Crew donates to Liscombe family ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

A North York family has been left with only the clothes on their back after a fire ripped through their home last week. Alverine Liscombe, a married mother of three, said the blaze destroyed all of her possessions, including family photos. The photos she misses most are those of her late grandmother. “That was close to my heart,” she said. Liscombe woke up to the sound of fire alarms around 3 a.m. Nov. 5. “I ran down the stairs to see if it was something minor that I could deal with on my own,” Liscombe said. “When I realized it’s not something minor, I started waking up my family and telling them to get out.” The three-alarm fire, at 79 Gosford Blvd. in the Jane and Finch area, started in the basement. Firefighter Janos Csepreghi was on the second truck to arrive on scene. “The entire house from basement all the way up to the second floor was fully charged with smoke. You can’t even see your hand in front of your face,” he said. “Right when we got there, it was stated that all the >>>no, page 3

Former Willowdale MP makes second bid for federal Liberal leadership Former Willowdale MP Martha Hall Findlay is taking another crack at leading the federal Liberal party. She made her announcement in Calgary yesterday. Hall Findlay ran for the leadership in 2006 to replace former leader and prime minister Paul Martin. She was eliminated on the first ballot and threw her support behind Stephane Dion, who eventually won

the race. Hall Findlay was elected Willowdale MP in a byelection in March 2008 following the retirement of longtime Willowdale MP Jim Peterson. She was re-elected in 2008 but was defeated by Conservative challenger Chungsen Leung in 2011. She is now an executive fellow at the University of Calgary.

Joe Bennet and firefighter Jackson Harrell get together Tuesday afternoon during the presentation of a cheque from the Toronto Fire Service to the Liscombe family after they lost their belongings in a Nov. 5 house fire. Bishop-Brace and Hurley are providing the Liscombes with shelter in their home.

No injuries reported in townhouse fire >>>from page 1 occupants were out of the house, but we can’t take a statement like that for granted so we had to do a full search of the entire house.” Csepreghi said everything in the basement got “melted and charred” while the rest

of the townhouse sustained “extensive smoke and water damage.” The Liscombe family escaped injury, but they didn’t have insurance. The family is staying temporarily at a neighbour’s house. “I lost all my belongings,”

Liscombe said. “There’s no word to describe it. It’s very hard.” On Tuesday afternoon, the Toronto Professional Fire Fighter’s Association gave the family a $500 cheque and access to free furniture. “They were all great,” Liscombe said of the fire-

fighters. The cause of the blaze is believed to be an electrical problem. Csepreghi said the firefighter’s association will be in touch with Liscombe “over the course of the next week and help her out as she moves through this.”

Police have charged a 20-yearold Toronto man with 11 offences after two women were sexually assaulted in the Avenue Road and Lawrence Avenue area Monday. The suspect, accompanied by his mother, turned himself into 12 Division around 1:30 a.m. yesterday. Speaking to reporters at police headquarters on Wednesday, Det. Sgt. LeeAnn Papizewski of the sex crimes unit said the attack appeared to be random. Two women, aged 25 and 30, were sexually assaulted inside their home after a man, posing as a newspaper salesman, brandished a knife and forced his way in at 10 a.m.

The attacker suffered a torso wound and one victim was taken to hospital for undisclosed injuries. Jewelry and cellphones were stolen during the incident, Papizewski said. Witnesses onboard a TTC bus alerted police to possible footage of the suspect, which showed clear images of the accused, she said. Alaa Ali Hejazi has been charged with two counts of forcible confinement, break and enter commit, two counts of threaten bodily harm, two counts of sexual assault with a weapon, two counts of robbery, threatening death, and possession of property obtained by crime.

Canadian Air and Space Museum seeks storage facility for planes >>>from page 1 in front of Ontario Place. The two aircraft have remained at CASM’s old location inside Downsview Park since the museum’s closure in September 2011, but it’s now time to find a new site, McDougall said. “Downsview Park has been very accommodating,” he said. “After the fuss (of the

closure) died down they couldn’t have been more helpful. We owe thanks to them. It’s their space and they rightfully want their space. Downsview Park said they would pay for the move, but there is nowhere to move to. The museum doesn’t have money.” Ten businesses were served eviction notices by D ow n s v i e w Pa rk i n

September 2011, indicating space must be vacated by March 31 to make way for a four-pad hockey rink, set to open in September 2013. plans for new museum CASM is eyeing a potential new home on the south side of Lester B. Pearson In t e r n a t i o n a l A i r p o r t , McDougall said, adding plans

to construct a new museum on the empty field would be some time down the road. “We’re looking for a temporary home and we need to do it as quickly as possible,” he said. “We’re talking about more than simply a museum. It reflects a hugely significant part of the industrial and military history in the area.” CASM, formerly the

Toronto Aerospace Museum, was housed in the original 1929 home of the de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd. and also the original home of Canada’s leading space technology company best known as SPAR, according to the museum’s website. It also housed several artifacts and planes, including a replica Avro Arrow.

