t’s a simple thing, right?”

That’s Nick Kouvalis – the marketing-and-campaignmanager who helped Rob Ford win the mayor’s race in 2010 – on the trick to running a winning campaign for arguably the

highest-profile municipal post in Canada.

Getting that post routinely requires a war chest of more than $1 million and a commitment of all or most of a year to a political marathon that has defeated cabinet ministers, CEOs, city councillors and even former mayors as they vie for the hearts, minds and ultimately votes of almost three

million Torontonians.

The finish line for the upcoming marathon campaign is a little over a year from now – Oct. 27, 2014.

Cricket game leads to saving children’s lives Fundraiser for Guyana Help the Kids set for Oct. 5 LISA Queen lqueen@insidetoronto.com

D

r. Narendra Singh, chief of pediatrics at Humber River Hospital, only intended to take in a cricket game on a trip to his native Guyana a few years ago.

Instead, that match led to him setting up a program that is saving the lives of babies and children by providing education and medical facilities.

“It was purely accidental. I’m a huge cricket fan, being from a British colony. I went back four or five years ago to watch a cricket game,” said Singh, who grew up on the grounds of the hospital in the capital city of Georgetown where his father was the administrator.

“And after that (game), I thought, ‘Let me check out my old stomping ground,’ which is the hospital.”

While visiting, the chiefs of staff and pediatrics invited him to tour the pediatric ward and neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU).

Singh was dismayed.

In the pediatric ward, where infection control practices were basically non-existent, about 50 children were being treated in one large room crammed with makeshift beds.

Some babies in the NICU were cared for in wooden boxes. The unit’s few incubators weren’t working.

Equipment such as intravenous pumps and monitors were unavailable.

“Being chief of pediatrics at a hospital here in Toronto, looking at the standard of care we provide for our children and looking at the standard of care for kids from a country where I’m from, I was pretty devastated,” Singh said.

He grew up in Guyana, on the northern coast of South America, until the age of 14.

His family came to Canada in 1973 to escape political troubles, worries about the education system and safety concerns for the family.

In the mid-1990s, Singh began visiting his homeland every few years, Those vacations didn’t prepare him for the substandard facilities he witnessed at the hospital.

“It’s like the world moved ahead and they kind of got left behind,”

he said.

“I look at some of the moms there and I see the babies in their hands and I think, ‘This could be me, this could be my wife. These could be my kids.’ It was hard to swallow.”

Singh is quick to stress the doctors and nurses were providing the best care they could with the limited resources they had.

“We’re not blaming them for not providing optimum care,” he said.

“Under the circumstances, under which they had to work, they were doing a very, very good job. If I was under those conditions, I don’t think I could do as good a job.”

Singh launched Guyana Help the Kids (GHTK), a registered Canadian charity that is holding its annual fundraising dinner and dance in Toronto Oct. 5.

Although some in Guyana welcomed the charity’s help, others resented its presence and questioned its motives.

“We had to exercise a tremendous amount of diplomacy when we went back. We had to walk on eggs for a while, until we proved ourselves,” Singh said. “(The naysayers said) ‘You feel you have gone abroad for 34 years and you’ve trained and you know more than we do? I don’t think so.

You can’t be doing this just out of the goodness of your heart. You must be getting something out of this.’ And once you go beyond that and you prove them wrong, they

are definitely on side.”

From the outset, education was at the heart of GHTK so Guyanese doctors and nurses could be trained to care for their own patients.

hospital and university officials and the minister of health to establish a pediatric residency program for doctors.

Doctors from the University of Toronto, McMaster University and universities in the U.S. travel

monthly to Guyana to train physicians there.

Meanwhile, the first 11 nurses graduated from a neo-natal nursing program two months ago set up by GHTK and 20 more will begin in November.

In March 2012, a 24-bed, fully equipped NICU opened at the Georgetown hospital. In its first year, infant mortality dropped by 50 per cent, meaning 80 babies are alive today who may otherwise have died. Three months ago, two NICU units opened at smaller hospitals and two more are expected next year.

GHTK has brought technology to the Georgetown hospital through a virtual classroom and virtual medical consultations.

After learning children with leukemia could only be treated abroad if their parents could afford it, the charity facilitated a partnership through the Buffalo Children’s Hospital to begin a pediatric cancer care program.

