Today, Stella Leowinata’s sister, Jacqueline Sugianto, has followed in her older sibling’s dancing shoes, landing the same leading role for this year’s production of the holiday favourite.

“It’s so cool,” Jacqueline, 11, said of performing the same role as her sister, who was the same age when she was cast as Marie. “There is one picture where we are doing the same pose. She’s given me advice and helped with some steps.”

While Leowinata has graduated from the National Ballet School of Canada and is currently pursing a bachelor of arts degree in dance and performance in England, Jacqueline is just getting started with the downtown ballet school, which boasts graduates such as Karen Kain, Rex Harrington, Veronica Tennant and The Nutcracker choreographer James Kudelka.

Police services board tackles carding issue MIKE ADLER

madler@insidetoronto.com A Toronto police division commander is defending his officers against suggestions that many use a form of “racial profiling” when stopping and questioning people in the Jane-Finch area.

Members of 31 Division are committed to “professional and respectful” service “consistent with human decency,” Tony Riviere, their superintendent since January, told the Dec. 15 Toronto Police Services Board meeting.

The board in April changed a city-wide policy on questioning suspicious persons – known as “carding” – requiring officers to have a “public safety” reason for such stops

and to issue receipts afterward.

A survey done in 31 Division neighbourhoods this summer indicated most people carded felt the police had no reason to stop them and got no receipt, while many also felt intimidated during what should be a voluntary encounter.

Police Chief Bill Blair had promised to discuss the survey report, which he previously called an inaccurate piece of “advocacy,” at the board, but instead called on Riviere to provide “valuable context” about policing in 31 Division.

But Duncan said he firmly believes carding will not accomplish that goal, and that the practice must stop.

“It erodes the community trust,” he said.

Ford family makes financial gift to Humber River The new Humber River Hospital (HRH) got a $90,000 boost yesterday thanks to the family of former mayor Rob Ford.

Former Etobicoke councillor Doug Ford and his mother, Dianne Ford, presented two cheques to the hospital at the construction site of where Canada’s first digital hospital will be located at Keele Street and Wilson Avenue.

The first cheque, for $40,000, was from proceeds from the sale of five versions of Rob Ford bobble heads. The second cheque, for $50,000, was a personal donation from the Ford family.

et’s make next year a banner year in Toronto for volunteering in the community.

With 2015 almost upon us, it seems like a good time to issue this call. There’s still a little bit left in 2014 to ponder goals and expectations for the coming year – and perhaps include some time to give to a cause or organization of importance to you.

Also, 2015 is a big year in Toronto. The Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games are coming to the city in July. It’s Canada’s largest multi-sport event. There are opportunities both before and during the Games, which will rely on some 23,000 volunteers to ensure things run smoothly. Visit the Pan Am Games website for more information.

And Toronto is a city known for its diverse offerings of festivals and events.

Volunteer opportunities represent more than just a chance to get involved in your community and help out. In many cases, volunteers acquire new skills and contacts during the course of their work.

Volunteers acquire intangible benefits, too: a richer experience of life in the city and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts are helping your community.

When we think about what kind of environment we want to live in, what improvements we want in our neighbourhoods and what connections we want to forge in our community, volunteering helps in all of those areas.

William Osler Health Centre recently honoured seven of its volunteers who had compiled a staggering 50 years each of volunteering with its hospitals, including Etobicoke General.

Let’s see what we can do in one year. Calls for volunteering – the ultimate commitment to our community – are all around us.

Before we begin, if it was your day off, please kindly abstain from voting.

And for those who get nervous before quizzes, not to worry. it’s an open book test. So if you can’t remember if you were late or not and have to consult a time tracker, or the company security system if you don’t have access to a time tracker, feel free to do so.

I’ll wait. ... Later that day.

OK. Looks like everybody’s good to go, so let’s proceed: 1,2,3.

Wow. That’s quite a large group. Even bigger than I had anticipated.

Moving right along, on to question number two.

Of those who were late, how many told their boss it couldn’t be helped given that the weather was so bad?

Now for the analysis of the results portion.

