The annual Urban Hero awards are for those individuals who stand out in a crowd because they have made a difference in our neighbourhoods. They’re also for groups and businesses that are committed to making our community a better place to live. Award recipients this year will be selected in a range of categories, which include arts and culture, business, community, environment, health and science, education and sports. The winners will be announced and the awards presented at a gala event in November. It’s easy to nominate an Urban Hero online at http:// northyork.urbanheroes.ca/ nominate/

DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com It was a civil night between the five candidates vying for the Willowdale seat at an all-candidates meeting last Thursday as they debated the issues of national important. The meeting was organized by the Bayview Cummer Neighbourhood Association. The five candidates were asked about the Line 9 pipeline and how they would protect the community, local infrastructure, safety, municipal drinking water and property values in case of a problem with the pipeline. The flow of the pipeline is being reversed to carry crude oil eastward to Quebec through Ontario. Conservative candidate (and incumbent) Chungsen Leung defended the move, while his opponents talked about their concerns for the project. “Pipelines are safer than surface transportation, whether by rail or truck,” Leung said. He said monitoring equipment has improved, allowing for monitoring above and below ground. He said his government will ensure the proper emergency response is in place, with such things as containment, mop up, clean up

and remediation of soil. Liberal candidate Ali Ehsassi said the reversal of flow is concerning. He mentioned the Kalamazoo River oil spill of 2010 when a sixfoot break in a pipeline spilled oil into the river making for one of the costliest spills in the U.S. He said those pipelines were similar to those in Line 9. “All of us who looked at the regulatory process were befuddled how weak that process was,” he said, noting the Environmental Assessment process is no longer effective. He did not say how his government would act. NDP candidate Pouyan Ta b a s i n e j a d a g r e e d t h e Environmental Assessment process is too weak. The Green Party candidate and independent candidate stand
against the move. “It’s a no to everything that does not provide us with safe jobs,” Green candidate James Arruda said. “It’s a no because it’s not giving us any kind of income. It’s a no at the present moment because the (Alberta) tar sands are producing too much pollution, and only producing two per cent of our GDP (gross domestic product). This is one of the most ridiculous plans I have heard.” He said this is an opportunity for communities to connect with local First Nations populations, who are at the forefront of attempting to stop the project. Independent candidate Birinder Singh Ahluwalia is against the project. He said Canada’s natural resources must be transported, but not at the cost of lowered public and environmental safety.
“We should be leaders in setting the standards for environmental protection. Our standards should be higher than any other country before,” he said. He said standards must be strong enough that public safety is the first priority. The candidates were also asked about why they believe their party’s leader is the best person to lead this country. Green candidate Arruda said it was Elizabeth May who inspired him to run for politics in the first place. “What did inspire me was that I could finally approach such a highly esteemed person and not be judged just as any other citizen, but as a real human being.” Arruda said May is willing to form a coalition party to unseat Stephen Harper. “We need Elizabeth May to be able to stand up because she is the most fierce person I’ve ever met.” Tabasinejad said Tom Mulcair and the NDP stand up for what they believe in, even if it’s not popular to do so in the polls. Ehsassi said Liberal leader Justin Trudeau has been able to put together a strong team for the election. He said Trudeau and the Liberals
are recognizing issues that have not been addressed for a long time and will reverse that trend, such as into issues of infrastructure, student debt and seniors’ pensions. “Unlike our current government, he understands full well that if we want to have successful strategies to deal with our issues, we need a prime minister who works with all the premiers and is ready to work with municipalities,” he said. Leung had served in parliament the past four years with Harper and has seen him in action. He said Harper was able to see Canada out of the 2008 recession, he has a vision of Canada that ensures continuous job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity for Canadians and to keep them safe. While Ahluwalia has no party leader, he said the people of Willowdale would be his leader, and he would be able to work with all parties in parliament to get things done. Ahluwalia said building the country is about working together. “That’s how you build a beautiful country. It’s not a vision of just one man. It’s not a vision of just one party. It’s when all Canadians come together and vote together and they do their part. That makes the country work,” he said.
Spider Jones’ Believe to Achieve group receives Community Action Grant fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com An after-school program focusing on sports, homework and mentoring programs received a $50,000 boost from Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) Foundation last Wednesday. Believe to Achieve Organization, which was founded by former professional boxer Chuck “Spider” Jones and runs a program out of 160 Chalkfarm Dr. near Sheppard and Wilson avenues, was the inaugural recipient of the first $50,000 MLSE Foundation Community Action Grant. The multi-sport grant is awarded to non-profit organizations supporting youth sports programming in the
city, with submissions reviewed by a selection committee. Believe to Achieve Organization is a registered non-profit assisting kids eight to 16 in after-school personal development and mentorship programs. Spider’s Web Children and Youth Empowerment Centre, an initiative of Believe to Achieve, provides food programs, study groups for homework help, computer rooms, teaching guides, motivation support, no contact boxing training and healthy exercise habits based out of 160 Chalkfarm Dr. The grant will be used for staff funding, Jones said. He added 40 neighbourhood children are currently signed up for programming, with 250 on the
wait list. “We teach young people selfesteem, self-worth,” Jones said. “It’s not where you’re coming, it’s where you’re going that counts.” Scott Sutherland, executive director of Believe to Achieve, said the grant will ensure more staff is hired, which will in turn allow more kids into the Chalkfarm Drive program. “You see the success in what we’ve built,” he said. “There’s nothing like seeing smiling faces.” Tanya Mruck, MLSE Foundation director of operations, said $250,000 is up for grabs annually for the Community Action Grant.

