Camera car increases children’s safety TNT News A new CCTV camera car is to be deployed outside Manchester schools, to help enforce parking safety and protect pupils from harm. The new car increases the city’s fleet of parking enforcement vehicles to three. It will collect the necessary evidence to issue £70 Penalty Charge Notices to drivers who break the law. Often, drivers park on school zigzag lines, which must be kept clear. The extra enforcement vehicle increases Manchester City Council’s support of schools in their efforts to
promote road safety to parents. Green End Primary School, on Burnage Lane, has experienced problems with parents parking illegally on zigzag lines outside the school. Head of School Jeffery Harriott says the deployment of CCTV cars has proved to be an effective way to improve the situation. Mr Harriott said: “Illegal parking on the zigzags is a massive problem and extremely unsafe for children crossing the road. “It blocks the view of people entering and exiting the school.
“We’ve done everything from sending letters home, to having teachers and pupils patrol outside in hi-vis jackets. He added that they have also had “a competition for pupils to design road safety banners. However, we find that when a CCTV car is deployed, it makes a huge difference”. “It’s simply about keeping the children safe. We need drivers to consider our pupils and the people who live on the surrounding roads and stop parking illegally outside our school.” The new car will work
seven days per week on school patrols. It will also detect untaxed vehicles and repeat parking fine evaders. It has been funded by reinvesting money raised through parking charges and fines. All surplus money from such fines and charges is ploughed back into parking services and highway improvement projects. Executive Member for the Environment, Councillor Angeliki Stogia, said: “Pupil safety is the top priority for schools across city. “When it comes to driving responsibly around schools, we know that the majority of parents and carers are doing the right thing”.
TNT News On a scorching Sunday in central Manchester, over 100,000 people gathered to watch the annual Manchester Day parade. This year’s event had taken on special significance, considering May’s terror attack at the city’s arena. The 22,000-strong procession was fronted by 22 young people, each bearing a balloon representing one of the 22 victims of the bombing. The group held a banner reading “Manchester remembers 22.05.17”. They were followed by uniformed members of the city’s emergency services, honouring their response to the attack. Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham was also among the thousands in attendance. “Today feels very poignant, doesn’t it? People are still thinking about the attack and just coming to terms with it really and the enormity of it. “But in the worst of times you see the best of people, and we’ve certainly seen what Greater Manchester is all about in the past month.” The parade featured 80 community groups, ranging from the Manchester Chinese Centre to the trans youth group Afternoon Tea. Also in attendance was the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service. It was watched by the biggest crowd in the event’s history. “It’s nice to see all the communities from around Manchester,” says Emily Donlevy, 21, a trainee tattoo artist from Bolton

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn hugged and comforted distraught relatives, praised emergency services. He also vowed to pursue ‘the truth’ behind the Grenfell Tower fire. Mr Corbyn has received huge praise from the public and ministers over his response to the Grenfell Tower inferno. Even Piers Morgan is praising Mr Corbyn as a shining example of “true leadership”. It is the opposite of what Conservatives leader Theresa May is getting for her ‘cold response’ to the victims and relatives. The Labour leader mingled with families, rescue workers and volunteers during a visit to the scene on Thursday 15 June. He was said to have stayed there for about an hour. Theresa May’s brief

Anthony and Dorretta’s wedding in Gorton Monastery Inspirational local couple, Anthony and Dorretta Hampson got married today, in a ceremony punctuated by elegance and a warm gleaming crowd of close friends and family members. The couple’s big day took place at the Gorton Monastery, which provided the perfect setting to mark the special day. With natural light from the high ceiling’s large panes flooding through to a décor befitting of a traditional fairy tale, Anthony
and Dorretta’s ceremony breathed new meaning to the term ‘perfect’. As some guests got teary-eyed, others calmly but gleefully photographed and filmed the hallmark of their wedding ceremony – the traditional exchanging of vows. Contained in these vows were sincere intentions for a married life filled with devotion and love, as the pair looked deeply into each other’s eyes, before the ring-exchanges and the following kiss. It
was ephemeral – you literally had to be present to have witnessed the sheer inexplicable beauty of the moment. Inspirational Dorretta Anthony, got in touch with The Nubian Times prior to his and Dorretta’s big day to inform and invite us to their treasured day. the same court on 20 July. The Prime Minister described the attack as a “terrible incident”. “All my thoughts are with those who have been injured, their loved ones and the emergency services on the scene”. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he had been in touch with local mosques, police and the council following the incident. The attack took place in his constituency and near his home. “My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this awful event,” Mr Corbyn added. It was the third major incident less than a month for London’s emergency services. Prior to this was the London Bridge attack and Grenfell Tower disaster, which killed at least 79 people.

