For three days, spectators can watch hockey players from Ontario and Korea take to the ice at Angela James Arena to practice and partake in an exhibition game.

But these aren’t your typical hockey players - they are sledge hockey players.

The Ontario Sledge Hockey Association and the Friends of Angela James Arena (FAJA) are hosting the free event Thursday, Nov. 24, Saturday, Nov. 26, and Monday, Nov. 28 at 165 Grenoble Dr. in Flemingdon Park.

The public can watch team practices Thursday and Monday from 7 to 9 p.m., with the main draw exhibition game Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.

This is a lead-up to December’s World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Prince Edward Island, featuring Korea, Norway, the U.S. and Canada. The U.S. beat Canada at

"The weather is set to turn, and we want to get drivers thinking about how to be best prepared and to stay safe in these conditions," CAA spokesperson Jeff LeMoine said.

"Changing your mindset so that you're more patient, leaving yourself more time and space on the road, all of those things will help to keep us all safe."

Police and CAA held a media event in Etobicoke Wednesday morning where officers used a special "skid car" to demonstrate techniques to get out of a skid.

"The easiest way to describe it is you steer where you want to go," Const. Clint Stibbe said.

"The reality is in some cases when you do that, you overcorrect and then

Snow could hit Toronto on Sunday, and police see a spike in collisions whenever there's a sudden

change in weather conditions.

Stibbe said motorist behaviour should also change by slower driving and no sudden braking.

"We depend so much on

our safety system in the cars. In some cases we're putting so much faith in them that we're overdriving the road conditions and the safety systems and essentially putting ourselves out of control."

LeMoine said vehicles should also be made ready for the winter.

"You want to make sure your lighting system is fully working," he said.

"Your windshield wipers should be functioning well because if you can't see through your windshield it's unsafe, and make sure your washer fluid is topped up, that your oil is in good standing."

LeMoine also suggests having a survival kit and an emergency roadside kit in vehicles.

The kits should include a snow brush, an ice scraper, a shovel, a first aid kit, extra clothing, a flashlight, extra windshield washer fluid along with food like granola bars and bottled water.

Having Kitty Litter is also a good idea.

Motorists urged to be prepared for winter weather "If your vehicle becomes stuck in a situation where the tires can't grip the surface of the road, sprinkling some Kitty Litter near the tires can sometimes help you gain just enough traction to get out of that situation," said LeMoine.

CAA also recommends having a set of four matching winter tires installed for better traction.

"They do make a large difference over all-season tires, and they can help reduce your stopping distance by up to 25 per cent," LeMoine said.

CAA offers these additional tips for winter driving: • Stay on main roads • Keep a phone charger in your car • Avoid using overdrive or cruise control • Slow down and move over for emergency vehicles • Never pass a snow plow on the right-hand side • Practice emergency braking to understand how your vehicle will react • Ensure your gas tank is always above half full

Use extra caution in winter, says long-time Toronto cyclist RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Cycle in the winter but take care to be safe and respectful of the road, urges a long-time cyclist.

Michael Cranwell from Gears Bike Shop wants more bike lanes in Toronto to encourage cycling yearround. Until that happens, he's hoping those who get by on two wheels take precautions to make themselves and others around them safe.

"Whether the rules are currently right or beneficial to a cyclist, they're the rules," said Cranwell, general man-

ager of Gears' Canary District location at 500 Front Street East, during a recent interview. "Until we change those, you still need to obey them.

You would not do what people do on a bicycle in a car."

Cranwell has pedalled for over 30 years. He says he's seen it all when it comes to poor cycling behaviour. While he's pleased to see more people riding longer into the year, he worries risk-taking will result in injury or worse.

In addition to building more bike lanes, he wants the provincial regulations amended to legalize the socalled Idaho Stop, named

after the U.S. state it was first enacted back in 1982. The rule allows cyclists to treat stop signs as yields, without coming to a full stop. The law allows cyclists to treat red lights as stop signs, stopping before proceeding through the intersection if it is safe to do so.

So far, the Idaho Stop is legal in several North American jurisdictions, and Edmonton lawmakers voted in September to request a change to provincial laws allowing for rolling stops.

With daylight at a premium in the colder months, he said cyclists need to be seen

from a long distance, and to differentiate from "visual distractions", particularly at dusk.

