or almost three-anda-half decades, Rick Rayman has laced up his shoes and hit the pavement running – and has yet to miss a day.

His running streak began Dec. 10, 1978. Through injury, illness and less than ideal weather, the 67-yearold York Mills Road and Bayview Avenue resident has run every single day since.

Active all his life, Rayman was looking for a way to maintain his fitness once his kids were born. He started running two to three miles a day, eventually increasing to five. In June 1978, he entered his first 20-kilometre race near the Toronto Zoo. Two months later, he entered his first marathon, and kept on going.

Students go ‘beyond 3:30’ with bakery visit CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com

F

uture bakers learned how to make bread last Thursday at a special workshop as part of Feed Tomorrow Week, which aims to raise awareness and collect pledges to help feed the city’s hungry students.

“There’s a need for food in our schools,” said Shannon Quesnelle, development manager for Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS). “A lot of kids are going hungry every day. It affects their grades and physical health.”

TFSS, an independent charity that raises funds and provides programs for children at the Toronto District School Board, held various events across the city this past week.

One of the featured events involved a dozen students from Rockcliffe Middle School and Maple Leaf Public School who visited Ace Bakery’s main facility near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue where Master Baker Marcus Mariathas hosted the bread-

making workshop for the “junior chefs”.

Each of the students are part of the beyond 3:30 program, an after school initiative supported by TFSS, which the funds raised helps to support and keep the program going throughout the school year.

Beyond 3:30 offers free programming for students between the ages of 11 and

14, and provides a safe place for physical fitness, a nutritious meal, and homework support.

Ace Bakery has been involved for the past three years holding employee fundraisers to support TFSS. Some of the employees have also visited the schools to see the programs in action, said Fiona Mitchell, VP HR at Ace Bakery.

“This year it’s great to have the kids here,” Mitchell added. “And playing with dough is fun.”

Maple Leaf students Jerome December, Lucas Le and Catherine Tran said they all had a great time learning how to make bread and getting the tour of the facility.

“It was pretty cool,” Lucas said after the tour.

“Now my stomach is growling.”

Jerome added that he liked being part of beyond 3:30.

“It’s fun and it helps you learn so you can get caught up in school,” he said.

Tuberculosis case confirmed at North York’s Chaminade LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com A case of tuberculosis has been identified at North York’s Chaminade College School, according to a letter sent home to parents yesterday.

“Toronto Public Health (TPH) has informed us that someone at the school has been diagnosed with tuber-

culosis (TB). The individual is at home on treatment and is doing well,” said the letter from principal Carmine Settino to parents of students who attend the all-boys’ Catholic high school at 490 Queen’s Dr. in the area of Jane Street and Black Creek Drive.

“TPH has reassured us that the general school population is at low risk of exposure and

that only those with close, prolonged contact require any follow up. Anyone who has had casual contact is not at risk and does not require testing. Friends and siblings of the individual are safe to attend the school.”

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that can be spread if someone with active TB in the lungs coughs or sneezes germs

into the air, the letter said.

Symptoms include a cough that lasts more than three weeks, weight loss, fever/chills, night sweats and fatigue.

Tuberculosis is treatable with medication, the letter said.

A spokesperson for public health could not be reached yesterday afternoon.

According to Settino’s

letter, about 300 cases of TB are reported to public health every year, of which 10 to 15 occur in schools.

“The health and safety of everyone at Chaminade is always our top priority. I have been in contact with TCDSB (Toronto Catholic District School Board) health and safety and they have arranged for additional cleaning and

disinfection of common surfaces throughout the school,” the letter said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected member of our community and his family.”

Make a difference for the homeless

W

ith colder weather approaching, the needs of the homeless in our city will come into sharper focus and there’s a new initiative underway that allows local residents, business, religious groups and social service agencies to coordinate the ways they can help.

Homeless Connect Toronto is a branch of the North America-wide Project Homeless Connect which aims to improve the access the homeless have to the services and programs they need.

The 2013 Street Needs Assessment interim report, which was released by the City of Toronto this summer, estimated the number of homeless at 5,219.

While those numbers represent an increase of only about one per cent from the last survey in 2009, all Torontonians should be concerned that so many of our fellow citizens have no place to call home.

It’s important to note more than 76.1 per cent of those surveyed by the city on the night of April 17 were our view recorded as taking refuge in cityadministered homeless shelters.

