Set up like a retail store, the service is used by more than 8,500 people a year. New Circles is working with Lifeline Syria and other agencies to provide Syrian refugees with clothes for up to two years, and is asking community members to join in and assist its effort. “With so many initiatives taking place across the city, we are in a unique position to provide extended support to help families meet this particular need,” said Alykhan Suleman, executive director of New Circles. “We have lots of capacity to sort and distribute clothing, a great team of volunteers and >>>WINTER, page 17

Lucky duo will have compositions played by renowned Gryphon Trio Carol Mak’s jaw dropped when the Earl Haig Secondary School student was told her composition would be one of two performed by Gryphon Trio. Mak, a grade 12 student who is enrolled at the Claude Watson School for the Arts program at Earl Haig, will have her composition, titled Com-pulse, performed by the famed Canadian piano trio Thursday, Dec. 10 during their Music Toronto concert at Jane Mallett Theatre downtown as part of the group’s Young Composers Project at the high school. Initiated by Gryphon Trio in 1996, the program at the Claude Watson arts program at Earl Haig provides mentorship to Grade 11 music students as they create original works for the trio over the course of a semester, with one to two student works chosen by the group to perform the following year. To date, the program has produced more than 400 short works for the group. “It was very scary at first,” Mak said of recording Com-pulse. “I was nervous how it would sound to other people. “I was really happy when they chose mine, and I’m really excited

Violin major Christina Chang said she was “pleasantly surprised” her composition, Unhinged, was one of the two chosen by Gryphon Trio to perform. “I’m nervous and excited,” she said of the impending performance. “I’ve never had anything like this happen before.” She was going for a gypsy-like

The program used to be offered to grade 12 students, but for the past eight years has switched to Grade 11, he said. “They could do just as good of a job as Grade 12 students,” Torok said. Twenty-five to 30 Grade 11 students have their compositions critiqued by Gryphon Trio, with two selected to be performed, he said. “It gives depth to a musical experience most professional music students don’t get,” he said of the Young Composers Project.

Dec. 18, will see 19 families receive the goods via 33 Division police station. “Last year was pretty successful,” said student Mike Ge. “This year we were looking to hype it up.” Each home form class at the Leslie Street and Steeles Avenue school will collect items to make up the hampers, which will be picked up Friday, Dec. 18 by 33 Division officers, who in turn will distribute

them to families in need over the holidays, Ge said. Boyd Bugden, principal of A.Y. Jackson, said the Holiday Hamper Drive is a spin on a similar program the school once held. “Last year I was quite surprised how well it was received,” he said. “We are not looking for a thank you.” In addition to the Holiday Hamper Drive, students also raise funds for

the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, having donated thousands of dollars for the cause, Bugden said. ‘Twice a year’ “We wanted to do something twice a year where the students are giving back,” he said. “Now they know it’s not a matter of if we’re going to do it, but when. They look forward to it.”

Dufferin Finch BIA is getting a makeover. In a bid to reinvent itself as a viable area of economic growth, which will include new subway stations, a new GO train station, and Finch LRT stops, the business improvement area (BIA) which was formed in 2014 has been renamed Duke Heights BIA. “The members wanted to do something new,” said Matias de Dovitiis, executive director of Duke Heights BIA. “The area has been forgotten, and now all these great investments are going ahead. We are now a hub.” An official launch of the rebranded BIA was held Monday, De c. 7 a t Be a part of the Champagne Centre in discussion. Duke Heights – the name is made up of the first two letters of Dufferin and Keele – represents more than 2,500 businesses and 30,000 employees and contains a plethora of new construction, including a stop along the future Finch LRT, stops along the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, York University, and Downsview Park. “The community doesn’t really know we are there,” de Dovitiis said. “(Re-branding) is our way of saying hello. We are trying to get people to look at our place anew. Property levy tax shows responsible financial planning

Write us

T

oronto has been in fiscal denial, off and on, since it was amalgamated in 1998. That was when Mel Lastman was elected mayor, promising to freeze property taxes for the first three years of the new mega-city. He pulled it off, but not in a fiscally responsible way. Rather than finding internal efficiencies and cutting services, most of the city’s financial problems were deferred down the line in the service of a tax freeze. When David Miller took over two terms later, the city and council did better, but it was a tooth-andnail fight to implement the land transfer tax and vehicle registration tax, which let council get away with more minor efficiencies and modest property tax increases thanks to a booming real estate market. Those taxes and a municipal workers strike sent Rob Ford into the mayor’s office and while that regime made some mostly unpalatable cuts, once again our view ambitious spending and timid revenue-seeking put Toronto back in the hole. Proposal the The early months of John first of new Tory’s time in the mayor’s seemed to continue revenue grabs office this unrealistic mash-up of promises of frugality with bigticket commitments. For a time, it looked as though the reconstruction of the Gardiner Expressway, SmartTrack, the Scarborough subway and countless other enhancements were going to bankrupt us all. That’s why we’re happy to see that Tory has effectively abandoned his promise to keep property tax increases at or below the rate of inflation. It’s not that we think higher taxes are a good idea. But the alternative – planning to build a city the size of Toronto on an unsustainable fiscal plan – is folly. Tory’s plan to charge a 0.5 per cent a year levy to build transit and housing is at least a step toward erasing that folly. The tax increase is relatively small: $13 a year for the average homeowner, for five years, on top of whatever inflationary increase they see on their tax bill. By itself, it is neither a great burden, nor the complete solution to Toronto’s needs. There will have to be more revenue grabs. But that’s for another day. For now, we can at least applaud that the days of denial seem to be done.

