Moveathon at Downsview Park helps kids with special needs Thousands of people are heading to Downsview Park Sunday, June 8, to help youngsters with physical and developmental disabilities.

And they’ll have a great time in the process.

The 17th annual Zareinu Moveathon Festival, a day filled with food, rides, entertainment and sports events, will raise money for the Zareinu Educational Centre.

With an administrative office in North York and a school in Thornhill, the centre provides therapies and treatments for children with special needs so they can reach their full potential.

A feature of the festival will be the Zareinu Experience, an interactive educational zone where people can learn what youngsters with disabilities experience every day.

The event will also feature a one-kilometre kids’ run, five- and 10-kilometre runs, five- and 10-kilometre Kangoo runs, a 20-kilometre family bike ride, a two-kilometre family walk, power paddle boats, a rock wall, a swing carousel, a bungee run, a merry-go-round, pony rides, a petting zoo, meltdown and cannon blaster rides and a fantasy circus.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and can be accessed through the entrance at Sheppard Avenue and John Drury Drive.

Paramedics join in at Science Centre’s Human Edge exhibit

While the machine is usually used to assess the heart activity of a single patient, Toronto Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Supt. John Klich hooked up the electrodes to the arms and legs of the 14-year-old girls.

He instructed them to hold hands or touch each others’ noses. As long as there is contact between them, the electrical circuit is complete and the monitor shows their heart rhythms.

The fun grew as Gabe joined in.

Klich went on to explain if the teenagers made a fist with their right hand and placed it across their chests, that would be about the size and placement of their own hearts.

He also directed them to look at a display containing an elephant heart, several times the size of their own hearts.

Klich and other ambulance attendants were at the Science Centre May 28 and 30 as part of Paramedic Services Week.

They gave tours of their ambulance bus and set up cardiac, respiratory and orthopedic displays in the new AstraZeneca Human Edge exhibition hall.

opportunities here in the (Human Edge) displays, having paramedics here to also provide some kind of street context or street stories or applicability,” Klich said.

“It gives people a better sense how it relates to every day life.”

At the respiratory display, a mannequin made sounds simulating breathing difficulties, possibly due to an asthma attack.

Visitors were able to use a bag valve mask (BVM) to pump air into the “patient” and watch his lungs fill with air.

The device can be hooked up to an oxygen tank if a patient requires 100 per cent oxygen. By comparison, the BVM provides about 20 per cent oxygen and mouth-

to-mouth resuscitation provides about 16 or 17 per cent.

Showing off a first aid kit and splints at the orthopedic display, paramedic Tara Tewari focused on teaching people to play safe as summer approaches.

That includes wearing bike helmets or equipment such as knee and elbow pads, if the activity calls for it.

Someone can still sustain a brain injury wearing a helmet, but it reduces the severity of the injury and the recovery time, Tewari said.

Meanwhile, she explained that paramedics would apply a splint for a potentially broken limb.

“We’re always told we don’t have X-ray eyes. We have to treat a potential

injury with an obvious deformity as a potential break so you take the proper precautions,” she said, adding the injury needs to be immobilized and the patient made as comfortable as possible.

“That (making the patient comfortable) is the biggest part of the whole job with a trauma, with an injury like a broken leg or broken wrist, especially with little ones. It’s terrifying, you’re touching it, nobody wants you to touch something that’s injured.

So if you can at least get it into a position that is comfortable for the patient, that’s pretty much what we do in practice.”

At 86 and legally blind, nobody would blame North York’s Bill Wall for taking it easy in his golden years.

But Wall, an avid supporter of cancer charities, is gearing up for his seventh annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer on June 7 and 8.

Once again, Wall, who has macular degeneration and has been legally blind since 2003, will ride on the back of a tandem bike steered by Don Nadeau.

The two friends will pedal the 200-kilometre journey to raise money for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the Top 5 cancer research centres in the world.

Wall and Nadeau met several years ago when they participated in the Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers as Wall walked alongside his wife, Barb.

That event came seven months after Wall underwent double bypass heart surgery after doctors discovered he had a heart murmur as he trained for the Boston Marathon.

