Food bank appeals for donations to help young people North York Harvest Food Bank (NYHFB) is looking to raise $60,000 and collect 60,000 pounds of food for its Spring Food Drive. The drive will run the entire month of April. “The food needs of young people in our community often go unseen,” Anette Chawla, executive director of NYHFB, said in a release. “Digging a bit deeper, we hear the specific challenges youth face entering the job market, or starting up their lives. Tight budgets can lead to skipped meals and poor diets.” Donated food will go to a network of neighbourhood food banks, community kitchens, pre-natal programs for expecting mothers, shelters for women and youth, and drop-in meal programs. A 45-year-old man is in police custody after a stabbing at a North York office yesterday
morning left four people injured – two of them critically. Police said a man armed with a sharp weapon, possibly scissors or a knife, stabbed four people in a fifth-floor office at 4110 Yonge
St. around 9:35 a.m. Paramedics took the victims to Sunnybrook hospital for emergency treatment. “A man and a woman in their 30s suffered multiple stab
wounds that were life-threatening,” Toronto EMS Supt. Kim McKinnon said. The two other victims, both men in their 30s, were stabilized by paramedics at the scene. Their
wounds are serious but not considered life-threatening. Ceridian, a human resources and payroll company with an office in the building, issued a >>>CERIDIAN, page 11

Seneca College’s male Athletes of the Year are Jimin Jung, left, and Tommy Cheung.
Female Athletes of the Year are Carol De La Cerna, left, and Katie Liu.
Quite a racquet for top athletes at Seneca College
Badminton players in the spotlight DAVID GROSSMAN active@insidetoronto.com
Every year, there is a rebuild of talented athletes at Seneca College. But this past year, the spotlight at the Finch and Don Mills area campus was on badminton. And when athletes and coaches gathered for the year-end celebration of success, it showed as the bollege’s top athletes – and there were four – all came from the Olympic sport that has been traced back to the mid-1800s. In an inexpensive sport, that requires a racquet, shoes and a shuttle, it’s speed, skill and athleticism that dominate. That’s where Carol Dela Cerna and Katie Liu were as the premier female athletes at Seneca while Jimin Jung and Pak Ho (Tommy) Cheung excelled as tops in the men’s category. And all four come from different parts of the world: Dela Cerna from the Philippines, Liu from British Columbia, Jung from South Korea and Cheung from Hong Kong. Dela Cerna and Liu, who made up the women’s doubles pair, had one of the most decorated seasons in college
history winning a silver medal at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association final and finishing the year with a bronze as the third best duo at the national championship. “I was surprised, excited and deeply honoured when they called my name – it really wasn’t expected,” said Dela Cerna, a repeat winner who is graduating from an intensive threeyear program in Aviation Safety and is now planning to go to Australia to pursue a degree. “I won last year and just figured it was time for someone else deserving of this award.” Big swings and big strokes have helped Dela Cerna, who lives in the Victoria Park and York Mills area, become so successful, but it has also been a challenge adjusting from tennis to badminton. “I was a better tennis player and, with hard work, now equally as good in badminton,” said Dela Cerna, a graduate of St. Joseph’s-Morrow Park High School. “The speed of the ball in tennis is one thing, but then dealing with the shuttle is a huge adjustment.” While Dela Cerna said she started playing tennis and badminton for “fun and recreation” her record shows the now 20-year-old having dominated in badminton as a teen winning
the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association Singles title in Grades 9, 10 and 12 and also claiming gold in Grade 11 in doubles. Liu, Dela Cerna’s Seneca partner, was Female Rookie of the Year in the 2012/13 season. Liu could also be moving on as she is finishing a third year in the Game Art and Animation program having studied both the traditional and computer animation production industry. Cheung, a graduate of the University of Toronto, chose Seneca to pursue accounting and finance. Winning the No. 1 male athletic award rattled him. “It was a shocker and I was flattered,” recalled Cheung. “I remember asking them – are you serious? I thought there were so many other great athletes deserving of this award.” Cheung and Jung, who was Seneca’s Male Rookie of the Year award winner last year, bonded in the second half of the past season, upsetting opponents and ultimately earning a silver medal at the OCAA championship. They placed fifth the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association final.