In addition to bike reflectors, he recommends reflective clothing, and has been testing a luminescent spray applied directly to clothes, or bikes, to make the material light-reflective for an extended period.

"If you make a mistake in a car you're probably scratching some paint," he said. "If you make a mistake as a cyclist there's a really good chance you're going to the hospital, or worse, home in a box."

Teaching money smarts in school is absolutely necessary

his year, for the first time, the total amount of household debt owed by Canadians surpassed the country’s entire gross domestic product (GDP).

And according to Statistics Canada, the gap between disposable household income and credit market debt is getting wider - meaning we’re just not making enough money to catch up to what we owe.

For people who are struggling to find financial balance, figuring it out often comes well after the problem’s already established. For younger generations, these trends indicate a critical need for them to get money smart before it’s too late.

Thanks to the Toronto Youth Cabinet (TYC), there’s good news on that front. Its members started a petition and successfully lobbied the province’s Ministry of Education to include dedicated financial literacy offerings in the high school curriculum.

The subject is currently touched upon in a variety of courses between Grades 4 and 12.

But it’s not enough, suggests TYC member Prakash Amarasooriya, who spoke to us about the campaign.

Teachers aren’t being trained properly and the opportunity for impactful learning is being missed.

“If students are aware how to use basic financial tools as well as how to think long-term early, you’ll create smarter citizens, which creates a stronger economy for the Province of Ontario,” he said.

Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter met with the TYC and has agreed to a curriculum review and adding the material to the mandatory Grade 10 career studies course.

The Bank of Canada warned this year that consumer debt is growing at a historic rate - due much in part to record-low interest rates - and that it will eventually become unsustainable. No doubt, the adult population suffering under the weight of this debt could have benefitted from mandatory financial literacy classes in school.

It’s not too late to give younger generations the skills needed to budget, manage debt, file taxes and purchase property. Kudos to the students that are taking action to make those lessons part of the high school experience.

But, as the TYC argues, those lessons need to carry enough weight to stick with them for the rest of their lives.

The broader student body may not currently realize what good their peers are doing for them, but once they start their careers, take on rent or mortgages and juggle bank accounts and credit cards, it’ll be come evidently clear.

Cycling culture pushing its way into suburbs Two bike hubs open up in Scarborough this year The year 2011 was a bad one for cycling in Toronto's suburbs.

Councillor Michelle Holland in Southwest Scarborough wiped out bike lanes on Pharmacy Avenue and Birchmount Road. Her residents, she said, called hundreds of times, demanding this.

The Rob Ford administration believed suburban cyclists wanted to ride on well-lit off-street trails, not busy city streets.

But that same year, councillors with wards atop the Scarborough Bluffs shelved extensions of the Waterfront Trail through three

Between 1996 and 2011, there was an "explosion" of cycling in Toronto's core - in some areas, 20 per cent of trips were now by bike - but cycling in outer areas had declined.

Cycling advocates, however, didn't give up on Scarborough or other sections of Toronto far from downtown where, unlike bike savvy neighbourhoods such as Trinity Bellwoods and Danforth Avenue, cyclists in traffic might still seem alien.

In 2016, they opened two bike hubs in Southwest Scarborough where, says Marvin Macaraig of Scarborough Cycles, riders shun wider roads for Birchmount, Pharmacy and Midland Avenue, where traffic volumes are lower.

It's not just a lack of bike lanes: Toronto's suburbs have few stores selling or repairing bikes (for all its size, Scarborough has just one).

A downtown innovation, hubs offer repair clinics, safety tips and group rides,

building confidence in cycling. "In this first year," Macaraig says "we have learned that there is a definite need and appetite for increased cycling programming in Scarborough."

Researching barriers to cycling in the suburbs, Beth Savan, a senior fellow at University of Toronto's Massey College, believes they can be overcome.

Drivers got used to cyclists downtown, she says, and it won't be rapid, but this "cultural shift" will happen in the suburbs, too.

If the city sticks to its plans, bike lanes are coming by 2025 to Midland in Scarborough, to Jane, Yonge and Bathurst streets in North York, and to Burnhamthorpe Road and Renforth Drive in Etobicoke.