Infrastructure funding must become priority A

coalition of municipal and business groups working to put the pressure on the federal government to come up with a national funding plan to deal with growing transit and infrastructure needs has made it clear that cities such as Toronto can’t wait much longer. The Municipal Infrastructure Forum was created by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) just over a year ago and is made our view up of representatives of municipal governments, business, chambers of commerce and other groups such Leadership as the Insurance Board of Canada needed from and the Canadian Union of Public Employees. local MPs At a press conference in Toronto, speakers such as Toronto Board of Trade CEO Carol Wilding, FCM president Karen Leibovici and Robert Tremblay, from the Insurance Board of Canada, talked about the toll aging infrastructure systems are taking on the city. “Our overstretched networks are becoming a major barrier to our growing economy,” Wilding said. “Toronto’s problems of gridlock and poor transit connectivity are among the worst of any major urban centre in the world.” Tremblay also offered a warning about how Toronto would fare if it had been hit by a storm similar to what New York City had to deal with when super storm Sandy recently hit, and it wasn’t a pretty picture. He said Toronto’s water and sewer systems are “underdesigned” and not built to withstand instances of extreme weather. “That’s what the real challenge is, making sure our infrastructure can withstand the new climatic realities,” Tremblay said. Missing from this equation, however, is clear direction from the federal government. What’s needed is guaranteed, long-term funding that recognizes the importance of these needs. These are investments in our future the federal government must take the lead on. Provincial and municipal governments also have a huge role to play, but the leadership starts with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Toronto residents should be asking their MPs, especially those who are members of the Conservative government, where they stand and what they are going to do. A sewer and water system that can’t deal with major storms puts our safety at risk. Congested roads and a public transit system that’s decades out of date puts our jobs and economic future at risk. Toronto’s MPs must address these issues and start showing some political leadership. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. To the editor: Remembrance Day has come and gone. We give thanks to those who fought in the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, Afghanistan and peace keeping for our rights and freedom. We honour them and remember those who gave the supreme sacrifice by wearing a red poppy. But the fight for our rights and freedom did not start with the Boer War. In 1812, Canadian volunteers and British soldiers joined forces to fight an invading army. After the battle of Lundy’s Lane, it was noticed by the locals that red geraniums were growing over the battlefield. When the War of 1812 ended, citizens started to wear red geraniums to honour those who fought and to remember the ones who gave their lives. In 2013, let us bring back the tradition of wearing a red geranium. Robert Heath

I

dropped by my old stomping grounds at Dick Duff Arena on the weekend to catch some hockey and on the way in I was almost bowled over by a father and son scurrying by. Dad was lugging the two goalie sticks, pads and hockey bag belonging to his 10-year-old who was carrying only a cellphone. They made a mad dash for the dressing room. But the door was blocked by a burly gentleman who had coach written all over him – and on the top left corner of his jacket, too. Coach: “Well, well. Look who finally decided to grace us with their presence.” Father: “Uh, I can explain, Coach...” Coach: “If you don’t mind Dad, I was talking to Junior. Now Junior, my watch clearly says 4:30 and your designated arrival time for a five o’clock game is four o’clock. Now, what did I tell you about being late?”

but seriously

jamie wayne

Son: “Don’t be late, Coach.” Coach: “Could you speak up a tad? The acoustics for lame excuses are awful in this arena.” Son: “DON’T BE LATE. Coach.” Father: “Really, I can explain, Coach...” Coach: “If you don’t mind Dad, I was talking to Junior. Now Junior, over the years how many times do you figure I’ve told you not to be late?” Son: “About a gazillion times, Coach. Give or take a bajillion.” Coach: “Interesting. Yet, you’re still late. And what happens when you’re late?” Son: “You let down the

team, Coach. You let down yourself, Coach. You let down the coach, Coach.” Coach: “Is that it?” Son: “Nope. You also let down the game, Coach. You let down the country, Coach. You let down mankind, Coach. You let down the universe Coach. And you let down the great beyond too, Coach.” Coach: “Not that drivel, Junior. I meant the important stuff, the consequences. What are the repercussions if one is late?” Son: “100 pushups, 100 sit-ups, 100 pull-ups and...” Father: “A hundred pushups, sit-ups and pull-ups? Come on, he’s only 10.” Coach: “I hate to break it to you, Dad, they’re for you, not him. Last I checked you were the one piloting the SUV that brought him here late.” Son: “But Coach ...” Coach: “I was talking to Senior, Junior. Any time you’re ready, Dad.”