In 2008, the two men rode in their first Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Their story inspired others to join their team, The Power of Bill, which now has more than 30 riders.

Last year, the team raised $57,000 and hopes to double that amount this year.

Honour veterans and their families for military service

T

his Friday marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when thousands of Canadian soldiers and Allied forces led a successful invasion of France off the beaches of Normandy during the Second World War. It’s an event that has earned a honourable place in our history books and put us forever in the debt of the brave soldiers who risked their lives for such a critical mission, which would ultimately turn the tide and end the war.

Canada’s role was a major one but it did not go without sacrifice, as Canadians suffered more than 1,000 casualties, including 359 killed.

As we honour and remember those who served – sadly, a lifetime ago for most of those soldiers – let’s extend our commemoration on this special day to also consider our view other impacts of military service.

At Toronto City Hall tomoranniversary row, a special event is taking place in Nathan Phillips Square of D-Day to mark the anniversary of D-Day and one of the speakers is Joanne O’Halloran, whose father Edward served during the Second World War and was at the Normandy invasion.

She’ll be sharing her experience as a soldier’s child. It’s a perspective we don’t hear often, but one that needs to be heard, as well as that of partners, mothers and fathers.

Soldiers and veterans need our support, but their families do too.

Something else that should be incorporated into the tradition of military commemoration is increasing support for the mental health needs of soldiers when they return home.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be a relatively new term, but it’s not a new illness and its designation comes too late for generations of soldiers and families who suffered without help.

We have a responsibility to look after the people who fight for us, so let’s support them wholly during Friday’s service and after as well.

A little family food for thought to ponder

I

headed to A&W to have a quick bite after work the other day and as I sat there enjoying an uncle burger I couldn’t stop thinking about my niece.

She’d just come home to attend a conference and her folks (my brother and sister-in-law) had invited me to drop by on the weekend. I don’t get to see her that often anymore, so it’s always great when she rolls into town.

With her so much on my mind though, suddenly the uncle burger started to look a little lonely. I figured I should get a niece burger, too, to make it feel better.

So I went back up to the counter.

Well, you could see the disappointment on my uncle burger’s face when I returned empty-handed.

Alas, there is no niece burger on the menu. As it turns out, it was on omen of inexplicably absent relative burgers to come.

Take the nephew burger, for example. While I was

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY going to be visiting with my niece, the plan was to Skype my nephew, her brother, who won’t be back in Toronto until July. I was really looking forward to that call, until I scanned the menu again and discovered another glaring omission.

How was I going to explain to him that there was no nephew burger, either?

What was just as perplexing is that there was no aunt burger either. I thought the protocol in all matters was ladies first.

Besides, a niece burger and a nephew burger need an aunt burger as much as an uncle burger, don’t they?

Now, in fairness to A&W, plenty of family members are celebrated. There’s a poppa burger, mama burger and baby burger.

There is also a grandpa burger, teen burger and buddy burger, too. There

used to be a grandma burger once upon a time.

Ditto for baby burger twins.

But alas, a good chunk of the family tree can’t be found. There’s no brother burger or sister burger, nor is there a brother-in-law burger or sister-in-law burger.

I didn’t dare tell any of this to my sister-in-law. Not only is there’s no sister-inlaw burger, sister burger or aunt burger, heck, there’s not even a significant other burger. She can’t catch a break. She gets the mama burger. Period. End of meal.

It just doesn’t seem fair.

You also can’t get a godfather burger, godmother burger or godchild burger.

I suppose because there is an uncle burger there could be a goduncle burger one day, but given there’s no aunt burger or auntie burger I wouldn’t count on seeing a godaunt burger or godauntie burger anytime soon if I were you.

There’s also no boyfriend burger or girlfriend burger

to speak of and sadly no fiancé burger or fiancée burger either, I’m afraid. So when your niece marries her fiancé or your nephew marries his fiancée, if you drop by to pick up either a nephew-in-law burger or a niece-in-law burger you’re going to be out of luck.