Robotics program a hit with kids with disabilities

Sure, they’re just machines, but if you know a little math and engineering and computer programming, and can work as a team with other smart kids, you can make them do anything.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, a group of 20 children with disabilities at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital showed off just what they could make their robots do, in a new program presented by Holland Bloorview, and and FIRST® Robotics Canada.

The program, in this iteration for kids between 10 and 14 years old, is one of the biggest hits at the hospital according to president and CEO Julia Hanigsberg.

“Well robots are just fun-that’s the bottom line,” she said. “Kids learn best when they’re having fun, and the neat thing is that this takes science and technology and all that goes into robots, and combines it with teamwork, communication, building patience and all those things you need to do to be a good competitor. It puts it together and gives kids with disabilities a chance

to participate.”

The program sees young people using robotics kits made by Lego to learn how to build and program robots capable of simple - and sometimes not-so-simple - maneuvers and tasks.

“They can program it so it can do a certain route, along a mapped space,” said Hanigsberg. “They can program it when it reaches a certain spot, to sense that it’s hit that spot. Right now, because kids are kids, they’re mostly trying to destroy each others’ robots. They have names like Crusher 9000. I think you can tell just by their name what they intend for it.”

The program this year is the first after a successful pilot program in 2015. It was an immediate hit.

“I had parents say you have to keep the program going because my kid won’t let me register for anything else,” said Hanigsberg.

“For some of these kids, they’re not going to be on the sports team at school. They’re not going to be able to do the things their friends or siblings can do. And for some of their parents, it’s the first time they’ve seen their kids cross a stage to get a ribbon.”

Santa Claus Parade returns for 112th year Metroland file photo

Santa and his reindeers arrive for the 2015 holiday season during last year’s Santa Claus Parade.

With Christmas just over a month away, Santa Claus himself is set to make his yearly trip through the streets of downtown Toronto.

The 112th annual Santa Claus Parade is set to take place on Sunday, Nov. 20, with some 25 floats, more than 20 bands, dozens of celebrity clowns and, of course, the jolly old elf himself making their way from Christie Pits Park to St. Lawrence Market.

The parade will kick off at Christie Pits, making its way east along Bloor Street to Avenue Road, where it will start working its way south around Queen’s Park and onto University Avenue. A designated viewing area for those with physical disabilities has been set up at University Avenue and College Street.

The parade will continue south until Wellington Street, then head east to Jarvis Street and south to

St. Lawrence Market.

Hundreds of thousands typically come out to take in the parade, which has become a beloved Toronto tradition. Guests are advised to dress warmly and invited to buy a red nose for $2 to support the parade and the 180 Mosquito Air Cadets.

he Toronto Youth Cabinet wants to ensure everyone in Ontario graduates high school knowing how to budget, manage debt, file taxes and purchase property.

And the group, the official youth advisory board of the City of Toronto, has convinced Ontario’s Ministry of Education to make it happen.

“I think it’s something that a lot of youth have been talking about for a while, that they don’t feel that they are learning life skills in the current education system,” said Toronto Youth Cabinet (TYC) member Prakash Amarasooriya, who is representing the group’s initiative to have a clearly defined financial literacy component added to Ontario’s Grade 10 career studies course.

“If students are aware of how to use basic financial tools as well as how to think longterm early, I think you’ll create smarter citizens, which creates a stronger economy for the Province of Ontario.”

In October, the TYC started a petition asking the Province to make the change. According to the Ministry, financial literacy is already dispersed throughout various courses between Grades 4 and 12.

“I think there may be a disconnect between what is intended with the curriculum as well as what is actually being done at school,” Amarasooriya told Metroland Media Tuesday, Oct. 25, ahead of a meeting with Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter at Queen’s Park Tuesday, Nov. 1.

He believes the curriculum’s current references to financial literacy are too vague.

“We don’t think it’s being done as effectively as it can be,” he said. “Ideally, I think we wanted it to be incorporated in multiple courses, just like the government, but we wanted it to at least be in one specific course, because that way you can train teachers as well.

“Teachers have been complaining that they’re not being trained to teach this subject material. So if they don’t feel confident in it, they will not teach students well. And so if you put it into the Grade 10 careers course curriculum, you can train teachers to deliver

In a recent statement, recognizing November as financial literacy month, The Ministry of Education noted it has spent more than $3 million on financial literacy resources and professional learning opportunities for elementary and high school teachers since 2011.