A word of warning to the hand-raisers who couldn’t make it on time for their respective shifts and when they did arrive, provided the standard explanation. The way-too-snowy sob story doesn’t cut it, I’m afraid. We tend to get blanketed in the white stuff occasionally this time of year. This is Canada, after all.

And don’t dare be fooled if your boss let your tardiness slide last Thursday.

Companies tend to give employees a mulligan when it comes to the first blizzard of the season. I wouldn’t press your luck

after the next big snowfall, if I were you. Ditto for those of you who are routinely late for work and assume that blustery conditions are a licence to meander in late. It’s never a good idea in any season, but make no mistake, ’tis definitely not the season for such a game plan.

The reason is simple.

When we’re about be to hit with a snowstorm there is always plenty of heads up on TV, radio, in the newspapers, online, around the office. Everywhere. It’s impossible not to know it’s on the way.

What’s more, given that we go down this path every winter, if you try and give examples of why you couldn’t make it on time, your boss has a laundry list of well-rehearsed comebacks for any occasion.

If you say both your bus was late or it was bumper to bumper on the highway, you’ll be advised you should have left earlier. If you say you couldn’t get up

the hill in your car, you’ll be reminded you should have had snow tires on by now.

If you say your battery went dead, you’ll be informed you should have had your annual winter tune up. And so on. The list at his or her disposal is as endless as it is obvious.

Which brings us to the present. There don’t appear to be any predicted outbursts this week and the forecast for Christmas Eve is for light snow only.

So my advice is you’d best think twice before calling in to say you’ll be running late that day. If you do, your boss will be licking his lips as he smirks: “If Santa can get here on time all the way from the North Pole, you shouldn’t have any trouble making it from York. Buh-bye. See you at precisely 9 a.m. sharp.”

Another chapter in library saga?

It’s too soon to be able to map out where all the political fights will be in the coming winter’s city hall budget process. But the Toronto Public Library Board has thrown down the gauntlet for the first big one.

This shouldn’t be a surprise. There is something about our library system that attracts duelling city councillors like nothing else.

Last term, former budget chief Mike Del Grande instigated a minor skirmish when he wondered why so many DVDs and books were circulated in languages other than English.

The same term, former budget committee vicechair Doug Ford made headlines by inventing the term lie-berry and disrespecting author Margaret Atwood, as he suggested closing a library in his ward to save some money. That was a Potemkin moment for bibliophiles to rise up and support their libraries.

This time, the membership of the library board

david nickle the city (most of whom were appointed under former mayor Rob Ford’s administration) is setting up for a fight that lands somewhere in between. In their 2015 budget submission, they’ve included a 40 per cent reduction in security service in branches across the city.

The move would save $660,000 from the budget, bringing its submission down to a two per cent increase over last year. It would mean that in some branches, there would no longer be a security guard present.

Board chair Mike Foderick maintains those branches don’t need a security guard, given their historic low level of incidents over the past number of years. For instance, at the Centennial branch, the security guard worked 27 hours a week in 2013, and

This week, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross promised a full investigation into the incident, which took place Saturday afternoon. The video shows a TTC bus traveling east on Eglinton Avenue pass through the intersection at Warden Avenue, after the light has turned red.

Ross said the video, which has been viewed more than 6,000 times since it was posted on YouTube, could lead to disciplinary measures ranging from a written warning to outright termination for the driver, whose identity is unknown.

Perhaps there will be some library patrons comforted by that statistic. But it’s hard to imagine very many who send their children to libraries to study or their elderly parents there to read and socialize will be comfortable taking a chance on safety. The union representing library workers (which doesn’t, incidentally, represent the security guards) has already taken a stand on the issue, as a matter of workplace safety.

If I were a betting columnist, I’d say by the time this works its way through the budget process there won’t be any change in the library system’s security complement.

For a service that a majority of Torontonians seem to regard as untouchable, it’s astounding politicians of certain stripes can’t seem to keep their hands off it.

In what’s become an endof-year tradition, the TTC is offering free transit rides for revelers on New Year’s Eve. From 7 p.m. onwards anyone taking the TTC will get to ride for free well into the first morning of 2015.

