Senator O’Connor ready to Opera program celebrate golden anniversary hits high note LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com

hen Susan Baker found out she had been hired as an English and phys ed teacher at North York’s Senator O’Connor College School in 1976, her husband took her for a drive so she could have a look at her new place of employment.

As they made their way up Victoria Park Avenue 37 years ago, Baker spied through the trees the stately O’Connor House, on the same site as the school.

“It was magnificent. It took my breath away,” said Baker, now the school’s principal.

Other than a couple of years at another Catholic high school as vice-principal, she has spent her career at Senator O’Connor.

In fact, Baker, who retires next month, stayed on longer to help organize the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations being held on Saturday, June 1.

“It’s going to be great. We expect 1,000,” she said.

The celebration will kick off at 2 p.m. with a mass and the opening ceremonies, including a presentation to Brother Domenic Viggiani, president of De La Salle College, who will accept plaques on behalf of the school’s founding Christian Brothers, some of whom will also attend the event.

The opening ceremonies will be followed by an alumni basketball game.

During the afternoon, there will be arts presentations, live music, decade rooms, the sale of past yearbooks, and food and refreshments. In the evening, there will be an alumni show and an after party.

However, the event will be about more than reuniting alumni and others with a connection to the school.

From 4 to 7 p.m., reunion guests will get a sneak peak of the restoration of the historic O’Connor House, which was severely damaged in a fire just over a year ago.

The school will be celebrating its 50th anniversary on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.

“We’re having the building come to life,” said Tony Wagner, chair of the O’Connor House board of directors.

Reunion guests will be able to tour the first floors of the O’Connor House and the adjacent Coach House, which has been used by students since last September for theatre arts. The Coach House was not damaged by the fire but has undergone renovations to restore the building.

Only the first floors have been restored so far due to financial constraints, although Wagner said the board will soon launch a fundraising campaign to cover some costs to date and to finish restoration work.

The original budget to restore the O’Connor House, the Coach House and a shed was $4.2 million. So far, $5.6 million has been

spent on the work.

“It’s nobody’s fault.

It’s an old building,” he said, adding unexpected expenses cropped up during renovations.

The O’Connor House was built in the 1930s as the home of philanthropist Senator Frank O’Connor, a politician and founder of the Laura Secord candy stores.

He died in 1939, leaving his 900-acre farm near Victoria Park and Ellesmere Road to the Christian Brothers.

In 1963, J.J. Lynch High School opened on the site, becoming the first coeducational Catholic school in the Toronto archdiocese.

However, boys were taught

by Christian Brothers and girls were taught on a different floor by nuns with the Daughters of Wisdom.

By 1965, the school had been renamed Senator O’Connor and by the

1966/67 school year, boys and girls were taught in the same classrooms.

For many years, the school’s future hung in the balance, Baker said. Before full provincial funding was extended to Catholic high schools in 1984, Senator O’Connor students, teachers and parents went year to year wondering if the school would survive, she said.

Baker, who has been at the school so long she has taught the children of parents she instructed years ago, said Senator O’Connor inspires loyalty.

For example, other faculty have also been there for decades, including Halina Cosentino who began in 1973, and Rose Colangelo, who joined in 1976.

“People stay. They’re lifers. The only time you leave is if you’re moving out of the city,” Baker said.

“To me, it’s always been the relationships (that make Senator O’Connor special).

It’s really tight-knit. We treated the kids like your own kids. The idea is to turn them into people who are compassionate and caring and offer something to society. We all take great pride in the community.”

pera is more than the stereotypical fat woman in a Viking hat belting out song after song.

It’s acting. Dancing.

Costume design.

Essentially, it’s storytelling using every art form, said Dean Burry, program leader for Canadian Opera Company’s (COC) After School Opera Program.

For the past 15 years, the program has taught children between seven and 12 years about the world of opera at five locations throughout the city, including Barbara Frum Community Centre near Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue since 2000.

The 25 youngsters partaking in the 10-week spring session at Barbara Frum Community Centre will showcase their newfound knowledge during a 15-minute mini-opera Tuesday for family and friends inside the centre at 5:15 p.m.

The ancient Chinese opera, titled Silken Spirits, was written in 2002 by Burry and is being brought back to the stage in honour of the After School Opera Program’s 15th anniversary, he said.

The program runs three sessions a year out of each location and all do the same opera each session, but Burry decided to reach into his extensive catalog of past performances to showcase his favourite ones, noting each site is doing a different performance for this session’s

wrap-up.

