Last year in Grade 2, Jack Carlson and his classmates at Bayview Glen School were allowed to bring in a toy from home to play with when their teacher was pleased with their behaviour.

Jack went to his teacher and asked if, in addition to bringing in something to play with, they could also donate a toy to someone else.

It didn’t take long for Jack to settle on donating the toys to the pediatric ward at North York General Hospital, where he had been treated in the past for a burned hand and two bouts of pneumonia.

The class donated several new and used toys to the hospital’s annual holiday toy drive.

On Monday, Jack was back at North York General with bags and bags of new and used toys contributed by the Grade 3 students at Bayview Glen. >>>kids, page 21

Teenage food reviewer a health booster

- there is a good chance the place will be up for review, he said.

“I ask the restaurants if they can tell me where the food comes from,” he said. “If they don’t know, I don’t feel comfortable eating there.”

He keeps a list of Never Eat Foods, which is made up of fast food, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, artificial anything and ingredients he can’t pro-

nounce.

Ryan credits sticking to his rules for being more focused and less sick, noting he hasn’t missed school due to illness for a couple years.

If he’s going to a friend’s house, Ryan usually brings his own snacks to share, noting a treat of kale chips was a big hit among his peers.

“My friends are supportive,” he said, adding they aren’t quite as dedicated to healthy eating as he is.

The goal of his blog is to help people find good food in the city, he said. One of his current favourite chefs, Doug McNish, runs Doug’s Public Kitchen at Glencairn and Marlee avenues.

“I like to say part of taste is feeling good about what you eat,” Ryan said. And if anyone knows just how good he feels, it’s his mom, Lisa Borden.

“Maybe it’s his love for organic avocados, or the incredible people that grow and make our food that inspire him with their passion, or the opportunity for him to spend time online or a combination of that and more, but whatever it is, he is happy and family meals are healthy and fun, so this mother is happy, too, and completely inspired by his super positive nature.”

Canadian Sugar Institute visited, and won’t be back at any TDSB school.

Chiara DiAngelo, manager of nutrition communications for the institute, called the incident a “misunderstanding.”

“Our purpose for participating in this one-time event was very straightforward, to speak about evidence-based information related to sugars and carbohydrates in the context of a balanced diet,” she said, adding it was the first time the organization had presented at a high school.

“We did not engage in any financial partnerships with the school and did not encourage/ promote any sales of specific foods, and did not exhibit any

logos or other Institute materials.”

Questions were welcomed from all students, she said, adding Canadian Sugar Institute representatives “did not ask anyone to stop asking questions and made no statements about Ryan’s interest or curiosity in food and nutrition.”

“We appreciate the concerns raised by individuals related to our presentation because we know parents and teachers have a vested interest in the health of their students and children,” DiAngelo said. “We value communication and transparency... we do not market or promote sugar or food products that contain sugar – that is simply not what we do.”

Ryan Storm, 14, blogs about the good food he finds in Toronto FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Reviewing and blogging about locally grown, organic food and restaurants might not be rare, but even in the crowded online world Ryan Storm stands out.

That’s because the Allen Road and Eglinton Avenue resident started his site – rysratings.ca – almost six years ago at the age of eight, when his mom started paying closer attention to the food they were eating due to her daughter’s nut allergy.

“We started eating more and more organic,” said Ryan, who is adamantly against GMOs. “At first it was difficult, but it’s gotten easier over time. You can find organic alternatives.

Now it’s part of our routine.

We do most of our shopping at farmers markets.”

The Northern Secondary School student started reviewing restaurants he frequented with his parents in Ryan Storm’s passion for healthy eating was apparent when the Canadian Sugar Institute made a recent presentation at his school.

The organization set up a table in the cafeteria for students to visit during lunch hour and ask questions.

Activities included a Jeopardy! type game focused on different sugars, where sugar comes from, myths and facts about sugar, and a nutrition labelling exercise on reading nutrition facts tables.

After asking several questions, Ryan said he was told by the supervising presenter to “stop asking so many questions, and basically asked me to leave their table”, he wrote in a blog on his website. “Four people were at that table promoting sugar, and

2008, and the reviews have grown to include products, markets and trade shows – his favourite days of year, since he gets to see what’s new in the organic world. His reviews have also grown from one paragraph to whole pages and pictures, including presentations he’s made, such as at Rise: The Better Living Expo at Evergreen Brick Works in June.

