A 3D short made with participation from Seneca College’s Animation Arts Centre won best animated short at the Canadian Screen Awards. Oscar-winning director Chris Landreth took home the prize March 9 for his 11-minute 3D short, Subconscious Password. This was the latest of several honours for the short, which include the Annecy Cristal Award for best short film at its world premiere in June at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. For Subconscious Password, Landreth teamed up once again with producer Marcy Page of the National Film Board of Canada, producer Mark Smith of Copperheart Entertainment, and faculty
and students from Seneca College, who collaborated with him to make Ryan, which won the 2004 Academy Award for best animated short film. “Seneca students have been involved in animating the last three films I’ve done with the National Film Board,” Landreth said in a release. “It was completely natural to work with Seneca again on this project and it’s invigorating to work with such talented and up-andcoming animators. The students were more professional than many of the professionals I know.” More than 15 graduating students were given the chance to work on Subconscious Password, with support from five faculty members, as part
of the Animation Arts Centre’s Summer Animation Institute in 2012. After graduating, many of them were hired to work on the project until it was completed last February. “We’re thrilled that Subconscious Password has won a Canadian Screen Award and we are very proud of Seneca’s contribution to the film,” Mark Jones, Seneca’s chair of Creative Arts and Animation, said in a release. Several Seneca visual effects for film and television professors and graduates also worked on the television series Vikings, which won a Canadian Screen Award for best visual effects.

North York’s Danelle Im eyes 2018 Olympics David Grossman nym@insidetoronto.com You won’t find her winning a scoring championship or signing autographs, but Danelle Im has something very special going her way right now. And the North York native can send along her gratitude to older siblings Justin and Chris for their role in getting her actively involved in playing hockey. Im, whose home is in the Yonge and Finch area, but is now finishing a third year of kinesiology studies at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, might very well be competing at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. For Im, she could be wearing the national uniform of Korea – where her parents were born. Some might think it’s a bit to soon for Im to be getting excited, but there is evidence that Korea is more than interested. “I look at it as an opportunity and know that Korea has a developing team – and they might think I can help,” said Im, a graduate of Willowdale Christian School before choosing to take public transit and attend North Toronto Collegiate. “Seems like they are
interested in me, nothing is confirmed just yet, but I’ll just wait for now. When I look at the scenario, it’s pretty amazing for me – and an honour to be considered.” Ranked 24th in the world, Korea has never qualified for the Olympics. With the big event coming to Korea, the country has a chance to plan for the future – and Im might be designated as one of those building blocks. Im, who is 21 years, was invited to South Korea last summer, as a guest of the Korean Ice Hockey Association, to skate with the national team. They picked up the costs and liked what they saw of her play. While she may not be a prolific goal scorer, the speedy and gifted winger has potted some big goals – including the one with 8:43 gone in the second period – that turned out to be all Laurier needed to win the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women’s title and a berth in the national playoffs in Fredericton. Im has played on two OUA championship teams in her two years at Laurier and is also the recipient of an All-Canadian academic award.

A
n hour of darkness. That’s what the annual Earth Hour event calls for, this year on Saturday, March 29 between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Organized by the World Wildlife Fund, the event encourages residents and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol of support for the planet. It is a worldwide event that, according to organizers, has participation from more than 7,000 cities and towns in 154 countries worldwide. But the concept isn’t front of mind for all Torontonians. In the city last year, according to Toronto Hydro, there was a seven per cent reduction in energy use. In 2009, the city a 15 per cent reducour view experienced tion in energy use. So what’s hapConservation pening? For symbolism to have strength, there needs to be measurable needs to be momentum. There has to be front-of-mind growth. If there isn’t, the impact of the overall message – however powerful it may be – is blunted. One way of ensuring that momentum takes place is seeing new and interesting ways of integrating the event into community life. We’re encouraged, for example, that some pockets of the community build a neighbourhood gathering around Earth Hour. Last year, there was an outdoor concert in Roncesvalles Village. This year, in Etobicoke, there’s a concert at Islington United Church celebrating the 20th anniversary of the church’s organ. In North York, the Yonge-Sheppard neighbourhood will once again have its annual Earth Hour community walk. It’s a fine idea to consider joining a local Earth Hour event. So, too, is using our creativity to come up with our own localized Earth Hour events. Either way, you have people getting together, united in a common cause. Everyone can appreciate the environmental and cost benefits of saving energy. It’s great that Earth Hour can help bring that message to the forefront. Ideally, respect for the environment and energy conservation is a constant, front-of-mind proposition – not just for one hour in a year. For some, Earth Hour is a place to start. For others it’s one simple activity in an ever-mindful drive to preserve the environment.

