Bright idea puts Bayview Glen students in the spotlight

Supporting SickKids’ healthy and happy campaign

CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com After listening to a presentation on natural hazards and personal preparedness, five students from Bayview Glen put their heads together and came up with the Upright Light.

They developed the concept and created a prototype for an untippable candle holder, which could safely provide light and heat during power outages like the one experienced in this past winter’s ice storm.

“They identified a need for a safer candle and they came up with an innovative solution,” said Eric Borromeo, a parent coach for Ctrl-Z, the five-member robotics team consisting of students between grades 6 to 10 from the school near Don Mills Road and Hwy. 401.

Team members include Alex Mark, Justin Borromeo, Christopher Alexiev, Alex Alexiev and Luca D’Alessandro, who won for their research and presentation of the Upright Light at the annual FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robotics competition earlier this year.

The team has qualified to compete at the FLL International Open hosted by the University of Toronto and FIRST Robotics Canada June 4 to 7.

Managing childhood obesity at SickKids FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com In Canada, virtually nothing is known about children’s health in the zero to age three range.

But a North York pediatrician is working on a provincial study – the first of its kind in the country – looking into the health of kids in that age group and possible determining factors for obesity in later life.

“The goal is to basically build healthy children,” said Dr. Catherine Birken, pediatrician and head of the TARGet (Toronto Applied Research Group) Kids study. “In Canada, we have a national study on adult health, but it completely excludes children under three.

We know nothing about children aged zero to three in this country. It’s really important to learn more.”

Birken, an associate professor at the University of Toronto and associate scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children, said she’s partnered with family doctors and pediatricians and goes to doctor appointments when children in the study visit for checkups.

“Instead of asking them to come to us, we go to them,” she said. “We see them at six, nine, 12 months of age, when they get their immunization shots through their primary care provider. We aim to see them every time they go to the doctor’s office.”

2008, 6,000 children aged zero to six have been involved, Birken said, adding patients are followed “forever” with no end date in mind.

“I hope in the next few years we scale up in more urban areas,” she said, adding patients in the study live in Toronto and Kingston.

The study includes collecting patients’ height, weight and waist size, while also looking at sleep behaviours and screen time. Birken also looks at blood tests to see if there are problems with high cholesterol, or deficiencies in iron or vitamin D.

One of her grants for the study was to look at obesity in young kids to see if there are links to becoming overweight later in life.

“Are they just overweight at one point in their lives?” she asked. “One U.S. study says if you’re overweight at age five, you’ll be heavier later on.

There is a big gap (in research) and we are trying to fill it.”

Along with her study work, Birken treats children with obesity through STOMP (SickKids Team Obesity Management Program) Early Years, a clinical program that runs in collaboration with Toronto Public Health.

“It’s a treatment program for young overweight children,” she said, adding the body mass index sets the guidelines for what’s considered underweight, normal, overweight and obese. “We’re trying to look at the importance of focusing on the early years.”

According to the Childhood Obesity Foundation, there has been a dramatic increase in unhealthy weights in children in Canada over the past several decades.

SickKids study promotes health and fitness in leukemia patients FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com The first sign something wasn’t right with Imran Khan came in the form of random aches and pains.

It was 2010, and the sixyear-old would experience bouts of pains lasting five minutes at a time. The sensation stopped for about a week and a half before returning. He was also tired and feverish.

Several doctors couldn’t figure out what was plaguing the young boy.

Then one morning, Imran suffered a nose bleed. A trip to the family doctor and tests revealed the North York youngster had an enlarged spleen.

Imran was immediately sent to The Hospital for Sick Children, where he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a cancer of the bone marrow and blood.

“I heard a lot about SickKids,” said Imran’s mother, Shawista Khan. “I knew God was there and God was in control of everything.

Whatever the outcome, we would have been prepared for it.”

According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, ALL is the most common type of cancer in children aged one to seven.

Most children with ALL are cured after treatment.

Khan, who has strong Islamic faith, said her son was very confused at first and didn’t know what was happening to him.