Singh is thrilled to see the difference GHTK has made to the care of babies and youngsters in Guyana.

What we’d like to see in 2014 W

hile 13 months may seem like a long time away, Toronto’s next municipal election and the race for who will be the mayor of our city come Oct. 27, 2014 is actually coming fast.

In today’s edition, our special feature looks at some of the names being talked about as possible mayoral candidates. Considering that municipal candidates can register their nomination, start campaigning (and more importantly start raising money) as of Jan. 3, the time for voters to start paying attention is now.

As our story points out, running for mayor in Toronto has become a costly marathon requiring a huge amount of political and personal stamina, and about $1 million in funding.

The last mayoral race in 2010 had debates virtually every day in the final six weeks of a campaign that was ultimately won by Rob Ford.

Ford will be running again, and we’ve identified some our view possible challengers in our story.

Campaign for It’s our hope, though, that the 2014 campaign will be difmayor needs to ferent from 2010. That camfocus on city unity paign saw the divide between our city’s suburban communities of Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke and the downtown core ramped up for political gain.

Ford played that divide masterfully, tapping into the frustration felt by suburban residents toward outgoing mayor David Miller and his administration, which was perceived as downtown-centric.

Yes, it was a winning formula, but we’d like to see a campaign focusing on bringing Torontonians together in 2014 rather than a polarization of our city’s communities.

We’d also like to see a race free from party politics.

It’s critical municipal politics stays free of the party system. It’s the only level of representation we have not linked to political parties and agendas that may not mesh with the needs of a specific neighbourhood or ward.

While high-profile mayor’s races attract voter interest, remember that choosing your ward councillor is a critically important decision. These are the politicians in your neighbourhood, close to your issues, and who are actually approachable.

Also, be wary of council candidates latching onto mayoral candidates in an attempt to ride their coattails. Councillors’ first priority should be the people of the community they represent, not their political allegiance to the mayor.

Playing the Scarborough subway game

A

s sport, there have been few spectacles more entertaining than the political maneuvering over the subway extension in Scarborough.

Even better, and unlike professional athletics with their complex rules, the subway sport is easy to understand: the goal is to get credit for your side while wrongfooting opponents.

It’s somewhat disrespectful to describe a major public investment so flippantly. Too bad that it’s the easiest way to understand current decision-making.

The situation begs for such an interpretation since the key players identify themselves by their membership and by constantly jabbing at competitors.

One group, which itself includes plenty of infighting, consists of a majority of council plus the mayor.

It supports a subway, and has given TTC staff direction for a preferred route, so that the TTC has written technical specifications for

david soknacki beyond the headlines this subway in such a way that almost prevents other options.

Almost. The provincial government and its transit agency Metrolinx make up another team. They have enough transit expertise and antagonism to announce a proposal that would/could force council to choose between the Metrolinx route, or not have enough funds for any subway.

And finally the federal government entered the ring. The prime minister and finance minister see the mayor as their ally, and the provincial government as an adversary. Without consultation with the province, which is how the provincial government behaved towards City Hall, the federal government supported council’s route plus announced a $660-million contribution.

Federal support was deliberately set well below the amount needed to complete the city plan. Perhaps since the provincial government is the jurisdiction closest to an election, Queen’s Park felt the pressure to provide additional funding and re-consider its route.

So it didn’t take long for the premier to suggest a meeting with the mayor.

Yes, it is fun to watch. But it is incredibly bad policy.

Let’s leave aside the Light Rapid Transit-versussubway argument, although abandoning the LRT is the equivalent of about eight years of tax support for the Toronto Zoo, or operating public health for two years.

How this subway decision was made, as was the decision to run the Spadina subway extension to a mall in Vaughan, sets to rest the fantasy that our largest infrastructure investments are selected on the basis of serving the most people at least cost. It’s not about ridership, technology, or care-

ful planning. It’s all about politics.

While politics must remain an essential part of public decision-making, the current mentality of winnertake-all leaves few winners: certainly not those who will pay for inefficient and ineffective transit for decades.

Conversely, those areas without aggressive backers yet with compelling cases for transit will be stuck. Think not only about Rexdale or Malvern, but also downtown, which so desperately needs a relief line.