Extreme weather idiom alert issued
F
irst off, I’d like to offer a belated congratulations to the King of the Jungle for living up to his end of the bargain. March most definitely came in like the proverbial lion. Kudos, big guy. I knew I could count on you. Ah, but will I be able to say the same to your sheepish animal kingdom counterpart less than two weeks from now? That’s the topic for today. The $64,000 question is: will March stay true to its well-known weather idiom by going out like a lamb? The jury is still out on that. When I say jury, there are only two of us on it at the moment – Ted and I. And truth to be told, the value of the question we’re pondering is quite a bit less. It’s 20 cents. We have a whole Timbit riding on the outcome.
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY I say yes, It will go out like a lamb. Ted says no chance, it’s gonna go out the same way it came in, with a mighty roar. As an aside, we also have a side bet of another Timbit on the actual cost of a Timbit. He says it can’t possibly be 20 cents. He figures it’s a lot less than that. Likely closer to a nickel. He also says nobody in their right mind would buy just one. I told him I’ve purchased one Timbit plenty of times. To which he responded, “I rest my case.” But back to the matter at hand. It’s still early, but I’d have to begrudgingly admit Ted’s looking pretty good right now. In the
prediction department, that is. As for braving the elements department? Not so much, I’m afraid. Ted says unashamedly, that when it comes to weather, he’s a fairweather fan. What’s more, by declaring that he’s a fair-weather weather fan he says it isn’t just cold weather he detests. He says he doesn’t care for fair weather either. He likes one and only one kind of weather: hot, hot, hot. I told him nobody in their right mind would offer that ridiculous kind of definition. He told me he does it routinely. To which I responded, “I rest MY case.” How the heck two jury members are able to rest their cases during a trial is a column for another day. The point is Ted’s convinced that this unseasonably long cold spell is proof that it isn’t going to end for quite some time,
which is what precipitated our wager. He’s far from alone. It seems everybody you bump into is grumbling that we’ll probably still have winter in May. So...over to you lambs. The ball is in your court. Hey, I know you’re really up against it this March. This lion has been on his game, no doubt about it. I say it’s time to show him who’s boss. And to prove I believe in you, I’m going put my money where my mouth is. Not only will I give you the two Timbits I’m going to win from Ted, I’ll splurge for a Tim Hortons muffin, too. Your favourite – baaaaanaaaaana nut. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. House fire postpones 60th anniversary celebrations for North York couple Damage from blaze estimated at $50,000 ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
Rosa Siciliano was planning to celebrate her grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary last Thursday evening, but a fire at the couple’s North York home that afternoon cancelled the celebration. “We’re just trying to get stuff sorted out to see what’s savable in the house right now,” Siciliano said. “Seeing
my grandfather’s bike all covered in black, burnt up. That was his trademark... Everybody in the area knows him by his bike.” Fire crews were called to the home, on Playfair Avenue near Lawrence Avenue and Dufferin Street, at 4:38 p.m. Capt. Mike Strapko said flames were visible when firefighters arrived. “The fire was contained to the garage and an adjoining storage shed,” he said, adding there were reports that the homeowner was inside the garage though he was later found outside. The 88-year-old was taken
to hospital for treatment of minor burns and smoke inhalation. His wife was taken to hospital for treatment of shock. Both remained in hospital Friday. “It seems that they’re going to be fine, aside from the fact that they don’t really have any place to live,” Siciliano said Friday afternoon. “I just spoke with my grandmother and she’s just distraught, but health-wise she’s OK.” Another party will be planned to celebrate the couple’s wedding anniversary. “We definitely want to

do something for them. I mean, it’s 60 years,” Siciliano said. A dozen fire trucks and 45 firefighters were at the scene of the two-alarm blaze. “The main body of the fire was knocked down at 4:59 p.m.,” Strapko said. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined. “The firefighters and the police are trying to figure that out,” Siciliano said. “We think it was either electrical or due to a light-bulb break.” Strapko said that damage is estimated at $50,000 and that there were working smoke alarms in the home.