And Ryan, who just turned 14, only reviews things he likes, as he doesn’t feel right penning negative write-ups.

“I’m afraid of hurting people’s feelings,” he said.

School visit sparks concern

“It was a poor choice,” he said of inviting the Canadian Sugar Institute, adding approval for the presentation didn’t go through a vetting process. “If we want to talk about healthy eating, you don’t bring in the sugar people.

Lots of people can talk about sugar – dieticians from a hospital, or from the diabetes association – but not the sugar people.”

This is the first year cafeteria staff has brought in speakers, Felsen said, adding he encourages students to be inquisitive.

North York men ID’d as victims in Algonquin plane crash Police have identified the two men killed in an airplane crash in Algonquin Park Nov. 11 as North York residents Logesh Lakshmikanthan, 25, and Ravindran Arulanandar, 31.

Autopsies confirmed both died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Ontario Provincial Police and the Transportation Safety Board have determined the plane crashed was “a result of running out of fuel.”

At 8:30 p.m. last week on Tuesday, the aircraft contacted the Toronto Area Control Centre advising of an airborne emergency. Shortly after, communication was lost.

The wreckage was located in a dense treed area at about 4:40 a.m. last Wednesday.

Teen reports sex assault Police are looking for a suspect after a young teen was sexually assaulted near Jane Street and Troutbrooke Drive Tuesday.

Police said 13-year-old girl was walking through a park when a man pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted her just after 3 p.m.

The suspect is black, 30 to 40 years old, 5’ 6” tall, 140 pounds, with a heavy build, a round unshaven face, brown eyes, and flat nose. He was wearing a dark blue knitted beanie toque, a dark blue puffy jacket with a hood, and black pants.

Policies in need of consistency I

t’s been 16 years since six municipalities were formed into the City of Toronto.

And yet, more than a decade and a half after amalgamation, Toronto is still dealing with numerous policy discrepancies, bylaw inconsistencies and service disparities in its various neighbourhoods.

Rules governing anything from snow removal to mechanical leaf collection to rooming house bylaws can be markedly different depending on what area of the city you live in.

It’s completely understandable why York SouthWeston Councillor Frances Nunziata wants to approach the budget committee to explore extending mechanical leaf collection to all parts of the city – including her ward. Currently, the service is only available in certain pockets of Etobicoke, Scarborough and a small part of York. How is it fair that residences mere blocks away in the same city can our view receive disproportionate levels service?

Time to tidy up of It’s reasonable to expect there to be a transition period from discrepancies, such a complicated process as disparities the megacity amalgamation was. But now, in 2014, we’re into the sixth term of Toronto council in its current format. It’s past time to tidy this up.

In the coming term, Toronto’s new council must make a sincere effort to build more consistent policy throughout the city – one that reflects a more unified entity that is Toronto. Councillors must understand there will be differences between putting forth their priorities from their constituents and looking at those priorities through a city-wide lens.

Governing a city with the size, complexity and diversity of Toronto is a challenging task. But a city that has more consistency in its policies can take pride in a more equitable distribution of services and still respect the unique characteristics of its 140 neighbourhoods. Providing equal access to the benefits that come with being a resident of this city does nothing to change those valuable characteristics.

The effects of amalgamation were felt strongly when it happened in 1998. The effects of amalgamation are still a hurdle today in this city. They will continue to be a hurdle as long as we fail to view Toronto as one unified entity.

A more unified Toronto is a stronger Toronto.

The sooner the city unshackles itself from a hodgepodge of policies the sooner it will be prepared to deal with present challenges.

To really savour winter, just add ice I’ve got a bold, red circle around Saturday, Nov. 22 on my desk calendar. I want to make sure others are aware of the special day, too, so I’m carrying it around with me this week to show to everybody I meet.

That’s the calendar I’m referring to, only. For those I bump into who have their hearts set on seeing my desk as well, sorry. I tried it once. Attempting to squeeze through those turnstiles with a little backpack or carry-on bag is tough enough. With furniture? Fuggedaboutit.

But I digress, back to the premise.

The day in question is the beginning of the outdoor skating/shinny season in my neighbourhood at Cedarvale Air, aka Cedarvale, aka Rink B, aka That Outdoor Rink At The Bottom of Cedarvale

It’s also the opening of eight other municipal rinks in the city. Alas, there isn’t room enough in this space for their names, let alone their aka’s.