Homeless Approximately 8.6 per cent were sleeping outdoors, according to Connect has the report. great potential Perhaps the bright spot in the report’s numbers is that the large percentage of homeless in shelters are at least within the reach of social service agencies and programs.

Which is why an initiative like Homeless Connect Toronto has the potential to do a lot of good.

Homeless Connect plans to bring together support services in fields such as housing, employment, health care, and clothing in one place, for those in need to access and learn more about what is available to them.

The organization is planning an event at the Harbourfront Community Centre on April 13 of next year, and is now looking for sponsors and service providers to get involved.

The local business community can help with sponsorships, covering the costs of getting the word out in the homeless community, and making those in need aware of potential job openings.

Homelessness is far from a downtown issue in Toronto. There are shelters in neighbourhoods around the city.

Local residents can take advantage of what Homeless Connect is doing by finding out the ways they can help, and by connecting to service agencies and programs in need of volunteers.

Pick-up hockey more like pick-me-up hockey

O

ne by one the lads shuffled into the dressing room at the venerable Dave Keon Arena late Thursday night to kick off another season of pickup hockey for The Way And I Mean Waaaaay Over The Hill Gang.

There were plenty of high fives, low fives, in between fives and smiles all around.

Then it was time to get down to business.

We’re talking of the business of sports injury oneupmanship, of course.

Romeo led off the festivities by giving a tear-jerking update on his long-time sciatica as he struggled to squeeze into his hockey pants.

I won’t bore you with all the details of his lengthy oration, but suffice it to say, with such limited mobility in his lower body, we were advised not to be expecting much in the way of backchecking from him for the next little while.

Next up was Scoop. He had his familiar tensor

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY bandages wrapped tightly around both wrists. Still battling carpal tunnel syndrome, alas, he sighed.

It was tough to follow with all the fancy terminology he used, but the gist of his tale seemed to be that he couldn’t see the light at the end of that carpal tunnel. In short, given the restriction of movement in his hands, he was letting us know we shouldn’t expect to see any passing from him in the immediate future.

Two tear-jerking Kodak moments right after another brought to you by OHIP. But wait, sports fans.

There was more, much more.

The Hulk informed us his nagging shin splints were acting up again. That meant no back-checking on the horizon for him.

Knox reported his bothersome elbow ligaments were

so tender he wasn’t even sure he’d able to get his skate laces tied, let along grip a stick. Ergo, no passing from him anytime soon.

Footsteps notified us that his always problematic Achilles tendon felt like it was on fire. Hence, no backchecking for him in the days ahead.

Gramps gave us a heads up that his aching rotator cuff was giving him fits.

Consequently, we shouldn’t expect much in the way of passing from him down the road.

And Frick said he was recovering from a high ankle sprain while his long-time line mate Frack added he was battling a low ankle sprain. The verdict: no backchecking for either of them for the time being.

And on and on it went ad nauseam. But it didn’t stop there.

It continued well past nauseam, until there was only one player left: Slick.

A hush fell over the dressing room.

Slick said he was suffering from the worst groin strain in his career and invited any skeptics to inspect the area personally. All present respectively declined. When it comes to the condition of one’s groin, one’s word is all that is necessary. So, we simply pencilled him in for no back-checking, too.

And there you have it. The Way And I Mean Waaaaay Over The Hill Gang is back to kick off yet another season of their unique brand of hockey.

Or are they? Hmmm. Now that I think about it, given their frail condition, it’s hard to believe any of them will actually be able to muster up enough strength to drop a puck for the opening faceoff.

Letter: Tory blasts w‘politicking’ In an open letter to Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) elected officials, Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance chair John Tory called for a “laser focus” to transit planning.

esley MageeSaxton is mesmerized by the video game he’s playing.

Nothing unusual about that for a 13-year-old boy.

But the game system the Scarborough teenager is using was built to ensure children with cerebral palsy (CP) get exercise while playing.

CP is a condition caused by brain damage before birth or early in a child’s life that affects muscle movement and posture.

Developed by North York’s Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and Queen’s University, the “exergames” are part of a project called Cycle to Fun that combine fitness and

virtual games to motivate kids with CP to exercise while gaming.

Not only do players use joysticks to control their avatar’s movements, but they must cycle on a specially adapted exercise bike to power the games. pedal power The system has six games, developed with feedback from Wesley and other children, which can accommodate up to eight players.