Clearly the way out of this binary approach is for our political leadership to leave something on the table for others. It is not an approach advocated by practitioners of wedge issues, or for those in a minority government, but it is within our great Canadian tradition. And over time, it is the best way to deliver transit.

Subway extension: time for Scarborough to talk of forgiveness?

T

here will be property tax increases. We can expect congestion on the Bloor-Danforth subway line growing to a human traffic jam by the time trains reach Yonge and Bloor.

Buses will be the booby prize for priority neighbourhoods promised stops on a light rail line.

Yet raise a cheer,

Those of us who take the Scarborough Rapid Transit (RT) line to the Scarborough Town Centre

will no longer face the insult of sporadic service and several escalator rides at the Kennedy station transfer to the BloorDanforth subway line.

hang tight as the subway wheels around and heads back west beneath the condo-tower-shaded pavement, right back to Yonge Street.

But let us not get ahead of ourselves, Scarborough.

For now it is enough that we are building a subway – one that replaces that clanking, wheezing toychoo-choo-train insult of a conveyance, the Scarborough RT. It is, let’s be honest, almost more of an affront than no transit at all.

The new subway will be less of an affront than that, surely.

If all goes according to the latest, cobbledtogether plan, the threestop subway to Sheppard will in fact be a proper apology: a $3-billion box of chocolates from neglectful old city hall, begging forgiveness for staying out late and spending all Scarborough’s hard-earned money on

lattes and film festivals and parades and fancy waterfronts.

So Scarborough, subway in hand, might it perhaps be time that we offered up some proper forgiveness?

Perhaps we should abandon that narrative that has so long defined Scarborough: that it is forever treated as Toronto’s poor relation, living with naught but the threadbare hand-me-downs and the withering contempt of its so-called betters.

Glenn De Baeremaeker, the Scarborough Centre councillor who, along with TTC chair Karen Stintz, helped push his colleagues to abandon the multi-stop light rail line to travel that route, suggested Monday that the subway “will bring Scarborough into the family, finally.”

So yes, forgiveness. That is what family does.

Which means that when it next becomes necessary for Toronto to expand

Should the light rail lines that are also to be built in Scarborough – along Eglinton and Sheppard avenues – turn out to be more help than hindrance, it might be gracious to say so.

Grievance, complaint, anger and envy: these are surely feelings of the past now, at least in Scarborough.

Surely, the subway to Sheppard has made it all better.

“I’m flabbergasted. I wasn’t expecting so many people,” he said. “It proves to me we’ve created a community here.”

Local school trustee Harout Manougian (Ward 17, Don Valley East) hosted the meeting, bringing in school board staff to answer questions from the community.

Andrew Gowdy, TDSB manager of planning, made a presentation noting that Mallow Centre, which closed as a school in 1981 due to declining enrolment, was identified by the board this past June as surplus to the needs of the public school board.

He explained the decision to sell Mallow Centre was based on several reasons, including that nearby existing schools (Norman Ingram P.S., Greenland P.S., Don Mills M.S. and Don Mills C.I.) are within walking distance and large enough to accommodate more students should enrolment increase.

Mallow Centre is also the smallest site (4.3 acres) in the area, added Gowdy, and it would be inefficient to reopen and operate the 57-year-old school building for TDSB use.

In case of significant growth

in local enrolment, Gowdy said Overland Learning Centre is the “contingency plan,” which is currently used for adult ESL classes, and can be reopened as a school if necessary.

The board voted in June to approve paying for higher priority capital projects as well as $3 billion in deferred maintenance backlog by selling some of the TDSB school properties.

But upset residents argued Mallow Centre should remain open, especially with La Citadelle generating revenue for the TDSB through rent payments.

Patricia Uribe, a community resident and teacher at La Citadelle, expressed frustration over the lack of community consultation before the decision to declare Mallow Centre a surplus school.

“We started the initiative to rally the community to stop the sale of the school,” said Uribe, adding they already distributed about 4,000 flyers and collected 500 signatures on a petition.

Many residents feared they would lose the green space if the school property is sold to developers.

“Just leave this space alone as it is,” said Chih Dong, who has no children attending the school but noted the school’s

value to the community. “Let the community flourish. I will say I’ll fight to the end.”

Student Neelesh Thakur asked the trustee what would happen to him and his friends if they closed the school.