an there be too much of a good thing? This summer and fall’s 11-week federal election campaign makes a persuasive argument when it comes to democracy.
The campaign that began in the dog days of August is now nearly finished. Some readers will have already cast their ballots in advance polls over the Thanksgiving weekend. The rest of us will put this campaign to rest Oct. 19. And then it will be done: Canada will have a new government, or at least a new set of party caucuses that will be empowered to sort out who that new government will be. And what for the rest of us? Well, we are probably in for a long period of recovery this jumbo-sized campaign our view from that has been notable for its vitdivisiveness. Get out and riolForand two-and-a-half months, vote for your well-funded political parties have been flooding our attention with values Oct. 19 awful assertions, often about one another, and all too often about ourselves. This may or may not win an election, but it certainly corrodes a country. Canadians have held a view of this country as inclusive and welcoming. While none of us are naïve enough to assume bigotry is absent, we have managed through, if nothing else, our legendary good manners, to hold that bigotry at least somewhat in check. We’ve done so also with the help of our leadership, who have through our history celebrated the country’s diversity, and gently chided outlying purveyors of hate, fear and division. Through this long election, we have been without that sort of leadership, or indeed any leadership. The Conservative government has rested in caretaker mode, busily defending itself against two strong contenders in the Liberals and the New Democrats. We are rudderless in this storm of ugliness. It’s something we can all consider as we cast our ballots. Are we choosing based on our own values, our own hopes for our federation, our communities and our families? Or are we slipping into fear and disdain and basing our choices on that? What motivates us may not make a difference to the outcome of this election. But it behooves us to remember: in making up our minds about our government, we are also making up our minds about ourselves. Please remember to vote Oct. 19.
letter
Government ads must deliver substance To the editor: Each week more than 1,000 English and French community newspapers – including the nine published by Metroland Media Toronto, which is a member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association – go about the business of telling stories that matter to the communities they serve. We are at your rinks and schools. We are at your school board and council meeting. We are at the scene when tragedy strikes. We celebrate your milestones. Our job is to cover your community. And we are good at it. We are in towns big and small. Some community newspapers circulate well in excess of 100,000 copies. Some are in the hundreds. It may surprise you that each week, more than 20 million copies of community newspapers are distributed across the country. Independent research shows that more than 70 per cent of Canadians read their community paper. Despite our collective
strength, ours is a medium easy to ignore. Because we focus on Canada one community at a time, we lack the sex appeal of other media. We’ve seen our share of federal government advertising gradually erode over the years. Our regional and national associations have met with government MPs, opposition MPs, cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats to promote our case. We are always met with courtesy and a promise that things will get better. Well things are not getting better. So despite it being contradictory to everything we believe in journalistically, the time has come to tell you. In short, the federal government is all but ignoring your community newspapers. We believe this means the federal government is ignoring you and your community’s right to be informed about programs and services offered by the Government of Canada. In the last fiscal year, the federal government spent $75 million on advertising. More than $26 million of that went to TV ads, while another
$15.5 million went to Internet advertising – an industry dominated by American-based companies like Google and Facebook. Creating ads and paying ad agencies ate away another $10 million. Radio advertising cost just under $7 million. By comparison, community newspapers saw a paltry $867,000 in total advertising from Ottawa – or an average of about $25 per week per newspaper. The way in which your government uses your money to communicate with you is very telling. TV and Internet ads work to build brand, not to inform. Your community newspaper generates debate and serves as a forum for discussion – and is also one of the few places where local MPs actually receive editorial coverage outside election season. The federal government knows it, too. The Prime Minister Stephen Harper government spent $1.25 million with a company called NewsCanada to create its own stories, stories it offers for free to print and broadcast outlets. The majority
of these government-approved stories are never published. But you and I paid for them. It is disconcerting the federal government spent 50 per cent more creating its own news than the total advertising buy in Canadian newspapers. The federal government strategy appears to be that it’s more important to make pretty ads than to put relevant information about programs in front of readers of community newspapers. They’re telling you they’d rather give your tax dollars to Facebook and Google than Canadian-based companies that invest in local journalism. If the federal government continues to ignore our community newspapers, some communities may lose them. When that happens a vital voice is silenced. If you believe, as we do, that government should invest in meaningful communication with citizens through community newspapers, we ask you to help us by contacting your local candidates. Groundbreaking for therapeutic garden at NYGH slated to begin in spring 2016