A couple of Harlem Globetrotters dr ibbled into the Earl Haig Secondary School gym Monday to share inspirational stories with the students who will be participating in the World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine event. “It’s a perfect match. We do a lot of the same things around the world,” said Flight Time Lang, who visited the North York high school along with teammate Bull Bullard. The world renowned basketball team has partnered with World Vision for this year’s “Fans Rule” tour to raise awareness of the humanitarian organization’s work in developing countries. Bullard noted three of his teammates recently traveled to World Vision communities in Honduras where they helped secure clean drinking water and met with families of World Vision-sponsored children. “We give back every chance we get,” Bullard said. Both Bullard and Lang encouraged the students in attendance to do their part to raise awareness of the child poverty that exists around the world. local performance They also showed off some tricks, for which the Globetrotters are famously known, and will be performing Friday and Saturday at The Ricoh Coliseum. Grade 12 student Cameron So also addressed his peers about why their school is partnering with World Vision and taking part in the annual 30 Hour Famine starting Friday morning until Saturday afternoon. “It’s one of the largest youth fundraisers,” Cameron said. “We’re trying to raise $10,000 for World Vision.”

Above, Lang and teamate William ‘Bull’ Bullard, right, perform some tricks.
Last year, he noted, the school raised about $7,000 that went toward community development and water sanitation programs. “We’re just trying to support children who are starving each day,” Cameron added. T
he door to a very unique opportunity opened this week for some 20,000 people across Ontario with the launch of the volunteer recruitment campaign for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Games. It’s a great chance for residents young and old to build organizational and leadership skills that could lead to job opportunities. It’s also beneficial to the city, to be able to develop an engaged, experienced volunteer contingent that not only contributes to the strength of our community today, but one that develops a legacy of volunteerism that can be called upon for future events – at the local level or again on the world stage. For these Games, there will be volunteer positions across 16 municipalities in all our view aspects of the events, from antidoping and medical services, Residents can protocol and the Games-time service, to ticketing, venue contribute to news management and ushers at strength of city events. Positions start as early as this September. If you have the time, skills and passion to spare, it’s an opportunity seriously worth considering. It’s a chance to be a part of an exciting, world-class event, to meet new people and learn new skills. But more than that, it’s a chance to directly contribute to the strength of our city and the bonds between our communities. When athletes arrive from the Caribbean and Central, South and North America next year, all eyes will be on our city and the collective force of ambassadors that will be welcoming them. Our communities are already rich with selfless volunteers who work tirelessly at the grassroots level, but this is Toronto’s chance to display our pride for all the world to see. As well, the province will be granting each volunteer at the Games a volunteer certificate, and the Ontario Student Assistance Program is offering benefits to make it easier for college and university students to get involved. Those with additional language skills are especially encouraged to apply. Saäd Rafi, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Games, likens volunteers to the “backbone” of the event and said they will be behind every amazing moment we witness next year. The power of volunteerism cannot be understated, whether it’s on a small-scale locally or helping to host the largest sporting event Toronto’s ever seen. To apply, visit TORONTO2015.org/volunteer

