North York hospital emergency department gets $5M makeover In an effort to better serve patients, North York General Hospital (NYGH) is undergoing a $5-million redevelopment of its emergency department. The redevelopment of the Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg Emergency, which started last summer at the Leslie Street and Hwy. 401 site, is scheduled for completion this spring. “We have seen an increase of patients as our community is growing and we realized that our emergency department would

have to be reconfigured and renovated to meet their needs, and to enhance our patients’ and families’ experience,” said Cliff Harvey, the hospital’s vicepresident, planning, facilities and support services. The renovation is primarily focused on the entrance, triage and waiting areas, including an increased waiting and treatment area known as the Yellow Zone, he said, adding the redevelopment aims to enhance >>>BIG, page 6
TDSB ratifies agreement with elementary teachers The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has ratified a local agreement with teachers represented by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO). “We are pleased that the board’s 11,000 permanent elementary teachers have ratified their local agreement,” John Malloy, director of the TDSB, said in a statement. “It is an important step in building stability for our students.” Ratified local agreements have also been reached with three other employee groups including secondary occa-
sional teachers represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF); education workers (i.e. child and youth workers, speechlanguage pathologists, social workers) represented by the Professional Student Services Personnel (PSSP) Unit of OSSTF; and skilled trades workers represented by the Maintenance and Construction Skilled Trades Council (MCSTC) Meanwhile, local negotiations continue with high school teachers as well as occasional elementary teachers and support staff.

Wondering when the snow plow went through a street or sidewalk you intend to use? Well, the City of Toronto has taken the guesswork out of it with a new web page. The web page enables residents to see the location of plows, sidewalk plows and salt trucks and when individual streets were serviced by the City’s winter operations crews. The new web page uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) installed on plows and salt trucks to determine when a road was serviced by using a colour coded system. If a road was serviced within the last four hours, the road will be shown with a green line. If a road was serviced within the last four to 12 hours, the road will be shown with a blue line and if serviced between 12 to 24 hours earlier, the road will be coloured red. The web page is available at www.toronto.ca/plowTO At this time, information on exactly when plows or salt trucks will service specific streets is not available. Varying amounts of snow received during any snow episode and potential route changes make it difficult to predict exactly when vehicles will attend to certain roads, the city said.

Ayman Abdalla, left, leads a workshop in the new Flemo City Media Lounge and Recording Studio after the youth space officially opened at the Dennis R. Timbrell Resource Centre.
New place to hang out for Flemingdon Park youth FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Young people in Flemingdon Park now have a place to create, record, and learn. The Flemo City Media Lounge and Recording Studio was officially launched earlier in February inside the Dennis R. Timbrell Resource Centre near Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue, which will house learning opportunities in sound engineering, broadcasting, and photography for youth and young adults aged 13 to 29. The facility, a partnership between the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department and Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office, is funded by donations made by the Jays Care Foundation, the United Way of Toronto, and York Region’s Youth Challenge Fund. “Anytime we can give youth an opportunity to be involved and build that
sense of community is a good thing,” said Don Valley West Councillor Jon Burnside. “A lot of traditional programming is based on sports, but this gives youths with more artistic qualities an opportunity.”
“

The idea of a recording studio at the centre was the suggestion of Dr. Hooley McLaughlin, vice-president of science experience and chief science officer at the nearby Ontario Science Centre, though he’s quick to point out it was the youth who should really take credit. After working with youth
at the centre in the late 1990s, McLaughlin had the idea of creating a radio station at the site, he said, adding by 2006 the young people were in complete control of the concept. “The idea was already in the community,” he said. “It wasn’t really my idea. It’s all because of them. It was gratifying seeing the opening of the lounge.” McLaughlin, who has worked at the Ontar io Science Centre for 30 years, said creating the youth space at the resource centre is, so far, his favourite project. “The young people took charge,” he said. “This shows the power in youth themselves. My job has always been to create exhibition programming and I care about the learning of young people. I have a fond connection to the youth in Flemingdon, and I’m there to be supportive, but the leadership comes within their own groups.”

