Alzheimer’s Centre of Excellence is ‘dream come true’ LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Memory is vital to the Jewish people.

That is why North York’s One Kenton Alzheimer’s Centre of Excellence spearheaded by B’nai Brith Canada is so important, Rabbi Daniel Korobkin said at the facility’s opening on Monday.

“When I see the beautiful building and what promise this holds for people who suffer from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and their families, I think about the fact the Jewish people in particular are experts at remembering,” he said.

He pointed to commandments in the Torah and acts perpetuated against the Jewish people by their enemies.

“Memory is so important for us because our collective memory keeps our people alive and vibrant and continuing through the end of history,” Korobkin said.

“That is why we’re so sensitive when we see a loss of memory.”

Noting the great pain caused when a family member with

Alzheimer’s can no longer remember loved ones’ names and other details, Korobkin said it is crucial to keep the memory of the Jewish people and its individuals alive.

The centre, at 1 Kenton Dr. at Bathurst Street north of Finch Avenue, sits on land donated

by Martha and David Sud, after whom the 45-bed residence is named.

It will offer services such as medication management, housekeeping, 24-hour call bell emergency response, patient location systems and kosher meals.

Bringing together businesses, researchers and non-for-profit organizations, the centre will also include a “living laboratory” that will develop and test new technologies, products and services to improve Alzheimer’s care, said Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev).

Calabrian association gives gift to HRH The Calabrian Benevolent Association of Ontario donated $500,000 towards the construction of the new Humber River Hospital at a ceremony last night.

Association founders and hospital officials gathered Oct. 23 at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery at the Columbus Centre at 901 Lawrence Ave., west of Dufferin

Street, for the announcement.

In recognition of the gift, the lounge outside of cardiology will be named in the association’s honour.

The association was formed by a group of Calabrian professionals and entrepreneurs devoted to initiatives that help the Italian and broader community.

The donation to the hospital

was made by the association’s founding members.

Humber River, under construction at Hwy. 401 and Keele Street, will be North America’s fully digital hospital.The $1.75-billion hospital is expected to open in 2015.

At 18, her weight skyrocketed and she suffered from depression. She hadn’t had a regular menstrual cycle in a year.

Several years later, at 23, the York resident gave birth to her daughter. A post-partum blood test check-up five weeks later revealed something puzzling; her iron numbers were high, something uncommon for a woman who had just given birth.

“The blood test showed I never had a baby,” Walters said, adding she chalked up the results to being young and resilient.

But as she entered her 30s, her concerns became greater.

A clean eater with a superactive lifestyle, Walters was unable to lose weight, no matter what she did. Joint pain became more intense, her hair was thinning, and eczema covered her skin.

“I tried eating really clean, and when I was not able to lose the weight, I felt it wasn’t worth the effort, so I gave up,” she said, adding another bout of depression followed.

After enrolling in fitness programs, and watching what she ate, Walters was able to lose weight – a frustrating 12 pounds in a year and a half.

“Doctors told me if I lose weight I’ll feel better,” she said. “I was tired all the time.

I thought, is it because I have a kid? Or is something going on with me?”

After finding a doctor who delved deeper into Walters’ symptoms, she was diagnosed in February 2011 with hereditary hemochromatosis.

According to the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society, hereditary hemochromatosis is the most common genetic disorder affecting Canadians, with one in nine people of mostly Northern European descent being carriers and 1 in 300 are estimated to have two copies of the gene that puts them at risk for iron overload.

It is a crippling, potentially fatal condition caused by a defect of iron metabolism that leads to iron overload in vital organs, joints and tissues. The complications caused by the disorder are preventable if a

diagnosis is made before the excess iron causes irreversible damage, and effective treatment exists.

Hereditary hemochromatosis, or iron overload, is an inherited disorder that causes the body to absorb two to three times the normal amount of iron. Over the years, the excess iron builds up in the vital organs, joints and tissues where it can cause a number of debilitating and potentially fatal conditions such as liver and heart disease, diabetes, impotence and arthritis.