Trying to cheer up a Leaf fan With Toronto likely out of the NHL playoffs it’s not a fun time to be a Maple Leaf fan, needless to say. It’s no picnic trying to cheer one up, either, and that definitely needs to be said. This is what you’re up against. “So, you feel like taking in a Marlies game to get you out of the dumps?” “Nah.” “Come on. What better way to lift your spirits than watching the big club’s No. 1 farm club, the next generation of Maple Leafs?” “Nah.” “It’ll be on me.” “Nah. Thanks, but I don’t want to be around any kind of hockey for awhile.” “I hear ya. A change of pace is necessary. How does this sound? OK, OK. Blue Jays, Blue Jays. Let’s... play... ball! We can go catch a Jays game.” “Nah.” “We can sit in the 500 level. Your fave.” “Nah. I’m not up for any baseball, either.” “But it’s not just about
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY baseball in that part of the building. The atmosphere in the nosebleed section is worth the price of admission. “Nah. A nosebleed won’t do it for me either. Sorry.” “It’ll be on me.” “Nah. “You fancy a TFC match?” “Nah.” “You sure now? They’re a bloody big deal.” “Nah. I’m not up for soccer.” “But they’re not playing soccer. With all the new additions they’re starting to play what they call football around the rest of the world.” “Nah. I don’t feel like football, either.” “It’ll be on me.” “Nah. “Wait a minute. I know: a Raptors’ game.” “Nah.” “But you get free pizza
if they win and score 100 points. You can’t beat that.” “Nah. Getting free stuff isn’t going to get me out my funk either, I’m afraid.” “So you can buy your own pizza, then. Maybe that’ll do it. And if that’s not enough, your ticket can be on you, not me. What’s more, to show you what a bighearted guy I am, you can pay for mine, too. Whatever it takes to snap you out of your current condition, I’m willing to sacrifice. ” “Very funny.” “Really?” “Nah. Nothing can put a smile on my face. Perhaps in a few weeks when I’m feeling better and I reflect back on the gag I’ll get a chuckle out of it, though.” “You mean it?” “Nah. The operative word was perhaps. I wouldn’t get my hopes up.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

CNIB thanks its Toronto volunteers To the editor: In honour of National Volunteer Week (April 6 to 12), Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) would like to thank its incredible volunteers; we couldn’t do what we do without them. CNIB has always been an organization of people helping people, and nowhere is that more evident than in the dedicated work of our volunteers. Our volunteer team stretches from one end of the country to the other – and is made up of Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life. Please remember to take the time to acknowledge the volunteers in your community – especially during this week. A simple “thank you” reminds them that their work is appreciated. On March 25,Tim A. Reuss, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Canada, was joined by company executives, to officially break ground for the construction of the second generation Mercedes-Benz Thornhill retail facility located in the upper northwest quadrant of the Greater Toronto Area. Mercedes-Benz Canada will erect a brand new corporately-owned flagship retail store, from the ground up, on the same property at 228 Steeles West in Thornhill. Demolition of the two former buildings on the 3.2-acre property was completed in November 2013, making way for a new state-of-the-art structure that will be approximatively 130,000 square feet. Sales operations have been temporarily relocated to 5840 Yonge Street in Toronto and service operations are currently managed from 82 Green Lane in Thornhill. Thesignificantinvestmentinthisnewfacilitywillopen up a new chapter for Mercedes-Benz Thornhill which has proudly been serving the automotive community since 1988. With more than two decades of compounded sales growth coupled with an ever-growing product portfolio and a finite amount of space, this new build became necessary for Mercedes-Benz Thornhill to keep pace with the needs and expectations of its clientele. Scheduled to be fully operational in May 2015, the dealership will feature ample space over two floors, incorporating an extensive new and pre-owned vehicle showroom totaling 36,000 square feet. The new facility will also house a dedicated AMG Performance Centre and a smart Centre. An additional 43,000 square feet has been earmarked for the service area, and will include 32 state-of-the-art work bays, six de-
$ tailing bays as well as a six vehicle drive-through, all of which will significantly improve the overall customer service experience. Furthermore, the new site configuration will add a considerable amount of parking compared to the previous facility. “Over the course of the last 25 years, MercedesBenz Thornhill has generated some of the largest sales and service volumes in Canada year over year. Despite several renovations and expansions, the facility was no longer optimal,” saidTim A. Reuss, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Canada. “It’s never a good time to embark on such a massive and disruptive undertaking. We are grateful for our customers’ and employees’ patience and understanding during this elaborate reconstruction phase. It goes without saying that this new facility will further augment Mercedes-Benz Canada’s prominence in the Greater Toronto Area as well as provide an outstanding new platform for all of us to deliver the absolute best automotive experience possible for our valued customers.”