Surprisingly, all this worry over missing relative burgers had me working up an appetite again.

So I went up to the counter to order one last burger for the road.

“Another uncle burger, mister?” the cashier asked.

“Actually, I kinda had my heart set on a second cousin, once removed burger, please. Twice removed, if it’s not too much trouble.”

“One uncle burger it is, coming right up.”

According to the survey, published Monday and based on responses from 3,274 small business owners in the province, 67 per cent said they are “very concerned” about the state of the provincial economy and another 30 per cent said they are “somewhat concerned”. Japanese film festival introduces juried grand prize

or the first time in its three-year history, the Toronto Japanese Film Festival will be a juried event.

Having prominent critics from the world of Japanese filmmaking judge the films is an indication of the growth of the festival’s popularity and prestige in a very short time, according to James Heron.

Heron is the executive director of North York’s Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, which hosts the annual festival.

This year, it runs from June 12 to 27.

The five-member jury, made up of filmmakers, film professionals, writers and educators, will award the grand jury prize to the best feature at the

The winner will receive a cash prize of 100,000 yen (about $1,075 Canadian) and a certificate.

Meanwhile, audiences will vote for their favourite film by completing ballots at the end of each screening.

Based on their opinions, the Kobayashi Audience Choice Award will be presented to the biggest crowd-pleaser.

The award is named in honour of Coby and Yone Kobayashi, a secondgeneration Canadian couple of Japanese descent whose vision and generosity over 50 years were critical to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s success, Heron said.

He expects 6,000 filmgoers to attend this year’s festival, which will screen

18 films during the twoweek festival.

That is a jump of 1,000 people over last year and 2,000 over the festival’s debut in 2012.

Many of the films being screened are making their Canadian or North American premieres, testament to the festival’s growing prominence, Heron said.

“We are able to get the newest and the biggest and the best from Japan.

We think our lineup has taken another step up,” he said.

“Internationally and particularly in Japan, people are starting to take notice.”

Not only will the event offer a chance to see some of the finest Japanese films, but festival-goers can experience other cultural events as well.

“During the two weeks of the festival, we will have a lot going on,” Heron said. “We are trying to put that much more festivities in the festival.”

For example, festivalgoers can enjoy musical performances and visit the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s new Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre and library.

Opening night will feature the Canadian premiere of the romantic comedy-drama A Tale Of Samurai Cooking.

It will also include a reception catered by one of Canada’s finest and priciest restaurants, Kaiseki Yu-zen Hashimoto.

That will allow the festival to recognize a decision by UNESCO (United Nations Educational

Rob Ford’s rehab working wonders for Toronto voters

t was not so very long ago that Mayor Rob Ford longed to be anywhere but in the bosom of his constituents – at least when it came to the observation of Canada Day July 1.

In 2011, 2012 and 2013, our mayor would make a beeline for his family’s cottage rather than wave a flag in Toronto and coincidentally march in the Pride Parade. Not so in 2014.

In an interview from the facility where he is undergoing therapy for alcohol addiction, Ford declared this week he’ll be back in Toronto for July 1.

At that point, he’ll attend Canada Day celebrations and take his re-election campaign out of the holding pattern it’s been in since April 30.

He told The Toronto Sun he’s a changed man, and is ready to make some amends for all the wrong he’s done us.

And of course he wants to run for another term as mayor of the biggest city in Canada.

When that happens, I suppose we’ll all have to

Two men injured in alleyway shooting Two men were treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries following a shooting near Jane Street and Driftwood Avenue Saturday.

Police said two men, aged 55 and 57, were talking in an alleyway when two men began shooting around 10:15 p.m.

old woman was walking along Craigmore Crescent when a 77-year-old Jeep Compass driver struck her while attempting to reverse out of a private driveway around 12:50 p.m.

The woman was pronounced dead in hospital.

The Dalton McGuinty-Kathleen Wynne Liberals have squandered more than one billion dollars of our hard-earned tax dollars on worthless initiatives. That money could have gone into improving transit across the city. We will help our residents by lowering taxes for families and lowering hydro bills. The province has to manage our finances and manage our debt so we create more transit and improve our roadways for residents.

