Sale businesses face rate inconsistencies TNT News Yasin Chinembiri in Sale to see what they had was well under the £12,000, Rubina Businesses in Sale are raising awareness of the inequalities they are facing regarding their business rate taxes. Whilst some businesses in the local area are facing rate increases, others seem unaffected. From 1 April, small businesses will see their Rate Relief (SBRR) double from 50% to 100% and their threshold rise to £15,000. It has been reported that local councils have also been given a fund of £300 million in relief to help those worst affected. TNT spoke to businesses

to say about the inconsistent tax rates and how they were affecting each business. Minikin Paint a Pot and Baby Imprints Studio, Minkin, has been open since 2010. Based in Sale, the business has been adversely affected “massively”, its owner Claire [pictured] told TNT. “We used to have relief for the past two years. It was a European funding relief. We got a discount of £1,500. We lost that so that took a hit on us last year because we were paying our full rates bill”, she said. “As a small business owner with a rateable value that

I’d hoped that through this valuation, I would remain under 12 [£12,000] and therefore get 100% relief. What has happened to me as that I have been valued outside of that, I have no relief”. Not all businesses have been aware of the rates increments due to take effect this April so Claire set up a group for business-owners to open some communication between businesses and the local council. The purpose for this is to have “one voice fighting it [the rates increases] rather than just individuals”, Claire said. Owner of Sale Dry Cleaners,

Raja also echoed Claire’s sentiments. She told TNT that she is not getting much for what she is paying for with the council. “The parking has gone up. There’s not enough parking in the area. We have no bin facilities as shops. We are nto even generating the business [required] to pay the rates”, Rubina said. TNT also spoke to local residents who cited that they can “appreciate” the businessowners’ grievances. “If the businesses believe that they are not getting the services they are paying for, the hike in the new business rates couldn’t be seen as justifiable”, a local resident said.

Chainlink is a community interest company (CIC). They offer bike repairs, bike rides and job training for anyone who needs it — especially for those with learning difficulties or mental health problems in the local community. Officially formed in 2012, Chainlink has been run by Neil as a volunteer led pop up bike stall. In Trafford, he works from a storage container outside of the Wellbeing centre— he can also be found outside Wellbeing centres in Partington, Sale and Timperley. Their mission is simple: to provide an environment for community groups to work with shared values and promote general well-being. Initiatives like Chainlink provide the support that is much needed by so many who suffer with mental illness in Manchester. The group was originally set up by another volunteer, Steve Higgin. It was Steve who first taught Neil the skills that he would eventually pass on to others; creating a cycle whereby locals would put something back into their community. Mike Gordon, one of Chainlink’s regular volunteers at Trafford, said that “Neal has taught me a lot, I feel like I could walk into any bike store and get a job there”. The project has motivated people to not only learn the necessary skills to re-enter the workplace, but also to create a social outlet where they can feel good about themselves.

Hi all, and welcome to my monthly sound off,

Whilst our departure from the EU is underway since May signed Article 50, there is no doubt that the unsavoury taste that Brexit leaves will linger among many, long after the divorce is finalised. Let’s ponder over a few queries. How many of you that ostracised, ‘unfriended or unfollowed’ friends and family after Brexit have made a U-turn? Only to delete and ostracise them yet again when you found out they were Trump supporters too? As for Trump, he has suffered yet another defeat, even when his party dominates the house. ‘Obamacare’, as a point of reference, will stay for the foreseeable future. Obama’s legacy will stay intact and hopefully millions of Americans can have affordable healthcare, whilst May seems oblivious to the crisis our NHS is facing. Reporters claim that we are more divided as a nation and globally than ever before, even more than during the world wars. Shocking, considering the advancements in education and rise globalisation. We need to avoid our political beliefs getting in the way of sharing, working and living cohesively with our fellow man.

Now that spring is officially here and International Women’s day and Mother’s Day have come and gone, the only days that officially celebrate women have come to an end – boo! Let’s move swiftly on to our Easter celebrations. Firstly, we should acknowledge all spiritual festivals and appreciate what things are given to us all by a higher being, however let’s celebrate the gift of family, friends and especially children now. Eat, drink, be merry; have wine or some fish and chocolate, not all together though, as that just is another level of gross! Keep your eyes peeled for the following treats in both editions. Alzheimer’s Society raising awareness in Trafford Two arrests made over

