Family caregivers get support at May 14 Caregiver Show Simply put – family caregivers need support.

That’s the reason for the upcoming The Caregiver Show, a free event May 14 at the Direct Energy Centre.

Produced by Metroland Media Toronto and conceived in partnership with Downsizing Divas, the show will provide a relaxing day for caregivers, giving them access to caregiving resources, providing the opportunity to meet other caregivers in similar circumstances, and to receive a little pampering.

Some eight million Canadians are family caregivers. A caregiver is anyone who provides care to a loved one or friend with acute, chronic problem or aging issues. A caregiver can be a wife, husband, sister, brother, daughter, son, uncle, aunt, mother, father, grandchild or caring neighbour.

Awards recognize 911 dispatchers who went above and beyond the call FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Dispatcher Joanna Jenkins has no interest in knowing whether the 911 call she took a year ago from a distraught 10-year-old girl ended up being the murder of her father at the hands of her mother.

“I don’t want to know the outcome of the call,” said the somewhat reluctant recipient of one of three Emergency Communicator of the Year awards handed out at Toronto Emergency Services headquarters near Dufferin Street and Finch Avenue last month.

The awards, now in their third year, honour one EMS, one fire, and one police dispatcher in recognition of their top communicators who went above and beyond when handling 911 calls.

The awards were presented during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, which ran April 13 to 19.

who said there was blood and needed an ambulance at her North York home. Through questioning the child, who fluctuated between calm and

hysteria, Jenkins realized the girl thought her mother had killed her father.

Jessica Norquay admitted she was a little out of her com-

fort zone when she was recognized for handling more than 500 calls over two days during the December ice storm, which included three two-alarm fires,

a firefighter mayday incident and the evacuation of a North York seniors residence to a warming centre.

“I was told April 1st and I thought it was an April Fool’s joke,” she said of her award.

“I’m a little uncomfortable.

I think all three agencies were busy that night. I think everyone who worked that weekend deserves recognition.”

Norm Rivera wasn’t recognized for any one particular call or situation, but rather for his overall calm professionalism on the job, which has included taking calls for the recent ice storm, the Sunrise Propane explosion in August 2008, and assisting with the delivery of a baby girl.

The parents of the baby Rivera delivered were so impressed with his assistance they requested a copy of the 911 recording of the call.

“It’s humbling and quite flattering,” he said.

“But being singled out is tough. Everyone does a great job.”

by Finance Minister Charles Sousa last Thursday, had winners – construction companies, commuters, low income employees – along with its fair share of losers, such as high income earners, airlines, and smokers, a financial analyst

told an area Rotary Club postbudget breakfast Friday.

But shortly after the meeting wrapped up, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath announced her party would not be supporting the budget, triggering what has now become a June 12 election and essentially making the budget tabled by the minority Liberals their campaign platform.

“It’s a spending party, as I put it,” Fred Cassano, senior manager of tax service with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, said of the $130.4-billion spending plan to an intimate crowd at Bayview

Highlights include: w A 12.5-billion deficit, up from a forecasted $10 billiondeficit. w Increasing taxes for individuals with taxable incomes over $150,000 and for large, Canadian-controlled private corporations. w Requiring employers and employees that do not already participate in a comparable pension plan to each contribute up to about $1,700 annually to the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP), starting

in 2017. w $29 billion over 10 years for transportation infrastructure and public transit. w Upping the Ontario Child Benefit from $1,210 a year per child to $1,310. w Investing $11 billion to repair and build elementary and secondary schools over the next 10 years. w $11.4 billion in spending for new and redeveloped hospitals over the next 10 years.

Other measures include a four per cent raise in aviation fuel tax to help pay for transit projects; increasing tobacco tax from $24 to $27.95

per carton of 200 cigarettes; reviewing many business support programs, including tax credits, grants, and other direct support programs to see if they are working; and introducing a general anti-avoidance rule for land transfer tax.

“It’s not a big budget, but it’s a significant budget,” Cassano said.

The breakfast was sponsored by a number of Rotary Clubs including North York, Markham Sunrise, MarkhamUnionville, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, TorontoDon Mills, Willowdale and Woodbridge.

Learn about plans for Eglinton Meeting Monday in North York The City of Toronto is hosting two public meetings for implementing the Eglinton Connects Planning Study in regards to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. Over the last two years, the city conducted the study to determine the future land use planning framework and public realm plan for Eglinton Avenue, between Jane Street and Kennedy Road, to intensify, beautify and improve mobility along the street. Staff will now consult the public on specific implementation measures to make the plan a reality.

The study area corresponds to the area where Metrolinx is currently building the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, scheduled to open in 2020.

The first meeting will be held Monday, May 12 at the Ontario Science Centre, 770 Don Mills Rd., from 6 to 9 p.m. The second meeting will be held Thursday, May 15 at Beth Sholom Synagogue, 1445 Eglinton Ave. W., from 6 to 9 p.m. A comprehensive presentation of implementation measures will take place at each meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Following the consultation process, staff will report back to the Planning and Growth Management Committee in June with the Official Plan and zoning bylaw amendments, and the further studies needed to complete the plan.

