50,000 rally against CUTS Last month around 50,000 people marched through Central London to show their opposition to failing austerity measures inflicted upon us by the government.
P
eople came from all corners of the nation to join the colourful and peaceful protest, timed to mark the anniversary of the formation of the People’s Assembly Against Austerity. Several major unions and individual campaigning groups joined forces, calling on the government to change their approach to tackling the financial crisis that continues to slowly choke the country. There were protestors from Unite, UNISON and NUT unions, as well as the PCS, with support also shown from the Green Party and Labour MPs.
The march took people from the BBC’s New Broadcasting house to Westminister, decked out with placards, whistles, music and plenty of spirit. At Westminister they heard speeches from Stockport activist and journalist Owen Jones, Green MP Caroline Lucas, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey as well as typically eloquent words from impish comedian and activist Russell Brand. Jones said: “Who is really responsible for the mess this country is in? Is it the Polish fruit pickers or the Nige-
rian nurses? Or is it the bankers who plunged it into economic disaster?” McCluskey said people had gathered to tell the political elite that inaction, while “everything we hold dear is taken away from us,” was not an option. “The welfare state being dismantled and misused and abused, the NHS being privatised, universal education being stripped away from our kids and the type of society that the Tories want to perpetrate is here before our very eyes.”

Russell Brand, who pledged his support for the campaign by describing austerity as a “toxic swindle,” spoke last. He said: “This is an issue which affects the 100 per cent because none of us can be happy as long as any of us are treated with discrimination, as long as any of us suffer from inequality. What’s important to me is the acknowledgement that power isn’t there [the House of Commons], it’s here.” Find more from the speakers online.

TNT readers! Let me take the time to thank you all so much for your continued support and kind wishes. One story that has touched us over the past month in particular is the story of the three Al Jazeera journalists sentenced to prison in Egypt. We would like to show our solidarity with Mohamed Fahmy, Peter Greste and Baher Mohamed, their families and Al Jazeera and our deep regret that in this day and age we are still finding our colleagues in the media community thrown in prison for the crime of reporting the news; for daring to question and challenge institutions of power when they abuse that power. We will resist and oppose crackdowns on the freedom of the press and the basic rights of expression and ability to question the lawmakers and politicians, for better or worse, because those are our treasured British values. We would like to inform our readership that human interest stories i.e. real community news is what TNT strive to highlight, so continue to keep us in the loop and invite us to cover your stories. We are currently researching for upcoming articles on elderly care in care homes, Category ‘A’ prisoners and their treatment and corporate and social responsibility (CSR). Send your stories our way: info@thenubiantimes.com As Carnival descends on us this month on 19-20 July, the community seems torn between Platt Fields Park and the other, rumoured, boycott carnival celebration due to take part on the same
day, as of yet, no confirmed location. According to a council source and a local radio station GMP have apparently pledged their unpaid support to the unofficial carnival. The Nubian Times will have a presence at both events. And let us not forget: Go Team England! The Commonwealth Games are happening this month in Glasgow so we wish all our athletes the best and we look forward to seeing all our Manchester hopefuls in particular. This month on Thursday the 10 July, TNT’s Speed Networking Forum will be held at Z-arts Centre, Hulme, Manchester, for all you budding business owners, entrepreneurs and community members. I
recently visited a local hair shop and was subjected to a barrage of abuse, bad manners, sub-level customer service and disdain from the staff in said shop. This distressing experience has happened to me and countless others I know, whilst shopping for Afro haircare products. The lack of product knowledge, apathetic attitude and undercurrent of hostility is an experience I’m sure many black women can relate too. After complaining under the Sales of Goods and Services Act 1982, my letter was ripped up in front of me and my concerns have yet to be addressed by the shop owners. I am angry, offended and disgusted. My question is: with our buying power, practical experience and countless entrepreneurial members within the community, why haven’t we (yet) come together collectively to establish our own specialist outlets where we can receive an authentic, familiar and friendly service?

