extra hour of sunlight and the coinciding warmer temperatures outside are sure to result in more people out and about enjoying everything the city has to offer. Residents will be populating patios and parks again as the spring-like weather entices them out of their winter slumber. And expect to see more children, too, as students look to our view participate in activities outside of school during March Break Everyone next week. One traffic fatality is one too needs to pay many; as recently as last Friday, attention a pedestrian was fatally struck near Queen and Jarvis streets downtown. In 2015, there were nearly 40 pedestrian deaths of the 64 total traffic fatalities, according to Toronto police. As the police note in their “do the bright thing” pedestrian safety YouTube message, road safety is a shared responsibility and all road users have an important role to play. “It is clear that all of these traffic fatalities were preventable,” adds Supt. Gord Jones of Toronto police Traffic Services in the video. So for pedestrians, be alert and get rid of any distractions – like listening to music or a podcast on your cellphone – when crossing the road. The same goes for drivers with distracted driving still a major issue. If the fines set for driving and texting aren’t enough of a deterrent, take a look again at the sobering statistics of traffic fatalities. Here’s a reminder for drivers: as of this year, motorists must yield the entire road to pedestrians when approaching crosswalks and school crossings, and wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the road. Both pedestrians and drivers will do well to slow down, and with the imminent arrival of spring, just breathe in the fresh air and relax.

Tory puts good face on broken promises Mayor John Tory started Tuesday morning with a visit to the Regent Park Aquatic Centre. Well, he started the public part of Tuesday morning in Regent Park. It was 10 a.m. when he showed up with Councillor James Pasternak, the community development and recreation committee chair, and Councillor Pam McConnell in tow. If his publicly touted schedule held true, this was something closer to the noon-hour for him, as Tory famously likes to start work sixish. It is one of the things voters are said to like about him. Tory would do well to remind voters of the reasons they like him. This week, he has had to manage a fairly significant retreat from the argument he’d made to voters in 2014, to persuade them to cast their vote his way. Tory had spent the election swearing up and down that he would deliver a fast and affordable heavy rail rapid transit line called SmartTrack, with 15 new stops along a
david nickle the city 53-kilometre route crossing the city, and had scoffed at naysayers who raised questions about whether the plan was even possible. On Monday, the longawaited report from city manager Peter Wallace, looking at a broad range of public transit options for Toronto, arrived with a thud. Wallace’s report deals with a number of things, but deep in the middle of it is a recognition that Tory’s SmartTrack plan as sold to the public simply isn’t possible. What is possible? No more than eight stations financed by the city, to enhance existing plans by Metrolinx to expand GO service along the rail lines. And no heavy rail in the west end through Etobicoke, but light rail instead. The overall transit plan laid out by Wallace in his detailed report to the executive committee is, in many respects, a
vast improvement on Tory’s SmartTrack plans, and on Tuesday morning Tory tried to make the case he is, in fact, delivering more, not less. “This optimized plan will provide more transit for Toronto than I promised in the election,” he said. “In this case I’ll be delivering more overall.” It is technically true: to paper over the deficiencies in Tory’s plan, staff have recommended far more public transit in some areas; the downtown relief line that was notably not a priority in Tory’s campaign is in, and more light rail along the Eglinton Crosstown line. But it has undeniably scaled back the specific transit improvements Tory promised in all those SmartTrack stations, and the three-stop Scarborough subway that will now be reduced to a single stop. Will anyone care about these broken promises? Tory seemed to think they wouldn’t. And he may be right. Still, it was either good
strategy or good luck that a day before the Wallace report landed on the desks of executive committee members, Tory was able to make the sort of announcement he’s been fond of. As early as next fall, Tory promised, it will be easier to sign up for recreation programs than it is now, and next year, the antiquated computer system that keeps kids out of city summer camps and swimming lessons will be entirely replaced. That sounds like an entirely achievable promise – as achievable as pushing the TTC to sell tokens using Interac machines, or towing cars parked illegally during rush hour, other incremental but noticeable improvements that Tory has brought about. In times like these, that is something I imagine our early-bird mayor would like us to remember.

