Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson get keys to the city
| NORTH YORK MIRROR s | Thursday, September 22, 2016
Fri Aug 24, 2012
Honour bestowed on rock icons at Lee Lifeson Art Park in Willowdale Justin skinner jskinner@insidetoronto.con Over the course of their Hall of Fame career, Rush frontman Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson have traveled the world, but few if any places remain closer to the heart for the duo than Willowdale. Lee and Lifeson met in the North York neighbourhood, starting their musical career there before teaming up with drummer Neil Peart to form the iconic prog rock band. It was therefore fitting that Lee and Lifeson were back in
their old stomping grounds on Saturday to both receive the key to the city from mayor John Tory and celebrate the new Lee Lifeson Art Park at the corner of Doris and Princess avenues. Hundreds gathered in the park to see their rock icons be so honoured, braving a chilly rain to cheer on their heroes. “We grew up right around here, we hung out right around here, we skipped school right around here,” Lee said at the event. “We played Earl Haig probably five times…in the early >>>LEE, page 3

Mayor John Tory (right) presents Rush members Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee (left) with keys to the city Saturday during the official opening ceremony for Lee Lifeson Art Park at Princess Avenue and Gladys Allison Place.
Lee Lifeson park devoted to creativity >>>from page 1 days,” Lifeson added. “It was known as The Factory.” Lee said he was “thrilled and amazed” to be recognized with a park named after he and his bandmate of nearly 50 years. More importantly, he said, the park will provide a huge benefit to Willowdale residents and others from across the city. “We’re really happy for the community that there’s some investment in art and leisure for this neighbourhood,” he said. The 7,000 square metre Lee Lifeson Art Park features music-themed installations, a small amphitheatre stage to give up-and-coming Toronto artists a place to play and a large pavilion bearing the likenesses of Lee and Lifeson. “Art is a thing that you pour your heart into, that whatever you’re doing, whatever aspect of life, whatever situation you find yourself in, art elevates, art heals,” Lee said. “It’s what’s given us everything in our lives, so to be
associated with that kind of thought and that concept is amazing to me…fantastic.” Willowdale councilor John Filion was instrumental behind having the park named after two of Canada’s best-known and most beloved musicians. The councilor said the decision to name it after Lee and Lifeson came on quickly. extraordinary musicians “I said ‘it should be somebody in the arts, it should be somebody musical, it needs to be somebody or some people who are fantastic, and wouldn’t it be great if they were from Willowdale?’” he recalled. “It took about three seconds before the light went on. “We wanted to name the park after them not just because they’re rock stars and not just because they’ve sold many, many, many millions of albums and sellout concerts around the world and have been inducted into the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame, but also just because they are such extraordinary, extraordinary musicians.” Before handing Lee and Lifeson the key to the city, Tory noted Rush has always done the city proud, pointing to the band’s eagerness to play SARSfest in 2003 to boost Toronto’s sagging tourism industry and similar efforts to boost morale following severe flooding in Alberta years later. “They’ve done credit to this city,” he said. “We’re proud of them in this city.” While the band played what was touted as its last tour to mark its R40 box set compilation in 2015, both Lee and Lifeson say they enjoy playing and neither ruled out further collaborations. Whether they take up their instruments again for another tour or album, their rock legacy was further cemented with the park naming. “This park will still be here weeks after we’re gone,” Lifeson joked.
The year was 1960, and fiveyear-old Charlotte Orser was attending Sunday school for the first time at St. John’s York Mills Anglican Church, where her parents had just become members. Orser, along with brothers, David, then 10, and Doug, then three, along with three cousins, would put on their Sunday best and head to the church’s upstairs to listen to Bible stories. “We had a lot of fun,” she recalled. Orser was one of hundreds of parishioners who helped celebrate the church’s 200th anniversary at a celebratory service Sunday. Attendees included Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell and Archbishop Colin Johnson, the Anglican Diocesan Bishop of Toronto. Founded Sept. 17, 1816 with Gov. Francis Gore, third Lt.-Gov. of Upper Canada, and Rev. Dr. John Strachan in attendance, the church, at 19 Don Ridge Dr. (in the Yonge Street and York Mills Avenue area), claims to be the oldest Anglican parish church in both Toronto and York Region. The church began as a 10 by 20-metre timber structure built by the community from fallen trees on the land where the church stood. Twenty-five years later, it was replaced with a sturdier stone structure, which remains to this day surrounded by green space on the crest of the Don Valley. St. John’s underwent its most recent renovation in 2014, when $1.6 million was raised to move administrative offices to make way for an expanded social area with kitchen, repair the

