York U. students paint seniors building rebecca field rfield@metroland.com WoodGreen Community Services teamed up with 140 York University students to paint the hallways of one of their seniors homes recently.

The students painted the 22-storey building, located at 444 Logan Ave. in roughly four hours.

“It’s a good moment to stop and reflect on our privilege at being able to get to go to university, to make people feel comfortable in their home.” said Ashley Grenville who works with the University housing program called Residence Life.

The building, which provides housing to low-income seniors, is run by WoodGreen and is nearly 50 years old and has 159 units.

“I’m looking forward to the conversations that will come out of this experience,” said Grenville. “Those who have financial needs, and how much we value the elderly in our community.”

“At an educational institution such as York, there’s not a large population of the elderly, so this is an opportunity to connect with a part of the community that we don’t usually get to connect with.”

The volunteers were all in leadership positions at the university, from residence Dons to health promotion leaders.

“By helping our students learn

these skills, just the experience itself will hopefully benefit them in their successes moving forward,” said Grenville.

The building’s walls were taped prior to painting by another team the day before, and students were divided into teams of five on each floor.

“I’m really looking forward to the fact that we get to give back to the community,” said Katie Snow, a fifth year kinesiology student who volunteered for the planning team for the project. “I think that’s really cool. It’s what we’re all about — leadership and giving back.”

York hired some professional painters for the day to teach the student volunteers the proper way to paint the walls. The volunteers also received donations of paintbrushes, rollers, and paint.

“It’s amazing. It’s going to make a lot of happy residents here,” said Judy Lyons, 72, a resident of the building whose own son went to York University.

“I moved in a week and a half ago, and there’s a lot of things that have to be fixed,” said Lyons. “The mind is still young, but the body’s not working so I can’t go out and do

it (fix things).”

“When I heard volunteers, it gave me goose bumps,” said Lyons.

Along with painting, the building’s hallways will be getting new floors over the next month as well.

“When it comes to painting a whole building the cost can be really expensive,” said Angela Cooke, Vice President of Housing, Community and Support at WoodGreen.

Cooke said the money that would have been allocated to paint the walls will now be used for better quality flooring and lighting thanks to the volunteers.

“Even though its an affordable housing project, I want to ensure that the buildings look nice, they look homey, they look inviting, and when people come into the building that’s not the perception that they have,” said Cooke who noted they picked out a nice country beige colour for the walls.

“We’ve never done a community service project like this,” said Catherine Salole, from the Department of Student Community and Leadership Development at the university. “I imagine this will be the first of many projects that we do like this.”

Filmmaker nets prize for short film ‘30-Love’ A North York filmmaker took home the prize for Best Canadian Short Film at the Montreal World Film Festival Monday.

Richard E. Stark won the award for his film 30-Love at the festival’s closing night ceremonies.

Stark’s film, which was shot in Los Angeles where he now resides, beat more than 35 short Canadian films for the top prize.

30-Love is a short comedy about Bruce (Ludwig Manukian), who drags his wife Jodi (Jennifer Cooley), to try to join a ritzy country club that’s way beyond their means. To get in, they must impress its snobby board members, an obnoxiously perfect couple, who have the wealth and status Bruce so badly wants. What begins as a friendly tennis game quickly deteriorates into an all-out class war, as the perfect couple takes every opportunity to humiliate their opponents.

Under the pressure of the match, Bruce and Jodi’s strained relationship is put to the test in front of a pretentious country club audience.

Just as it seems as if his marriage is falling apart, Bruce realizes his relationship with his wife is more important than his pursuit of social status

and takes matters into his own hands.

Stark’s work has made it onto screens at various film festivals over the past two years, including at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2011 for Afternoon Tea, for which he received a 2012 Leo Award nomination for Best Screenwriting in a Short Drama.

His short comedy An Innocent Family, which won him the Best Director award at the 2012 Nevada International Film Festival, also earned him a nomination for Best Short Film at the Milan International Film Festival Awards in 2012.