>>>from page 1 Collegiate Institute student many didn’t see – her struggle with depression, which ultimately claimed her young life April 11. Shortly after her death, German established The Maddie Project, an organization which supports youth struggling with depression and other mental health-related concerns. Noting the care Madeline received at North York General Hospital (NYGH) while suffering from anxiety and depression, German said she wanted to support initiatives at the site dealing with the same issues the teen was. “When Maddie was at the hospital, she talked about wouldn’t it be great to have funding for an on-site program at the hospital, or maybe even a gym,” German said. “When she passed, in her honour, we wanted to recognize her wish.” Her wish will take the form of a $1 million commitment to NYGH Foundation for the development of a therapeutic garden named
Maddie’s Healing Garden at the hospital-owned Phillips House, which is undergoing a $7-million transformation into a child and adolescent mental health services site. A former country estate that has sat vacant for nearly a decade, Phillips House, also known as Wynyates, will become a state-of-the-art site for children, teens, young women and their families. The 15,000-square foot site, situated on 1.2 acres east of Leslie Street and Sheppard Avenue at 10 Buchan Crt., will bring together the adolescent eating disorders outpatient and day hospital programs from the Branson site at Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue, the child and adolescent day hospital program from the main site at Leslie Street and Hwy. 401, and the child and adolescent outpatient mental health services from the Branson site. The design by Montgomery Sisam Architects will include bright, sunlit rooms, and a new trellised veranda and outdoor dining room. The semi-historical mansion’s facade will be
kept intact. “Maddie loved the outdoors,” German said. “There will be lots of room for exercising, meditation, art therapy. It’s a beautiful setting.” Seeded by tribute gifts received in Madeline’s memory, in combination with a leading gift from her grandparents Sandra and Gary German, The Maddie Project has raised close to $200,000 toward the $1 million goal. An additional $63,000 will be added to the total through the fundraising efforts of more than 100 runners in the upcoming Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Sunday, Oct. 18. “The garden will go around the entire property,” said Terry Pursell, president and CEO of NYGH Foundation. “The role of exercise and interacting with nature is a huge part of healing. It’s going to be a very, very special place.” Groundbreaking is slated to start in spring 2016 pending building permits and various government agency approval, with an opening set for spring 2017.

Lillian Public School students perform a song during the opening ceremony held Friday for the school's new outdoor classroom.
Lillian Street Public School students work, learn in an outdoor environment Rotary Club of Willowdale donates $6,000 for outdoor classroom fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com When Nima Ahadi is looking for a peaceful, quiet place to do his school work, he heads to the back of Lillian Street Public School and into the outdoor classroom. “You can work outside in the fresh air and nature,” said the Grade 5 student, adding the outdoor setting helps him concentrate. The 10 year old was speaking during the official opening of the outdoor classroom Friday, Oct. 9, which was made possible by a $6,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Willowdale. Situated beside the school’s play structure and nestled amongst the trees, the outdoor classroom is made up of two rows of large rocks, with

one rock at the front for the teacher. All subjects, from art to science, are taught in the space for the Willowdale and Steeles avenues school’s junior kindergarten to Grade 5 students. The concept for an outdoor classroom came to light three years ago when a group of parents whose children attended Lillian made a pitch to the school council, and then the Rotary Club of Willowdale. “I thought it was kind of a neat thing to do, so we did it,” said Peter Vanek, past president of the Rotary Club of Willowdale.