Newtonbrook Secondary celebrates a half-century of educating students
FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com
I
t was the day after Labour Day in 1964, and a new high school was opening in the Township of North York. Days prior, Robert F. Kennedy resigned as U.S. Attorney General, Canadian actor Keanu Reeves was born, and singer Roy Orbison released his future hit, Oh, Pretty Woman. But on this day, 610 grades 10 to 13 students walked into Newtonbrook Secondary School for the first time, the girls in skirts and the boys in slacks and white shirts, the type of smart-casual look that faded over time. Months later, in the winter of ’65, the school would officially be opened by Prime Minster Lester B. Pearson. Though it was a new school, administrators didn’t waste time getting things rolling. Scarlet and grey were established as the school’s colours, the school polar bear mascot was named Newton (now Polaris), a year book was printed that first year, sports teams including football and basketball were formed, and the initial musical – South Pacific – involved 250 students. In recent years, teams and clubs have grown to include the Gay Straight Alliance, Gardening Club, Muslim Student Association, Snack with the Rabbi, and Snowboarding Club offered to the current enrollment of 1,020 students. “It was an incredible experience being in a new school when everything started,” said Vernon Gilbert, Newtonbrook’s second principal and one of the original staff members. Gilbert, who was head of mathematics when the Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue school first opened, went on to serve as the school’s vice-principal from 1966 to 1967 before taking on the role of principal from 1967 to 1969. Under Gilbert’s watch, 44 teachers were hired in one year, a new music room was constructed, the library was expanded and labs
50-YEAR ANNIVERSARY MAY 24 ◗ open house 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. ◗ alumni pub night 7 to 11 p.m. were added. Though Newtonbrook didn’t have an official dress code, some of the female students decided to design one, made up of a tartanlike skirt and blazer, he said, adding the look was short-lived when the end of ’60s arrived. He also got rid of ringing bells signalling class was over, except for the one starting school at 8:55 a.m. “Why have a bell when there is a clock in the room?” he asked. “It’s too noisy.” Gilbert, 86, went to the dinner held for Newtonbrook’s 25th anniversary reunion, and plans to stop by when the school celebrates its 50th anniversary Saturday, May 24, at 155 Hilda Ave. The Newtonbrook Turns 50 Reunion will be divided in two parts. The first will be an open house from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., complete with decade rooms, entertainment, art, an ice cream truck, a sculpture unveiling, and the chance to catch up with old friends and teachers. Later that evening, a pub night will be held inside the school for alumni only from 7 to 11 p.m. The event will be catered by Golden Star Burgers, and The Henchmen, a school band from ’64, will provide entertainment. Drink tickets cost $15 each and must be purchased from the school in advance. Tickets will not be available at the door. “I have fond memories of the school, I really do,” said Gilbert, who donated memorabilia for the open house such as photos of the interior before the school opened, adding he plans to attend the pub night. Principal Lynne Koffman said she thinks it will be fun for past students and alumni to visit the school and reunite with past chums. “I’m looking forward to seeing
people come back, smiling with good memories, catching up with people they haven’t seen in a long time,” she said. “I encourage the community to come and join us and share their stories and memories with us.” Though she’s been retired from teaching for seven years, Cheryl Rosenthal still keeps in touch with many of her former students. But she’s looking forward to seeing those she hasn’t laid eyes on in a while. “I think it will be a lot of fun if some of my other kids show up,” said the former computer, accounting, law and civics teacher. Rosenthal, who started teaching at Newtonbrook in 1971, took a break from ’75 to ’88 to have a family before retiring in 2007, established the Cheryl Rosenthal Award for law students. The award, which started when she retired, hands out $100 to the students who achieved the highest marks in grades 11 and 12 law. Sally Loates was one of the original students when Newtonbrook opened in ’64. “I can’t believe it’s been 50 years,” she said. “We always think forever young.” Loates, co-chair of the reunion, said she thinks the day will be filled with non-stop talking. “People make their own fun,” she said. “I think the reunion will be huge.” Three hundred pub night tickets out of a maximum 500 have already been sold, she said. She’s kept in touch with former classmates over the years through The Founder’s Club, which is made up of graduates from the first three years, who have been meeting for at least 25 years.