Mayor John Tory has defied early expectations when it comes to governing a complex Toronto John Tory can be a tough mayor to interview. That’s not to say that our mayor is evasive, or dishonest, or, like the last one to hold the job, openly hostile to journalistic prying. Tory is none of those things. The problem, rather, is the opposite: Tory thinks aloud, considering all points of view and in the end, states nearly all of them – in addition to agreeing with the premise of the question in case that hadn’t come up in one of the other answers. It can be frustrating work, trying to parse the mayor’s views from all that. A lead becomes a multiple choice question. From that, one might conclude that the mayor is simply unprincipled – and by a narrowly political definition of the word, that might be so. Tory does not hold fast with the principles of one

david nickle the city faction or another of our political spectrum. He might have done so in the past. But now, Tory seems content to take his pick. This he has demonstrated ably over his first year in office. For a time, it seemed as though Tory might be of a piece with council’s right-wing intelligentsia: he championed a costly rebuild of the Gardiner Expressway favoured by Conservative members of council, and held fast on the costly Scarborough subway for which former mayor Rob Ford took credit. He has sung the praises of the private sector and made jokes about the folly of big government as well as any right-wing pol might be expected to.

But as the year has gone on, he’s defied those expectations. After talking with business leaders and sport boosters, he backed the city away from another Olympic bid. He used another meeting with the blue-blooded business crowd at the Economic Club of Canada to unveil plans for an annual tax hike to pay for a major round of construction and repair of public affordable housing and transit infrastructure. He flew to Paris right after that, to huddle with world leaders trying to find ways to battle, halt and possibly reverse climate change and when he came back, he announced plans to help Toronto recycle more garbage, consume less energy and get around on foot and on bicycles. This is not the sort of thing you’d have expected

from a guy named Tory. Now some of this might be written off as evidence of a shifting of the political winds. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals came to power on a wave of progressive policies and right-wing repudiation. I would buy that more easily if I hadn’t been exposed so early and often to the push-me-pull-you dynamic of Tory’s psyche. And while it’s a frustrating psyche to try and codify, it might actually turn out to be a healthy one when it comes to governing a big, complex place like Toronto, where public mood and social reality can shift in a heartbeat. Vision, clear and consistent and predictable, might well have had its day.

13th Annual

Beary Merry Christmas

Metroland Media Toronto is very proud to be the founder of the Beary Merry Christmas Campaign. For the 13th consecutive year, North York Mirror employees will deliver teddy bears to children spending the holidays in our local hospitals. We are so proud to have Samko & Miko as the official sponsor of this year’s teddy bears. As you can see, there are many other community minded businesses in the area that have generously purchased a bear for a needy child this season. We thank all of our partners for helping us put smiles on the faces of so many children this Holiday Season.

Councillor’s office received a dozen complaints about artwork >>>from page 1 Amesbury Community Centre, with the clear majority in favour of the artwork with no one publicly speaking out in opposition to it at the meeting. The 300-metre long mural was completed in mid-November. But shortly after the piece, which tells the story of global warming and the environment, was finished, Essencia Arts Collective received word from the city that Councillor Frank Di Giorgio’s office had gotten several complaints about the work, Bruxa, co-director of the art group, previously told The Mirror. The piece is made up of imagery of glaciers, deserts, forests, water, animals, and birds, along with magical scenes of human characters, tar sands, water and air pollution – all an ode to Mother Earth, the common theme in Essencia Arts Collective’s works, Bruxa said. Di Giorgio, who said his office received a dozen complaints about the mural, said

concerns focused on the west part of the piece, specifically images of a deer skull and a person wearing a gas mask. “The purpose of the meeting is to have constructive dialogue about the mural that exists in its current form,” he told the crowd. “There has been mixed reaction to the mural. I understand some people think it’s the best thing that’s ever happened in the area, and some people are not happy with some of the images and don’t believe it’s reflective of the community.” The artists, who call themselves visual storytellers, explained during the meeting the piece deals with climate change and the fossil fuel dependent generation, and how species will disappear due to society’s current lifestyle. They also said removing even one image would be detrimental to the entire piece. Gianfranco Baldin said it would be a shame to change the mural in any way. “The world is in bad shape and every community needs