Kayla Medeiros, 10, joins the festivities during the opening ceremony at Lillian Public School's new outdoor classroom.
“The proposal was for us to fund an outdoor classroom for the purpose of eco-studies and all that
entails.” Donna Quan, director of the Toronto District School Board, said learning in an outdoor classroom improves mental health and well-being. “Our learning space is no longer in the classroom,” she said. Principal Riley Lord said the outdoor classroom is “fabulous” for students. “It provides an extra space for all kinds of activities,” she said, adding the outdoor classroom has been in use since 2014. Rotary International District Governor Michael Bell unveiled a plaque by the teacher’s rock in memory of late Rotary Club of Willowdale members John De Boer and Gordon Bennett, who were instrumental in seeing the outdoor classroom come to fruition.
>>>from page 1 Seneca’s director of marketing communications. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to talk to these innovative thought-leaders and ask them questions about how they go to where they are, ask them about what matters to them, and how they crossed their threshold. Hopefully, it will inspire our students.” She said each of the speakers at this year’s conference has had to cross their threshold to achieve greatness and that’s what Seneca hopes to inspire in its students. “We do that every day with our students. We help them cross thresholds so that they can go on to achieve great things,” she said. “It’s all
about stepping over that hurdle to go on to achieve your next great thing in life.” T h i s ye a r’s s p e a k e r s include people from all walks of life, from an aerospace and chemical engineers to an artist, church reverend and a sex worker. The conference runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Seneca’s participants will be able to come and go throughout, whether that’s for one speaker or for part or the whole event. The school has seating for 300, and 900 individuals have signed up to attend. The college isn’t taking any more reservations.

North York projects get nod for heritage efforts H e r i t a g e To r o n t o h a s awarded several Nor th York-based publications and organizations for their efforts in preserving the city’s history. The awards were handed out at a Heritage Toronto gala at Koer ner Hall Tuesday. Local winners in the Community Heritage awards category include the Girl Guides of Canada–Ontario Council (headquartered in North York) and Lawrence Park Heritage Committee. Local Book category winners include the publication Reclaiming the Don: An Environmental History of Toronto’s Don River Valley by Jennifer Bonnell, assistant professor in the department of history at York University, which received an award of excellence; and Both Sides of the Fence: Surviving the Trap, a memoir by Michael A. Amos about his upbringing in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue neighbourhood, which received an award of merit. The Girl Guides of Canada’s history dates back
to 1910, and that history is available to the public in person and online. The organization has hired an archivist, incorporated a research and storage facility into their new office, digitized a portion of their collection and developed programming to bring this history to life. The Heritage Toronto awards jury commended the organization for its effort to archive and make its history accessible. T h e L a w re n c e Pa rk Heritage Committee was established by local residents concerned about the demolition of ‘garden suburb’ homes in the neighbourhood, built in the 1910s and 1920s. The group has hosted regular evening talks in century houses, has submitted a request to the City of Toronto for the establishment of a Heritage Conservation District and publishes a local newsletter, “The History Nugget”.

Be thoughtful when voting Oct. 19
Faculty of Education
I
have a project for you, good reader, as you head out to vote, and just as important, as you head back home to get on with the next few years of your life. Be thoughtful. This shouldn’t be a project, and for many readers it needn’t be. But after having spent a good chunk of both the summer and the fall in an election campaign that for a good many voters seems to have turned on women’s fashion at citizenship ceremonies, it is clearly necessary for a large portion of us. It’s not surprising that it should be so: across North America, the political discourse over the past few years has veered consistently away from thoughtfulness and toward the knuckle-headed. Donald Trump is currently riding high on the greasy fingers of a mosh-pit of knuckle-heads in the Republican primaries. He may well have gotten some ideas from former