“Once the school is gone, where am I supposed to play?” said Neelesh Thakur, a Grade 8 student who has attended La Citadelle for five years. “Where am I supposed to hang out?”

Manougian said he voted to declare Mallow Centre a surplus school based on the knowledge that La Citadelle could be one of the bidders to buy the property.

Shirley Hoy, CEO of Toronto Lands Corporation – set up by the TDSB to professionally manage, lease and sell TDSB assets – said there’s a two-step process in selling any surplus properties, which follows provincial regulations.

The first is that it must be offered for 90 days to other public sector organizations first, which include other publicly funded school boards and the City of Toronto. If there’s no interest, the second step is to offer the property in the open market at fair market value.

The 90-day window in which any public sector organization can purchase the property will close Dec. 4.

Condo fire blamed on cigarette FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com An early morning fire yesterday at 23 Hollywood Ave. was caused by an improperly discarded cigarette, fire officials said.

The two-alarm blaze broke out on a 17th floor balcony of the Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue highrise condominium just after 2 a.m., said Capt. Adrian Ratushniak of Toronto Fire Services.

That floor was evacuated, and the fire was contained to one unit, he said, adding emergency crews left the scene shortly before 5 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

Metroland Media Toronto reporter Mike Adler, who lives in the building, said he was woken by the fire alarm and security over

the intercom, advising residents to vacate. But shortly afterwards, security came back on to say residents should stay put, unless they had a problem in their unit, in which case to call 911.

“I saw nothing but black smoke out the window,” he said.

After putting his cat in a carrier, Adler went into the hallway of his 26th-floor unit and saw several residents looking unsure how to proceed, he said.

After calling 911 from the hallway, Adler went back inside his unit.

“I was scared,” he said. “It was like chewing on smoke out there.

I wasn’t sure what command to follow.”

An eight-year tenant of the condo and original owner of the unit, Adler said hearing the fire

alarm is a common occurrence in the building, noting there was a false alarm almost 24 hours prior to Wednesday’s fire.

“But it has never been accompanied by a command to get out,” he said.

Ratushniak said information on what to do in the case of a highrise fire can be found on Toronto Fire Services’ website, but ultimately it’s up to residents to decide if they should stay or leave.

“If you can leave, leave,” he said.

“If you can’t, seal the door and wait for help. It’s a call the resident has to make themselves.”

Damage to the unit and building repair is estimated at $135,000.

Charity luncheon benefits women touched by cancer

Fundraiser in North York for Life After Breast Cancer FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com As owner of Premier Jour Fine Lingerie, Alicia Vianga is surrounded by garments that accentuate the female form.

Knowing how women link breasts with femininity, Vianga started up Life After Breast Cancer last year, a charity that helps women with limited financial resources be outfitted with bras, compression camisoles and breast prostheses post-mastectomy at no cost.

To help raise funds for services provided by Life After Breast Cancer, Vianga is hosting a fundraising luncheon Sunday at Grand Luxe Event Boutique, 3125 Bayview Ave., with all funds going directly to the charity. The luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The luncheon’s goal is to

raise enough money for bras and prostheses for 100 women; it costs about $500 to outfit one person.

“I have seen enough women who have had breast cancer who cannot pay for basic needs,” said Vianga when asked why she started the charity. “The little money they have is used to buy medications. They are stressed because of the lack of financial resources.”

About 50 women have been fitted with post-mastectomy garments since the beginning of the year, and another 20 are on a wait list, she said, adding the women have ranged in age from mid-20s to mid-70s.

“The feedback from women has been amazing,” Vianga said. “It’s a life-changing experience for them. As women, as we grow up, our breasts become everything. The way we dress has a lot to do with

our breasts. When you hear the news you have breast cancer, it’s a lot to digest. When they are removed, a lot of women can’t deal with that aspect.

They can’t find (garments that will give them) symmetry or look like they did before.

I don’t like to use the word normal, but women say they look normal again.”

Though her family hasn’t been affected by breast cancer, Vianga, whose shop is on St. Clair Avenue West, said almost everyone has been touched by the disease in some way.

“People don’t know how expensive (post-surgery) is,” she said. “They don’t know what it can do to a family. It’s important to raise awareness and raise funds. We need support, come out to our event.”

As you listen to the score you will hear notes and phrases that echo Larson’s score for Rent, but Tick, Tick... BOOM! can and does stand very effectively on its own.