roof, refinish old hardwood floors, add an outdoor patio, and restore a 100-year-old Steinway grand piano. Orser, who is still a member of the Don Ridge Drive church, attributes its ability to adapt to members’ needs to its longevity. “I remember as a teen, we had a youth program, where we would listen to music and be together,” she said. “There was a knitting group, a mom and tot group, a lot of women’s groups, and a very well-chosen clergy.” When her son, Richard, and later daughter, Catherine, were born, Orser volunteered in the church’s nursery, which Catherine now helps with.
FROM CONCEPT
Rev. Drew MacDonald said two services were held Sunday: a re-creation of an 1816 sermon, complete with period attire and a town crier, followed by a modern day one. Any given Sunday sees about 250 worshippers attend service, and St. John’s boasts 400 to 500 active members, he said. The church also organizes missions to places like Africa, holds a weekly Q&A forum with MacDonald, and serves a monthly men’s dinner. And to commemorate the church’s 200th anniversary, a new book celebrating the milestone will be released in October, MacDonald said.

e are breaking ground and removing barriers while navigating a cultural shift that has been referred to as the new post-gender era. In a relatively short time period, we have discovered the segregation of the sexes and the use of the pronouns he or she have been identified as obstacles as we welcome transgender people to our table of diversity. The two-gender, binary world of male and female is shifting. We now have gender-neutral driver’s licences, gender-free washrooms, Toby’s Law enshrining transgender people’s rights in Ontario and Bill C-16 working to do the same across Canada. And increasingly, people are adopting a cornucopia of alternative pronouns to the traditional he and she. Like any cultural shift, we are learning through and reacting by altering Our VieW listening our language and behaviours to reflect what we’ve discovered. Hear the In short, we are in the midst of a linguistic revolution that will voices for impact many facets of our lives before it ends. change A recent Angus Reid survey had promising results. Nearly 80 per cent of those participating agree Canada should work to accommodate and protect transgender people in society. To better educate our readers, Metroland has embarked on a three-part series that starts today and continues for the next two weeks to explore the linguistic and cultural implications of these changes. You will hear why the change is needed through the voices of those interviewed by reporter Kim Zarzour throughout her series. Studies show 47 per cent of transgender people have either considered suicide, attempted suicide or self-harmed in the course of their lives, according to Sawyer Arnold, director of Trans Inclusion, PFLAGDurham. “By referring to them by the incorrect gender, you increase the risk and add to the emotional distress,” Sawyer said. Proponents of gender-free washrooms cite safety concerns. Statistics show shockingly high levels of sexual abuse and assault against transgender people. For these people, simply choosing which washroom to use can be a daily dilemma. Changes in language and attitude will help. These changes are organic and will take time to evolve. Respect and decency should be foremost in our discussions. newsroom ph:

Rail deck park a good, but costly, idea
T
oday, Mayor John Tory’s executive committee turns its eye to an ambitious and expensive plan – to build a “rail deck” park, which is to say a park built literally on a deck, spanning over the downtown rail corridor from Bathurst Street to Blue Jays Way. It is certainly ambitious – the park would cover 21 acres of rail lands that currently divide downtown Toronto from its waterfront communities, and replace them with a green swathe of parkland that would provide some recreational relief for one of the fastestgrowing communities of tower dwellers in the country. And, oh Lord, it is going to be expensive: more than $1 billion to construct, according to very preliminary estimates, and more than that to secure the air rights from Metrolinx and CN over those tracks that will allow construction to
david nickle the city take place at all. The executive committee won’t be signing off on that at its September meeting – before that it is just a couple of million dollars, to refine the plans and move things along to the next stage. It’s hard to say that the idea of the park is not a good idea. Downtown Toronto is growing into a giant and potentially precarious residential community, made up of individuals and families squeezed into often very tiny quarters, and the real estate is getting swallowed up. Waiting another five years until the population reaches its breaking point, and then trying to acquire large-sized parkland from the remaining scraps could well be even more
expensive or, worse, simply impossible. The trouble is that while the rail deck park is a good idea, it isn’t the only idea that has caught the eye of Mayor Tory’s council. The city is spending about as much as the rail deck park just a few kilometres to the east, replacing the Gardiner Expressway there with another elevated expressway, against the long-term advice of city planners. A few more kilometres to the east, council has committed to building a one-stop subway extension into Scarborough that costs as much again. And if the park is to go ahead, all of that – park included – will have to be paid for, almost certainly with money that comes from taxes and other revenues drawn from Toronto’s residents. Perhaps this will provide incentive for Toronto council to take its forthcoming
debate on revenue tools more seriously. The mayor, and a majority of council, have made it clear that property taxes are not a candidate for enhancement – and they’ve also made it clear that they don’t want to see the city sit still when it comes to improving and expanding its infrastructure. We should have parks. We should have subways, and light rail. And council has decided that we should have a great elevated highway to aid motorists getting to and through the city’s downtown. But it all leads to a bill that someone will have to pay – and having solidified our aspirations as we have, whoever pays that bill is going to need deep pockets.

it’s not always black & white
BY KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com
Do gender-based words affect our behaviour? Remember baby Storm? The Toronto baby took the world by storm in 2011 when her parents decided not to reveal her gender to the world for her first years of life. Parents Kathy Witterick and David Stock wanted to let Storm decide what gender to identify with and, five years later, she is a she. The couple also made a conscious choice to keep their kids out of public school, to avoid, in part, the school system’s segregation of sexes. What happens when we erase gender divisions? Does going gender-free impact our behaviour? The research is unclear. Lynn Liben, a psychologist at Penn State, studied preschool classes to look at the effects of gender-coded language. She found when teachers lined children up by gender and emphasized gender in speech, (“Good morning, boys and girls”), students showed an increase in genderstereotyped attitudes toward each other and their choice of toys. On the other hand, researchers Kumiko Fukumura (University of Strathclyde, Scotland), Jukka Hyönä and Merete Scholfield (University of Turku, Finland), found no correlation between the pronoun system we use and our gender thinking. In the Finnish language, genders are not differentiated; “hän” refers equally to both females and males, and yet Finns do not think about the gender of people any differently than speakers of English, the researchers report.
It used to be so simple, back in the days of Dick and Jane primary school readers. We learned grammar by memorizing basic rules. Dick was a ‘he’, Jane was a ‘she’, Spot was a dog and together they were … well, they. Turns out, it wasn’t so simple after all. Those clear-cut rules didn’t fit everyone and today those who don’t fit are speaking out, sparking what could be a linguistic revolution. The two-gender, binary world of male and female is shifting. We now have gender-neutral driver’s licences, gender-free washrooms, Toby’s Law enshrining transgender people’s rights in Ontario, and Bill C-16 working to do the same across Canada. And increasingly, people are adopting a cornucopia of alternative pronouns to the traditional he and she. “Gender is not black and white, but language is,” explained Chris Talbot, a female-to male transgender youth from Newmarket. Talbot, 18, prefers to be called he. He spoke with his guidance office in Grade 10 and soon his entire high school had switched references to he. Today, Talbot is studying at Georgian College in Orillia, making use of gender-free washrooms on campus, readily accepted by his male roommates in his school dorm. “People have been amazing about it, really. I’ve never had a bad experience, no bullying, no judging,” he said. “Maybe it’s because (trans
issues) are all over social media, but it has been easier than I thought.” Switching pronouns isn’t smooth for everyone, especially for those who don’t identify as male or female. At 16, Beatrice Vandikas stumbled upon new pronouns being used by an online blogger: fae and faer. “I’d been using they and them not realizing there was anything else. I was elated. I thought, Oh my gosh, that’s perfect! That’s me!” Vandikas had been dating a trans man at the time, dealing with “nasty rumours” in a small-town community, and did not start using those pronouns right away. Now Vandikas is more comfortable using fae (for she/he) and faer (for his/hers/him) – but also less upset when people don’t. Language is constantly evolving, Vandikas said. “It shouldn’t be that difficult, but changes like that are really hard for people, especially when they’re older.” Vandikas’ parents, for example, haven’t yet fully embraced the concept. Faer mother once asked faer to help her understand how fae would like her to talk about faer. Fae was encouraged, but faer mother’s use of the pronouns didn’t last – maybe, fae said, because it was such a foreign concept to the older generation, “so I just said to myself, she’s my mom, I’ll deal with it.” Reading that sentence may have been challenging for even the most open-minded readers, but Vandikas, and others who hope the English language evolves, said it’s worth the trouble. Respecting others is more important than being grammatically
How you can be gender sensitive ■ If you are uncertain about the gender identity of another person and have to refer to them in the third person, use they or them. ■ It is ok to politely ask which gender pronoun a person prefers. ■ If someone explains they are a trans woman, do not use masculine pronouns. ■ If someone explains they are a trans man, do not use feminine pronouns. ■ If you work in an office that has intake forms, include X or Other (if you absolutely must collect information about gender – but consider that you may not actually need information about gender). ■ If you work in a recreation facility, ensure there are trans-positive policies in place so that gender variant people can use the facilities without harassment. ■ Make sure there are gender-neutral bathroom options in your place of work. correct. Words hold power, Vandikas noted, especially when they feel wrong and especially when you have an identity disorder and rely on that perfect pronoun to understand who you are and find a sense of community. “When people say gender pronouns are too confusing, what they are really saying is they don’t want to take the time to question their assumptions about gender,” said York University associate professor Sheila Cavanagh. Gender is more complicated and nuanced than simple male and female, she said. “The importance of language, and gender pronoun usage, should not be underestimated.” Increasingly, professors at York U. and other North American postsecondary schools ask students to indicate their preferred gender pronoun when they introduce themselves. Some go further, allowing students to register their pronouns in the university computer systems; professors are urged to include their pronouns in email signatures.
Alicia Lapointe, PhD candidate at the University of Western Ontario faculty of education, suggested it may be easier for youth, who tend to view gender and sexuality differently. “They’re more fluid and open about it. By high school or postsecondary, it’s too late to unlearn any transphobia or homophobia. Elementary students, in particular, are often bullied because of gender expression.” Lapointe uses nametags that say “please use … pronouns” and introduces herself with: I’m Alicia and I use she, her, hers pronouns. “It’s a way to get people to see that you shouldn’t assume,” she said. “I don’t think we lose anything by acknowledging our wide diversity, or celebrating it. Our society is only better if we celebrate everyone for who they are.”