Stark’s script My Son’s Big Bris was a finalist in the screenwriting competition at the 2011 Los Angeles Comedy Festival and the 2011 Beverly Hills Film Festival. He’s hoping to make the film his feature film directorial debut and is currently looking for funding, he said.

Ta k i n g o n a d a r k e r topic, Stark was recently in Vancouver shooting a short film about a girl dealing with her sister’s suicide.

30-Love, which premiered Aug. 23 at the Montreal World Film Festival, will have its United States premiere at the LA Shorts Fest Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Provincial report worth exploring

L

ast September, the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario issued a comprehensive Pedestrian Death Review.

It’s a relevant and timely document, based on the 95 pedestrian deaths in Ontario in 2010. The report contains several recommendations on how to improve pedestrian safety.

We mention this report in light of the tragic death this week of 14-year-old Violet Jia Liang in North York.

For the second time in six months in this city, a school-aged child has been fatally struck during school hours. Back in March, five-year-old Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger, who was walking home from school, was struck and killed by a garbage truck at Cliffside and East Haven drives in Scarborough.

In response to Kayleigh’s death, Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford had asked the city’s waste management department to review “all policies, equipment, training our view requirements and routing to reduce the risk of injuries or fatalito pedestrians in the future.”

Show us the tiesThe motion was passed by plans to make council in April and a report is expected back to council next streets safe spring. In response to this latest tragedy, Crawford has hinted at broadening this review (the truck that hit Violet was not a city vehicle).

We’d like to see the city publicly update residents on any work related to adopting recommendations in the coroner’s report, and specifically point out further areas if they exist where the recommendations have relevance to Toronto residents. The report did recommend “all municipalities annually undertake a forensic review of all pedestrian deaths that have occurred within their jurisdictions.”

Reports and studies only have value when their recommendations are implemented. City staff has acknowledged the report’s value: Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health recommended the city’s Board of Health “commend the Chief Coroner for the important research.”

And Toronto has done some positive things for pedestrians. In 2002, the city approved the first Pedestrian charter in North America, and adopted its own walking strategy in 2007.

On pedestrian deaths, it’s clear the preventive solutions we seek will be multi-faceted, will require community input, and rely on the wisdom of experts in the field. We believe the city must take this opportunity to show the public its plans to make the streets safer.

Balancing act benefits Toronto’s economy For all of those who refuse to believe the worst about Toronto, our ranking as one of the best places in which to live among 140 cities worldwide must be reassuring.

All of the top five cities – Melbourne, Vienna, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary – share similarities: they are mid-sized, and all have medium-level densities. The criteria by which they were rated include political stability, health care, culture, the environment, education, and infrastructure.

When the list is extended to the Top 10, and so takes in cities from Finland and New Zealand, additional similarities can be found, such as all being part of economies that value both private and public investment.

Equally remarkable is that the most famous cities are missing from the top.

For instance those cities with cachet or buzz, such as

david soknacki beyond the headlines Paris, London or New York, are well down. So are others that excel in just a couple of criteria at the expense of others.

Hong Kong comes to mind: it has enviable economic growth and superior hard infrastructure, but extremely high densities, many inadequate services, and a murky political environment.

Many Torontonians, who think their hometown is full of shortcomings, have much to learn. Perhaps the first lesson ought to be in selfesteem.

We are near the top of the list not because we do one thing perfectly, but because we are able to achieve a balance so well.

While we might moan about gridlock, we are investing in both transit expansion and major road

repair. Privately and publicly we give to culture and support environmental initiatives yet we have embraced frugality as a culture at City Hall.

The same balance is evident when looking at development. Much of urban planning thinking centres around using public resources efficiently, which leads to intensification. Yet pushed to extremes, overdevelopment creates its own problems, which are hugely expensive to fix and sometimes takes decades.

Set against these forces of capitalism and orthodoxy is a jumble of municipal regulation and a provincial tribunal, which often produces a sensible balance between density and preservation.