Angelwalk Theatre and Newface Entertainment deserve sustained applause for the highly successful efforts in bringing this fascinating show to life.

������� ������� NAME: Olivia Chow CURRENT POSITION: New Democratic Party Member of Parliament for Trinity-Spadina BIOGRAPHY: Olivia Chow came to Canada from Hong Kong with her family in 1970. She was first elected as a school trustee in 1985 then was elected to Metropolitan Toronto Council in 1991 along with her husband, fellow New Democrat Jack Layton.

The pair was elected to Toronto Council at amalgamation, where Chow worked as council’s children’s advocate. Chow ran twice for the federal seat in Trinity-Spadina before joining Layton, then leader of the NDP, in Ottawa in 2005. Following Layton’s death in 2011, Chow has continued as MP for Trinity-Spadina.

NAME: Rob Ford CURRENT POSITION: Mayor of Toronto BIOGRAPHY: The son of former Conservative MPP and Etobicoke businessman Doug Ford Sr., Ford first joined Toronto Council in 2000 as councillor for Ward 2 (Etobicoke North) and became mayor in 2010. Ford has made a name attacking what he sees as government waste and personally returning calls from residents. He has also been at the centre of a litany of controversies including allegations of drug use.

NAME: Shelley Carroll CURRENT POSITION: City Councillor, Don Valley East BIOGRAPHY: A former community activist, Shelley Carroll got her start in politics as a public school trustee in 2000, finishing her single term there as co-chair of the TDSB. In 2003, she was elected to Toronto Council in Ward 33 (Don Valley East). After spending her first term on council chairing the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, Carroll was picked for budget chair in 2006 and was a major ally of thenmayor David Miller. When he announced he wasn’t running in 2010, the long-time Liberal considered a run but decided against it early in the election year. Through this term of council, Carroll has been one of Mayor Rob Ford’s sharper critics.

NAME: Karen Stintz CURRENT POSITION: EglintonLawrence Councillor and Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission BIOGRAPHY: Karen Stintz was elected to Toronto Council in 2003, after famously answering an advertisement from a local ratepayer organization seeking a candidate to run against incumbent Ann Johnston. Stintz considered and rejected a run for mayor in 2010. Instead, she became chair of the Toronto Transit Commission, where she earned Mayor Rob Ford’s enmity opposing his Sheppard subway plan in favour of the existing light rail plan, then in 2013 championed another Scarborough subway – along the Scarborough RT line.

NAME: Adam Vaughan CURRENT POSITION: City Councillor, TrinitySpadina BIOGRAPHY: Son of the late CITY TV journalist and politician Colin Vaughan, Adam Vaughan worked as a television journalist at CBLT and CITY TV. During his tenure covering City Hall, then-mayor Mel Lastman famously threatened to have him “killed” because he believed (falsely) that Vaughan had leaked information about a shoplifting incident involving Lastman’s wife. Vaughan ran for Toronto Council in 2006 in the ward left vacant by Olivia Chow, winning the race against NDP candidate Helen Kennedy. He has been one of Mayor Rob Ford’s most vociferous critics since 2010.

NAME: John Tory CURRENT POSITION: Chair, CivicAction and Newstalk 1010 radio host BIOGRAPHY: John Tory got his start in politics working for former Ontario Premier Bill Davis and has worked for former prime ministers Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell, before leading Rogers Media and Rogers Cable. After coming in second in the 2003 mayor’s race, Tory went on to lead the Ontario Progressive Conservative party, then host a popular afternoon radio show on Newstalk 1010. Tory supporters made preparations for a second mayoralty run in 2010, but he backed out of the race early that year.

NAME: David Soknacki CURRENT POSITION: Columnist with Metroland Media Toronto, President of Ecom Food Industries Corporation BIOGRAPHY: David Soknacki is a Scarborough business owner, whose company Ecom Food Industries imports spices. He served a single term on the old Scarborough Council from 1994 to 1997, then returned to politics in 1999, filling former Scarborough mayor and councillor Frank Faubert’s seat in a byelection following his death. In 2003, he was Mayor David Miller’s budget chief, and oversaw the first three budgets of that administration. In 2006, he left politics to return to his business and chair the Parc Downsview Park’s board.