officers in North York shooting ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com The province’s police watchdog has cleared two Toronto officers in the 2015 shooting of a knife-wielding mentally ill woman in North York. The Special Investigations Unit said multiple people called 911 seeking help for a 45-year-old woman “whose mental health appeared to be deteriorating” around 10 p.m. Nov.16. The woman was among the callers. Two paramedics arrived on scene, a home on Edmonton Drive near Finch Avenue and Hwy. 404, and found the woman holding a meat clever in the kitchen and her young son crying and upset. “Without warning or provocation, she turned on the paramedics and ran at them, screaming and brandishing the knife over her head,” the SIU said in a news release Wednesday. The paramedics got away and the woman returned home. Two officers, firearms drawn, entered the home. “The woman went about her business and made her way to the kitchen sink where she poured herself a glass of water, all the while ignoring the officers’ repeated commands that she drop the knife,” the SIU said. The standoff ended a minute later when the woman raised the knife, turned toward the officers and rushed at them. The two officers didn’t know there was a third officer with a Taser behind them. “He deployed his weapon around the same time as the officers fired their guns,” the SIU said. The woman was shot in the abdomen, pelvis and right arm and was taken to Sunnybrook hospital where she underwent surgery. The woman’s son left the home during the standoff and didn’t witness the shooting. Acting SIU director Joseph Martino concluded the officers’ use of force was justified. The SIU investigates when there is a serious injury or death involving police.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING
We used Sam back in 2014 to sell our Condo. We had asked for a quick closing. We got what we asked for.
This time we found ourselves in a difficult situation dealing with ongoing health issues for both parents who at this time own the property. So, when it came time to decide on a sales rep, Mom and Dad entrusted us with choosing a realtor. Of course we chose Sam. He had done a fabulous job back in 2014. Back then we saw the realtor, the professional and the person. We developed a trust in Sam that was and still is comforting when dealing with real estate transactions. This transaction, without say, went smoothly. We will be referring Sam to anyone we know who may be looking for a realtor. We also highly recommend, by this letter, Sam for anyone who is considering him as a realtor. Sincerely, Jeff and Carmen Barton - 1900 Sheppard Avenue East Unit #1908