“He knew he was at SickKids and he knew it was in God’s hands,” she said. “We talked about how so many kids were diagnosed who didn’t have treatment. God had chosen him for a reason and not someone else who didn’t have (access) to The Hospital for

Imran was one of 47 cancer patients from SickKids who has participated in a study looking at the impact of healthy active living during chemotherapy and radiation treatment in young people, specifically those diagnosed with ALL. The five-year-old, multinational study, with its main site at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, has so far signed up about 80 patients aged four to 18 and split them into two groups in the 135-week study period.

along with stretching. The goal of the study, which is ongoing until at least 2015, is to see if extra exercise will have impact on patients’ health during treatment, said Anne Christie, clinical research project coordinator at SickKids.

Patients are approached within the first week of diagnosis to see if they would like to participate in the study, she said, adding ideally exercise is done daily but may dip and rise depending how the patient feels during treatment.

Dr. Paul Nathan, a staff physician at SickKids in the haematology/oncology division and director of the Survivor Clinic, is working on the study with Christie.

He said the best time for physical activity is during treatment, as patients can be prone to obesity and unhealthy lifestyles down the road.

steroids in chemotherapy treatments, which can cause weight gain during and after treatment, he said.

Another reason is parents tend to be overprotective of their cancer-stricken children, and might limit the amount of physical activity they get while not keeping a close eye on their diet, allowing them to indulge in poor food choices.

The study focuses primarily on patients with ALL because it’s the most common type of leukemia seen in kids, and because of the 80 to 90 per cent survival rate.

“Families feel empowered when they let their kids be more active,” Nathan said, adding contact sports are not recommended because cancer patients are at an increased risk of bruising and bleeding.

Though results from the study aren’t yet available, Nathan said the idea of talking about diet, nutrition and exercise are seen as positives.

“All (patients and families) find benefits,” he said.

Now aged 10, Imran is back to riding his bike, playing goalie for soccer (his favourite team is Manchester City), and rounding the bases in baseball.

He gained a bit of weight from chemotherapy, but most of it disappeared once he finished treatment in December, Khan said. She said she immediately agreed for Imran to be part of the study because she otherwise would have been overprotective.

“I was worried about fractures, fatigue,” Khan said, adding she made sure Imran did his assigned exercises daily.

anadians believe our youth do not have a healthy lifestyle. We are twice as concerned about obesity in our youth, than any other health risk. That says a lot about the physical conditioning of our youth. But it also says there is hope for our youth – if we heed the warning signs and act now.

It’s Healthy and Happy Month (healthyandhappy. com) at The Hospital for Sick Children and this year the theme is centered around prevention of youth health issues.

Growing healthier children now will save much grief later in life when they become unhealthy adults fallen victim to the bad decisions made when young.

And all of this is increasingly our view taxing on the health care system – overburdened and underfunded Get motivated given increasing demands.

The hospital – affectionately to help raise known as SickKids – conducted a survey, and here’s an example of healthy kids what they found: w 56 per cent said society must do everything it can to improve the lifestyle of today’s children. w Bullying, obesity, child abuse, alcohol/drug abuse, suicide, depression all rank high in the minds of Canadians. w 78 per cent say children today are getting less exercise compared to their own childhood. w 65 per cent say children today have poorer eating habits. w 59 per cent say children are receiving less nutritional value in what they eat. w Mental illness is the second most concerning illness among young people.

Add to the fact that UNICEF ranks Canada 27th out of 29 industrialized nations on obesity. When that stat was shared, 21 per cent of Canadians said it motivated them to personal action.

That would amount to a significant amount of action, but it’s not enough. We hope through the stories you read in today’s themed edition and the stories you read online at www.insidetoronto.com or www. northyorkmirror.com, you will be motivated to help preserve the health of young people who are part of your world.

This may be the first generation of Canadians who do not live as long as their parents. That’s a hard concept to accept in a society where we generally are able to control many of the threats to our children’s health.

Getting in touch with our true nature

T

he phone rang bright and early Saturday morning.

It was my buddy Shawn inviting me up to a cottage he and his wife had rented in Algonquin Park for the holiday weekend.

He didn’t have to ask twice. I hustled out the door in a flash and was on their doorstep at 1 p.m. sharp.

I jubilantly honked several times to announce my arrival, but before I ambled inside I sprawled on the grass in front in awe of the surroundings: the Ontario wilderness in all its glory.