None of Toronto’s strengths would be sustainable without a strong local economy. Here we have achieved success as well.

Our most recent employment figures are up, as are retail sales. In addition, our

low office and industrial vacancy rates are a sure a sign of healthy investment.

Like our other successes, Toronto’s economic strength is not due to any one sector. We have successfully although painfully changed from competing as a low-cost manufacturer into being a centre for value-added services across a range of industries such as finance, aerospace, education and health care.

In short, we have achieved a quality of living that is the envy of the world by moving with the times and achieving a balance in so many areas of our urban life.

For the future our goal must not to worry about being the biggest, the flashiest, or excelling in one virtue at the expense of others, but rather to continue the balancing that we do so well.

“I can’t imagine what the family is going through. It’s mind-boggling. It sends a shiver down your spine,” he said. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

I’m a father. I have a young daughter. I shudder to think what this would do to me.”

Violet’s death comes nearly six months after Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger, 5, died on March 7 after being struck by a city garbage truck at the intersection of Cliffside and East Haven drives as she walked home from Cliffside Public School.

The truck driver was charged with careless driving.

Kayleigh’s death prompted Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford to ask council in April for a safety review of the city’s Solid Waste Services.

Council directed the division’s general manager to review as soon as possible “all policies, equipment, training requirements and routing to reduce the risk of injuries or fatalities to pedestrians in the future.”

other pedestrian safety concerns.

“It (Violet’s death) is an absolute tragedy. I know firsthand what the community is going through (following Kayleigh’s death),” he said.

A f t e r V i o l e t’s d e a t h , Crawford met with Solid Waste officials Wednesday to find out the status of the review.

He also wants to meet with Perruzza to gauge his thoughts on expanding the review and to determine the mandate if it makes sense to proceed.

An expanded review would likely include school board officials, he said.

In the wake of the tragedy, it is natural to demand action but Crawford said he wants to ensure a broader review doesn’t provide knee-jerk recommendations.

For example, regulating private vehicles brings different challenges than with city ones.

Also, while Violet died after being hit by a truck, it is possible the same tragedy

could have involved a car or minivan, which would be more difficult to regulate in school areas. Moreover, banning trucks in school zones could simply force them on to other residential roads.

In addition, enforcement of new rules may be difficult to implement.

“At the end of the day, this is about safety, not only of students but pedestrians who use the streets,” Crawford said.

Perruzza said he has been talking to his staff about reviewing truck safety following Violet’s death and welcomes the chance to discuss the issue with Crawford.

“I would like to sit down with Gary and see what he is thinking about,” he said.

“But I want our (city) staff to look at school zones and all the bylaws that pertain to school zones (to see if changes are needed).”

PhD student charts Toronto’s most dangerous intersections for cyclists RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A graduate student’s analysis of 24 years of bike collision data suggests cyclists are more at risk on streets without bike lanes.

Adrian Verster’s study examines 31,000 accidents involving cyclists taken from the city’s Toronto Traffic Safety Unit’s (TTSU) reporting between 1986 and 2010.

As the incidents were GPS tagged, he was able to pinpoint on which streets the accidents were taking place in order to come up with a list of the 50 most dangerous intersections in the city to cycle.

He examined collision statistics released annually by the TTSU based primarily on data taken from police reports detailing the nature of cycling accidents, where it took place, who was at fault and other factors.

As an avid cyclist with an interest in statistical analysis, Verster had downloaded the publicly available data on cycling collisions, which he planned to examine in detail in between completing his PhD in

genomics at the University of Toronto.

But what really motivated him to complete the study was the serious accident his girlfriend Kate had while riding her bike a month ago near Avenue and Davenport Roads, fourth on his list of dangerous intersections.

“She was struck by a car turning right, and was in hospital for 48 hours,” recalled Verster. “She suffered a concussion, which all things considered, was extremely good compared to how bad it could have been.”