Seneca College’s Newnham campus is home to Ontario’s first Mechatronics Simulation and Demonstration Centre (MSDC). Officially launched Friday at the Hwy. 404 and Finch Avenue campus, the joint venture by Seneca and Siemens Canada offers students training and certification in the mechatronics field. The college transformed an existing lab facility to serve as the training ground for students to pursue the Siemens Mechatronics Systems certification program, a pillar of the Siemens Canada Engineering and Technology Academy (SCETA) established in 2015. “Siemens is a global leader in advanced manufacturing and industry, and it’s an honour to partner with them to open Seneca’s Mechatronics Simulation and Demonstration Centre,” David Agnew, president of Seneca College, said

in a release. “Our thanks go as well to the government of Ontario for its investment in this sophisticated teaching and learning environment. Together, we are helping provide Ontario with the highly skilled graduates we need to continue to thrive in the complex and sophisticated world of advanced manufac-
turing.” Provincial funding of $651,000 contributed to the development of the centre and its curriculum. Mechatronics is the combination of mechanical, electrical and computer technologies as well as control and systems theory into a single system used in production and manufacturing.
UNITY’s Youth drop-ins re-opening Whether you want to break, tag, beatbox or be an MC, there’s a weekly drop-in program to help you find your voice. You just have to show up, and it won’t cost you anything, says UNITY Charity, which is reopening three hip-hop youth programs in Scarborough and one in North York. “We’re the only spaces that do teach these art forms,” said Catherine Turcotte, an artist also known as Catalyst. “The youth choose what they want to work on. It’s really their space.” The Yorkdale Breaking Drop-In, on Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. at Art Starts on Dufferin Street, is a dance drop-in “really oriented toward breaking,” Turcotte said, with a one-hour lesson, • 2001 Audio Video • Best Buy Canada Ltd. • Brick Mattress • Bruno’s Valu Mart • Canadian Tire • Career Choices • Coppas Fresh Market • Court Surface Supecialists Flying Flyer • Food Basics • Foodland Ontario • Foody Mart - Promobiz Solutions • Fortino’s • Fresh Value Supermarket • Freshco
and three hours to practice and dance together. UNITY’s other drop-ins generally try different urban art forms every week, from graffiti to spoken word. People travel across the city for it, said Turcotte.

East. Turcotte said participants use the programs to reach personal goals, or just to let out stress and pressures. They develop self-confidence, and often want to get more involved in their communities, starting their own hip-hop events. UNITY, which announced the restart last week, has been aiming at year-long programming, and this may be the first year the drop-ins continue into the summer, she said. The programs serve ages 10 to 18 but some participants are older, and one event last year had younger kids coming in with their parents, said Turcotte.

Summer job can help make a positive change in a young person’s life
P
rime Minister Justin Trudeau marked his milestone of 100 days in office by marking what he hopes will be a new milestone for Canadian youth. Trudeau wants to get close to 70,000 youth working this summer, and the federal Liberals are committing massive amounts of money over the next three years to make that a reality. On Friday, he made a surprise visit to Toronto’s Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club where he announced the government would be injecting $113 million each year for the next three years to get young people in the workforce. The Canada Summer Jobs program provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees in an effort to help create summer job opportunities for students. The Trudeau government is on the right track to setting up students for success. When people are offered our view help, there tends to be a ripple effect. Support gives rise to Jobs today more support, and a spirit of and receiving is created. make engaged giving At the centre of this decision youth of future is not political popularity, but an understanding that empowering youth today will make them the engaged adults of tomorrow. They will learn life skills by doing them. They will learn co-operation and interpersonal skills by dealing with employers, customers and coworkers. They may develop meaningful friendships, build savings and start dreaming of a future of possibilities, that may have been clouded with fears and uncertainties. A job today equals an education tomorrow. A job today allows one to support her family in tough economic times. A job today helps a young person have hope for the future. The federal funding will be distributed to Canada’s 338 ridings. Areas that have higher levels of unemployed youth will get more funds. The program funds job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the next school year. Employers and students interested in the program, should visit servicecanada.gc.ca/csj for more information. The application period for Canada Summer Jobs 2016 has been extended until March 11, so there is still time to get involved.

