There exists a myth that those who rely on food banks are lazy or have made bad choices. This is absolutely not the case, stress leaders in the fight against hunger, not only in Toronto, but across the country. “People who use food banks are the same as you and me. They’re people who have experienced job loss, sickness, or mental breakdown. It can happen to any of us,” said Gail Nyberg, executive director of the Daily Bread Food Bank, the largest provider of food relief in the GTA. “We’re here to give them a hand while they’re down and get them back on their feet.” The Etobicoke-based distribution centre that provides food and resources to as many as 200 food programs across Toronto distributes 600,000 hampers a month to its member agencies – one third of those in need are children, Nyberg said. The
registered charity’s latest ‘Who’s Hungry’ report that looks at the year past will be released in September. “We know we’re starting to see a dramatic increase (in food bank use). This replicates what we’re seeing in the economy: precarious jobs, part-time and contract; retail outlets closing and plants shutting down,” Nyberg said. People who have lost their jobs typically don’t fall into dire straights immediately, particularly if they qualify for Employment Insurance. Food banks are accessible once a week to receive two to three days’ worth of food for each member of the family. “We’re in our lean time now, too. We don’t get a lot of donations,” Nyberg said. Campaigns, such as Hunger Awareness Week, which takes place Sept. 19 to 23, help bring attention to the issue of hunger in Canada, and sees food banks >>>STRAINING, page 8
A self-styled commuter film festival has proven TUFF enough to return for its 10th year of screenings.
There was some concern the Toronto Urban Film Festival would end after last year due to funding concerns, but not only is TUFF back, it’s bigger than ever, says executive director and founder Sharon Switzer.
“Last year, there were a whole lot of changes going on, but the intention was always to continue,” said Switzer during an interview with Metroland Media Toronto this week. “We’re hoping to keep it going for another 10 years.” The festival has drawn praise for the unique manner
it showcases cinema: on video screens found on TTC subway platforms. TUFF also runs at the same time as the Toronto International Film Festival, at a time when local interest in independent cinema is at fever pitch. Sw i t z e r s a i d s h e w a s approached by festival spon-
sor Pattison Onestop, which maintains and operates the TTC’s ad space as well as all subway platform video screens, to continue TUFF for another year. “I had to do no convincing, Pattison contacted me and said ‘we’d like to continue’,” >>>FILMS, page 6

League of Rock keeps musical dreams alive JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com While adulthood tends to bring about the types of responsibilities that can put an end to dreams of rock and roll stardom, midtown Toronto resident Terry Moshenberg has spent the past decade making sure music lives on. Moshenberg is the founder of League of Rock Canada, an organization that brings people aged 18 and up together to form bands after they’ve put down their guitars, drumsticks and microphones in pursuit of more mainstream careers. He noted that he himself was one of the very people the league hopes to attract, having hung up his career to form a software company. “I was your textbook closet guitar player guy, part of the
hidden musical population,” he said. When he sold off his software company and wound up having to go through a long civil litigation process, he decided to provide an outlet for that hidden musical population. While not everyone who joins is professional calibre, participants do require some musical skill. “It’s like a pick-up hockey league for musicians, and you might join a pick-up league if you’re out of practice or not a great player, but you wouldn’t join to learn how to skate,” Moshenberg said. “We want people who can string three chords together, or who can keep a tune or keep a beat.” The league helps people boost their musical and performance chops, build confidence and learn the business of music. Most important, however, is the creative outlet
it provides to doctors, parents, lawyers and the like. “As adults, we tend to bury our creativity when we get families and kids,” he said. “Everyone comes into it with baggage – you’re 50 and you’ve got family stress and professional stress, so (having an outlet) is so needed.” Bands are formed early on in the process, and they work together for 10 weeks, during which time they pick songs, rehearse, perform live and even record a track. “It’s amazing to see how far so many of the people come over those 10 weeks,” Moshenberg said. The League of Rock is celebrating its 10th anniversary year in Toronto with its fall session.

