Councillors mourn passing of Rob Ford fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

North York councillors expressed sadness over the passing of former mayor Rob Ford, who died Tuesday, March 22, after an 18-month battle with an aggressive form of cancer. The controversial politician was 46. “My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all the friends,” said York Centre Councillor James Pasternak. “It’s obviously sad when you lose someone so young and with a young family. I knew him not only as a council colleague, but someone who cleared off his whole schedule to come to my father’s funeral. Despite political differences, it’s a sad day for his family and for City Hall.” Ford was first elected as an Etobicoke councillor in 2000 and successfully ran for mayor in 2010. He was forced to drop out of the 2014 mayoral race after he was diagnosed with pleomorphic liposarcoma after a tumour was found in his abdomen. Ford then ran for his former council seat instead. He underwent a 10-hour surgery to remove the tumour
last May, but new tumours on his bladder were discovered in October. Ford had been at Mount Sinai Hospital taking part in a clinical trial involving an innovative method using mice, implanting them sam tumour to help oncologists identify the best course of treatment for a patient by testing different drugs. Pasternak said he last spoke with Ford in the fall during a council session, with the conversation focused on Ford’s >>>HE, page 8

Keon’s autograph arrives four decades after Good Friday mass He was seven-years-old when his Dad pointed out famous hockey star in church fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Kevin McNamee remembers it like it was yesterday. It was 1972 and McNamee’s mother, Kathleen, thought it would be nice to celebrate Good Friday service at St. Michael’s Cathedral downtown instead of at St. Edwards Roman Catholic Church near Yonge Street and Churchill Avenue, where the family of eight typically attended. With his young mind wandering during the long service, McNamee thought he was in trouble when his father, Bernard, poked him in the ribs with his elbow. But in trouble the sevenyear-old boy was not - his father simply wanted to let his youngest child know Dave Keon, who was captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs at the time, was mere feet away. “My attention focused on him,” the longtime Willowdale resident recalled. “He was
standing in the aisle to the right of us, back one or two pews.” McNamee quickly formed a plan. With thoughts of what to say, with everything from asking for his autograph to praising his efforts against the Habs the previous night, young McNamee decided he would wait for the sign of peace to make his move. He would walk to where Keon was standing, stick his hand out, and say “Peace be with you, Mr. Keon.” But the fantasy would never become reality as, unbeknownst to McNamee, Good Friday is the one mass of the year that does not include the sign of peace. The boy watched in devastation as his hero, who won four Stanley Cups with the Leafs, lined up for communion and then disappeared from sight for good. “I was crushed,” he said. “Every Good Friday I would think about it.”
getting my hopes up.” Tw o w e e k s l a t e r, a manila envelope arrived at McNamee’s home, and inside was a signed picture of Keon with the words ‘peace be with you’ and a short note from the hockey legend saying how sorry he was they didn’t get to shake hands some 40 years earlier. ‘so excited’

Kevin McNamee holds up a framed, hand-written letter and photograph that he received from former Toronto Maple Leaf captain Dave Keon. McNamee had the rare opportunity to see Keon in church for Good Friday mass when he was just seven years old – but Keon left before he could get an autograph.
Four years ago, McNamee was at home with his laptop when he decided on a whim to write Keon, who turned 76 Tuesday, March 22, a letter
about the missed opportunity. After finding Keon’s Palm Beach, Florida, address on a fan website, McNamee
bought a stamp and dropped his letter in the mail. “I really wasn’t expecting that much,” he said. “I hoped he would respond, but I wasn’t
“I was so excited,” said McNamee, 51, who felt he had been transported back to his seven-year-old self. “He’s still a hero of mine. I really looked up to him as a kid. He played hard, but within the rules. He was a classy guy.” McNamee would often pretend he was Keon when playing road hockey as a kid, even writing the hockey great’s No. 14 on his gloves. And when he was older, he would fantasize about running into Keon in Florida during family vacations. But instead, he has a framed picture and personal message to now look at in his basement.
Top-10 Hockeyville finish worth $25,000 fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