Sadness is at the heart of the Uber-taxi battle There have been few issues at Toronto City Hall so consistently suffused with sadness as the Uber-X ride sharing fight with taxi drivers has been this past 18 months or so. From the outside, it’s been easy to confuse that sadness with rage. At the early February meeting of Toronto council, taxi drivers’ rage was certainly on display: several had to be removed from the council chamber as they watched councillors step away from seeking an immediate court injunction to stop Uber-X from operating in the city. Last week, Paul Sekston, one of those taxi drivers, took that anger to the airwaves and announced the new United Taxi Workers’ Association would be staging a protest to disrupt the NBA All-Star Game and run-up to it. It would have been a bad scene had it happened, but it didn’t. The same day, Feb. 11, he and other members of the taxi industry had a
david nickle the city sit-down with three city councillors – Janet Davis, Glenn De Baeremaeker and Kristyn Wong-Tam – after which, they decided to call it off. What clinched it? They simply needed to hear city councillors say aloud the thing that is undeniably true. Uber-X, as it’s currently operating in the city, is illegal. And there it was: the heart of the sadness beating beneath the crumbling front of rage. Taxi drivers, or at least Sekston, need if not a hug, then at least some clear allies in what they perceive, correctly, as the fight for their vocational lives. Mayor John Tory has tried to provide some assurance after he mused about the inevitability of disruptive technologies in a way that seemed to be giving Uber-X a moral if not entirely legal break.
And from the perspective of taxi drivers seeing their livelihoods dry up, Uber-X has gotten an easy ride from almost everyone else on the legal front. Yes, it’s complicated. When cab drivers came to the Toronto Police Services Board demanding more drivers be charged, Chief Mark Saunders explained doing so en masse is legally and operationally challenging. And when cab drivers demanded Toronto enforce its own bylaw – passed just last fall – setting up requirements for UberX’s continued operation that the ride-sharing app and the drivers who use it couldn’t and wouldn’t meet, council demurred. Again, it was for strategic reasons: if an injunction can’t be heard for three months, and the city’s new regulations governing ridesharing apps will be before council in two, the entire matter may become moot. Meanwhile, Uber Canada continues its charm offen-
sive, delivering kittens to stressed-out office workers and experimenting with shuttle services to underserved communities near the downtown – and, of course, by undercutting taxi fares for customers who are becoming used to trading fare savings for the invisible risks of riding an unregulated service. And to add to the sting: the Toronto licenced taxi model isn’t a sterling alternative. While taxis are regulated, the vehicles more rigorously inspected and drivers more comprehensively insured, Toronto’s system of commodified plates and absentee owners still makes for an ugly feudalism under which drivers work now. It’s been awful to watch, no doubt awful to live, and it’s hard to see anything near a happy ending to it all.

North York student nabs coveted $100,000 Loran Award fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com For Aditi Sriram, the realization she is a Loran Scholar hasn’t quite sunk in. “It all feels like a dream,”

Big changes include new exterior canopy near entrance >>>from page 1 patient and family experience through a number of design features. “The first one and most noticeable is the addition of the exterior canopy for weather protection for those using the emergency department, as well as entering the hospital through this north entrance,” Harvey said. “This renovated entrance will make wayfinding clearer for patients and visitors as well as staff, physicians and volunteers. Another design feature is the addition of a clerestory windows over the Yellow Zone waiting area which will bring natural sunlight into the waiting and treatment area. This feature will enhance the care environments for a better patient and family experience. “Other design features include new wayfinding in the department. There will also be a renovation to enhance the area for mental health patients and their families, increasing the safety for those patients, while reducing the noise and traffic.” The cost of the redevelopment is fully funded by the North York General Foundation.
one of 30 Loran Award winners for 2016, which comes with a $100,000 prize for postsecondary education over four years for undergraduate studies in Canada. The Jane Street and Finch
Avenue area resident was one of 80 finalists from 4,200 applicants battling for 30 Loran Awards. Sriram took part in the national selections Feb. 5 and 6 in Toronto after moving on from initial interviews in
the fall. “Everything that I’ve been involved with, whether it be in the community or in school, I thought of them as little parts that didn’t add up to anything more than what