In a world filled with everpresent, celebrity-driven social media, coupled with society’s fixation on rail thin females, it’s easy to see why young girls are feeling pressure not only to look a certain way, but in some cases to feel they need to be someone else entirely. Property management company Morguard is hoping to empower tweens and teens to love themselves just the way they are by raising self-esteem and self-worth through its BeYou campaign. Launching at 21 Morguard properties across Canada, including Centerpoint Mall in North York and East York Town Centre in East York this month, BeYou will offer free events aimed at girls aged nine to 16 who are growing up in a social media society focused on near impossible beauty standards. “We felt so many young girls hang out at shopping centres, and this gave us a unique opportunity to create a female oriented (campaign),” said Sharon Quigley, marketing director for Centerpoint Mall and East York Town Centre. “How girls view them-

The need for food banks still growing
Write us
T
he week of Sept. 19 to 23 has been designated as Hunger Awareness Week in Canada, and it’s a time for all residents to think about and take steps to help deal with what is a growing need across our country, and especially in Toronto. In our feature story in today’s editions, we look at the challenges facing food banks in our city as they deal with an increasing number of clients. Gail Nyberg, executive director of the Daily Bread Food Bank, rightly points out, though, that hunger is not just a week in September. It’s a reality for a lot of families in our city, and the users of food banks come from a wide range of our population. “We know we’re starting to see a dramatic increase (in food bank use),” Nyberg told Metroland Media Toronto. “This replicates what we’re seeing in the economy; precarious jobs, part-time and contract, retail outlets closing and plants Our VieW shutting down.” Ryan Noble, executive director Food security of the North York Harvest Food Bank, said his organization disan issue across tributed more than 2.3 million pounds of food last year through our country 77 community organizations it partners with. He pointed out that Toronto’s booming real estate market coupled with stagnant wages is one of the reasons for such need. Basically, the cost of keeping a home in this city is becoming so high for some people that they are forced to turn to food banks when the money has run out for the month. That’s a scary scenario that should be a warning for all Torontonians as it highlights a growing gap between those who can and cannot afford to live in this city. That being said, it’s clearly more than just a “Toronto problem” as food bank use across Canada has grown by 26 per cent since 2008, according to Pam Jolliffe, interim executive director of Food Banks Canada. What’s sad about this is that when food banks first began to pop up in Canada 30 or so years ago to help deal with the recession of the early 1980s, they were seen as temporary and would not be needed once the economy rebounded. Sadly, that’s not the case and we need a hard national look at what poverty and food insecurity means in Canada and how we are going to address it.

Amalgamated Toronto was born in austerity Every so often it sneaks up on you and smacks you in the ear: Toronto, at least the amalgamated one we live in now, was founded on a myth of nothing grander than austerity. The provincial government forced the amalgamation of the five cities and a borough with old Metro Council with the promise to save tax dollars. Mel Lastman, the first mayor, got elected with the promise to freeze property taxes. Toronto’s newly elected council argued for a while whether it made sense to move from Metro Hall into Toronto City Hall, then once they moved spent considerable time arguing about selling Metro Hall. Twice-weekly garbage collection in North York became a distant memory. Free recreation programs in the old City of Toronto became unaffordable and the city started charging for them. And, as we were
david nickle the city reminded Tuesday morning at the September Government Management Committee, the old City of Toronto’s gift shop closed its tiny doors. I was there at the time and barely recall the decision. Pam McConnell, who was among the 56 councillors who made up the first amalgamated Toronto Council and prior to that had sat on the old Toronto Council, said that it was cut by then-budget chief Tom Jakobek, as an unaffordable frivolity. The gift shop was another casualty of the dour mindset into which young Toronto was born. Well, frivolity has come back into vogue under Toronto’s fourth mayor, John Tory – and on Tuesday, the committee voted to see what it would take to open another shop for tourists at City Hall.
It’s fair to say they supported Councillor Mary Margaret McMahon’s idea with a fair bit of enthusiasm. Why shouldn’t they? Toronto’s wildly overbudget renovation of Nathan Phillips Square has proven to be a hit with the tourists – aided by the considerably less-costly giant glowing TORONTO sign that landed on the north side of the skating rink / reflecting pond thanks to the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. And our weird old City Hall itself is both a civic and a science fiction icon; the now 50-year-old Star Trek television series used postcard images of the two curving towers and saucer-shaped council chamber as backdrops in more than one episode. A gift shop is the least that City Hall should have, and maybe it will have a bit more. Just under a year ago, Toronto councillors approved a plan to look into building a modestly
scaled municipal museum at the eventually liberated Old City Hall just across the road. A bit further afield, councillors will soon be setting the wheels in motion to build a fantastically expensive park near King and Spadina, and another one on Richmond Street. Austerity, at least for the moment, seems a thing of the distant past. It won’t, of course, stay that way for long, as the city gets back to the quotidian business of budget-setting. Mayor Tory is asking for big cuts to spending across the board – 2.6 per cent – in service of an old-fashioned inflationary property tax increase. And that means that however weary we might be, of a city limited by austerity – that is the place we will be heading again, before we know it.