Amarasooriya said incor-

porating the material into the Grade 10 career studies course makes sense because the course is mandatory, so all students would get the knowledge they need to succeed financially.

It also comes at a time when students are starting to use bank accounts and preparing to apply for student and car loans, and credit cards, in the near future.

He believes the topic can be added to the current course without sacrificing anything from its curriculum. The course currently focuses on developing self-assessment, personal-management, careerplanning, job-search, decisionmaking, organization, transition and communication skills.

cial literacy experts to teach students skills, noted Amarasooriya, adding, “The problem with that is that that only applies to some schools, and more than not it’s the affluent neighbourhoods.”

He didn’t know what to expect when he met with Minister Hunter, but he and the TYC were thrilled to find she and the Ministry of Education want to work with the group to make its vision a reality.

“I’m still in disbelief about it,” he said, following the meeting. “It was a great meeting and a productive one. We just want to make sure going forward that we don’t lose sight of the objective and that we actually create meaningful change in the curriculum.”

The TYC is excited to work with the Ministry to develop a curriculum, he added. The group is doing its homework and consulting with relevant parties to see what resources are available to aid curriculum development and how financial literacy is taught in other parts of Canada.

“We appreciate the feedback we received from members of the Toronto Youth Cabinet and will continue to work with educators, parents and students to inform next steps in curriculum review,” said Minister Hunter in a statement emailed to Metroland Media. “By learning about financial literacy, students will have the skills they need to thrive now and throughout the rest of their lives.”

On Nov. 3, Minister Hunter posted a video to Twitter captioned, “Hey @TOYouthCabinet, I hear you on #FinLit! Good news: We’re improving financial literacy for students.”

In the video, she talks about the importance of financial literacy for ensuring student success and economic strength.

“Ensuring that students have the information that they need for everyday life is critical,” she said. “We will be updating the Ontario curriculum careers course to have a dedicated module for financial literacy.”

Volunteer applications for Invictus Games Toronto 2017 are now being accepted.

More than 1,500 volunteer positions are available for the Invictus Games, an international sporting event for injured Armed Forces members and veterans. Volunteers must be 18 or older by January 2017 and able to complete several six-to-nine hour shifts between September 21 and October 1.

More than 550 men and women from 17 allied nations are expected to compete. Prince Harry, founder of the Invictus Games, visited Toronto May 2 to drum up excitement for the Toronto event alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne.

‘Alt-right’: we must be vigilant

I thought it might be nice to talk about garbage privatization in today's column - it looks as though garbage privatization, as in the collection of roadside waste by private companies rather than city workers, will be coming to Toronto Council in January.

But there's another kind of garbage to talk about this week. It's come to the surface just now, with timing that shouldn't be surprising but is still shocking.

It is white supremacism, and hate crime.

On Monday, Insidetoronto.com's Joanna Lavoie and others reported sightings of flyers, promoting a set of so-called "alt-right" websites, and headlined, "Hey, WHITE PERSON." The flyers / posters were tacked up near a school at Stan Wadlow Park in East York.

It's been comforting to believe the "alt-right" movement - white supremacy, dressed up with but-

Thinking this is, of course, naïve. In Ottawa Monday night, someone sprayed a swastika and an anti-Semitic slur on the front door of Rabbi Anna Maranta's home. In interviews, she says it's likely someone in

the neighbourhood - otherwise, how would they know to find the Rabbi's home?

It's not as though it's new. B'nai Brith has been tracking anti-Semitic incidents for decades. In 2015, the group logged a total of 1,277 such incidents - one of the higher numbers in the past decade, which has seen incidents numbering between 1,000 and 1,200 a year.

Racism, nativism, hate ... call it what you will, its seeds are planted in Canadian soil just as they are in America. And the electoral validation of a campaign that was based on those things has given them all cause to germinate.

What to do in the face of it? Tearing down the posters is a start. And after that - we've got to find a way to take out the garbage.

Sledge hockey is the Paralympic sport version of ice hockey. The players, who have a lower body disability, are strapped to a two-bladed sledge. They propel themselves with sticks spiked at one end and curved blades at the other for shooting.

Upgrades and renovations in 2011 made the arena accessible for sledge hockey, which recently came to the attention of FAJA. “We wondered why the Plexiglas was low, why the floors were slanted,” said Aishah Sheri, FAJA, Flemingdon, and Thorncliffe Park community lead.

