Muslim mother attacked, robbed in Flemingdon Park

An attack on a Muslim woman in the Flemingdon Park neighbourhood Monday is being investigated as being hate motivated, Toronto police said. The woman, wearing a hijab, was walking on Grenoble Drive when two males approached her and made derogatory comments around 3 p.m. Police said the males then kicked and punched the woman and tried to pull off her hijab. She was then robbed of her cellphone and money. A citizen flagged down passing police officers. Police didn’t release descriptions of the suspects, who fled the scene. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The woman was on her way to Grenoble Public School to pick up her son when the

attack occurred. “The allegations are that it was motivated by hate,” Const. Victor Kwong said. “It’s being investigated as being hate motivated.” However, Kwong noted police can’t officially designate the incident as a hate crime until a crown attorney has deemed it as such. Police are speaking to witnesses and checking security camera footage as part of the investigation. The Ahmadiyya Muslim community said in a news release that it is “appalled to learn about the malicious attack on a Canadian Muslim mother in Toronto.” “This hate crime has alarmed the community as the brazen assault occurred during broad daylight near her children’s school,” Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada said in the release.

TDSB education director takes on provincial role Donna Quan to work with York U. and lead study on barriers to student success FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com The Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) director of education has stepped down to lead a joint provincial government-York University project focusing on collecting Ontario-wide student and education-related data. Working for the ministry

of education, Donna Quan will collaborate with York University and Ontario’s school boards to further understand student populations and school communities, with the view to better identify and address potential barriers to academic success and wellbeing for all students in the province, according to a

TDSB release. Quan’s new post will take effect Monday, Dec. 14. Her contract with the TDSB would have been up in spring 2017. An interim director is expected to be appointed over the next month, with the focus then on finding a new permanent director. Quan will remain in her role as director of education until the new interim director has been appointed. “Donna has been a passionate and committed advo-

cate for public education for more than 30 years,” Robin Pilkey, chair of the TDSB, said in a release. “It has been a pleasure working with her and I wish her all the best as she moves to the next chapter of her career.” Quan began her education career in 1983 with teaching roles in a number of elementary schools, including experience in French immersion and out-of-province Native reserve schools. She became part of the North York Board

of Education in 1985, where she established one of the first non-profit, school-based Early Years Childcare Centres. Since then, she has held a number of senior positions within the TDSB, including principal and families of schools superintendent. Fo l l ow i n g a s t i n t a s interim director, Quan was named education director in October 2013 after Chris Spence resigned as director of education amid a plagiarism scandal in January of that year.

As more reports surface about the Islamic State group who claimed responsibility for the attacks, it’s in solidarity we stand up against the hate demonstrated through their violent acts that left more than 120 dead. While police have stepped up vigilance in public spaces in light of the Paris attacks, we need to be vigilant now in promoting, reaffirming and upholding the values of respect that’s crucial to living peacefully in a multicultural city such as Toronto. Just as the actions and beliefs of the Islamic State group aren’t representative of the local Muslim community, let’s make it clear the actions and beliefs of the few who are committing these hate crimes aren’t representative of all Torontonians. As Mayor John Tory noted in a vigil last weekend at Nathan Phillips Square, any retaliatory attacks only target the majority of Muslims who have nothing to do with the actions of extremists such as ISIS. “These people who perpetrated these attacks represent no one,” he said. “They are not representatives of any faith or nationality; they are people that have decided to take on a set of values and try to destroy our way of life.” It’s also important to heed the mayor’s statement that the city will run business as usual. For Toronto residents, that means living peacefully in a city that prides itself on its diversity.

Do not give in to the fear, the anger, the hate It was barely a year ago that the shootings in Ottawa made their lasting impact on security at Toronto City Hall. Since that day, security has stationed a single guard at the little-used north entrance to City Hall, which gives quick access to the elections office and the City Hall Press Gallery. The door is locked, and only those with key-cards can make it inside. Otherwise, there has been very little change – visible change, at any rate – in the way security is conducted at the centre of government of Canada’s largest city. There has been no local equivalent, certainly, of the federal Bill C-51 enacted by the old Harper government to broadly empower police and security agencies and to limit freedom and privacy rights, beyond the level that those agencies themselves deemed necessary. But for those working at City Hall? A well-mannered, unarmed guard watching a

david nickle the city door that’s used mainly by employees, and otherwise it is business as usual. Well, it’s not entirely business as usual. Over the course of that year, Toronto elected a new mayor, and in the course of the year that mayor, John Tory, was moved not by fear, but by laudable compassion for Syrian refugees, fleeing from the same terrorist gang that inspired the Ottawa shootings. Tory, unlike other political leaders in this and other countries, has made it clear Toronto will be a welcoming place. And so it is that as we consider last Friday’s atrocities in Paris, we do so from a city that has generally acquitted itself well in the face of terror, in a manner similar to those good Parisians who opened their doors to strangers, stranded in their locked-down city.