MBE – Thanks but no thanks
The Queen’s birthday honours list has once again been published rewarding the efforts of individuals for their service to the British Empire, or so we are told. This year’s list will have at least one name missing; Charles Crichlow because Charles has turned down an MBE. Before we can understand this decision we need to understand the man and history; his, ours and that of the British Empire.
Charles grew up in Barbados, a tiny country in the south Caribbean. Barbados like the rest of West Indies has a history marred with slavery and the slave trade. It is essentially a collection of plantation villages that was evident to Charles from an early age. Although slavery officially ended a long time ago the plantation culture existed in the 1970’s; it was all around Charles. As a black man born and raised exclusively in England the closest I got to a plantation was watching LeVar Burton playing the role of Kunta Kinte in Roots (1977); yes that’s right that black fellow from Star Trek. For me the slave trade was something that people didn’t talk about, including my family, or something that school teachers at the time stumbled over awkwardly. Not for Charles it was all around him.
J. G. Ballard “The honours system is a… charade that helps to prop up the top-heavy monarchy”
As for the British Empire well it does not exist anymore, for many it ended with the transfer of Hong Kong to China in 1997. At its height the British Empire was responsible for the kidnap, rape, torture, forced labour and murder of millions of Africans who were taken from their homes and their homeland before being transported in appalling conditions to the Americas; including the West Indies. To my knowledge there has never been a public apology for this nor has there been any reparation for those affected by it. In short: “The British Empire is responsible for slavery that is the root of racism and oppression that followed it,” the last sentence are Charles’ words and not my own.
Benjamin Zephaniah “I get angry when I hear that word ‘empire’; it reminds me of slavery, it reminds of thousands of years of brutality, it reminds me of how my foremothers were raped and my forefathers brutalised… I am profoundly anti-empire”
Charles has been an advocate and supporter of the fight for reparations; in the same year that the Caribbean na-
tions made formal claims for reparations Charles feels that to accept an MBE would be disingenuous and hypocritical. He said: “To receive an MBE would be insulting to those who fight for reparations.”
L.S. Lowry The Mancunian artist holds the records for most amount of honours refused. He declined five titles including CBE, OBE and even a knighthood But there’s a flip side to this story. There will be many who say that this award was not for Charles but in recognition of all of the hard work and sacrifices of those involved in the Black Police Association; people like Karin Mulligan. To a point I would agree and here’s why: GMP celebrated 40 years in being this year producing a special edition publication of its
Brief magazine. Within it the contribution that black people have made to the force was limited to Sandra Douglas winning a bronze medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics for the women’s 4x400 relay. I know Sandra and I am in no way denigrating her achievement but this achievement has nothing to do with policing or the contribution black people have made to GMP. This is the point; our efforts are never recognised or memorialised and therefore we are destined to be forgotten within a generation like Atari or leg warmers. Charles does not want his rejection of the MBE to reflect on anyone who receives or accepts the award; nor does he want his personal decision to affect nominations of black staff in the future. For me Charles has done exactly what his heart has told him to do; I admire him for that.

Khat declared Class C drug Khat – the natural stimulant especially popular in our Yemeni, Somali and Ethiopian communities – has now become a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Possession or supply of the plant, which is chewed, often in social circles, will be a criminal offence. There had been concerns over the abuse of the drug and the social and medical impact on communities, however the criminalisation is unlikely to have any real bearing on the use of the recreational drug, apart making it a crime. Greater Manchester Police have announced their plans to support khat users put an end to their habits, with a six-month education period where local officers will work with communities to ensure the new law is both
communicated and understood effectively. DCI Anthony Heslop from GMP said:
“The education period will give us a chance to spend some time with the community and ensure that people are aware of the change in law and the police approach, as well as the support available to them.” The latest theatre of combat for the governments War on Drugs is another example of approaching health and social issues by using the police and the courts and it’s difficult to speculate how, and to what extent it will be enforced. In other words, are our already overcrowded prisons now going to be filled with pensioners from the Horn of Africa? Or are they just going to have to pay more to do it?

teamed up with GMP with a ‘Scratch & Sniff ’ card campaign to help tackle illegal cannabis farms. The cards will help people identify whether there are ‘grows’ in their neighbourhood in an effort to crack down on the internal supply of the UK’s most popular recreational drug; Manchester itself is the ‘breadbasket’ of the country’s cannabis industry.
In Jamaica, the government is planning to relax their cannabis legislation to make the possession of up to two ounces of marijuana legal for medical and religious purposes. There is also the feeling that with a failing economy, Jamaica – often portrayed as the ‘spiritual home’ of cannabis culture – could follow the lead of places like California, Colorado and Uruguay, and cash in on a thriving ‘narco-tourism’ industry.

Deeqo applies mascara to her feather-like lashes, “I don’t want to talk about politics.”
But politics is par for the course. There is a wave of unrest to close the borders to immigrants. But how does that involve Deeqo? Somali by birth but Swiss since she can remember. It’s just one of the many hurdles she faces each morning when she mounts her wheelchair up the long inclining ramps of Lausanne. Today she’s headed back to the hospital. She fell earlier this morning. There’s ev-
idence of it in her skinny jeans where a dark patch of rouge has cut a small hole through the knee of her pants leg. “It’s okay. Holes are in this year.” “I cried all night, a few times,” she says. She’s talking about the last time she was at the hospital. It was fast approaching midnight and no one would answer their phone. She really wanted to vent to someone about the indifferent and unsympathetic manner of the nurses; but there was no one to vent to. She’s defiantly upbeat. “Pain? What’s that?” she says. “That’s nothing. I have to be calm. No stress.” She says without hesitation that the fact she’s foreign seems to alienate people even more than her wheelchair.

The subject of Islamic banking in Britain raises important questions about an industry over which we have little direct control (despite, as taxpayers, being vested shareholders in banks like RBS and Lloyds) but yet which seems at times to flout and exploit the relationship between banker and customer.

