Toronto police are investigating after Willowdale MPP David Zimmer’s constituency office this week received a Bar Mitzvah greeting card containing antiJewish sentiments. Officers at 32 Division confirmed they are looking into a complaint filed by Zimmer’s staff over the unsigned card received at the constituency office Monday. Hand-written inside the card is the message “Jews Stink! ...and so does this Jewish greeting card ...and so does this stamp issued by Canada Post.” The card contains a Happy Hanukkah stamp with eight candles. The same stamp was used to mail the card, which features the message “Especially for you! Mayor’s committee selections defensible To the editor: Re: An opportunity to be inclusive, Editorial, Feb. 22. Regarding Councillor Adam Vaughan not getting a seat on the mayor’s executive committee. I see no reason what-soever for the mayor to place anyone on the executive committee who does not fully support him. That would be akin to Prime Minister Stephen Harper or Premier Kathleen Wynne placing a New Democrat in their cabinets. The fact that not a single councillor from Toronto-

East York Community Council sits or has sat on the executive committee since 2010 confirms my reference to provincial and federal cabinets. Out of 12 councillors representing those wards, only Mary Fragedakis might have an outside chance of being considered. The other 11 councillors all proudly claim leftist roots. Why would any politician surround themselves with the enemy? Mayor Rob Ford has already swallowed the bitter pill through Karen Stintz that it is not always a good idea to keep

It is just too bad that there are so few conservatives on council from which Ford can select from. But, that is par for the course as it is usually the people who are “socially engaged” that run for any political office, eventually.

In that way, he may even be able to take on the appearance of being “inclusive” by comparison. Toronto is spending annually a billion dollars more than it actually needs to run and manage this city, simply due to the leftist agendas of the past 15 years. In addition to the police, his office alerted legislative security at Queen’s Park and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. Len Rudner, the centre’s

director of community relations and outreach, said he’s not surprised the card was sent anonymously. “This is the equivalent of crawling from under a rock in the morning, peeing on somebody, and crawling back before you can be caught,” he said, adding the sentiment of the card is contemptible. Rudner joked the cardsender went to time and expense to buy and mail a card containing an immature message to Zimmer’s office. “The amount of time to... achieve this level of clarity, they may have had to buy five or six cards to get the message just right,” he said. “It’s contemptible and laughable.” The Jewish community does not need to waste any more time worrying about the incident, Rudner said. “I feel much more comfortable saying this is a silly eruption of a silly mind,” he said.

City crews are out in double the usual numbers this week to patch and repair potholes on Toronto’s streets. Nearly 100 personnel (or 25 to 30 crews) will be out on the streets this week and in the coming weeks, the chair of the city’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee announced last week. “With the freeze-thaw cycles that have taken place this past winter, there is always an increase in the number of potholes on our roads,” Don Valley East Councillor Denzil MinnanWong said in a statement late last week. “Our crews work hard throughout the winter, when not involved in snow operations, to fix potholes in order to prevent the situation from worsening in the spring.” Potholes are created when water penetrates the top layer of asphalt through cracks in the road. Over the last three years, the City of Toronto has repaired an average of 200,000 potholes per year at a cost of about $25 per pothole – spending approximately $5 million per year to fix potholes. While city staff usually repair potholes within five days of them being reported, requests are prioritized based on the amount of traffic on the road and the severity of the pothole. For those of us who’ve spent time with Layton and Chow, watching the couple’s last months and earlier days re-enacted so uncannily is extraordinarily moving. It will be curious to see how the film is received by viewers outside the bubble of Toronto, and national politics. Because like it or not, Jack is more than a film about a politician. Coming less than two years after Layton’s death, when Layton’s successor Thomas Mulcair is aiming to be prime minister in 2015, and Chow is likely considering a run for mayor in Toronto a year earlier, Jack is something of a rallying call for progressively inclined voters. This, of course, is an

extension of what Layton clearly intended when he handed off his death-bed letter to Chow, and the rest of the country, with that stirring call toward optimism and love and kindness. It is also an extension of his detailed instructions, delivered earlier in that same letter, telling his party how best to mobilize in the months following his death. It’s tempting to be cynical on that basis and dismiss Jack as nothing more than an exercise in publicly funded NDP propaganda. It would be easier to do that if the sometimes hokey idealism depicted in the film weren’t so accurate a reflection of how it manifested in the real lives of Layton and Chow; if the story of a generally decent, earnest and publicly motivated political couple who finally won and then lost again, weren’t the story we’d all lived through just two years past.

