Havergal teen gets positive reaction at national science fair A North York student came home a big winner from the 2014 Canada Wide Science Fair with a $500 cash prize, multiple awards and six offers of university entrance scholarships. Better Living ambassadors rally behind relay Stroll, Roll and Run benefits long-term care facility at Don Mills and Lawrence FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Two residents of a long-term care facility are being honoured for their fundraising efforts that have helped benefit the place they call home. For the past several years, Gwen Hewitt and Linda Carney have asked pretty much everyone they come across if they would donate to Better Living at Thompson House, the Don Mills

said Hewitt, who has called Thompson House home for seven years. “I feel it’s important because I live here, I know what’s needed. The building is getting old and needs a lot of repairs. Our goal is to raise money for electric beds.” Hewitt’s fundraising goal is part of Better Living Charitable Foundation’s 17th annual Stroll, Roll and Run Relay, set to take place Sunday at 1 Overland Blvd. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Like the name suggests, participants can stroll, walk, roll on roller blades or wheelchairs, run or jog in an effort to match and exceed the $28,000 raised from last year’s event. Routes range from a one-kilometre Supporters Scenic Stroll or Roll, to a 10-km Champions Challenge Run, and a four-km Corporate and Community Relay. Registration is free, but participants are encouraged

to raise a minimum of $20 to cover event costs. Money raised will go towards critical mission needs set out by Better Living Charitable Foundation, although fundraising teams can request where their donations go – hence towards electric beds, like Hewitt’s team is doing.