Black pupils Statistics released by the Department for Education and Lord Nash show that around 58% of black pupils achieved five A*-C grades, marking a rise just shy of 10% since the start of the decade. Due to the social and economic factors that have traditionally impeded black students, particularly boys, the average level of achievement for black students was lower than the national average, but in the same 2010-14 period, the deficit was slashed from 5.8% to 2.5%. The figures suggest that while the national standard in maths and English has stagnated, black pupils continue to improve and the outlook is equally positive for the country’s 11 year-olds. According to the DfE report, several factors have contributed to the turnaround. They include the acceleration of the academies programme and the introduction of the English Baccalaureate, aimed at tailoring pupils subject choices to help them further their education, and the ‘pupil premium’, giving schools extra money to “improve the performance of their poorest pupils.” Those conclusions had however come into some criticism from people we spoke to, like Sam from Old Trafford who was “resisting attempts to politicise the good news.”

ISLAMIC BANKING
Islamic finance is governed by strict rules laid down in Sharia law, based on core Islamic beliefs. In Islam, money itself has no value, it is simply a token of exchange and so you are not permitted to profit from lending or receiving money. It’s a far cry from money hungry banks who would gamble your savings, charge you £25 for going a penny over your overdraft or cripple your family with interest and charges, swallowing their home in the process. Lloyds for example doesn’t charge Muslims for going over their overdraft. In a booklet sent out to customers, Lloyds said: “We are removing the Monthly Overdraft Management Fee of £6 from our Islamic Account, Islamic Student Account and Islamic Graduate Account.” This has brought Lloyds into some criticism from some sides accusing them of religious discrimination, but surely that’s missing the

BLACK It’s not so
Last month a row erupted between the Home Secretary Theressa May and Education Secretary Michael Gove on the issue of tackling extremism in Birmingham schools. It had been reported that a number of schools were subjected to an ‘islamist’ plot (or hoax depending on where you get your news from) to influence what was being taught. Arguments ensued between the Home Office and the Department for Education about whether a tough enough line was being taken on the matter of extremism

The upshot was that both Ministers were reprimanded by the Prime Minister David Cameron, and more interestingly both Mr Gove and Mr Cameron made public statements pronouncing that ‘British Values’ will be taught to every child in every school. When pressed on the issue Cameron defined British Values as freedom, tolerance, respect for rule of law, belief in personal and social responsibility and respect for British Institutions. Some may argue it is hypocritical to force children to respect in-

point? The point has to be that in a world where having a bank account is more important than having a passport (because you need one to have a house, to get a job, to pay your bills, to get a passport!), why are we continuously held to ransom by cutthroat companies – some of which at least part-owned by us – surely all bank accounts should be more in line with Islamic ones? Instead of making money by charging people, they generally make their money by investing or trading with a customer and sharing the profit, or indeed the loss, or agreeing a set price to be paid back in a set time. Though in Islamic financial practices it is forbidden for banks to invest in certain, ‘questionable’ business ventures like tobacco, drugs, alcohol and weapons and only invest in real assets, not those based on speculation. Let’s all get Islamic accounts!

stitutions i.e. the Criminal Justice System, when according to the Government’s own statistics on race, it discriminates against black people and particularly young black people, in terms of stop and search. How can black children be demanded to respect British institutions that were closely involved in the enslavement of their ancestors i.e. the Monarchy and Church of England? Is it not better that such respect is earned by those institutions demonstrating their relevance to the reality of life for black people in Britain?
Usain Bolt Sprinter
“I don’t think limits”
It seems extraordinary that any sign of disrespect for British Institutions by our younger generation could now be labeled as extreme and therefore a target for the Criminal Justice System. This raises a serious question about whether British Values as defined by the Prime Minister are likely in the long run to enrich our future generations or will this be yet another level of devaluing and at worst, criminalisation of our young people before they get properly started in life.

It used to be the cotton trading centre of the world. Now, the Royal Exchange Theatre in Central Manchester, stands as one of England’s mostloved theatres, not least because of its breathtaking grand design – with pillars large enough for the Colosseum, or its classical ceiling engravings sure to enthral even the most inattentive eye – but also for its rich history. Now, in its third century since opening – having been heavily damaged by explosions during World War II in 1940 and the IRA bomb in 1996 – it is a transformed, plush theatre, hosting some of the most poignant shows and glitzy names in British TV and theatre to date. The theatre was famously opened by the British actor Laurence Olivier with the production of The Rivals in 1976; eight years after cotton trading had stopped. Formerly known as The Sixty Nine Theatre Company, The Royal Exchange became the home of a group of London actors, directors & artists, who relocated to Manchester in search of a new home for theatre outside the capital. With the main theatre having 750 seats, a spherical structure and its stage in the middle, it provides a unique proximity between

Peyote is North American Plains Indian craftwork with an African history trail, like Egyptology, in its structure and patternation. For six weeks, Dr Ayo Ada Ogolo, an African and local herstorian and lecturer in Diasporic Research, will be facilitating a Peyote workshop in her art studio in the heart of Manchester’s city centre. Situated at the Brazennose House, overlooking Lincoln Square, the workshop provides the attendees with an intimately practical look at the process of African beading as a craft, its source and the how learning about its history helps us bridge the gap between people’s mistranslations of the art’s origins and its true narrative. All artwork has a process in its creation and Dr Ogolo is trying to help people understand the intricate art’s process and patterns. “Within the African culture, we’ve been given so many pieces of patterns and language, and we aren’t interpreting them the way we ought to be.”