Rugged, majestic, untamed, unspoiled. I felt like I was smack-dab in the middle of a Tom Thomson watercolour.

I took a deep breath.

And another. And another.

I savoured each one. Is there anything more delicious than the taste of clean air? Is there anything more invigorating?

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY The aroma of the landscape was out of this world, too. The unique blend of birch bark and pine needles was positively intoxicating.

And the sky?

Fuggedaboutit.

I can’t remember the last time I’d ever seen it this dark shade of blue.

I had to put on my sunglasses it was so bright. I couldn’t stare at it without squinting.

No matter which way I looked, the scenery was spectacular. It was sheer joy to be in the presence of such beauty.

After I’d soaked it all in I closed my eyes and drifted away, imagining what I hoped would be in store for me on the weekend. A little hiking, some canoeing, a lot of stars at night, the northern lights if I get

really lucky, a campfire or two or three and best of all, coming face to face with the indigenous wildlife frolicking in their natural habitat.

Just the thought alone of the animals I might be crossing paths with put a lump in my throat.

Elegant white-tailed deer prancing about with their fawns, industrious beavers feverishly working away on their dams, exuberant ruffed grouse drumming on a log, chimney swifts soaring overhead, black bears rumbling through the woods, moose foraging in the brush.

And the piece de resistance? The ubiquitous common loons serenading one and all with their captivating yodeling melodies.

Oh, yeah. A guy could get used to this in a hurry.

A real hurry. It doesn’t get any better than this.

No doubt about it, there’s nothing like a

weekend roughing it in the wilderness of Algonquin Park to...

I was about to complete my final thought when I was awakened from my a daydream by an unmistakable thunderous roar.

It was Shawn with his arms folded standing at the door.

“Hey, nature boy,” he bellowed. “The Rangers/ Canadiens game is about to start and the pizza, wings, fries and onion rings are getting cold while you’re waxing rhapsodic out there. Wrap up the monologue pronto and get your butt in here or you going to miss the opening face-off.”

The great outdoors will have to wait, apparently. The not too shabby indoors beckons.

INDEPENDENCE Purina Walk for Dog Guides changes lives of people with disabilities

N

ot so long ago, Jacob Ormonde lived his life riddled in fear and anxiety, his confidence at an all-time low.

Afraid he would sleep through a fire alarm resulted in panic attacks; hesitant to leave the house without a support worker, Ormonde, a Don Mills and Eglinton Avenue-area resident, was apprehensive about taking public transit to work. His social life suffered immensely.

Everything changed a year ago when “Eclaire” entered his life.

Eclaire, a two-yearold standard poodle, is Ormonde’s hearing ear dog.

Hearing ear guide dogs are specifically trained to assist people who are deaf or hearing impaired by physically alerting their partner to common sounds like a fire alarm, doorbell, alarm clock, stove timers

and telephone ringing, among a long list of others.

A hearing ear guide dog nudges or paws its partner alerting them to a sound and then leads them to its source.

“Eclaire has changed my life in so many aspects. She has made the environment I live in so much safer and I have the confidence to live my life more independently,” Ormonde told The Mirror through an email interview.

“Before I got Eclaire, I lived a life of fear, anxiety and always felt like I needed someone with me. I lacked of confidence and did not have a social life. Work life was stressful for me to get through each day.”

Having Eclaire by his side has given Ormonde the confidence to immerse himself in his community; to get out there and be social.

He is a Special Olympic athlete competing in power-lifting and softball;

he plays hockey through the Special Hockey International league called the Donaldson’s Diamonds.

“Eclaire travels with me to sporting events and it makes me feel safe that she is always there for me and she assures me that I can finally live my life with joy and not fear and anxiety,” he said.

Ormonde got Eclaire from the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.

Friday He underwent a twoweek training program at the Dog Guides training facility in Oakville along with Eclaire.

On Friday, the Purina Walk for Dog Guides takes place in High Park. This event will be the first of more than 200 walks taking place across the country in support of people with disabilities. Proceeds from the walk will go towards providing dog guides at no cost to

those who need it most.

“After I found out that Dog Guides raises its money to help Canadians at no costs in getting them a guide dog, I felt like it was my responsibility to give back and help raise money for other Canadians like myself in getting such a precious gift in my life,” said Ormonde.