Each site runs the twohour weekly program, which is open to anyone wishing to try opera, Burry said.

“You have to register for our programs, but there isn’t an audition,” he said.

“It’s extremely affordable as well.”

The program encompasses all aspects of opera, including singing, acting, lighting, directing, set and costume design, while roles for the mini-opera are drawn out of a hat, he said.

“We’ve brought in mimes, puppeteers, dancers to do workshops,” Burry said. “For Silken Spirits, we had a traditional Chinese dancer come in.”

As for the goal of the After School Opera Program, Burry said he hopes participants will learn opera isn’t necessarily what they think it is.

“The program is like a multi-vitamin,” he said. “It has music, drama, dance.

I

n today’s newspaper we’ve presented the 11 funding tools Metrolinx was considering as ways to find $34 billion to fund the first part of the Big Move project in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

There’s been plenty of debate about these tools, how transit expansion should be paid for and who will pay. Ultimately, all roads lead to the Province of Ontario when it comes to these questions.

Metrolinx, the provincial agency tasked with building and financing the Big Move transit expansion, has recommended four of the 11 revenue tools in a report which will go to the province and affected municipalities by this Saturday, June 1.

You can find which four Metrolinx said no to; which three it listed as supplemental measures; and the four it passed on to the province in our exclusive look here. Other players with a our view stake in the Big Move, including the City of Toronto, CivicAction and the Toronto Region Board of What are Trade, have their own positions you willing on the funding tools; this is also reflected in our report. to accept?

The Big Move is a huge project with many spurs of transit growth, and multiple jurisdictions with competing priorities. However, we are all part of the same transit/traffic mess, and it’s hurting our economy right now in long commute times and increased business costs. We’ll all pay the price for not getting the Big Move right.

The onus is on taxpayers to understand the situation and its impact. It’s your tax money that will potentially fund transit upgrades. It’s easy to just say no to taxes, but then you have to be able to offer other sources of funding and be part of the solution.

We hope our report will let readers better understand some of the ways in which Metrolinx thought the Big Move could be funded, and how those funding tools would work.

Take a look at them and then let your local MPP know what you think, and what you would be willing to accept and pay.

It is the province that will decide which revenue tools to implement, and right now we have a relatively unstable minority government situation.

Hopefully, the importance of better transit will trump politics when making these decisions.

Ford Nation fights on despite controversies

A

s the Ford brothers, Rob and Doug, face allegations about their personal lives and setbacks due to the departure of key staff, they have shown aggressiveness in defending what they say are key achievements of the administration.

To those who disparage, they point to the “over a billion” they have saved taxpayers, taming the unions, their advocacy for subways, and standing up for the average resident.

Really? Let’s take a look at some of those claims.

While claims for saving “over a billion” may be hyperbole, the Ford administration has limited the size of municipal government.

Huge amounts of gravy have never been found.

Yet the administration has found savings by chasing many small issues. It has not been afraid to eliminate costly practices, implement labour-saving automation and merge departments.

Even critics concede that

david soknacki beyond the headlines outsourcing waste collection was vindicated by achieving both lower costs and fewer complaints.

These triumphs are all the more impressive by coming after council revoked the much loathed vehicle registration tax, and approved labour agreements with the city’s major unions.

Against these early victories stands a long string of defeats.

First came the administration’s need to reverse its position on the redevelopment of the port lands, a decision that taught councillors that the administration could be beaten.

Nor was the mayor able to deliver on his key platform plank of “subways, subways, subways.”

Being unable or unwilling to compromise, he lost control of councillors on the TTC, then council itself,

and finally had to suffer the humiliation of seeing council approve the plan he declared dead on his first day of office.

Generally on the critical transit file, Mayor Ford seems to misunderstand the demographics driving transit demand, fantasize about private financing, misread council, and so, by not grasping the new powers being given to Metrolinx, has lost the ability to make major transit decisions.

As well, council took the issue of a casino away from the mayor’s control.

Although it was highly unlikely that the current premier would allow a downtown casino, the mayor’s ineptness was directly responsible for council’s disapproval for a casino at Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke. It was a decision that has the potential of costing jobs and revenue.

In short, the mayor’s first year in office, and his focus on select financial issues saw notable successes, fol-

lowed by mutiny, personal troubles and most recently, by the inability to even articulate positions on signature issues such as Metrolinx’s recommendations for new taxes.

Although there is some truth in the administration’s claims, promoting their achievements list was done mostly to appeal to their core supporters, called Ford Nation. So far, it has worked.