Son: “But Coooooach...” Coach: “Oh, alright. What is it, Junior?” Son: “You left out the best part – the 100 wind sprints. Forward and backward. You interrupted before I could finish. How could you forget them? You’re getting soft in your old age, Coach. You know what happens when you get soft?” Coach: “Yeah, yeah. I know, I know, I know. You let down the team, yourself, the coach, the game, mankind, and the universe.” Son: “Apparently you don’t know. You left out the great beyond. Talk about rookie mistakes. Shame on you, Coach. Don’t let it happen again. Now, step on it Dad. I’ve got a game to play.” n Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. The federal government will contribute more than $5,000 to restore the Canadian Jewish War Veterans Memorial. “Our government is committed to encouraging Canadians, young and old, to remember and honour veterans and the brave service men and women who serve our country,” Steven Blaney, minister of veterans affairs, said in a release Friday, Nov. 9. “Local war memorials, such as the Canadian Jewish War Veterans Memorial, acknowledge and reflect the appreciation for our veterans of current and past generations.” The government will contribute $5,300 to its restoration, which is erected in memory of Jewish Canadians who fought during the Second World War and later conflicts. Members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256 (General Wingate) will add two new structures to the existing Canadian Jewish War Veterans Memorial in Mount Sinai

Memorial Park, located on Wilson Avenue, east of Keele Street. The new structures will commemorate Jewish Canadians who lost their lives during the First World War. “I commend the members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256 for their dedication to honouring veterans,” Eglinton-Lawrence MP Joe Oliver said in a release. “Helping community groups restore local memorials is one way our government is working to ensure young Canadians and their families will learn about and remember the achievements and sacrifices of our veterans.” Funding for this initiative is provided through the Cenotaph/ Monument Restoration Program. Through this program, the federal government works in partnership with community groups and local organizations to ensure that cenotaphs and monuments honouring our nation’s heroes are conserved to the highest standard of care and dignity.

IF YOU WORK IN ONTARIO, THIS IS YOUR FIGHT. On September 11, 2012, the Ontario Liberal government passed Bill 115, the Putting Students First Act, 2012.

Bill 115 is undemocratic, unconstitutional, and unprecedented. s It takes away the democratic rights of teachers and education professionals to bargain collectively. s It places the government beyond the reach of the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Ontario Labour Relations Act, and even the courts. s It takes local decision-making away from school boards and puts it in the hands of the provincial government. That’s why we’re standing against Bill 115. It sets a dangerous precedent for all Ontarians. In fact, the government has already threatened other public sector workers with similar legislation. As teachers, we teach your children to stand up for their principles. Today, we ask you to do the same.

What can you do to help? Join us in standing up for democratic rights. Let your MPP know that Bill 115 must be repealed.

Toronto’s transit and infrastructure needs are critical: municipal forum RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A dedicated national funding plan for infrastructure would go a long way toward addressing Toronto’s chronic gridlock issues, says a spokesperson for a coalition of economic and municipal groups. Speaking on behalf of the Municipal Infrastructure Forum (MIF), Carol Wilding wants more money from the federal government to put toward the nation’s deteriorating core infrastructure such as roadways and transit systems, which the CEO of the Toronto Board of Trade believes is creating rampant congestion in the city and resulting in productivity losses in the billions of dollars. “Our overstretched networks are becoming a major barrier to our growing economy,” said Wilding, from the Toronto Board of Trade’s downtown office, which hosted a press conference for MIF last Thursday. “Toronto’s problems of gridlock and poor transit connectivity are among the worst

of any major urban centre in the world.” While the Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper is scheduled to release a infrastructure funding plan by 2014 – to replace the existing $8.8-billion Building Canada plan – the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), which spearheaded the formation of MIF more than a year ago, wants to see money allocated as soon as next year’s budget, to be tabled by the spring. “Canada cannot afford to lose a construction season,” said Karen Leibovici, president of FCM. “A new long-term plan is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reverse the long decline in our local infrastructure and to keep Canada on the road to jobs and growth.” Robert Tremblay from the Insurance Bureau of Canada, who also spoke at the press conference, said damage incurred from the Sandy super storm that ravaged the U.S. east coast in late October caused around $20 billion in insurance claims.