Co-ordinate social agencies To the editor: It has been reported that a social agency in York SouthWeston called For Youth Initiative (FYI) has received a half million dollars from the federal government’s Department of Justice.

Minister Peter Mackay visited this agency and made this announcement.

I have no problem with any social agency in York South-Weston receiving funding that comes from our hard earned tax dollars, but I must insist there be some kind of accountability as to how these funds are spent.

York South-Weston has many social agencies operating here that are receiving funding. My concern is that they don’t co-ordinate with each other and sometimes these agencies offer the same programs and services.

By co-ordinating, they would be able to offer different and unique programs.

Pride of Israel Synagogue hosts Jewish Music Week concert

or the second year in a row, a North York synagogue is hosting one of the main events for Jewish Music Week in Toronto.

Now in its fourth year, the festival is set to run May 18 to 24 at various venues in the city and Greater Toronto Area and will include a mix of Sephardic, klezmer, Israeli pop, Broadway, Yiddish theatre, jazz, big band, cantorial, folk and gospel music.

The Pride of Israel Synagogue, 59 Lissom Cr., will host a gala evening concert Monday, May 19 featuring Moroccan singer Aaron Bensoussan and Friends, who will bring his blend of Middle Eastern, jazz, flamenco and rock music to the Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue synagogue at 7:30 p.m.

“We are expecting a large

turnout,” said Pride of Israel member Larry Arshoff, who sits on the synagogue’s Jewish Music Week in Toronto committee.

The synagogue hosted Rocky Mountain Jewgrass for last year’s festival, drawing about 200 people, he said.

“Last year was more rock,” Arshoff said. “This year it’s a combination of Middle Eastern, pop, jazz, flamenco. It’s not a religious concert by any means.”

Bensoussan will perform songs from his latest CD, A New Journey, along with classic Moroccan poems, ancient Judeo-Spanish melodies and Israeli favourites.

He will be joined by world/jazz musician Shai Bachar, bass player Waleed Abdulhamid, Erie Tollar on flute/ney/sax, Demterios Petslakis on guitar and oud, and Naghmeh Farahmand on percus-

Jewish Music Week in Toronto was supposed to be a one-time deal when Aliza Spiro came up with the idea in 2011 to coincide with the international convention of the Cantors Assembly, which was held in Toronto that year.

“The response was overwhelming,” she said.

“Last year we outgrew almost all of our venues. We have so many (musicians) interested for 2015 we could have a Jewish music month.”

Spiro, whose husband, Simon, is an award-winning songwriter and senior cantor at Beth Tzedec Congregation, said the festival’s highlight will be when The Kids From Brooklyn take to the stage May 21 at Toronto Centre for the Arts. The group, along with Spiro’s husband and a 20-piece orchestra, will perform Carole King, Neil Diamond, Neil Ave. Free ◗ A Swingin’ Afternoon!

As for those who might think Jewish Music Week in Toronto is only geared towards people of the Jewish faith, Spiro is quick to dismiss the notion.

“We had a concert at Mel Lastman Square and it was packed with every type of person you could imagine,”

she said. “It’s just wonderful to see how music brings everyone together.”

Other events for the festival in North York include Ventanas May 22 at Bernard Betel Centre for Creative Living; and Baroque and Beyond May 23 at Barbara Frum Library.

Friends to honour Terry Trafford with tournament fundraiser Ball hockey tribute has raised more than $2,000 CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com It started as a plan to organize a ball hockey charity game to raise a few hundred dollars in memory of their friend Terry Trafford who tragically took his own life earlier this year.

But the fundraising event to be held on Sunday, organized by Oliver Drigo and a couple of his friends, has grown to become something much bigger.

“It’s really a national community,” said Drigo, of the support they’ve received to date from not just local residents but the greater hockey community as well from Mississauga and Niagara to Kitchener and Michigan.

The tragic death of Trafford, the 20-year-old OHL player from Weston

whose body was found about a week after he was cut from the Saginaw Spirit team, received national news coverage.

An autopsy determined Trafford died of self-inflicted asphyxiation.

After hearing what had happened, Drigo and his friends wanted to do something to celebrate Trafford’s life while raising money for Kids Help Phone to help address the issue of depression and suicide among youth and young adults.

“I grew up with him,” said Drigo, adding they attended Weston Memorial Junior Public School together when they were in the primary grades. “And I played a bit of hockey with him.”

As they began to plan the event, Drigo said community groups, including the Weston Village Business

Improvement Area, helped to get the word out as well as York South-Weston dignitaries like Councillor Frances Nunziata and school board Trustee Chris Tonks.

They have surpassed their initial modest fundraising goal of $400 with nearly $2,200 donated online.

The hope is to raise even more when the charity ball hockey game along with a barbecue, raffle and silent auction, takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Weston Memorial Junior Public School, 200 John St., this Sunday.

“Hockey meant the world to Terry and we thought that this was the most fitting way for the community to give him his last send-off,” Drigo said.

Police issue public warning Obedience Club meeting following ‘indecent act’ Police have issued a public warning after a man followed a female jogger while performing an indecent act Monday.