Loates, who went on to become a teacher and taught at several North York schools including Hillmount Public School, Ranchdale Public School and Steelesview Public School before retiring, shared one funny moment from the initial Canada flag raising ceremony at the school on Feb. 15, 1965 to commemorate the inaugu-
ration of the flag of Canada. “The Student Council president was raising the flag and we noticed it was upside down,” she recalled. “It didn’t get far up before it was fixed.”

and Adelaide bike lanes wRichmond A plan to install separated bike lanes on both Richmond and Adelaide streets could be approved as early as May, says the city’s head of transportation services. Stephen Buckley confirmed this week a report on the feasibility of the project will be ready for May. If approval is given, construction on the unidirectional lanes could start in the summer. For the pilot, the city is considering painted lanes, short curbs or poles known as bollards to separate cars from cycle traffic.

Students from the University of Toronto are calling for better transit in an effort reduce excessive commute times in the GTA. Information released by the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance indicates 68 per cent of firstyear U of T students rely on transit to get to campus. A quarter of those students average 16 hours per week on their commutes, well above the regional average of nearly seven hours, which itself is one of the highest totals in North America. Last week, at a debate at the university co-hosted by CivicAction, students shared tales of long commutes and called on all major provincial parties to make improving transit a central objective of reducing traffic congestion.

On the roads: Gardiner work set to begin later this month Rahul Gupta rgupta@insidetoronto.com Separate construction projects are scheduled to commence at various locations along the Gardiner Expressway this month. The repair work, which is part of a decade-long rehabilitation of the crumbling expressway to cost the city around $500 million, will result in lane closures and traffic headaches for motorists, said public works chair Denzil Minnan-Wong. “We’re hopeful we can have some remedies to make traffic smoother, such as putting signs up and things like that, but really it’s a capacity problem,” said Minnan-Wong Monday during an announcement of the city’s road

the year. Because the Gardiner work will be disruptive, the city’s head of transportation services Stephen Buckley said efforts would be made to accelerate the pace of the repairs, by asking construction crews to work for 12 hours a day for six days a week. “We know these projects will require lanes taken out for weeks on end, so we’re looking for innovative ways to accelerate the work,” said Buckley.
cated for repairs the city is still facing a backlog in work, which Minnan-Wong attributed to a lack of funding. He said he was planning to introduce a motion at the public works and infrastructure committee meeting yesterday to review road work performance and see how to speed up the work to save construction costs and minimize impacts on road users. “We need to take a proactive approach to road repair by looking at modern technologies, remedies and solutions so that these issues don’t appear as often,” he said. “It’s only going to get worse, I think we’ve got to look at new approaches that are offered in other places and cities.”

On average the city fills 200,000 potholes per year. This year, 125,000 potholes have been repaired already, and Minnan-Wong said the city is estimating there are double the amount of repairs required compared to 2013. “We’ve got 35 to 40 work crews working extra hours to respond to the difficult year we’ve had,” he said.

Victim services offer support and awareness Teens Ending Abusive Relationships works to stop abuse before it begins Cynthia Reason creason@insidetoronto.com With National Victims of Crime Awareness Week being this week, The Mirror recently spoke with Victim Services Toronto (VST), the organization Toronto police most often turn to when dealing with traumatized victims in the immediate aftermath of crisis situations. Every year, the communitybased charity sends its highly trained crisis counsellors to help close to 20,000 victims of crime and their families cope in the wake of tragedy – be it shootings, stabbings, sexual assaults, incidents of domestic abuse or other traumatic situations. “It’s a mobile service. We’ll go out anywhere in the city – hospitals, police stations, people’s homes, or wherever else people are needing our assistance,” said VST executive director Bonnie Levine, noting that all 17 police divi-
sions, as well as the Toronto Police Homicide and Sex Assault squads, refer her staff to such situations. V S T ’s V i c t i m C r i s i s Response Program – which can be accessed 24/7 by calling the Victim Support Line at 416-808-7066 – provides short-term crisis intervention to ensure the victim is safe, emotionally stabilized and connected to the appropriate support services. “We’re there to provide some emotional grounding, but also to address a lot of the practical needs, from retrieving a traumatized child’s teddy bear from a wrecked car at the scene of a collision, to getting in contact with a victim’s family members and natural supports, and just arranging for food, clothing and shelter,” Levine said. For longer-term support, VST offers the Victim Quick Response Program, which provides one to three months of intensive case manage-