Hi Andre! Congratulations on your new post. Tell us how it all began for you, what made you switch from football to basketball? To be honest I simply lost interest in football when I joined my school basketball team, I think a big part of that was just because it was so cold outside playing footy! I think loving what you’re doing is bigger than simply being good at it so whilst I was good at football my heart wasn’t fully in it. When did you realise you had talent? That was only last year when I moved to Myerscough. Before then basketball was still just a hobby but my coach and teammates at Myerscough really pushed and encouraged me to realise my potential, that’s when I began to think maybe this could really go somewhere. So before Myerscough were you ever tempted to just give up? Yeah loads of times! It’s hard to say no to staying out late with your friends, to decide to get an early night to go to training in the morning. Your friends are making money working, building careers at college and I’m throwing a ball for free just tiring myself out! That’s what it seemed like sometimes anyway. So what kept you going? I love it. I’d miss a session and feel bad the rest of the day. And to think that I could be showing my brothers and sister. [An-

dre is the oldest of five] the wrong way to go about life wasn’t a nice thought. That perseverance has brought you to this stage. How exactly did the Iowa opportunity come about? The internet is amazing! My coach at Myerscough made a mixtape of some of my shots and skills during games and put it on Youtube, it gained hundreds of views in days and one of those was from the coaches of Iowa who got in touch and here we are. What are you hoping to achieve when you get out there? I hope to be able to make a career and money off what I like doing. Very honest! How do you plan to do that? By making the most of my time there. I’m going to work hard to show them that the tape they saw wasn’t the best of me, there’s plenty more to come! Sounds like a plan. What would you say to other youngsters that are working towards an opportunity like this? Never give up. Never doubt yourself and always, always work hard. And finally, who will you miss most, your mum or your girlfriend? Haha how can I answer that? Erm... I’ll miss them both in different ways! Good answer! Thank you Andre and good luck, The Nubian Times salutes you!

From February to November 2012, Ayris exchanged 2,000 explicit messages though the teacher has escaped criminal charges and retains the support of the boy’s parents. Having lied about her relationship with the student when confronted by the headteacher, she later sent the boy a message saying: “Delete my phone number and all messages including Whatsapp – don’t ask why just do it – your mum will want to see your phone when you get home.” She was later questioned by police but was released without further action.

Ebola strikes
Greater Manchester Police have released CCTV footage of the moments leading up to a shooting in Salford where a man was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary for treatment on seven gunshot wounds.
W es t Afri ca Police The biggest outbreak of Ebola in history is continuing to spread across West Africa, with over 600 cases of the deadly virus across Senegal, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there was a need for “drastic action” and aid organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) called the epidemic “out of control” since it was first declared in south-eastern Guinea in March. At least 399 people have died from the haemorrhagic fever. “It’s very much a serious outbreak,” said Daniel Epstein, spokesperson for the WHO. “The emergence of this outbreak definitely threatens regional public health security. We’ve ramped up our response, insofar as we can, but we have to continue to improve our work to contain this outbreak.” Anja Wolz, MSF emergency coordinator, said: “There are a lot of cases – we are really stretched. My worry is that this is the tip of the iceberg. “Education and training are key to stopping this outbreak, so we are telling people what to look for and how they can prevent further spread. There are still a lot of people in the region who don’t believe that Ebola exists.”

I want to look into the eyes of my African and Caribbean children at school and tell them that they can be whatever they want to be and believe it.
The successes of Barack Obama, Mohammed Al Amoudi, and Oprah Winfrey prove that being black and coming from humble beginnings can mean that your fate is in your hands. Doesn’t it? Are ethnic minority children playing the same game with the same rules as their white British counterparts. Well kinda. A study by Lucinda Platt on migration and social mobility gives us a mixed picture. On one hand she suggests, people from ethnic minorities and working class backgrounds tend to perform better than white counter parts, however, ethnic minorities are at a higher risk of unemployment compared to whites from similar social classes, especially Caribbeans. The major theme from her study is how much of an impact social class plays on future success. Social mobility is only possible if the ruling class are willing to share their power, and they ain’t sharing! Mr Gove in his infinite wisdom is a big fan of private schools (which do not allow for much social mobility) and with his Tory buddies have closed initiatives like SureStart and plans to privatise child protection, which aid many struggling parents. This suggests social mobility is not a priority for him. Reforms on the education system do little to protect disadvantaged families from staying well, disadvantaged. ...continued at

Slim is in. It has been for quite some time now and it is shown by which specific members of the celebrity population garner more interest for their bodies, like Rihanna at the CFDA awards. The more-than-revealing outfit spoke volumes for her self-confidence and could have even boosted the confidence of her mass following, but it is still a kind of confidence that is very much taboo in the mainstream, and that has been obvious from the reaction. The event sparked various comments on the internet, a large number of which were centred on calling the singer a ‘slut’ and ‘attention-seeking whore’ and other such empowering statements; does this say more about society than the Bajan star? The controversy simply highlights the over-sexualisation of the female anatomy and the self-entitlement certain sections of the public seem to think they have over what individuals wear and what this says about their character. The power and impact of the human (particularly female) form is apparent in society and so it’s understandable, natural even, that many teenagers seek to harness this power for themselves. Surely this highlights how it is why the female body