Once they had the answer, the four-year-old grassroots organization reached out to the Ontario Sledge Hockey Association to learn more about the sport, she said, adding that led to talks about organizing the exhibition.

And neighbourhood schools are learning about sledge hockey and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Angela James, dubbed the ‘Wayne Gretzky of women’s hockey’, by creating artwork the week of Nov. 21 to display at the arena, Sheri said.

Hockey League, which started eight years ago with officers from 54 Division and youngsters from Flemingdon and Thorncliffe, which has grown to include 145 participants over a 15-week season.

Angela James Arena received $25,000 earlier this year for being a Top-10 finalist in a Kraft Hockeyville contest, marking the first time a Toronto rink had ever made it that far in the competition’s decade-long history.

The Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue area arena has its fair share of

issues, including a leaking roof and lack of bleachers, although it has yet to be decided how the $25,000 will be used, Sheri said.

She would like to see Flemingdon and Thorncliffe have a designated hub, noting green space is limited and recreation locales are lacking.

“It’s just a bridge that divides us,” she said of the two communities. “We need to have conversations about how to service all these people. Is it feasible and how would we make it work?”

Studies show separated bike lanes are working

When is a bike lane more than just a strip of paint along the road? How about when it’s fully separated from traffic?

A new city staff report, to be debated at Monday’s Public Works and Infrastructure committee meeting, reviews the performance of Toronto’s first fully-separated bike lanes.

The findings should provide more ammunition for cycling advocates seeking better separations from car traffic and public transit.

According to the report, once the Sherbourne Street lanes were fully separated between Bloor Street East and Lake Shore Boulevard as of 2015, the number of cyclists per day tripled to 3,500. And while many more bikes are using the lanes, the rate of collisions has actually reduced from 14 incidents for every 1,000 cyclists to five. Where plastic

Over on Bloor Street, where after several decades of fighting new lanes were installed on a pilot basis between Avenue Road and Shaw Street, the advocacy and outreach group CycleTO reports a sizeable increase of bike traffic thanks to the new infrastructure.

Add in reported increases to ridership on the Adelaide Street separated lanes, and it’s clear even

based on such preliminary data bike traffic is way up, at least downtown, thanks in no small part to the comfort gained by not having to share road space with cars.

But does this mean more separated lanes are in Toronto’s future? Judging by the list of approved city capital projects scheduled over 10 years, it’s unclear.

Toronto Council agreed in 2016 to fund the plan to the tune of $16-million a year, but it isn’t anywhere near a sure bet this will include separated infrastructure.

If Toronto Council is serious about making cycling safer in this city, it should make it a priority to build more separated bike lanes. The evidence is there.

Facial difference film premières at Civic Centre

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com A film starring a comedian who uses humour to bring awareness to people with facial differences will premiere in Toronto Friday, Nov. 18 at North York Civic Centre.

Love At Second Sight is an educational video showcasing middle school students who have their perceptions challenged about appearance and acceptance. The film features comedian and motivational speaker David Roche and his wife, Marlena Blavin.

“Having a facial difference has taught me a valuable life lesson because I was forced to find my inner beauty,” Roche said on the film’s website. “My passion is to share my experiences and inspire people, especially kids, to appreciate what is unique in them-

selves and others.”

Roche was born with swollen and entangled blood vessels on the left side of his face and neck.

Surgeries and heavy radiation therapy left him with radiation burns on his temple and eyelid.

In the video, Roche and Blavin share their stories with an audience of sixthgraders. As they explore themes of self-acceptance (Roche finds his inner beauty) and accepting others (Blavin moves from revulsion to friendship), the students’ reactions move from discomfort and stunned silence to laughter and engagement.

The duo leads a frank conversation about how it feels to be bullied and what to do when you meet someone who looks different such as taking a second look with an open heart, like Blavin did.

AboutFace, a North York-based charitable organization that provides education, support and life-changing experiences for people with facial differences, plans to use the film in schools to prevent bullying, encouraging people to take a second look, and promote acceptance of those who look different.

The premiere falls into Bullying Awareness Week Nov. 13 to 19. The event will include interactive storytelling with Roche and Blavin after the screening of the 23-minute film.

Love At Second Sight has been presented live more than 100 times in schools over the past 15 years.
