REPORT

Dear Oak Hill School Community,

I write this letter as chairman of the Oak Hill School Board of Trustees for the 2021-2022 school year with immense gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside our Board, Hart and the incredibly talented and committed faculty and staff. On a personal level, this is our last year at Oak Hill School as parents once our youngest son, James, graduates in May 2023. I cannot overstate what this school has meant to our family–it has been an incredible 13 years of learning, spiritual formation and leadership development for each of our three children. We have so many lasting memories of teachers, coaches, Round Ups, Flag Raising and so many special moments that we will cherish. Without question, Oak Hill uniquely shaped each of our children and helped build their character, empathy and connection with others.

As your Board chairman, I am really proud of what our school has accomplished since I joined the Board in July of 2017. However, I am even more excited about the direction and potential of Oak Hill. Over the last several years, the Board has worked closely with Hart, the administration and faculty and our parent community to emerge from the pandemic stronger than ever as a school. We were also able to complete our long-term strategic plan, which I believe will be the foundation for years of continued growth and positive momentum for Oak Hill and our community.

Your commitment and belief in our school was evident in your incredible generosity and support of Oak Hill. We received over 700 gifts from parents, grandparents, past-parents, alumni and other friends of the school totaling $1.2 million toward the Oak Fund last year. Your gifts enrich the Oak Hill experience by providing ongoing support for our student programs, enhancements to our facilities, endowment support, financial assistance for families in our community and professional development for our teachers. We are so grateful and humbled by your confidence and support of our mission.

Beyond charitable giving, I also want to recognize the outstanding volunteer work of our Parents Association led by Kacee and Joe Pat McGuigan. Our PA and other parent volunteers are critical to so many important initiatives and are great examples of our culture of inclusion and community. Our family will always be grateful to Oak Hill. It has been a distinct honor to serve as chairman of the Board, and I am so excited and optimistic about the future of the school and its role in our Nashville community.

DEAR OAK HILL SCHOOL COMMUNITY,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to share our annual report of giving for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. It is because of the generosity of this community that we had another record-setting year for the Oak Fund. Your gifts ensure the strength of our joyful foundation, providing the excellent educational experience for our students’ growth and development.

When I think about the many ways our community members give, I want to acknowledge the time that our Parents Association dedicates to the betterment of the school – from planning Round Up to Spring Fling, to running our school spirit store, The Panther Den, and countless events in between. We appreciate the many ways you, our volunteers, support OHS.

We are also excited to include examples of how your generosity has made a direct impact on campus. There are too many stories to include them all, so we’ve just highlighted a few. I hope you see the joy “+” in the experiences your donations have facilitated.

I also want to take a moment to update you on the annual report moving forward. We are constantly seeking ways to be the best stewards of our resources and thus, we have decided to suspend printed copies of a stand-alone annual report after this year. While we currently only print a very small number of annual reports, we will be moving away from printed copies entirely after this edition. This will save us upwards of $25,000 in printing and mailing costs. This money will be reallocated to directly impact students on campus. We will continue to publish annual reports online, so please ensure your records, specifically your email addresses, are accurate in the system. Creating a foundation rooted in faith is a hallmark of an Oak Hill education. As students develop their faith, growing in grace, they view themselves as God’s children guided by lessons from Bible classes, Chapel, Flag Raising and more.

The Oak Hill community is a place where each child is deeply cared for and loved. To do anything well, we must do it with our hearts, our minds, and our strength for the love of God, ourselves, and our neighbors. It is in this spirit of community that our students joyfully discover their place in the world and the importance of their interconnectedness to others.

Your gift to the Oak Fund will enhance our ability to build an environment that inspires students to achieve academic excellence, deepen their faith, develop social responsibility, and fully embrace life and all of its opportunities.

PROFESSIONAL Development

Just as our mission aims to build children who are lifelong learners, we expect the same of our faculty and staff. We are proud to report that 100% of our faculty and staff participated in professional development throughout the course of the 2021-2022 school year. Experiences ranged from CPR certification to Responsive Classroom training, enabling all teachers to have a “student-centered, social and emotional learning approach to teaching and discipline.”

Donations to the Oak Fund last year enabled our teachers to pursue professional development across the country.

Lower School art teacher, Ann Oliver attended a Responsive Classroom conference. After the conference, Oliver restructured the beginning of her class. “The students sit together for the introduction of the lesson, instead of our tables; we have an opening message to let the students know what we are doing in art class. I have found this to be a very warm and welcoming way to start the class as a group and create an even stronger sense of community in the classroom.” Kindergarten teacher, Coneale Bethurum attended a reading institute through the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University and has been able to incorporate new techniques based on the science of reading research into her reading instruction.

Our unparalleled commitment to professional development and to our teachers helps us attract and maintain a strong faculty and staff, eager to invest in themselves, not to mention it helps us provide the best educational experience for our students.

OHSBus

As Nashville has grown, so too has the traffic. Getting around town has become time-consuming and difficult. With the purchase of three buses in 2017 and the addition of bus routes, Oak Hill has been able to accommodate families who are navigating the challenges of drop offs and getting to work. The school is proud to provide a safe and reliable alternative mode of transportation in the mornings and afternoons. An added benefit of buses is greater flexibility in planning athletic events and field trips, reducing the need for charter buses in most instances. More than 100 bus riders from all grade levels interact daily on their bus routes. Any time the buses are on the road, they are essentially serving as a rolling billboard for OHS, and the buses are even used to deliver our Thanksgiving bags for FiftyForward.

With the continued growth of the area as well as Oak Hill School, there was demand for another bus.

Where does my donation go?

While exact percentages may vary from year to year, the largest bucket for the Oak Fund is emerging priorities. Roughly 42% of the Oak Fund supports emerging priorities which include, but are not limited to professional development, campus security, technological enhancements, campus upgrades, a new bus and the like. The robust professional development budget allows us to attract and retain the best teachers and continue to invest in them. Heightened security on campus allows for learning to take center stage. Technological enhancements help everyone work together more efficiently. A new bus will grant greater flexibility for busy parents. The vast amount of the Oak Fund goes to support these emerging priorities and allows us to be responsive to the needs of our community as they arise.

Roughly 25% goes toward financial aid, helping make OHS affordable for families and strengthening our community.

The final 33% goes toward the endowment, ensuring the long-term health of the school. No portion of the Oak Fund bridges the gap between tuition and the cost of educating a student since there is no difference between the two. Additionally, no portion goes toward debt, as OHS is debt free.

The Oak Hill School Parents Association had a fantastic year. Hundreds of parents spent time putting together the many community building events, traditions, and fundraisers that are vital for our school.