Because early symptoms can be non-specific and attributed to many other causes, hemochromatosis can be difficult to diagnose until more extensive damage has occurred. Even then, hemo-

Civitan arena decision deferred Toronto Council will finally make a call on the new location of an arena to replace the Don Mills Civitan arena in January, after a vote last week by the Government Management Committee to defer a plan to build the new arena at York Mills and Don Valley Parkway.

The plan recommended by staff would see the city release a request for proposal to build the $24.5-million multi-pad arena on city-owned land at the northeast corner of the intersection.

The question of what to do with a replacement of the arena has been ongoing since 2007.

The original preferred site was at Hwy. 401 and Don Mills Road, but when the Don Mills Centre was slated for redevelopment in 2009, the city considered the idea of locating the arena within the redevelopment.

But in a settlement with the developer at the Ontario Municipal Board, things changed again, and the city and the developer entered into an agreement whereby the city would lease the lands until Oct. 31, 2020.

At that point, cash in lieu of parkland from the development would contribute to the construction of a new arena elsewhere.

Finally, in 2012, council directed that the city identify two sites: at York Mills and the DVP, and on the southwest corner of Eglinton Avenue East and Don Mills Road, at the Ontario Science Centre.

The committee voted to put off the final decision as to the location after Don Valley West Councillor Jaye Robinson said there hadn’t been adequate consultation in her ward.

eadership is an important skill to acquire in life. However, many people, in particular youngsters in at-risk neighbourhoods do not have as many opportunities to gain those important skills.

Thankfully the charitable organization Kids Now has taken up the challenge, offering an afterschool program where youth in grades 7 and 8 can empower themselves and gain confidence.

Youth volunteer for the 12-week program and are paired with mentors who help drive home the importance of self-esteem, setting goals, communication, conflict resolution, and stress management.

Kids Now mentors come from all walks of life including corporate employees, university students, and even former Kids Now participants.

Kids Now is a chance for corporations, companies, Torontonians and even politicians to become mentors to youth.

This is something that would not only help the lives of youth, but create a community, a city where people believe in themselves, which leads to believing in their city and the neighbourhoods they call home.

The Kids Now program flourished in several schools in Toronto, in particular St. Luigi Catholic School where students raised funds for Meagan’s Walk, as well as supported a village in Kenya and ran a food and clothing drive to help the less fortunate.

It is obvious that giving youth the right skills – leadership being just one – they will take up a challenge and become better citizens. It is now time for mentors of various stripes to help mould even more youth to become all they can be.

Comedy Nite raises for Sick Kids w$70,000

The second annual Skate With Daniel Comedy Nite, held in memory of North York’s Daniel Bertoia, was a huge success.

The Oct. 18 event raised $70,000 for brain cancer research at the Hospital for Sick Children.

The fundraiser featured a patient who shared her story of being diagnosed with brain tumours five times. The headliner was comedian Angelo Tsarouchas.

Bertoia died of a brain tumour on Aug. 20, 2008 at the age of 18.

She died on Oct. 9, 2011, about seven months after former minister of human resources and skills development Diane Finley visited North York’s Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue to announce $75,000 in funding towards an elevator to accommodate people with disabilities in the five-storey building north of Sheppard Avenue between Dufferin and Bathurst streets.

s part of the dedication ceremony, there was also a signing ceremony that will see the synagogue be an emergency place of refuge for Eva’s Initiative, which provides shelter and programs for homeless youth.

In addition, the event recognized the synagogue as a safe haven for the Bathurst Manor community and beyond in times of emergency or disaster, noting the building stood as a beacon during Toronto’s massive flood on July 8.

The synagogue has been synonymous with accessibility for almost 60 years ago, thanks in large part to founding rabbi Joseph Kelman, said Michael Kerzner, chair of the board.

Wise herself had difficulty climbing stairs since she used two canes to walk after a fall at a grocery store left her injured.

“It’s difficult for me, but it’s not about me. Sadly, we have to tell (parents) we can’t accept their children,” she told The Mirror at the funding announcement on March 4, 2011.

“We want to be accessible to children and families of all abilities. I think it’s very important to make our centre accessible, especially children in wheelchairs.”