Motorists reminded to be vigilant as school returns tamara shephard tshephard@insidetoronto.com Tuesday’s first day of school brought instruction not only for students and teachers, but also for drivers and parents. Toronto police are reminding drivers to be aware of school zones, including speed limits, as well as no-parking and no-stopping restrictions. Before school Tuesday, officers clocked one driver at 72 km/h in the 40 km/h school zone on Birmingham Street near Second Street Junior Middle School in south Etobicoke. The driver faces a $323 fine and four demerit points. Speeding is the number one driving offence enforced year-round by Toronto police, reported Const. Clint Stibbe with traffic services. Are You Focused on School, Toronto police’s traffic campaign, runs until Friday. “We’re focused on speeding, pedestrian crossings, drivers who double park in no-stopping and nostanding zones, and stop signs to ensure the area is safe for children,” Stibbe said.

All Toronto police officers and parking enforcement officers will be paying attention to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians who commit offences in the vicinity of school zones, including offences related to pedestrian crossovers, crosswalks, intersections and high-risk mid-block crossing.
Films range from absurdist animations to Dystopian narratives >>>from page 1 she said. “Pattison decided they appreciate and value the festival enough to put in 100 per cent of the funding this year, which is different from the past. They have renewed and extended investment in the festival.” This year’s offerings range from absurdist animations to Dystopian narratives, taking less time to watch than wait for the train. Over nine days, 87 films will be screened from 61 countries, including Germany, Iran, Bangladesh and Canada. Each film is one minute long and completely silent. With 63 TTC stations providing viewing areas, Switzer estimates TUFF could reach a potential audience of more than one million daily transit users. The films will also screen at 16 Toronto Public Library branches as well as the atrium of the Toronto Reference Library. All films will be posted to the official festival website. “That’s the way the festival was meant to be, to bring film to people as they go about their day,” she said. Does the Virto V Replace Traditional Hearing Aids? For some clients, the smaller design of the Virto V hearing aids might possibly replace the more traditional behind theear hearing aids, and like many of our other products, these hearing aids can easily connect wirelessly with TVs and smartphones,” explains Prof. Stefan Launer, CSO of the Swiss manufacturer Phonak.
Whether at work, during conversations in small groups or when watching television, one in six adults experience problems when it comes to accurate speech comprehension and hearing in everyday situations. Although background noise and music can impair communication with friends and family, two thirds of those affected still do not use any hearing aids.
Prof. Stefan Launer, CSO of Swiss manufacturer Phonak, presents the new Virto V hearing aids.
There are many reasons for this but most people are not convinced that hearing aids will significantly benefit them or they feel unease about attracting atten tion by wearing a visible hearing aid.
Virtual function of the ear
This is why the Swiss manufacturer Phonak has developed a world first: Virto V. These hearing aids are manu factured using a modern 3D printing process that provides a customfit miniature hearing aid that disappears into the ear canal, making it almost invisible to others. Despite its small size, the latest and most advanced Phonak hearing technology is still contained in the casing.
“Thanks to a new operating system, these new hearing aids can provide a virtual alternative for natural hearing, as experienced by people with normal hearing. Through intelligent control, the software can improve speech under standing, even in loud situations and by utilizing the 3D printing process, these hearing aids fit the natural anatomy of the ear as closely as possible making them truly a customfit solution.
Improve your speech comprehension at work – without attracting attention.