Controversies have done little to dent the mayor’s approval level that stays at about 36 per cent, a figure unchanged from early May, although it is somewhat down from the 47 per cent with which he won the mayoral election.

The conclusion from the events of May is that until allegations from the media have been proven, the mayor, his administration and his supporters are solid enough to fight on.

Woman charged in death of newborn Police investigation started after call from North York General Hospital day.

Police had followed up on leads suggesting the baby had been left in a clothing donation bin. RCMP from Surrey, B.C. assisted in the investigation.

“Following up on a lead regarding the distribution of items from a local clothing donation bank, the RCMP were contacted and requested to search a shipping container that had

been sent from Toronto to Surrey,” police said in a news release. “The investigation is ongoing as the body of the infant has not yet been located.”

Charged is 25-year-old Angelica Spanidis.

Two men are in hospital following a stabbing outside a karaoke bar Wednesday.

Police said the men were approached by two other men armed with knives outside Truc Karaoke, 3585 Keele St., north of Sheppard Avenue, when a fight ensued around 12:30 a.m.

The musical Mame began life as a best-selling novel Auntie Mame by Patrick Dennis. It later became a play, then a film, and in 1966 a musical comedy.

Jerry Herman provided the songs including Open a New Window, If He Waked into My Life, the seasonal favorite We Need a Little Christmas, and the rousing title song.

For the Civic Light-Opera Company’s production of Mame, director Joe Cascone has taken the approach that the story of Auntie Mame is essentially an intimate one, and as such he strips away all the excesses, harkening back to the original novel and play.

The story – as always – tells of young Patrick Dennis, played initially and with great charm by Koby Lee. The newly orphaned Patrick is sent to live with his only living relative, the extravagant, life-loving Auntie Mame, played by Caroline Moro-Dalicandro.

These two performers bring genuine tenderness to their scenes together, notably in their duet My Best Girl as Patrick consoles his aunt

mark andrew lawrence front row centre after her disastrous attempt at a theatrical career.

As Mame rebounds from one calamity after another, Moro-Dalicandro keeps the character rooted in reality, playing up Mame’s zest for life, but balancing that with a portrait of a big-hearted woman dedicated to friends and family.

Cascone has surrounded his leading lady with a lively ensemble including Julie Lennick as Mame’s acidtongued bosom buddy, Vera Charles, Jack Ly, as Mame’s devoted Japanese houseboy, Ito, and David Haines bringing the required amount of dignity to the role of Mame’s on-again off-again cynical boyfriend Lindsay Woolsey. Cascone even partakes in the fun by appearing in a cameo role as Mame’s southern beau.

As the years roll along, Patrick grows up and Daniel Cornthwaite takes over the role, making older Patrick a

well-rounded character. This is especially important as he becomes involved with a vile fiancée, Gloria Upson (played with snobbish delight by Katie Richardson) and introduces Mame to Gloria’s bigoted parents (Susan Sanders and Eric Botosan.)

Mame knows how to put these people in their place, aided by her faithful secretary Agnes Gooch. Finnie Jesson shows marvelous comic timing as the very pregnant character navigates a towering set of stairs. .

Classic musical comedies such as Mame thrive on the energy of the entire cast and this production keeps that energy level high from the first party scene to the very last.

waterlogged: Looking north from Dundas Street to the Don Valley Parkway after earlymorning flooding yesterday of the Don River closed traffic in both directions from the Gardiner Expressway to the Bayview/Bloor exit. The water receded enough in the morning in the southbound lanes to allow cleanup crews to sweep away mud left behind from the flood. It took longer to clear the northbound lanes, which remained closed for a good part of Wednesday. Jane Street and Wilson Avenue was also flooded, with multiple cars stuck in the water, but the area cleared Wednesday morning. GO train service was also affected by the downpour, as service between Oriole and Old Cummer GO stations was shut down as a section of the Richmond Hill line was also submerged.

The 16th annual Stroll, Roll and Run Relay will be held Saturday, June 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the organization’s office at 1 Overland Dr., southwest of Lawrence Avenue and Don Mills Road. The event will include a variety of activities including live music, program demonstrations, a reptile petting zoo, a barbecue and more.

Funds raised will support a wide range of programs including long-term care, yoga classes and Meals on Wheels.

The DVP will have full lane closures in both directions from the Gardiner Expressway to Hwy. 401 from 2 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sunday as 13,000 people cycle while raising money for research and programs to help eliminate heart disease and stroke.

This year’s event, which is full, hopes to raise $5.5 million.

