York Cemetery donates 13 acres to the city for creation of park

Local councillor suggests forming a working group to hammer out details for park plans

To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday next year, 13 acres of York Cemetery will be donated to the City of Toronto for the creation of a nature park. The donation, made by Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries, the parent company that owns York Cemetery, will see the very west end of the 172-acre property, located near Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue, officially turn into a

park. The area currently boasts walking and biking trails, which will remain or will be enhanced. Of the 13 donated acres, about six acres are zoned protective natural forest lands and are undeveloped, while the remaining seven acres are zoned to allow for burials, but no buildings. was not working with anyone else or “in concert” with any organization. Saunders made the comments at a press conference

Tuesday at police headquarters. Ayanle Hassan Ali, 27, is facing a number of charges. Saunders said he is a Canadian

citizen who was born in Montreal and has been living in Toronto since 2011. “He has been unresponsive to any questions,” Saunders said of Ali. The chief said the investigation is still in its early stages.

St. Jane students raise more than $1,400 to bring clean water to Nicaragua fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Deafening cheers filled the gymnasium of St. Jane Frances Catholic School last Friday as students cheered on their peers during a volleyball tournament against teachers to raise funds for charity. Students donated $2 each to watch the day-long tournament, which raised money for We Create Change, an initiative of WE Day, a yearlong program encouraging young people to make a difference in the global community. Last year, St. Jane students raised more than $1,400 for We Create Change, and this year it looks like donations will be higher, said teacher Angela Frydrych. “It’s amazing,” she said of the tournament, adding funds raised will benefit clean water initiatives in Nicaragua. The Grade 8 teacher, who acted as referee during the volleyball tournament, said the Jane Street and Sheppard Avenue school participates in several fundraisers throughout the year, and the volleyball tournament always generates

a boisterous crowd. “For a school that doesn’t have much, they give with their hearts,” she said, adding their We Create Change fundraiser has benefitted Haiti in the past. Like she did last year, Thuy Nguyen was taking part in this year’s volleyball tournament. “I feel this is important because some people in the world don’t have water and as a community we should all help out,” said the Grade 8 student. Fellow Grade 8 student Kashiah Graham-Davidson agreed. “Some kids in other countries drink dirty water,” she said of why the fundraiser was important. Since We Create Change started in 2012, more than $3.3 million has been raised through the initiative. This year, the campaign is supporting, among other things, education, clean water and sanitation, health, agriculture and food security.

The Grade 8 Valley Park Middle School student was one of 20 teens taking part in the week-long Fredric Roberts Photography Workshop at the Aga Khan Museum, and when The Mirror stopped by, the budding photographers were busy snapping pictures of people and architecture inside the impressive Wynford Drive building. The workshop, run by award-winning photographer and philanthropist Fredric Roberts, saw 20 students from disadvantaged communities in North York, East York, Scarborough, and Richmond Hill learn a crash course in photography and photojournalism. An exhibit of the students’ work will be displayed during a workshop graduation ceremony at the museum Saturday, March 19, followed by a second exhibit at the nearby Ismaili Centre April 30 to May 31 which will combine curated photos from these students with photographs taken from other Fredric Roberts workshops at Aga Khan locations overseas. The exhibit will be featured in this year’s Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. “I never knew anything about photography,” Ilhaan told The Mirror Tuesday while taking photos for a living museum assignment by Roberts. “I never knew how a camera works. Now I’m learning about settings, depth of field, shutter speed, panning.” The 13-year-old’s favourite things to photograph at the museum included architecture and up-close shots of plants. “They look pretty good,” he said, adding he could

see photography becoming a hobby but not something to pursue professionally. Fellow Valley Park student Alim Kutchhi admitted it took some time to get used to how the Canon camera worked.

“I’m trying to take the best pictures I can,” said the 14-year-old. This marked the first time Roberts has brought his workshop to Canada, which has been held in various third-world countries such as India, Bhutan, Nicaragua, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan for youth between ages 14 and 16. At the end of each workshop Roberts conducts, a donation of several cameras and editing software is made to the non-governmental organizations that he partners with for the workshops. Los Angeles based Roberts, who founded the Fredric Roberts Photography Workshops in 2011 after retir-

ing from the financial world in 2000, said his teachings are designed as empowerment classes. “We take 20 kids who have never before touched a camera and we change their life,” he said. “We only work with NGO partners around the world and we pay for everything. We come in with 24 cameras and four computers and leave four cameras with the NGOs and two (software instillation programs). Then one to two years later we come back to the same group and do a three-day intensive advance class, and half those students become teaching assistants for the next round of students.” Roberts, a former Wall Street executive and head of the NASD (which used to own and operate the Nasdaq Stock Market), left investment banking after becoming disillusioned with the greed that appeared to consume those in his field of work. His journey into photography began with a six-week 1986 vacation to China, Tibet, and Thailand, when he didn’t even know how to install the battery into his newly purchased camera. He returned home and showed his photos to some

friends, who encouraged Roberts to take a weekend photography course at UCLA run by a pair of National Geographic photographers, who were impressed with his shots. He went home and put his photos in a closet, where they remained for 14 years until his retirement. They were dusted off postretirement when a friend made a passing remark about them. This time, after attending a workshop in Santa Fe, Roberts decided to focus his energy on his newfound calling – photography. After several years of solo exhibits, the Yale University graduate switched gears to focus on photography workshops with teenagers from third world countries. Jovanna Scorsone, education manager at the Aga Khan Museum, said students are learning to tell stories using the camera as a tool. “I am hoping they are able to look at the world differently and see moments we take for granted,” she said, adding 70 per cent of the students taking part in the museum workshop are Afghani refugees. “Fredric has great love for what he’s bringing to these kids. For him it’s not just a program, it’s personal.”

Toronto Board of Health proposal to open safe injection sites for drug users in three neighbourhoods is bound to make many residents uncomfortable, but it is the right thing to do. Put quite simply, these sites will save lives and make our entire city safer. That being said, if you live in Parkdale, South Riverdale or Yonge/Dundas area you are rightly feeling some concern. Residents will be asking themselves if safety in the area will be compromised, are they at risk of being flooded with heroin and fentanyl addicts looking to shoot up? our view The answer is: ‘No’. The call for the safe injection sites has been made in response to a growing Attend number of deaths related to meetings, overdoses during the past decade in Toronto. Those numbers are learn more up 41 per cent from a decade earlier, and in the year 2013 a shocking 206 people died after injecting drugs. In the face of those numbers, to do nothing would be both irresponsible and immoral on the part of the health department and our city’s leaders. “All lives are important, and nurse-supervised safe injection sites save lives,” said Angela Robertson, executive director of the Queen West-Central Toronto Community Health Centre in Parkdale – one of the proposed safe-injection sites. The South Riverdale CHC and a Toronto Public Health office known as The Works near Yonge and Dundas are also proposed safe injection sites. All three facilities already offer safe injection kits and have experience. They were identified as the best spots for the safe injection sites since they have the busiest needle exchanges in the city. Their staff say the existing services prevent the spread of hepatitis C and HIV among drug users. But more still needs to be done. Many addicts visiting these centres are homeless, and since they often use quickly and in public, most often alone, they are at high risk of a lethal overdose. Providing a safe place for them to do this lessens the chance of death or disease. The board of health will offer further recommendations on the safe injection sites this summer, once community meetings are held in the identified areas. We encourage local residents to take part in those meetings and learn the facts about this proposal.