I helped to launch Bell Community TV, organized youth media tours to educate young people about the inner workings of a major broadcasting organization such as CTV. I educated community groups about how to get media coverage. I am passionate about York West. I will work hard to help our community and our youth.

■ Auto insurance rates in York West are postal code prejudice; depending on where you live, not how you drive, you pay more. This inequality puts stress on middle-class families and makes absolutely no sense. We pay the highest auto insurance rates in all of Toronto.

Residents are still waiting on the reduction promised by the Liberals last year. It’s time for a government that is accountable, and doesn’t make empty promises.

■ The people of York West should not be forced into poverty because their government prefers to give billions of tax dollars to corporations. We need good jobs and adequate income supports. The NDP will create more jobs with a Job Creator Tax Credit. It’s a practical idea – create a job, get a tax credit. We will gradually increase the minimum wage, so families can keep up with the rising cost of living.

■ We waste too much time and money stuck in gridlock and squeezing into buses like the 35 Jane and 108 Driftwood like sardines. I’m running for the NDP because they’re the only party that will deliver results. We will improve transit service and buses so residents can get home to their families on time. The Liberals refuse to even fund these projects. We can’t keep waiting on the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension line.

■ One local issue that I will continue to champion as MPP is the completion of the first fully digital hospital in North America, Humber River Hospital, while at the same time retaining the existing Humber River Regional Hospital at Jane-Finch.

Humber River Hospital builder donates time and money Plan Group is not only helping to build the new Humber River Hospital with bricks and mortar but with financial donations and a volunteer commitment too.

Plan Group, part of the consortium building the hospital at Hwy. 401 and Keele Street, is donating $250,000.

To recognize the gift, the play therapy room will

be named in Plan Group’s honour.

Wanting to do more than hand over a cheque, Plan Group, whose office is just north of the new hospital, also entered into a formal volunteer program with Humber River.

Three days a week, three company volunteers spend time with young patients staying in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Unit.

The program gives the children and teens a chance to socialize and play rather than dwell on treatments and being in hospital.

The 14 volunteers and patients chat, play cards and ping pong, do artwork, read and have sing-alongs, The volunteers, who say they get as much out of

the experience as the kids, even brought gifts such as movies, a karaoke machine and arts and crafts supplies to the unit’s holiday party in December.

“The experience has absolutely been amazing.

To have people taking the time to come and spend quality time recreating with the kids, and making their time here more meaningful is very valuable

and it means a lot,” Doris Galas, clinical manager in the child and adolescent mental health program, said in a statement.

“It’s all about having fun, and it’s wonderful that these volunteers are willing to give up their precious free time, to come to the hospital and just spend time with these kids in a neutral way. It’s a different experience for the

kids, and an opportunity separate from their treatment plan at the hospital.

The clinical staff are present during the recreation period, but it’s a time where the volunteers bond with the patients and they engage with the kids because they want to – out of their own goodwill.”

The Canadian premiere of this acclaimed musical by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens plays at the Zion Church Cultural Centre until June 15.

he Civic Light-Opera Company has a special treat for musical theatre aficionados as they offer Toronto audiences their first chance to see The Glorious Ones.

Broadway fans know of the work of composer Stephen Flaherty and librettist Lynn Ahrens who wrote Ragtime, Seussical and Once on This Island.

In The Glorious Ones they offer a valentine to the performers of Commedia Dell’arte and in particular Flaminio Scala and his troupe of “cranky, maladjusted misfits” who entertained the crowds in 17th century Italy with their bawdy comedy.

In the first half we see the roots of contemporary slapstick comedy, while in the second half the musical reveals its considerable heart.

Based on a book by Francine Prose, and inspired by a true story about real people, the musical introduces us to the actor Flaminio (played

by Joe Cascone), his buxom leading lady Columbina (Joanne Kennedy), a pair of young lovers, Isabella (Elizabeth Rose Morriss) and Francesco (Jordan Quinn) and stock performers Pantalone (Eric Botosan), Dottore (David Haines) and Armanda (Susan Sanders).