See how the virtually invisible Virto V fits into your daily routine. If you are interested in finding out more about these new hearing aids, the first step is to a book hearing evaluation and determine if the new Virto V technology is the right solution for you. For those who are hard of hearing, this can be particularly useful for finding out whether it is possible to hear and understand more clearly with discreet inthecanal hearing solutions. Straining the food bank system >>>from page 1 across the country hosting events to highlight the work they do and the experiences of Canadians who are assisted by them. Yet, hunger, pointed out Nyberg, is not just a week in September, it’s here all year. She encourages everyone to make a food donation by dropping off items at the nearest fire hall or grocery store. Daily Bread also benefits from companies like Loblaws that have strict rules regarding expiry dates. Food that gets turned away from chain stores can go to food banks, Nyberg said. The North York Harvest Food Bank is the primary food bank for northern Toronto. Last year, it distributed more than 2.3 million pounds of through 77 community programs. Since the recession in 2008, food bank use in the inner suburbs has increased by 45 per cent, according to executive director Ryan Noble. He points to the high cost of real estate coupled with stagnant wages and fewer employment opportunities as some of the reasons for the increase. “People find themselves in food insecurity because of job insecurity. We live in a very rich city in terms of financial and food,” he said. “It’s when housing systems and job systems break down that there’s a problem.” Food bank users are getting a small supply of food so that their money can stretch further, Noble said. For the average user, once rent and utilities are paid for, all that’s left is $4.51 a day, he said. Through its partner agencies, North York Harvest Food Bank also provides clients with further support, such as job skills, settlement services, and housing. The food bank, Noble said, “gives us a captive audience to understand what the root causes (of poverty) are.” The food that is needed at food banks is the same that families want to serve at
their dinner table. It’s healthy, low sodium, low sugar, and proteinpacked. “ T h e r e’s a l o t o f food insecurity awareness around fall and Christmas,” Noble said. That’s why September’s Hunger Awareness Week is timely and important. “It helps raise awareness before we enter our busy season,” Noble said. Pam Jolliffe, interim executive director of Food Banks Canada, a national charitable organization that supports a network of provincial associations, affiliate food banks, and food agencies working at the community level to relieve hunger, said hunger is a symptom of people living in poverty. “It’s a persistent problem – unacceptable in a country like Canada,” Jolliffe said. “Most food banks started 30 years ago as a shortterm solution. Unfortunately, they’re still here many years later.” Overall, food bank use has increased by 26 per cent since 2008. Alberta is suffering economic difficulty because of the sputtering oil and gas industry. So many Albertans are out of work, Jolliffe said. The government has been taking steps to help families out of poverty, she said, citing the new child tax credit, and changes in support to seniors, as well as the ‘Canadian Poverty Reduction’ strategy; however, more steps can be made. “We need Canadians to speak up, to press the government for better policies,” Jolliffe said. SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID! A new hearing aid offer has been introduced for retirees. The hearing aid is a great value, simple to operate and brings IMPROVED hearing to thousands!
At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce the
strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.co Ford Fest will continue on without Rob Ford. The free annual barbecue and celebration, hosted by the family of late former mayor Rob Ford for the last 20 years, will return to its roots in Etobicoke Friday at 6 p.m. “It’s just nice to have the community come together once a year and have a lot of fun and great live music,” Ford’s brother, for mer Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford, said in an interview with media, announcing the return of Ford Fest. “Everything’s free, everyone’s invited. There’s no invitations, it’s open to the public and we look forward to seeing everyone and sharing some great memories of Rob.” This year’s event, which marks the first since Ford’s death from cancer in March,
Metroland file photo
Rob Ford, Toronto’s former mayor who died in March, is surrounded by supporters during Ford Fest at Centennial Park in 2013. The annual barbecue returns Friday.
will take place back where it first began two decades ago - at the home of Ford family matriarch, Diane Ford, at 15 Weston Wood Rd. The family home, Doug Ford said, affords a “warmer atmosphere” than some of the more recent Ford Fests, which proved large affairs, drawing hundreds, if not thousands, of supporters of
so-called Ford Nation. Ford Fest 2015, held last October in the parking lot of the old Sears building at Rexdale Boulevard and Islington Avenue, was Rob Ford’s last. Doug said this year’s Ford Fest will provide his family the opportunity to give thanks for Ford Nation’s unwavering support.