During a demonstration at Holland Bloorview on Oct. 3, Wesley was playing a game called Gekkoo Race against another boy with cerebral palsy in Vancouver.

While CP keeps him confined to a wheelchair most of the time, Wesley has

noticed an improvement in his well-being since he started playing the games.

“It makes it easier to walk. It makes it easier to transfer between my (wheel)chair and the bed because my legs are stronger. I feel more physically fit, so to speak,” he said.

“This set-up helps me get more exercise. I could operate a hand-held control fine before (with other games) but this helps me get exercise as well as play video games, which is hard for kids with CP my age.”

The games have been developed to accommodate differences in children’s physical abilities. That means a child who can pedal faster than others doesn’t win every race, said Wesley, who lives in Scarborough’s Highland

Creek neighbourhood.

“It’s balanced out with everybody, which makes it more fun for children who can’t pedal very quickly.

They still have the chance to win the race, get into the fray,” the articulate teenager said.

Wesley is thrilled he and other children with CP were able to give their feedback about the games, something that is more significant as emerging video game technology doesn’t accommodate children with disabilities.

“It’s extremely, extremely important because one thing I’m getting frustrated with nowadays is the big commercial consoles like PlayStation and Xbox are taking a more motion directive. You control the movement on the screen with

your motion, like waving your hand would wave the character’s hand or moving your leg would move their leg,” he said.

“As you can see, people in wheelchairs wouldn’t be able to play those games.

I feel the major consoles haven’t taken that into mind and just went ahead with the whole motion control, which leaves children with disabilities disappointed because they can’t play all the fun games.” keep kids active Holland Bloorview’s Dr. Virginia Wright is on the team that developed the games and is studying their benefits.

“We’re always trying to keep kids active, whether they have cerebral palsy or

whoever they are,” she said.

“That’s really the unique part of this. In order to play the game, you have to use your own body power so it’s a fabulous way of getting exercise.”

Researchers are hoping the games will benefit kids with CP in particular, Wright said.

“We like to hope because these kids are having more limitations as they’re getting older because of joint restrictions and the spasticity so it makes it more difficult for them to move as they get taller,” she said.

“We really wanted to find a way to help these kids in particular move a lot more.”

‘It’s a phenomenal marathon’ >>>from page 1 in his 300th – yes, 300th – marathon Sunday when he, along with thousands of other runners, participate in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon downtown.

“It’s my 300th and such a good event,” Rayman said. “It’s a special day for me. It’s a phenomenal marathon, my second favourite, New York being the first.”

After his first marathon, Rayman entered two to three a year. This year alone, he has participated in 19, down from his alltime high of 21 in one year, two years ago.

“Sometimes I have to get up early, two, three in the morning,” said Rayman, who sold his dental practice two years ago and now works as an assistant professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry. “My minimum is a 30-minute run.”

Even a terrible respiratory infection several years ago didn’t keep him inside, although it kept him from work for two days. “I got up, ran, and went back to bed,” he said.

Though he had to pass up two marathons last year because of a sore back, he didn’t let injury keep him inside. And when the weather is icy, he slips on shoes with spikes on the bottom.

Nor does travel affect his passion. If Rayman has to be up at 5 a.m. to catch a flight, he rises at 3:30 a.m. to run. And he admits some distant destinations, like Australia, will have to wait, as flying times will interfere with his running streak.

“I try not to think about it,” he said, when asked how he might feel when his streak ends, adding he doesn’t have an end date.

With a personal best time of two hours and 47 minutes in the late ’80s, Rayman has slowed down his clock time.

“It’s been very hard for me,” he said. “I used to run two hours and 50 minutes, and this past weekend in Ottawa (for a marathon) I ran over five hours. But I

don’t have time goals.”

Rayman, who has run marathons at various sites, including Miami, Arkansas, Amsterdam, Belgium, Ohio, New York City and 10 times in Boone, North Carolina, credits wife Marsha for her unyielding support.

“I did my first trail marathon north of Huntsville this summer, jumping over trees, running over rocks and through mud,” he said. “I had to walk the last 28 kilometres. It took nine hours to finish, and she was there.”

And his wife won’t be the only one there when Rayman laces up Oct. 20.

Some of his students are planning to run with him,

and they are also raising money for the Scotiabank Charity Challenge – $300 per class in honour of his 300th marathon – for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.

Two weeks after the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Rayman will head to Hamilton to take part in another one, he said, adding he’d like to keep going as long as possible.