He warned a similar weather event touching down in Toronto would be devastating for the local economy since the city’s water and sewer infrastructure, as well as its road networks, are “underdesigned” and not built to withstand the impact of extreme weather. “The issue here is not just inconvenience like basement flooding,” said Tremblay, who is the director of research for the Insurance Board of Canada. “The fact is, infrastructure underpins every economic activity. Wilding said she hoped to see a guarantee from the federal government for transit funding spanning decades to ensure completion of the provincial Big Move transportation plan. “Businesses will tell you the number one issue is transit and transportation,” said Wilding. “It’s a significant regional challenge.” Of the estimated $50 billion it would cost to complete the plan, only $10 billion has thus far been allocated by the provincial government.

t’s been a traumatic week for cyclists in downtown Toronto. The city’s transportation department kicked off the week attempting to remove a pair of bike lanes on Jarvis Street. Members of the cycling community responded by doing their best to stop that work from taking place. The fight over the Jarvis bike lanes continues, an ugly echo of a very ugly election campaign in which the lanes themselves became a symbol of the very symbolic war on the car. For those on the “car” side of that war, their removal is a victory – the knocking down of the Berlin Bike Lane, as it were. Of course, in addition to its properties as a symbolic battlefield, the Jarvis Street bike lanes also had a practical application: they were a piece of a larger infrastructure that makes it safer for cyclists to travel north and south to the east of Yonge Street. And to that end, the proponents of removing the

THE CITY

david nickle

lanes offered up a placating alternative. Just a few blocks further to the east, the city would take the bike lanes on Sherbourne Street and turn them into fully separated lanes. The argument there was that full separation from traffic would make an even safer route for cyclists than the Jarvis lanes, which are only lines of paint. I’m not so sure that’s the case. I’ve ridden those lanes as a commuter, and observed them as a pedestrian. And it seems to me the separated lanes are more of a comfort to drivers on Sherbourne than they are to cyclists. The entire run isn’t finished, and the part I’ve ridden is the very northward section, from Wellesley Street to Bloor Street. The

lanes vary between raised sections of curb about the height of the sidewalk, open spots where buses and taxis can pull up to the curb, and sections of road blocked off by speed-hump-sized raised curbs. The lanes are a little wider than a standard bike lane, making it possible for considerate cyclists to pass one another, with care. It is considerably more difficult to get around a car that has pulled onto the bike lane: crossing the curb that a car can mount easily would likely result in a tumble for anyone but a very experienced cyclist. Under the current administration, separated bike lanes in the downtown core along with expanded recreational trails look to be the future of cycling infrastructure. And that infrastructure works very well to get cyclists off the roads now dedicated to cars. n David Nickle is The Mirror’s city hall reporter. His column appears every Thursday. FIRST DRIVE: NISSAN SENTRA 2013 Sentra grows in size, still sips fuel

Classified as a compact sedan, this photo shows the 2013 Nissan Sentra is really mid-size especially in terms of passenger volume, but with a starting price of $14,848.

Always a stable seller, Nissan’s Sentra has trailed the likes of Civic, Mazda3 and Corolla but that’s about to change. Nissan is currently in the midst of launching a whole slew of new products starting with the Pathfinder reviewed on these pages and now the seventh-generation, 2013 Sentra. Nissan makes it easy for buyers to choose with one engine, two transmissions and four trim levels. The power plant is Nissan’s familiar 1.8-litre inline four-cylinder driving the front wheels producing 130 hp and 128 lb/ft of torque through a six-speed manual (on the base S and SV) or“next generation” Xtronic CVT. Pricing on the four trims starts with the

entry-level S M6/CVT at $14,848/$17,548, the SV M6/CVT at $17,548/$18,848, the SR CVT at $19,948 and topping out with the SL CVT at $22,998. Nissan was one of the early adopters of CVTs and remains the leading proponent of the system. The CVT used on the Sentra is equipped with a sub-planetary gear that contributes to improved fuel efficiency at high speeds and better response at lower speeds. Fuel economy with the CVT is rated at 6.6 L/100 km city, 4.9L/100 km highway and a claimed class-leading 5.8L/100 km combined all on regular. The manual is rated at 7.5/5.5L/100 km city/highway. Note the CVT is better on gas than the manual, which Nissan points

to as proof they are on the right track with the CVT. Nissan starting phasing out automatics 20 years ago and to date has installed more than nine million CVTs in their vehicles. Another factor is weight, which is reduced by 150 lb over the outgoing model plus a rather slippery 0.29 drag coefficient, which is surprising due to its largish size for a compact. With the CVT you can select either “Eco” or “Sport” or just leave it in “Normal” using rocker switches on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. Select Eco and it changes the valve timing and transmission mapping for improved fuel economy. Go to Sport and the reverse is true with a noticeable pickup

