Wait is over at Lawrence West Subway station gets its elevator Rahul Gupta rgupta@insidetoronto.com After eight years of waiting, Lawrence West Station finally has an elevator. The new lift officially opened Friday morning and for the first time riders with mobility issues will have the ability to get to subway level. That’s great news, said local city councillor and TTC chair Josh Colle, especially with two prominent seniors’ residences, Baycrest and Villa Colombo, located within walking dis-

tance of the station. “It opens up transit to a lot of the neighbourhood that’s been limited in the past,” said Colle as he and TTC CEO Andy Byford greeted morning rush hour riders at the station with news of the elevator’s opening. “To have a fully accessible station near two of the largest seniors’ communities in the city is huge.” The elevator is part of a series of modernization efforts to take place at Lawrence West, located on Lawrence Avenue West and above the Allen Expressway. Also included are automated fare entrances on the station’s mezzanine level

providing direct access to the subway platform for north and southbound travel along the Spadina portion of the YongeUniversity-Spadina line. Another initiative was the widening of the station’s bus bay, which was already completed. Final station finishes are expected to be completed by the end of the year. The elevator makes Lawrence West the TTC’s 34th accessible station, but getting to this point has taken eight years of design issues and a legal dispute with the contractor initially chosen for the construction. After re-tendering the work, it wasn’t until 2012 the TTC

received an acceptable bid to resume construction of the elevator. Even with the delays, Byford said there was every intention to complete the elevator. He also said the TTC was on track to have every one of its 69 stations fully accessible to meet a provincially mandated deadline of 2025. Modernization work, which includes elevator installations, is taking place in various phases at St. Clair West, Coxwell and Warden. It is estimated making the remainder of the TTC network accessible will cost around $480 million, meaning work plans for 17 stations remain unfunded.

Toy drive at Toronto Police’s 31 Division a success fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Thanks to 31 Division, the spirit of giving and receiving is alive and well this Christmas, as young people less fortunate were able to unwrap gifts donated by the community for the police division’s annual toy drive.

“It went really well,” said Auxiliary Staff Sgt. Alex Stefou, who assists the drive along with Staff Sgt. Steve Hicks. “I thought for sure we would be low, but donations came through at the last minute.” Some 1,300 donations will be given to eight agencies and organizations, along with Humber River Hospital,

she said. The biggest challenge during the toy drive, which benefits newborns through to age 19, was finding appropriate gifts for older teenagers, Stefou said. “It’s hard when you’re 17, 18, 19 years old,” she said. This year, donated items included books, dolls, stuffed

animals, games, make-up sets and cologne. They were to be handed over to the organizations requesting assistance for distribution to their clients, she said. Stefou, who has been part of the toy drive for 16 years, said she’s seen the program grow as more and more people need assistance this time of year.

Celebrating the holiday spirit at Westview Clark Kim ckim@insidetoronto.com The cafeteria at Westview Centennial Secondary School near Jane Street and Finch Avemue became a place for students, staff and community members to celebrate the holiday spirit together earlier this month. “It’s about giving back to the Jane and Finch community,” said Cherilyn Scobie, p r i n c i p a l o f We s t v i e w Centennial, who helped serve turkey meals with mashed potatoes, vegetables and

bread. She estimated more than 1,000 lunches were served. “There’s no catch to this,” said Scobie, adding this inaugural holiday event embraces the spirit and pride of their community. A local business, Bajwa Taxi, also donated more than 700 frozen turkeys that were handed out to families of Westview students as well as local residents who dropped by the school later that afternoon. free turkey lunch. “I’m so full,” he said. “It’s a good idea.” Fellow Grade 11 students Korina Taguba and Richa Modi agreed. “It’s like a school celebration,” said Richa, noting it’s a great way to socialize with friends and

people in the community. “It’s a good thing.” Korina said she enjoyed meeting people and hoped the celebratory event could happen more than once a year. “They should maybe do it twice,” she said. In addition to the holiday meal, there were fun activities and music at the event. “We’re hoping to do this again,” said Scobie, who became the principal of Westview this year. “It’s been amazing and beyond expectations.”