Grenfell residents compile list of victims and survivors Newly formed Grenfell Tower residents’ groups have begun several investigations to compile lists of the victims and survivors of the London fire disaster. They have started the compilation amid ongoing concern that the police and council have been slow to release information about the death toll. Some survivors have even said they are being lied to. Sajad Jamalvatan, a biomedical engineering student who lived on the third floor of the block, has established a Whatsapp community of 86 families. From conversations with these residents, he is sceptical about the police death toll of 79 and believes that the actual number is likely to be above 120. Nonetheless, there is widespread acceptance that police and coroners are working in uniquely challenging conditions. They are unable to access parts of the building that are too
dangerous to enter. Whilst this is accepted, there is frustration among residents that officials have not released a number of those people who survived. Anger is rising over the lack of even an estimate of the numbers of people ordinarily resident in the block. Jamalvatan said he was trying to compile a database of survivors on behalf of his neighbours. “We were expecting the TMO [tenant management organisation] to do this list for us, but we don’t think they are willing to help us,” he said. He was referring to Kensington & Chelsea TMO, the body that looked after the block for the local authority. They said 145 hotel rooms have been provided to former residents, but they were unable to release a number

of survivors. Tottenham MP David Lammy, whose friend, the artist Khadija Saye, died in the fire, has repeatedly questioned the number of dead. He described the figure of 79 as “far, far too low”. He said that, the “failure to provide updates of the true number that died is feeding suspicion of a cover-up”.
Outrage over Theresa May’s response to Grenfell Test results on building materials in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster have revealed that 60 highrise blocks in 25 areas of England are unsafe, the government confirms. It is reported that 17 residential Manchester high-rises are to have their cladding removed. Local reports state that one of the buildings failed government tests, hence it is being taken down. The flats in Hulme, Rusholme, Levenshulme, Gorton and Wythenshawe are almost all run by the social landlord One Manchester. They are now being fully inspected to ensure other aspects of their fire safety do not fall short. There are no residents who have been evacuated because of the cladding failures so far. Instead they have been given 24-hour fire wardens while the material is stripped. The flats in question include Westcott Court, Duffield Court and Fulton Court in Hulme. Additionally Platt Court and Worsley Court in Rusholme are on the list too..
One Manchester recently posted on their website citing that a contractor has been appointed to remove the ACM cladding as soon as possible. “We are liaising with Manchester City Council and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service”, they said. “We all want to ensure that all necessary safety measures are in place to avoid the need for homes to be evacuated for any period. “Until additional safety measures are in place to enhance our existing arrangements, 24-hour security is now in operation in every tower block to provide a ‘wakeful watch’ to raise the alarm and manage the building evacuation in the event of a fire”. blocks that failed safety tests. Elsewhere in Manchester, 78 panels are being removed from one area of the Village 135 development in Wythenshawe. The new building has decorative cladding on its top levels in one part, and tests have shown it could be made of similar materials to those at Grenfell Tower. Other towers declared unsafe so far are in Portsmouth and Sunderland, as well as Norwich, Doncaster, Stocktonon-Tees and Plymouth.
Theresa May visited Grenfell Tower on Thursday 15 June but is facing heavy criticism for not speaking to any of the survivors or families searching for their missing loved ones. The prime minister instead met firefighters and police, thanking them for their efforts. She also stayed away from reporters on the scene. Grafitti was later seen on the estate that said: ‘Theresa May stay away’. In a sharp contrast, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn visited the survivors and family members of victims and those still missing. He was seen speaking to many of the survivors, relatives and praising emergency services. He hugged and comforted residents and distraught relatives. Many people have spoken about how Mr Corbyn is ‘genuinely concerned and sincerely cares about people affected’. One angry resident broke through a police cordon to criticise Theresa May’s decision not to meet survivors. Another resident said that even the Queen and the Duke of Cambridge met the victims and distraught relatives of the Grenfell Tower fire. ‘Theresa May was here but she didn’t speak to any of us’, the woman told Mr Corbyn. ‘She was s**t’. On her return to Downing Street, May announced a public inquiry into the cause of the fire. She said: ‘The response of the community has been extraordinary. ‘It has shown the great spirit of the people in response to a tragedy such as this. The government stands ready to provide every assistance to the emergency services and the local authorities’.