creativity to show this message,” he said. “Art is to tell the truth, not please political agendas.” Rino Dellagnese, who lives behind the mural, said it’s something people should be embracing. “I can’t believe there are individuals who would condemn such a thing,” he said. “It’s ridiculous.” Di Giorgio said it’s now up to city staff to render a decision on the mural’s fate based on comments made during the meeting. “Based on the comments I heard, it will remain as is,” he said to thunderous applause. Speaking to media following the meeting, Di Giorgio said some worried the “startling” images on the west end of the mural might cause driving hazards, as motorists might be distracted by what they see. Paul Salvatori, who started an online petition last week in favour of the mural, said the response it has received has been overwhelming.

As of the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2,670 had signed the petition. “I wanted to make sure the mural wouldn’t get censored in any way,” he said of starting the petition. “(The mural) is a dream come true. It’s transformed an area that was grim to one that’s beautiful. I’m hugely surprised people took issue with it, it’s one of the best pieces of public art Toronto has seen. What’s problematic is we still don’t know who those people are. They said it’s ‘scary’, but didn’t provide any argument.” Randy McLean, manager of the city’s transportation services’ Beautiful Streets public realm section, told The Mirror it’s “pretty clear what the decision will be.” He added an official decision will likely be made by Dec. 18. “Despite the tension, that’s why public consultation is important to us. It brought the community together and it’s a positive thing to have happened.”

Toronto police have arrested a 34-year-old woman in connection with a distraction theft earlier this year in the Victoria Park and Lawrence avenues area that targeted a 96-year-old victim. According to police, the victim was walking in the area on Sept. 9 when she was approached by a woman driving a car who offered her some gold jewelry for sale. The victim was then driven to a bank to get money to buy the jewelry. The accused put the jewelry on the victim’s neck and then removed her

gold necklace, police alleged. The accused then fled after having stolen the victim’s necklace and selling her costume jewelr y, police alleged. On Dec, 6, police arrested a Toronto woman and charged her with theft under $5,000. Police believe there may be other victims of similar distraction thefts targeting seniors and their jewelry. Call police at 416-808-4100 or Crime Stoppers at 416-2228477.

pedestrian hit by minivan A female pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a minivan at Weston Road and Finch Avenue Monday, Dec. 7. Police said the woman, 36, was attempting to cross Finch Avenue when she was struck by an eastbound Toyota Sienna around 7:15 p.m. Anyone with information is asked to call Toronto Police Services at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477 or at https://222tips.com

The province is moving ahead, albeit slowly, on High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes. Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca announced this week the QEW between Guelph and Oakville beginning next summer will convert to HOT from the current HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes. The carpool lanes will still remain free to anyone traveling with at least one passenger, but single-occupant vehicles will also be able to legally use the lanes by purchasing a special permit. The pilot project is expected to pave the way for more HOT lanes on Ontario highways, but likely not until 2021. Road tolls advocacy group Transport Futures called it a start, but said the modest implementation plan might lead to “underwhelming results”. PLANNED SUBWAY CLOSURES by ttc wNO

There aren’t any more planned subway closures by the TTC until March.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT That will come as a great relief for riders, who have had to opt for shuttle buses while the TTC performed essential maintenance or construction work on selected weekends. Such closures have become the norm while the TTC continues to re-signal much of the subway network, so expect frequent weekend closures to resume following the break. REJECTS LRT NAME REQUESTS wMETROLINX

Competing requests to rename an Eglinton Crosstown stop in Scarborough were turned down by Metrolinx, the provincial agency in charge of building the light-rail line along Eglinton Avenue. Metrolinx rejected a request by members of the TTC board to rename the Lebovic Avenue stop in honour of Karim Hakimi, the founder of Hakim Optical. The only problem is an existing naming policy

preventing the naming of infrastructure after living persons, and Hakimi is still going strong at 82. Metrolinx also turned down a request from Centennial College to rename the Lebovic stop after the college’s Ashtonbee campus on the basis it’s not directly located on Eglinton. WI-FI available AT SUBWAY STATIONS wMORE