david nickle the city mayor Rob Ford’s 2010 campaign that was propelled by knuckle-headed rhetoric. And no wonder that Stephen Harper and the Conservatives took the knuckle-headed lesson to heart in the latter half of their campaign, with the business of the niqab, the “barbaric practices” snitch line and so on. We’ll see just how well that decision works out for them on election day. It certainly seemed to have an impact in the polls, at least for a while, as a certain demographic of voter abandoned thoughtful consideration for fear and loathing. The real question is what kind of message that strategy reinforces on both the electorate and the clever strategists looking to elect future governments. If the Conservatives don’t prevail, then the impact will
be limited on strategists. After all, when Doug Ford ran from a problematic place for mayor in 2014, he came closer than you’d think to beating John Tory, but couldn’t quite make it. Rob Ford, had he been well enough to run, might have prevailed for a second term, and he might yet prevail should he choose to run in the 2018 campaign. In the U.S. Republican primaries, Trump might prevail with his anti-immigrant rhetoric in winning the nomination, but he also might not, and as to his chances of actually winning the American presidency... Ultimately, that’s not up to us. What is up to us is make it a project to be thoughtful, when clever people are offering serious temptation to be the opposite. We can start right after the election or better, we can start right now.

The province will launch a pilot program in 2016 testing driverless cars. The automated vehicles, which use artificial intelligence to operate, will be out on Ontario roads starting Jan. 1. While there’s no indication how many driverless cars will be tested, a press release announcing the pilot notes there are 100 companies in the province currently involved in research and development for the automated car industry. TTCRIDERS GRADE PARTIES’ PRIORITIES Ahead of next week’s election, TTCriders has released a report card assessing the transit improvement plans of the main three parties, and the results are less than impressive. None of the Conservatives, Liberals or NDP received a satisfactory rating for their respective plans with the Conservatives taking particular heat for underfunding local transit. The Liberals and NDP hardly rate any better and TTCriders

The baseball playoffs are well underway but the trash talk has been rather light from both the TTC and Arlington, Texas-based Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). The TTC’s Brad Ross did try to initiate a bit of banter by tweeting at DART ahead of last weekend’s games in Arlington for the continuation of the American League Divisional Series between the Blue Jays and Rangers, if it was OK for visiting Toronto fans to bring “real”, i.e. Canadian, beer into the ballpark. DART however didn’t take the bait.

Jeanette Sadik-Khan rose to prominence as the city’s transportation commissioner under former mayor Michael Bloomberg, holding that post until 2013. Under her watch New York more than doubled its bike lane network and famed Times Square became a pedestrian plaza. Construction also began on the city’s first subway line, the Second Avenue Subway, in nearly a century. Scarborough Academic Family Health Team (SAFHT)
3000 Lawrence Avenue East, Building C, Suite C-02, Scarborough, ON M1P 2V1 Phone: (416) 439-7473 Fax: (416) 439-7475 Email: hr@safht.ca
Volunteer Board of Directors (up to 3 Community Volunteer positions available) The Scarborough Academic Family Health Team (SAFHT) consists of administrative staff and health professionals: nurse practitioners, registered nurses, a physician assistant, mental health team, dietician, health educator, chiropodist and pharmacist. It also has 20 affiliated family physicians and their office/medical staff. The SAFHT is part of a network of Family Health Teams engaged in primary care along with other dimensions of health care service delivery funded by of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The extended network of health care delivery includes Community Care Access Centres (CCACs) Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs), hospitals, specialists and lab services. As a provincially incorporated, not-for-profit corporation, SAFHT provides comprehensive primary health care services in an interprofessional setting to the patients of its 20 affiliated physicians. Funded 100% by the province, the team operates out of 11 locations, eight sites of which are primarily occupied by an affiliated physician practice. The ministry funding is to contractually provide programs focused on patient-centred care in the areas of chronic disease management, health promotion and disease prevention. In early 2015 the rostered and unrostered patients totalled over 34,000; located primarily in eastern Toronto and also spread across the GTA. SAFHT’s physicians who previously formed the Board have now decided to move to a mixed model of governance and are seeking up to three (3) community volunteers to join the SAFHT Board of Directors. As a Board Director, you will be responsible for directing the affairs of the organization in accordance with its constituting documents, applicable legislation, government contracts and policies established and communicated to Family Health Teams by the Government of Ontario. Directors would serve for a term of up to three years, subject to the renewal schedule of the by-laws. Significant experience on a not-for-profit Board of Directors is preferred along with an understanding of health-care administration and a desire to participate in making SAFHT a leading health care organization. To address the need for a diversity of skills, the current Board is looking for potential nominees with the following skills/experience: • Finance and accounting preferably acquired in a business. • Human and labour relations in a larger corporate or broader public sector environment. • Legal issue resolution and risk management from a corporate or broader public sector environment. • Government relations acquired in government or lobbying government from any capacity. • Corporate management preferably acquired in the business or not-for-profit environment.