Toronto Hydro to start sending out monthly electricity bills Get used to 12 annual Toronto Hydro bills instead of six. Toronto Hydro customers will soon start receiving their electricity bills each month, as all electrical utilities in the province switch to monthly billing. In a release last week, Toronto Hydro said customers will now begin receiving bills representing about 30
days of electricity use. This change is happening in phases, and customers will begin receiving their monthly bills this fall with everyone transitioned by January. “Monthly billing makes sense for our customers,” Toronto Hydro spokesperson Tori Glass said in the press release. “People are used to paying bills each
month, such as cellphone and gas bills. This will align with other household costs and help customers keep an eye on their energy use more closely.” Toronto Hydro said customers will receive phone messages and postcards to notify them of the change, and pre-authorized payment plans will be automatically
transitioned to align with monthly billing due dates. The amount due will be debited monthly instead of bi-monthly, so customers should be aware of this change. The Ontario Energy Board requires all electrical utilities in the province to transition to monthly billing by the end of 2016.
Monthly billing is coming to Toronto Hydro customers.

Tap dancing, silliness and music offered by production of Dames at Sea In the late 1960s, college students began flocking to see 30-year-old films starring Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell. These films all followed a similar formula: Usually Keeler and her cohorts were featured in a Broadway-bound musical comedy, often directed by a has-been director trying to score one last hit. The films were filled with improbable choreographic fantasies by Busby Berkley. Berkley’s technique of filming kaleidoscopic dance routines from above fascinated college kids. The sudden popularity of these old films inspired a couple of university professors to create a spoof titled Dames at Sea. Produced in a tiny off-Broadway theatre with a cast of six, the show caught on with audiences and ran more than a year. It quickly became a staple of regional and community theatres, finally reaching Broadway
mark andrew lawrence front row centre in 2015. Now The Civic Light Opera Company brings it back to its original off-Broadway roots with a sparkling production at the intimate Zion Cultural Centre. Watched at a special review performance (the show opens tonight), the production is shaping up to be a first-rate musical parody of a genre that has never gone out of style. Stephanie Birrell plays Ruby, the winsome girl who steps off the bus from Utah and almost immediately gets cast in a new musical, Dames at Sea. She quickly gets befriended by Joan, a tough-talking chorine played by Stephanie Douglas. Ruby impresses everyone with her dancing.
Everyone, that is, except the show’s temperamental star Mona Kent, played here to comic perfection by Mickey Brown. Joe Cascone is Hennessey, the harried director who puts the cast through their paces, and also The Captain whose ship plays host to Dames at Sea when the Broadway theatre they were booked into is suddenly demolished. SymmeTry In the end he gets paired off with the leading lady, while a couple of gobs, Lucky (played by David Haines) and Dick (played by Peter Loucas), provide the romantic opposites for Joan and Ruby in an efficient bit of symmetry. The sextet performs choreographer Lesley Ansell’s tap routines with terrific energy. The songs are entertaining pastiches of the Harry Warren tunes that populated the original films.
You’ll have fun matching up the originals with their remakes, but even if you don’t get the connections the songs will wash over you like refreshing sea spray. That’s the fun of Dames at Sea. Audiences familiar with the source material will enjoy the lampoon, while those not familiar with 42nd Street or the Goldiggers series of films can still enjoy the silliness, the pleasant tunes and the first-rate tap dancing. Show DeTailS Dames at Sea is playing at the Zion Cultural Centre, 1650 Finch Ave. E. until Sunday, Sept. 18. For tickets, visit www.civiclightoperacompany.com or call the box office at 416-755-1717. Veteran theatre reviewer Mark Andrew Lawrence offers his insights on stage and musical productions for The North York Mirror. Contact him at nym@insidetoronto.com

The TTC will begin phasing out the Metropass in mid2017. This is the last full year for the monthly transit pass, which is scheduled to be replaced by the Presto fare system. While the TTC is currently focused on getting the new technology onto all of its vehicles and in stations, it’s recommended riders who regularly make use of stations where there’s currently no Presto access to hold off on acquiring the smart fare card. Also in 2017, the TTC intends to stop using station employees for collecting fares. FREE WI-FI ON GO TraNsiT wMORE

The city’s largest walking advocacy group hopes Toronto’s next transportation chief makes improving pedestrian safety a key priority. The city is looking for a new general manager for its Transportation Services department following Stephen Buckley’s resignation earlier this year. In a letter to deputy city manager John Livey, Walk Toronto calls on the city to choose an individual who is “fully in tune” with the belief walking is an essential mode of urban transportation.