Wise’s sister, Marilyn Berg, said her sibling would have been thrilled with the project, made possible through funding from the federal government, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Beth Emeth donors.

“I think she would have been very pleased to see the project finalized and completed. She worked very hard at it. She was extremely intense about feeling there was a need for this in the shul,” she said.

“He believed then, as we do now, that a promise builds relationships and trust. He promised that no one should be left behind and denied access to structures or programs simply because of their special needs,” he said.

“And he built trust in the community as a whole that our synagogue must be more than just a house of worship. It could act to serve the greater community in other ways.”

Other speakers who praised the project included Rabbi Howard Morrison, York Centre MP Mark Adler, York Centre MPP Monte Kwinter and York Centre Councillor James Pasternak.

On Monday, the 13-member panel published Hard Truths about Transit,

A public education campaign will launch across the TTC next year to encourage riders to offer up their seats to expectant mothers.

The TTC will place advisory decals aboard all vehicles in support of the measure, which Ross said comes as a result of provincial accessibility requirements and not – as has been reported by some media outlets – a strategy to improve rider etiquette.

Also planned is the installation of blue seat inserts on all TTC vehicles designating priority seating.

Could bike lanes once again be election fodder for Torontonians?

J

ust in time for the 2014 municipal election, it looks like Toronto Council is going to be talking big bike lanes again.

This week, Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee voted to re-start the environmental assessment of bike lanes along Bloor Street.

It should also send a shiver up the spine of any regular downtown bicycle commuter. Just about four years ago, cycling advocates convinced the council at the time to put bike lanes on Jarvis Street, and nearly got a separated bike lane pilot project on University Avenue, too.

The Jarvis bike lane was good for cyclists, but better for politicians willing to stir up anger over what they characterized as those cyclists’ sinister and overweening ambitions. There

david nickle the city wasn’t much consensus in the 2010 mayoralty race, but nearly everyone agreed there was a war on, that war was against “the car,” and Jarvis Street was its battleground.

And so it was that the new council voted to pull the lanes out and widen the road again, against the wishes of the local councillor and community. As an afterthought a year later, council ordered the city to stop studying that other big bike lane project along Bloor.

Now, it is about to start up again, and from a transportation planning point of view, it makes a great deal of sense. The city is studying a bikeway along

Dupont just to the north of Bloor. What happens there affects what happens on Bloor and vice versa.

And it’s not for nothing that Bloor is such a grail for bike nuts. All the public transit along Bloor is below ground, which means cyclists need contend neither with buses nor streetcar tracks, and it crosses many pedestrian- and bike-friendly communities already.

It sounds perfect. But going into an election next year, it’s just as perfect an example for nay-saying politicians to hold up as the latest example of a permanent war against automobiles and their drivers. It’s hard to see how pushing along with even an environmental assessment now will result in anything but a push-back from what has previously shown itself

to be a powerful anti-bike sentiment in a large part of the electorate.

This is not to say that bike commuters should despair and the city should shelve what is a good plan.

A Bloor Street bike lane’s a good idea – just as it

would be to extend the bike lanes back east along the Danforth. It would make the city safer, greener, and maybe even a bit more physically fit on average as commuters from all over the city saw a better option in biking.

But wouldn’t it be nice if it didn’t also fuel the kind of divisive and disingenuous politicking that burned so bright in 2010?

One Kenton is a necessary facility as a growing number of Canadians are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and demen-

tia, Goodyear said.

“It is indeed a devastating life sentence for the families and the estimated 500,000 Canadians who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia,” he said, adding almost one in 11 Canadians over the age of 65 are affected.

The number of Canadians with the disease will double in a generation, said Marc Bissell, chair of the One Kenton board.

The centre is playing an important role in filling the

void of services and programs needed to meet the needs of Canadians with the disease and their families, he said.

In the 2011 census, the percentage of people in Bridle Path-Sunnybrook-York Mills who list English as their Home Language is 86 per cent, according to the 2011 census. That number is 64 per cent in all of Toronto.