Flaminio’s greatest desire is to be remembered for his theatrical contributions.

Cascone pulls out all the stops to show Flaminio’s love of performing. His final aria, I Was Here, will move you to tears not only for the performance but also because the song is what the show is all about.

Susan Sanders is both funny and touching as Armanda who stays with the troupe year after year because of her unrequited love for Flaminio. In a sack, she secretly stows away bits of Flaminio’s costumes and props which she tenderly reviews at the end of the evening. If Cascone’s solo doesn’t stimulate tears, Sanders performance of the song Armanda’s Sack surely will.

Joanne Kennedy offers a lusty performance as Flaminio’s mistress and costar Columbina, remaining oblivious to the love of the troupe’s tailor Pantalone.

Eric Botosan as Pantalone is given a tender solo near the start, Pantalone Alone, which Botosan presents with great feeling.

David Haines is given several moments to shine as Dottore, the quack doctor of the troupe. His solo The Comedy of Love

was a crowd-pleaser.

Jordan Quinn offers a sensitive portrayal of Francesco who becomes Flaminio’s protégé. When Francesco meets and falls in love with Isabella and champions her play to be presented by the group, it causes a rift with his mentor.

Quinn and Elizabeth Rose Morriss as Isabella duet very nicely in their love song Opposite You. Their voices complement each other beautifully.

Joe Cascone has turned the intimate stage in the Zion Cultural Center into a wonderful playground for these performers, and aided by the colourful costumes created especially for this production by Sheila Lacasse really captures the look and style of Commedia Dell’arte performances.

The Glorious Ones is something new and different but it is also something special.

Commit to Kids program protects children from sexual abuse Blue Jays’ R.A. Dickey and Canadian Centre for Child Protection team up to keep kids safe CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Toronto Blue Jays ace R.A. Dickey has teamed up with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection to help prevent young athletes from having to endure the agony of child sexual abuse he himself suffered as a young boy.

“I carried the pain of sexual abuse for more than two decades. As a kid I didn’t know how to deal with it, so I tried to forget. But you can’t forget,” said Dickey in a statement.

He disclosed in 2007 that he

was sexually abused both at age eight by a female babysitter and again later by a male teenager.

“When kids register for sports, they are entrusted to our care and we have every responsibility to take all the steps possible to create positive experiences to enhance their development.”

To achieve those ends, Dickey and the Jays Care Foundation have partnered with Canadian Centre for Child Protection to develop the Commit to Kids – Sport Edition.

The program, said the centre’s director of education Noni Classen, is one that strives to help create safer environments for children in sports organizations by providing strategies, policies and a plan for reducing the risk of child sexual abuse.

“We created this program because we know organizations that work with kids have a vulnerability to attract certain individuals to work or volunteer there who may be seeking access to children for the purposes of gaining sexual access,” she said. “But

we also have individuals who come to work for child-serving organizations who can use poor judgement at times and who may not intend to gain sexual access, but through the relationships that ensue, they may end up engaging in harmful relationships with kids.”

The Commit to Kids - Sport Edition program is about preventing those types of harmful relationships from forming.

Through both its cybertip. ca program and relationships with law enforcement agencies, Classen said the Canadian Centre for Child Protection is all too aware that many people arrested for possession and manufacturing of child pornography have worked or volunteered with child-serving organizations.

“Criminal reference checks are not a fool-proof method anymore. Yes, they’re part of the process, but not the entire process.”

To help fill in those gaps, the Commit to Kids kit – which has so far been sent to more than 1,700 sport organizations across the country – includes a Guide for Sport Organizations and training video, as well as materials for parents and sports leaders, providing organizations with a plan using a risk-management approach that is much broader than criminal record and child abuse registry checks for preventing child sexual abuse.

To help promote the Commit to Kids program, the Jays Care Foundation put together two public service

announcements featuring Dickey and airing on Rogers Sportsnet.

In both, the famous knuckle-baller urges child sports organizations to “help kids achieve their dreams” and “protect kids in sport.”