n a few days, those of us so inclined will have an opportunity to relive the summer of 2011, when Jack Layton, the first New Democrat federal Opposition leader and almost prototypical progressive Toronto politician, succumbed to cancer. It was emotionally wrenching then; watching the new telefilm Jack, it is nearly as wrenching now. The film, screened for the family, supporters and some media earlier this week, airs Sunday night on CBC. Jack is far from perfect. it paints an at-points absurdly sunny picture of the very political life Jack Layton and Olivia Chow led together, and for a biopic offers frustratingly few clues about the things that contributed to Layton’s politics and political drive. As my companion at the screening pointed out, there’s no “rosebud” moment in Jack. With that said: The telefilm packs an emotional punch. Much of that can

She saw the conditions first-hand last month during a trip to Japan, which included visiting universities that will benefit from the foundation’s fund. “The cleanup has gone pretty well, but now it’s rebuilding. And the human cost is enormous,” Hosaki said. That’s where the centre’s additional $1.4 million, on top of the initial $100,000, comes in. Collected from residents and businesses over the last two years, the donations

will help young people in the communities of Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima pursue education they would not have been able to afford otherwise. The money is being directed to three initiatives. T h e f i r s t i s t o t h re e regional government funds established to assist the educational needs of children affected by the disaster. Second, 15 university scholarships of $5,000 each are being established this year and nine scholarships of $5,000 each will be set up in subsequent years until the funds are used up. Third, a $15,000 grant is being donated to a Hope for Youth program set up by the Canadian embassy in Japan. The fund allows Japanese

youth to come to Canada for six-month periods to enhance their language and cultural skills. “We’re really thrilled to be able to do this, to help the children in the area,” Hosaki said. The foundation is grateful for donations that have poured in for relief efforts over the last two years, she said. “We didn’t know what to expect (in donations), but the outpouring of support was overwhelming,” she said. Donations were raised through a variety of efforts, from children selling cookies to corporate contributions, Hosaki said.

‘Jacob and Jack’ links generations in comedy

ames Sherman’s comedy Jacob and Jack keeps the audience on its toes as it jumps back and forth between two generations. Backstage scenes depicting Jacob Sherminsky, a star of the Yiddish theatre in the 1930s, are folded in with scenes of his grandson, Jack Shore, some 75 years later. Jack is preparing a special one-night-only performance that pays tribute to his grandfather, and we witness a number of parallels between the lives and the behaviors of both sets of performers. The first half of the play chronicles the back-stage chaos as the actors prepare for their respective performances. The second half takes place after the reportedly disastrous presentations with a good deal of door-slamming as the characters dash in and

Leah Charney portrays the wives of both Jacob and Jack, pointing out that both men essentially married the same girl. She brings just a hint of resigned acceptance to the role of Leah Sherminsky – knowing of her husband’s many infidelities – and a contemporary fire to the role of Jack’s wife Lisa. Richard Hoffman doubles as Jacob’s tenacious agent and Jack’s vigilant stage manager, Abe.

Daniel Staseff portrays the first generation’s efficient and eager-to-please stage manager taking a different approach to each personality he meets. Staseff also appears in the contemporary scenes as Moishe, a young ambitious performer anxious to make a good impression. In this latter role he has some particularly fine scenes with Nicole Marie McCafferty as Robin, the nervous ingénue. McCafferty also appears as Rachel, the object of Jacob’s attempted conquest in the earlier scenes. The actress finds similarities in the roles that help her establish and maintain the two very different characters. Gloria Valentine in the role of Esther provides the story with the missing link that connects the two generations. Her sparkling performance

as the stage mother Hannah in the earlier scenes is full of delicious little touches that light up the stage. Ari Weisberg has worked with the cast and crew, particularly lighting designer Sylvia Farr, to ensure the split-second timings and costume changes are executed with military precision. You do have to pay attention but it proves worthwhile as the comedy builds to a riotous conclusion. Toronto home sales decline in February Greater Toronto Area (GTA) realtors reported 5,759 sales through the TorontoMLS system in February 2013 – a decline of 15 per cent in comparison to February 2012. It should be noted that 2012 was a leap year with one extra day in February. A 28 day yearover-year sales comparison resulted in a lesser decline of 10.5 per cent. The average selling price for February 2013 was $510,580 – up two per cent in comparison to February 2012. “The share of sales and dollar volume accounted for by luxury detached homes in the City of Toronto was lower this February compared to last. This contributed to a more modest pace of overall average price growth for the GTA as a whole,” says Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) President Ann Hannah. “Stricter mortgage lending guidelines that precluded government backed mortgages on homes sold for over one million dollars and the City of Toronto’s additional upfront land transfer tax arguably played a role in the slower pace of luxury detached home sales.”

Po l i c e s p o k e s p e r s o n Const. Hugh Smith said he and his team distributed brochures and reflective key tags to approximately 4,000 GO Transit commuters as part of the Do the Bright Thing awareness campaign that launched Monday at Union Station. The one-week campaign encourages pedestrians to wear bright or reflective clothing to increase their visibility in busy traffic areas.