“The Walk for Guide Dogs from my perspective, is a great way to get out in the community and walk with friends and family.”

Ormonde encourages anyone seeking a partnership with a guide dog to contact the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.

“When I was seeking information for a guide dog I found it was a very easy process and it is an incredible and amazing experience,” he said.

trained dog guides at no cost to people of all ages across the country. Each dog guide costs approximately $25,000 to raise and train, yet they are provided at no cost to qualified applicants.

The organization relies solely on the support of fundraising events as well as donations from service clubs, corporations, foun-

dations and individuals.

“One hundred percent of the funds raised (from the walks) will go towards providing life changing dog guides to Canadians with disabilities,” said Dog Guides spokesperson Natalie Moncur.

ONTARIANS ARE HEADING to the polls June 12 to elect candidates who will form the next provincial government.

As of yesterday, the following candidates are set to run in the riding of Willowdale: Alexander Brown for the NDP, Michael Ceci for the PC Party, Teresa Pun for the Green Party, and David Zimmer (the incumbent) for the Liberal Party.

The Mirror sent questionnaires to candidates from the four main parties. Here are their responses.

■ I will support the excellent work of the NDP’s Rosario Marchese in updating the Condominium Act and establishing a provincial review board to allow owners to take disputes with developers and property managers to a review officer. This would be cheaper and quicker than the provincial court system and benefit the thousands of condo owners in Willowdale.

Licensing of property managers would improve the quality of service, reducing many of the problems in condo developments.

■ Support for infrastructure funding is needed to ensure that the significant rapid growth in Willowdale’s population is dealt with successfully.

■ The Yonge Street subway relief line is a provincial priority that will improve subway service in the Willowdale riding. Improved GO train service and better integration with Metrolinx is essential for Willowdale.

■ I grew up in Hamilton, attended McMaster University and after graduating I lived in Japan where I taught English to adult students for a number of years. Returning to Canada, I lived in Toronto and worked as a career counsellor enabling many adults to get back into the workforce and be successful. I am now teaching English as a second language to adult international students.

■ One of my top priorities is helping to create good-paying jobs for the people of Willowdale with our Million Jobs Plan. Many families in our riding have young people who are not able to find jobs for the summer or after graduation.

If elected, I will work to cut red tape for startups and small businesses, promote specialized degrees and promote a strong focus on science, technology, business and math subjects in our post-secondary institutions.

■ Before we can invest in community services, we need to get our fiscal house in order and balance the budget. If elected, I will help put a new focus on chronic care, move health care closer to home and invest in frontline health care services, not bureaucratic posts. We also need to ensure our children have the tools to succeed, such as raising the bar on core education and improving their achievement in math.

■ We need to ensure the transit infrastructure is there to encourage people to work closer to home and spend less time commuting and more time with their families. If elected, I will help put the province in charge of: GTA transportation planning, the east-west express subway line and the expansion of our highways, including fixing bottlenecks throughout the region such as the 401/Yonge corridor. We will undertake all these projects without raising taxes.

■ In addition to being a lifelong Willowdale resident, I’m a small business entrepreneur who co-founded a successful media production company. Most recently, I am helping with an organization that will offer a clear path to meaningful and dignified employment for individuals with special needs. I’m looking forward to contributing more to this wonderful riding as its Member of Provincial Parliament on June 12.

■ What I am hearing from constituents is that safe and affordable daycare is very difficult to find. We need to move towards a publicly funded model for childcare (currently very successful in Quebec) because quality daycare permits parents to work, which allows the economy to grow. In the interim, we also need a program for the ongoing evaluation of unlicensed home daycares. I would like all home daycares to be fully licensed.

■ We need to ensure that public transit, local school, childcare services and community green space needs can continue to be met for our growing population. We need dedicated funding for public transit, a single public school board (that can save the Ontario people over $1 billion that can be reinvested in our children), improved access to quality and affordable daycare, and the return of the tree canopies that were destroyed by the winter ice storm.

■ The Green Party supports a dedicated fund for public transit. I believe this is very important for Willowdale residents. The congestion commuters face on the subway and on the roads is unbearable during peak hours. I would push for increased subway service frequency during peak morning and evening hours, an extension of the Yonge line to Thornhill and Richmond Hill, safe cycling paths along non-major streets, and a gas tax to fund these initiatives.