Of course it works both ways with teenage boys, noticing other family members and friends becoming more muscular, it often leads to them dedicating time to the gym. Objectification of the male form is also beginning to take hold. Figures from 2012 suggested that the earlier predicted number of people taking steroids in the United Kingdom – 100,000 – (predominantly male) is doubling annually. Amongst those numbers are a number of teenage boys. When asked, two teenage boys said they’d prefer being muscular over “scrawny.”

has this power that needs to be addressed and shifted away from a possession of beauty, to which others falsely have a sense of entitlement to. In other words, it is the objectification of women that is causing problems for our young girls, not how a woman chooses to dress herself.
Body image is how someone views their own body but it’s often influenced by how others view them. This makes the double-standards held about the female and male bodies more prominent. A shirtless boy wandering around during the summer is a common occurrence, but a female wearing equally revealing clothes is usually seen as unsavoury. When a 15 year-old girl who attends a high school in Gorton was questioned on her outfit, she replied: “They’re just shorts. It’s not like I’m the only one wearing them.” Could this indifferent attitude be more universal? After all, it’s just human bodies, right?

With the World Cup coming to an end, I thought I would talk about Sports injuries this month and what can be done in order to reduce the risk of serious long term injury.
May and June is a good time of the year to consider strawberries and the ‘Chelsea chop’
Sports Injuries
As I have mentioned a number of times in previous articles, doing regular exercise and playing sport is good for your health and can help protect against some long-term, chronic conditions. However, things don’t always go to plan when exercising and accidents or injuries do happen. It is usually due to not warming up properly, using inadequate equipment, poor technique or overtraining. Pain, Swelling and limited body movement can occur in certain areas of the body such as muscles, ligaments (connects one bone to another bone), tendons (connects muscle to bone) and joints (such as elbows, ankles and knees).
Sprains and strains are the most common types of sports injuries and they happen when a ligament is pulled or stretched. Other common injuries that occur include:
Hamstring injuries – Tears to tendons or large muscles at the back of the thighs which causes the muscle to spasm and feel tender
Heel pain – Tissue under the sole of the foot becomes damaged causing sharp and severe pain when you place

weight on your heel. This is most common in runners and joggers
Inflamed joints – Inflammation of joints and tendons usually due to overuse i.e. tennis elbow caused by repetitive use of muscles in the lower arm Knee pain – Common in contact sports and activities that involve a lot of twisting. Ligaments can be damaged causing swelling and pain in the knee If you start to feel pain whilst exercising then you should take notice as this is a warning sign of injury. Slow down the rate of exercise and build it back up to tolerable levels, otherwise you may cause further damage. Minor injuries can be treated at home using the ‘PRICE’ therapy.
PROTECT – Use support to protect
the affected area
REST – Avoid exercise and reduce your daily physical activity ICE – Apply ice pack to affected area for 10-30 minutes. This helps to reduce any swelling (a bag of frozen veg will do the job) COMPRESSION – Use elastic compression bandages to reduce any swelling

Strawberries
ELEVATION – Keep the injured arm, leg, knee, elbow above the level of the heart to reduce swelling

Strawberries are one of this country’s favourite fruit, and undoubtedly one of mine too. I grow my strawberries in raised beds and netted them because understandably the birds love them as much as I do! You can place straws underneath the plants to keep them nice and clean. They can also be grown in containers on the patio, not only do they look nice but taste absolutely divine. I encourage my grandchildren to grow their own by giving them strawberry pots to look after and they enjoy picking and eating them. This is my trio of English strawberries to enjoy during the summer when they are cheap and at their best.

PRICE therapy can be used for a number of sports/exercise injuries, however if there is no improvement after 48 hours then further advice should be sought from a trained medical professional such as a doctor or physiotherapist. If you go into your local pharmacy then the pharmacy team will be able to help with over the counter medication such as paracetamol and ibuprofen to help relieve pain and reduce any inflammation. I may have put you off doing any exercise or playing sport ever again, but just remember the health benefits that it brings! Reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer, improving your mood and self confidence as well as helping you lose weight. So if you do injure yourself just remember PRICE therapy and you’ll be back training again before you know it.