But he is planning on cutting down his marathon numbers next year to 12 – at least it’s a thought.

“It’s expensive,” he said.

“But it’s part of my life. I spoke at graduation last year, and I said family is first, profession is third, running is second. You can’t let your profession take over your life. Any hobby, whether it’s skiing or cycling, makes for a fuller life.”

Ford-Ainslie an ugly breakup It was an aggressive move

by Mayor Rob Ford to send robocalls to the constituents of Ward 43 Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie Friday evening. One might say it went over the top in its aggression, straight on to intimidation and bullying, or to use Ainslie’s words, “thuggery.”

But it’s not surprising.

Never mind Ford’s generally pugilistic modus operandi when it comes to local, retail politics. Never mind that Ainslie had broken with the mayor on his vision for a subway-at-all-costs for Scarborough residents.

The two hadn’t seen eye to eye really since the beginning of the term. Ainslie started out, installed as the chair of the Toronto Public Library Board, where he did his best to implement the mayor’s early-term cost-cutting agenda – ultimately getting caught up with the mayor’s office in the stumble over branch cuts that emerged in the 2011 budget process.

And when it came time to replace the budget chief,

����� ������ ��� ���� Ainslie – an experienced committee member willing to do the job – was passed over.

On the other side of the equation, Ainslie wasn’t afraid to go on the record to the Toronto Star when they were investigating allegations that the mayor had shown up appearing to be intoxicated for the annual Garrison Ball.

Ainslie said those allegations were true.

So Ford took to the telephone lines, on his own dime, to tell Ainslie’s constituents that it was “extremely, extremely unfortunate” that Ainslie “did not listen to his constituents,” and “led the charge” against the subway in Scarborough. The implication is clear: that good-hearted Scarborough folk should cast their votes elsewhere.

Ainslie came back swinging Tuesday. He’s taking the matter to the city’s integrity commissioner. He called the

robocall adventure “a blatant act of political thuggery.”

It’s a shame he couldn’t have found those words sooner.

Ainslie was right to raise questions about the financial realities of the subway plan.

Yet as recently as July, Ainslie supported moving along with that plan – even though many of the same funding problems existed. In an interview, he explained that he’d hoped the city could negotiate those away by the Sept. 30 deadline council set. But hope for such a resolution was as faint then as it is now.

Now it’s off to the integrity commissioner, who’ll be asked to rule on whether Toronto Council’s code of conduct is copacetic with aggressive robocalling in the wards of one’s political enemies.

While that sorts itself out, we might show a little understanding about the vehemence with which Ainslie directs his rhetoric toward Ford. As breakups go, this is an ugly one.

So is Toronto’s subway debate finished? Not a chance

S

o is it over?

After Council’s 24-20 vote in favour of a subway extension over LRT, after the Mayor’s consent to tax increases totaling 1.6 per cent, and the federal government’s $660-million promise for the new line, is the debate finished?

Not a chance.

This is an issue that’s too good to resolve.

The Mayor‘s position is the easiest to understand.

Recent published polls show that his base strongly favours what is called the Scarborough subway. That residents in the former cities of Toronto and East

In terms of the Mayor’s seemingly perpetual campaign, it was an easy decision to target the one Scarborough councillor who voted against him, and so extend the life of the issue.

Nor did Council’s decision conclude matters for the provincial government.

Although the Queen’s Park recommended one route and is paying most of the

bills, Council drew its own line on the map plus asked for more money. In turn the minister responsible for transit advised that the Province now expects detailed assessments for both routes – a decision that will add two years before construction begins.

Queen’s Park wants the decision delayed for much the same reason as the Mayor. The governing Liberals realize that being recognized as a subway champion will assist them in this spring’s provincial election, just as it helped retain their seat in Scarborough during a

recent by-election.

As long as what passes for debate remains at the level of emotional election slogans, building that subway extension will be as protracted and acrimonious as possible, simply because that is in the interests of both the Mayor and provincial government.

For another view, take a look at the last poll results.

When asked to compare a two- or three-stop subway with a seven-stop LRT, the LRT was considered to be more appropriate. What about Scarborough residents? They preferred the LRT by a ratio of two to one.

All of which was completed before revised costs were recalculated: from about $200m per subway stop at the time of the Sheppard line, to over double per stop for the route into Vaughan, and now over double again in Scarborough.

It is as if cost, ridership, or planning considerations do not matter.

