Fox had his right leg amputated six inches above the knee after he was diagnosed with bone cancer in 1977. He decided to run across Canada in an effort to raise money for cancer research and began his Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980. Fox was forced to stop his marathon 143 days later after cancer had spread to his lungs. He raised $24 million. To date, more than $650 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Fox’s name. To register or information, visit www.terryfox.org/Run/