Summer reboot? How about a life reboot?
Summer is here already and I bet you’re scanning the internet looking for quick fixes to get you summer ready in 2 weeks? Well I’m here to tell you there is no miracle quick fix diet or exercise plan that will have you losing 2 stone while improving muscle tone and strength. They are all lies. I want you to take this in as it’s an extremely important life lesson – you need to treat your body better every single day! Now I’m not going to leave you hanging I’m going to give you 5 tips that will improve your life fitness (and if you start right now you will start to see I provements within the month). 1. Stop
eating processed foods. Eat fresh
vegetables fruit and meats. Look at your plate or snack and if it is a single ingredient eat it! If not find something else. For example chicken breast with green peppers corn and basmati rice-all single ingredients = OK! Anything with additives or ingredients you cannot pronounce or has a number in = NOT OK! 2. Remove
sugar from your diet as much as possible. Energy drinks, sodas,
sugar-filled teas and coffees account to more sugar then you realise. Drink herbal teas instead if you don’t like plain water
3. Say no to cereal, start the day with proteins and good fats like salmon and avocado try steak and eggs or yogurt and nuts or a fry up (minus the white bread) banish the idea that breakfast has to be cereal it’s the most important meal of the day make it a feast 4. Plank at least 4 times a day every single day a strong core will improve your posture your back and make you look thinner 5. Do at least 3 hours of Cardio/weight training a week whether this is dancing or Insanity or boot camp or running whatever your preference MOVE YOUR BUTT Why would you do this? Why would you not? Yes it’s a life lesson but the bonus is you will not just see improvements this summer but every summer after that.

“Most of the songs I write about love are other people’s stories. When I hear ‘oh that guy is amazing, he gives me butterflies’, or ‘that guy turned out to be a douche bag’, I’m like ‘ok I’ll just make a note of that’. But most of my songs do draw from personal experience.”

As humanity tries to pick up the pieces in the wake of the carnage from Dark of the Moon, a group of powerful businessmen do their best to push the boundaries of technology beyond that which they can control; while an ancient, powerful menace sets Earth in his sights.
Plot ideas must be getting pretty thin on the ground by now so probably not for those seeking to emotionally engage One Love Festival Stockwell Farm, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, LU7 9PA with a film but the special effects will be more impressive/pointless and any film 15th August - 17th August The Mighty Diamonds, Cornell Campbell, Bushman, with Mark Wahlberg in it is worth the benefit of the doubt… probably. Film
The world’s worst two coppers are back. Forget Starsky and Hutch, the other guys from The Other Guys and Mike Lowry and Marcus from Bad Boys, Channing Tatum and Jonah Reid’s diabolical duo Greg Jenko and Morton Schmidt are the new benchmark in foolish cop-combos.

JUMP STREET
22 Jump Street is lazy, self-aware, unimaginative – a shameless sequel that adds nothing to the original storyline and is so diluted and half-baked a plot in itself, it’s almost insulting. It’s one massive joke – but you’re in on it. Like B Rabbit’s last freestyle in 8 Mile, it lays down all the sticks that critics and fans alike usually use to beat sequels and confronts them head on with brazen exposition and not a single toss given. The bromance between Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as Greg and Schmidt is what keeps this intentionally shambolic movie from falling apart and when their relationship inevitably begins to break down, the film itself goes tits up. The wheels have ful-
ly fallen off by the finale which, while still packed with gags and absurd action, is utterly devoid of substance. It’s not just Tatum and Hill though. In a film built on overlapping in-jokes, overkilled to the brink of extinction, the dynamic that develops between Ice Cube’s Captain Dickson and Schmidt, straight off the back of a wounding mother-son moment, will leave you buckled with laughter. It gets full marks for the hysterical heights it hits but while the self-conscious approach is a valiant effort to deliver a shameless, money-spinning sequel, the fabric that holds the brilliance of Tatum and Hill together is in parts thin, worn and coming loose at the seams.

NEWS
New York, Milan, Paris, London… okay, Salford might not necessarily be the next on that list for most people but it seems it could be their loss.
clothing L I N E
On 13 June, students from the University of Salford successfully curated a fashion show with a phenonemoal runway.
Flamboyant fabrics, outrageous outfits, move over Victoria Beckham and Carl Lagerfeld the next generation is starting to sprout along the banks of the Irwell. Final year students on the undergraduate degree in Fashion Design showed the city exactly why they have been awarded Best Digital Portfolio by teaming up with award winning creative agency Doll. Doll – previously affiliated with designer labels like Gucci at London Fashion week – worked closely with the students to push their own creative brand of fashion, glamour and attitude.
On a warm Friday evening at MediaCity, around 200 were ready to take in the showcase. This year’s production had built up a storm of interest, with designers and some up and coming models, all casted from the local community. Students and lecturers watched on from the sidelines as the models glided up and down the runway. The vivacious fur coats, laced embroidered jump suits and African printed fabrics did not disappoint with an impressive collection – menswear, womenswear, childrenswear you name it. The students will now begin work with House Of Frasier, Urban Outfitters, John Lewis, George and Marina Rinaldi, based in Italy.