Twenty-two people, including seven children, died when suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated a suicide bomb at Grande’s concert on 22 May. The device was detonated as concert-goers began leaving her show at the Manchester Arena. Manchester’s £100m roads revival is underway Manchester City Council begins work to improve hundreds of Manchester’s roads in a new 5-year scheme. The Council has started to implement the £100m highways investment programme. More than £15m will be invested across the next 12 months to fund the resurfacing of some of the city’s key roads. Roads included are Cheetham Hill Road and Palatine Road. Alongside this same investment is a preventative programme. This is planned to significantly extend the lifespan of more than 300 highways, cycle lanes and footpaths. Work will be carried out in every ward of the city during the first year of the programme. The schedule is being organised so that work is done as efficiently as possible, while minimising inconvenience to motorists and residents.
A key part of the 5-year scheme is doing preventative work on roads at risk of deterioration, if untreated now. Taking early action will prevent the need for more costly major intervention in the future, saving both money and disruption. More than 300 roads will receive preventative treatment in the first year of the scheme. The first work has already begun on roads in Charlestown. Preventative work will involve applying surface treatments to the roads, helping to prevent water damage and restore tyre grip. This is expected to extend the road’s life by up to ten years. Major potholes will be fixed prior to the surface treatment being applied to the road. Roads and footways have been prioritised for treatment with the help of data from the

Manchester Academy students are cracking the code TNT News Manchester Academy students learnt the code-breaking secrets of the Second World War after they recently had a special visit. The students received a unique visit from one of the experts at the world famous Bletchley Park. The home of British code-breaking and a birthplace of modern information technology, Bletchley Park (near Milton Keynes) played a major role in World War Two. It produced secret intelligence which had a direct and profound influence on the outcome of the conflict. Bletchley Park’s Natasha Riley came into the Moss Lane East-based school. Riley visited the Academy to talk to students in Years 7, 8 and 9, and the school’s robotics club. She
spoke about the work carried out at Bletchley Park. More importantly, Riley spoke to them about the Enigma code breaking machine, which she brought with her. Enigma itself was a remarkable piece of engineering developed and used in the early to mid-20th century to protect commercial, diplomatic and military communications. During World War Two, Britain’s codebreakers, led by the brilliant mathematician Alan Turing, used it to decipher the military codes used by Germany and its allies. Manchester Academy’s Principal, Andy Griffin said “we’re very grateful to Natasha for coming into school to talk to our students. Those taking part certainly found it both fascinating and inspiring”.

Salford City College onboard this year’s Boatfest team All profits made will go back to the children of Irlam and Cadishead through primary schools or other community projects. Dave Hartley, one of the key organisers said, “Boatfest is primarily to raise money for young kids, to help promote their health and overall wellbeing, so to have other kids help out is ideal. “I also have to say it is fantastic how enthusiastic the staff and students at Salford City College have been. We’re doing all we can raising funds for primary age children but we feel it’s equally as important to give older students the best start to their careers”.

Andrew Reade, 44, of Toronto Street, Bolton was jailed at Bolton Crown Court for four years and four months. Reade pleaded guilty to preventing the burial of a body and perverting the course of justice at an earlier hearing. In January 2017, officers launched a murder investigation after 44-year-old Vicky Cherry had not been seen for more than a year. Her family had become concerned when they had uncharacteristically stopped hearing from her. Reade had told people that he and Vicky had split up and she had moved to Blackburn. However, enquiries revealed that her employment support allowance was still being withdrawn in the Bolton area. This was after the time that Reade claimed she had moved away. He was arrested on suspicion of her murder and, during a search of the house, officers sadly discovered Vicky’s body. Further enquiries established the body had been concealed in the house

Detective Sergeant Darren Wales, GMP’s City of Manchester team, said: “We have been made aware of, and received reports of, malicious communications since the beginning of this investigation. “I’m reminding people that they are legally bound to refrain from speculating on the identity of the boy who has been charged. “We need to put a stop to this so the legal process can continue without prejudice. “Everyone has a right to a fair trial.