The popular Natrel Rink at Harbourfront Centre on Queens Quay West is already in use and the remaining rinks in the city will be good to go by the end of the month.

The early start is music to these ears.

I had to pinch myself last year when I found that the rinks would open by the end of the first week of December. That was a vast improvement over previous years. The bump up of another two weeks this

year? Fuggedaboutit.

(As another aside, using “fuggedaboutit” this many times in one column, and in one about outdoor rinks of all things?

Fuggedaboutit.)

Having the rinks up and running this soon reminds me of when I was a kid.

We had outdoor ice at all the elementary and high schools by the third week of November. The fact that the ice surface was of the natural variety back then and the ice on the outdoor rinks we’ll be on Saturday will be fortified by compressors underneath won’t lessen my appreciation of the experience. I’ll take a skate down memory lane anyway I can get it.

But what I really like about this extension of the outdoor ice season by the municipal powers-that-be is their understanding of the important role that winter activities play within the fabric the city, activities that have sadly been declining due to climate

change.

They couldn’t flip a switch and change global warming to global cooling to make things the way the were, so they did the only thing they could do under the circumstances: they flipped a switch that turns on a compressor that allows us to turn back the clock for a little while at least. Pretty cool thinking if you ask me.

So, before I step out on the ice Saturday I’m going to make a point of tipping my hat to those who made this happen. Well, maybe not. Given that the forecast says it’ll be a little chilly that day, it’ll most likely be my tuque.

Unless, I’m playing shinny, of course.

In which case, it won’t be either. I’ll definitely be tipping my helmet.

Concert in memory of Olivia Wise will support children’s grief program LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com As North York teenager Olivia Wise became more ill with a brain tumour, a counselor came to her home to listen as she shared her thoughts and fears about facing a terminal illness.

And as death became inevitable and Olivia could no longer walk or talk, the counselor was there to listen as her grief-stricken family shared their thoughts and fears about losing their beloved daughter and sister, “I felt better as a mother knowing my kids had somebody to talk to, somebody who is used to dealing with grief and death, with illness and loss, even though we didn’t want to believe it was happening,” Olivia’s mother, Kari Winemaker, said in the living room of the family home in the area of Sheppard Avenue and Wilson Heights Boulevard.

“It was just having somebody there that you could say anything to. And she was just such an amazing woman, so easy to talk to, she fit with our family.”

On Nov. 30, just five days after the first anniversary of Olivia’s death, the LivWise Foundation created in Olivia’s honour will host the Liv, Love and Lyrics concert with proceeds going to the Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Program, which provided the counselor for Olivia and her family.

Featuring singer-songwriter Andy Grammer, the

event will also include performances by three teenage contest winners and an after-party for some ticket holders.

The concert will be held at North York’s Toronto Centre for the Arts, a venue where Olivia had performed with her school, Crestwood, at several concerts over the years, even performing a couple of solos.

“That’s kind of special, too, that she actually performed on that stage,” Winemaker said.

“I literally think of her every second of every day. I can’t get her out of my mind but this (concert) is at least keeping it positive. It’s like ‘Oh Liv, you’re still here, I’m still doing stuff for you, you’re still in my life.’ I just have to remember that. She’s still part of the world and in her short life, she’s given so much more than (some) people in a lifetime have done.”

Olivia became an international sensation when a video of her singing Katy Perry’s song Roar was posted on YouTube about six weeks before she died.

That prompted Perry to respond with a video message telling Olivia that her performance moved her and many others and encouraging to “keep roaring.”

The first indication of Olivia’s illness came when the family was away on vacation in January 2012 and Olivia suffered a seizure in her sleep.

treated for mild cerebral palsy at SickKids Hospital, her parents called her doctors and were advised to keep an eye on her and bring her in for an appointment when they returned home.

The night before the appointment, on Olivia’s little brother Jason’s birthday, a friend over for a sleepover ran into Olivia’s parents’ bedroom to tell them the 15-year-old was having another seizure.

Tests revealed Olivia had an inoperable brain tumour.

Despite medical treatments and dogged determination – strong-willed Olivia even insisted on attending summer school and then taking classes at home when she became sicker so she wouldn’t lose her school year – the 16-year-

old who loved singing and dreamed of becoming a pediatrician lost her battle on Nov. 25, 2013.

Olivia was “the warmest, funniest, easiest-going, sociable, kind, just beautiful girl inside and out. She truly could talk to anybody. She just made everyone feel good and she wasn’t afraid to be herself at all,” Winemaker said.