“A baseball field, or even a hockey rink – all sports alike, normally a safe place for kids, providing memories that last a lifetime. But for some, memories for all the wrong reasons.

I experienced sexual abuse as a child,” he says in one of the spots, before directing people to BlueJays.com/protectkids to learn more.

■ Making life more affordable. Having lived in this community for 12 years, I understand this issue first-hand. After a decade of Liberal government, families are falling further behind – paycheques have stayed the same but life keeps getting more expensive. New Democrats will stand up for working families and make life more affordable by creating jobs, taking the HST off hydro bills and giving a sensible increase to the minimum wage.

■ Young people are the future of this community. Education can give every child the chance to succeed. But Liberal education cuts have led to school closures, less access to educational supports and fewer opportunities for students.

Worse yet, Ontario has the highest university tuition fees in Canada. New Democrats will stand up for adequately funded public schools, freeze tuition fees and make student loans interest free.

■ After a decade of Liberal waste, delays and mismanagement, congestion costs our economy billions annually. Only Andrea Horwath’s New Democrats can be trusted to kick-start transit relief and make transportation investments across Ontario. We have a balanced plan to reduce corporate tax giveaways and invest in transit infrastructure. Families and businesses need transit relief, safer roads and an end to gridlock – not more empty Liberal promises.

■ As a student and aspiring criminologist, my experiences with Toronto’s school system and job market fuel my desire to more actively represent this community, make life more affordable and ensure that tax dollars are respected.

Issues related to gaps in community services and job-creation initiatives for local residents are especially important. An active member of this community, I volunteer with TNO Youth Centre to raise awareness of the needs of youth in Thorncliffe.

■ Naturally I hope to champion many issues, which is why I have aligned myself closely with the Green Party. Having to pick one, I would stress liveable cities: to have safe, convenient access to the amenities, employment, schools, recreation (exercise) and so on. A community that promotes walking and bicycling, electric bicycling and limits exposure to automobile traffic exhaust and risk of injury or accidents.

■ As an MPP I would improve the school curriculum to encourage knowledge in the new green technologies; give students the skills in entrepreneurship; significantly increase apprenticeship programs especially with small progressive businesses. My health practitioner background compels me to insist that schools concentrate on increased physical activities as I see the results of ill health in the later stages of life and the inefficient emphasis and misuse of tax dollars on health care.

■ I would champion the subway relief line through the riding via Don Mills Road.

Metrolinx’s The Big Move had plans for Don Mills with an LRT and that should happen if not a subway. A public transit network is crucial: The Eglinton LRT is a great start but brings users to ill-equipped hub points with transfer options that significantly delay arrival times. Transit means opportunities for park path bicycling and a network of ravine paths.

■ My second time running and I’m keenly aware that dedication is needed to spread the understanding of sustainability and environmental health (local and global). I work and live in the riding; I’m the senior chiropodist at the Flemingdon (Community) Health Centre for the past 25 years. I’ve been an activist locally since I moved into the community 10 years ago.

■ The biggest issue both locally and across the province is jobs and the economy. One of the things that is holding our province back is the poor state of our provincial finances and I will bring my expertise in the financial sector to the Legislature to make sure the province is well run so that businesses will want to invest here and create jobs now and in the future.

■ Almost everything in the PC Million Jobs Plan is aimed at creating job opportunities, especially for youth. We will modernize the apprenticeship system so young people can get into the trades. We will work with colleges and universities to ensure students graduate with the skills employers are looking for and to create more spaces in science, technology, engineering, business and math because these disciplines drive economic growth.

■ We will put the province in charge of rail-based transit and major highways so the pieces all work together for commuters. We will build subways rather than LRTs that take away lanes on busy streets. We will start with an east-west express subway, which will take pressure off the existing transit routes and roads including those here in Don Valley West. And we will do this by finding efficiencies rather than by raising your taxes.

■ I am a chartered professional accountant with more than 20 years experience in the financial sector, most recently as a managing director at BMO Capital Markets. I was born and raised in Toronto and have worked and lived in Toronto or the GTA all my life. I have been married to my wife, Robin, for 22 years and we are the proud parents of two sons, one in university and one in high school.