NAME: Denzil Minnan-Wong CURRENT POSITION: Don Valley East City Councillor, Chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee BIOGRAPHY: Denzil Minnan-Wong is a veteran of municipal politics in North York. He was first appointed to North York Council in 1994 to fill a vacant seat in Don Mills. A long-time Progressive Conservative, Minnan-Wong was among former mayor David Miller’s more active critics and is one of Mayor Rob Ford’s most trusted allies. He currently sits on the Executive Committee and chairs the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. While he is loyal to Ford, he has differed from the mayor on occasion – notably, in not supporting a casino in downtown Toronto earlier this year.

But as to the challenge of running a winner?

“A simple thing,” he says.

“You have to have a message that you’re communicating that the plurality of voters accept. And behind the scenes it’s really simple. You have to identify your voters, know who they are and get them out to vote.”

That in essence was the formula Kouvalis used to propel Ford across the finish line, in a race that was considered George Smitherman’s to lose in early 2010.

A blitz of robocalls, telephone town halls and shoe-leather to identify those voters who agreed with Ford’s mantra of stopping the “gravy train” of out-of-control public spending, and make sure they came out on election day. By election day, the Ford campaign had a detailed list of supporters who allowed an army of about 4,000 volunteers to make sure those people came out.

It’s unlikely that list will be of as much use four years later, Kouvalis acknowledges, given what he calls “the distractions” of Ford’s current term. But based on polling data collected over that term, the larger divide that his data indicated continues to persist: Ford’s support is strongest in suburban communities, and weak in the downtown core.

Andrea Adario, who served as press secretary on David Miller’s successful 2003 campaign, says any contender in 2014 is going to have to address that divide.

“The city needs a mayor who’s really going to unite most of the municipalities post amalgamation in a way we haven’t seen yet,” she says.

Adario said given the gruelling pace of a Toronto election, any candidate is also going to need stamina.

Once nominations open on Jan. 3, 2014, candidates will have to balance fundraising, and low-level campaigning with what has historically been a gruelling number of debates: sometimes as many as three or four a week as the campaign heats up.

“It was crazy,” recalls Adario. “We were debating nightly for sure.. . I would say there was a minimum of four a week. Sometimes more.”

On his radio show, Ford has indicated he doesn’t intend to attend nearly as many debates as he did in 2010.

“There are risks as well as benefits,” says Adario. “You risk having the conversation unfold without you.... but he’s shown that he knows how to be disciplined and stay on message and he is a formidable campaigner.

If the formula of speaking directly to voters and campaigning hard and endlessly repeating your simplistic message has worked for him in the past, it might work for him again.

But it all depends on who else is running and whatever revelations we might have.”

Which leads to one other very simple truth about mayors’ races in Toronto.

“There are no rules,” says Kouvalis.

“Everything is unique, absolutely.”

Midnight is learning manners while waiting for a new family

T

his month you’ll meet Midnight, a friendly black Labrador mix who is a quick learner in his manners classes, and you’ll also be introduced to two little piggies that are looking for love that lasts.

Midnight is a one-yearold neutered black Labrador mix who weighs in at approximately 55 pounds.

He is extremely friendly and charming with his human friends and loves everybody he meets.

However he is not so fond of other dogs. He is currently in training classes so he can learn to be calm and not get overly excited when meeting and passing dogs on his walks. Off leash parks are not a good idea for Midnight.

Midnight is a clever pup and is responding quickly to his training lessons. He will need an adopter who can continue his training and one that is active and willing to provide adequate exercise and play time for this handsome young dog.

Midnight enjoys walks, jogging and can even go inline skating (with a human that is!). Because of his size and strength a family with no young children would be a better fit for him.

Its role is to represent the needs and concerns of people with disabilities and seniors who use the TTC. It provides guidance and policy advice to the Commission on issues pertaining to the ways and means of improving fixed route (i.e., TTC bus, subway, and streetcar) and Wheel-Trans services.

Five (5) volunteer positions on the committee are open to residents of the City of Toronto who have disabilities, as well as, seniors or others who have a knowledge of and an interest in, accessible transportation issues. Applicants must be willing to make a commitment of a minimum of 7 hours per week, to attend meetings normally held during regular business hours.

Interested applicants must attend an information session at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, to obtain more information about the committee and its function.