Superdrug is selling the morning after pill over-the-counter at ‘half the price’ of rival brands. The decision by Superdrug to stock a generic emergency contraceptive has been welcomed by reproductive rights campaigners. However, it has been criticised by conservative groups who say the cut-price drug could put vulnerable young women “at risk”. Ezinelle, which contains the hormone levonorgestrel and prevents pregnancy by delaying the ovaries from releasing an egg, will be sold for £13.49. This is significantly less than the £25 to £30 chemists charge for pills sold under other names. Those too, contain the same active ingredient, such as Levonelle. “We are delighted Superdrug has taken this trailblazing step, and look forward to other major retailers following its lead,” said Ann Furedi, chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (Bpas). “We know the high cost of emergency contraception can be a major barrier to women accessing it when their regular method fails. Superdrug has illustrated that it’s perfectly possible to sell

British Number one Heather Watson has hit back at online trolls who criticised her for her weight and appearance. The critics also suggested that women should ‘feel more comfortable in their own skin’. The abuse comes as ‘Wimbledon fever’ hit the UK following the Aegon Championships across the country. The 25-year-old won the Wimbledon mixed doubles alongside Henri Kontinen last year. However, she received torrents of personal abuse on Twitter after bowing out in the opening round of the 2016 singles. She failed to finish off German Annika Beck with three match points. Following her defeat to Beck last year, Watson described checking Twitter as “selfpunishment”. Speaking to Radio Times before this year’s Wimbledon tournament, Watson hit back at her online critics. She scoffed at the notion that female tennis players should be expected to look ‘cute’. “We tennis girls are all fit and healthy but we’re on the court with no make-up,” she said. Sport isn’t about looking perfect. “We aren’t celebrities who have people on hand to do make-up all the time. Sometimes I wish I could look cute on court but we’re hustling and fighting for every point. That’s the job we have. It just shows that we’re strong and that sport isn’t just for boys. And sport definitely isn’t about looking perfect”. “I love wearing sports clothes, having my hair tied up in a bun, not wearing make-up. I do love putting on makeup but you don’t have to wear it every single day and you don’t have to change your body to look like pictures you see on the internet. I think more girls should feel comfortable in their own skin”. Watson also revealed that she trains for six hours a day but doesn’t adhere to a strict diet. She admitted she doesn’t shy away from ordering dessert if she’s still hungry. She does, however, try to steer clear of alcohol. “I have no rules, I love my food and I eat a lot,” she said. Elsewhere, Watson’s former coach Judy Murray suggested that female tennis players shouldn’t shy away from discussing other interests outside of their craft to better market themselves to potential fans.

All Eyez On Me’ chronicles the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, who defied all the odds to become a cultural icon whose influence continues long after his death. We follow his rise to superstardom as a rapper, actor and activist, who wanted to use his platform to try and change things in America. But a lot of people wanted to bring him down – not least the FBI, who had a 4,000-page file on him. From his early days to his death at the age of 25, Tupac’s life comes to the screen in ‘All Eyez On Me’, starring Demetrius Shipp Jr. Shipp Jr gives a very accomplished impersonation of Tupac Shakur in this long and solemn h a g i o g r a p h y, similar in its piety to the 2003 documentar y T u p a c : Resurrection. Mobb Deep’s Prodigy dies at 42
Manchester Indie: Sunday Playlist (6)
The rapper Prodigy, who made up one half of the group Mobb Deep, has died aged 42. The hip hop star – real name, Albert Johnson – was on tour in Las Vegas performing with the “Art of Rap” tour. He was performing alongside GhostfaceKillah, Onyx, KRS-One, and Ice-T, amongst others. Mobb Deep performed Saturday 17 June. Prodigy suffered from health issues throughout his life, however it wasn’t immediately clear what the cause of death was.
He had long suffered from sickle cell anaemia. The condition is most common in people of African descent. It is a severe hereditary form of anaemia in which a mutated form of haemoglobin distorts the red blood cells. It distorts the cells into a crescent shape at low oxygen levels. It leaves a shortage of healthy red blood cells in the body, leading to a painful blockage of blood flow. Prodigy’s publicist confirmed the news, citing “extreme sadness and disbelief”at that the death “of our dear friend Albert Johnson”.
Wochit News
“Prodigy was hospitalised a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anaemia crisis. “As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time”. Prodigy emerged onto the music scene with his partner, Havoc, in New York City in the 1990s. The duo formed Mobb Deep and participated in high profile feuds during their early years. They once had “beef” during the media-fueled East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry with Tupac and Biggie Smalls. Their influential music has been described by Rolling Stone as a “raw, vivid, and vicious distillation of East Coast gangsta rap”. They collaborated frequently with other artists, includingNas, who helped propel their visibility early in their career. Prodigy was generally regarded as the lyrical lead in the duo, while Havoc was better known for producing the beats. Nas was among those to pay tribute to Prodigy following the news of his death. Nas posted a photo of him reading on Instagram with the caption, “QB RIP King P. Prodigy 4 Ever”.