■ I live in Willowdale with my husband and daughter. We are both physicians and I practice allergy and clinical immunology at Yonge/Eglinton and Richmond Hill. I believe that health care reform is sorely overdue. I have trained at the University of Toronto, Memorial University of Newfoundland and the University of Manitoba in academic centres and in the community. I understand first-hand what needs to be done to provide the Ontario people with the health care they deserve.

■ For a number of years I have been championing a solution at Queen’s Park to unlock the gridlock at the Yonge Street/Hwy. 401 interchange. I was pleased to recently announce that Ontario will cost share the second phase of an infrastructure-based solution with the City of Toronto, building upon the success of phase one. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made and am eager to see this project through to completion.

■ It’s great that our community is growing, that’s why government needs to make the right investments in health care, education and infrastructure to grow with it. The opposition parties either want to make cuts to these services, or they have no plan at all. The Liberal 10-year plan will ensure that we continue to invest in the hospitals, schools, transit and roads that make Willowdale such a fantastic place to live.

■ Transit is not only essential to improving the quality of life in Willowdale, but it is also a key part of the Liberal plan for job creation and growth. Our 10-year plan to move Ontario forward would invest $15 billion in transit, transportation and infrastructure in the GTHA. Not only will we create jobs and grow the economy, we can reduce congestion so that we spend less time commuting and more time at home.

■ I’ve been proud to serve as MPP for Willowdale since 2003. Before my appointment as Minister of Aboriginal Affairs in 2013 I was parliamentary assistant to several ministers, including Kathleen Wynne. Prior to that, on top of my legal career, I have been chair of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation, assistant deputy chair of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, president of the Alzheimer Society of Canada and director of the Humane Society.

reaches labour agreements wTTC The TTC has reached labour agreements with four unions representing around 10,000 of its employees.

The new four-yearcontracts with the unions – including Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) 113 – were settled without proceeding to arbitration for the first time since 2008, notes a press release issued by the TTC over the Victoria Day weekend.

Not many details are known about the new deals, although vehicle operators, fare collectors as well as maintenance workers will receive a pay raise of just over eight per cent over the life of the contract.

Non-unionized workers will also receive slight pay increases. There are provisions to restrict job outsourcing.

The agency tasked with coordinating regional transit planning within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) has reduced its usual volume of press releases and social media postings until after the Ontario election, scheduled for June 12. Until then, Metrolinx, like other provincial departments, will limit communications to “emergencies, statutory requirements, public health

advisories and time-sensitive matters”.

Lake Shore Boulevard lane closures began this week and will stay in place until the middle of July as the city undertakes “critical” utility work in advance of next year’s Pan American Games.

Starting May 21, westbound lane closures are scheduled in the areas from Yonge to Rees Street, Bathurst Street to British Columbia Road, and Parkside Drive to Windermere Avenue. Eastbound lane closures are also scheduled between British Columbia and Lower Spadina Avenue.

The closures are set to take place mostly outside rush hour, as well as weekends and evenings.

THE RIDING OF YORK SOUTH-WESTON has been represented provincially by the Liberal party since October 2007, when current MPP Laura Albanese secured the riding in a narrow victory over Paul Ferreira of the NDP. Ferreira, who is running against Albanese for the fourth time, had defeated Albanese in a byelection earlier in 2007. Andrew Ffrench is running for the Progressive Conservatives. Each of the candidates of the four major parties running in York SouthWeston for the June 12 provincial election were asked to answer the following questions. As of yesterday afternoon, there was no candidate listed for the Green Party.

■ Creating sustainable jobs for people of all ages is important to me. I strongly support tying infrastructure investments to local trades and apprenticeship programs, especially through an initiative known as Community Benefit Agreements (CBAs).

It is instrumental to help create jobs for our youth. The recent Youth Jobs Strategy, a $295-million investment, benefits local youth including those facing barriers to work such as immigrants, visible minorities, those on social assistance and youth with disabilities.

■ I regularly host poverty reduction consultations to gain community perspective on this issue. Based on this, I’m working towards better access to local services including job and skills training, greater access to nurses and doctors, and more supports for seniors.