Torontonians too are good people, or at least have the demonstrated capacity for goodness, and courage, and levelheadedness. That capacity may well be tested. As I write this on Tuesday, police are investigating what appears to be a hate crime – the beating of a Muslim mother on her way to pick up a child from school in Don Mills. A mosque was also burned in Peterborough over the weekend. These things both seem to be hate crimes, brewed from that toxic combination of fear and anger. Given Torontonians’ general civility and levelheadedness, there is legitimate hope the incidents will be outliers. The question now is what we do next, and the answer immediately is to simply carry on with our lives as they had been. The terrorists would prefer that we not, that we show them a trembling respect by withdrawing from civic engagement, by

isolating the religious and cultural groups from whom they would like to recruit, by posting more guards, agreeing to laws that restrict our liberties even further. We should prefer to do otherwise. On Tuesday, the city announced an exceedingly generous private donation to build parkland in an ugly space underneath the Gardiner Expressway. That is cause for celebration. We will soon be welcoming new residents, first as refugees, then perhaps permanent residents and finally if they choose to remain, citizens. As this goes on, we will work and plan and sometimes squabble over how best to build transit and repair public housing and improve our lives here. That is a busy and virtuous schedule. There is no time in it for fear, and there is no place in it for hate.

Curtain Call Players ‘A Christmas Carol’ makes you feel blessed that you saw it Curtain Call Players timed the arrival of their fall production of A Christmas Carol – The Musical to open the same week Santa Claus arrived in town. Each season there are many differing productions of this oft-told tale and thanks to a winning cast and effective direction and choreography, this one proves to be most enjoyable. This musical retelling of Charles Dickens’ immortal tale enjoyed a 10-year run in annual seasonal instalments at Madison Square Garden in New York. Later it was filmed for television with Kelsey Grammer cast as Scrooge. In Curtain Call’s production, Barry Flynn portrays the miserly Scrooge taking us on a journey as the bitter old man redeems his soul. Flynn brings the character to vivid life creating a compelling Scrooge whose development is a pleasure to follow. Along the way we meet Scrooge as a boy (played by Quinn Mansbridge), as a youth (Jack Bona) and as a young man (Jeff Hooking). Although the script limits their contributions, Hookings

mark andrew lawrence front row centre does have an opportunity to show Scrooge’s heartbreak when Katherine Davies as Fan coldly rejects his marriage proposal. Larry Westlake serves up a sparkling performance as Mr. Fezziwig leading the cast in a lively and thoroughly enjoyable dance celebrating his annual Christmas ball. It’s a joyous moment made all the more festive by Jon Alexander’s vigorous choreography. You tend to think of A Christmas Carol as a rather dark tale, but another fun number provides a bit of levity to open the second act as the Ghost of Christmas Present (played by David Rudat) serves up some gaily wrapped gifts singing of “Abundance and Charity and Good Will toward Men.” Dickens’ tale is an epic one, involving many characters as Scrooge is given views of his past, present and future. Jacqui Burke stages the show to move simply and effectively across time using the

large ensemble to transition us from scene to scene and utilizing a unit set that offers multiple levels to spread the performers across. She does the near impossible by making Scrooge’s ultimate redemption truly moving, no matter how many times you have seen this story. This particular musical version features tuneful songs by Alan Menken with storydriving lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Thanks to musical director Alan Reid, the cast perform with assurance and attention to making the lyrics heard. When Isla Parekh as Tiny Tim shouts out “God Bless us everyone” as the end of the show, you do feel blessed at having seen such a heartwarming production. A Disney Spectacular show coming to Zion Cultural Centre in December A musical performance of a Disney mash-up will hit the stage in North York come December. A small but dedicated team of workers cracks 5,400 eggs by hand every week, and the pasta is mixed, pressed and cut using vintage machines out of Continental’s 1664 Jane St. location. “A lot of customers love coming here to see the pasta being made fresh and being able to get their pasta while it’s still warm from the machines,” Sarah said. The product line was not the only hang-up when Franco opened the business. The name itself came about because Toronto at the time was not ready for anything that wasn’t completely anglicized. “At the time, having something Italian-sounding would