in power. I was lucky enough to have a Sentra to myself for a day with no restriction on where to go. I grabbed a SV CVT (which will probably be the volume model) and headed west towards the coast from my hotel at the north end of Napa Valley in California. On the high-speed Highway 101, I went to Sport to get on the freeway and the engine responded well and without the “rubber banding” that so dogged early CVTs. On the highway at the posted 65 mph limit, I pushed the Eco button and the engine immediately dropped 300 rpm like I had put on the brakes slightly. Throttle response was sluggish compared to Sport but the tach proved less fuel was being consumed. Now I did most of the driving in Eco on roads that were primarily 35-55 mph but the fuel number, considering this was real world, impressed me. The 2013 Sentra is slightly longer and lower than the 2012 model, but looks bigger. It has been restyled with the twin arrow grille treatment now being used by both Nissan and Infiniti, overall it is a pleasant design but not bold. Inside it’s another story with available leather and maple wood trim but it’s the instruments that stand out for their clarity and simplicity. The main gauges are Nissan’s Fine Vision electroluminescent design that are backlit even in daylight, providing a highquality look that is also easy to read thanks also to the large numbers for aging eyes. But it is in the back seat where the Sentra shines with legroom of 949.96 mm and that’s with the front seats all the way back. The rear seat is a standard 60/40 split folding design, offering versatile access to the 428 litres (15.1 cu ft) of trunk space, which is 57 litres larger than the 2012 Sentra. The SV model I drove was fitted with the NissanConnect system with Navigation that includes a Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant. It not only reads incoming text messages and allows drivers to reply without taking their hands off of the steering

wheel, but also gives real-time fuel prices, flight times and weather updates. It also allows Streaming Audio via Bluetooth and a largish 5.8-inch touch-screen monitor. I never text anytime to anybody, but I did use the Navi system extensively. I know the highways and byways of Napa/Sonoma pretty well and this was a chance to go down a number of roads I’d seen before but was afraid of getting lost on, as the rolling hills in this area look relatively the same in all directions. Acquisition in real time between where I was on the road and where it showed I was on the screen is almost instantaneous, which shows just how far these systems have progressed even on economy cars. At one point I got turned around in the Town of Petaluma, home of the World Arm-Wresting Championship, which put it on the map. Zooming in and out with the system, I found the right road out of town as simple as that. At the end of the day, I came away impressed by not just the mileage but the ease of handling on a wide range of road surfaces and speed limits. Like the transformed Pathfinder CUV, the 2013 Sentra shows Nissan is getting its compact contender back in high gear. – Jim Robinson Metroland Media ■ AT A GLANCE: BODY STYLE: Compact sedan. FIRST LOOK: HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE 3.8 GT 2013 T.he 2013 Genesis Coupe gets a serious power boost. Add to that a more aggressive exterior design with new front fascia, grille, headlights, fog lights and hood design and you end up with a Genesis Coupe that has significant improvements for 2013.

The rear of the refreshed Hyundai Genesis Coupe shows off new LED taillights. The interior of the 2013 Genesis Coupe is attractively laid out, with a nice mix of soft-touch materials, textures and metallic accents, along with electroluminescent instruments.

The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is an affordable performance car aimed at the driving enthusiast. The big news is a boost in power from 306 to 348 hp for the 3.8-litre engine and 210 to 274 hp for the 2.0T. The GT comes with 19-inch alloy wheels and a bright red Brembo brake package.

This V6 makes 348 hp and 295 lb/ft of torque. The refreshed Genesis Coupe sports a more menacing demeanour with an aggressively redesigned front fascia, grille, headlights, LED daytime running lights, fog lights, and hood.

■411 ON THE GENESIS: Hyundai’s re-do of the Genesis Coupe for 2013 is much more than the nip here and a tuck there. To start with, the 2013 Genesis Coupe gets a serious power boost. Thanks in part to direct injection technology, the 3.8-litre Lambda DOHC V6 engine in the GT gains 42 horsepower to 348 and 29 lb/ft of torque to 295 that will propel the car from 0-100 km in the low five-second range. Add to that a more aggressive exterior design with new front fascia, grille, headlights, fog lights and hood design and you end up with a Genesis Coupe that has significant improvements for 2013. Other new features are retuned, low-velocity control suspension dampers, electroluminescent gauge cluster with information display, telescopic steering wheel added to the tilt function, power lumber adjustments for the driver’s seat and redesigned centre stack. The base 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine is also significantly more powerful with a new twin-scroll turbocharger and a larger, more thermally efficient intercooler. A trackready 2.0 T R-Spec model includes high-performance equipment like Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels with summer tires, limited slip differential and a stiffer suspension. A 2.0T Premium model upgrades the interior of the standard 2.0T and adds items like touch-screen navigation system, 360-watt Infinity audio system, leather