The subway will also remain open past its regular 2 a.m. closing with the last northbound train scheduled to head to Downsview from Union Station at 3:30 a.m. and at 3:37 a.m. for BloorDanforth trains leaving Yonge-Bloor station.

r. John Hagen was surprised when he was told he was receiving a mentorship award for the work he does at Humber River Hospital (HRH). Being the recipient of the 2014 Mentor of the Year Award - Region 3 (Ontario and Nunavut), from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, meant the chief of surgery at HRH beat out some 10,000 equally deserving individuals, he said.

“It’s kind of flattering,” he said. “Teaching surgery is very rewarding.”

The award recognizes a physician who has made a significant impact on the career development of students, residents or fellows, and who has a proven ability to be an outstanding role model, demonstrating the qualities and competencies of manager, scholar and professional. laparoscopic surgery Hagen, who was nominated by Dr. Ray Martin, HRH vice-president of medical and academic affairs, and Dr. James Rutka, RS McLaughlin professor and chair, department of surgery, University of Toronto, mainly focuses on laparoscopic surgery, an area that really intrigues medical students, he said.

“They think it’s really cool stuff,” he said.

A doctor with HRH for 30 years, Hagen grew up in the Northwest Territories where both his parents were doctors.

“My dad delivered me,” he recalled. “There were two doctors in the community we lived in, and my mother was the other one.”

HRH chief of surgery honoured as role model Hagen graduated from the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and finished his residency in general surgery at the University of Toronto.

Surgical director of bariatrics at HRH since 2007, Hagen is also assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto and is active in training residents and fellows in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery.

Calling him a “true champion of medical education,” Martin said HRH is fortunate to have Hagen as chief of surgery.

“He is a highly skilled and compassionate surgeon and provides exemplary teaching and mentorship to students, residents and fellows in Canada and beyond,” he said in a release. ‘dedication and excellence’ “Dr. Hagen continues to show an unwavering commitment to medical education and has taken a lead role in building on our affiliations with the University of Toronto and Queen’s University medical schools. His dedication and excellence is repre-

sentative of the quality of the medical staff we have at Humber River Hospital.”

Rutka had similar praise for Hagen, calling him a “phenomenal surgeon”.

“He has used his skills in this arena to mentor and teach many residents, fellows and junior faculty,” he said in a release. “Our students can’t wait to learn from Dr. Hagen and Humber River Hospital.”

More than 5,000 turkeys for Second Harvest wSecond Harvest fell just shy of

its goal for this year’s Turkey Drive.

The total number of donated birds came in at 5,334, which fell short of the 6,000 goal.

The 12th annual Turkey Drive was held at various Loblaws stores across the city Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14.

Police have arrested two men wanted in a sexual assault investigation at York University.

Police said an 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted while waiting for a bus outside the Student Centre Dec. 9 around 10:45 p.m.

The two men then boarded a TTC bus and left the area.

Maxie Rose, 21, and Joaquin Diaz, 27, both of Toronto, are each charged with one count of sexual assault.

Police said a dark 2004 Mercedes Benz E320 was driving erratically on the southbound Don Valley Parkway just after midnight, and the driver appeared to be assaulting a woman in the car. The car exited at York Mills Road, where the woman got out of the car. The driver also exited, assaulted the woman, and forced her back inside the vehicle, police said.

Police are concerned for her safety and believe she may have suffered serious injuries.

The woman is described as short, black, approximately 25 years old, with long curly black hair. She was wearing a black hooded winter jacket.

The vehicle’s licence plate is BNPC 119.

Mural part of health and wellness campaign at NYGH Lisa Queen lqueen@insidetoronto.com While it’s healthier to take the stairs than an elevator, staff, patients and visitors could be forgiven for wanting to steer clear of the dreary stairwells at North York General Hospital.

But a group of five Grade 11 students in Earl Haig Secondary School’s Claude Watson Arts Program set out to change that last month.

A r m e d w i t h p e n c i l s, paints and brushes, students Michelle Li, Emily Fu, Vanessa Cassar, Xiaoxuo Li and Rachel, who did not want her last name published, painted a mural on the landing between the first and second floors of a stairwell off the main reception foyer.

In addition to motivational signs with messages such as “Skip the elevator and take a flight for your health,” the mural is part of a health and wellness campaign called Step It Up aimed at encouraging people to choose the stairs over the elevator.