they were,” Sriram said. “After being named a Loran Scholar, I can now decisively say that every little thing that I do, and that anyone does for the world, adds up. It’s this knowledge that means the most to me. Loran saw something in me that I wasn’t able to see in myself, and for that I am forever grateful. I’m so excited to embark on this journey and make the most of it. I can’t thank Loran enough for giving me this opportunity, as well as everyone who has supported me thus far.” A tennis player for years, the grade 12 student began volunteering as a coach for the Jane and Finch Community Tennis Association four years ago. She also helps with the running of her school’s science club, started a TEDx club, plays flute in the school band, and serves as a Girl Guides youth leader. A science lover, Sriram created a biology event in grade 10 for visiting middle school students who were taking part in Mackenzie’s science Olympics, she previously told The Mirror, adding she’s competed in similar events held at various universities. After becoming a TedxYouth@Toronto ambassador, and knowing not all her fellow schoolmates could attend the conference, she decided to create a TEDx club at the school last year. Though she wasn’t able to pull off a conference at her high school, Sriram was undeterred and organized one for this spring, she said. Founded in 1988, the Loran Scholars Foundation is a national charity which partners with 25 universities to invest in exceptional young Canadians, with award winners selected based on evidence of character, service, and leadership potential.
Steep fares to be part of Union Pearson Express review RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Metrolinx will conduct a review of the Union Pearson (UP) Express’ operations, including fare pricing, following the release of disappointing ridership numbers. Since the four-stop train
route launched to great fanfare in June, ridership numbers have consistently dropped, to the point in which some trips have reportedly had more UP staff on board than actual customers. Me t ro l i n x c h a i r Ro b Prichard acknowledged UP’s pricing has played a role in
UP’s struggles, but he said the move for a review of the service is part and parcel of the growing pains experienced by any new business. “Starting a business is always a learning process, and (every business) goes through adjustments in strategy, how it’s marketed and priced,” said
Prichard last week. “We’re actively doing that and the really great thing is we have an excellent service which works very well, with high reliability and performance.” The review will track factors that may have hampered UP’s ability to attract new ridership since its debut as a premium
rail transportation option for travel between Pearson airport and Union Station: building brand awareness, improving wayfinding, and convincing people to change their longstanding travel habits to give the service a try. While a review won’t be completed until June, any
decision to alter UP’s fare structure would require a special board meeting before then held in public, said Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig. UP’s current pricing model is practically 10 times that of the TTC’s Airport Rocket bus: $27.50 for a one-way trip without a Presto card.

It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and IIC hearing aids are smaller and more sophisticated than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid–now with wireless technology–provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

For the second year in a row, North York curler John Epping had his aspirations for an Ontario Tankard championship dashed on the final shot in the 10th and final end of the championship game. If anything, this year’s 6-5 loss at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre in Brantford was even more of a heartbreaker with Epping’s rink, based out of North York’s Donalda Club, beaten on a fantastic, walk-off shot by four-time national and world champ Glenn Howard who resumed his domination of Ontario curling after winning eight straight from 2006 to 2013. As the Canadian Curling Association noted in their press release, “Howard made an angle double-raise takeout to score a game-winning deuce in the 10th end for the 6-5 triumph.” L a s t ye a r, Ep p i n g , a Peterborough native now living in North York, found

North York curler John Epping finished as finalist again at the Ontario Tankard, losing on a spectacular last shot by four-time Canadian and world champ Glenn Howard.
himself in a nearly identical situation, only with the roles reversed in a 7-6 loss to Mark Kean. Epping just couldn’t manufacture his own miracle shot on his last rock. T h i s y e a r’s 1 1 - t e a m Tankard, which ran Feb. 1 to 7, featured four teams with Toronto connections – and they all managed to finish in the top four to make the playoff round. Team Howard, curling out of St. George’s in Etobicoke,
finished in first place (10-0) followed by Team Epping at 8-2, Don Mills Collegiate alumni Greg Balsdon (curling out of Kingston’s Cataraqui Golf & Country Club) at 7-3, and Toronto resident Mike Harris (curling out of mid-town’s Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club) at 6-4. Balsdon is a former Tankard winner in 2014 (which ended Team Howard’s streak of eight straight Tankard titles).

Funding gift that keeps on giving Call it the funding gift that keeps on giving: the TTC announced this week it is expanding service on almost 40 bus routes, particularly during rush hour. The move, made possible with the introduction of 50 new buses, comes out of a funding boost granted by the city to the transit commission last year, which worked out to $95 million more for operational improvements. The money has helped pay for everything from more frequent service in non-peak travel times to the expansion of the Blue Night bus network. And since last September, has allowed the TTC to continually roll out additional service. For a full list of improved routes visit www.ttc.ca express free ride proves popular wUp