Alzheimer’s Society Trafford

The Alzheimer’s Society is a national charity which works to ensure that people with dementia are treated fairly. TNT recently spoke to Rebecca Trower, a Dementia Support worker, based at Alzheimer’s Society Trafford. Alzheimer’s Society Trafford works closely with people who have Dementia, whilst also supporting carers. Rebecca said that the society work to promote fairness, raising awareness of the disease and its effects. In Trafford, those affected by Dementia can access a range of services including, over-the-phone support and home visits. The Alzheimer’s Society Trafford also provides emotional support, encouraging, motivating and advising those affected. A ‘Singing for the Brain’ group takes place at Old Trafford’s St John’s Centre. Rebecca says that the session is based on the theory that music and song lyrics are “good stimulation”. These sessions can help with “general well-being and confidence”. Group members find it “very uplifting to be singing together in a group”. The uplifting society motivates

those diagnosed with Dementia to overcome barriers. They motivate them by promoting “the idea of living well with dementia”. “We work hard to overcome the stigma, that once you have a diagnosis of dementia that’s the end”. With the right support, information and a good network around them, those with Dementia can live a healthy life. The society combats isolation, encouraging those with Dementia to

become involved with community activities. People must also be aware of how the wider society can help those diagnosed. Patience from society is needed. If society was more “friendly” and “tolerant”, people with dementia wouldn’t be so afraid to go out there. In the UK 850,000 people are affected by Dementia.

Flixton’s The Rainband pour in donations The Rainband have made a generous donation to a campaign fighting to protect Flixton’s Green Belt. Five-piece Indie-Rock band, The Rainband, has donated £2000 to a campaign launched to stop development plans. These development plans hope to see the building of houses on the Green Belt. Trafford Council have proposed the building of 750 houses on the site. This is part of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) strategy. The strategy aims to remove Flixton’s well-loved land areas from green belt status. Land areas which are to be removed will include the Flixton Road side of the William Roe golf course. The Flixton Playing field – along with its 7 football pitches – and Flixton Park will also be removed. Campaigners argue that the proposed developments will have a negative impact on local

infrastructure and the environment. Flixton, Urmston and Davyhulme Future Planning, are fighting the plans, having set up a £5000 appeal. The appeal takes the fight to the council. The group has employed a planner to assess alternative sites. The group had raised a total of £3000 when they received an unexpected and generous donation. The surprising donation came from The Rainband, who joined the fight to protect the environment in their hometown. On the JustGiving donation page the band wrote, “Our hometown means more to us than words can say”. “Let’s hope the ‘rain’ keeps falling on the green belt for many years to come”, the band wrote. The talented five-piece band encouraged campaigners to “Fight Til the end”. Michelle McGrath of Flixton, Urmston and Davyhulme Future Planning said that she and her fellow

A Heywood man is being presented with an award for bravery after helping a man who was on fire. Valery Cretol, a road gritter on duty in Harpurhey on 14 January, noticed a large fire ball opposite his vehicle. “At first, I thought it was a bin on fire but, after looking a bit closer I could tell what was happening and instinct took over”, he said. Without thinking of potential harm, 43-year-old Valery ran over to the man who had set fire to himself. He quickly rolled the man in an attempt to stop the burning and contacted emergency services. Valery, who is originally from France, stopped the flames as best he could. Two passers-by helped after being flagged down by Valery. Emergency services quickly attended the scene but unfortunately, the man on fire sadly died. Valery was recently presented with the Chief Constable’s Citizens Commendation for his act of selfless bravery. He received his award at a ceremony at GMP’s Hough End Complex.

TNT News According to reports, the University of Manchester has the highest amount of burglaries outside London. Within just a one-mile radius of the main campus, 2016 saw 822 reported burglaries. This staggering figure suggests that one in three students are likely to become a victim of crime. A study from locksmithservice. co.uk looked at 25 universities outside London. The study revealed how many burglaries had occurred within a one-mile radius from the central point of each campus. From January to November in 2016, Leeds saw 799 student burglaries and Sheffield reported just over 700. The lowest university town was Durham with only 96. A survey, which received

2,000 responses, found that 64% of students admitted to leaving valuable possessions in plain sight. The survey also found that 48% of students don’t lock the main door before everyone goes to sleep. John Leech, Former Withington MP and leader of ‘Manchester Students Stay Safe’ campaign said: “It’s becoming very easy for students and their homes to be targeted by thieves and burglars. “I want every student to feel safe, secure and have the best possible experience living, studying and working in Manchester. Having their home burgled can be a really distressing experience, even if they’re out when it happens”.