Michelle Li came up with the design for the mural.

“My mural is focused on kites and it’s really freeflowing and colourful. I think it just kind of wakes up the stairwell. It makes people

want to walk the stairwell and look at it. I definitely had fun doing it and designing it,” she said.

“But I think kites also relate to healthy living. You’re playing with kites. It’s really a free, fun, flowing piece so it’s really nice.”

Li is pleased her design will encourage people to make a healthy choice.

“I think it’s really neat because I personally like taking the stairs a lot and I encourage a lot of people to take the stairs,” she said.

“So, in a hospital, it’s really important to exercise and be healthy so if we can get the staff and patients to take the stairs, I think that will just be a really great addition to the day to exercise. I just want to encourage that and even make it fun to take the stairs.”

Hospital wellness co-ordinator Katherine Victorio is hoping the campaign convinces hospital staff, in particular, to skip the elevator.

“From the North York General perspective, it’s really to encourage more people to use the stairs because people are so busy here, people are on shift work, it’s a 24/7 facility, it’s really hard to get organized workouts for the staff,” she said.

The idea of the campaign

is “to get fit throughout the workday. It’s encouraging a little more activity during the day.”

The mural is the first of many to come, thanks to a partnership between North York General and Earl Haig that will see art students from the school paint a mural in a stairwell every term.

“This is an exciting collaboration between two key community institutions, ourselves and Earl Haig Secondary School, that encourages healthy living and creates a beautiful pieces of art. Partnerships like this build a stronger sense of community and promotes the values of volunteering and giving back,” hospital president Dr. Tim Rutlege said.

“Over the past year, our wellness program launched a successful campaign encouraging our staff, physicians and volunteers to take the stairs. Choosing the stairs is an easy way to squeeze a few minutes of exercise throughout a busy day and I know everyone working at North York General will enjoy viewing this mural as they literally take steps to improve their health.”

Bowles named Toronto’s new City Librarian

Turning to crowdfunding

32-year veteran of system got start in North York; Growth in e-books, digital services expected to continue

With programs in 14 locations throughout Toronto, including North York, the Fred Victor Centre has plenty of work to do in ensuring everyone it serves has a merry Christmas.

For the first time, the charitable organization is taking to crowdfunding to help it meet its needs, which include providing holiday meals to some 1,500 people and small gifts to its clients. It has taken to popular online crowdfunding site Indiegogo, reaching out for donations.

While the organization is looking to raise $20,000 to cover its costs this holiday season, the Indiegogo campaign has a more attainable $5,000 goal.

The online campaign runs through Friday, Dec. 26.

“I think it’s a really exciting time to be working in libraries,” said Vickery Bowles, who will be starting the job overseeing Toronto Public Library on Jan. 5.

Bowles’ appointment to the post was announced Tuesday by the Toronto Public Library Board. She will be replacing outgoing City Librarian Jane Pyper, who retired from the library earlier this year.

replacement, and eventually chose the 32-year veteran of the library system in Toronto.

Bowles got her start in the

pre-amalgamation North York Public Library system, and after 1998 oversaw the Scarborough and East York branches.

But since 2007, Bowles’ major preoccupation as Director of Collections Management and City-Wide Services has been to oversee the growth of Toronto’s electronic book collection.

In 2009, the e-book circulation was at 180,000. Now it’s at 3.5 million.

“First the trend was toward the audiobook and then the transition came to e-book,” she said.

“It coincided with the increased availability of e-book services, when the Kobo became available and then the Sony e-reader. Once

those really became available on the market, we saw a huge increase.”

In her new role, Bowles said she anticipates the electronic collection will continue its growth for another five years until it plateaus. But she is anticipating a strong electronic presence in other areas as well.

She said the new Fort York branch will incorporate various digital services.

“People can come to the library to create content, whether through book content – you can do self-pub-

lishing – or different kinds of content, where you have a maker fair or a digital innovation hub where people experiment with new technology like a 3D printer. I think there are so many ways where we can integrate new technology into the library.”

In a statement, board chair Michael Foderick praised Bowles.