seats with two-stage front heaters, and power sunroof. The cabin of the Genesis Coupe has a much more upscale look and feel than before. Among the new trim features is a stitched seam on the dashboard, while soft touch materials have a lower sheen for a more luxurious look. On the centre stack is a multigauge cluster with instant fuel economy, torque level (3.8 GT models) or turbocharged booster pressure (2.0T models) and oil temperature. The sport front seats have deep side bolsters for improved lateral support. Outside, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels on the Genesis Coupe are all new for this year as are LED taillights. Even with the more muscular look, the car’s proportions are unchanged with short front and rear overhangs, creating a wedge-like profile with broad shoulders and a wide stance. Spring, damper and bushing ratings have all been recalibrated this time around for better road feel, more precise body motion control and best of all, more ride comfort. The 3.8 GT has a track-tuned suspension that offers firmer front and rear spring rates, and even with the firmer suspension, ride comfort shows a huge improvement. The Genesis Coupe was already a great car, but with the improvements for 2013, Hyundai has made it even better. – Metroland Media

Stretch your fuel and maximize your dollar There are a couple of simple things that can be done to ensure one gets the very best fuel economy and life out of any vehicle. This is an important consideration given that, according to Natural Resources Canada, the average age of the typical Canadian car is seven years old.1 It all starts with routine maintenance. Ensuring your vehicle is running at its very best not only improves efficiency, it can pay big dividends down the road. Here are two important considerations that can maximize your fuel dollars: 1. The most overlooked factor is the effect an underinflated tire has on fuel consumption and safety. If you doubt the extra workload this places on the engine, try pushing a car with a flat tire – it is not going anywhere quickly. To begin with, most tires

lose about one psi per month naturally. Temperature also affects pressure – there's a one-psi reduction for every 10-degree drop in temperature It may not seem like much, but according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, it adds up quickly – around 4.5 billion litres of fuel are wasted each year in North America because of underinflated tires Of more concern is the increased risk of a blowout – the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) says 660 highway fatalities and 33,000 injuries each year are due to under-inflated tires. 2. The enemy of engine efficiency is engine “gunk, or harmful carbon deposits left behind on intake valves and fuel injectors. This gunk acts like a sponge, absorbing and trapping gasoline. According to a recent Cana-

dian survey, 85% of mechanics responded that they believe that the top benefit of using a high-quality gasoline is optimized engine performance. By simply selecting a highquality gasoline, you can cut down on the build-up of engine gunk. Tests prove that nitrogen Enriched gasolines can protect your engine from gunk and can even clean up gunk left behind by lower quality gasolines. And a clean engine performs better and will help to maximize the fuel efficiency of your engine. There is an old adage that remains true– a gram of prevention is worth a kilogram of cure. Preventative maintenance, ensuring that the tires are properly inflated and using the right gasoline will both save money and extend the life of any vehicle.

Toyota’s Ontario operation builds five-millionth vehicle in Canada Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC) built its five millionth car in Canada on Nov. 5, a red Lexus RX350. “From humble beginnings, today TMMC is a globally respected manufacturing operation that can produce more than 500,000 vehicles per year, says TMMC Chairman Ray Tanguay. “Our success has allowed us to create more good jobs for Canadians and become a better corporate citizen for

our community. TMMC began operations in Cambridge, Ontario in 1988 in a plant designed to build just 50,000 vehicles per year, approximately the same number of vehicles Toyota sold in Canada at that time. Today, TMMC has the capacity to build more than 500,000 vehicles annually at plants in Cambridge, Ontario and Woodstock, Ontario. Toyota now builds more than two vehicles in Canada for

every vehicle Toyota sells in Canada. Currently, Toyota builds five products in Canada: Toyota Corolla and Toyota Matrix, built in the TMMC North Plan (Cambridge); Toyota RAV4, and RAV4 EV, built in TMMC West Plant (Woodstock) and; Lexus RX350 built in TMMC South Plant (Cambridge). Current employment has grown from the level of 1000 anticipated in 1988 to more than 6,500. – Metroland Media

On Nov. 5, employees at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC) in Cambridge celebrated the building of TMMC’s five millionth vehicle, a red Lexus RX350.