Pro-Action hockey league play began last season at the Angela James Arena. A league coach entered the arena in this year’s Kraft Hockeyville contest.
In the end, Angela James Arena was outscored for the top Kraft Hockeyville prize. Though the Grenoble Drive arena made it to the Top 10 and therefore receives $25,000, they failed to gather enough online votes in the East region to make it to the Top 2 in order to clinch the $100,000 grand prize. The Flemingdon Park arena beat out a record-breaking 3,192 submissions this year to make it to the Top 10. The arena was not only the lone Toronto Top 10 finalist this
year, but marked the first time a city rink had ever made it this far in the competition’s decade long history. Muhammad Yunus, a coach with ProAction Hockey League, which operates out of the Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue area arena, said he, along with the submission team, feel proud to have made it this far in the competition. “We are hoping that the increased publicity around the arena and the community in general will allow the city to dedicate more resources to ensuring that our facilities are held to the same standard as
other Toronto communities,” he said. “Through this competition, we have seen a huge outpouring of support from all across the city and have even seen the mayor (John Tory) come out to promote the arena. “Despite not making the Top 2, we will continue to be active in the community and hope to slowly introduce more services.” Yunus, who nominated the arena for the Kraft Hockeyville competition, said a decision regarding what the $25,000 will be used for has yet to be made, but noted the team would like to install a water

fountain and do some roof repair. Named after Angela James, who was dubbed the ‘Wayne Gretzky of women’s hockey’ and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010, the arena also offers public skating and is the training ground for Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute hockey players and several other nearby leagues, Yunus said. The two arenas that snagged the Top 2 spots are Aréna St-Isidore in SaintIsidore, Quebec for the East, and Pat Duke Memorial Arena, Lumby, British Columbia for the West.

Remembering Rob Ford, man of the people T
here’s a reason Rob Ford was elected Toronto’s mayor in 2010, and it’s the same one that is now being expressed across the city as news of his death sinks in. At the age of 46, Ford lost his battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer Tuesday morning; family members were at his side at Mount Sinai Hospital. With his death comes an end to a controversial and, at times, bizarre run of Toronto politics. But unpacking all of that is for another day. Today, we need to mourn and pay our respects to a man who had a profound impact on the city he loved and the people who lived in it. While we remember Rob Ford, the politician, we must also our view remember him as a father who leaves a wife and two young chilHis love of dren, aged eight and 10. Our deep Toronto was condolences go out to them and to the entire Ford family. reciprocated From the first campaign he won as councillor in Etobicoke North back in 2000, Ford always had a populist “man of the people” persona. He was genuine with that, and people gravitated toward to it. Here was a guy who unapologetically loved his sports, and his barbecues. Many in the city saw themselves in him: the average guy who was going to stick it to the so-called “elites” who thought Toronto was theirs to rule. Many voters loved that. And they loved Rob Ford. He was unbeatable in every race he ran for councillor, and when he announced he would seek the mayor’s seat in 2010, many of those “elites” scoffed. But Ford knew what they didn’t – he had deep and loyal support from those who proudly called themselves members of Ford Nation. Some of his populist success was built on tapping into resentment by those who felt excluded by the megacity’s political system – particularly those in Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke, who felt they’d been treated as second-class citizens since amalgamation. Ford may have exploited that feeling. A feeling which resonated with him personally. Rob Ford was what he was, and he always fought hard for what he believed in. He will be greatly missed by the city that he loved.