GMP holding body parts of victims of crime TNT News Reports have revealed that Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been holding the body parts of victims of crime. The relatives of victims of crime have been informed that GMP has been holding body parts of victims. The body parts have been secretly held for over a decade without relatives knowing. Body parts have reportedly been taken from 180 victims of crime from Greater Manchester. The news was revealed following the Alder Hey Scandal. GMP has been contacting relatives to determine how they wish to dispose of the remains of victims of crime. GMP has dealt with the issue sensitively and started to visit victims’ families in September 2016. GMP said: “the decision to contact them was not taken lightly”.

Many of the body parts held, predate September 2006. In September 2006, legislation was passed banning the storage of human tissue without the consent of family members. The news of the holding has caused family members of victims of crime to experience heartbreak once more. Family members buried victims without knowing that their remains have been kept. A local media publication reported that the mother of a victim of gun crime has received her son’s remains. The teenage victim was shot in 2003. His mother must now deal with his remaining body parts.

Within the meeting, senior councilors will be asked to give the plan its final goahead. The project in question plans to boost public access. In doing so, they are hoping to ensure the building and Albert Square continue to play a role at the heart of the city. The Town Hall will be 140 years old this year. Despite remaining structurally sounds, signs of its age have begun to show. Rape victims will be spared the ordeal of facing their alleged attacker in court under new reforms by the justice secretary. From September 2017, their crossexamination will be able to be prerecorded and then played to a jury during the trial, Liz Truss said. The roll-out, which was not scheduled to start until the beginning of 2018, has been brought forward in agreement with senior judges. ‘Attitudes to sex crimes and victims have changed beyond all recognition in our lifetime, and rape prosecutions are now at record levels,’ Ms Truss said. ‘With more victims now finding the confidence to come forward, I am determined to make their path to justice swifter and less traumatic. ‘This will not reduce the right to a fair trial, but will make sure victims of these abhorrent crimes are protected and able to provide their possible evidence.’ The Ministry of Justice said the move followed a successful pilot pre-recording the evidence of child victims of sex offences which showed they felt less pressure and were better able to recall events.

TNT News A leading gynaecologist has said that mums-to-be should be free to have abortions if the foetus is not the gender they were hoping for. Professor Wendy Savage said making women go through with the pregnancy could cause psychological harm. Professor Savage is a voting member of the British Medical Association Council. She insisted sex-selective abortions where a ‘myth’ and said hospitals that refused to tell parents the sex of their foetus were wrong. But she told The Mail on Sunday: ‘If a woman does not want to have a foetus who is one sex or the other, forcing her is not going to be good for the eventual child, and it’s not going to be good for the mother’s mental health’. Conservative MP Mark Field said:

‘Suggesting that women should be able to abort babies solely because they happen to be either male, or more usually female, is utterly abhorrent. ‘To have someone like Wendy Savage with her

extreme views at the heart of the BMA is a very worrying sign.’ The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (Bpas) said it was “totally appalled” by the Mail on Sunday’s front page. Bpas said the front page is “demonising Wendy Savage, a doctor who has devoted her life to supporting pregnant women”. The comments from Professor Savage, who is retired from practice, come after a Bill to decriminalise all terminations carried out before 24 weeks passed its first hurdle in the Commons last week. Pro-life campaigners fear it will fuel an abortion-on-demand culture and lead to more being done after 24 weeks.

Speaking out, Mr Burnham, Labour’s Mayoral candidate and the bookies’ faourite, said: “It is simply wrong that bus services can be chopped and changed at the whim of the operator. “People will lose confidence in using the service if they’re not sure whether a bus will turn up or not. “Bus services throughout Greater Manchester are too often run for the profit of the operators and not for the benefit of the passengers. “If I am elected as Mayor on May 4, I will use new powers to make buses more affordable, more reliable and work in the public interest”.

Why ‘the nanny’ and not the wife?

TNT News William Hulme’s Grammar School students will have an out-of-thisworld experience when a famous astronaut visits the school. Mike Foale, was born and educated in the UK and moved to America in the 1980s to pursue his dreams. He joined NASA in 1983 and was accepted as an astronaut candidate in 1987. Spain appoints first ‘Minister of Sex’ TNT News Spain has appointed a ‘sex tsar’ to help boost the country’s “catastrophically low” birth rate. The country reported a higher number of deaths than births for the first time last year. This prompted the government to take action. Young couples have reportedly blamed being “too tired after a full day at work” and “late night” for the decrease. Statistics revealed Spanish women claim they would like two or more children, but figures from 2015 show a different picture. The Senado de Espana has tasked demographic expert Edelmira Barreira with sorting out the problem. Basically, Barreira’s chief responsibility will be ‘to get busy between the sheets’, a commentator said. Statistics revealed Spanish women between 18-49 reportedly had an average of 1.3 children in 2015. This is below the European Union’s (EU) figure of 1.58. While many EU countries have