“She had a lot of confidence, but not. It was like she just wasn’t afraid to be who she was and wanted to be and say what she wanted to say.

She was like an old soul.”

The LivWise Foundation was established in her honour to help charities achieve their goals.

“The foundation grew from

a sense of community. Out of a love for others has this really developed,” Winemaker said.

“Because Olivia wanted to help other kids and sick kids, we thought, what better way to keep what she wanted going...We want to help others because it’s such a horrible, horrible thing to go through.

If we can help other people, it does help us somehow.”

Olivia, who had a shyness about her but also loved to perform, would be thrilled with the Liv, Love and Lyrics concert, her mom said.

“First of all, she would be opening and closing (the concert by performing). She’s definitely got the biggest smile on her face. She will be there that night,” she said.

Polite Revolution against Fordian tyranny of Bad Behaviour a year old A year ago this week (and this day, as I write this on Tuesday) Toronto Council did a very bold, and also quite fearful thing. In a meeting specially called for the purpose, council voted to dethrone the mayor of the day, and select a new leader from among their own.

It is the closest a government in this city has come to open revolt, and one might hope, the closest it will ever come to happening again.

Looking back over the past year, it’s fair to say Toronto’s experiment with revolution has been at least a measured success.

Part of that may be that the roots of this particular revolution dovetailed so well with our national identity.

Not so much a Quiet Revolution, it was a Polite Revolution against a Fordian tyranny of Bad Behaviour.

Norm Kelly was a true Father of the Revolution as he embraced his enhanced role as deputy (and de-facto) mayor. He visited his shellshocked council colleagues one by one, said his pleaseand-thank-yous, even as the Mayor-in-Exile’s spiralling drama continued in the public corridors outside their offices.

For the most part, council managed to politely ignore the Ford brothers, in a quintessentially Canadian way: passing an inoffensive budget,

delaying an uncomfortable conversation about jets at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, averting eyes at the prospect of hurrying ahead on city-wide contracting out of garbage collection.

Things got boisterous on the campaign trail, and Torontonians were only willing to have so much of it.

While some may have hankered for the old hoot-andholler approach to municipal governance, most turned away from Doug Ford and cast their votes with the one candidate on the planet who could give even Kelly a few lessons in table manners, the forcefully pleasant John Tory.

As it turns out, Torontonians are not only fond of the traditional Canadian values of peace, order and good government: after a year of exposure to it, we’re also fond of just a little peace and quiet.

transit at Union out of order wElevator The TTC has closed an elevator at Union Station earlier than anticipated following a construction mistake.

The University line lift was expected to close early next month to allow for the construction of a new elevator and escalator, part of a station-wide renovation scheduled for completion before the 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games.

But that changed when construction crews cut through the elevator’s hydraulic cables rendering it inoperable.

A temporary elevator will be in place by early December, and until then riders traveling south can go an additional stop to St. Andrew station – before switching trains and backtracking north to Union to use the Yonge line elevator.

There’s more access than ever to public Wi-Fi throughout the TTC subway network. But the service has

BAI Canada is responsible for the installation of adsupported Wi-Fi that can be accessed for free on various station platforms, including Bloor, St. George and College.

King was supposed to have received the service by last week, but that’s been delayed. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said that’s because more testing is required.

BAI Canada has promised to have all TTC subway stations Wi-Fi enabled by 2017.

EGLINTON LIGHT RAIL NEARS end wTUNNELLING

The city’s first light rail line celebrated a construction milestone of sorts last week.

GO Transit is looking for two volunteers to sit on its Customer Service Advisory Committee (CSAC).

Jane-Finch has had “decades of difficult, painful interactions” with police, and people interviewed said they’re still looking for better service, he said.

Board members questioned how a report they commissioned found its way to the media before it was released.

Price said the preliminary findings were presented in an open forum.

“This is community-based research. This is not research in a bunker,” he said.

The board will examine the report in detail at a special noon-hour meeting Nov. 26, at which Blair will be asked to provide his response.

But the chief said he couldn’t wait until then.

Officers are trained to fully understand the policy, and though not all contacts with police end well, Price’s conclusions aren’t accurate, he told reporters outside the meeting.

“We want these young people to trust us. We also have to keep that commu-

nity safe,” Blair said, adding the report makes it seem as though many minors in 31 Division are being carded, but in June through August, 83 community safety notes (officers’ reports on cardings) were written, and only four were for persons under 18.