At first, Verster found the busiest intersections, like those along Yonge Street, had the largest number of collisions. That came as no surprise given the high volumes of traffic.

But when he “normalized” the data” by taking into account existing traffic volume at intersections and the surrounding area, he began to see patterns

emerge along two prominent streets.

“Bloor Street and Queen Street began to show up a lot and the similarity is they don’t have bike lanes,” said Verster this week.

“They’re used a lot for commuting and I’m almost certain that’s why they showed up in the analysis.”

He also noticed how intersections that “twist and turn” were more likely than straight roads to have more collisions, such as at Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street.

He also found accidents were more likely to take place during the evening rush hour commute.

City spokesperson Daniel Egan said some of Verster’s findings were in line with previous analysis.

Still, Egan warned against making conclusions based on decades-old data.

“I would question whether data 25 years ago is relevant today,” said Egan, manager of cycling infrastructure and programs for the city. “I would

interpret these numbers with a grain of salt.”

Chief among Egan’s concerns was Verster using only car traffic data, the only data he could find, to compare to the rate of bicycle collisions at an intersection.

“You really have to compare collision frequency with the volume of cyclists on the road if you’re going to make a pronouncement about danger,” he said.

“If there are 4,000 cyclists a day versus 200, then I would argue the street with 200 is probably more dangerous.”

Egan said Toronto streets are actually getting safer since more people are riding.

“There’s lots of evidence there’s safety in numbers,” he said. “The more cyclists there are, the safer roads are for cyclists.”

While Verster acknowledged rankings aren’t perfect, he stood by his conclusions.

“Every intersection on the list should be considered dangerous,” he said.

Planners in Public Spaces (PiPS) is the latest marketing brainchild from the city’s planning department and chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat.

Similar to a previous undertaking headed up by Keesmaat –the Feeling Congested? public transit consultations which launched last spring– she said the goal of PiPS was to makecity planning more accessible to the public.

“It’s a way to introduce ourselves and explain to people what it is that planners do,” said Keesmaat of the monthlong campaign, which runs until Sept. 19.

“I really see this as a first step in making planning in

this city more transparent and collaborative.”

The four-hour launch allowed Keesmaat and her team to interact with visitors to the Square, answer questions or concerns about urban design and planning and explain the key aspects of her department’s mandate, which includes advising city council and improving transportation and design plans to create a more livable city.

The main attraction for participants young and old, however, was the opportunity to contribute to the building of a miniature Toronto entirely out of Lego.

“There’s people who know a lot and are city building fanatics and there’s people here only for the Lego, but their interest is piqued as a result of this exercise,” said Keesmaat, who brought her young son Louis along to take part in the city building.

Moaz Ahmad also attended

the PiPS launch with his young son. He said planning issues should be part of school curriculum.

“What I would like to see is for the city to take this project into our public schools,” said Ahmad, a Mississauga schoolteacher. “Bring it to a level where everyone feels they can participate.”

Keesmaat hoped better awareness of planning issues would lead to more accountability for decisions made by politicians for reasons other than sound planning principles.

“The more people involved in the process with a really good understanding of the implications of our long term decisions, the better the planning outcomes will be over the long term,” she said.

York University remains “extremely concerned” about the ongoing detention in Cairo, Egypt of film professor John Greyson, calling for his immediate release.

Greyson, along with Tarek Loubani, an emergency medicine physician and

professor from London, Ontario, were arrested Aug. 16 when they stopped at a police station to ask for directions, but have not been charged.

“A tenured faculty member in the department of film, Greyson is an esteemed member of the York community and an acclaimed Canadian filmmaker,” York president Mamdouh Shoukri said in a statement last Thursday.

“It was Greyson’s stated intention to travel this August to Gaza, through Cairo, Egypt, to conduct fieldwork in the area, an intent that is entirely in keeping with his professional and creative activities on, and relating to, filmmaking as a York professor and member of the broader film community.”

According to a friend, Loubani was heading to Gaza as part of a collaboration between the