ment for victims in need of continuing emotional support, practical assistance and advocacy. It also provides limited financial assistance towards the cost of funerals, counselling and emergency expenses. For those victims who continue to be at a high-risk of re-victimization – most often women coming out of
abusive relationships – VST offers the High Risk Support Services. Through that program, VST staff work with victims and their families to create comprehensive safety plans, and, if they meet the criteria, supply them with 911-linked cellphones in case of emer-
gency. Lastly, to help prevent those types of situations from ever occurring, VST runs the Teens Ending Abusive Relationships (TEAR) program. “It’s part of a social work mantra that you can’t just work on the back-end of tragedy, you have a responsibility
to help prevent it in the first place, Levine said, noting that, of the 20,000 victims VST serves each year, 75 per cent of them are victims of domestic violence. “Through TEAR, we deliver a very, very powerful workshop reaching 10,000 students across the city each year. What we teach, for teenagers, is as essential as ‘look both ways before you cross the street’ is for toddlers. Kids are getting into relationships and they really need to know what a good relationship is, what a bad relationship is, and how to get help if they’re in an abusive one.” Since launching TEAR, VST has recruited a team of youth leaders who have not only redesigned the workshops to pack a more powerful punch, but have initiated the highly successful #TEARTalk on Twitter every Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Union Pearson Express Electrification Environmental Assessment NOTICE OF COMPLETION Environmental Project Report THE PROJECT Metrolinx has completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the Union Pearson (UP) Express Electrification project. Metrolinx is proposing to electrify the UP Express service beginning at the future UP Express Union Station in the City of Toronto and terminating at the future UP Express Pearson Station (at Terminal 1, Toronto Pearson International Airport) in the City of Mississauga. The project involves the electrification of approximately 25 kilometres of track along the Union Station GO Rail Corridor and Kitchener GO Rail Corridor to Highway 427, where the route then follows the new UP Express spur line (under construction) into Pearson Airport (see key map below). The purpose of the project is to convert the UP Express service from diesel to electric power, which will be achieved through a Traction Electrification System that will provide electrical power to the trains by means of a power distribution system. An Overhead Contact System (wiring system) will be suspended from a number of support structures (i.e. portals, cantilevers) placed along and over the track. Two paralleling stations and a new maintenance facility are also required. In addition, a separate Environmental Assessment study is being carried out by Hydro One for the proposed Traction Power Substation, in accordance with the Class EA for Minor Transmission Facilities. Electrification of the UP Express is part of The Big Move, Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan, which will dramatically improve how people move in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Funding for electrification is dependent on the Metrolinx Investment Strategy. THE PROCESS The environmental impact of this transit project was assessed and an Environmental Project Report prepared in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings. And while they are enjoying a busy lifestyle today, they appreciate the peace of mind in knowing that Chartwell offers flexibility and choice to help with changing care needs in the future. Until that time, they’ll continue to follow where the music leads in their new Chartwell home.
Join us for a special treat, how to make maple syrup. The portable maple sugar shack will be stopping in at the Gibson to show us how maple syrup is really made, and of course we will get to taste the delicious syrup after the demonstration.

The private-sector operator of newly christened Bike Share Toronto is promising better availability of vehicles and more reliable customer service for the coming year. Alta Bicycle Share, which is now running the bike sharing program’s day-to-day operations, revealed the new moniker and logo last week, which officially replaces the original BIXI moniker. The new entity, which will answer to the Toronto Parking Authority (TPA), will continue to offer short term bike rentals at the former BIXI station locations. It has already
launched its annual membership drive and as an incentive is offering lower rates and shorter terms in an effort to attract more subscribers. Improving service will remain the immediate objective of Bike Share Toronto, said the service’s new general manager Scott Hancock. But he cautioned against hoping for wholesale expansion of the bike share program which currently has less than 100 stations in the downtown core, but none north of Bloor Street. “Improving what’s in front of us has to be the focus,” said Hancock during an interview March 31, one day before the service officially launched.
Alta was approached last year to take over the bike share program after former operator PBSC warned it was unable to finance BIXI’s dayto-day operations and in danger of defaulting on a loan of almost $4 million guaranteed by the city. The program was saved after street furniture supplier Astral Media agreed to re-allocate $5 million from its contract with the city. Bike Share Toronto is also planning a small expansion to 102 bike stations this year, to be funded by section 37 funds provided by developers for street improvements.