The chief appeared upset about remarks Alok Mukherjee, the board’s chair, had made to the press before the report was released.

Mukherjee, who said he’d explain his comments on Nov. 26, told one newspaper the report findings were “extremely disturbing” and that police faced a “crisis of confidence” in Toronto.

“I think some of the chair’s remarks were inflammatory and reckless,” Blair said.

Others who had spoken before on how the police handle carding were also quick to draw conclusions on the findings.

“This report is a serious blow to the Toronto Police Service,” John Sewell, a former Toronto mayor, told the board.

“This is not a police force that is respecting people.”

Sewell said police should simply be prohibited from stopping people unless they are suspected of being involved in criminal activity.

It’s possible some people interviewed for the survey are fabricating or exaggerating actions by police, but “it’s the perception that counts here,” said Howard Morton, a lawyer representing the Law Union.

Morton argued the perception of misuse of power which the survey found shows why police have lost the confidence of people in some parts of the city.

During the recent election campaign, Toronto Mayorelect John Tory said he was against racial profiling by police but, unlike his rival Olivia Chow, did not say he would eliminate the practice of carding.

Honest Ed’s partners with Bad Boy Grand opening of new superstore set for Thursday, November 20th

Two true Toronto originals are set to pair up in an Annex location already well-known to the city’s bargain hunters.

Lastman’s Bad Boy Superstore is set to move into a portion of Honest Ed’s left vacant with the departure of music store Sonic Boom Records.

According to Bad Boy CEO Blayne Lastman, the partnership between his company and the Mirvish family-owned Honest Ed’s was a natural fit. “(Honest Ed’s) approached me because the Mirvishes thought it was a great idea,” Lastman said.“I loved the idea as soon as I heard it. We met to discuss it the next day and had (an agreement) the day after.”

The 14,000 square foot location will feature furniture, appliances, electronics and mattresses. The new location

will cater to the residents living around the franchise’s latest location.

“We’ll have some urban Bad Boy in there – some condo and apartment-sized furniture,” he said.“It’s our first time in the downtown core.”

He noted, however, that the store would also feature goods designed to appeal to homeowners, pointing out that while many downtown residents are keen on spacesaving furniture, others want larger pieces to fill homes.

“It’s a great area, the Annex,” he said. “The average household income is over $100,000 and the average house is worth more than $1 million.”

The chain was founded by Mel Lastman, who built it up before entering into municipal politics. Blayne Lastman took

over the reins in the 1990s and has expanded the franchise across the GTA and beyond.

The Honest Ed’s site will be Bay Boy’s 11th location, though its stay at Bathurst and Bloor comes with a time limit. The Honest Ed’s store was sold last year to developer Westbank Properties and it is expected to shut its door for good perhaps as soon as the end of 2016.

“We believe it may take a little while longer for (Westbank) to start work on whatever they’re going to build there, so hopefully we can be there a little longer,” Lastman said.

The store will host a grand opening sale at its new location, 782 Bathurst Street, starting at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, with more than $50,000 in giveaways.

Recovered break-in valuables now online Break-in ring targeted several wealthy city neighbourhoods

Police have unveiled a web page in an effort to return thousands of valuables that were stolen during a string of residential break-ins in affluent areas of North York, midtown and south Etobicoke.

“We just can’t put it out on display, there’s just too much.

There are over 4,000 items,” Det. David Zajac said Tuesday.

“We felt the best way to do it is to catalogue, to photograph everything properly and then put it out onto a website.”

More than 50 break-ins have been linked to the investigation, dubbed Project Yellowbird.

The probe began Dec. 22 when police from North York’s 32 Division responded to a

residential break-and-enter in which a yellow Porsche Carrera and an Audi S4 were stolen.

“They were driven (away) during the ice storm,” said Zajac, of 32 Division. “We started looking into this group and then finding out that 53 and 22 divisions had the same break-and-enters and highend auto theft.”

The stolen Porsche was recovered in Lithuania. Police have recovered 22 other vehicles and returned them to their owners.

On Aug. 28, police executed a series of search warrants and recovered property believed to be worth more than $5 million.

Six men and three women were charged. Five suspects remain in custody while the others are now out on bail.

The break-ins took place in the Hoggs Hollow neighbourhood, the Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue area, Rosedale and The Kingsway.