Local artists capture spirit of the season As part of its now-annual holiday tradition, The North York Mirror featured a piece of artwork on its front cover. This year’s cover artwork, Lovebirds, is by North York resident Taline Kavoukian and is an oil on canvas. Choosing this year’s work was made considerably more challenging given the other submissions. At top is a Shamsi Shahrokhi watercolour.

egardless of your beliefs, Christmas is a time best spent with those you love. In our hurried world, where time is precious, sitting back with those most dear to you is a way to recharge and focus on what’s important. This connection extends beyond your immediate family; it impacts everyone around you: extended family, neighbours, the entire community. More people seem to have smiles on their faces, wishing each other ‘Happy Holidays’ as they make their way through bustling malls, busy streets and crowded grocery stores. With so much cheer in the air, our view let’s try to extend that spirit of goodwill well beyond the holiMingle with days – why not make every day a day to keep happiness alive. your fellow And there are a plethora of ways to do that, whether it’s Torontonians helping a neighbour shovel the snow, visiting family, calling a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while, or heading out and spending time with your fellow Torontonians. There are so many activities, programs and attractions to enjoy over the holidays. Why not go for a skate at one of the city’s indoor or outdoor rinks? Additionally, you can also visit one of the city’s farms or zoos – yes, Riverdale Farm and both the High Park and Toronto zoos are open during the winter months. You can also check out the many historic sites – Colborne Lodge, Montgomery’s Inn, or the Scarborough Museum to name a few. And for the more adventurous among us, why not enjoy one of Toronto’s many trails, including The Shared Path along the Humber River? And while you’re out there, take in a new part of town. The city is filled with amazing places to walk, great local shops to drop in to, and amazing food experiences from all around the world. This holiday season, why not take in everything the City of Toronto has to offer – whether it’s with friends or even if you’re looking for some alone time. Check out our calendar online at www.insidetoronto.com for holiday events happening now through to 2015.

Future NHL talents on display over the holidays Kids from all over the world who dream of making it in the National Hockey League will be going head to head at the Air Canada Centre in the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship during the holidays. But that’s not the only place in town to find NHL hopefuls showcasing their talents over the next two weeks. The city is a hotbed for minor hockey holiday tournaments where you can find many more future NHL stars on display. If you drop by you’re liable to bump into my buddy Sean in the crowd at any of these popular tourneys. He’ll be hard at work, honing his craft between whistles. Not as a player – we’re talking heckler. Sean thinks it’s high time NHL clubs took advantage of what he considers a lucrative, untapped potential arena revenue stream: boisterous fans such as himself who regularly entertain the crowd with their remarks during stop-

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY pages in play. The sponsors would pay the teams for the right to utilize hecklers to help advertise their products and they’d pay the hecklers, too. Here’s what it would sound like during the game. Heckler 1: “Hey ref, you stink. Yeah, you heard me. You stink. With a capital PU. But you wouldn’t have to stink, mind you. In fact, you wouldn’t even have to sweat at all. Not if you used Fresh As A Daisy deodorant. That’s right, Fresh As A Daisy. Available at the end of Concourse 2. Speaking of which, you might want sprint over there after the next time out, just to be on the safe side. I hate to break it to you, but even the linesmen are looking at you funny.” Heckler 2: “Slashing? Are you out of your mind? No way was that slashing.

