Dorozio, who has been growing pumpkins since

2010, said four giant ones – including a 150 pounder – emerged from the ground this year.

“We were kicking around the idea, if the pumpkins grew big enough, people could come by with their cellphones and take pictures,” he said.

The idea quickly grew into

the Pumpkin Picture Parade event complete with hay bales, face painting, food tables, picture tables, and a pumpkin lift-off for those wishing to test their strength, Dorozio said.

Jessica Gorlicky will be going back in time to her favourite era when her first exhibit in two years opens today at her North York studio.

The live performance and abstract painter will have more than 80 new pieces of work on display for her exhibit, titled Saturday Morning, a throwback to her early 1980s childhood when sugary cereals were a staple and The Smurfs and The Jetsons ruled the tube weekend mornings.

“That’s my era,” said the 33-year-old North York resident. “It’s a nostalgic moment.

I really appreciate that time. I have amazing memories, and even now, I’m like, where’s my cereal?”

The exhibit at Gorlicky’s 9,000-square-foot studio will feature popular Saturday morning ’80s characters mixed with pop culture ’80s references, she said.

Executive director Candace Thomson said the centre will put in a proposal to host one of the pilot projects.

“This particular grant is exciting in the fact it is a community grant for isolated seniors, which is one of the hardest people to service because we can’t find them, they’re isolated. It is a hard population to find and locate within the resources we presently have. This type of program will definitely help us move that forward,” she said.

“We say we’re the best kept secret in North York because people don’t know that we’re here. People right down the road from us will come in for the first time and be able to say, ‘I didn’t know you were here and I didn’t know what kind of services you have.’”

There may be many reasons why seniors are isolated including language barriers and mobility issues, but it is important to help seniors stay connected, Thomson said.

“Active living is one of the philosophies we have here at the centre. Being active and being able to be socialized and being able to come into the centre and be able to interact with other people helps to keep you young, keeps you motivated, helps to keep you mentally stimulated and be able to continue a (good) quality of life,” she said.

When Toronto council meets next month, it is scheduled to consider implementing tough new measures on outdoor smoking in the city. These are recommendations proposed by the city’s board of health in an attempt to curb exposure to second-hand smoke.

Of the series of recommendations the board made this week, one of them includes asking council to make it illegal to smoke within nine metres of the entrances to all public buildings in the city. The board of health’s recommendation that sports fields and “specific park amenities” go smoke-free as well needs parks and environment committee approval on Oct. 23 before it can go to council.

Other health board recommendations, including the banning of smoking on restaurant patios, would require a change to provincial legislation.

While the board endorsed the our view recommendations, Mayor Rob Ford has called the plan “nanny Non-smoking state” legislation.

When it comes to new legislalegislation must tion of any sort, we ask: Is the be enforcable legislation practical? And is it for the greater good?

On the first question, when it comes to banning smoking within nine metres of a public building, we do question the practicality of enforcing such a law and would like to see specific details of how the city plans to deal with that.

On the second question, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t for the greater good.

In a report to the board of health last September titled ‘The Burden of Illness from Tobacco in Toronto’, Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown noted tobacco use and second-hand smoke remain the leading causes of preventable death in Canada. In Toronto, adult smoking rates have “seen a slowed decline since 2001,” the report said, suggesting expanded tobacco control is needed to further reduce the risks posed from second-hand smoke.

The proposals announced this week stem from McKeown’s report from last September. Council must ensure they enforceable and measurable.

“The history of trying to reduce the harm caused by smoking in Toronto is one of incremental measures,” McKeown said this week, acknowledging a total ban on smoking is “not a practical objective in the short term.”

It’s Toronto council’s job to ensure this next step in the interest of public health is the right one.

David: “The Leafs, who else? They can’t afford to be breaking bad. If they don’t get out of the gate fast, they may never catch up. And this year a good start is more important than ever. Detroit is now in the same division and the Red Wings have been in the post-season 21 years in a row. That effectively means one less playoff spot likely up for grabs.”

Transit system needn’t be complicated To the editor: I recently got back from a trip to Washington and was impressed with their Metro Transit system.

A senior Smart card, available from machines for $5 that can be loaded for any amount you choose was a welcome change from the rather antiquated senior ticket available on the TTC. The machines on the stations were accessible to seniors. No waiting in line to be let into the station. No having to find a gate that is manned so you can use a ticket. You just tapped your card and it let you enter when you started your trip and then, depending on which zone you exited, you tapped it again and were charged accordingly.