oronto’s community development and recreation committee has approved a new way to designate priority neighbourhoods – one that will shift resources through communities across the city. The policy change must still be approved by Toronto Council
when it meets in April. But if it goes ahead, it will mean that the total number of those neighbourhoods will increase to 31 from the current 22. The new neighbourhoods are eligible for additional programs and capital funding based on a new metric, called a “Neighbourhood Equity Score.”

The province is proposing a Games Route Network (GRN) for the upcoming 2015 Pan Am Games.
The plan will be incorporated in the Games’ overall transportation budget, estimated to be $75-90 million, and will also require the completion of the Union Pearson Express air rail link which promises express travel between Pearson International Airport and Union Station. Metrolinx is building the project on behalf of the province and has stated repeatedly it will be completed before the Games scheduled start in July of 2015. The plan, which was posted online, also calls for some road closures and parking restrictions, as well as turn restrictions at certain points

along the GRN during the Games for road races and other street events. In addition, Games attendees will be able to use their admission tickets to ride GO Transit and TTC as well as other local transit agencies without paying an additional fare. Complicating matters, particularly within the Toronto city limits, are ongoing construction activities such as the Union Station revitalization as well as regular congestion affecting roadways and the subway system. The plan estimates some 1.4 million spectators will visit Toronto and surrounding areas for the games as well as 23,000 organizers, coaches and athletes. Following the announcement opponents of the plan, including the Ontario Conservatives, warned the measures would create “traffic chaos” and prevent local residents from attending the Games. The 2015 Pan Am Games are scheduled to run from July 10 to 26 followed by the Parapan Games from Aug. 7 to 15. For more information visit www.toronto2015.org

Raitt mum on federal transportation funding at TRBOT RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Rail safety and trade were top of mind during Lisa Raitt’s speech to the Toronto Region Board of Trade (TRBOT) Tuesday afternoon. During her approximately 30-minute address, the federal transportation minister – who was appointed to her current post just nine days after the July 2013 Lac-Megantic rail tragedy – spoke extensively about ensuring safe and reliable transportation of combustible materials such as fuel whether by rail, pipeline or ship. “We want to have world-class safety systems for all of those forms, because we have to make sure we have that social licence to deliver the goods in the best way we can,” said Raitt to a packed ballroom of business and transportation professionals inside the Sheraton Centre hotel. Raitt also spoke of free trade agreements Canada has signed with the European Union and more recently South Korea, saying Ontario specifically would benefit from the agreements. Premier Kathleen Wynne as well as major automobile manufacturers like Ford with a strong base in the province have already spoken out against the South Korean deal, saying it will jeopardize thousands of automotive jobs. Raitt countered those criticisms by insisting it would remove around 98 per cent of all tariffs in place currently between Canada and South Korea, thereby creating new export opportunities for Ontario businesses, which she said averaged around $550 million per year in exports to the country between 2010 and 2012. “Once this agreement comes into force, tariffs will be eliminated on almost all of Canada and Ontario’s key exports in particular,” she said. Raitt spent only a few minutes speaking about new transportation investments, such as new bridge planned along the Detroit River connecting Detroit and Windsor, and another in Montreal announced as part of this year’s fiscal budget. She also trumpeted the Harper government’s project-by-project investment in local infrastructure improvements such as the Union Station renovations – of which the federal government has committed $133 million to the estimated $800 million budget – plus gas tax revenue allocations which have transferred nearly one billion dollars since 2006 to TTC capital projects. But Raitt remained mum about the likelihood of future federal gov-
ernment funding for Toronto-area aspirations such as the Relief Subway line, telling reporters after her speech any such decisions were not part of her minister’s portfolio and would be left to local politicians. “I certainly know transit is incredibly important to the GTA, but the
specifics of what will be built is something left to the local needs to figure out and then talk to us in terms of what funding is available,” she said. She also mentioned sitting with Toronto Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly during today’s event, but that fund-
ing discussions did not come up as a topic of discussion. For his part, Kelly refused to criticize the minister for not speaking enough about Toronto’s transportation needs during her speech. “You never think other orders of government say enough or give York Cemetery and Visitation Centre is a business name of Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries. This week the province introduced tough penalties for drivers caught operating a mobile device while driving. Announced by Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray on Monday, the measures are part of a proposed amendment of the provincial Highway Traffic Act intended to improve road safety in the province and curb distracted driving, which kills almost as many people annually as impaired driving. If the bill is passed, fines for distracted driving would increase to a maximum of $1,000 as well as tack on an additional penalty of three demerit points. The proposed bill also increases penalties for “dooring” – when a driver opens a car door in the path of an oncoming cyclist – and requires automobiles to keep one metre apart while passing cyclists. Cyclists would also face a penalty of up to $500 for not having lights or some kind of reflector.
TO in TRANSIT Regardless if the measures are passed, fines for distracted driving officially increased to $280 as of Tuesday. something to celebrate wToronto:
If a new rating system tracking convenience of accessing public transit is to be believed, Toronto is number one in the country. Walk Score, an American company best known for rating municipalities and neighbourhoods based on their walkability, released its first-ever scores for transit access. It gives the city a score of 78, one higher than Montreal. “Toronto has great transit – a subway system, streetcars, extensive bus service, and GO Transit rail lines serving the outer suburbs,” reads Walk Score’s entry for the city. The rating finds downtown areas such the Bay Street Corridor are the best