A report with an International Relations professor went wrong when it was interrupted by two children. Professor Robert Kelly was in a live BBC interview, discussing South Korea when his two children briefly interrupted. Kelly managed to remain composed when the children barged in. The children’s mother realised they were missing and frantically entered the room, dragging the children out. The video went viral, gaining millions of views. Twitter users described it to be “the funniest thing the BBC has ever broadcast”. However, the broadcast didn’t just gain major views; it ignited a debate about racism, sexism and stereotyping. Many were quick to assume that Kelly’s South Korean wife Jung- a Kim was ‘the nanny’. Reading her panicked behaviour incorrectly, many joked that ‘the nanny’ would lose her job over the mishap. “Immigrant nanny probably got chewed out / fired”, one Twitter user wrote. Such biased assumptions resulted in many social media users being accused of holding ‘racist’ views. Many believed that this only highlighted that there are widespread racist stereotypes about Asian women. It is suggested that they can only fit into roles where they hold an inferior status. One twitter user wrote, “Why is everyone assuming that the woman in that hilarious BBC interview the nanny? “ Why isn’t it his

TNT News A Texas woman has made a huge difference by helping a homeless man transform his life. For three years, Victor Hubbard lived on the corner of a street in Kemah, Texas, US. He was waiting and hoping that his mother would return and rescue him from his unfortunate circumstances. Many people passed Victor in the streets but were not concerned enough to make a difference. This changed when Ginger Sprouse decided to take Victor’s case of homelessness further. Sprouse saw Hubbard at least four times a day and always wondered why he was on the streets. In December 2016, Sprouse decided to ask Hubbard about his homelessness. “It really began to concern me and then I talked to a lot of people in the community”, Sprouse said. A lot of people in the community had wondered why Hubbard was homeless. Hubbard opened up to Sprouse about his background. Hubbard revealed that he struggles with mental illness and was without a place to live. His mother dropped him off at the corner of the street. She told him to wait for her, she would be coming back. Hubbard believed his mother and had been waiting for her to return. Sprouse was touched by his story and was determined to transform Hubbard’s life. The inspirational wife and mother shared Hubbard’s story on Facebook – the community then got involved. Dozens offered to help. Fans of the page secured an eye-exam. Hubbard was also given clothes and food. Sprouse cooked meals, washed clothes and welcomed Hubbard into her home. She also set up appointments with a mental health professional. In addition to this she set up a GoFundMe page. In two months, $14,700 [£11,895] has been raised. Ms Sprouse and her family are currently working to get him sheltered accommodation.

Goodreads

This is a ‘timeless’ novel about a woman who bridged the gaps between East and West during a tumultuous era. The astonishing tale is inspired by the life of Sai Jinhua – who to this day is still a Chinese legend. Sai Jinhua lived and loved during the days of the Qing dynasty.

The year is 1881; seven-year-old Jinhua is left orphaned after her mandarin father’s summary execution. Jinhua is sold to a brothel and ordered to work as a ‘money tree’. She is left to endure the worst.

Held on the last Tuesday of every month, Pudding Club sets a decadent 5 course desert extravaganza. Each course is paired with an accompanying tea, carefully selected to compliment the flavour of each dish. We started with a warm white chocolate and banana tart, paired with the herbal infusion of pure life wellbeing tea. Whilst being presented with each course, we are given an informative talk regarding the tea’s origin, its health benefits and a glimpse as to why it is the perfect match for our pudding. Listening to Emma, the General Manager and Julia, who run Pudding Club, it becomes clear that the heart and soul of LEAF lies in its tea.

With his captivating acoustic folk rock sounds, Tariq B is the third artist to appear on TNT’s upcoming artist segment. The compellingly forceful music of classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Doors were the initial influences of the artist. These were the same influences that contributed to the formation of a band Tariq and fellow musicians started at college. Within ‘The Funk Pumpkins’, Tariq performed in a variety of places including the O2 in Birmingham. His experiences at University in Plymouth lead him to start his solo project and career. It was here, in a small and welcoming city where his following really began to take flight. Continuing with further education, Tariq B is currently studying within the city. He takes inspiration from “the vibrant nature of Manchester” along with our city’s upand-coming prospects. By combining his talent, passion and education, he currently calls Manchester his home. Tariq is regularly found at thriving open mic night spots including Revolution Oxford Road, The Thirsty Scholar and The Northern. Black Dog Ball Room in the Northern Quarter is also a much-loved performance venue. Simply Red and his blue-eyed soul instrumentation has been a favourite since Tariq was a young boy in Pakistan. In addition, Tupac’s lyrical exposure of minority persecution, although being a different style and genre, have influenced Tariq’s