Tell us about your organization and what it does.

Downsview Services for Seniors (DSS) works to extend the quality years of older adults through a seamless network of day programs and services.

We are a source of social activities, transportation, meal delivery and home support. It is our number one goal to foster the independent living of our aging population.

to engage seniors through different cultural dance techniques, while promoting socialization in a welcoming environment. We also provide snacks after each program and celebrate a different culture each month through the sharing of a meal.

DSS also actively participates on the Hub Advisory Panel, which is comprised of representatives from each member agency that helps guide the operations at the Hub, with the help of feedback from our collective stakeholders.

What has the feedback been like from the local community since you opened the doors there?

Feedback has been excellent. We have seen an average of 25 to 30 participants each week being active and enjoying themselves.

There was a lot of communication to the Hub from older adults

in the community about the need for senior-specific programming prior to the implementation of our program, so it is great to hear we are meeting this need.

What’s the difference between the location of the Hub and other locations?

Our service delivery at the Hub is very program-specific. We do not conduct any day-to-day operations out of the Hub, rather we facilitate programs for older adults at specific times and utilize space as needed.

How does your organization fit in with the Bathurst-Finch Community Hub? DSS officially joined the BathurstFinch Hub as a supporting partner in 2012. Our long-standing collaborative relationship with Unison Health and Community Services, as well as many of the other anchoring/supporting partner agencies, made it a natural fit.

Our goal at the Hub is to provide meaningful and engaging programs to older adults. We currently facilitate a cultural dance program for older adults (age 55 and older) once a week at the Hub. This program aims

complemented by four satellite locations throughout the community.

We also provide programs in Toronto Community Housing buildings and partner with other service providers to extend our reach and ensure we are meeting the needs of as many older adults as possible.

Talk about the goal laid out in your mission statement with specific reference to the Bathurst and Finch community.

Mission statement: DSS aspires to enhance, engage and empower members of our diverse community by providing equitable, accessible and high quality services.

Our mission/values/goals are the same for any community within our catchment area, however we do recognize the uniqueness and differing challenges of each community.

The Bathurst-Finch Hub has been a great platform for us to extend our health and wellness programs

to the Bathurst-Finch community, strengthen our partnerships with the Hub member agencies and in a way introduce ourselves and our mission to members of the Bathurst-Finch community who are not already familiar with DSS.

The Ford focus: on the gravy Mayor Rob Ford was unusually boisterous Monday when he faced reporters alongside a crowd of music industry executives to talk about his trip to Austin, Texas.

I suspect it wasn’t just the prospect of visiting the Lone Star State that had him going. The real boost likely came from the matter of the Pan Am Games over-expenditures, and the afterglow of the scandal of the $2,500-abum councillors’ chairs.

The chairs were ordered by an unnamed staff person; actually replicas of the chairs they were replacing: chairs that had been propping up councillors, mayors and their guests since the early 1960s when Toronto City Hall was built.

Last week, Ford apologized for the purchase – coming in at some $75,000 in total – and strongly implied the person responsible for the purchase had been sacked.

On Monday, Ford suggested the same thing should happen to Pan Am Games CEO Ian Troop, if

david nickle the city he can’t adequately explain a heap of questionable expenses filed by himself and his staff as they set about cobbling together the 2015 games.

This is high-fibre feed for Ford, and the movement to re-elect him in 2014.

Ford campaigned in 2010 with the simple promise to “stop the gravy train”.

To illustrate his point, he held up outgoing Toronto Centre-Rosedale councillor Kyle Rae’s decision to spend $12,000 from his office budget on a farewell party for himself. In the total context of Toronto’s nearing $10-billion budget, $12,000 didn’t amount to much of a hit. But it surely made a difference to Ford’s fortunes in the polls, turning Toronto Council’s perennial outsider into its preeminent insider.

That’s a transformation

that’s hard to repeat, but it’s the trajectory a Ford re-election campaign will almost certainly follow.

Indeed, the mayor is already set up to do so. Council has long ago taken control of the municipal agenda away from Ford. Going into the next election, Ford is firmly on the outside.

But just as Rae’s taxpayerfunded party was the key in 2010, so might these new examples of the ugly confluence of privilege and profligacy unlock the door to a second Rob Ford mayoralty.

And the fact that neither of these are necessarily the best examples won’t deter him. But that doesn’t matter in retail politics. Rae’s use of his office budget to throw a farewell bash was all done according to the rules, too.