■ I will continue to strengthen our community by ensuring people have access to good jobs by growing our economy, protecting public services and ensuring people have fair pensions.

Our Jobs and Prosperity Fund will attract new business to Ontario and we will keep business taxes low. Locally, we are helping people find jobs through investments at the Labour Education Centre in Don Mills, the Employment Resource Centre in Thorncliffe and Skills for Change in Flemingdon.

■ Our government is providing opportunities for youth by investing in our economy and protecting public education. Our Youth Employment Fund has created 11,000 jobs for youth. We are maintaining the 30 per cent off Tuition Grant that saves university students up to $1,730 a year and college students up to $790 a year. Additionally, we increased the minimum wage to $11 an hour and are increasing wages for personal support workers and licensed daycare workers.

■ We are building the Eglinton Crosstown LRT that will reduce traffic congestion and allow people to get from work to home faster. We are investing in full-day two-way GO train service every 15 minutes that will help commuters in Toronto and across the GTHA (Greater Toronto Hamilton Area). We are also building the UnionPearson Express Rail service, extending the University subway line to York University and York Region, and are committed to funding the Sheppard and Finch LRT lines.

■ I am Ontario’s 25th premier and was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2003 as MPP for Don Valley West. I have served as Ontario’s minister of education, minister of transportation, minister of municipal affairs and housing and minister of Aboriginal affairs. I am a resident of Don Valley West and my partner Jane and I have lived in North Toronto for more than 25 years. I have three adult children and three grandchildren.

The Mirror sent questionnaires to candidates from the four main parties. The responses of the Liberal, PC and NDP candidates are below.

CANDIDATES ■

As I talk to residents, I hear again and again that providing support and stability for seniors needs to be a priority in our community. The current Canadian Pension Plan will not be enough. We need strong leadership on pensions with a made-in-Ontario alternative to enhancing retirement security. An Ontario Retirement Pension Plan would initially benefit three million Ontarians, providing them with a brighter retirement future.

■ Investing in infrastructure and development will help us build a strong economy.

With our 10-year, $130-billion economic plan, we are investing in the future of Ontario. We will also attract economic investment by funding education, skills and training, creating opportunities for all and that includes supporting our youth. Our Youth Job Strategy will create 30,000 jobs over two years and has already created 11,000.

■ We need a formula for cities, where all three levels of government work together to achieve an integrated and fair transit plan.

We have already committed $1.4 billion to building a subway line that will service the residents in the east end of Toronto. We will continue to respond to local transit needs, as shown by our investments in the Don Valley Parkway bus lanes and Oriole GO Station.

■

■ As an MPP for Don Valley East I will be moving health care closer to home. I want residents of Don Valley East to be as healthy as possible while staying close to home. I will expand home care and long-term care availability, by promoting more types of care in the home. I will be promoting healthy lifestyle choices including daily exercise and investing money into preventing many chronic diseases such as diabetes.

■

To attract economic investment to Don Valley East, the Ontario PCs have a plan to create one million jobs over eight years. As your MPP I will decrease personal income tax, make energy more affordable and cut red tape for small businesses. Our Million Jobs Plan addresses Ontario’s most urgent need: more and better jobs.

■ The Ontario PCs will put the province in charge of all rail-based transit and major highways in the GTA. This will better connect Toronto and the 905 region. Our first priority will be the East-West Express subway that connects the people who live in Etobicoke and Scarborough. We will do it without raising taxes by making transit the top priority in the province’s existing annual capital budget.

■

■ People of this community need better access to transit with quicker links to subways.

The Liberals cut $4 billion from transit funding, leaving municipalities in the lurch. Their current promises are an attempt to escape their 10-year record of scandal and mismanagement. The NDP will deliver transit relief with a practical plan to get better transit on Sheppard, a Downtown Relief Line and put more buses on the road. Families need reliable, frequent transit options.