FEW DETAILS ON PERMANENT HOT LANES The Ontario government is promising to provide an update on wider implementation of High Occupancy Toll or HOT lanes by the end of the year, but until then is staying mum on its plans. Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca asked for patience until the details are finalized, which he promised will be made known in a matter of weeks. The lanes are supposed to be installed on 400-series

highways. What is known is no regular lanes will be removed, and existing HOV carpool lanes will become tolling lanes for single occupancy vehicles. But there’s still no indication of locations, dates for implementation or how much the HOT lane will cost. Toronto’s share of wToronto gas tax is $170 million will get nearly $170

million from this year’s allocation of provincial gas tax revenues. The province reserves two cents from every litre of gas taxed and hands the proceeds to municipalities for transit. Holiday RIDE checks start today Toronto police will crack down on all types of impaired driving over the holiday season during the annual festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign that starts Thursday, Nov. 19. To r o n t o p o l i c e a r e launching this year’s campaign in partnership with other police services and the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) at Humber College’s north campus in Etobicoke. They are reminding drivers to be responsible, plan ahead and make smart choices about their transportation. They urge everyone to never drive impaired, to discourage others from doing so, and to call 911 if necessary if they see a suspected drunk driver on the road. “The message is clear: do not drink or use drugs and drive,” Toronto police said in a statement.

Police issued 1,012 drivers with a 90-day licence suspension. Another 444 drivers received a licence suspension of three, seven or 30 days. Toronto police say five of the 55 fatal collisions on Toronto roads this year involved drivers who were impaired.

City to clear abandoned bikes from streets Derelict bikes will soon be cluttering up Toronto sidewalks no more. The City of Toronto will be removing abandoned bicycles from city streets and sidewalks until Nov. 20 to help clear up the city’s right of way. Bikes that are missing

parts, have flat tires or are otherwise unusable will be among the first to go, while bikes that have been chained up in the same location for more than a month are also likely to be removed. Residents can call 311 to report any abandoned bikes. When calling, they should

clearly identify the bike in question and its location. Clearly derelict bikes will be removed with no warning. If it is questionable as to whether or not a bicycle has been abandoned, the city will place a notification on it. Owners will have 14 days to remove the tag and move the bicycle to another location.

P3s have grown increasingly popular among governments because they shift the burden of delivering major construction projects such as subway lines to the private sector. Recent projections put P3 investment as representing $92 billion in investment in the national economy. But critics say they end up costing the public purse more money over the long term and exclude unionized labour from bidding on lucrative construction contracts. Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee has asked city staff to look at ways to allow homeowners whose houses are on streets without sidewalks to set their nets on the city road allowance. The request came from EglintonLawrence Councillor Christin Carmichael Greb after some of her residents found they were running afoul of city bylaw officers for taking their games too near the road. Carmichael Greb said it made no sense to charge those residents. “They were off to the side – it’s never been an issue with snow removal, garbage pickup or parking,” she said. “So I want to look at the bylaw to see if there are ways to have these nets stay on the public right of way where they’re not impeding anybody, and allowing kids to be outside and play in areas where we don’t have the greenspace to go outside to the local park.”

Toronto police stepped up vigilance after Paris attacks: Mayor Tory

Drivers with on-street permit parking won’t have to be jockeying for space with car-share vehicles despite a request from the company Car2Go, Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee has decided. The committee voted down a request from the popular car-sharing company with some regrets. Car2Go President Mark Latchford told the Nov. 12 committee meeting that letting the cars park on residential streets could actually encourage car owning residents to get rid of their cars and simply use the tiny smart cars as their occasional, primary vehicle. Currently, the cars are available at Green P parking lots around the city’s downtown core. Members of the car-sharing service can pick up cars from those lots and for a small rental fee drive them to another designated parking area. Latchford said if residents have a chance of finding and dropping the cars off near their home, more will

make use of the program. “We think that with the increased availability of car sharing, we think people who are on the wait list for parking permits will change their mind, and they’ll decrease in number,” Latchford said. The trouble, according to city staff, is currently neighbourhoods where residents have no driveways and must park on streets have few free spots – and those need to be reserved for visitors to the neighbourhood parking. Staff consultation with downtown councillors indicated little uptake on the idea. The Car2Go deputation noted this hasn’t been a problem in U.S. cities where Car2Go operates including San Diego, Portland, Seattle, Denver, Austin Texas, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Columbus Ohio, Washington D.C. and New York City.
