The suspect is described as 30 to 40 years old, 5’8, with a medium build and clean shaven.

He was last seen wearing a red baseball hat, a grey hoodie and was carrying a backpack.

Police seized a loaded firearm while patrolling the Jane Street and Falstaff Avenue area Saturday.

Police were investigating a group of five men in a stairwell when one fled around 9:45 p.m.

When officers caught up with the man on foot, they allegedly seized a loaded Smith and Wesson semi-automatic firearm tucked in the man’s pants.

The man, in his 20s, faces six gun related charges.

Police are withholding the man’s name due to an ongoing investigation.

Humber River Hospital receives $10-million boost from Apotex FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Humber River Hospital (HRH) is closer to its $225-million fundraising goal to build North America’s first fully digital hospital thanks to a $10 million donation from Apotex Inc. The multi-million dollar gift was announced last Thursday at the site of the new hospital at Keele Street and Wilson Avenue, which is under construction and expected to open in the fall of 2015.

The donation by Apotex, the largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company, will be spread out over 10 years in support of HRH Foundation’s capital campaign.

In recognition of the gift, the new hospital’s emergency department will be named Apotex Emergency Centre.

The emergency department is expected to see more than 114,000 visits in the first year.

“My relationship with this hospital goes back more than 30 years,” said Jack Kay, CEO of Apotex Inc. and past HRH board chair. “My two youngest sons were born at the Finch site. Later, our involvement grew with our partnership evolving in many stages over the years.”

Kay encouraged other companies to follow in Apotex Inc.’s footsteps, noting they can’t go wrong by giving back to what’s important to Canadians - affordable health care.

Reuben Devlin, president and CEO of HRH, promised to repay Apotex Inc.’s investment by providing top notch care to patients.

“The partnership between hospital and corporate citizen is stronger today than at any other point in Humber’s past...the new building will stand as a testament to those who stood beside us as we looked to the future,” he said.

“It’s an investment I think this community deserves,” she said. “Government can’t do this alone. We can do it only if people like Jack Kay step up and say, ‘I want to be part of the future of health care.’”

Local history: why it matters

oronto’s history – and that of its neighbourhoods – matters to all of us.

It’s why an ongoing campaign by the City of Toronto Historic Sites is worth paying attention to.

Called WTF? (What the Fact?), the cheeky campaign is an attempt to spur interest in local history, particularly among the younger generation.

Until the middle of next month, 100 TTC bus shelters across the city are displaying close-up shots of an unknown artifact found in one of the city’s 10 museums, including North York’s Gibson House and the Historic Zion Schoolhouse. People are invited to post guesses on the object’s identity through social media. The submission deadline is Sept. 9.

We’re intrigued about what the campaign will yield. Anything that generates interest in and knowledge of a community’s history is positive. our view By knowing more about our communities, we establish Establish closer closer connections to them.

If we establish those conneccommunity tions to how our communities connections evolved, we gain a greater understanding and appreciation of what we have – and by extension what we want our communities to be. The potential for fostering greater civic pride and citizen engagement is enormous.

In a time when change is seemingly a constant in our communities, it’s vital we maintain those connections to our past.

Significant change in a community’s makeup can happen in a short period of time. Like each of its 140 neighbourhoods, Toronto is evolving.

For example, while the city’s population continues to grow (2.615 million at the last census count), recent census data suggests Toronto’s also getting older. According to census data, the city’s count of those aged 0-14 has actually dropped by more than 30,000 between 2001 and 2011, while the number of seniors (those aged 65 and above), has increased by more than 40,000.

And that’s just the last 10 years. Toronto is more than 175 years old. There’s lots for us to delve into.

So we urge you to check out WTF?. Test your knowledge. Maybe you’ll come away with something you didn’t know about your own community.

Balanced view on outsourcing Re: ‘Outsourcing not an obvious solution,’ Beyond the Headlines, Aug. 8 The thinking exhibited in his column was quite balanced.

There are other questions too: Does “managed competition” have the potential to keep large, multi-national companies from unduly exploiting the citizens of Toronto when it comes to garbage collection?

Would we be in a better position to know the real costs of garbage collection if we were to maintain an area of the city where our own employees collect our garbage? How will we know the true costs of totally ‘outsourcing’ garbage collection?

I hope that the decision makers are not blinded by an ideological commitment to what might seem like an easy decision. This could end up costing us much more than we could anticipate.

oeiva Collins is looking forward to making new friends and learning new skills as part of a free soccer program organized by Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) Foundation.

The 12-year-old took part in KickStart last year, the first time the program was offered, and is eager to get back on the playing field.

“It’s fun, you get to exercise,” said the Islington and Finch avenues area resident, adding he hones his skills with his dad and brother and also plays on a rep team.

The MLSE Foundation, in partnership with Kia Canada Inc., launched the second year of KickStart, a free eight-week soccer program in 12 Toronto Community Housing communities, Wednesday, Aug. 21 at the Kia training ground at Downsview Park. The program is set to start this week.