You want to see slashing? Head down to Savourama City where prices are being slashed so low it’ll make your head spin. Which will be an added bonus because once it starts to swivel again you might actually catch some real slashes once in a while. You know, the ones committed by the other team that you never seem to be able to see.” Heckler 3: “You call that a trip? I‘ll tell you about a trip. Any trip on Dreamy Cruise Lines. In fact, book a Caribbean cruise in the next hour and Dreamy will give you $500 off per person. That’s right, 500 big ones. Each. Operators are standing by. So get the lead out and get on the phone before the deal expires. Trust me, you’ll never forgive yourself if you blow that call, too.” Heckler 4: “Oh brother. Not again. I can’t believe that last one. Hey ref, I’ve got an idea. Wake me up when you make a good call, OK? Or better yet,

have a Rock Around The Clock timepiece wake you up instead. Rock Around The Clock, where timing is everything. By the way, get one without a snooze button. You don’t need any help in that department. You’re already on perpetual snooze.” Heckler 5: “Are you joking? No penalty? That should have been five minutes AND a game misconduct. How the heck did you miss that elbow? You ought to have your eyes examined. And what better place to have your eyes examined than Sight For Sore Eyes. That’s right, Sight For Sore Eyes. Where our skilled opticians will fit you with glasses while you wait. So you can quickly get back to doing what you do best: messing up hockey games.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. Above, Centennial College community and justice services program students send confetti flying during the donation ceremony at the school’s Progress campus to benefit Fostering, Empowering, Advocating, Together (FEAT) for Children. The students raised $5,000 toward the purchase of a bus to help FEAT kids. Left, Centennial College professor Shelley Upshaw makes her address during the donation ceremony. A

father-daughter duo that transports Toronto families to visit loved ones in prison in Kingston and Campbellford did not win their new bus in an online charitable fund contest. FEAT (Fostering, Empowering, Advocating Together) for Children of Incarcerated Parents is not a finalist in its third bid for funding with the Aviva Community Fund contest, which receives entries from organizations with ideas to “create positive change in their community”. But that hasn’t put the brakes on Jessica and Derek Reid’s work. Last weekend, the pair had planned to rent an additional van or two to take as many children as possible before Christmas to visit their dads in Warkworth mediumsecurity prison in Campbellford, Ont. At present, the Reids are leasing their new $70,000, 25-seat airportlike shuttle bus for $1,000 a month. “It’s disappointing,” Derek said of the contest loss. “But we’ve built strong relationships with Centennial College. I know the students and their professor will give us strong ideas for next year.” Recently, Centennial College

community and justice services students, aided by their professor Shelley Upshaw, presented the Reids a $5,000 cheque from their It Takes a Village fundraising initiative for FEAT. Students built a FEAT donation page at www.canadahelps. org/en/pages/featfor-children/ that has raised $4,550 to date. Centennial students also voted en masse for FEAT on the Aviva contest website. Every Saturday and Sunday at 7 a.m., the Reids and their bus leave Franklin Horner Community Centre in south Etobicoke for a 12-hour or longer jourFEAT co-founder Jessica Reid, right, wipes away ney beginning at three Shawnkayla as she expresses her thanks. family pickup locations, $40; to Warkworth prison is $30. primarily Dufferin The run would otherwise cost Street and Lawrence Avenue West more than $100, well out of reach of and Markham Road and Progress many families, Reid said. Trips purchase another vehicle or for to one of six Kingston prisons cost

capital funding. In the meantime, Reid said they have “many irons in the fire” to attract funding to pay the outstanding $40,000 owed on their bus. A FEAT funding application is in to the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Reid continues to reach out to Rotary clubs “from Toronto to Kingston” to attract funding. A lawyer in Kingston is currently assessing an opportunity to make FEAT the recipient of a lawyers association’s annual fall boat cruise fundraiser, which brings in between $20,000 and $30,000, a tear for Reid said. Jessica plans again to walk 270 kilometres from Toronto to Kingston to raise funds. Her recent walk over eight days raised about $16,000. Media coverage is also fueling donations. “Media attention is going to be key to more exposure, and hopefully, lead to a white knight or individuals as a whole donating to