Women get their hair done in support of HIV/AIDS awareness and access to resources.
Support BrAIDS for AIDS The BrAIDathon and Hair Styling Show is happening for a third year in Weston in support of an organization that promotes HIV/AIDS awareness and access to resources. The event will happen at Ujima House, 1901 Weston Rd., Unit 18, Saturday, March 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who attend will have their hair done by professional hair dressers. Proceeds will support the BrAIDS for AIDS Foundation and its pro-
grams across the Greater Toronto Area including a new entrepreneurship-focused hair dresser program for African, Caribbean and black young women, another for young men in the prison system, and the organization’s program combating violence against women. Admission to the event is free. The cost for services is as follows: • Basic braids: $60 to $100 • Half to full weave: $60 to $80 • Twists: $70 to $100 • Crochet braids: $70 to $100
• Cane rows: $30 to $60 There will be giveaways at the event and swag bags for the first 10 appointments, the organizers say. BrAIDS for AIDS was founded in 2008. It promotes HIV/AIDS awareness and access to resources for black communities through culturally appropriate practices. For more information, visit www. braidsforaids.com

Yorkview Public School didn’t capture the grand prize, but it did receive $12,000 from a national contest to help get kids moving, which it will earmark for its Outdoor Play Enrichment Program. The Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue area school was one of 10 finalists in GoodLife Kids Foundation’s Win 4 Kids contest, which gave away a total of $100,000 to programs helping Canadian youth get active. St. Jerome School in Regina, Saskatchewan, took home the top prize of $25,000 when the results were announced Saturday. Yorkview was one of three $12,000 winners, and three prizes each of $8,000 and $5,000 were also awarded. Winners were decided based on online votes. “We were very excited to be part of such a fun and worthwhile endeavour,” said Yorkview principal Robert Radovski. “Thank you everyone for voting, and promoting our efforts with your friends, family, and co-workers. Our success in this project is due to the great partnership between the school, our school council, and the greater Yorkview community.” The junior kindergarten to Grade 5 school saw its play structure closed off last spring due to disrepair, which had deteriorated to the point it was no longer safe for the 490 students to play on, Radovski previously told The Mirror. After putting in a replacement request to the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), an amount
of $75,000 was committed for a new play structure, with the cost also covering resurfacing the play area, installing drainage and the planting of new trees. The school then decided to hold a fundraiser, with the goal of raising $25,000 to add to the amount approved by the TDSB.
“
Our ultimate goal is to get Yorkview students physically active, and promote a healthy lifestyle with family. – Robert Radovski, Yorkview principal
The Yorkview Play Structure Committee came up with a structure wish list, which includes twisty slides, a rock climbing wall and monkey bars. The fundraiser, which began in the fall and wrapped up Dec. 11, raised $11,000. The new play structure should be up and running by this spring, Radovski said. With the Win 4 Kids grant, Yorkview plans to purchase equipment for lacrosse, cricket, softball, soccer, flag football, ultimate frisbee, golf, tennis and track and field, he said. “Our ultimate goal is to get Yorkview students physically active, and promote a healthy lifestyle with family,” Radovski said.
North York woman participating in OneWalk to Conquer Cancer for 10th year FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com On Tuesday, females the world over were celebrated for International Women’s Day. Though an influential woman in Lori Goldenberg’s life is no longer with her, she is never far from mind, and come September, as she’s done for the past nine years, her mother, Carol Solomons, will be front and centre when her daughter takes part in the Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefitting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. When Solomons died in 2005 at age 64 from gall bladder cancer, Goldenberg decided she wanted to do her part for the centre that treated her mother. “My friend had done the walk the
year before,” said the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue area resident. “I wanted to participate. I didn’t just want to sit back and do nothing. My mom was my hero. I’m walking for all the women and men diagnosed with cancer.” Goldenberg, who is captain of her OneWalk team, The Breast Walkers Ever, has had her three daughters, Brooke, 21, Stephanie, 19, and Jordana, 17, take part in the walk over the years, she said. “They were there when my mom got sick, when she was at the hospital, and at the end,” Goldenberg said. “It was important for me to walk, and important for them.” Funds raised through the Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer support personalized cancer medicine at the Princess Margaret Cancer
Centre, which enables clinicians and researchers to detect cancers earlier, diagnose with more precision, target treatment for each patient, and support patients and their families. To date, Goldenberg has raised about $40,000 during OneWalk, which is designed as a 25-kilometre walk through city streets. This year’s event will be held Sept. 10. In 2015, OneWalk raised more than $7.5 million. “It’s an incredible experience,” she said of the event. “Twenty-five kilometres goes by so fast. People hold signs up and cheer you on, and my husband (Shawn) always meets me at the end with flowers. I hope to do (OneWalk) as long as I can. I can’t sit back.” Visit www.onewalk.ca for more information.