The program, open to youths aged six to 12, aims to build soccer skills, selfesteem, fair play and leadership in the 240 youngsters taking part this year.

Toronto FC was on hand to run drills and offer advice to the budding soccer stars, something Goeiva saw as inspirational.

“It gives us encouragement,” he said of seeing professional soccer players at the event, adding he’d like to play for Toronto FC down the road.

Last year, 10 Toronto Community Housing communities were involved with KickStart, and this year

two more communities have been added. Coaches from the communities were trained by professional soccer players, and the idea is to run KickStart in each community for eight weeks.

Two practices are held each week, along with one game on Saturdays. Games are played at Amesbury Park at Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue in the west end, and at Birchmount Park near Kingston and Birchmount

Continuously expanding the program is something Eugene Jones hopes to see in coming years.

“MLSE Foundation approached us with this wonderful opportunity,” said Jones, president and CEO of Toronto Community Housing. “It focuses on education, team work, friendship, camaraderie. I don’t want it to stop. I want it to be an everlasting program. We have 350 Toronto Community Housing communities and 12 are here. I hope to expand it to include all of them.”

“We built up a nice relationship with Toronto Community Housing,” he said. “Soccer is one of those games where it takes a ball, that’s it.”

“It’s breaking down barriers,” he said. “It’s bringing different communities together. They are learning a different sport they wouldn’t normally play. Usually they play basketball. Having

Toronto FC player Jeremy Hall, who co-spearheaded KickStart from the players side, said the program encourages kids to stay active.

“When I was this age, my mom signed me up (for soccer),” said Hall, who

grew up in Tampa, Florida.

“You are running around and staying healthy. If I’m here next year I would love to do this again, I think it’s great.”

Half of the performance is similar to stand up comedy, where the performer might talk about his personal life, what’s happening in the news, or pop culture topics. The second half Saturday is dedicated to the telling of the stories approved by the master, whereby the performer plays several different roles, switching his head from left to right and changing the pitch in tone.

Sunshine’s road to professional rakugo storytelling – there are more than 700 professional storytellers in Japan today – started in 2008, when he began his apprenticeship under Japanese storyteller Bunshi VI. Masters give apprentices their storyteller name, which consists in part of the master’s name.

The goal of the tour is to bring rakugo to North America, and to familiarize audiences with the comedic humour of Katsura Bunshi VI, who has penned more than 230 original rakugo stories, two of which Sunshine has translated into English just for this tour. Sunshine worked as Bunshi VI’s apprentice for four years before his master gave permission for the Canadian to work as a professional rakugo storyteller.

“One of the first drivers of any good international commercial relationship is an understanding between the parties – an understanding that often springs from shared cultural experiences,” Wilf Wakely, chair of the Canadian Chamber of

Depending on the master, the apprentice may not drink, smoke, or go on dates, and is subject to a strict curfew during the apprenticeship period. The apprentice cleans the master’s house, does laundry, cooking, preparing and folding kimonos, and other chores, and learns the art of storytelling by watching the master perform and through imitation. Throughout one’s career, a storyteller is only allowed to perform a given story once permission to do that story has been granted by a master storyteller.

resident playwright/composer of Theatre Cotton Robes. Last year, he opened his own rakugo theatre in Ise, Japan, called Ise Kawasaki Kikitei. He also appears regularly on television and radio in Japan and writes a monthly newspaper column.

For his North American tour, Sunshine will be doing something out of the ordinary – he will be performing in English.

“In Japan I do the shows in Japanese,” he said. “Anyone who has done shows abroad go in with the attitude of adapting for a North American audience. I just did a show in Seattle, and it didn’t go quite as well as I expected. Then I brought the translation as close as possible to Japanese storytelling and suddenly (the audience) were rolling in the aisles. It was a huge revelation. Instead of adapting, just roll with the 400-year-old tradition. The shows are really easy to grasp and understand, and you’ll laugh for a couple hours.”

Proposed uniform colours strike a nerve Controversy erupted last week when TTC workers rejected a proposed uniform re-design resembling the colours of the Montreal Canadiens.

The outcry was so much it led TTC CEO Andy Byford to say in a statement that a posted picture of a blue, red and white striped golf shirt was only a “proposal” and no final choice has been made.

Byford said he preferred a “predominantly” blue uniform, a colour deeply associated with the Canadiens’ arch-rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Whatever the design, TTC workers are scheduled to wear the new duds beginning in 2014.

A petition is calling for separated bi-directional bike lanes on Harbord Street and Hoskin Avenue.

There are currently painted lanes on both sides of Harbord, which turns into Hoskin east of St. George Street, but the Cycle TO petition seeks fully separated lanes, which it says will encourage more riders and reduce fatalities.

So far, 146 people have signed the petition, but some commenters warn separated bi-directional bike lanes are dangerous since they are too constrained to evade collisions.

The city plans to install separated bike lanes on Harbord-Hoskin in 2014.