The latest consultation formed part of the 2014 budget including raising the minimum wage, saving money on childcare and post-secondary education and reducing waiting lists for developmental services, with a proposed investment of $810 million.

■ The Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which will run underground along Eglinton Avenue from Black Creek Drive, will provide more transit options.

To ensure our community benefits from the UP Express, a new service running from downtown Toronto to Pearson Airport, we successfully secured a stop in Weston. I also championed for the electrification of the UP Express and was successful in ensuring government commitment in the 2014 budget. The NDP and PCs chose not to support it.

■ The high ratio of poverty in York South-Weston is coupled by the lack of jobs. As a result of the Million Jobs Plan bringing more jobs into this once vibrant riding, it will reduce the number of people living below or on the poverty line.

The Million Jobs Plan has a retraining program to help make people both young and the over-50 not only job-ready, but to have good-paying jobs available.

■ The Ontario Progressive Conservatives and their leader Tim Hudak are all about good transit through the use of subways, cross-city transit, a faster GO Transit system, and an improved highway system. This would make it much easier and convenient for the residents of York South-Weston to commute to other parts of the city allowing them broader access to employment and education within the GTA.

■ Ontario has been good to my family. I was born of an immigrant couple from Jamaica, by way of England. When they settled in Ontario they knew this would become their forever home. I met my wife here in York South-Weston.

A recent CIBC poll suggests nearly one-third of small business owners in Ontario don’t have contingency plans in case of severe weather incidents.

The Ontario number (31 per cent) is slightly lower than the national average of 35 per cent.

According to the poll, 23 per cent of Ontario small business owners are reevaluating their business interruption plans. The province was hit hard by ice storms this past winter.

“One of the important facts we got from the meeting is there’s a lot of candle fires,” said Alex Alexiev, whose been on the Ctrl-Z team for two years.

“Candles are an important item (in the emergency kit) but they’re also the most dangerous,” Luca added.

In preparation for the competition in June, the team is making a 3D design for the Upright Light prototype.

Griffin Centre: Doug Ford not the only NIMBY Whilst his brother cavorts about cottage country on day passes from addiction rehabilitation, it’s reassuring to see that Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford is keeping up the Ford name and all it stands for here in the city.

As the Etobicoke Guardian’s Tamara Shephard reported last week, Doug Ford showed up – late – for a meeting at Toronto police’s 23 Division, to take on the Griffin Centre, a home for developmentally disabled youth on behalf of its angry neighbours.

According to Shephard’s report, Ford told the staff of the centre that they had “ruined the community” in the Kipling and West Humber area.

The two-month-old centre is a house where four youth – some with autism – live under supervision. Some of the youth have behavioural issues that manifest in outbursts sometimes requiring police to attend. The staff at the centre sometimes park on the street. Sometimes, the youth who live in the centre are permitted outdoors.

It was this last point that

david nickle the city seemed to shock the councillor, whom Shephard quotes thusly: “You can’t destroy a community like this. People have worked 30 years for their home... My heart goes out to kids with autism. But no one told me they’d be leaving the house. If it comes down to it, I’ll buy the house myself and resell it.”

Later, he asked if any of the children were sex offenders (for the record: staff at the centre said none of them are).

It’s difficult to know what to say about Doug and Rob Ford anymore. They have so debased the public discourse in the past year, that even when one of them passes an evening by stirring up an angry crowd to run a house for disabled youth out of town, it’s hard to admonish him.

The men are scoundrels. We know it and they know it.

But let’s leave Doug alone a moment, and ponder some of

the other comments Shephard collected Thursday night from those in attendance.

“This is not a place for mental people. This is a residential area. Why don’t you build a house out on a farm?”

“When my child says, ‘Mommy, why are there police here again?’ What do I say?”

“This is a community for people, not for that.”

Councillor Ford’s remarks ride the crest of that wave of unfortunate NIMBYism – and one might argue that his and his brother’s reign at Toronto City Hall were propelled by the same poisonous sentiment.

In October, odds are good that voters will send the brothers Ford from Toronto City Hall – probably for good.

But the insular, fearful, uncompassionate and fundamentally selfish sentiment on display at 23 Division last week – the sentiment that allowed the Fords in to begin with – it will take a great many years to rid ourselves of that.
