Toronto’s Kristina Valjas hopes to follow in her brother’s footsteps – right to the Olympic Games. The 28-year-old University of Toronto grad, who grew up in Willowdale, has a good shot at representing Canada in Rio this summer in women’s beach volleyball, along with her 30-yearold partner Jamie Broder. Last April when the pair won the gold medal at the Fuzhou Open in China, it marked Canada’s first women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour medal. “It was so exciting to be part of something that was historic because it was the first medal ever earned by Canadian women in beach volleyball,” said Valjas. “Not only that, it was gold. To stand on top of the podium on international soil and to work hard towards something for so long and actually seize it for a moment – because definitely I want more where that came from – is very exciting and it’s just a testament to our hard work, and proving that we’re doing the right thing and heading in the right direction.” The pair currently rank eighth in world tournament standings – second best among Canadians – with the top 15 >>>CANADIAN, page 6