column
Rob Ford: a lesson in not making assumptions I think I first met Rob Ford in former Etobicoke Councillor Doug Holyday’s office on the second floor of Toronto City Hall, back in 2000. Rob had just won an election up in Ward 2, and he’d come down to see Holyday, bringing along his big brother Doug before settling in. It’s funny, at first I thought Doug might be the new councillor – he was the aggressively friendly one, while Rob stood politely back: smiling a bit nervously, not saying much, rocking from one foot to the other. He was an easy guy to underestimate; an easy guy not to notice. And the first time we met, I did both. Mea culpa. Over the 16 years between his arrival at City Hall and his death in a hospital bed just a few hundred metres north and west of it, Ford taught me otherwise. He came to City Hall with two clear and simple objectives: if not to reduce the size of government here, then highlight where it was
david nickle the city overstuffed, and to provide customer service to his constituents. He did this both by taking lessons from his father, former Progressive Conservative MP and labelmaking entrepreneur Doug Ford Sr. He didn’t win votes at Toronto Council. But he did win votes in his northwestern Etobicoke ward, and then, improbably, across the entire city in 2010, and again in his Ward 2 stomping grounds in 2014. His simple, straightforward narrative caught on. It made him unbeatable, at least electorally. Of course, Rob Ford was entirely fallible, as beatable as anyone both politically and personally. For the first couple of years as mayor, Ford ran a tight ship on council, winning many votes and pushing his small
government agenda even when fiscal and organizational realities seemed to make that impossible. The vehicle registration tax was repealed; former mayor David Miller’s baby Transit City, cancelled; garbage collection west of Yonge Street was contracted out. In his first year, Ford used the last Miller-era budget surplus to orchestrate a property tax freeze. It all fell apart. But we know all about that. His plan to build a subway on Sheppard Avenue East didn’t survive council. A conflict of interest trial nearly cost Ford his job. A video of Ford smoking crack cocaine revealed a substance abuse problem of profound and humiliating depth, along with terrible displays of rage and racism and vulgarity that put Toronto in the crosshairs of international late-night television comedy. You could make a joke out of it, and many did. But really, it was sad and hurtful,
and at times very frightening and dangerous. And then there was the cancer. You can’t make a joke out of that. It tortured him for awhile, teased him with hope and, as is cancer’s wont, came back for what turned out to be the kill. The last time I talked with Rob Ford was a couple months ago, when he’d come back to City Hall in the midst of bouts of the chemotherapy that couldn’t save him. We did a little interview outside a committee room, and talked a bit. It was a nice conversation. He told me the doctors thought the chemo was working, that he was feeling pretty dragged out and often felt quite ill, but at least this time his hair wasn’t falling out. He took that as a good sign, and I agreed it might just be. Mea culpa.

‘He put up a very brave fight’: Counc. Pasternak >>>from page 1 struggle with cancer and the pain he was in. “He was also realistic about his chances (of survival),” Pasternak said. “He put up a very brave fight. He will be missed at City Hall.” An emotional York Centre Councillor Maria Augimeri was still processing the news when contacted by The North York Mirror. “I’m sad,” she said. “We weren’t political allies but it’s sad. No one should have to undergo his pain.” Augimeri described Ford as hard on the outside but a softie on the inside. “The outside shell was like armour but he had a soft side,” she said, recalling how she accompanied his young daughter to the washroom at an event because Ford didn’t have any female staff with him. She noted Ford was in pain when they chatted during a council meeting months ago. “I sat beside him and asked how he was doing,” Augimeri said. “He said he was OK, it hurts sometimes. He wasn’t comfortable in his own skin anymore.” Don Valley East Councillor
Don Valley East Councillor Shelley Carroll said the city is in mourning over Ford’s passing. “Rob had supporters in every part of the city,” she said. “It’s a big loss for the city.” Though they didn’t politically see eye to eye, Carroll said the loss of a colleague hits everyone. football pools

and Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong recalled Ford as a mayor who “really cared and loved the city and had a special connection with the public.” “He really represented people who felt city hall was not listening to them and did his best to keep his promises,” he said. “As mayor, he will be remembered for a guy who never lost touch with the
ordinary person. He would go across the city to look at a pothole. He had a special relationship with the average voter.” Minnan-Wong said he visited Ford in the hospital 10 days ago and knew his outlook was bleak. “He wasn’t doing very well, so (his passing) didn’t come as a complete surprise to me,” he said.
She remembered the city hall football pools Ford used to run, and Ford laughing off lighthearted jabs from colleagues. “I really hope his legacy will be his long enduring stretch over City Hall,” she said. Flags at City Hall, Metro Hall and Toronto civic centres have been lowered to half mast, and will remain lowered until the end of the day of Ford’s funeral. Books of condolence will be available at City Hall and at civic centres beginning Tuesday for staff and members of the public to express their condolences. An online book of condolence will also be available at http://cityoftorontocondolences.ca
Oriole Food Space officially reopened Though it softly re-opened in November, Oriole Food Space celebrated its official launch at Parkway Forest Community Centre Monday, March 21. The new space at 55 Forest Manor Rd. is one kilometre south of its former spot at Oriole Community Centre at Don Mills Road and Fairview Mall Drive, which opened in February 2013. Renovation work at Oriole Community Centre caused the Oriole Food Space, which operates in collaboration with North York Harvest Food Bank (NYHFB), Flemingdon Health Centre and Working Women Community Centre, to find a new home. The food space will con-
tinue to serve clients living in the M2H and M2J postal codes, bounded by Steeles Avenue, Victoria Park Avenue, Hwy. 401 and East Don Parkland. “It’s important to be able to serve that part of the community,” said Ryan Noble, executive director of NYHFB. “We wanted a location as close to Oriole (Community Centre) as we could find.” Oriole Food Space will be open Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m. (changing to 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning in April) and Fridays from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Clients can access the food bank once every two weeks. Besides offering a food
bank, Oriole Food Space will also runs free garden workshops and community kitchen programs. killed in parking lot wpedestrian
A woman is dead after being struck by a truck in a North York parking lot Tuesday. Emergency crews were called to the Leon’s parking lot at 10 Suntract Rd. southeast of Hwy. 401 and Hwy. 400 at 1:37 p.m. A Toronto Paramedic Services spokesperson said a female pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene. Police from traffic services are investigating the incident.
man wounded in shooting wyoung Police are looking to speak with anyone who has information regarding a shooting at a North York house party that wounded a young man. Police said the 19-year-old victim was shot at the party in the Bayview and Steeles avenues area Sunday, March 20, at 4:30 a.m. Investigators said a large number of people were in attendance when shots rang out. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-3200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.
Willowdale councillor John Filion wrote the book on Ford - literally DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Willowdale Councillor John Filion spent more than a year trying to get into former Mayor Rob Ford’s head, researching and writing a political biography/analysis of Ford and his phenomenon, The Only Average Guy. On March 22, Filion took a moment to consider the life of his subject, who succumbed to a long battle with cancer just hours earlier. “It was a very tragic life and a sadly very tragic death,” said Filion. “He never really had that second chance that everybody deserves in life, and I know he was ready for it. I talked to him just before he became ill again, I said, ‘Rob, you seemed like a totally different person’ and he said, ‘Yeah, I am.’ “He talked about having a new lease on life and two days later he got sick again.” Filion didn’t interview Ford for his book, and knew him mainly from a decade and a half sitting near one another on the floor of council. He admitted that the two hadn’t spoken much following Ford’s cancer diagnosis. “We talked a little bit,” said Filion. “Rob didn’t talk to a
lot of people about personal things. Rob preferred to talk football and politics, and to talk to constituents about their problems. He didn’t have deep personal conversations with anybody. But we did have a couple of good conversations. I’ll certainly remember those.”
“
He said, ‘Hey buddy I’m not going to read it but I hope you sell a million copies.’ – Councillor John Filion
When Filion told Ford that the book was coming out and Ford and offered to show it to him, the former mayor demurred. “He said, ‘Hey buddy I’m not going to read it but I hope you sell a million copies.’ I said, ‘It’s not what you think it is. I can read you a few exerpts.’ “He said, ‘Nah buddy. It’s like, somebody’s written one more thing about me, what could possibly be in there that hasn’t been written before?’”

Zaventem airport not slated to reopen until tomorrow >>>from page 1 by the terrorist explosions. The students, who are in grades 9 to 12, and two teachers, are safe, said Colin Lowndes, deputy headmaster for the Bayview Avenue and York Mills Road school. “Our focus is on them,” he said. “We are working 24/7 to make sure they are safe and looked after.” Lowndes declined to say where the group is being housed, citing privacy concerns. “They are safe, well fed,” he said, adding travel plans home have not been confirmed. “We are in constant
contact with the group leader. We know they are safe and comfortable and we are doing the best we can to get them home.” Zaventem airport was not slated to reopen until tomorrow (Friday). Crescent School offers several trips to various locations over March Break, Lowndes said, adding it’s been tradition at the private school for years. At least 31 people were killed in two separate Islamic State suicide bombings in Brussels Tuesday, when two bombs were detonated at the airport and one at a metro station.