Toyota raises the mid-size bar The 2012 Camry’s form, overall, is simple and modern with clean, crisp sheet metal adorned by a subtle character line rising along the shoulder. Front and rear roof lines are steeply raked for a more slippery profile, and from either end, the Camry emphasizes a wider and lower stance. The look is highly impacted by trim levels, and between gas and hybrid models there are seven. This starts with the LE and moves up through SE and XLE grades, and in-

cludes three engine choices: a 2.5litre inline four cylinder (178 hp and 170 lb/ft of torque), a 3.5-litre V6 (as tested) and a 2.5-litre with hybrid synergy drive. All benefit from numerous design and engineering changes that, for starters, add up to a more spacious, more comfortable interior. By designing a new dashboard, reshaping and moving the seats, and using a ‘lean car’ approach by more closely fitting the interior trim, Toyota engineers have carved

out added room and have improved visibility. Camry now offers more soft textures along with chrome accents, optional woodgrain trim, available leather seating, and stitching along the instrument panel, adding to its premium look and feel. Comfort too has improved with higher seatbacks and longer cushions. All models now get standard 60/40 split folding rear seats, where youĂll find loads of room to really stretch your legs. These seats, with

their ribbed plastic backing, can be dropped by a remote release in the trunk, increasing its 425-litre capacity. All Camry models also get such standard items as keyless entry, power windows, cruise control, four-spoke tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, power heated mirrors, projector headlamps and a six-speaker AM/FM/ CD/MP3/WMA, audio system with aux and USB inputs, Bluetooth and 6.1 inch display. Combined with better aerody-

namics, a more rigid body structure, and redesigned suspension, the 2012 Camry provides not only a hushed interior (not unlike its Lexus sibling), but feels rock solid, and with a smoothness that you’d expect in the premium segment.

Hybrid powers up 2013 VW Jetta Not content with offering affordable low consumption gasoline and diesel cars, Volkswagen has added a third option with the 2013 Jetta Hybrid. You would think a small displacement diesel and gas vehicle would be enough for the fuel efficiency conscious, but Volkswagen is convinced increasing numbers of buyers feel some form of hybrid should be their next choice. A 1.4-litre inline four-cylinder turbo direct injection gasoline engine producing 150 hp and 184 lb/ft of torque powers the Jetta Hybrid. Combined with a 20 kW (27 hp, 114 lb/ft) electric motor for a total 170 hp and the same 184 lb/ft of torque. â– AT A GLANCE: BODY STYLE: Compact hybrid sedan. DRIVE METHOD: front-engine/electric motor, front-wheel-drive. ENGINE: 1.4-litre four-cylinder inline turbocharged (150 hp, 184 lb/ft of torque); 20kW (27 hp, 114 lb/ft); combined 170 hp/184 lb ft FUEL ECONOMY: (Est.) 4.4L/100 km combined CARGO CAPACITY: 11.3 cu ft (0.32 cu m PRICE: Trendline, $27,875; Comfortline $30,175; Highline $34,025. WEBSITE: www.vw.ca

According to VW, the Jetta Hybrid uses about 20 per cent less fuel than an equivalently sized sedan with a gasoline engine. In city stop/go driving that goes up to about 30 per cent. In pure electric mode that Jetta Hybrid can hit up to 6070 km/h and travel up to 2.0 km depending on driving conditions. The hybrid system borrows technology from the Touareg Hybrid CUV using a clutch that decouples the gasoline engine when in electric mode or “coasting. Besides regenerative power being routed back the battery when braking, when the driver lifts off the accelerator at speeds up to 100 km/h and coasts, this also serves to provide power to the lithium-ion battery. The 220-volt lithium-ion battery is located under the rear seat and weighs 163 lb. By watching the weight, the Jetta Hybrid comes in at just 221 lb more than the standard sedan. Even the seven-speed dual clutch transmission is trimmed down in size and weight. There are about three separate ways of monitoring your fuel conservation. When driving, it is hard to take you eyes off the ePower meter that is part of the overall hybrid energy flow display integrated into the multi-info readout found in the main instrument cluster. Here’s where it gets cool. The Power Meter is an additional mul-

Protect. Maintain. Save.

tifunctional display that replaces the tach on the left side of the instrument cluster. It informs the driver of the momentary operating state of the Jetta Hybrid. You can watch the tach needle swing up and down as the engine kicks in or when regenerative power is replenishing the battery. Lastly, when you give it the gas and the battery adds its thrust, the needle swings all the way to the right in the boost mode. But wait, there’s more. Part of the audio system also helps coach the driver with messages on the audio display.