DRASTIC Plastic
Matters
TnT
oney
On the face of it, last month’s Queen’s Speech announcement of a 5p charge on plastic bags at supermarkets and larger stores looks like an unpleasant yet necessary, government remedy.
The charge – to be introduced before the next election – is expected to cut the usage of plastic bags down from the 8 billion currently handed out each year to around 75 per cent to help protect the environment and marine wildlife. The proceeds will go to ‘charitable causes’, particularly those directly involved in repairing the environmental damage. In discussing the proposal last year, Ed Davey, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, argued: “The success of this charge will be that it doesn’t raise any money. We are very clear that none of this money will come to government; we are not trying to tax people, we are trying to encourage much more environmentally-friendly behaviour.”
But while the private cost and inconvenience might be bearable for most of us, the potential side-effects are likely to be far more challenging. These stem from the fact that many of us will switch away from paying the levy on plastic in favour of reusable ‘eco-friendly’ alternatives as Mr Davey envisages. US evidence from areas where plastic bag use has been prohibited indicates that the manner in which we typically use these alternatives can be a serious source of illness and even death. For a start, despite the official advice, many switchers will not use separate bags for meat and vegetables nor wash the bags before re-usage. As a result, health-threatening bacteria such as E. coli are typically prev-
“LEGALISED LOAN
S H ARKS ” The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which took over duties from the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in April 2013, said Wonga was guilty of “unfair and misleading debt collection practices” relating to as many as 45,000 incidents of threatening letters being sent to customers from debt collection agencies Wonga had made up; in order to “maximise” the process of recovering debt from its customers. Details of the letters have been passed to the police after the FCA stated it had ordered the troubled loan firm to pay more than £2.6m in compensation. Using the names Chainey D’Amato &
Shannon and Barker & Lowe Legal Recoveries, Wonga sent letters to customers in arrears over a two-year period starting in October 2008. To pose as a solicitor is a criminal offence and as such the letters never explicitly claimed to be from solicitors, however, as the names of the companies suggest, there was a strong inference that these letters represented the start of third party legal proceedings, in the exact form that would expect genuine communications from debt collectors to take. Wonga even charged customers “administration fees” to cover the costs usually expected when a third party becomes involved, despite the fact that these letters in

themselves were at best unethical. Wonga is the UK’s biggest payday loan company with standard APR interest in the thousands, leading to critiscisms from media and the public with one TNT reader who had previously been a customer labelling them “legalised loan sharks.” It also recently emerged that over 150,000 customers had overpaid their outstanding balances after “system errors” meant that they had been misled as to the extent of their debt, another issue which Wonga will have to pay out compensation for. Wonga has already had previous run-ins with the financial authorities on other occasions.
Greg Rutherford Athlete
“There are hundreds and thousands of volunteers behind the scenes who give up their time. Those are roles that nobody ever hears about”
Payday loan leader Wonga faces a potential criminal investigation after details emerged of “historic” malpractice whereby customers were sent fake legal letters in an attempt to “unfairly” pressure them into paying up.
GIFT has received a Young Roots grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to roll out a new project for South Central Manchester. Volunteers from the local community will deliver the project which will focus on the origins of the Afro-Caribbean community and to celebrate the impact of the Windrush generation in shaping the character and identity of the local area, in particular Moss Side and Hulme. Youngsters will be offered the opportu-
alent in around half of such carriers. And the consequences are material. San Francisco, which imposed an outright plastic bag ban in October 2007, subsequently saw a 25 per cent increase in accident and emergency admissions for bacterial infections, and a 50 per cent jump in food-related deaths. To put these figures into context, our own Food Standards Agency aims to reduce the annual 20,000 cases of hospital treatment for foodborne health illnesses, as well as the 500 deaths. The incipient levy on plastic bags looks set to make these objectives far more difficult to achieve.

OPPORTUNITIES M a t t h e winternship Y OUN G PR and Social Media Company: Rormix Location: Manchester Job Type: Temp Internship Salary/Wage: Not disclosed
On the final day of his TNT internship, we caught up with our latest intern Matthew Young – a 20 yearold student from the University of Huddersfield – to get his thoughts on his five week placement.
“A lot of my friends doing work experience just end up making coffees so it’s been great to be able to do the things I’ve done. Asked what he has taken from the experience, he replied: “I’m more confident in what I produce now. At uni you hand something in, you get your mark and that’s it. But here with the editorial team you get feedback and told that you’re doing well, but also at each stage get advice on the kind of things you should be looking at. “I feel now that if someone gives me a task, I can do it whatever it is. I’ve done a whole variety of work here, pretty much everything in terms of working as a writer for the paper and on the website.” Matthew featured on the TNT Drive Time show every Tuesday for the duration of his internship and despite a few nerves at first, settled into the show well. “I didn’t enjoy the radio, but now I like it.
Marketing and Communications Executive
I don’t have to listen to my own voice so I don’t mind!” We asked him whether he thought his placement at TNT would help him with his course at university. “I think it’ll help with my final year, and beyond. When I speak to my friends they’re all really jealous! I’ve got articles online and in the paper and how I’ve improved my time-management and researching skills.” We asked Matthew if he ever felt like we put too much on his plate. “It’s not like traditional work experience, you are involved in a big way and you feel valued. The first day when I came in I was a bit shocked with what I had to do but after 20 minutes I felt settled. If I ever had any problems there were so many people I could ask and there really is a great team here.” If you’re interested in getting involved at The Nubian Times like Matthew then contact us via email: info@thenubiantimes.com