■ With two major highways, two rail lines and an educated work force, this community has tremendous potential. But under the Liberals, investment has stagnated. Ontario’s unemployment rate remains well above the national average and the deficit has increased for two straight years. The NDP has a plan to reward companies that create jobs. Our job creator tax credit is worth 10 per cent of the salary of new hires up to a maximum of $5,000.

■ Only Andrea Horwath and the New Democrats can be trusted to kick-start transit and make transportation investments across Ontario. The NDP has a balanced plan to reduce corporate tax giveaways and invest that money in frontline transit service. We’ll work to reduce average commute times by 30 minutes and will get started on the Downtown Relief Line. We are asking corporations that benefit from transit investment to contribute to building transit infrastructure.

■ From working in health care I have firsthand experience of the necessity of maintaining our public, accessible health-care system as well as the improvements that need to be made. I have a master’s degree in computer science and currently work for a small startup in the mobile industry.

I hold degrees from Carleton University and was first elected to public office in 2003 as the Toronto District School Board trustee for Don Valley East. Then in 2011, I was elected Member of Provincial Parliament, serving as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, since 2013. With deep roots in this community, I have both the local experience and broader leadership needed to ensure this community continues to have effective representation.

Firefly is sure to brighten up her new home O

ur pets this month hail from the beautiful town of Caledon just a short drive north for us Torontonians. What better time of year for a picturesque road trip and the adoption of a new family member?

Firefly is a two-year-old spayed female that is, at best guess, an Australian kelpie, or a mix of one.

She has become a staff favourite and no wonder since she’s been patiently waiting at the shelter since November for that perfect fit home-wise.

Firefly is initially apprehensive and anxious meeting new people.

The staff has been working on making new people a positive experience for Firefly with good strides. She would be best suited to an adopter who is experienced and would continue her positive association work and confidence building.

“Proper training and socialization will help Firefly to be more trusting of new people,” said Stephanie Rose, spokesperson for Caledon Animal Shelter. “Firefly is quiet, extremely clean and listens well to commands. She is great off-leash in our large fenced yard and enjoys playing with toys.”

CAA lists Dufferin Street as Ontario’s worst road for third time Toronto has 70 per cent of the worst roads in Ontario.

The Top 10 list of worst roads was revealed by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) at a press conference at the intersection of Dufferin and Dupont streets last week.

“When Mister first arrived at our shelter it took him a long time to adjust to a new environment.

He gets along with his companion Diamond, but does not take to new cats well,” said Rose.

household with someone to pamper him. Mister prefers a large litter box with a covered lid, please and thank you – a man needs to have some privacy.

Toronto Community Housing residents to see repair work start CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Residents living in 30 Toronto Community Housing (TCH) communities will begin to see much-needed repairs completed in their homes this month.

“We want to go in and work with the residents...and address all issues in their unit

in a timely way,” said Sheila Penny, TCH vice-president of facilities management.

An estimated 16,000 repair jobs, which include kitchen and bathroom refurbishments as well as common space repairs, are to be completed by the end of this year through the TCH’s State of Good Repair program.

Locally, some of the work

began in mid-May with residents living in the Doug Saunders Apartments at 1775 Eglinton Ave. W. to see general maintenance improvements in their units over the next two months.

Penny also noted those living at 41 Willowdale Ave. had repairs start last month.

While residents were asked beforehand through notifica-

tions in the building and staff presentations what repairs needed to be done, Penny said more residents can still sign up for the program as the repair work is being completed in their respective buildings.

TCH selected four contractors – Baycrest Project & Construction Management, C2C Construction Ltd., Greenline Renovations Plus

Ltd., and Rainbow Contracting Inc. – to be used on a rotating basis to deliver bulk general repairs this year worth an estimated $4.9 million.

“We want to make sure we’ve done the right work in the unit,” said Penny, noting that residents will be surveyed to offer feedback after the work is completed.

“We’re pretty excited about

the program.”

Greg Spearn, interim president and CEO of TCH, said more work will be required over the next decade with TCH facing an estimated $2.6 billion in capital repair needs to keep their buildings in a “fair state of repair.”