Love Island – what’s all the fuss about? TNT Entertainment Anybody who has access to a TV set or the internet will know what Love Island is. If not, they’ve probably been living under a rock for the last year. Love Island’s season 2 is in full swing, and has involved lots of laughs and romance, but also arguments and tears; exactly what the audience want. But how can an audience want to watch a bunch of highly-attractive singletons thrown onto a luxurious island together and ‘couple up’ every week. IS THAT A THING? The virtual world of social media has literally been taken over by the reality show. But the question is, why? As human beings, it is natural for us to take interest in other lives. But to the point where our lives begin to revolve around those we don’t even know? Of course, reality TV is entertaining and the contestants on the show will have had the experience of a life time. However, for
some, watching couples have the same arguments over and over again isn’t as entertaining as it may seem. The title ‘Love Island’ connotates respectful and meaningful relationships. Whilst in reality, contestants are made to re-couple up once a week and share a bed with their new partner. One couple are named as the overall winners of the series. Whilst to some watching the winning couple claim their cash prize and newly found fame doesn’t seem justified for them relaxing and arguing in a luxury villa for a month. Of course, with Love Island being one of the most watched shows on ITV, it is a massive success and doesn’t seem set to get axed just yet!

Business in brief
Africa’s digital renaissance
stevepb
TNT Business
TNT Business Having the world’s most youthful population and solid economic fundamentals, the continent is in the best possible position to benefit from the digital revolution. This will be achieved by leapfrogging outmoded models of industrialisation. How this will come about is best illustrated by the continent’s power challenge. Today, some 600m people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity. Even in major urban centres, businesses often have to contend with power interruptions and must maintain expensive and polluting fossil-fuel generators. Until recently, solving this problem would have taken decades and required massive investment in generation and grid connections. Today new technologies are bringing reliable and sustainable power within easy reach. The most promising solutions for Africa are microgrids powered by sunlight or wind. These systems have yet to make big headlines, but utilities and businesses are increasingly turning to them to provide power. Renewables-powered microgrids can help improve grid stability and offer a clean and efficient alternative to traditional generators. Renewables also often prove to be the most economical solution for new electrification projects.

The BBC has announced they are hiring more than 200 people to work on digital projects at their base in Salford. Staff will work across several departments including BBC Sport, Children’s, Education and live events. The new jobs will include roles for engineers, product and project managers and user experience designers. The drive in recruitment is part of BBC’s plan to reinvent itself for a new generation. This expansion in personnel will see the BBC become one of the largest tech employers in the north.
A European Union (EU) law to abolish roaming charges for people using mobile phones abroad has come into force. The new rules mean that citizens travelling within the EU will be able to use their mobile devices at the same price they pay at home. The European Commission said the end of roaming charges was one of the greatest successes of the EU. But a UK consumer group warned phone users could face “unexpected charges”. Until now connection charges have been added to the cost of calls, texts and internet browsing.
Monthly mortgages are usually cheaper than rent. However, many cannot get a mortgage in the first place. Lenders want proof you’ll be able to pay it back – and unfortunately, showing that you have successfully paid rent for years isn’t good enough. But more than 140,000 people have signed a petitionto change that, calling on lenders to take past performance as a tenant into account. Jamie Pogson, who set it up, said he has paid ‘£70,000+ in rent on time yet still struggle to get a mortgage’.