“We have a 150-year-old Bible, we have watches with engravings on them,” Zajac said. “It’s just a matter of finding the rightful owner.”

Zajac is asking anyone who has been a victim of a breakand-enter in the past two years

Det. Sgt. Sean Brosnan, who heads 32 Division’s criminal investigations bureau, called the investigation “very labour intensive.”

“And it just keeps growing.

We keep finding new things as we investigate deeper,” he said.

“I’m sure there will be other break-ins that we’ll discover, and there may be ones that we just haven’t been able to cross-match.”

Police said suspects would break into homes by forcing the front or back doors or by throwing bricks through windows.

Jewelry, electronics, luxury accessories and vehicle key fobs were stolen.

“There was a lot of moving parts with this project, especially when cars are being put on containers and shipped overseas,” Brosnan said.

Police make arrest following sex assault investigation A man faces charges following an investigation into sex assaults on the Flemingdon Park TTC bus.

Police allege a 31-year-old woman boarded the Route 100C bus at the Broadview subway station at about 5:30 p.m. Oct. 21. During the bus ride, a man stood behind her and sexually assaulted her. When she moved to another spot on the bus,

he allegedly stood behind another woman and sexually assaulted her.

At about 6 p.m. Nov. 13, the first victim saw a suspect sexually assault a woman on the same bus route.

On Monday, officers from 54 Division and the transit patrol unit arrested Ahmad Ayoubi, 35, of Toronto. He is charged with two counts of sexual assault.

Robbers caught on tape Police have released security camera footage of two men dressed in burkas robbing a Leslie Street and York Mills Road jewelry store Oct. 14.

Police said the two men entered Mona Clara Jewellers, 808 York Mills Rd., at 11 a.m.

One man was armed with a handgun and forced one of two employees in the store to open the jewelry display case.

The men made off with $50,000 worth of jewelry,

police said.

The first suspect is described as black and 5’ 11” tall. He was wearing a black burka with shiny details on both arms, black gloves, and boots.

The second suspect is described as 6’ 3” tall. He was wearing a black burka and black boots.

Kids deliver happiness to hospital >>>from page 1 “I wanted to help the kids that’s been in the hospital for a long time by giving them toys that we don’t use any more,” Jack said in explaining how he came up with the idea of donating to children in the hospital.

“They (the patients) will probably be very happy.”

Because Jack felt nervous last year meeting hospital officials who thanked him for the donation, he brought his friend Riyan Kassam along this year, Riyan said he was happy to be helping kids in hospital.

“It’s Christmastime and usually everybody gets

toys but people in the hospital don’t because they’re sick and can’t get out to celebrate,” he said.

Hospital president, Dr. Tim Rutledge, told Jack that the large donation of toys is amazing.

“I can’t tell you how impressed we are that you did this wonderful thing.

We have children here who are sick and when you do such a wonderful thing, you help make that tough time easier for them and bring a lot of happiness to them,” he said.

“I hope you have a sense of how happy this is going to make children.”

Jack’s donation kicked off the hospital’s annual holiday toy drive.

“It’s great when we see

kids themselves donating back to other kids,” he said.

Toys help distract children from the pain they are experiencing and provide comfort while they are in hospital away from home, Kanani said.

“It’s great that we have all these toys for the kids on the ward. Not only through the holiday season but we use a lot of these toys for year-round so the kids that are hospitalized can have different activities and toys to play with,” he said.

“So, the toys drive is an opportunity every year to get a lot of these donations that help us all yearround.”

Security camera image released of assault suspect Police have released security camera images of a suspect who allegedly threatened and spat on a man at Finch subway station Oct. 19.

Police said a 22-yearold man was exiting the station, near Yonge Street and Finch Avenue, when a man approached around 6 p.m. The 22-year-old was then threatened and spat on. The suspect left the area.

Last Thursday, the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) announced that the final financial statement for the 2013-2014 fiscal year ending August 31, 2014 will show an in-year deficit of $8.9 million – a significant change from the $292,000 in-year surplus approved by the board of trustees in June 2013.

The situation, according to a board media release, is not related to any action or decision made by board trustees in their role as governors, but is due to a combination of “inaccurate calculations made through human error during budget preparations by board staff, and gaps in financial reporting.”

TCDSB staff is now working with ministry officials to formulate a deficit recovery action plan to return the board to a positive fiscal position “as quickly as possible”, and has accepted the government’s offer to provide the assistance of a financial consultant.