Mayor Rob Ford’s political wounds entirely self-inflicted
M
ayor Rob Ford sought to set the tone early on in the 2014 mayoral race, when he predicted it would be a “blood bath.” That’s a crude metaphor for what this very Canadian race is turning into. In these early months, it seems that candidates for the top job are struggling to put as kind and civil a face on the proceedings as they can. It is almost wellmannered. Opponents of Ford have, it’s true, called out the mayor on his bad behaviour and other obvious shortcomings — but it seemed like they had to be goaded into doing so after a notable lack of carnage in the first, televised mayoral debate. Most of the real bloodletting has come from the sidelines: those ‘No Ford Nation’ Rob Ford parody signs showing up on streets around the city, or that independently produced YouTube attack ad on John Tory, drawing ties between him and the Fords, reminding women voters of his advice on golf and success in business, and his well-
david nickle the city compensated work with Rogers. From the candidates themselves, the aggression remains generally passive. Last week, Tory emerged with a code of conduct he’d follow as mayor – pledging to show up on time, not make enemies’ lists, not consort with criminals and obey the law – which, if boiled down, amounts to a sniping assertion to behave nothing like Ford. Olivia Chow, meanwhile, has stuck to the line that the mayor’s a bad example for her grandchildren, then gone on to talk about child care, housing, business taxes, and public transit. Karen Stintz largely avoids the issue, and David Soknacki favours a lighter-touch version of those clever street-sign and YouTube snipes, combined with more direct questioning of the way in which the mayor’s using his office resources during the election period. One could almost antici-
pate a relatively genteel run up to the Oct. 27 election, were it not for the fact that all this messy characterbased stuff keeps coming up. On the weekend, Ford took budget chief Frank Di Giorgio on a very bad boy’s night out at the Air Canada Centre. While there, the mayor threw a tantrum, fell into what sounds like a selfie-driven mosh pit of fans, and ditched poor Di Giorgio for a taxi full of revelers and a night on the town. Di Giorgio was left to mope off to his ward, where a small gathering of constituents were waiting for a visit from their mayor. At the end of it, even Di Giorgio – among the last of Ford’s supporters on council – admitted he had to rethink his loyalties. If the mayor keeps this kind of behaviour up, his prediction will come true, but not as he thinks. Whatever ‘blood bath’ comes of it, the wounds will be the mayor’s and they’ll be entirely self-inflicted.

Council approves loan to Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment for BMO field refurbishing David Nickle dnickle@insidetoronto.com To r o n t o C o u n c i l h a s approved a plan to loan Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment $10 million to refurbish the BMO Field at Exhibition Place. The city-owned field is currently leased to MLSE, and used for Toronto FC, Toronto’s professional soccer team. It is expected to one day be home to the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts and will be used for Pan Am Games events in 2015. The deal will see MLSE’s lease extended for a decade, and will finance improvements to the stadium – adding a partial roof to cover spectator seats and increas-
ing the seating from 21,566 to 30,000. In the end, MLSE will repay the loan with interest, returning $14 million to the city. Only three members of council voted against the plan – Mayor Rob Ford and his brother city councillor Doug Ford, and ScarboroughAgincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande. Del Grande was the only of the three able to speak before council decided to simply call the question. “I guess the average person who is faced with eight per cent water increase, 30 per cent hydro increase, 40 per cent stamp increase...and on and on and on...we turn around here, we say we don’t have any money to do all kinds of things but we’re
going to invest this in our own facility, it’s difficult for the average person to understand that,” said Del Grande. On Wednesday, Mayor Ford told repor ters he regarded the deal as “corporate welfare.” City manager Joe Pennachetti, however, said the deal was a good one for the city. “They’re coming in with an offer to enhance our asset. So I believe that while there may be a lucrative business that they’re in, the city is garnering the same benefits if not more in terms of a return to the taxpayers of Toronto,” said Pennachetti.