HIGH OCCUPANCY TOLL (HOT) LANE How it works: Low occupancy drivers pay a user fee to access High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV ) lanes normally reserved for vehicles transporting three or more people.

Annual projected revenue for The Big Move: A toll of 30 cents per kilometre would bring in anywhere from $25-45 million by 2014 and up to $250 million after 2017 if additional HOT lanes are constructed on the 400 series highways as planned.

LAND VALUE CAPTURE How it works: Fee charged to property owners, including developers and home buyers, to capture a property value increase resulting from proximity to a public transit connection or project.

Examples where it is used: HOT lanes exist or are planned in just about every U.S. state dating back to the 1970s.

In the midst of the political apocalypse unfolding at Toronto City Hall, it’s nice to see things aren’t collapsing everywhere when it comes to the governance of our city.

On Monday, Metrolinx released its preferred revenue tools – yes, also known as fees and taxes – to pay for transit expansion in Toronto and the surrounding communities.

The revenue tools preferred are a one per cent hike in the HST, a five-cent-per-litre gas tax, a 25-cent commercial parking levy and a 15 per cent increase in development charges. Metrolinx also recommended tolls on HOV lanes, parking fees at transit stations and a land value capture tax as supplemental tools.

The total cost for the average household would be $477 a year, according to Metrolinx.

More for big families.

All of this was too rich for the broken instrument that Toronto Council had become

david nickle the city earlier this month, when it attempted consensus on ways to raise money for transit expansion. The best council could do then was ask for a couple more subways, and tell the provincial government to find the money to pay for it.

The political appointees that make up Metrolinx are, sadly, left to be the grown-ups in a room full of democratically elected kindergarteners.

Toronto needs politically mature guidance. The city and the surrounding region desperately need to update and expand transportation infrastructure. Families being hit up for $500 to $1,000 a year in new fees will need that infrastructure as more families arrive to use the roads and buses and subways of this town.

And council? Beset by scan-

dal in the mayor’s office, its members divided along political, regional and grudge lines...

In its current state, it’s never been less fit to govern.

As Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday has pointed out, the business of the city goes on as it collapses. Toronto is 90 per cent a service delivery organization and as long as it’s financially sound and retains a professional bureaucracy, the city itself will work.

But that crucial 10 per cent, which involves moving an agenda forward and crafting policy, is beyond Toronto.

Fortunately, the policy question of how to fund and build better transportation has been taken away from council and given to an unelected body.

Under ordinary circumstances, that would be cause for alarm. These days, it’s a lucky break.

Debunking myths about life insurance Life insurance is not a simple product. Trying to understand all the different options and their respective benefits can require confronting several well-entrenched myths.

“My sister and I felt like he was avoiding us,” she said.

Months passed. By winter, Amy’s sister, Francine, had asked their dad to help sew curtains, as she was preg-

nant with her first child. “He said, ‘No, I have a neurological problem with my hands,’” Amy recalled of his answer. “I didn’t believe him.”

Leo eventually agreed to meet Amy, but it had to be at her place, just the two of them.

“I knew something was wrong,” she said. “He and my step-mom were joined at the hip and went everywhere together.”

In January 2009 Leo paid her a visit, his wife Jean dropping him off at Amy’s apartment. To Amy’s surprise,

as her father rounded the corner of the hallway, he was using surgical steel crutches attached to the elbows to help him walk.

And though Amy had a dream the night before that her dad had ALS, she never guessed it would be reality.

“I said, what the hell is going on?” she said. “He said, ‘I have ALS.’ I crumbled. I didn’t want to be right about it.”

According to ALS Canada, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease. People living with the disease become progressively paralyzed due to degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Eighty per cent of people with ALS die within two to five years of diagnosis, unable to breathe or swallow. Ten per cent of those affected may live for 10 years or longer.

ALS has no known cure or effective treatment yet. Some 2,500 to 3,000 Canadians currently live with the fatal disease.

“I didn’t know much about ALS but I knew people didn’t last long with it,” Amy said. “And we had now lost six months because my dad didn’t tell us what was wrong.”

Leo, who had limb onset ALS, saw his condition deteriorate quickly. He died in December 2010 at age 64.

Though Leo spent six days in hospice care before his death, Amy said her dad remained as active as could be, going on several cruises with Jean and attending a wedding in Poland in the summer of 2010.