For instance, the audio display’s Zero Emissions menu offers a graphic of the car’s zero emissions driving time. The zero emissions values are shown in the form of percentages in a bar diagram, where the measurement interval of one bar represents one minute of driving. A value of 100 per cent means that the car was driven with zero emissions throughout the driving minute, i.e., with the TSI engine shut off. The effective time period for this is 30 minutes. Lastly the audio monitor can also give an instantaneous depiction of the flow of energy back in forth between t

he engine and battery. The Jetta still boasts the biggest interior passenger volume in the compact segment and, despite the battery back intruding into the trunk, cargo volume is still adequate at 11.3 cu ft. There is no doubt electrification of the automobile is no longer a novelty but part of the route to greener, cleaner transportation. With the Hybrid added to the gasoline and diesel Jetta lineup, Volkswagen is on the right road to that goal.

‘Twelve Angry Jurors’ a classic courtroom drama W

hen Reginald Rose’s courtroom drama premiered on television in 1954 it was called Twelve Angry Men, but over the years it has been adapted to allow women jurors. Usually the jurors were all of one gender, and titled Twelve Angry Women when appropriate. A new dynamic was introduced by author Sherman L. Sergel when the play was adapted to allow a mixed-gender jury and renamed once again: Twelve Angry Jurors. It is this version Stage Centre Productions is presenting at York Woods Library Theatre. It’s still the tension-filled deliberation Rose created, but now has the added dimension of having five women added to the mix. There are a few minor changes in the lines and references, but it is still an indictment against personal prejudice. Passions still boil over and some jury members are pushed almost to

violence as they deliberate the fate of a 17-year-old boy accused of murder. Though the unnamed boy is never seen on stage, he is a vivid and important character, and the viewer sees him through the eyes of those deliberating his fate. Rose’s point is that each member of this jury is guided by his or her personal biases based on the boy’s background, age and troubled past and filtered through their own experiences. Frank Keenan plays juror number 8, who begins the session expressing his reasonable doubt about the boy’s guilt. Keenan plays the role with a calm, thoughtful manner, never implying he knows better but simply trying to articulate his concerns to an often hostile group that initially just

wants to get this decision made. Judy Gans plays the foreman, trying to keep order and prevent violence from invading the room. The most vitriolic juror is played with tremendous passion by Robin Philips, bringing an almost frightening intensity to the role. Her final moments on stage are a consummate study of performing multiple emotions all at once. The entire ensemble cast is terrific at creating realitybased performances. You believe right from the start these 12 people are all from different backgrounds and are starting the session as strangers. Director Tony Rein uses the claustrophobic set to tremendous advantage, and has worked with the performers to create one rising line of tension throughout the play. The problem with this iconic story is that over the years it has served as a basis for a number of

Committee votes to allow Toronto stores to open on Victoria Day DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Stores in Toronto will be able to open their doors on Victoria Day, but that will be it for the expansion of holiday shopping in Toronto, if council goes along with economic development committee recommendations at the end of the month. The recommendations represent a major backpedaling from a staff recommendation to the committee – one that would have extended holiday shopping letting retailers stay open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day and Thanksgiving Day. Stores would have stayed closed on Christmas Day, New Years Day, Family Day, Easter Sunday and Good Friday. The recommendations were a result of an extensive review of holiday shopping standards province-wide. The city conducted public consultations and also surveyed other municipalities. Toronto has been in control of holiday shopping rules since 2006, and the survey has been

going on since then. Staff found that in Ontario, 81 municipalities allow holiday shopping, and the number is increasing. And there is also holiday shopping allowed in several designated tourist districts in Toronto: the Eaton Centre, Queen’s Quay Terminal and Bloor Yorkville. The staff recommendations came after retailers in other parts of the city, as well as mall owners, urged the city to create a more level playing field for holiday opening. But the committee heard from retail workers and unions representing them, who argued that wide-open holiday shopping would lead to minimum-wage-earning retail workers losing precious time with their families. “Retail workers see this as just another attack on their hard-earned rights,” said Roland Lapins, from a union representing grocery store workers. “The decision to open Sundays has simply diluted sales volume over a sevenday period. This will not make more available hours for workers, it just adds to

another day they must be available for work.” Retail worker Philippe Lavoie said as a young parttime worker he thought it would be impossible to refuse hours during statutory holidays that he would otherwise use to visit his father in Kingston. “If we made enough money to make ends meet, this would be a non-issue,” he said. “This may sound harsh but I feel like I’m being blackmailed.” Toronto-Danforth Councillor Mary Fragedakis, who chaired the subcommittee, said she received very little input from the public demanding that shopping be expanded. “A lot of people who have spoken to the issue told me that family is important to them, holidays are part of family and many consider them sacred,” she said. The committee also voted to allow larger pharmacies to remain open on holidays, in deference to several largerfootprint Shoppers Drug Mart franchises whose owners said they were being unfairly targeted.