Security increased at Toronto transit stations in wake of Brussels attack Surveillance was stepped up at Toronto-area transit stations in the wake of the devastating terrorist attacks in Brussels this week. Metrolinx confirmed it has boosted security at Union Station following the coordinated attacks at Brussels Airport, and later on within the city’s metro system, which resulted in over 30 known dead as of Tuesday. The TTC also posted an advisory, advising vigilance and to report any suspicious activity to TTC employees or police. EXPRESS PRESIDENT offers RESIGNation wUP
The president of Union Pearson (UP) Express has resigned from overseeing the service, Metrolinx has confirmed. Kathy Haley is the first senior executive to pay the price for the service’s low ridership, which resulted in scores of near-empty UP trains before fares were slashed earlier this month. Since the service launched
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT right before last year’s Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, it was excoriated for the high fares that seemed to price out regular transit riders in favour of business-class travellers seeking a rapid transportation option between downtown and Toronto Pearson airport. ON SECOND KEELESDALE ENTRANCE wMEETING
Construction of the first Eglinton Crosstown underground station has hardly begun, and Metrolinx is already looking at options for adding a secondary entrance to the site. The agency is gauging public feedback for purchasing surplus Toronto District School Board lands in the vicinity of the Keelesdale station site located near Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue West. In order to construct
the additional entrance, removal of a mature tree is required with the work set to begin before the end of the month. A meeting takes place 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at York Memorial Collegiate Institute, at 2690 Eglinton West. your say on TTC BIKE REPAIR STATIONS wHAve
With spring having sprung and bicycle traffic set to increase as the weather warms, the TTC wants to know how it can improve its bike repair options. The transit commission installed bike repair stations allowing for cyclists to attend to a quick tune-up or patch-up while on the go. Now, it wants to know if it should expand this service. Are dryers a dangerous appliance? The Ontario fire department responds to a dryer fire on average every 2 days. Dryers produce highly flammable lint that accumulates in the venting system and in the dryers housing. All dryers employ either electric or gas heating elements that can become an ignition point for lint. The combination of lint and high heat creates a fire hazard if allowed to go unchecked for an extended period of time. Vents that are clogged damaged, or constructed of improper materials make your dryer work harder, causing mechanical failures that can also ignite lint and cause a dryer fire. Signs that your dryer or vent needs attention are: clothes take

longer than a normal cycle to dry, lint build-up around the outside of your dryer, your dryer shuts off mid cycle, or there is a burning smell. Dryer manufacturers typically recommend you have your dryer vents serviced annually. A professional dryer vent specialist will run a complete diagnostic of your dryer and venting to ensure the system is fire safe and energy efficient. They will ensure your vent is properly installed with the proper venting material and offer tips on how to make your dryer safe and last longer. Having your dryer properly maintained will make your dryer fire safe and can decrease energy costs by up to $24 per month. Read more at www.homestars.com

the goal of highlighting arts, culture, and community in the area bounded by Finch Avenue, Hwy. 404, Lawrence Avenue, and Jane Street. According to the city, the Cultural Hotspot program aims to: • provide opportunities for young people in underserved neighbourhoods to engage in arts, culture, local history and community celebrations; • enhance the capacity of artists, arts and community organizations in the Hotspot; • connect local business and institutions to the arts; • provide employment and
mentorship opportunities for local youth; • encourage collaboration and new partnerships across sectors; • and build community pride and a sense of neighbourhood. The Cultural Hotspot will feature a number of signature projects including an acting bootcamp, mural painting workshops, a festival, performing arts and mentorship opportunities. More than 25 projects will showcase the work of North York’s emerging artists. Events include: • a musical production
about Marc Chagall performed in Russian, Yiddish and French; • North York Korean community youth and seniors art and storytelling workshops; • and the production of a film that engages members of the deaf community in its creation. The Hot Eats program, launching this summer, will highlight North York restaurants and cafes. The Cultural Hotspot project ran last year in Etobicoke from May to October.