support the program,” Derek said. “People who will say, ‘I think this is a great idea. Let me help with the funding of it.’” The North York Mirror’s website, www.insidetoronto.com, has published articles on FEAT, as has the Toronto Star. CBC’s W5 aired a story that followed a visiting family inside the former Fernbrook medium-security federal prison on a visit in a parolehearing room. CBC’s The National will soon broadcast a story on FEAT that interviewed a family of two sons, a mom and a common-law partner on the bus, and followed them inside Warkworth prison for a visit with their dad, son and partner, Reid said. “It’s the first time we know of that a camera has gone inside a federal institution and filmed inside an actual visitation room,” he said. “We’re hoping it leads to some donations.” However, the Reids remain focused on their work to help and support the children. “We’re trying to change the trajectory some of these kids could be on with their dads being incarcerated.”

david nickle the city how unsuited Rob was for the city’s top job, and were likewise ignorant or incredulous of the fact that the picture Ford painted of the city’s problems and the solutions to those problems had so little to do with reality. But when four years later, with all of that amply and painfully demonstrated, many – about a third of those who voted – cast their vote with Doug Ford, there was no denying it. Toronto’s old idea of itself as a city no longer applies. Of course, that’s not to say we underwent dramatic change over 2014. Toronto’s “elite,” as the Fords describe them, have always been too enamoured of the shiny cultural artifacts of downtown. And the elites have always smugly boasted about Toronto’s multicul-

Trying to parse the meaning of 2014 is only slightly less challenging than summarizing a Thomas Pynchon novel. But if not now, then when? So let me take a stab at it: 2014 was the year that Toronto realized it was not, in fact, a city. It was not, at least, the kind of city that we have always thought we were and the place we hoped we might remain: an idealized place where ethnic and economic divisions are not obstacles to consensus and harmony. We always knew this vision of Toronto might be a mirage. But in 2014, we stepped through the illusion and were faced with the undeniable evidence: on Oct. 27, only John Tory was able to exceed the support that remained with the Ford family, Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Doug. That Torontonians would elect Rob Ford mayor in 2010 might have been excused as a blip. Voters either did not know or could not believe

Two years after changes were made to improve pedestrian safety where the Allen Expressway meets Lawrence Avenue West, the city councillor for the area admits there are still concerns. Eglinton-Lawrence incumbent Josh Colle says he’s asked the city’s transportation department to review the effectiveness of a signalized pedestrian crossing placed at the intersection, where impatient drivers exiting from Allen onto Lawrence often resort to “queue jumping” – swerving around stationary cars waiting to turn – leading to potential altercations with crossing pedestrians. fast cars are travelling. The boards can be placed by request at most residential streets as a visual reminder to drivers to obey the speed limit. Locations are chosen via suggestions from the public, the police and the city’s transportation services department. Find out more at www. toronto.ca/transportation BUS-PEDESTRIAN COLLISIONS probed Last Friday’s tragic TTC bus accident in Scarborough was the second such incident involving a pedestrian that week. Fourteen-year-old Amaria Diljohn was killed after she was struck by a TTC bus turning from Neilson Road onto Finch Avenue East. The driver later turned himself in, and the TTC says video footage downloaded from the bus will aid police investigations of the incident. Following Diljohn’s

tural cred. It’s been tougher for the elites to recognize many of the people bringing those cultures and speaking those languages have gone to live in parts of the city that have been allowed to deteriorate, and since amalgamation in 1998 been farther from the decision-making centre of Toronto than ever before. The vote for the Fords came from many in those communities, despite the fact that the Fords offered nothing tangible there other than to articulate affection and camaraderie. That vote sustained over unprecedented scandal, in spite of lies against a backdrop of the illegal drug trade that is one of the most genuinely corrosive elements that a city can face. And that is what we’ve learned, more than anything, in 2014: the nature of our long, chronic injury. In 2015, here’s hoping we can learn how to heal it.