Customized PFAFF race car unveiled >>>from page 1 and Hwy. 401. As the official campaign partner, PFAFF is providing three years of marketing support, along with donating $150,000 to kick-start the cause. Another $50,000 donation was made on behalf of a family. The hospital admits more than 400,000 patients annually, providing them with
beds that are between 10 and 25 years old. Dr. Tim Rutledge, president and CEO of NYGH, said beds are often overlooked when it comes to upgrading hospital equipment, adding that beds play a critically important role in patient care. Chris Pfaff, president and CEO of PFAFF Automotive Partners, said he never gave hospital beds much
thought. Pfaff, whose two children were born at NYGH, said his company has partnered with the hospital in the past and hopes to bring awareness to the much-needed cause. A customized NYGH bedturned-race-car was unveiled Tuesday to demonstrate the two organizations’ “commitment to racing to the campaign’s finish line.”

NOW HIRING!
A road toll advocacy group is lukewarm on the province’s first HOT lane. The high occupancy toll lane was recently introduced along the QEW, between Burlington and Oakville, charging single-occupant drivers, who have signed up, a fee for use. The lanes remain free for carpooling provided vehicles contain at least one passenger. It will cost $180 for three months’ HOT lane use, but Transport Futures doesn’t believe it’s enough to persuade people to get out of their congestion-causing cars and onto public transport. In an email, the group that organizes the annual Transport Futures road pricing conference, points out HOT lane use will cost $3 maximum for two-way daily use – less than half that of equivalent trips made on GO Transit. The group wants HOT lane costs to jump to $6.45 a day, equal to the current daily round-trip GO fare.

Another scheme to introduce bike licences in Toronto is set
to be introduced at the Sept. 27 public works and infrastructure committee meeting at City Hall. The motion by member Stephen Holyday will be to study a potential licence system for city cyclists. However, past proposals have been shot down, in part because of the expense required for licensing and overseeing the city’s cycling population. delaYs MIMIco IMproVeMents wMetrolInX
The Mimico Residents Association is taking Metrolinx to task for delaying accessibility improvements to the Mimico GO station. Police to blitz congested intersections Yonge/Sheppard on the list Police will be at seven Toronto intersections in October, working for the second time this year to help pedestrians and motorists move safely at spots where congestion has been the rule, said Mayor John Tory after meeting with his traffic working group Tuesday. At the same time, Tory
announced a thing he’d been hoping to avoid: the closure of the Gardiner Expressway in late October, to finish resurfacing the western Gardiner. However, Tory said there won’t be a need for the fall closure of the Don Valley Parkway. But there will be a return of police to key busy intersections following what Tory called a successful blitz in June.
The city is going ahead with a second phase, from Oct. 3 to 28. “ We will reintroduce this at seven intersections throughout the city,” said Tory, and listed them: York and Front streets; Front and Simcoe streets; Bay and Bloor streets; Queen and Bay streets; Sheppard Avenue and Yonge Street; University Avenue and Adelaide Street; and the Bay Street ‘clearway’.

Emily, SickKids Leukemia Patient
Paint the Town
Today, over 80% of Canadian kids survive cancer. That’s an achievement. And a challenge. The Hospital for Sick Children is a leader in the fight against childhood cancer. Over 1,400 children in Canada are newly diagnosed with cancer each year, and a quarter of them come to the Garron Family Cancer Centre at SickKids. We’re creating a new reality: cancer is no longer a death sentence for children. In fact, in the last 50 years, the survival rate for childhood cancer has increased from 10% to over 80%. Our goal is 100%. Help us get there.