Manchester clubs make signings
The Manchester clubs were busy in the transfer market in June with Manchester United in particular expecting more to follow.
The Red Devils officially unveiled star midfielder Ander Herrera after he signed from Basque club Athletic Bilbao in a deal thought to be around £28m. The agile, creative midfielder will give United a fresh dimension in midfield and is seen in Spain as the logical successor to Andres Iniesta. Herrera has been a long-term target for the club but sacked manager David Moyes pulled the plug on the deal last minute in what was a farcical chapter in United’s transfer history. 18 year-old left back Luke Shaw also signed in a whirlwind 24 hours for the club. He demanded
a fee of £27m from former club Southampton, making him one of the most of the world’s most expensive teenagers and defenders but good value when you consider he’s a player widely expected to be the United and England left back for the next 10-15 years. The fee is also offset by the £4.4m received for Alex Buttner who has joined Dynamo Moscow. On the Blue side of the city, Bacary Sagna has made the switch from the Emirates to the Etihad having signed from Arsenal on a free. Widely regarded as one of the league’s top right-backs, the French World Cup star has signed a three year £150,000 a week deal. His main rival for top right-back is new teammate Pablo Zabaleta and it will be interesting to see how Manuel Pellegrini will put the pair to use. Sagna joins ex-Gunners Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri at the club. In a more low-key signing, the Sky Blues have signed powerful Porto midfielder Fernando for £12m with Yaya Touré’s future still seemingly in the balance.
Sayonara Serena
Top seed and five times Wimbledon champion Serena Williams crashed out of the iconic tournament in only the third round.
Young, French rival Alizé Cornet, seeded 25th, beat the American powerhouse for the second time this year despite never having previously beaten an opponent in the top 20 at a grand slam event. Despite dominating the first set, Williams let it all slip losing two straight sets in her quickest SW19 elimination in nine years. Williams said: “Sometimes it happens, you work hard and maybe it’s not for today, maybe it’s for tomorrow. I just gotta keep going.” The victorious Cornet expressed her own joy and disbelief, saying: “I cannot believe it, a few years ago I couldn’t play on grass but now I have beaten the world number one.”
Barcelona will sign Luis Suarez but Liverpool want Alexis Sanchez as part of the deal Sanchez however may have other ideas as he favours a move to rivals United and City Memphis Depay is highly sought after with both United, City and Spurs monitoring the young World Cup star Atletico Madrid will move for Michu, if a bid for City striker Alvaro Negredo fails, to replace Chelsea-bound Diego Costa Louis Van Gaal continues to work on his United project between training sessions with the Dutch national side as he sanctions a £44m move for Arturo Vidal and an £11m bid for Vermaelen who he wants lead a three-man defence. Stefan de Vrij and long-term target Mats Hummels are also on that list A number of clubs are interested in Edin Dzeko but Manuel Pellegrini sees a future for him at the club Liverpool have joined Arsenal in the hunt for ex-City striker Mario Balotelli City are still hopeful of signing Roma’s Mehdi Benatia Newcastle’s Matthieu Debuchy will move to Arsenal, paving the way for Micah Richards to sign for the Magpies T h e

TNT Coverage of the final rounds of the World CUp, wimbledon & the commonwealth games
EnGland limp out England’s World Cup campaign will inevitably be seen as a failure but Roy Hodgson always made it clear that this was a long-term project and that success was never on the cards at this tournament.
England has never really had a recognisable or aspirational style and that has been made clear by the performances and spirit of other teams in the competition. So when players who are used to crisp passing and lethal counter-attacking play in the Premier League come to play for England and start hoofing it, England revert to type; unfortunately nobody really knows what that type is and we’re left with limp, uncreative performances. We have to see this as the end of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in international competition, take a step back, look at what kind of player we are producing and develop a style and philosophy around that. We can’t continue to try and squeeze our players into tired and traditional roles that just aren’t suited to our better players.

KELLY
MASSEY
With the Commonwealth Games taking place in Glasgow this month, TNT caught up with English 400m hopeful Kelly Massey to hear her thoughts on the competition which captured Manchester’s imagination way back in 2002. On the Commonwealth Games she said: “Some people don’t see it as a big event because not all countries take part but it’s second to the Olympics in terms of the fact that it’s all sports, not just athletics.” Old rivalries die hard and English athletes could potentially get a frosty reception from Scottish supporters. “It’s a ‘close to home’ Games. I don’t know if we’ll be booed or cheered by the Scottish fans. We hope they’ll support us! Being close to home, we’ll have more travelling support as well.” As Kelly continues her preparation, there is no doubt in her mind as to her approach in the heats themselves. “You have to run your own race. If you try to chase or go too fast or too slow over the first one or two hundred, that’s when you’ve messed up. It’s vital to execute your game plan.” Her personal best is 52.29” at 400m but she’s adamant she can push herself further. “I know I’ve definitely got a 51” in me, but circumstances have at times gone against me. Little things can come into play. I’m hoping for the right conditions and I know I can do it.” She’s confident that Team England can do us proud. “We’ve got a good chance of more medals than Delhi for sure, the team is a lot closer and we have older, experienced performers and also some who haven’t even got PB [personal best] yet; they’ll be excited and eager so there’s a good mix.” We wish Kelly Massey and all our hopefuls the best of luck and look forward to seeing plenty of medals on their back south of the border.