You can now get free Wi-Fi access at four more subway stations, the TTC announced last week. The TCONNECT service is now available at Christie, Bathurst, Sherbourne and Castle Frank stations. These join the stations located on the lower U portion of the subway line. BAI Canada, which is carrying out the Wi-Fi installation, has pledged to connect every TTC station by 2017. Inter-faith gathering stands in unity with Muslims All urged to sign statement of unity celebrating nation’s diversity EMANUELA CAMPANELLA nym@insidetoronto.com More than 200 people from different faiths gathered at a Toronto mosque Saturday to show their solidarity against anti-Muslim sentiments. After the Nov. 13 Paris terror attacks that killed 129 people and left hundreds wounded, there were a few hate crimes targeting Muslims. On Nov. 16, two men physically attacked a woman wearing a hijab while hurling racial slurs when she was picking up her children from school in North York. And on Nov. 19, anti-Muslim graffiti with the message, “F*** Muslim girl”, was found on a GO Transit train at Sherbourne Station. On Nov. 14, a mosque was deliberately set on fire in Peterborough. To respond to the increase in hate crimes, Toronto faith leaders and politicians came together to speak

out against such acts and stand together with the Muslim community at the Islamic Info and Dawah Centre at Bloor and Dufferin. The event was hosted by Faith in the City, an antipoverty organization aimed at strengthening community voices against intolerance in Toronto. Men wearing kippahs and thwabs, religious garments, spoke with one another while women in hijabs spoke to women wearing crosses around their necks. “There’s so much craziness and madness going on in the world around us,” said Ilyas Ally, a member of the mosque and event organizer. “We’re constantly going from one incident to the next and sometimes it’s beyond our borders, but then sometimes it has ripple effects right here in our city,” Ally said. “And so with all of that negativity, it’s so nice that we have a

positive event like this where all of us can come together and hopefully learn from each other and re-commit to working together for a better society.” The leader of the mosque, Imam Shabir Ally, also spoke to the crowd, asking all Muslims to denounce the recent terror attacks around the world and

make it loud and clear that the violence has nothing to do with Islam. “They (terrorists) have misappropriated some of the teachings of the Qur’an. They have misconstrued this and are using it for their own political and other objectives,” he said. “We think they are mis-

guided and it is the responsibility of persons like myself, who are studying the Qur’an and Islamic history, to help those young men and women to see where they are misguided and bring them back to the right path,” he added. With rabbis, pastors, imams and politicians speaking to the crowd, the message of the night was clear: everyone stands united against hate crimes. “Any type of anti-Muslim sentiment, any type of hate crime, any type of discrimination is completely unacceptable. Not only in this community, but all communities right across Canada,” Davenport MP Julie Dzerowicz said. “I truly believe from the bottom of my heart that Canadians are united in our shared values, in our commitment to freedom and to equality. And we know that our diversity and multiculturalism only enhances and enriches our country.” A statement of unity, pledging the community will stand

together to show its solidarity, was printed on a board. Community members were asked to sign both in print and online. All Toronto councillors pledged to sign as well. “We have in such a small space, such a vibrant community with so many cultures, so many religions,” said Davenport Councillor Ana Bailao. “And as we make these statements in light of these horrible attacks that we had in our city and in our country, we have to make them loud and clear…. We are a better country because we are so diverse...”

‘In shock’ at Rhodes Scholarship confirmation fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

to 11 Canadian students and 89 worldwide for postgraduate studies up to three years at Oxford University, when he got the congratulatory call several hours later regarding his admission. “I burst into tears,” Hawa said of his reaction to the news. A student at the University of Toronto, Hawa is currently studying global health and international relations. At the encouragement of several professors, Hawa applied for the Rhodes Scholarship in October. He has until Jan. 1, 2016 to decide what he wants to

Kaleem Hawa was in the car with his father when he got the call confirming his acceptance as a Rhodes Scholar. “I was in shock,” said the Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue area resident. “I thought they were calling to confirm details or something. I thought no way did they make their decision so quickly.” Hawa had just finished up an interview Nov. 21 for the prestigious scholarship, which is awarded each year

study at Oxford come next fall, and is looking into different masters programs, with a focus on public policy. Hard work Born in Edmonton, Alberta to parents of Lebanese descent who came to Canada as refugees fleeing civil war, Hawa witnessed first-hand the hard work and determination it takes to succeed. His parents worked odds and ends jobs while pursuing an education, with his dad, Raed, becoming a psychiatrist and his mom, Roula, earning her PhD and working

as a high school teacher. “I look at the challenges I face as a student and realize the magnitude pales in comparison to what they went through,” Hawa said of his parents. “It pushes you to be extremely grateful and not squander opportunity. I’m extremely thankful to the Rhodes Trust for offering me the (scholarship) and I intend to make them (parents) proud.” Hawa is one of 30 Rhodes Scholars who participated in a month-long SHAD program, which is offered to more than 600 students worldwide to attend a

summer program hosted at a Canadian university with a focus on science, technology, engineering, and math. Hawa attended the program in Laval, Quebec after finishing grade 11, and is one of three SHAD Fellows who were named as Rhodes Scholars this year. The others are James Flynn of St. John’s Newfoundland, and Zia Saleh of Edmonton, Alberta. “It is great to see SHAD Fellows recognized with prestigious global awards and becoming Rhodes Scholars,” Barry Bisson, president of SHAD, said in an email to The Mirror.