death, TTC CEO Andy Byford promised to speed up a review of vehicle operator training that had been initiated following multiple instances of bus drivers running red lights. On Dec. 15, a 40-year-old woman was struck by a TTC bus near Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue, and was transported to hospital as a precaution. Police are investigating. SERVICE COMING TO GO TRANSIT wINCREASED

GO Transit riders can look forward to more bus and rail service in the new year. Right after the holidays, GO is promising more weekday service on the Milton train line, more bus trips for York University commuters headed to the University of Waterloo, and adjusted scheduling to improve travel times. Also, for a third straight year fares are going up. The increase takes effect in February. Rahul Gupta is the Mirror’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Paramedics urge people to ‘make the right call’ CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Having chest pains, trouble breathing, uncontrollable bleeding or suffering a traumatic injury? Don’t hesitate – call 911 immediately. But if you are simply suffering flu or cold symptoms, fevers, cuts, sprains or any other relatively minor ailment, you may wish to heed the advice of a public information campaign launched by Toronto Paramedic Services, asking residents to stop, consider their options, and, most importantly, “make the right call.” Running until the end of December, the Make the Right Call campaign is one Toronto Paramedic Services chief Paul Raftis said is designed to educate the public about the health care alternatives available to them in non-emergency situations: seeking medical advice from the registered nurses on-call at Telehealth Ontario’s 24/7 telephone line; visiting one of the 2,720 walk-in clinics in Toronto; or simply booking an appointment with a family physician. Raftis said Toronto’s highly trained paramedics respond to more than

Toronto Paramedic Services has launched a campaign to educate people on considering their health care options before calling 911.

250,000 emergency calls a year, or about 685 calls a day. “Since 2005 we’ve seen a really big spike with the aging population – we’ve actually transported about 60,000 new patients every year since then – so it’s a very, very high call volume.” Many of those callers, however, are simply not aware they have options other than calling 911 for non-emergency situations, Raftis said. While calling 911 for an ambu-

lance essentially means callers receive a mobile emergency room staffed by highly trained paramedics at their doorstep, that kind of service is not always necessary for minor medical problems – and doing so can divert paramedic resources from responding more quickly to real medical emergencies. “It takes some ambulances out of service, when they’re servicing calls that maybe we don’t need to,” Raftis said. “We’re not suggesting that half of

our call volume is this way, because that’s not the case. It’s probably a few thousand calls a year, but those few thousand calls, if we were able to, we’d be able to service emergency calls more quickly if we weren’t tied up responding to those (nonemergency situations).” That said, the Make the Right Call campaign – which has been translated into 10 languages and is being advertised over social media, radio, TV and newspaper ads – isn’t about telling people not to call 911 when they need to, but simply urging them to educate themselves about their health care options, Raftis said. “It’s important to us that people know, if you have a serious medical emergency, don’t feel bad about calling 911. Call us, and we’ll have highly trained, highly skilled paramedics come and take care of you. We really want to focus on folks calling us when they have a serious emergency – and if they’re ever in doubt, they should always feel comfortable calling us,” he assured. “But if they just take that second to ask themselves, you know, ‘could this be dealt with better at a walk-in clinic or another route?’, that could be helpful to us.”

Health care options for non-emergencies w Call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866797-0000 for a free, confidential telephone service offering up health advice and/or general health information from a registered nurse. Visit www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/telehealth w Visit your family physician. For those residents who don’t have a family doctor, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care offers up an online Health Care Connect Program at www.health.gov.on.ca/ en/ms/healthcareconnect/public/ overview.aspx to help connect them with a local doctor taking new patients. w Walk-in clinics are also excellent options for those looking to avoid a trip to the emergency room, but can’t wait for an appointment with their doctor. Walk-in clinics are a good option for when a family member has a cut, sprain or another relatively minor ailment. To find a clinic close to home, residents need only key-in their postal code at www. ontario.ca/locations/health