Dear Sam: I would like to thank you for helping us sell my mother’s home. As you know the house had not been taken care of for nearly 2 years and was in much need of some TLC. We were not in a position to invest money into the house before putting it up for sale. We were a little nervous that we might have difficulty selling the house, because it did not show well. You, however, assured us that we could get fair market value for the house and did not discourage us from asking that price. Indeed you managed to find us the right buyer in good time. This sale was somewhat emotional for us. For this reason I appreciate all the advice you gave us, your guidance throughout, and your reassurance that everything would work out well in the end, which it did. At all times you were professional, prompt, and just a phone call/text away. I really cannot think of anything more one could possibly ask from one’s real estate agent. You did a fantastic and complete job. Thank you. I would gladly recommend you to anyone interested in selling a home in this city. Sincerely, Ingrid Conner BSc, MBA

>>>from page 1 As a Top 10 finalist, the rink will automatically receive $25,000, which would go towards things like a water fountain, which doesn’t currently exist, and a television screen with information in different languages for the largely immigrant community, but the grand prize is needed to really make muchneeded improvements, he said. “We really want to upgrade the arena,” Yunus said. Na m e d a f t e r A n g e l a James, who was dubbed the ‘Wayne Gretzky of women’s hockey’ and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010, the arena also offers public skating and is the training ground for Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute hockey players and several other nearby leagues, Yunus said. Now, Yunus, along with the arena’s players, are hoping to gather enough online votes in the East region to make it to the Top 2 to guarantee the $100,000 grand prize. Voting will begin Sunday, March 13 at 9 a.m., and will end at 11:59 p.m. Monday, March 14. The two communities that receive the
most votes in each of the East and West regions will each receive $100,000 and will move on to the Top 2 final round of voting, which will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, March 20 and wraps up at 11:59 p.m. Monday, March 21. The grand prize winner, which will be announced Saturday, April 2, will be awarded an NHL pre-season game hosted in their community, $100,000 to be used in arena upgrades, a national broadcast on Sportsnet, and the Kraft Hockeyville title. “We’re really trying to get the word out,” Yunus said of voting. “We’re trying to let everybody know.” In his submission, Yunus noted many Flemingdon families have never heard of ice hockey in their home c o u n t r i e s , y e t t h e y ’v e embraced Canada’s unofficial sport. “Unfortunately, immigration has meant that many of these youth have never been given the opportunity to play ice hockey themselves, or even learn to skate,” he wrote. “Yet, the raw passion the community have for the sport would never let you believe that this is the case. Hockey has formed a crucial
element in the lives of these first-generation Canadians as they discover their identity within the ever-changing Canadian demographic...as a priority neighbourhood within Toronto, the arena provides a safe space for youth within the community to stay active within the winter. The opportunity to host a pre-season NHL game will increase interest in the sport, especially among the older generation. Many of the youth in this community may never have the opportunity to attend an NHL game, so bringing the NHL to them will let them see their favourite players up close for the first time, and will increase their love of the sport.” Kelly Fleming, marketing manager of Kraft Hockeyville, said one of the program’s goals is to protect the future of hockey in Canada. “Co m m u n i t y b u i l d s hockey and hockey builds community,” she said. “It’s exciting to see the passion and commitment. We received three times the amount of applications than we did last year. We encourage everyone to vote as often as possible.” To vote, visit KHV2016. ca