“I got a call from my stepmother in early December (2010) saying he was now in hospice care in Richmond Hill,” Amy said. “A week before he had been complaining about a bronchial infection but was otherwise fine. My stepmother was his primary care giver, she fed him, bathed him. My dad was proud and didn’t want (health care workers) in the house.”

The first two days Leo was in hospice care he was alert and spoke in short sentences, but then his health rapidly declined, Amy said.

“I was going to my sister’s after vising him and as soon as I left, he passed,” she said. “I felt guilty I wasn’t there, but maybe he planned it that way, being alone with his wife.”

Amy first did the Toronto WALK for ALS in 2009 at Sunnybrook Park by herself, but found it emotionally difficult. She said she is apprehensive about doing the walk alone this year, but will likely participate and has raised $1,000 for the cause.

This year’s five-kilometre walk will take place Saturday, June 1 at Earl Bales Park at Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue. Registration will be held at 9 a.m., with the walk starting at 10:20 a.m.

At the meeting, Ford made a passionate case for ignoring city legal advice to allow the ward boundary review to go forward without preconceived direction from politicians.

Ford argued federal riding boundaries are likely to add three new ridings in Toronto.

And if council continues with the practice of dividing

Mayor Rob Ford’s Executive Committee has voted to look at reducing the number of councillors at the same time as consultants review new ward boundaries.

The committee supported an amendment by the mayor, a move that takes Ford a step closer to fulfilling a 2010 election promise to

ridings in two to create city wards, that would increase the number of wards from 44 to 50.

“Are we going to go to 50 wards?,” asked Ford. “At the rate we’re going we’re going to have 50 councillors, and you see the problems we have with 44 councillors.”

During the election, Ford promised to reduce council to 23. In his motion, he didn’t specify a number of

wards, but when he spoke, he repeatedly referred to 25 councillors as being a workable number.

“We have to align ourselves with the provincial and federal government, and 25 councillors can do the job,” said Ford.

Councillors on the committee voted for the recommendations, but some worried the move would simply invalidate the pro-

cess. Boundary changes can be appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board.

“You can make hay in some parts of Toronto by running down the idea of having a good number of members of council,” said Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks.

“The actual evidence is that if you jump on that bandwagon you’re going to wind up wasting money.

We should do this right, be thoughtful about it, and have a traceable public participation program that ensures the people who are actually in charge have a strong, clear voice.”

The matter will go to the June meeting of Toronto Council.

Patches an affectionate, friendly dog looking for new home Patches was surrendered to a shelter by his owners when he was two years old.

He had been overlooked by adopters for more than a year when an outreach email was distributed to numerous dog rescues in an effort to spring Patches from the shelter.

His picture and story touched the volunteers at Collie Rescue Network and although Patches doesn’t remotely resemble a collie dog, the rescue extended its reach and took the dog into its program.

A mix of foxhound, terrier and whippet, Patches weighs just under 40 pounds and is described as medium-energy, a true gentleman, albeit an extreme squirrel chaser.

He is housetrained, not destructive when left alone and only barks when strangers come to the door.

He’s a little timid of new people, especially men and children, and will back away when frightened; with people he has become

lorraine houston critter chatter familiar with he is affectionate and loves to cuddle.

Patches is good with other dogs, both small and large, and is currently in a foster home with cats. He would be best suited to a home in a rural or suburban area as loud downtown city traffic and crowds are overwhelming and intimidating for Patches.

His foster mom feels that a home without small children would be best.

Their box full of toys keeps Simone busy as she scatters them everywhere each day while amusing herself with her favourites.

They can often be seen grooming each other.

Angelo and Simone are indoor cats who are goodnatured and affectionate.

Ford opposes Metrolinx transit funding options

“I support developing new rapid transit, and streetcars are not rapid

transit. What I do not support is the province’s plan to slap new taxes on the backs of Ontarians. They call them revenue tools, but we all know it’s a fancy name for taxes.”

Ford referred to the recent debate at council, which took place against his will, that nevertheless rejected all options for revenue tools and demanded the province fund two new, unplanned subway lines.

“Toronto Council took a firm

position last month – they stood beside me and said no to these new taxes,” said Ford, who had hoped to forestall the debate on revenue tools until Tuesday’s meeting of the Executive Committee.

“Yet the province is moving ahead without consulting the public, with a plan to hit Toronto families for taxes that will cost $500 to $1,000 a year if not more.”

Ford said the provincial govern-

ment should “lead by example” and deal with its own deficit before discussing new taxes.

“Until the premier exhausts all other options available to her I will not support any of these new taxes on the residents of Toronto who are telling me, we just can’t afford it.”