The rapper said “Chris brown manager called my manager last night and said the fight is off”. “He’s not signing contract. Don’t ask me about [it] no more” Soulja, tweeted. “I aint gon say... he shook or nothing. I’m just gon say he don’t wanna fight. simple”. The rapper told followers that he couldn’t force the singer to sign the contract. Soulja Boy had made an earlier claim that the singer was ‘scared’ to fight him. TNT Entertainment US girl group TLC have announced their first ever UK show. The band is coming to London’s Koko on 9 May. Tickets will be on sale this Friday on 24 March. Since the death of member Lisa ‘Left-Eye’ Lopes in 2002, the group now comprised of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas stepped back from the public eye. Lopes passed away after a car accident that took place while she was vacationing in Honduras. In 2015, they launched a Kickstarter to help fund a new album. The campaign raised $430,255 and remains to be the most-funded campaign in the company’s history. US pop singer Katy Perry was one of the first backers of the project. Prizes for backers

included video dance tutorials, signed vinyl and CD’s. Additionally there was a TLC scrap book, voicemails, a slumber party and an exclusive photoshoot with the group. The Waterfalls hitmakers’ previous record, 2002’s ‘3D’, was released seven months after the death of Lopes. The new album is set for release later this year, with a single set to be announced in the coming weeks. In 2016, veteran A&R and record producer Ron Fair gave an update on the album. “It’s old soul music. It’s ’90s throwback music. It’s vintage TLC and I can tell you that their vocals sound exactly the way they did the last time you heard them”. Mr Fair said in

an interview with Renman Music & Business Live. He added: “This is gonna become a question of what are they talking about, what are the lyrics, what are the beats they’ve chosen. And I’m very excited for the world to hear.” The duo has already played a series of live shows as a duo. This includes sold-out gigs at arenas in Japan, as well as shows in the US and Australia. The group, named the best-selling American girlgroup of all time, have sold over 65 million records worldwide. There is no Manchester date announced yet but TNT News will break the news to you, should it happen.

Vodafone is creating 2,100 jobs under a £2billion investment plan for its network and services. This is the network’s biggest recruitment drive in years, with Manchester holding the most of these new jobs. The telecoms giant will offer the new customer service roles over the next 24 months. About 800 jobs will be created at its centre in Manchester and 150 in Newark. Additionally, another 150 will be in Stokeon-Trent and 100 in Glasgow. Vodafone’s third-party customer service partners will also add 600 jobs in Newcastle upon Tyne. The company has also confirmed that about 200 in western Scotland and 100 in Cardiff. The chief executive Nick Jeffery said the new roles will make a real difference to the company’s customers. He added that it will make ‘a real difference to the communities that are the focus of our customer services investment’. ‘Our ambition is to give our customers the best experience possible, providing an outstanding level of service and support as we continue to invest in building the biggest and best network in Britain’. Vodafone has 18million customers and 12,500 staff in the UK. Culture, media and sport secretary Karen Bradley said the global firm ‘is demonstrating its confidence in the UK’. In October 2016, regulator Ofcom fined Vodafone £4.6m for “serious” breaches of consumer protection rules. This was the regulator’s largest fine for a telecoms operator.

Travel to the Trafford Centre is set to get easier as the Metrolink line to the shopping centre got the government’s go-ahead. The Metrolink line will take shoppers to the mall by 2020, following Transport Secretary Chris Grayling’s green light. Mr Grayling has granted Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) legal powers to build the new 3.4mile (5.5km) line under a Transport and Works Act order. Work on the £350m line is underway and it is expected that the line will be operational by 2020.

This year’s annual ‘Solace summit’ is set to be held at the Emirates Old Trafford between 1 and 3 November. Solace stands for the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and is the UK’s largest gathering of these individuals. 2017’s summit will see more than 300 chief executives and senior managers gather at the Manchester venue. The aims of the summit are to hold debates on topics such as the future of public services. By having these conversations, it can be ensured that policies are informed by the experienced members of the services.

Local reports have emerged of a £55m extension to be created at the Trafford Centre. According to owner intu’s annual results and report for 2016, the development will see a huge roof installed over Barton Square. The expansion will also create an extra 112,000 square feet of retail space at the shopping centre. To match the rest of the centre, the courtyard will bear a central glazed dome roof atop the building. There will be other developments in the shopping centre to help boost shops’ footfall and extend departments.