Platinum celebrating 25 years with $25,000 home makeover giveaway Platinum Home Design & Renovations has been providing professional service and top quality windows and doors in the GTA since 1990. The company celebrated its 25th anniversary in October last year, and to keep the celebration going, is offering up a $25,000 home makeover giveaway. “We want to do this to thank our loyal customers who made our business what it is,” says owner Gus George. The majority of their business — nearly 75 per cent — is made up of repeat clients and referrals. “We really put ourselves in our customers’ shoes, trying to understand what they want and what they need, and that’s what we try to give them,” says George. What that means is spending time educating the customers on the different options available, allowing them to come to an educated decision. “We take a completely different approach from other companies and our referrals speak to that,” says George. Platinum is committed to a uniform standard of excellence in service and workmanship. The team even has its own high quality brand of windows - Enerview. Platinum only carries what George believes is the best product in the industry and backs that up with a 100 per cent lifetime guarantee on all windows.
Win a $25,000 home makeover from Platinum!
The windows also come with a “Neat” Glass coating. This coating uses UV rays and rain water to repel and remove dirt. Though it’s not unique to the company, Platinum is one of the only window companies that doesn’t charge an extra fee. “Neat” glass is always included. A full house of Enerview windows and doors is included in the $25,000 home makeover Platinum is giving away by random draw. Fill out the ballot at www.platinumrenovations.com, no purchase necessary. “We won’t know what the customer is looking for until we choose the winner in December, but it could be new patio doors, a new front entry, and completely new windows,” says George. If the winner has no need for a renovation, they can transfer the prize to a friend or family member. Visit www.platinumrenovations.com or call 416-609-0102 for more information.

No cause yet in hydro vault fire The TTC says it’s still trying to determine what caused a massive power outage leading to a lengthy shutdown last week. A fire at a hydro vault resulted in rows of dead streetcars and the shuttering of a lengthy stretch of the Yonge line during rush hour. Mayor John Tory told media the fire was caused by a cave-in of the vault roof, said to have been the result of unknown vehicles driving on the Richmond Street sidewalk above. TTC officials have not confirmed that account, which the mayor said was related to him by CEO Andy Byford. Stay tuned as the investigation into the fire’s root cause continues. DAVENPORT RESIDENTS warn of exodus There was much scepticism expressed for claims from a residents group that the Davenport Overpass will result in a mass exodus from the neighbourhood. The project, which Metrolinx wants to build to
w
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT boost GO train traffic, has taken heat from Davenport residents. At a community meeting last week, the vocal antioverpass group, Options for Davenport, said 40 per cent of the residents it canvassed vowed to move out of the neighbourhood if the bridge is built. That claim was met with doubt and derision by Twitter users, some of whom promised to buy property in Davenport should some become available as a result of the bridge. SNOWY BIKE LANES cyclists wirk
It was a mixed bag when it came to the city’s efforts to plow bike lanes during last week’s major snowstorm. Fifteen to 20 centimetres of snow fell on Toronto, leading to frustrating travel conditions. Some cyclists were quick to praise rapid efforts at clear-
ing bike lanes in the storm’s aftermath. But others brought attention to unplowed snow on lanes, including along the Bloor Viaduct. On College Street, cyclists reported unsafe conditions as many as two days after the storm. TO UNDERGO CONSTRUCTION wCOLLEGE
Get ready for some major construction work on College Street over the summer. The street will undergo major renovations starting in June with watermain upgrades from Lansdowne to Rideau avenues. To the east, TTC streetcar track replacement will take place at College and Bathurst streets from June 20 to July 22, and at Lansdowne from July 18 to Aug. 15. Streetscape improvements from mid-June to November and installation of new lighting in Little Italy from August until December are planned. Rahul Gupta is Metroland Media Toronto’s transit reporter.