Success in Scarborough led the Mayor to consider reprioritizing transit citywide within a week of his victory. “To be fair,” he said, “the downtown people have enough subways already.”

Next he targeted the

already funded LRT projects on Sheppard and Finch, saying, “Obviously the next election is going to be fought again on subways ...

I want to connect McCowan to Don Mills – just do the Sheppard line – then I’m going to go to Finch and look at the Downtown Relief line.”

As long as residents accept caricatures as truth, then politicians will endlessly re-open decisions, and policy will be taken down dangerous paths.

What is a preventive mastectomy?

People around the world were shocked to learn that actress Angelina Jolie opted to have a double mastectomy in 2013 to reduce her risk of breast cancer.

Jolie, who was 37 years old at the time of the procedure, reportedly learned that she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. In addition, the actress has a family history of cancer. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56.

By having a preventive mastectomy, Jolie reduced her breast cancer risk from 87 percent to 5 percent, according to an op-ed piece she authored in The New York Times. Jolie is not the only well-known actress to opt for a preventive mastectomy, as fellow thespian Christina Applegate had a similar procedure in 2008 after learning she had a mutation of the BRCA1 gene.

These highly publicized cases have left

many women wondering if a preventive mastectomy is something they should consider.

BRCA stands for "breast cancer susceptibility genes," a class of genes known as tumor suppressors, says the National Cancer Institute. Mutations in these genes have been linked to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

A person's risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer is greatly increased if he or she inherits a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2. Mutations in these genes could also put a person at increased risk for other cancers.

Genetic tests can check for muta-

tions in BRCAgenes. During such a test, a blood sample is taken, and if a mutation is found, a person may get genetic counseling and work with a doctor to develop a plan of action. It is important to note that not all people with a genetic mutation will get breast cancer or ovarian cancer.

The National Cancer Institute's "SEER Cancer Statistic Review" states a woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 is about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation.

Although there is no surefire way to determine if a person with a mutated

gene will develop breast cancer, many women who are considered high risk opt for a preventive mastectomy to reduce their risk. Women who have a family history of breast cancer, have received positive results from gene testing, have already had cancer in one breast, or have dense breasts that make testing difficult may want to get a preventive mastectomy.

The decision to get a preventive mastectomy is not one to take lightly. Many breast centers are staffed with breasthealth specialists, genetic counselors, breast surgeons, and reconstructive surgeons who can help patients make the best decision. Second opinions are strongly recommended for women considering a preventive mastectomy.

Women should understand the options available to them if they have an extremely elevated risk of breast cancer or ovarian cancer.

‘...and Stockings for the Ladies’ one-man show offers a rich theatrical experience

I

t seems unfair to call Attila Clemann’s play ...and Stockings for the Ladies a oneman show, because in just under two hours, performer Brendan McMurtry-Howlett introduces us to nearly two dozen characters, fleshing out the story of air force leader Ted Alpin and his single-minded determination to help Jewish refugees in post-war Germany.

Put together with a good deal of creativity and imagination, ...and Stockings for the Ladies allows the lone performer the chance to create a gallery of characters who are all part of stories Alpin documented in his letters written from the scene.

Throughout the show, McMurtry-Howlett simply changes his expression, voice and position to differentiate the people he is portraying.

The play attracted acclaim after it premiered at the St. Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival in 2007, and this led to subsequent productions in Toronto and New York.

For this production by the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company and RustWerk ReFinery Productions, new material has been added drawn from Alpin’s letters, which are kept in the archives at York University.

Zach Fraser has directed the presentation with precision and McMurtry-Howlett’s performance will dazzle with his lightning-fast changes in voice and demeanor.

The simple set leaves the star with plenty of spaces to create each scene, and it draws heavily upon the imagination of the audience members to flesh out the details.

This is a performance rich in theatrical innovation.

Not having seen any of the previous incarnations, I was not prepared for the emotional rollercoaster ride this play offers. Alpin organizes picnics for the refugees in the Displaced Persons Camp of Bergen-Belsen, distributing food and supplies using military

resources while battling his superiors.

Each chapter reveals more layers of a man who knows what is right and wants to do what he feels is right.

The author, Attila Clemann, happens to be Ted Alpin’s stepgrandson, and his connection to the hero does not in any way diminish his perspective. The resulting play gives a realistic portrait of the man and the people he was helping. ...and Stockings for the Ladies is on stage in the Studio Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts until Oct. 24.