Police said a woman was jogging along a pathway near Bayview Avenue and Pottery Road when a man “performing an indecent act” followed her, gesturing for her to speak with him, around 3 p.m. The man fled when the woman called police.

The suspect is 20 to 25 years old, about 5’9” tall with short brown hair, a thin build and a tanned complexion. Kelly’s mayoral role deserves praise

H

e won’t return your phone call personally. He doesn’t worry about his office budget. And he shows up early.

Sometimes, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly shows up very early. On Monday, he and Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam hosted a 9 a.m. news conference, to do something else that Mayor Rob Ford would never do: invite 200 LGBT couples to get married, for free, at Toronto’s Casa Loma.

Now that Mayor Ford has left city hall to look after his personal problems, Kelly is the de-facto mayor. The leave of absence funnels to Kelly the few powers left to Ford after council voted to isolate him in November. Kelly represents Toronto at official functions, acts as the head of the government in emergency and otherwise.

And he continues in his role of attempting to elevate the discussion at city hall, and restore dignity to the institution – a role in which Kelly has excelled.

I take the time to point

This past 12 months have seen the city dragged through the mud – from the moment that crack video started making the rounds, or maybe a short while before, when gossip about Mayor Ford’s substance troubles found their way from back-rooms to front pages.

Kelly stepped into the role of deputy mayor in the midst of it, taking over from Doug Holyday after he made his way to Queen’s Park. Kelly did so gamely – knowing there was trouble with the mayor, and hoping to provide quiet counsel to the mayor and his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, as the office unravelled.

A thankless job, but Kelly had the good grace to appear grateful for it. And when council put him in the sort-of top job, he managed to retain some grace even as he was clearly delighted to oblige.

months taking council’s pulse, nudging things along on issues he cares about, but otherwise taking a que-serasera approach to matters of municipal policy.

You would never run a campaign promising to be a mayor like Kelly. But it is actually a good lesson for future mayors, as they think about how to manage this city.

Norm Kelly’s geniality has led to a pretty productive council. It passed a decent budget, made a tough call on the future of the Billy Bishop Airport, and generally conducted its business as well as one might hope.

The next mayor might find him/herself needing some of Kelly’s low-key mojo. Given the city’s financial constraints, it will be difficult to make a mark with more than one or two big, city-building projects and still manage the books. The virtues of modesty, inclusiveness and compromise might be the main of what our future leaders require.

The results are in, and the name of a new waterfront street is Merchants’ Wharf.

The “main street” for the emerging East Bayfront residential development located on the water’s edge and connecting to Queen’s Quay, Merchants’ Wharf was one of 700 suggestions for a naming contest organized by Waterfront Toronto.

Submitted by Daniel Thompson, the name received nearly 40 per cent of some 2,200 votes cast during the online contest.

TORONTO PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES

The TTC wants to erect a 19-acre garage and maintenance facility to store 250 buses at the intersection of McNicoll Avenue and Kennedy Road, which it says will be needed within five years.

Last week the TTC board heard a presentation on the project that has some residents worried about worse road congestion and an uptick in diesel emissions in the area caused by increased bus traffic.

An open house on the project is Wednesday, May 14 at Kennedy Public School, 20 Elmfield Cr., from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

L a s t y e a r ’s P r o j e c t Kindness initiative came to light following the release of the 2011 student census by the TDSB, which noted 66 per cent of students in grades 9 to 12 said they felt stressed sometimes or all the time.

In an attempt to lower the numbers, the business management students decided to focus their project on the promotion and awareness of kindness.

“It was such a great success,” business management student Yasaman Mostafaie said of last year’s Project Kindness.

“At the end of the year, you could tell people were more comfortable. They made new friends and got to know each other better.

We asked students what we

should do this year and they wanted (Project Kindness) back.”

This year, money raised from the school’s fashion show tickets will go toward a TDSB program aimed at helping troubled young people get back on track academically.

And the Kindness Games will have an element of friendliness to it, said business management student Tyler Balaban. “ We’re going to have tug-of-war, but instead of

Another obstacle course will require one person to be blindfolded and follow verbal instructions from a teammate, which promotes trust, he said.

And for the past month or so, students have been wearing Project Kindness T-shirts on Fridays in advance of the week-long event, which have proven to be so popular more are being ordered, Mostafaie said, adding business management students have been handing out free pastries to bring awareness to Project Kindness.

“Rather than just taking the food, they are interested in why we are offering free food,” Balaban said.

Business management students are also working on a presentation focusing on mental health to share with fellow students, he said.

Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has commenced a study to address erosion and slope instability at high risk areas identified along Black Creek between 111 Whitburn Crescent and 2 Jennifer Court in the City of Toronto, following a severe storm event on July 8, 2013.

In general, the work contemplates stabilizing key sections of watercourse and valley slopes to provide long-term protection for essential structures such as infrastructure and houses along the study area.

Residents and other interested parties are invited to attend a public meeting to find out more about the study, provide feedback on solutions being considered, and to discuss next steps in the process. You will have the opportunity to speak with and ask questions of project staff, and provide your input.