The I Ski NY bus service kicks off next season, and will offer trips from Toronto to six ski mountains. Few details about how the service will operate in Toronto are known, but New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press release the intention of the initiative is to promote ski attractions in the state to locals and out-of-towners alike. For more information, visit www.iskiny.com Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

A taxing question from the fringe Mayoral races are a long haul in Toronto – and that leaves plenty of room for little epiphanies. On Monday, one of those showed up to file papers at city hall – Ari Goldkind, a 40-yearold criminal defence lawyer. He made some headlines saying that he has a nose for B.S. and referring to the current mayor as Sideshow Rob. If past experience is any indication, an ambitious but untested outsider like Goldkind will go exactly nowhere in this race. He is a fringe candidate. But it’s rude not to ask what ideas even a fringe candidate brings to the table, and so that’s what I did. He started out sounding a bit like David Soknacki and Olivia Chow, advocating a return to the LRT in Scarborough over the council-approved subway. Then he kind of sounded like Soknacki on the land transfer tax, but it turned out I’d misunderstood when I thought he said exemptions to the tax should go to lowerpriced houses and purchasers of homes worth more than $1.1 million should pay more.
What Goldkind actually wanted to see was the land transfer tax increased on million-dollar homes, and everybody else pay the same. That, along with higher property taxes, would pay for repairs and improvements of Toronto’s public housing. Goldkind may throw around words like B.S. pretty freely, but for him, and really only him, taxes are not a dirty word. After we spoke, it struck me: higher taxes shouldn’t be a de facto taboo, as they’ve become. Because while Goldkind might not have a hope at winning the election, if he actually pulled it off, his program of tax-and-spend government would probably make life a lot better here and drive almost no one from their homes. Taxes are low in Toronto – lower than elsewhere – and yet services are slipping. According to this year’s Ombudsman’s Annual Report, even basic customer service
isn’t sustainable. As this year’s budget debate wrapped up, city manager Joe Pennachetti said property taxes will practically have to rise more dramatically in coming years than they have in the past, just to maintain status quo. Toronto is circling the drain. And yet, the collection of miserly landholders that make up Toronto will almost certainly shuffle out and cast their vote for one of five or so A-list mayoralty candidates with well-known resumes and no stomach for pitching the larger-scale tax hikes the city needs to pull out of its spin. Now, I can’t say anybody should go to vote for the unknown criminal defence lawyer who just joined the long list of fringe mayoralty candidates. But maybe it’s time we shook our heads, and stopped believing we can have a great or even decent future, paying only a little more than we did in the past.