It riled voters enough to elect Rob Ford mayor of Toronto.

And if it worked before, well, why not again?

We do still have 16 per cent of people in Toronto who do smoke so we have to recognize that.”

When the best solution isn’t the lowest price

S

ometimes it’s how our city responds to smaller issues that say so much about the strengths and limitations of city hall.

Take for example the now infamous purchase of 30 chairs for the Toronto City Hall Council Lounge at $2,495 apiece.

According to internal city documents, procedures were followed. Over the last 50 years these chairs have already been reupholstered twice. But because the chairs needed recovering again, the frames have started to crack and safety standards have changed, Out staff went to the market. Only one company could comply with both city rules and specifications for complete refurbishment. The bid was $7,500 per chair. Next, city staff asked for quotes for new chairs made by the original manufacturer. That came in at $5,200 each. Finally, they requested offers on replica chairs. One bid was received, at $2,495 per chair.

Given that this quote was

david soknacki beyond the headlines within the overall budget, and compliant with city rules, the order was issued.

By the late summer the new chairs arrived, and the old ones put in storage.

Yet within a month outrage filled talk shows.

The mayor apologized, councillors and staff promised to tighten the approval process, and even former mayor Mel Lastman expressed dismay.

There is nothing wrong with the approval process itself. In this case, purchasing staff drove the price down to one-third of the opening cost, got the total under budget and followed procurement rules.

So it was a good decision?

No. Paying a premium to preserve artistic integrity is one matter; paying that premium for something from which very few members of the public will ever benefit is another.

It seems that no one considered this purchase was anything more than an exercise in filling specifications.

To be fair, the same inability to see beyond functional responsibilities exists in the private sector.

Yet under the microscope of public scrutiny that is city hall, management should have been aware of the negative reaction to spending almost $2,500 per chair for what is essentially a private lounge.

Admittedly, acquiring a custom product with higher cost takes work, creativity and courage. But it can be done. For example, a sponsorship program for chairs in the councillors’ lounge would probably be oversubscribed. Alternatively, the old chairs could be auctioned with the proceeds at least partially paying for the new. There are many ideas that would preserve our artistic integrity without causing outrage.

plants, including lettuce and carrots.

“I’d like to make this an annual event,” he said of the Pumpkin Picture Parade.

“We made it for the kids, by the kids.”

Donations will be accepted at the event to help off-set costs involved in bringing Dorozio’s pumpkin workshops to schools, as well as for the price of fertilizer.

Sunday protest concert A slew of performers, including Gord Downie, Sarah Harmer, and the Sadies will take to the stage at Mel Lastman Square this Sunday for a free concert at 2 p.m. to protest Enbridge’s controversial Line 9 pipeline.

Harmer and the Environmental Defence organization are behind the concert, dubbed Rock

the Line, and are speaking out against plans to pump tar sands oil through Southern Ontario, increasing Enbridge’s Line 9 capacity and reversing the flow of the pipeline to ship crude oil and diluted bitumen from Alberta eastwards.

The line in Toronto will go across the Rouge River and along the Finch corridor.

RETURN OF LINK shuttle service wTHE Construction of the UnionPearson (UP) Express air rail link is well underway and now comes news the airport train shuttle service LINK is set to return following a six-month hiatus.

LINK, which offers a frequent rail connection between terminals at Pearson International Airport, was replaced by a bus route last March. It will resume this month.

Metrolinx is completing work on the UP Express, which is billed as the city’s first rapid transit connection from the airport to the downtown core.

The four-stop express service is scheduled to open in time for the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games and will include stations at Pearson and Union.

“I heard one in three kids go to school without breakfast every day,” she said. “When I’m putting myself out there, I want to give back as well.

Cereal, breakfast, morning, kids, kids are hungry.”

A professional painter since 2000, Gorlicky has sold more than 1,000 original works,

from murals to canvass to chandeliers.

Thanks to word-of-mouth advertising, her work can be found in restaurants, boutiques, museums and showrooms across the Greater Toronto Area, and in private collections around the world, and she has produced more than 80 YouTube videos of her live performance work.

Gorlicky collaborated with the 2010 Torch Winter Olympics for her live paint-

ing work, and partnered with Cirque du Soleil in 2011 for 77 shows in Toronto and Montreal for its Totem production, having to complete works of art in under 15 minutes.

Other collaborations include Holt Renfrew, CocaCola and TOMS Shoes, she said.