“Vickery brings a wealth of experience to her new role, as well as a passion for public library service and a deep understanding of the library’s role in strengthening our city,” said Foderick.

“She begins her new role at an exciting time, and will be leading one of the world’s busiest urban library systems through a period of change as libraries continue to evolve in the digital age.”

North York girl plays Marie in national ballet company’s holiday production >>>from page 1 St. Bonaventure Catholic School, Jacqueline started her first year at Canada’s National Ballet School in September, where she is enrolled in Grade 6.

After going through an extensive auditioning process in July, Jacqueline was chosen to play the role of Marie.

The Nutcracker tells the story of Misha and Marie, a quarrelsome brother and sister, and their friend Peter, the stable boy. With Baba, their nurse, and Nikolai, their flamboyant uncle, the children travel from winter to spring and from childhood to adolescence.

Jacqueline’s first performance as Marie was Dec. 13, and though it was her first time on stage playing a lead role, she didn’t let nerves get the best of her.

“It was so fun,” she said. “It was a great experience. I was nervous backstage a lot, but once I was on stage it all went away.”

Leading up to opening night, Jacqueline would practice 90 minutes every day after school, in addition to

regular dance class and keeping up with her academics at the Jarvis and Wellesley streets school.

With her mom, Linda Leowinata, a former ballet student who ran her own studio in Surabaya, Indonesia, and with two older sisters in ballet, Jacqueline has always been surrounded by dance, she said.

As for future ballet goals?

“My number one goal is trying to get into the National Ballet Company of Canada,” she said.

Running until Jan. 4 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, 145 Queen St. W., Jacqueline only has five performances left with ‘The Nutcracker’ on Dec. 18, 20, 23, 28, and 30.

CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Several organizations held a joint press conference last Friday afternoon to demand further consultation on the updated sex education curriculum the Ontario Ministry of Education plans to implement next fall.

“We demand transparency,” said Mirtha Coronel, a member of Citizens for Good Education, consisting of more than 200 multi-faith, multiethnic community groups, during the press conference held at North York Christian Community Church. “Take the fall 2015 implementation plan off the table.”

The group asked the provincial government for “true consultation with parents” to be held rather than the online survey administered in November to be answered by about 4,000 parents – one from every elementary school across Ontario selected by the school principal or Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) chairs.

Citizens for Good Education members said that wasn’t sufficient and demanded the draft curriculum be made widely available immediately, both online and in print, so that all parents can read it at their own pace.

“Let’s do this properly and plan for 2016 instead,” Coronel added.

In 2010, plans to update the curriculum were shelved by then-Liberal premier Dalton McGuinty when a similar controversy arose with religious and other interest groups arguing the updated sex education curriculum wasn’t ageappropriate for grade school students.

The revised curriculum then outlined teaching Grade 1 students about genitalia with the correct terminology such as penis and vagina, Grade 3 students about homosexuality, and Grade 7 students about how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases including HIV. Rev. Dominic Tse of the Jubilee Centre for Christian Social Action noted one issue is that the curriculum assumes that talking about sex is valueneutral.

“It is not value-neutral. It has to with morals and values,” said Tse, encouraging more guidance and discussion of values in an age-appropriate way. “We’re not against revision,” he added. “We just want in. We want participation.”

In response to the press conference by Citizens of Good Education, Minister of Education Liz Sandals repeated that students need to have the best information possible to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

“In our increasingly interconnected world, students often get information from

unreliable and inaccurate sources. That is why an up-todate, relevant and appropriate health and physical education curriculum is needed now more than ever,” Sandals said in a statement.

She also reiterated that a parent in every elementary school across Ontario was given the opportunity to provide input.

“This means that we heard from parents with children in elementary schools across the province, and from all four of our publicly funded boards,” she said.

“The input we received from parents, along with expert advice and research, and extensive consultations with students, teachers, faculties of education, universities and colleges, including consultations conducted between 2007 and 2010, as well as input from other organizations and stakeholders, will assist the government as it finalizes the curriculum. We look forward to implementing an up-todate curriculum in schools for the 2015-2016 school year.”

The updated curriculum is expected to be available in the new year. In the meantime, Citizens for Good Education started a province-wide petition campaign demanding an “honest, meaningful consultation process.”
